Got a concept for Eliksni reproductive biology that's been rattling around in my brain recently, so I had to draw it. Alien fuckers and specbio nerds come get y'all juice
Notes and explaination under cut:
Synopsis: Eliknsi have a bi-phase reproductive system that allows not only for a more even split of resources between sexes, but also for reproduction to go on hiatus between the sperm-depositing stage and the egg-depositing stage, which allows Eliksni to wait out harsh conditions before developing their eggs (though once the eggs are deposited into the broodpouch, development can only be slowed for so long before the critical laying period comes). Sperm can also be stored in the sperm storage tubules for a long duration of time, which allows for reproduction to occur in the absence of favorable mates as well as mixed-sired clutches. Seminal fluid (male) and lubricating fluid (female) also have differential functions and are laced with hormonal cues that jumpstart the process in a partner.
Reproductive process: Physically male Eliksni mate with a receptive female, depositing as much sperm as possible in the vaginal tract, where it then gels into a sticky consistency against the ducts to the sperm storage tubules. Physical stimulation and hormones in the seminal fluid initiate ovulation. The female then mates with as many physically male Eliksni as possible (or the same mate multiple times, as monogamy became socially common during the Golden Age of Riis despite Eliksni being a naturally polygamous species) before accumulating enough ovum in the uterus for fertilization to occur, when the accumulated sperm in the storage tubules is then transferred through a duct into the uterus for fertilization. Once the eggs have been fertilized, they can either be placed in developmental hiatus, or oviposited into a receptive broodpouch, where the nutrient-rich lubricating fluid secreted by the ovipositor both introduces a hormone that tightens the broodpouch sphincter, and assists in further development of the eggs.
Once the eggs have been oviposited, development continues, with the eggs absorbing water and nutrient-rich material through diffusive exchange in blood-rich vessels near the surface of their pourous membrane, gathering nutrients and oxygen from the blood-filled lining of the broodpouch and the sticky binding fluid left by the female parent. Building a suitable yolk sac takes priority over feeding the embryo, but development of the zygote into an embryo continues; this process can be slowed with adequate stress, but cannot be halted. Once the yolk sac is as developed as possible, calcification of the shells begins to occur, and a week or so after that, the eggs are laid. After laying, the embryos develop rapidly, and hatch not long after.
When breeding can be put on hiatus: after deposition of sperm, after fertilization of eggs
When breeding can be slowed: after deposition of eggs
-> This means that it is possible for an Eliksni to go months to years between mating cycles, yet still produce viable offspring. Needless to say, this is a major factor to why their species are so persistent in the face of adversary
a.) Hemipenis: Used for depositing sperm. Residual barbs on each hemipene are used to scrape away the sperm of rival mates, as well as help lock into the vaginal canal for ensured deposition of sperm.
b.) Testicles and Seminal Vessel: Used for producing and accumulating sperm. The long shelf life of Eliksni sperm relative to mammalian sperm allows for seminal fluid to accumulate in the seminal vessel between matings, giving Eliksni that do not mate as frequently (ie, lower-ranking) a reproductive advantage over those who do (ie, higher-ranking) if the opportunity arises, as they are capable of releasing more sperm at once.
c.) Broodpouch + Broodpouch Sphincter: Where fertilized eggs are oviposited, the broodpouch is essentially a muscular sack that is heavily lined with blood vessels to maximize the surface area for cross-current exchange to occur with the eggs. The broodpouch sphincter becomes relaxed during the breeding period, but tightens after eggs are oviposited and remains tight until laying needs to occur. If a dominant female is replaced, the pheromones from the replacement female cycling + stimulation can elicit relaxation again for forced expulsion of eggs (typically done to get rid of a rival's clutch).
.
d.) Ovipositer: Modified hemipene, used for depositing fertilized eggs into broodpouch.
e.) Vestigial Hemipene (clitoral-analagous): Modified hemipene, remains in sheath. Stimulation of the vestigial hemipene through vaginal canal aids in eliciting ovulation.
f.) Ovaries: They're ovaries. They've got oocytes.
g.) Uterus: Where fertilized and unfertilized eggs are stored until they can be oviposited.
h.) Vagina + Sperm Storage Tubules: Where seminal fluid is deposited, and sperm is stored for fertilization. Constriction of muscles from orgasm move sperm through duct to uterus; partners can subliminally influence a female to preferentially utilize their sperm in this manner
*Despite the apparent complexity of the Eliksni reproductive system, hormonal fluxes are capable of morphing sex over time. This is a long, slow process, but was favorable in the past, as only older high-ranking Eliksni were historically allowed to mate. Being flexible in reproductive ability allowed for individuals to increase fitness by maximizing reproductive odds when rising up the ranks.
**Historical (pre-Traveler) Eliksni reproduction involved a higher-ranking, typically much older individual (Kell) being free to mate with whomever they wished, while mate options became increasingly limited as one moved down the hierarchy; low-ranking (overwhelmingly young) Eliksni were pretty much incapable of mating. Many of the adaptations listed here were selected for to match this system, though Eliksni partnerships became increasingly less rank-dependent in their Golden Age. Post-Whirlwind saw a reversion in rank-based mating systems as well as a trend towards short-term monogamous partnerships.

I think one of my favourite things is when people make fankids but actually explore the biology behind these fankids existing and have their own speculative/xenobiology hcs and facts behind them like;
Yes. Explain to me how these two characters of the same gender can have baby together through complicated charts and drawings of reproductive organs
(have to give an honorary shout-out to @catboymoments, they are really good at the whole speculative biology schtick, go check them out)

Remember you asked for this. Here's the fairy sex ed post
Partially cross posting from twitter but without nearly as much of a character limit, if you recognize it no you don't <3
Vaguely nsft under the cut; this is intended to be a psuedoscientific exploration of speculative biology and fairy reproduction, please don't reply to this post with highly sexual commentary (jokes are fine lmao) because this is primarily a family friendly blog.
Prefix:
Starting this off by saying that, while this post is going to focus on reproduction via their physical forms, fairies are essentially made of magic and can, for the most part, manipulate those forms at will. Think of these like the default settings of physical manifestation. Also it's worth noting that while I'm for the most part using human biology terms, fairies themselves probably have ridiculously whimsical names for all these organs that have existed for billions of years, but this isn't a language post. This is not meant to be a full comprehensive medical guide to the complexities of gender in fairy culture, nor will it cover every possible variation of default physical forms. This is your middle school "where do babies come from" level of documentation. The terms "male" and "female" are used to describe fairies as they are "assigned" at birth, however, please don't take this to mean trans and nonbinary fairies don't exist, they definitely do.
Anatomy:
When manifesting physical forms, fairies develop traits based on the dominant species of the world they will primarily engage with, in this case, humans. (1) This leads to the development of secondary sex characteristics such as breast tissue and facial hair. While these traits have evolved over millennia spent alongside humans, they are still derived from magic, and can not be used to qualify fairies as mammals. Fairies are an oviviparous species, meaning an embryo will develop within a fertilized egg and depend on that egg for nutrients, but will hatch inside the parent's body and result in a live birth. (2)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Females produce eggs and lay them via an ovipositor. Males produce sperm via internal testes used to fertilize eggs as they pass through the birth canal towards the brood pouch via penetration by ovipositor. The birth canal and ovipositor are both is self lubricating when aroused to assist the transfer of eggs, and the internal pelvic muscular structure in male fairies is designed to pull the eggs as deep as possible to increase chances of fertilization within the brood pouch. The urinary and reproductive systems are completely separate because they keep canonically arguing about leaving the toilet seat up and while I'm only loosely respectful of canon I can also do whatever I want forever. The female urethra exists behind the ovipositor while the male urethra is connected to a non-reproductively functional penis. Ovipositors tend to be slightly larger than penises, and female fairies tend to be slightly larger than males in general, but this is primarily dependent on the individuals Both the ovipositor and penis have an abundance of nerve endings and experience arousal, though male ejaculation is entirely internal. The brood pouch is functionally a uterus in human terms, however, as the developing embryo derives nutrients from the egg and has no need to fully attach, the brood pouch does not have a lining and, sorry everyone, men don't get periods, nobody has to get periods in my world because I'm a benevolent god. Fairies experience 3 types of puberty, "pooferty(3)" "pasta puberty(4)" and sexual maturation. The first two of these involve developmental milestones and magic-hormone interactions, so they are best set to the wayside for a different post, though I will note here that most secondary sex characteristics will develop in manifest forms at the end stages of pasta puberty. The sexual maturation stage of puberty is the only stage in which hormone production is more of an active cause than magic. Females may begin laying eggs during this time, and nocturnal depositing is very common in teenagers and nothing to be ashamed of, it's a very normal experience to wake up to the occasional egg or two. At the end of class you'll receive a pamphlet with a section on proper disposal spells. Males may experience abdominal cramping during third puberty, as their brood pouch swells slightly to accommodate possible eggs, this is not cyclical in the way human periods are, and once they've had their last growth spurt and the pouch settles in its more spacious form, any residual cramping should subside. Until then, the pamphlets offered at the end of class will also have a section on magical pain relief.
Reproduction:
A female fairy can lay between 1-5 eggs, which are semi-gelatinous in texture and range from .5"-1" (1.27-2.54cm) in size. Egg coloration comes in a myriad of pastels, but despite some outdated theories, the coloration of the egg indicates nothing about the potential appearance of the baby. As previously stated, when the female lays her egg/s inside the male they are fertilized internally. The male will carry the fertilized egg/s in his brood pouch, but the embryo will remain inside the egg through development, using it as a source of magical nutrients If an egg laid inside a partner in whatever orifice is not successfully fertilized, it dissolves within a matter of 6-12 hours. Birth control looks a lot different for fairies because it's essentially exclusive to a morning after spell to forcibly dissolve the eggs anyway. After a 3 month gestation period, the embryo will have fully absorbed the nutrients from the egg and will essentially have "eaten" it's way out, which will trigger the father going into labor and, theoretically, delivering the baby via birth canal. In practice however, magical c-sections(5) were the go-to long before the baby ban. Seriously this has been the preferred method for millennia. Only holier-than-tho crunchy granola weirdos get superior about non-magically assisted delivery.

In s3ep12 Abracatastrophy we learn that fairies take on godparenting duties and physical traits of the earths dominant species.

s9ep38 School of Crock Peri goes through pooferty, but this is also one of those concepts I've entirely restructured in my mind.
ANW s1ep18 Growing Pains introduces pasta puberty, and I'm keeping that canon on the grounds that it's funny.
In s6ep1 Fairly Odd Baby we gain a basic and superficial overview of fairy gestation. It's the mpreg episode.

Mpreg being treated as a joke
Why do people treat mpreg like a joke? Especially non-gay mpreg. At least to some extent, I've seen people being in earnest abt mpreg in stuff like yaoi and mlm pairings, but outside that, it's always usually made fun of. I get that it's the element of "unexpected, unfamiliar territory, he got pregnant instead of her!" and stuff like that, but what bothers me is when they are treated like a freak of nature. This is specifically in response to all those mpreg jokes with hetero couples "nah, HE birthed the kids instead" and that one meme template
Tumblr media
"Like haha, funni, otherwise it will never happen in canon tho."
Like, you do know trans male pregnancy is a thing, right? Not to mention seahorses.
When I laugh at those memes, too, it's because it's unexpected, but I also genuinely find it wholesome. It could be t4t, or that's just how it simply works in their universe. People can have world-building for vampires and stuff but this is where they draw the line, ig
And no, I do not have this pressing urge either to clarify each time that "haha, it's only a joke tho, I promise, cuz the female partner is still the one who will get pregnant!"
Why can't I find these memes purely wholesome? Even more, why cant i express the desire to see it in canon, and yea that's where i immediately get grilled by others. "Gross, that'll never happen! It's only a joke! You must have a fetish!" No? I'm one of those who barely has any fetishes in general. I would go as far as to say it's still valid sentiment, even if it is someone's fetish. People forget that fpreg is also a very popular fetish, but it's not demonised because it's the "status quo" or "normal".
Why can't mpreg be normalised? I am genuinely interested in seeing mpreg plot points or arcs of my favourite characters sometimes, or how their female partners deal with it, in ways that isn't just comedy. Why must this just be for female characters? There are so many additional things you could explore with this. T4T relationships, alpha woman x omega man, seahorse AU (swapped) or simply a situation where mpreg happened through magic or science
If you think you're being progressive by making alotta mpreg memes and stuff like "oh i need to get this man pregnant!" But then scrunch up your nose when it's actually canon and/or you come across fanfics on it, then newsflash, folks, you are in fact, not being progressive

So true, OPs. Back then, I wasn't even that exposed to fanfiction culture and wrote het mpreg scenarios in my diary as a preteen. Maybe people seem to forget, but early 2000s cartoons were chock full of hetero mpreg, from the Fairly Odd Parent, Jimmy Neutron, heck, even Ben 10, and Men in Black the animated series.
As much as i had fun consuming yaoi mpreg and later a/b/o, I missed that like the original charm of mpreg when it was unexpected and moreso in a hetero pairing. Because at the time, to me, it wasn't just me wanting to see how my blorbo would react to being pregnant, I also wanted to see how my female blorbo would react to being suddenly put in a situation where they have to deal with a pregnant partner, especially one who wasn't supposed to be pregnant, and come to terms with only being on the standby and not close in the same way as a new father and his newborn would be but still making peace with it and finding domestic joys in new ways urghfgbgfgj
Yo heterosexual mpreg is so underrepresented and underappreciated. Whether the man is trans or cis gender.
I can drink to THAT 馃
my first forrays ever into mpreg were with my het ships LOL I was maybe a little confused and behind on the politics of LGBT+ stuff, hell, didn't even really know what yaoi or yuri were then. So it holds an endearing place in my heart that said "idgaf about gender actually"

THE SEAHORSE AU?
Folks, we all know about alpha woman/omega man stuff, but I don't see enough people trying their hands at smth like a seahorse AU in general. What it is, you may ask?
Well, men are the ones with gestational pouch, sperm glands and pouch openings/slits. Women have the ovipositors that pop out during sexy times but otherwise remain sheathed internally. And tbh, it depends on the world building, whether you want them to be able to lay a larger more formed egg inside someone or just cum/release tiny ones since, yknow, a human ovum is typically tiny. Also, there could be lotta slick/fluids/wetness from both parties
People, where are more stuff like this??

I feel like people don't talk enough about the aftermath of being spoiled. I think there's no greater mental agony in this world than this. Like wdym "so and so dies??" What?? Or some cool plot point you wished you could have first experienced yourself. Then you go through all five stages of grief.
Intensely. It makes me want to roll on the ground in intense pain. Makes me want to beg some higher being to turn back time. Or for Men in Black to erase those memories. But alas, I'm now forever stuck with that knowledge.
Also, similarly to when I finish a glorious piece of media. Like please, please, pleaseee, somebody wipe my memory of it so I can watch it for the first time again

Omg, the reason why I'm still hesitant to write these kinds of tags is precisely why. Usually, I know people come on ao3 with the knowledge of spoilers, but what if someone doesn't?
I just try to write it generally like "no beta we die like my hopes and dreams"
Tumblr media
the fact that I鈥檝e actually had this happen multiple times when I鈥檝e entered a new fandom is hilarious like what do you MEAN

Hi there! You can call me Ace. I'm a fanfic writer
Basically, the same intro as my other one
馃惛 I'm a genderqueer (fuck gender kinda basically) person, any pronouns, have an unlabeled identity and sexuality for now, but I do know I'm a boy kisser, especially the genderqueer ones. I'm also on aroace spectrum.
馃専 I'm in multiple fandoms, and I love ambiguous shipping (platonic, alterous romantic), found family tropes, teacher-student things, hurt/comfort, angst, the right amount of fluff, romantic subplots, and some delicious intense chemistry between two characters. Doomed siblings/parents also hurt juuust the right amount
馃専 Not much of a shipper, but if I do, I'm crazy about gender role reversal/GNC/genderqueer/girlboss x malewife hetero ships ranging from pretty simple ones to extreme ones. Also, the biggest advocate for Alpha woman/Omega man ships
鈥硷笍 Just so yall know, I also regularly write both smut and mpreg, so this is definitely an 18+ blog, just a heads up. Mpreg, especially hetero pairing mpreg, is very near and dear to me, and personally, it is not a fetish (except impregnation kink) to me. Mpreg to me is largely sfw (unless smut), and I adore well written, nuanced stories around it. I'm also an action nutcrack, so I love putting them in intense, dramatic situations cuz I want to see how my blorbo will cope in addition to their own pregnancy.
馃挃 Lastly, I've been recovering from chronic depression and undiagnosed mental issues, so this blog serves to nudge me out of my bubble slowly and ease me back into shape so I hope ya'll go easy on me
