the top left is him pre-Jason + Batfamily. he grew up around Crime Alley with his stepsister (who is VERY much not a good guardian. there’s a lot that I’m not getting into now.) I really wanted him to have that classic Robin look, especially basing him off of pre-death Jason in the old comics.

doodled vigilante Max. he looks like a common gothamite goon but that’s sort of the point. who’s expecting the guy dressed in all black to be doing good deeds and beating up criminals in crime alley? I could make it look more superhero-ey but it wouldn’t make sense since he’s not like a tech genius or rich. he’s just a poor kid he doesn’t have the resources for a cool suit!!!!!!

also being unmasked is incredibly dysphoric for him, being that he’s pre-transition for most of this period. his vigilante persona is sort of a way of expressing himself when he can’t do so in his normal life. it’s a bit selfish in that way. anyways, I’ve also been thinking about his powers. I don’t want him to have flashy or extremely strong abilities, so I gave him vibration-based ones. at minimum power (which right now is his maximum because he’s not trained) they give pounding headaches if he makes contact with someone’s head, or they can put more force behind his attacks. that’s pretty much it for now, he can’t do much else.

okay more talking about Max (my DC oc). So the main reason Max even ended up with the batfamily is because Jason sent him there for protection. The previous events were one of Red Hood’s rivals finding out his connection to Max, resulting in his kidnapping. Jason knows this’ll happen again, Max is just some impoverished kid, he can’t keep an eye on him 24/7. So, he sends him to Bruce. And when Jason finds out that Max is now in training under Bruce? He blows up.

long story short, since we were going to teach a bunch of elementary kids in a public school, we needed a professional spokesperson.... and finding one for free is like looking for a needle in hay. Especially with no connections.

Aside from hiring a spokesperson, we also needed to spend money for transportation, props, and snacks for the kids. All on the budget of five broke college students.

I love twst so much. The way they depict the boys repeatedly regressing to their problems really shows that personal struggles are an actual long-term battle, and not just a fever that you can cure with the magical potion called power of friendship.

I also like that their resolutions at the moment aren't always so childishly easy. Like Jamil. He's trapped, and he's still trapped because it's not a situation he has direct control over. The world just doesn't work like a story book.

But he realized that there are things he could do within those constraints. There are also areas within himself that he can change to make his situation suck less at the moment. It's like how Grim and Yuu escaped from their confines in Book 4 by digging a hole with a spoon lol. It's painfully slow, and the struggle is herculean, but they did it, nonetheless.

No matter how long it takes... He will seize freedom for himself.

Anyway I just finished Scarabia in Book 7 dreams. You have to read in between the lines to get the message, but when you do, it hits hard.

(Apologies if this will sound like I'm making light of his situation, but I'm not. Slavery in the real world is a completely different beast. But I'm not qualified to talk about that topic, and so I'm going to talk about something closer to my immediate circle instead.)

Jamil's situation can also be an allegory to children in toxic/abusive households. It's so easy to say "just get out of that house", but in reality, there are so many complicated factors that you can't just ignore. So many children are trapped inside their own homes, with no means to escape. But that doesn't mean they don't want to. Doesn't mean they're not trying to. In Jamil's case, his current resolution is not a childish "oh he got out!", but a more low-key and realistic: "He realized that he's not completely powerless. And that in itself is a huge step."

I'm just really impressed that twst somewhat presented this in an easy to understand format. God knows how many people, children or not, need the push or realization to get the courage to take the first step.
