9 Days of Lancaster Day 9: Dancing

It wasn’t often Ruby woke up grumpy, but today might be an exception. The sound of music was a beautiful thing. However, waking up at 10am on a weekend was a crime. The huntress opened her eyes and turned over in bed to find her partner missing. Against her will, she sat up and accepted the soft lighting seeping through the curtains. She just might fight Jaune today.

The girl slowly got out of their warm and cozy bed to go down stairs wear the source of the music was. It was only right that Jaune was a morning person. The world had to give him something Ruby would find unacceptable. At least it wasn’t pineapple on pizza. Still, it was ten in the morning!

The culprit of her awakening came into view halfway down the stairs. Draped in a cleaning apron and armed with a duster, the man swayed his hips around the apartment and hummed before the dust bunnies. He was really getting into it. How long has he been cleaning? The place was spotless. His head continued to bob and his footwork got fancier as the chorus kicked in. Try as she might, Ruby couldn’t fight the smile creeping up on her face.

Ruby: I did in fact ask for this life.

Jaune: 🎶It’s a new dawn. It’s a new day. It’s a new life… *turns head* !? For me~🎶 *holds out hand*

Ruby:*red* Oh boy…

Jaune:🎶And I’m feeling good~🎶

He dropped the duster and literally swept Ruby off her feet and into his arms, twirling her into waltzing position. She didn’t dare stop his antics but she didn’t have the energy for it either. Ruby let him lead completely, her body swaying to his movements almost like a marionette; it was getting incredibly hard to act unamused. He pulled her in close for head to lay on his chest as their dance continued.

Jaune:Good morning~

Ruby:You are so ridiculous. How are you so active so soon?

Jaune:I woke up and saw the cutest face next to me.

Ruby:I find that hard to believe since my pillow had drool on it.

Jaune:Since when have I hated the sight of you drooling?

Ruby:*red* Okay mister, I will step on your feet. I haven’t had any coffee yet and you’re cracking jokes.

She was twirled again before being lead into the kitchen over by the breakfast bar. Her boyfriend finally let her go so she could sit down. Ruby looked over at the coffee pot to fill it, only to see it was hot and ready. The sound of the microwave opening turned her head towards it to see Jaune walking to her with a plate of eggs, bacon, and cinnamon french toast. He placed it right in front of her, gave her a mug, then kissed her softly before going back to cleaning.

Okay, so living with a morning person wasn’t the worst thing ever. Ruby’s face was absolutely flushed. He literally spun her into a good mood. He even had the sugar and cream out! Ruby made her special brew and watched the man continue this work.

Ruby:It’s dangerous to treat me this well. You better be careful.

Jaune:You say that like you’re not already crazy about me.

Ruby:I can get crazier. The well is deep and my love is vast.

Jaune:Same here. All this is just a little reminder. Plus this place had to get cleaned anyways.

Ruby:I’ll help when I’m done.

Jaune:No need. This was actually the last thing. I turned on the music cause I was done and ready to wake you.

Ruby:Oh…then I guess I’ll enjoy a shower after this.

Jaune:Sounds like a plan.

Ruby:You’ll be there too. I’ll clean you up.

Jaune:An even better plan! *starts dancing again*

Ruby:Pfft, I love you. *swaying*

Jaune:Now you’re feeling it! I love you too.

Ruby took a sip of her coffee and kept swaying as she ate a delicious breakfast. Who knew love could be this melodic? She just might be dancing for the rest of her life.

9 Days of Lancaster Day 5: Night Time Walk

Late in night after many exams and an annoyingly long lecture, Ruby finds herself yearning for escape. She’s never been a terrible test taker, but she’s also never had a teacher like Dr. Obleck. No sane person makes a 250 question exam. Even Weiss of all people looked nervous taking it, which only made Ruby fear for her own grade.

With that nightmare behind her, she now walks aimlessly through Beacon’s courtyard until the slightest tug on her hoodie makes her whip around into karate chop position.

Ruby:Back off before I can Y- oh hey Jaune.

Jaune:H-Hello…ya good? You were walking like a zombie one second and ready to attack the next.

Ruby:Sorry. I’m…a little fried. *delfates* How’d you do on exams?

Jaune:Pretty good. I split them up between yesterday and today.

Ruby:That was an option!?

Jaune:Ummm

He watched the girl crumple over against him. She looked like Ren when people make too much noise in the library.

Jaune:How about we make a trip to a vending machine?

Ruby:That sounds nice…

She allowed herself to be taken by the hand and follow behind Jaune like a kite on a string. At the breeze was nice. The courtyard at night was always a pleasant place to be.

Jaune:So I’m guessing you were out here to cool off?

Ruby:Yeah. Walking helps sort out my thoughts. What brought you here?

Jaune:You.

Ruby:Oh. Hehe, my bad.

Jaune:It’s fine. I like being around you. It’s cozy.

Ruby:*red* What the heck man? My brain has enough to deal with right now. I’m out here to cool off! Not heat up!

Jaune:Ruby, I’ve said nicer things about you.

Ruby:Yeah well the more we spend time together, the less resistance I get to it. You’re like reverse poison.

Jaune:That’s called an antidote. Not how that’s used, and I’m positive that word was used in the exam. Are you confident in your grade?

Ruby:You get what I mean!

Jaune:Yeah I do. Maybe that’s what my dad meant by being persistent.

Ruby:Is that how he got your mom?

Jaune:Actually it was the other way around. She was like the most vocal supporter of him and always popped up to chat for one reason or another. Apparently she knew how to really draw a crowd and stick out.

Ruby:Sounds like a pretty cool woman. Personally I prefer trying to fit in.

Jaune:You blew up on the other side of this courtyard.

Ruby:Memememe shut up. You could’ve brought up my awesome display against a Nevermore, but nooooo. Had to be the first impression. I don’t bring up you puking on Yang’s shoe.

Jaune:What’s my collar ID in your scroll?

Ruby:….Touché.

The duo finally made it to one of many outside vending machines. Jaune swiped his scroll over the scanner and went over to sit at the bench while Ruby was free to get whatever she liked. He leaned back to get comfortable while a sudden thump against his lap made him flinch. It was giant packaged chocolate muffin. He looked at Ruby to see her holding one in her left, and two drinks in her right. She actually waited this time before tossing him a drink to catch.

Jaune:This was supposed to be your treat.

Ruby:Like I was about to let you sit there with nothing. Call it even for your company on this night.

She sat right next to him and wasted no time opening a blueberry muffin to devour while he ate his slower.

Jaune:Never thought my company would be worth a blueberry muffin and two bottles of juice.

Ruby:That’s pretty sad.

Jaune:I was being sarcastic!

Ruby:Yeah but you made it sound so sad. Also, it’s worth way more.

Jaune:More than Crescent Rose?

Ruby:That’s certainly a question with an answer.

Jaune:Wow!

Ruby:I’m joking! Of course it’s worth more! You chat with me about everything and…call me cozy. That’s a little bit more pricey than a scope. Maybe.

Jaune:Hey Ruby, do you miss your friends?

Ruby:Course I do. Some don’t keep in touch anymore but that’s fine. Others send a text every so often.

Jaune:Like your best friend.

Ruby:Didn’t have one of those.

Jaune:Really? Who was the me before me?

Ruby:Nobody.*shrugs* I had friends and got along with people but I’m serious when I say I can talk to you about everything. Not to knock the people at home. Maybe it was because so many people knew my family? My uncle did teach after all. Also… my mom drew a crowd easily too.

Jaune:Guess it runs in the family.

Ruby:Heh, maybe? They were pretty nice people to hangout with. Though I’d be lying if I said I didn’t wonder if some might’ve felt sorry for my family’s situation. It’s actually pretty weird how the transition here felt pretty-

Jaune:Freeing? Yeah, I definitely had my fair share of estranged friends back home. Wasn’t exactly Mr.Cool Guy. If I was drawing a crowd it was because I was probably landing on my face or losing a fight.

Ruby:Those people clearly need an eye exam. You’re plenty cool to me.

Jaune:Thanks. You’re cool too.

Ruby:Pfft, I know. Like I said earlier, do you remember what I did to the Nevermore? I ran up a cliff and reverse guillotined it. I’m awesome!

Jaune:Yeah you’re pretty cool when you’re not stressing over exams or blowing up.

Ruby:Hey!

She shoved him lightly, only to immediately receive one back. This prompted war! Both of the continued lightly nudging against one another, laughing the entire time at the meaningless “battle” they had.

Ruby grinned in victory as Jaune finally bowed out. She stuck her tongue out to gloat, failing to secure her muffin from him. Then he had the nerve to play to one weakness; height! Jaune raised his arm straight up out of reach. He was about to stand, but Ruby quickly tugged him down by his hoodie as she reached up. She might’ve scrambled too fast. Her own feet stumbled over themselves and she found her body falling forward. Her arm came down swiftly to brace herself against Jaune as he leaned back on reflex in an attempt to catch her.

His free hand now held her by the left shoulder, stopping Ruby inches away from his face. The two just sorta…stared in silence as their brains tried to keep up with the situation.

Ruby couldn’t explain what she did next. After a long day of thinking, she went on instinct, tilting her head slightly and closing her eyes. Then…she waited. Thank goodness it wasn’t for long. A subtlest, most delightful warmth gently pressed against her lips. Her head leaned forward just a little bit more to encourage the same attitude Jaune brought when he shoved back a minute ago. He didn’t back down this time either. Finally, Ruby leaned back and sat on the bench properly.

Thoughts quickly caught up with actions, and her hood came over her head in silence as she stared at her lap. Why the hell did she just go for it like that!? Ruby was seconds away from dashing off until a hand brought her stolen muffin back into her lap.

Ruby:Th-Thanks. Umm, you sure reverse poison isn’t the word?

Jaune:Honestly? Not sure of much right now.

Ruby:Same! Hehe, I’m so sorry. I just sorta…I don’t know.

Jaune:It’s fine. It…tasted like blueberries. What’s there to apologize about?

Ruby:*deep red*…..THANKS FOR THE TREAT!

She ran away faster than she’s ever had.

Jaune:Wait! Don’t- I’m sorr- *covers face* Whyyyyyy am I like this?

Before he could spiral too far into self sabotage, a gust of petal filled wind came by. Jaune looked up to see Ruby. She put the muffin right in hands, then kissed him again with both her hands holding his face, catching him off guard completely. This time when it ended, Ruby grabbed the chocolate muffin before running away again.

Jaune:…What?

Weiss:But why was it 250 questions!? You would have to answer every question in under a minute!

Yang:Weiss, let it go. The battle is over. Be like Blake.

Blake:Zzzz

Ruby walks into her dorm room briskly with her hood still up and muffin in hand. Without a word, she hops onto her bed.

Yang:So the walk didn’t help.

Weiss:Umm, excuse me!? Remember the last time you ate on the bed? Your meals are my crumbs!

Blake:That’s how Faunus talk about your family.

Weiss:Go back to sleep.

Blake:Stop yelling and I will.

Yang:Let Ruby stress eat. It’s been a long day. We just need to all zone out. Though I’m kinda surprised. Blueberry is your go to. They run out in the machines?

Ruby:…I just had a taste for it tonight.

Ruby:Y’know if there’s one thing I like to brag about when it comes to you Jaune, it’s how cautious you are. Strong shield, quick thinker, lots of aura, and practical armor! The modern definition of a tank. Haha, clearly that went to your head cause…

She gestures to left broken arm and right foot trapped in a medical boot. The bruise ridden boy slowly turned his head away as he laid miserably in bed.

Ruby:Don’t turn from me! In what world do you block a head bash from a Goliath!? You’re lucky your shield took the impact! That was reckless!

Jaune:Gee, I wonder if I’ve had bad influences? Who would face a giant grimm head on in the heat of a crisis?

Ruby:So did you blackout on the parts where it didn’t work!?

Jaune:We were spread thin and couldn’t give an inch. Hey, at least I killed it. That’s gotta be worth something, right? In the moment I felt pretty cool.

Ruby:…Sigh You did look pretty bad ass.

Jaune:Learned that from my friends too.

Ruby:Well now you’re gonna learn something I got from a dear friend; don’t rush in! If your calculated risk involves charging in then it’s a bad idea. *crosses arms* If you weren’t you, these injuries would be a lot worse. Trust me, you wouldn’t be laughing if your ribs broke, or if you got more tusk than trunk. It’s not fun seeing a person you love go flying before hitting the ground.

Her pout was in full effect. Not as a means to guilt trip, but because the scene replayed in her head. Jaune quit trying to make light of the moment upon seeing her genuine concern all over her face. He reached out to her to the best of his ability.

Not wanting him to strain himself even further, Ruby automatically got closer. The boy dared to have the nerve to wrap his arm around her waist, pulling her ever closer until she had not choice to set next to him on the bed. She turned her nose up at the embrace, feeling his head rest against her stomach and lap like some sort of golden retriever.

Ruby:I’m still mad at you.

Jaune:I know. I’m sorry. I’m glad I get to see you be mad though. I’m happy to be seeing you at all.

Ruby:*red*….That’s so unfair. The Goliath couldn’t have knocked out some wit? *rubs his head* It really did get crazy out there. I need to up my speed.

Jaune:Can’t be everywhere at once, Rubes. This is all on me. We all make our calls.

Ruby:Yeah. It just sucks when there’s not many to choose from. I like to think I’m clever in my own right, but it pisses me off I don’t see another call you could’ve made. Jaune, you were awesome out there, but I wish you didn’t have to be.

Jaune:Pfft, wow. Never in my life did I think I’d hear that. It’s like a sad gold star. Look at the bright side at this. Everyone is safe. This was a live and learn opportunity. Not to mention now I have a month of you doting on me. I

Ruby:I miss when this was the other way around.

Jaune:Haha, learning experience. I gotta say, I kinda like the lap pillow experience.

Ruby:*red* You could ask for this whenever! Just wait till you’re good enough to stand on your own; I’m making your physical therapy hell.

Ruby:To late. I’m also going to be a hard ass about your medication and rest.

Jaune:*red* It’s the medication. Ignore my nonsense.

Ruby:I swear, maybe this is karma leveling itself out? Looks like I got my hands full.

She bends down and kisses his head before getting up to stretch and make her way. Towards the door. Honestly she should be more upset, but found herself appreciating those silver linings. No time like quality time. That’s what her mom used to say anyway.

Ruby:You hungry? I’ll make you something.

Jaune:I’m fine, thanks.

Ruby:Then I guess I’ll be back in about five minutes.

Jaune:Grabbing a snack?

Ruby:Getting the bath ready. Somebody is gonna need helping hands for awhile~ *leaves*

9 Days of Lancaster Day 1: Beach Party

It started as a calm afternoon with a young man lying in bed peacefully. Moments of rest were hard to find and this was certainly no different as his room door swung open, jolting him up.

Ruby:Jaune! You’re late!

Jaune:Huh!? What!?

Ruby:Oh. Were you sleeping? My bad hehe.

Jaune:No, I was just resting my head. Umm, what am I late for?

Ruby:The beach party, duh! Remember? We all planned the day off? Nora’s been hyping it up. The set up is pretty much done.

Jaune:Oh yeah, right. *rubs face*

Ruby:You okay…? You seem a little…not excited.

Jaune:I’d be lying if I said I was. Would it be alright if sat it out? I’m kinda tired of sitting on beaches and looking at waves…

Ruby:Oh…right.

Jaune:Sorry.

Ruby:No it’s alright. *sits on his bed* Why didn’t you say anything sooner? We could’ve planned something else completely.

Jaune:Everyone looked so excited! I didn’t want to bring down the mood. Though I guess not showing up at all does that too, doesn’t it?

Ruby:Well…kinda. Sorta. Yeah… Look, it won’t be like Ever After. It’s party with our friends. Not an endless survival experience.

Jaune:I know you’re right, but I think I’m sick of sand.

Jaune:Yeah it’s been rough hehe. I’m really in my own head. I’ll be ready in a moment.

Jaune:Well…there’s one thing I never did in the Ever After when it came to the beach.

The girl clung to him tightly as he rode a jet ski through an obstacle course. Ruby had never been this far from shore before. She never realized it might be a problem. All her friends were fighting in volleyball or grilling while she tried not to think about falling in. At least Jaune was laughing.

Jaune:Haha! Still feeling shaky? You said you knew had to swim.

Ruby:Never had to in open water! It’s a lot bigger up close.

Jaune:Heh, fair enough. Back to shore it is.

Ruby:We can stay out longer! Just don’t go flying. I’m tiny! The wind will drag me away.

Jaune let the jet ski idle on the water. He briefly got Ruby’s grip off of his body to turn himself around to look at her. Never did he think he’d see the fearsome Ruby Rose trembling in a strawberry bikini.

A small wave made her gasp. Before she could adjust, Jaune’s hand wrapped around her lower back, pulling her closer to him for security. Ruby could feel her face getting hot. She’d been holding him all this time but now it felt crazy for him to be holding her back.

Jaune:For what it’s worth, you look really nice.

Ruby: Thank you. I wasn’t really confident at first in a two piece, but this design was really cute.

Jaune:Thanks for humoring my request. It means a lot.

Ruby:Never would’ve thought of it being further out into the water. You really do have a problem with sand now.

Jaune:I think I just needed a different perspective. Plus here, the waves sound nicer.

Ruby:Any reason you wanted a riding buddy?

Jaune:I guess…I didn’t want to feel lonely anymore. With you around, it actually feels like a vacation.

Ruby:…*closes eyes*

His hand found a home in the red strands of her hair. Ruby’s body sunk deeper into his embrace, the both of them basking in sunlight. Another quiet moment found. Until…
