Supercentenarians (those people who are more than 110 years old) are a uniquely informative population not only because they surpass centenarians in age, but because they appear to age more slowly and with fewer incidences of chronic age-related disease (like Alzheimer's, heart disease and cancer) than centenarians. Scientists at Sanford Burnham Prebys and AgeX Therapeutics, a biotechnology company, published their study in Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications. For the first time, these scientists have reprogramed donor B-lymphoblastoid cell lines (LCL) (a type of blood cell) derived from three different people- a 114-year-old person, a 43-year-old healthy disease-free person, and an 8-year-old child with a rapid ageing disease (Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome (HGPS)) into induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) and compared iPSC of an old aged person with the iPSC of healthy adult and iPSC of the child with HGPS. They found that it is possible to transform cells from the supercentenarian as easily as the cells from healthy adult and the child with HGPS are transformed. Moreover, complete telomere resetting also occurred in reprogrammed supercentenarian iPSC. Although the resetting of telomere in supercentenarian iPSCs occurred less frequently as compared to iPSC of a healthy adult and the child with HGPS. As the mechanism of how our brain responds to smell is well understood, the scientists at Intel published a paper in nature which proposes that they have created a neuromorphic chip that consists of neural electrical circuit carved onto a silicon chip which gets activated during the odour sensing process by the brain. When an already designed algorithm that imitates the electrical signals flowing through the circuit is trained on the chip by using 10 existing sample data set of smells, it accurately distinguishes them with far fewer training sample than a conventional chip. Astronomers have observed a distant planet where it probably rains iron.

It sounds like a science fiction movie, but this is the nature of some of the extreme worlds we're now discovering.Wasp-76b, as it's known, is a monster gas planet that's twice the width of our Jupiter. Its unusual name comes from the UK-led Wasp telescope system that detected the world four years ago.

Wasp-76b orbits so close in to its host star, its dayside temperatures exceed 2,400C - hot enough to vaporise metals.

The planet's nightside, on the other hand, is 1,000 degrees cooler, allowing those metals to condense and rain out.

A team of Swiss researchers describes how they used the new Espresso instrument at the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope in Chile to study the chemistry of Wasp-76b in fine detail.

This thing orbits so close to its star, it's essentially dancing in the outer atmosphere of that star and being subjected to all kinds of physics that, to put it bluntly, we don't really understand," he told BBC News.
