A couple questions: - What is the scariest cryptid you’ve ever learned about? - what is your favorite cryptid? - could you do a post about the ‘brain eating bear’ of Africa?
-I wanna say the Wendigo, but that's not really a cryptid. Other than that, I've never been scared of any cryptids.
-I'm a total sucker for mothman
-I'll take it into consideration! :D

8 cryptids in the Great Lakes area!
Tumblr media
1. Bessie
Tumblr media
One of Lake Erie's most famous cryptids is Bessie, also known as South Bay Bessie. The first reported appearance of Bessie happened in 1793, and more frequent sightings have happened in the last three decades. Bessie is snake-ish and 30-40 ft long, at least a foot in diameter, with gray skin. Her appearance follows the patterns of a typical lake monster. While duck-hunting near Sandusky, Ohio in 1793, the captain of the ship Felicity observed a large snake necked creature described as “more than a rod (16 ½ ft.) in length”. On July 1817, the crew of a sailboat saw a 30 to 40-foot long serpent-like creature, with dark coloring. Bessie was spotted again near Toledo, when French settlers found a extremely large monster on the beach that appeared to be approaching death. The settlers reported it as around 25 feet in length and similar to a large sturgeon, despite the fact that it had arms. The terrified men ran away, and upon returning, the monster was gone, and assumed to be carried off by the tide. All that it left behind were marks in the sand and silver scales about 1 inch in diameter. Bessie’s most recent sighting was in 1997, when a video and shaky pictures were taken. A reward of $100,000 has been offered by Huron Lagoons Marina for the capture of Bessie, dead or alive.
2. Igopogo
Tumblr media
Igopogo is a famed cryptid said to live in Lake Simcoe, Ontario, Canada. It is also referred to as "Kempenfelt Kelly" after a nearby bay. The head of the Igopogo has a bone structure similar to a dog’s, which is uncommon in cryptozoological creatures. According to witnesses, the creature has been spotted resting in the sun for long extensive periods of time; which is evidence for its ability to breathe oxygen.
3. Lake Erie Chomper
Tumblr media
We have reports of people retreating from out of the depths of Lake Erie in excruciating pain because an unusual animal had bit chunks off of their legs. It all began in 2001, near Port Dover, Ontario, when Brenda McCormack was swimming in the lake. Not long after her swim began, she felt sharp teeth taking a bite out of her calf. She quickly swam ashore, bleeding heavily from the wound. There was a 6-inch wide pattern of circular bite marks, from a jaw shape similar to the jaw of the Cookie Cutter shark. The next day, a man and his young son were bitten by the same terrifying lake creature. The boy was rushed to the hospital and was in critical condition. Ever since then, the Lake Erie Chomper has left the people of Port Dover in peace.
4. Leelanau Lake Monster
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This next cryptid is one of my favorites! It resides in Lake Leelanau, in Michigan. The Leelanau lake monster has a long neck resembling a tree stump, a long tail and two huge eyes. It’s not your average plesiosaur-esque lake monster. The most detailed account was reported in 1910. While fishing in the lake, teenager William Gauthier decided to dock his boat on a stump. Once his rope grazed the stump, two huge eyes suddenly opened. A few seconds later, the creature dove beneath William’s boat. FOR INFO, READ THIS ARTICLE HERE.

Cryptid of the day: The Loveland Frogman
In Ohio legend, the Loveland Frogman, sometimes called the Loveland Lizard, is an anthropomorphic frog observed in the Loveland, Ohio area. In May 1955, a local businessman gave an account of spotting three frog-faced people with leathery skin, webbed fingers, and webbed feet at the side of the road, standing 3 to four feet tall. The man stopped his car to watch the figures converse, then fled the scene when one of the figures held a wand over its head and created a spray of sparks.
At 1:00 AM on March 3rd, 1972, Loveland police officer Ray Shockey was driving when he saw a creature rush across the road in front of his car. He described it as being 3 to 4 feet tall and 50 to 75 pounds, with leathery skin and a face like a frog or lizard. The animal “crouched like a frog” before standing on its hind legs, climbing a guardrail, and jumping into a river. After hearing his description, Shockey’s sister drew an artist's rendition of the creature.
Tumblr media
On August 3rd, 2016, two teenagers, Sam Jacobs and his girlfriend, were playing Pokémon Go near Loveland’s Lake Isabella. Jacobs said, “We saw a huge frog near the water.  Not in the game, this was an actual giant frog. I took a couple of pictures and a video ’cause I’d never seen one that big.  Then the thing stood up and walked on its hind legs. I swear on my grandmother’s grave that this is the truth,” Jacobs said.  “I’m not sure whether it was a Frogman or just a giant frog.  Either way, I’ve never seen anything like it.” Jacobs took pictures of the creature.

Cryptid Generator
I found this cryptid generator: https://en.shindanmaker.com/699965
Here’s what it said about me:
Lucy is a 50-foot-tall phantom with fish-like features that has glowing red eyes and can duplicate itself.
Pretty accurate.

Cryptid of the Day
Champy
Tumblr media
(This is the updated version.) Champy is a lake monster that is said to live in Lake Champlain which is between New York, Vermont, and Canada. Usually described a lot like the Loch Ness Monster of Scotland (looking like a plesiosaur), it has been appearing since at least the 1800′s (a fake report puts it at 1609 but this has been proven false) and has over 300 sightings. The most famous piece of evidence of Champy is the Mansi Photograph(see above). Taken by Sandra Mansi in 1977, the photo has what looks like a long necked creature out on the waters surface. The photo has been tested and no signs of editing have been discovered, But researchers can’t decide on what is actually in the photo. Skeptics say that what was seen could have been a log, a fish jumping out of the water, or maybe a bird diving below the surface. Some people think that Champy could also be a surviving Zeuglodon, a species of extinct snake-like whale. Others think it is an unknown species of giant eel.

A List of Illinois Cryptids
(based on my extremely popular Wisconsin cryptids post)
1. The Enfield Horror
In the 1940s, a bounding, monkey-like creature was seen in Mount Vernon. In the 1970s, a similar animal, this time with three legs and eyes as burning like coals, was seen several times in Enfield by a young boy and his neighbor, then later by a radio news director. Loren Coleman, founder of the International Cryptozoology Museum in Maine, speculated at the time: "It made quite a stir, and not so much now. Some saw a deformed kangaroo. I thought of it as a variation on an ape."
Tumblr media
2. Giant Birds
In 1977, a young boy outside Lincoln was attacked by giant birds; according to reports at the time, he was carried 30 feet and dropped. Farther south, in the town of Alton, 17th-century explorers once found an image of a dragonlike bird painted on a cliff. The Piasa, a Native American myth, has lurked in the area ever since. Linda Godfrey, an author of many books about cryptids, said: "There's a group nickname for these large birds: 'Bigclaw.' But my favorite variation is 'Batsquatch.' Isn't that kind of terrific?"
Tumblr media
3. Black Panthers
(No, not the superhero.) Panthers once roamed all over North America, but they hunted to near extinction in the eastern half of the United States. In 2008, a cougar was shot and killed near the Chicago River in the Chicago neighborhood of Roscoe Village. Even more mysterious, however, are all the sightings of black panthers. It is a genetic anomaly for a wild cat to be pitch black in color, and no black panthers have ever been captured or photographed (most “black panthers” are actually jaguars or leopards). However, several have been spotted in Illinois. In 2001, a black panther was seen on three separate occasions in Monroe County and as recently as 2007, a black panther was seen around Bloomington. Are these mysterious animals fact or fable? Until one is captured or photographed in the wild, we will never know for sure.
Tumblr media
4. Farmer City Monster
With its bulky form and shining yellow eyes, the Farmer City Monster was one of the strangest beasts to plod across Illinois during the summer of 1970. This beast was more reliable than most, since eyewitnesses included the Farmer City police officer assigned to track it down. Sightings began in early July, when three teens saw it at their campsite in a field near Salt Creek, and spread to Bloomington, Heyworth, and Waynesville. Everyone who saw it described its glowing eyes, but it was not a hostile creature. At each encounter, the Farmer City Monster ran away as soon as it had been spotted. It was last seen on August 16, 1970, when it ran across the road in front of a truck near Waynesville.
