makeover: the ward family

I decided to give the famous Miss Judith Ward a family for my game... and it sorta turned into its own thing LOL. So here is my backstory for the Ward family:

Once upon a time, Judith Ward was a married woman and gave birth to two children: Julian & Justina. Shortly after Justina was born, however, their father left the picture, leaving them to be raised by Judith alone. Juggling parenthood and an aspiring career proved to be difficult, and in the end, her two kids ended up not being the priority.

Fast forward to their adulthood, the Ward family ties are strained. Julian wants nothing to do with their mother, and instead strives to be the attentive and loving parent that he never had while growing up to his own two kids: Emmitt & Jessie. He lives a happy and private life as a stay at home author with his high school sweetheart Eliana. 

Meanwhile, all Justina wants is her mother’s approval. Despite her accomplishments as a model-turned-make up mogul, it still isn’t enough. Things became even worse after Justina became a single mother to her daughter, Juliet. After a nasty fight, Justina was forced to distance the both of them from Judith. 

Now that Judith has reached a point in her life where the movies and show business won’t ask for her, she realizes that unless she fixes things with her family, she’ll spend the rest of her days all alone in Ward manor. She wants to make amends and be a family again, but it might be too late for that now.

Shakespeare: I will create two teenage characters who are explicitly proto-postmodern examinations of the nature of character and fate within fictional narrative. I am their creator and - like their parents within the narrative - I exercise complete control over their fates, no matter how much they struggle against it. In defense of Shakespeare's Daughters

When students find out that:

Shakespeare has no living descendants (and that's why we don't have to ask "Which Shakespeare?" like we do with the Bach family),

That he did have a son, once, but that boy died when he was only ten years old, and

That son was named "Hamnet" (not a typo, BTW)

Those students who go on to become Shakespearean scholars can get a bit obsessed when it comes to themes of fathers, sons, and grief (particularly in that one play about a Prince of Denmark).

So I'd like to take this time to point out that Shakespeare was also the father to two daughters: his firstborn, Susanna, and Judith, Hamnet's twin sister.

And to help me make the point that the Father/Daughter relationship was important to him, and not just a consolation prize, here's a few of the plays that hinge on it (an incomplete list):

The Tempest: a father and daughter as the only humans on a tropical island.

Romeo and Juliet: The tragedy unfolds with exponential speed when Juliet's father decides that she must marry Tybolt immediately.

Much ado About Nothing: The comedy almost becomes a tragedy when Leonato rejects his daughter during the wedding ceremony.

The Winter's Tale: In the first half of the play, the jealous king rejects his infant daughter, wrongly thinking she is a bastard. In the second half of the play, we see the daughter as a teenager, and her relationship with her adoptive father, a shepherd; the play is resolved when she returns home, with her adoptive father, to her birth father.

Hamlet: Let's face it -- the whole play gets mired in schemes, secrets, and second guesses until Ophelia's response to her father's death unleashes a flood of action.

Merry Wives of Windsor: the "B Plot" is all about how the young adult daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Page successfully schemes to marry the young man she actually loves, instead of either of the arranged marriages her parents are hoping for.

thinking about how every iwbft character essentially leads two different lives. there’s the ark, of course, who have their celebrity life and their life behind the masks, behinde the facades. there’s fereshteh/angel, who has her fandom life and her home life (something very notably divided through her name). there’s juliet, who is dealing with a similar divide, though for her it’s exemplified through the life she shows fereshteh and the life she has at home (also symbolised through julied vs. judith). and there’s bliss, who stands at the precipice between normal and celebrity life, all due to her relationship with rowan. even mac is leading a double life.

where it gets interesting in iwbft is where the lines between these lives are blurred and stepped over, both by the characters themselves and by others. the first big climax of the book is when fereshteh crosses into ‘celebrity land’ by seeing jimmy’s other life, something that then causes her fandom life to change and eventually be rejected in favour of something more akin to her home life. on the other hand, the ark’s arc (lol) is about them rejecting the image they’ve created for themselves and wanting to lead a quieter life, something resembling normalcy as much as it can. bliss and rowan’s breakup similarly has bliss move away from the divide between her two lives, etc etc.

at the end of the book, each character has to some extent managed to remove the divide between their two lives, not by choosing one life over the other, but by creating something completely different, something more real, something they will hopefully learn to feel more comfortable in. even if it’s not an ideal life yet, it’s theirs to embrace and to mould for themselves.

Rachel Webb was the first Juliet I ever saw, and for that her Juliet will always be special to me. I have been so grateful to have seen her grace the Sondheim stage as many times as I have, both as Juliet and as Judith. I will miss her Judith dearly, but I cannot wait to see her slay as Juliet on tour!
