Okay TAKE TWO: tomorrow’s news!

Yay, this is the 1930s reporter au that I always want to talk about because I love it so much but I still haven't finished it 😫😂💗

So Davey and Jack and all the guys are newsboys, right? (they're like maybe ten years aged up in this au) and some big names are muscling around trying to buy up papers and Davey's already so busy dealing with his family and trying to pretend he's not in love with his best friend but he decides he's going to fight to keep the business alive too. Because why not. :) Have a bit of Javid:

“Thanks for dinner,” Jack said eventually, either the sunset or the nicotine turning him sleepy and calm. Davey let him slump, let him come closer and closer until their shoulders couldn’t be classified as touching anymore, but rather leaning. Jack’s hair tickled underneath Davey’s ear. “You did good today, with the dumb Fonda story.” “Thanks for coming with me,” Davey said. “My partner in crime.” “Partners,” Jack said lazily, and Davey just knew he was thinking about cowboys. Rolling his eyes, Davey settled back against the brick so Jack wasn’t so heavy. “Yee haw,” he said, because it would make Jack happy. “Yee haw,” Jack replied, because he knew Davey only pretended to be irritated by it.

Fake Fic Title:

From The Ladder’s Last Rung

Hello! I am fairly sure (after some googling) that your title is a reference to a Noah Kahan song!

Anyway, to me "last rung" can mean either the highest or the lowest point on a ladder, depending on your perspective, and that is the premise of this fic concept!

Race goes through elementary/middle/high school with a reputation of being both the class clown and one of the smartest people in his grade. What most people don't know, though, is that he uses the class clown part of his personality to deflect from the fact that he is not doing as well, grades-wise, as people might think--sure, he takes AP history when it's available, but he never gets higher than a B- on his report card for it. So when senior year rolls around, the combination of good grades in most other subjects and extracurriculars that make him seem interesting means he is able to get into one of his reach schools.

Anyway, Race goes off to school and he's very excited about the whole thing. He can finally put history, which is his least favorite subject, in the metaphorical rearview mirror; he's going to major in math and minor in dance; he's going to join all the clubs that weren't available to him in high school. During course registration, he ignores the suggestion from his RA that he should perhaps consider only taking one math class his first semester and registers for honors calculus (yes, this is a thing at some colleges) and an upper-level math class that only has a prerequisite of calc 1 and 2.

The problem with college, especially the first semester, is that it is often a big adjustment from high school no matter what your high school was like. Classes that really should not be taught lecture-style are taught that way, you're (sometimes) in a new city/town and even if you aren't you probably don't know a ton of people, and suddenly you have a much higher degree of independence. So Race is dealing with the general first semester freshman woes of making new friends and having a roommate and balancing time and navigating dining halls, but he's also dealing with the fact that for the first time in his life, he's struggling in his math classes. And that makes everything worse for him, because if he can't even do the one thing he's supposed to be really really good at, then how can he get through the rest of college? Does he even deserve to be there? Clearly his college made a mistake when they accepted him despite his less-than-perfect history grades. (those are his thoughts, not mine; he does deserve to be there)

As I mentioned earlier, he's used to using his class clown-esque personality to deflect from what's actually going on in his life, so almost no one knows how stressed he is. He still talks to his high school friends a lot, but so many of them are at their colleges having (as far as he's aware) a much easier time adjusting, so he doesn't want to talk about it with most of them. He goes to office hours sometimes, but he is very careful about which problems he gets help with to keep up the illusion that he knows what's going on. This would be less of a problem if he met up with his classmates to do homework, but he's worried he won't be useful enough to them. And obviously he would rather die than tell his new college acquaintances how overwhelmed he's feeling. The semester goes by in a blur of homework stress and club meetings and conversations where he just barely manages to convince everyone that he's doing okay (it's a lot harder than it used to be), all overlaid by the feeling that he's not good enough.

Being a college student gets easier, but not easy enough that he's able to turn everything around by the end of the semester. He withdraws from one of his math classes, and doesn't do great in the other, and he does...okay in his other classes. It's not the end of the world, but it does mean he has to drop out of the honors calculus sequence and possibly retake the class he withdrew from. But that doesn't stop Race from feeling like a failure, even though the only people who see his grades are him and his parent(s) (I haven't decided what his parent situation is in this), and they're understanding. It'll be easy to make up the credits he lost from the course withdrawal by taking some lower credit electives in later semesters, and he has seven more semesters to raise his GPA and figure things out.

And then we come back to the title and my (mis)interpretation of it (I wasn't just rambling pointlessly this whole time): To Race's parent(s), he's fallen off the bottom rung of the metaphorical ladder, so it's pretty manageable to get back up and keep going. But to Race, he's fallen off the top rung, because he can't stop thinking that he peaked in high school.

Things do get better for him, and later on he'll probably experience stuff that's way worse and wish it were just a rough first semester of undergrad, but in the moment, it really sucks!

(my next long form project... here is the tentative first several paragraphs)

Burt Hummel became an Ohio congressman when Kurt was thirteen. Before that, he was Lima’s mayor, and, before that, he was a grieving husband using his autoparts garage to raise awareness for his wife’s breast cancer, who then, once she passed, was a widow using his garage to help organize a charity benefit. 

Most of Ohio knows him as a Congressman first, family-man second, but, to Kurt, Burt’s still the same guy who taught him how to ride a bike and who attended drawn-out, scripted tea-parties. 

Politics is a job that pays the bills. Kurt doesn’t know much about politics, even now, at seventeen and as a high school senior. He understands enough to get by in class and pass his exams. When he accompanies his dad at local events and on the campaign trail, he can answer basic questions about himself or about his Dad’s policies.

Kurt doesn’t have to feign deep-seated understanding for long. Rather quickly, Congressman Hummel’s PR team will wisk Kurt away, escort him to some back room or to the car, because questions quickly turn invasive, speculative, and, frankly, the questions are unrelated to Burt’s platform and campaign promises.

It’s the 90s, Kurt is gay, and, apparently, that’s all reporters want to ask Kurt about.

🙃 What’s a weird fact that you know: ehhm its really hard to think of something on the spot.. way back in the day men thought women experienced sexual pleasure from riding bikes. the shape for “women’s bikes” was designed so that women would sit more upright so they wouldn’t rub off on their saddles as much to not experience sexual stimulation while riding. Obviously the thought of riding a regular/“male” bike bringing sexual stimulation to women is absolute bullshit, but men were fragile back in the day so they couldn’t risk it.

Hm I can't really think of a fic that people didn't "get". I'm kind of a heart on my sleeve kind of person and I think my writing reflects that in a way. The purpose and heart of my stories are usually right there on the surface.

That said, I think there are some nuances I wish I could have written better - particularly in Witch Wanted. I really wanted there to be an element of learning to accommodate people you love and how it doesn't have to be a barrier to full and meaningful relationships and I am not sure how well that comes across. Regardless that's one of my more marmite stories but the people that like it seem to get a lot out of it which is all I can ask for as an author :)

Always! I don't always respond right away, but I always respond eventually. I appreciate getting comments and I want people to know that I've read them and appreciated them. And it can be fun to have a little chat about the story I'm creating sometimes, too :)

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

He Forgets Me, He Forgets Me Not. It's a very sad one-shot that ends with major character death and a funeral, so, yeah.

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

I don't think I ever write happy endings? Just kidding, I probably have more happy endings than sad. Happiest is maybe Keep It Simple? Ends with a proposal and I think it's really understated and sweet and yeah.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

Surprisingly not really... which is good because I'm Delicate and don't handle criticism of my creative endeavours well.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Bestie a better question is if I write anything other than smut. I have written... so much smut. Out of curiosity I checked the top tags on my explicit rated fics, and this is the list (17 fics total for reference):

I don't but it's really only because I've never written for a fandom other than Glee. I have a few ideas swirling in my head for Glee AUs based in another universe, but I'm not sure if that would count even if I did get around to writing them.

Not to my knowledge. I've considered trying to translate my own fics into French for the practice, but then I remembered I'm not even remotely good enough at French to do that.

Kurtbastian <3 there's just something about them you know? Maybe you don't. But that's okay, because I do, and that's what matters.

15. WIP you want to finish but doubt you will?

The Hazards of Love series... I had a whole thing planned out when I first started it, and I breezed through the first two parts, but then I got distracted with other things and it just feels way too hard to come back to now and I feel like I've changed a lot as a writer, too... and it's kind of niche and not something most people would want to read anyway, so I don't even have that as a motivator.

16. What are your writing strengths?

I think I'm good at dramatic scenarios/describing the feelings of a character who is Going Through It. I love a good internal monologue that involves freaking out about something or discovering something about themselves or denying something about themselves or whatever else. I also really love writing big blow-out arguments, and I think I'm pretty good at those, too.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Actually writing anything lol. But also I kind of struggle with writing group settings or anything where stuff is actually happening? I get so caught up in writing dialogue and internal thoughts that I don't really know what to do when there are actually Things Occurring.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in a fic?

I wouldn't do it beyond a word or two because I just don't know any other languages well enough to do that. I'm not opposed to it in theory if someone knows multiple languages or has help from someone who does, but ideally they'd also provide a translation so I don't need to take it to Google translate myself (and potentially lose some of the meaning)

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Glee and I'm still here babeyyyyyy

20. Favourite fic you've written?

Gotta be my baby, It Was Only A Kiss. She is my most successful fic by an absolutely absurd margin, but honestly I think she deserves it. I poured a lot of effort into that story and it wasn't always fun but it paid off really well. It's definitely the work that I'm most proud of, and I think has some of my best writing.

13) your strengths as an author

I think I'm decently good at not making the easiest/most obvious choice - I hope that my stories make sense without being entirely predictable. I try to make my characters complex enough that they do unexpected things which can still be justified by the narrative. I also think I'm strong with setting - or at least, setting is important to me and I try to pay attention to it. A writer friend once told me that she hated having to think about setting, that she wished all her scenes could just take place in a white void, but I try to play with how the setting informs the plot and vice versa.

14) do you make playlists for your current wips?

Generally no. I had a playlist for In Orbit, but that's the exception, not the norm.

17) if you could give your fledgling author self any advice, what would it be?

"each other" is a two word phrase, not one word. I'm sorry that upsets you, but please god you cannot change english spelling conventions by force of will. Also please put spaces before and after parenthetical statements. Other than that you're doing great, babe. There's a lot you don't know, but you'll get there through practice and life experiences.

Yeah I tagged all my posts about going to Hedwig with my hatai trip, so weeeh. Obsessed with the fact that you just knew it was gonna be something fandom related. And my pet rabbit has been dead for, I think, 7 years by now. Wack. I still talk about it. A few weeks ago, me and some other people came along to someone’s official legal transition, aka he was legally going to change name and gender, and he was so nervous so we just talked constantly to distract him. So I told this story, but the employee of the municipality returned with the forms just when I said “and then her body was lying there in our garden, with no head in sight��� and the employee looked so fucking alarmed, so I quickly added “bunny, rabbit, we’re talking about a rabbit!!!”
