a/n: hi anon! this scenario is the cutest - thanks for requesting it! i just had to see the scene for myself, and i know exactly why you can't stop thinking about it - it was adorable! i did make a little twist, i hope you don't mind - it's basically a bit more detailed and deep than just the pool scene, but the scene in itself is a big part of these headcanons! and your english is perfect babes, don't worry! i hope you love it.

It feels blue, serene, and calm - yet cold and lonely. The sapphire-colored water is hitting your shins continuously, yet it’s not aggressive or scary. It’s welcoming, ataractic, even. You sit unaccompanied on the pool’s edge, kicking your feet through the deep Adam’s ale. You sigh as you think of what would complete the calm inside you - him. You have no clue that he, however, is…

You have been out there all alone for God knows how long, and he’s only seeing you now that he is home from work. He can feel his heart throb upon seeing you. Why are you out here all by yourself? 

He doesn’t break his silence. Instead, he simply walks up to you and sits beside you, dangling his feet in the blue water, matching you. Although he’s wearing jeans and a hoodie, he’s still accompanying your feet underwater with his own - always being his actions that speak out to you, are the loudest, and make your heart flutter the most. 

Your eyes meet his almost immediately, your lips curling into a small smile as he removes his mask. 

“I’ve missed you, Simon.” You grin, feeling his hand hesitantly brush against yours. His scarred face is tranquil, telling you he’s completely comfortable with you. It took time for you two to get to this point in your relationship - but you would do it again in a heartbeat if you had to.

With a tame smile, he lets his shaky hand rest on top of yours. “Why are you here all alone?” The concern in his voice is subtle, but you can smell it and touch it - you know he’s worried for you. 

“I guess I just got bored. I missed you a lot, you know?” You shrug, nodding softly to signal to him that you’re all right. “You need to be careful. What if you get hurt?” “I think I know my way around our pool, Simon. I’ll be fine.” Your tone is playful, masking the gut-wrenching feeling you can never get used to. You sigh, knowing that his worry for you can easily turn to agitation. 

Your gazes turn to the cold water both of your feet plopped into. The muteness between you two is comforting, but you can feel the tension in the air. You can’t help but worry for Simon. He’s a hard worker, a loving boyfriend, and a thoughtful soul, yet a broken one. 

“Why do I feel like there’s something you aren’t telling me?” You break the silence, looking at Simon’s hand that sits cozily on top of yours. “Are you okay?” “I’m fine.” He quickly responds before he looks at you, his brown eyes softening immensely, sending chills down your spine. “I… I’ve just missed you.” 

His words hit you like a truck. It’s hard for him to express his gratitude and love for you, having built up several thick walls of stoicism and numbness to avoid all loving interactions. But now that he’s with you - comfortable, adored, and safe, he can tell you anything on his mind, breaking down each of his walls one at a time. 

“I’ve missed you, too.” You place a small peck on his cheek before your eyes dart to the water before you. 

“I kinda want to get in.” You sigh, changing the subject. It’s hard for Simon to talk about his feelings, hell, it’s hard for him to talk about himself, and you respect that. You’ll do anything in your power for him to feel content. 

“Why don’t you?” “I don’t know.” “What about if I get in with you?” Your head shoots in his direction with a wide grin, snickering as you scoot closer to him. “You’d do that for me?” “You’re actin’ like I’m not your boyfriend.” He rolls his eyes, making you chuckle even harder. “Well damn, sorry!” “Fuckin’ hell.” He takes a deep breath, sliding into the pool as you stare at him in shock. “So you were serious?” “Don’t be a pain in the ass and get in.” He shivers slightly at the feeling of the frigid water embracing his anatomy, wishing you’d come and hold him - you could make the Atlantic Ocean feel like a hot tub. “Can I prepare myself first?” You bite back your laugh, teasing him. 

Simon shakes his head in annoyance, grabbing your waist firmly and lifting you into the pool as you protest, you both laughing till the warmth inside you radiates off you. 

He holds you close, allowing you to wrap your legs and arms around him. Your forehead rests against his, noses and lips brushing past each other as your guys’ cheeks burn, almost stinging you. 

When you finally lower your lips onto his, you can practically feel your worries melt away, dripping down your body and into the water surrounding you, touching you, yet not absorbing into your skin. You feel complete, and so does he.

Simon’s heart aches when the delicate skin of your lips touches, almost like you’re covering an open wound of his that has blood gushing out of it, keeping him alive and secure. He needs you so, so badly. 

His wet hands travel up your back, gripping the soft skin of your shoulders to ensure you never let go. 

You share soft, innocent kisses, yet they’re desperate and hot, showing how much you yearn for each other. 

It’s nearly impossible to touch Simon's heart, to send shockwaves of heat and adoration through his body - yet you’ve managed to do exactly that, to the point where he finds himself kissing you while clothed in your shared pool.

“You seem tense.” He says, wrapping his arm around your shoulder, allowing you to rest your head on his chest. He knows you too well. 

“I’ve just had a lot on my mind lately. But I’ll be okay. I promise.” You close your eyes, the soothing feeling of his body against yours washing all your worries away like a downpour. “You can talk to me, bonnie.” His tone is extremely matter-of-factly, almost uncharacteristically so, making your eyes open to glare at him, punching his pecks playfully as you snicker. “Of course, I know I can. I just prefer to dwell on my sadness sometimes. You know, typical angst.” “Dark.” “I know.”

“But remember, I’m here for you when you need me.” He caresses your arm as you rest against him once more. “I know. And I appreciate it.” 

“I wanna swim.” You turn to the water, your hand reaching into it to let it glide between your fingers. It’s cold. “Let’s get in then, aye?” John hops into the pool, not bothering to change his everyday clothes, making your eyes widen. You try to get up when you realize what he’s doing, but you can’t. His strong grip on your waist is making it impossible. You’re both laughing like children, with you struggling against his grip and him carrying you into the water. “Ain’t this what you wanted, bonnie?” “Johnny!” 

When you’re finally in the water, you hug him close to you, trying to generate heat between you. You press your cheek against his cheek, shivering while chuckling. Meanwhile, John’s having the time of his life. He’s laughing smugly, holding you up by the back of your thighs as he allows you to snuggle into him. 

“I think I know how to warm you up.” “Well, how about you tell me then?” You jolt slightly at the chill running down your spine, hugging him even harder. 

His hand reaches the back of your head, pressing your lips against his, making you yelp in surprise. 

When your smiles connect, your teeth clank slightly, making you both snort before you continue sharing sloppy, clumsy kisses. 

It’s almost as if the cold, wintry water instantly turns into a hot spring, all of your skin from the top of your head to the tip of your toes thawing up. 

He breaks the kiss sooner than you both want, staring into your eyes as his hand slides down your back again. “I was right, wasn’t I?” “Just kiss me again.”

When he hears your faint voice in the distance, he speedwalks outside, sitting beside you unquestioningly and dangling his legs into the water. “What’s up?” You ask, grabbing his thigh playfully. “Tch.” He smirks, matching your energy. He returns the grab, running his hand up and down the fabric of your clothes on your leg. “I’ve been looking for you.” “I know. What’s up?” “I’ve just been missin’ you.” “I’ve missed you too, pretty boy.”

He kisses you softly, making his heart flutter, like he didn’t just run around looking for you. (Just picture him jogging around your house like: “Babe?” “Babe??” “Baby?” Ugh, the cutest ☹️)

When he pulls away, you two are giggling and looking at each other, still caressing one another with hearts for eyes. “You should’ve told me you’re out here.” He boops your nose, making you chuckle even more. “I just thought I’d come and sit here for a little. The water is weirdly relaxing.” “It’s cold.” 

“We don’t nearly use this pool enough,” Kyle continues, his linen shorts not touching the water yet. It’s as if he’s eager to jump in and hesitant simultaneously. “Wanna get in?” You suggest, making his gaze turn to you once again. “Let’s not even change. Let’s just get in.” You smirk, making him giggle. “It’s cold as shit, babe.” “So?” 

That one word makes him return the smirk - he could never say no to you. 

He gets in the pool, only to turn around immediately, picking you up by your waist and lowering you into the frigid water. Your giggles are cut short by a shiver, hugging him close to you to feel less frostbitten. He chuckles, his hand coming up to the back of your head, holding you so you warm up. He hates seeing you uncomfortable, but your shuddering in his arms heats his heart. He wants to protect, love, and care for you - you’re so precious to him. “Told you.” “Shut up, Kyle.”

You wiggle in his grip, trying to create friction between you to stay heated. “I hate to admit it, but it is colder than I thought…” “I’m doing pretty okay, actually.” “Okay, no one asked.” 

You laugh brightly, hugging each other as if your lives depend on it. Kyle looks you in your eyes, his gaze darting to your lips. “Can I kiss you?” He asks tamely, not wanting to overstep any boundaries of yours. He has made it into a habit to ask. “Yeah… of course, you can.”

With that, his lips are all over yours, kissing you sweetly as you shiver from the coldness of the Adam’s Ale. His touch is dove-like, as gentle as it can be, showing you how much he cares about you, despite his teasing.  “Still cold?” “Just… be quiet.” 

In truth, Kyle is colder than you are. His hands tremble from the chill of the water that hugs you both, but he pretends to be sweltering just so he can take care of you and your needs - your chilly body. 

The worst part is that it’s working. You have no clue how utterly icy Kyle feels - but he doesn’t mind. As long as his remaining heat transports to your body, he’s content.

“Been lookin’ for you.” You look up at him for a second when the soundwaves of his voice reach your ears, giving him a tiny grin. “Hi.” You simply say. He’s standing behind you, taking a drag of his cigar. “You’ve been off lately.” He confronts, not wasting a second to get to the bottom of your worries. 

You look back at the pool, blinking. “Hey, talk to me.” He sits down next to you, dipping his feet into the water. “What’s wrong, doll?” 

“Nothing’s wrong, John.” You look at the man next to you, the man you’ve oathed to never lie to, the man you love the most. There’s no convincing him that you’re okay - he knows you inside and out. “Is there a reason you’re lying to me?” He quickly calls you out, erupting a small chuckle from you. “You’re not gonna let this go, are you?” “Never.” 

“I don’t know. I’d rather not talk about it.” You sigh, kicking your feet in the pool. “Sweetheart, whatever it is, you shouldn’t carry this on your own.” He persists. He wants to respect your boundaries, but when he sees how much this has affected you, he can’t. He needs to help you. “I promise, John. I’m fine.” “You’re not.” 

“Fine.” You say after a couple of seconds of excruciating silence. “I’ve been feeling down. My stress has been getting to me. I’m trying to find a way to calm down, but I feel helpless. Nothing is working.” You vent, resting your head on his shoulder. “Sweetheart…” He caresses your hair, letting you melt into him. “Thank you for telling me.” He starts, readying himself to give you some words of wisdom, but you cut him off, foreshadowing him spewing his advice. “And as much as I appreciate your advice, I don’t want it.” You relax into him. “I see.” 

Your attention turns to the water before you. “I think I’m going for a swim.” “I’m swimming with you.” John almost instantly says, making you sit up straight and stare at him with a small smile. “Really?” “Really.” “You never swim with me.” “I don’t care. I’m not leaving you alone when you’re clearly in need of comfort.” He puts his cigar out on the ground, throwing it off to the side. 

You blush instantaneously. “Alright, I’ll change quickly.” You start standing up, but John holds you firmly in place. “No need.” He smiles at you, hopping into the pool with his clothes on. He turns to you, holding his arms out for you to grab onto. “Hop in, doll.” “I don’t know, John…” “Oh, come on, don’t be silly.” He chuckles, grabbing your waist gently, giving you a questioning look, almost telepathically asking if you’re okay with this. You giggle, easing into his arms. “Fine.”

When you give him the green light, he wastes no time. He picks you up, lowering you into the pool and hoisting you in his arms. 

“You okay, sweetheart?” He asks, feeling your legs wrap around his waist. “I’m okay… it’s a little cold, though.” “Let’s get you warmed up, then.” 

He quickly brings his lips to yours, capturing them in a comforting kiss, holding you to ensure you don’t let go of him. Your worries are slowly fading, the memory of them in your brain clouding. You cup his cheeks hesitantly, letting yourself get loose. He knows you too well - this is just what you need. 

Your heart feels full, and you feel content. You know that John also feels satisfied. He’s happy knowing that he can be of comfort to you. You’re so special to him - how can’t he be joyful knowing you feel safe with him?

You continue kissing passionately yet smoothly. It’s not rushed, taking your time with each other, allowing you to let one another into your embrace. Even though you’ve been with John for a while, you’re still cautious with each other, showing you how much you care about one and all. 

You’ve never felt more stress-free. You’ve got John holding you, kissing you lovingly as he hugs you, his strong arms pushing you against him. The content of the pool makes you feel weightless, mimicking the zero-gravity properties of space. What more could you ask for?

“Mi vida, food’s ready. Are you coming?” He asks, bending down till he’s at eye-level with you. “Yeah… just give me a second. I’ll be right there.” You smile at him, caressing his cheek. He can sense a tinge of sadness behind your smile, making him frown. “Are you okay?” “Yeah… yeah, I’m fine.” “You’re lying.” 

He immediately sits down and wraps his arms around you, dipping his feet into the water. “What’s wrong, cariño?” He kisses your temple, making you melt. 

“I’ve just been feeling so overwhelmed… and I don’t want to put that burden on you since you work so hard and have problems of your own.” 

Alejandro feels his heart burst. He had no clue you feel this horrible. “Mi vida… your feelings are not a burden.” He hugs you tightly, kissing your forehead sweetly. “Look at me.” He says, grabbing your chin and making you look up at him. “You’re so important to me, corazón. You should’ve talked to me.” His eyes lock with yours. Trying to look away is out of the question - he’s got you in a trance with his gaze. “I know I should’ve. I’m sorry.” “Don’t be sorry. Let’s get you cheered up instead, yeah? Are you hungry?” He smiles, rubbing your chin with his thumb. You get an idea.

“Can you get in with me?” You shoot the pool a glance and then look back at Alejandro with a devious smile painted across your face. “That would make me happy.” 

His eyes widen before his smile matches yours. You’re so unpredictable at times. He loves that about you. “Of course, I’ll get in with you, cariño.” He chuckles, tucking a hair behind your ear. “There’s that smile I love so much. Come on, amor, I’ll carry you in.” He gets in, catching you by surprise. You didn’t expect him to get in fully clothed - but it makes you the happiest you’ve been in a while. 

He gently grabs you by your waist, pulling you close to him so the feeling of the water around you is less intense. You’re feeling overwhelmed, after all - you don’t need any more unnecessary discomfort. 

“Feeling okay?” He asks, kissing you softly on your lips and caressing your back gently. “Yeah. I feel great. Thank you.” “Of course, mi vida. You know you can always talk to me. Your struggles are my struggles. Your triumphs are my triumphs.” His hand finds the back of your head, pulling you in close. “I’ve got you.” He whispers before kissing you again, taking in your scent and touch. He feels so alive.

So, what does he say then? What's the Crowley version of "peckish"? It's a homophone and it's...

To be "bored/board" (in Ineffable Husbands Speak). The Crowley version of "peckish", which is a word that is fine for Aziraphale but which Crowley is never going to use in all his days.

To be bored is to lament the fact that you are lacking in stimuli and activity and to be stuck in a temporary dearth of anything interesting happening. A homophone for "bored" in English is "board", which has several different meanings that are amusing in an Ineffable Husbands-y way-- much like "wily", "thwart", "smitten", "explode", etc..

A board in one bit of common usage today is a plank of wood-- as in, "honey, I'm going to Lowe's to grab some more boards for our home improvement project" but, inevitably, since you're all such wonderfully dirty-minded little skamps, your minds also went to the sexual euphemism for having an erection. As such, Crowley can speak aloud one sound-- like Aziraphale did with "tante"/"tente"-- and have it mean two different words at once and "board" has additional meanings that meet the criteria for being a word in Ineffable Husbands Speak... like its food-related one.

One of the original meanings of "board" is a table that is set for a meal. As in, "he was ravenously hungry when he returned to the house and sighed with pleasure at the board before him." The board, in this case, would be a table laid with food that was ready to eat. A more modern version of this kind of usage is less the whole table set up for a meal but more if I were to go fill a plank of wood or a stone slab or a platter with various deli meats, cheeses, olives, breads/crackers, etc., what have I made? A charcuterie board.

Additionally, a "board" can be used to mean those working as a small collective to make decisions and direct an organization-- as in, "she sits on the board of directors of the company"-- and is then a nod towards their healthy sexual power balance. More euphemistically, as a verb, you "board" modes of transportation-- like planes, buses, trains, ships... the latter two of which we've already seen Crowley and Aziraphale turn into sexual innuendo.

Ships are related to the sea and feature into Aziraphale's drunk innuendo around The Kraken and his more detailed Biblically-inspired dirty talk in the "seeds of destruction" scene. Trains are what Crowley parries back with after Aziraphale turned The Bentley and the bookshop into a sexual metaphor for Crowley and himself when teasing control freak Crowley about how he has been letting Aziraphale drive his car for centuries but is having a whole meltdown about letting him drive the actual, literal car.

While you "sail on" a ship and "fly" on a plane, in the cases of most other forms of transportation-- including the two Crowley and Aziraphale are flirting about in S2, cars and trains-- you, of course, "board" one to ride it to a destination. If you wish to board a mode of transportation, you wish to go somewhere-- you're bored and need to board. And you've a whole board of delicious-sounding meal options circling around in your mind lol.

So, Crowley can make one sound and it encapsulates two words with collective meanings of lacking in stimuli while being hard up/horny and fantasizing about a whole damn charcuterie board of sexual options.

Crowley can tell what Aziraphale means by his tone of voice and the reasons Aziraphale calls Crowley, according to Crowley in 2.01, are that there's a "something's wrong" emergency (which is what this scene in 2.01 is), that he has to tell him about something clever he did and can't wait the short amount of time until he sees Crowley next to tell him (which is so married and is also what happens when Aziraphale can't wait to tell Crowley how good a job he's doing managing his trauma in Edinburgh by having gone to the spot by the Gabriel statue), or that he's "bored"/"board"-- he's restless, lacking in stimuli, very peckish and wants to mess around (which is Good Omens: Lockdown).

Your positivity and kindness hooked the man in faster than he could even blink - we all know exactly how loyal he is and how quickly he can tell who deserves that loyalty. It only took him a few minutes to read that you’re one of those people.

He’s also pretty intrigued by how much you know. He likes to exchange little bits of knowledge and stories with you, especially after he’s done some travelling and has a wider expanse of knowledge. Even before that, though, he always keeps your words in mind - who knows, one day one of those facts might just save a life!

He also very well understands the difficulties of insecurity and hotheadedness, having faced them himself. He does his best to keep you grounded, and encourages you to leave your comfort zone now and then - it’s key to growth, after all - but he knows when to back off. He can be a little stubborn, especially if he’s enthusiastic, but in the end your comfort matters more. If you’d rather stay at home with him than go out and dance or something, that’s fine by him. Hell, with all the travelling he does, he may actually grow to prefer that more relaxed atmosphere.

On that topic, Speedwagon’s pretty good at reading people’s moods and actions. On top of knowing when he needs to let you chill, he also knows if/when he should make somebody else do the same. If he sees something or someone bothering you, he’s quick to swoop in and do whatever he can to settle the situation, whether that’s just to comfort some insecurities or get a particularly annoying person to back off. If he knows that you can handle it, though, he’ll take a backseat and play cheerleader. In fact, it makes him proud to see it.

Also, this man grew up on the most dangerous street in London. He’s no stranger to meals with some odd ingredients, and frankly, he’ll be even happier to learn how good they taste! He’s not the best cook himself, he’s the type of man who uses whatever he has on hand to try scraping together something reasonable, so a good meal will go straight to his heart.

For the sake of anime and manga, I’m gonna go ahead and pretend we’re a little more modern day for the next few. I feel like Speedwagon is more of a reading guy than a television guy. After a long day, he’ll to sit down and read with you, manga or not. He’ll watch a show too if you ask, but there’s something quite romantic about cuddling up and sharing a book that he feels can’t be matched by much else.

On that note, please forgive him ahead of time - if you do get him to sit down and watch your favourite shows, he will have a lot of commentary. He’s the type of guy who will interrupt a scene to enthusiastically declare something like, “So THAT’S why the bugger carries that chain around!”, or confoundedly question what a character thinks they’re doing. He’ll probably do this while reading too, just maybe not as often. He’s not trying to interrupt, he just gets excited - if you tell him to settle down, he’ll do his best to accommodate, but he might slip from time to time.

Also, (and this is another one of those modern day ones) depending on your music taste, he may or may not buy vinyls or discs of your favourite bands and try to get you to dance with him to them. He’ll probably suggest a concert at least once - something tells me that he’s the type to prefer live music.

Knowing that you’re passionate about something makes him passionate, too. He’ll try his best to look into your interests on his own time, and try to involve you in whatever he finds - maybe he asks an older lady he knows for interesting recipes to show you, or he scours a book store for a series he hasn’t heard you talk about yet. He’s doing his best to match your love for these things, even if they’re sometimes new to him.

Your bright outlook on life, your compassion, your love for the things you enjoy - they’re all astoundingly inspirational to this man. He may sometimes worry that you deserve better than an Ogre Street ex-thief, but by god, will he use all the motivation you give him to make a good life for you.

Personality: I personally don't know what my mbti is, so I'll just give a short description of my personality. Secretly, he is a little scared that he is too overbearing when teaching you things. Overall, he would value similar things to you in a relationship. He is an honest man who communicates well, if not sometimes too bluntly, but he would do his best to always respect you. If someone else is to disrespect you, however, all hell breaks loose. Jouno and the Huntings Dogs will obviously get lighter punishments, though, and I don't expect them to cross any lines. He would, without a doubt, try to keep you as far away from his occupation as possible. Your safety is his priority, and he could not live with himself knowing that he was the reason why you were targeted by a criminal group. He gets anxious about how you are doing, so he will send a variety of texts about how you are doing throughout the day. It's a little heartwarming knowing that you're always on his mind. Because of his constant worrying about your safety, he absolutely loves to hold you in his arms so he knows that nobody can hurt you. Sometimes, though, he just wants you to hold him instead because he is always dealing with things for other people and he just wants someone to do the same for him.

That's an interesting question, and I welcome other people weighing in on that! I think I have definitely seen fics float by that have implied background qphil/qwilbur, and I don't recall the authors getting hate in their notes. Your milage may vary, but I've seen people do it and be fine. Note that these were e-rated fics however so people were already a bit more ready to be freaky, you might find more pushback if you're writing something teen-rated?

But the familial relationship on QSMP is much less firmly defined than it was on DSMP, and frankly a fair bit of the sandduo interactions are kind of uncomfortable to interpret as being between a father son duo, so when it comes to things people are doing with ships, saying "actually they're not related and wilbur's extended sexual discussions with someone he wants to approve of him are /sex" is not the craziest ship out there.

If you were doing main focus philbur I would say be prepped for hate comments or people telling you to add warning tags— I did once see someone with a "they're not related" tag with someone in their notes arguing with them that they should tag it for incest or pseudo-incest, even though best as I could tell that wasn't a feature of the work at all, it was an au where they were like, unrelated coworkers. But just as a background ship, honestly most people are not reading that closely.

My general guess would be that you'd be fine if it was e-rated, you're not gonna get more blowback than you would for smut for any other english-speaking streamer. It's a bit more dicey if you're wandering into the wilds of the t-rated and m-rated fics.

I would recommend starting out in the Anon collection if you're unsure, I have literally done the research and people will still happily read anon fics. It just won't be traceable back to you if someone decides they hate the author of this HORRIBLE fic where the cubitos do (less than they've done on screen in sorry boy videos now).

He has a clicky jaw from where he nearly got his face blown off at Gallipoli, limps a little when it's cold, or he's depressed from where he got shot in the thigh, also at Gallipoli but Lone Pine. Both were exacerbated by not letting it heal properly before he got back to work. The scar faded but he got hosed by a flame thrower and then plane fuel during a plane crash in 1941 and his right shoulder is still a bit stiff. He will roll it a lot when he's anxious.

As for mental... It's not exactly a disability in the bio-medical sense but he was just not built for 19th century life. He's one of those kids that in the modern day everyone would be pushing to be on Ritalin but the second he's in a comfortable, safe, stable environment all the behaviour problems disappear. In the 19th century though my boy was just struggling.

💛 YELLOW HEART — how many languages does your oc speak? what language(s) are they learning, if any?

I need to do more on this. I've directly referenced Dharug, English, Irish, and Te Reo. His French and German are shit and always will be. 404: languages with a built in hierarchy not found. He was pretty content just to absorb languages as they became relevant but he put a LOT of effort into Greek and a very specific type of Italian when he got the pitter-patters for Romano and Herakles in the early 20th century. I'm not sure where the fluency chart would put him but he's got knowledge of Arabic, Mandarin, Indonesian, Balinese and Japanese now. He'll kind of complain about learning another one and a bit about having to use it but then he's a fucken peacock about on the off chance a conversation doesn't happen in the world's dominant global language 😂.

OKAY so going back over I found the guides I like for Old English pronunciations because I'm not good at it and can never remember how to pronounce things. So on the poll I was gushing in tags about where the word orange came from. In Old English we just used yellow-red or red-yellow, or technically the word was "geoluread." In today's English there's a few ways it could be read. "Geo" would likely use a "j" soundish like "geology." "Lu" and "luh" are fairly similar in modern and old English so just "uh" like "put." "Read" could be "red" or "reed."

SO I'm probably butchering how I say things (like I said still practicing) and explaining but this ramble is for fun so 'tis fine. I think the "eo" would be considered a front vowel so the "g" is said similarly to our "y" sound is "yes." "Eo" is better explained by this specific area of the website I'm on right now (lots I'll just between but this one has examples) as "like the 'e' in bed gliding to the 'o' in 'cough'" so "eh-aw" almost? Or the "aw" and "ough" in "awesome" and "cough" are identical in my accent (Texan accents do that fairly often.) Then of course the "luh" sound, and then "ea" is described as "ai" in fail. I saw fail differently from the speaker but from other descriptions and guides it seems similar to "ey-ah." Not exactly but I suck st describing things.

Y'all. "Geoluread" put together ("g" "eo" "lu" "read"). The best I can visualize it is "yeh-oh" "luh" "rey-ahd"

When we say yellow or at least the way I've grown up talking there's the slightest hint of an "o" between "eh" and "l." Just from how your move your mouth (same reason what did you becomes didja and what you becomes whatcha." Voicing the "o" in "eol" snf NOT voicing it has your mouth move almost the exact same way.

Geoluread is spelled so strangely to me but it's LITERALLY JUST YELLOW RED. IT'S THE SAME THING AS IT WAS IN THE 11TH CENTURY LMAO

And this also is cool to me (I am bored in class with nothing to do have been typing for well over ten minutes about a fruit word) is English has evolved a LOT but spelling and lexicon seem to have changed a lot more than pronunciation from Old English. This word is hard for me to pronounce because (and true for a lot of Old English words) the vowels have you holding your tongue a lot further back than speaking Modern English. That's a fun quirk I like about today's English—compared to a lot of similar languages (I.e. Spanish and French I believe? Been a bit since I've looked into this) we have a tongues naturally resting a lot higher (on roof of mouth vs bottom). And Modern English seems to pronounce sounds with the tongue closer to or touching the teeth than Old English does. I know of the Great Vowel Shift so I'm wondering if that whole 15-16th century language drama was the cause? I have done research on it but I don't have IPA Symbols memorized yet so it's hard to tell what the shift was responsible for and what is just the passage of time changing things.

So this is what I do if I get bored enough at school apparently. Lose my mind over pronunciations of words centuries ago because I saw one (1) poll about whether orange the color or orange the fruit came first (it was the fruit. Wasn't until Margaret Tudor around a century later I think that it was recorded to describe a color.)

Shows:

I am currently watching El Ministerio del Tiempo (The Ministry of Time), it's a great show to not only learn about the language but also about the history of Spain as the show is about these time travelers trying to mantain history untouched, it's pretty neat! I've done some googling and it used to be on Netflix, but I don't think it is anymore. I've seen there's some English subtitles you can download, but I don't know how you can integrate that into the original video. Here is a post about someone using like a plugin to see the subs directly through the RTVE Play page (where it's still available) so maybe try there.

I just spent fifteen minutes looking for Spanish shows that have easy access to English subtitles but I haven't found any (at least of the ones I like), so I think they might be a bit tricky to find; I'll recommend them to you nevertheless in case you manage to get a hold on them.

The quintessential Spanish TV shows are imo Los Serrano (The Serrano Family) and Aquí No Hay Quién Viva (Nobody Can Live Here); they both have very simple premises and are just lighthearted sitcoms (Los Serrano is more narrative while Aquí No Hay Quién Viva is more similar to The Office). The latter is probably the most iconic one of the two, it is quoted daily and it is really good, while the former just exemplifies the 00s in Spain (keep in mind the shows are form the 00s so some of the plots might have not aged so well).

Paquita Salas is a modern classic, this one is definitely inspired by shows like The Office and it's also incredibly iconic, memeable and quotable. Anyways, it's about this washed up talent manager and her agency, and it has tons of cameos from famous Spanish people, it's very fun. It is on Netflix but I do not know if it has English subs (I think it does tho. Maybe? There's a possibility that's for sure). Also the seasons are like 6 episodes each so it's very easy to watch.

Skam España :) It had to be here :) And I know it has English subs cause I helped translating it lol. It's basically the Spanish remake of Skam, it's very good and I really recommend it. From season 2 onwards you can watch it completely in Youtube (just search for skam españa season x in the search box and you should be fine), or you can go to the best place in the universe, where you can find all episodes in true skam fashion :)

I am kinda embarrassed cause I haven't watched many Spanish shows so I cannot really speak for myself, but here goes a list of shows that I've heard are pretty good and where you can find them (maybe subbed!): Las Chicas del Cable (Netflix), Sky Rojo (Netflix), Merlí (Amazon Prime), Vis a Vis (Netflix), Veneno (Netflix), and El Internado (Netflix).

Movies:

I have watched even less Spanish movies so yeah. But I can still recommend some let's see

La Llamada (The Call, in English is called Holy Camp! for some reason) is the only Spanish musical I respect, I've seen both the movie and the original musical and I love them both so much, the movie is great (with the original actors of the stage production) and yeah I couldn't recommend it enought. It basically is about these teen girls who are at bible camp and one of them starts dreaming about God. It sounds boring now that I think about it but it's not I can assure you. It isn't really religious either don't worry. It used to be on Netflix but I don't think it is there still, I'm sorry :(

This one's a bit controversial but I'm putting it here cause it really shows the contrast between different regions in Spain; Ocho Apellidos Vascos (Eight Basque Surnames, once again, the English name for this movie is Spanish Affair for some reason???). Anyways, this one was a revolution when it came out, I don't know how many times I watched it in the span of like 2 months, it was a lot. The actors are all great, the story is pretty solid and it's generally funny I think (albeit maybe perpetuating certain stereotypes). It is a very simple premise; guy meets girl, guy falls in love with said girl and follows her from Sevilla to Euskadi. On Google it says it's on Netflix, Amazon Prime and HBO so... yeah.

The most beloved Spanish filmmaker is Pedro Almodóvar, and his movies are classics (that I have yet to see). Mujeres al Borde de un Ataque de Nervios (Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown) and Volver (Return) are probably his best works, and I really recommend them! They are both available on Netflix :)

Last week I watched another really famous Spanish movie from a director who passed away earlier this month, ¡Ay Carmela!, a movie about this troupe of itinerant artists during the Civil War that really shows how both sides of the war were. It's on HBO Max.

As with shows, here are some rapid-fire Spanish movies I've heard are pretty good: Los Santos Inocentes (Amazon Prime), Bienvenido, Mister Marshall (HBO Max), El Laberinto del Fauno (HBO Max and Disney Plus), Celda 211 (Netflix and HBO Max), La Lengua de las Mariposas (Amazon Prime), Mar Adentro (HBO Max), and Amanece Que No es Poco (HBO Max and Amazon Prime). I have actually watched the three last ones lol, I just didn't remember them.

Thinking about “We all remember what it was like.” They all remember, even Nicky and Joe who came into immortality together. After almost a thousand years, Nicky still remembers the confusion and fear and alienation, enough that it makes finding this new immortal their most urgent task.

My favorite fic treatments of their first deaths really lean into this. Not just surprise or awe, but horror. Going a little bit out of their minds, begging to die and stay dead, because that’s what humans do, that’s how the world is supposed to work. I feel it viscerally, imagining the terror of finding yourself so profoundly apart from everything you’ve ever known to be true.

And the only other person who’s in it with you is the enemy you were trying to kill. This is the real impediment to replicating their dynamic in an AU. Anyone can run the enemies-to-lovers course. But enemies to “I still hate you and I don’t understand you but you are the only solid ground in this terrifying new reality and I think if we don’t hold onto each other we’ll lose everything” to lovers is pretty hard to capture in any other setting.

You are reading fanfic. The source property is set in the present day. The fic, maybe because it’s an AU or the canon just works that way, is set in a noticeably different historical period. Which of these answers most accurately reflects your feelings? (choose all that apply)

A. I like it when the writing style (both dialogue and narration) is period-appropriate, or at least a general approximation thereof.

B. I like the dialogue to be period-appropriate, but it’s fine (or even preferred) for the narration to feel more modern.

C. I don’t care either way, as long as there aren’t glaring anachronisms.

D. I prefer that both the dialogue and narration are similar to what I’m used to reading and seeing. So not modern slang or anything like that, but I don’t want it to be jarringly different.

The violence at the end of the episode was upsetting, but I tell you, what has stuck with me in the days since I watched it was "Which one of you gonna fuck me?!" It haunts me. Deeply shocking, viscerally repulsive, absolutely heartbreaking... and just the tiniest bit funny. It's like a gut punch every time I think about it.

I think a very young Claudia is much better suited to a written format. A five or six year old actor can't give the kind of performance that's required... and some things just wouldn't be right to do with a child actor of any age. But a 19-year-old playing a character who's physically 14 opens up so many tragic, horrifying possibilities.

And Bailey Bass is so good. I can't get her face out of my head. "And after forty years... still little boys?" God, there's just so much going on. And you feel all of it.

My #1 post of 2022

The tough thing about boundaries is that it’s not enough to state them, you have to enforce them.

I think some folks see “setting boundaries” as a kind of magic talisman to influence other people’s behavior. “I’ll tell you what I need or can’t accept, and you will act accordingly.” And sometimes that’s what happens, and that’s great! But if the other person disregards your stated boundaries, it doesn’t mean setting boundaries didn’t work.

Because boundaries aren’t about others’ behavior, they’re about your own. If the other person’s behavior doesn’t change, then yours has to. “Please don’t discuss [x topic] with me” is a request. “If you continue to talk about [x topic] then I will end this conversation/hang up/leave” is a boundary, which you must then enact. The point is less about stopping the other person (although that’s ideal) and more about protecting yourself. And you have to be committed to protecting yourself, because no one else will be.

You have to be so committed that you’re willing to tolerate other people being hurt or angry or uncomfortable. You have to accept that some relationships might change. You have to hold onto the idea that it’s all right for them to change, because the way they were before was hurting you, and you deserve to not be hurt. You gave them a choice: maintain a relationship or keep doing the thing that hurts you, and they chose to keep hurting you, so if the situation is now awkward or unpleasant that was because of their choice. Enforcing boundaries means deciding that if someone is going to feel bad here, it need not be always and only you.

There is no magic formula that will make other people treat you kindly and respectfully. But you can learn to treat yourself with kindness and respect. That’s what enforcing a boundary is.

I'm actually. Really hype about reading dmbj novels (besides the obvious of enjoying the story!)

The first novel I read intensively using Readibu, looking up every unknown word. It was a 3 week read I did during down time so not bad reading pace at all.

Second novel, I started with listening to TTS while reading along. So no word lookup. That went okay. Now I'm alternating between that, reading silently with no word lookup, and reading with about 5-10 word lookups a chapter. The lookups are useful for new boat/diving words in this novel, and the TTS is good for reinforcing new pronunciations.

All TTS with extensive reading I've done lately (I did with another 33 chapter story) have helped a lot with my inner reading mental voice. Now I can read aloud To Myself if I want to, I have a better mental sound for a lot of newly learned words and words I've known how to read but didn't practice listening to as much until now.

The reading of dmbj how I am now, I'm finding very helpful. Like I said, a lot of it is extensive reading with maybe 5-10 word lookups some chapters. This is working as a good method for me right now. Dmbj is written very "guy writing a journal" as it's name implies. And so there's moments in the descriptions (like the bartering scenes, the action scenes) where I feel like sentences require me to simply read the entire thing and grasp the impression, in order to get what's happening. If I look up every word, I might still not get the sentence. I just sort of have to take it for its Whole Full Context and decide. It's not that the grammar is confusing, I'd say it's maybe more How the words are used if anything. But my guess is maybe it's just written more informally/like someone speaking. And I'm used to priest and writers who write much more descriptive prose style. So this dmbj way of writing is really good practice to get used to reading and understanding, and it's also nice cause it FORCES me to learn some words from context. Because some of these words are not literally dictionary-definition-to-word being used that way by npss. So I have to just get used to it, and as I get used to it with words I have definitions already for, it also makes it feel less scary to do it with words I have no meaning at all for.

Somewhat related, I should read wuxia eventually too. I noticed when checking out Condor Heroes that its written in a particular style that I can Tell priest slightly emulates in tian ya ke. It's this style of shortening sentences/descriptions to 4 characters or just less characters generally, but not necessarily into clear 4-hanzi idioms or onomotopiea. Instead its just this way of writing curtly with still the dense meaning of a longer sentence, if that makes sense? It's similar to how in Word of Honor (and many) cdrama theme songs, 4 hanzi translated to English are a longer equivalent song lyric. Its like there's just a preference for more descriptions per paragraph where there's more 1 hanzi dense meaning words used rather than more 2-hanzi and 4-hanzi words. (I'm probably describing this attrociously qnd if you know more chinese than me I apologize for this trainwreck of me trying to describe wtf I'm trying to ;-; ). Just like... in comparison to modern stuff that's just Idiom (4 hanzi) heavy, which I either struggle to read (huanxi gongzi is one of the hardest writers for me cause of this) or handle fine (priest tends toward visually easy to picture Idiom usage so it rarely makes it hard for me, as does the xiao mao riji author). Instead it's like... just more 1 hanzi descriptors. Idk I am probably describing wrong. But I definitely notice an increase in style differences when I find stylized xianxia (cang lan jue does it a bit, which is noticeable, but not very much which makes it an easier xianxia novel to adapt to) and I find wuxia novels do it a Lot Lot (gu longs novels don't do it as densely as Condor Heroes does). Anyway messy confusing probably wrong description aside: I should eventually practice reading that writing style i see in some wuxia since i find it more difficult to understand.

Back to dmbj. I am really excited. Both because dmbj novels are getting easier to understand over time, and because as last month proved... the more I practice reading even stuff I find Easier, the more harder stuff drops in difficulty when I go back to it. So I am hype!!!

Also I've mentioned this before, but I think dmbj is very well suited to learning new vocabulary. Reasons being: 1. Npss doesn't have a super broad vocabulary he uses so it's mostly nouns and adjectives, which are very overall useful words to learn and once you learn them they're most of the words you'll run into in his stories. 2. The particular action story arcs npss seems to write go to one location, start using the new words of that location and then stay there for a few chapters so you can learn the words then Practice Recognizing them long enough to learn them instead of just forgetting them, and then he'll move onto the next location and it's new noun/verb words. It's got a steady stream of new words but sort of paced so you only run into a certain amount of unknown words for a while and get to repeatedly practice them, and only later get hit with a new amount of unknown words. I find this structure to be really good for learning new words if you're using reading to learn vocabulary and don't have any SRS/flashcards you review with, since this structure helps provide natural review. This structure is similarly found in a lot of stories structured by cases - new words will be brought up related to the case location/victims job etc then the plot will keep using mostly only those new words, until a new case happens and then new setting/victim specific words get introduced. So those kinds of structures I like using to learn vocab as it keeps me learning new things while knowing I'll get review so it won't feel like a slog of unknowns with no review or recognition improvement.

Warning: this is gonna be petty as all hell, but I'm going to have to say Sparity for one big reason--my first ex shipped it hard. He wrote Sparity fics and everything, and got fairly big in the fandom for doing so. Now, I was always a little uncomfy with Sparity due to the age gap, but was fine with it just being a cute little crush, but after we broke up, I suddenly found myself losing any love I might've had for it. I still think Spike and Rarity are very cute as friends, especially as Rarity grows to view Spike as an equal rather than just as her other friend's kid brother, but fan content of them anything other than that is an instant turn-off for me.

On a much shorter note, I've also never liked Spike and Sweetie Belle together (even when I did tolerate Sparity) for a much different, yet similar reason. Sweetie Belle is her own filly and deserves to be evaluated on her own merits, and I feel like that would be just about impossible when your BF spent a good chunk of his childhood crushing on your older sister. Obviously, Spike wouldn't mean to do that, but I feel like it'd be almost impossible to not have these types of insecurities in a situation like this, because intrusive thoughts are assholes. Plus it just reminds me of that whole thing in Great Expectations when the losing childhood friend in the love triangle gets together with the dude's brother-in-law, and as an English major, I'd really prefer not to remember that Charles Fucking Dickens wrote that kind of end-of-romance-novel plot twist crap.

in short my headcanon is that spike is a short king, a bisexual king, and that's he's in love with a...well, you get the idea

10) Most disliked arc? Why?

The OG Crystal Empire arc, hands down. While the Pony of Shadows arc also disappointed me a bit for similar reasons as I'm about to go into here, it saved itself from this fate by at least having some pieces of interesting lore, mostly with regards to Stygian. The idea of the one normal guy in a group of legendary magical people turning to dark magic to catch up to their level and having that backfire on him is heartbreaking to me, so I'm able to forgive the rest of the arc's shortcomings as a result.

However, the Crystal Empire arc...didn't really have that much lore going for it. While the show progressed a bit towards it later on, I found myself really not caring about Twilight's test during the two-parter compared to all the lore the episode could have had.

The Crystal Empire itself is a really fascinating concept--imagine a land made entirely of crystal, where even the beings themselves are made of crystal, ruled over by a dark, shadowy king with Sauron vibes. Sounds cool, right? Let's not focus on that and instead focus on the Mane Six setting up a festival! How does Cadence tie into this empire's history? Let's literally never explain that outside of expanded universe stories fans have to go out of their way to read! And nerf Shining Armor again for his second two-parter in a row! All while airing copious amounts of Gak commercials! (God, does anyone still remember that meme?)

And speaking of remembering stuff, does anyone remember that cool-ass thing Legend of Korra did where it cut to the first Avatar for a couple of episodes, allowing us to learn about the ancient stuff in the ancient world before going back and showing the implications it had on the modern world? If the Crystal Empire arc had been like that, if we'd gotten to see how the Empire worked before Twilight's test, the story we got in the S3 premiere would have been so much better as a result. And who knows, maybe that's the direction things could've gone if S3 hadn't been a lower-budget half-season due to Equestria Girls. I like to think there's a universe somewhere where we somehow got Equestria Girls, a full Crystal Empire arc, and at least 3 more Babs-focused episodes in S3, but them's the breaks. Blame Lightning Dust for glitching out and attempting to destroy the VR used to create the AI ponies, causing the programmers/writers to run out of budget for the rest of S3 (yes, this is an actual fanfic plot I wrote).

I never really realized how much of an issue I had with this arc until I sat down to put it into words and now...yeah, taken as its own story without later seasons in mind, it doesn't really have many redeeming qualities to me. At least The Success Song helps pump me up before tests, though!
