4.08 & 4.09 - Echoes | A Man Of His Word

Anna Espinsosa is back and things really seem to be set in motion straight from the start. Eric and Nadia seem to be romancing and enjoying it and most of the ep really focuses on Nadia and Sloane, to each in its own indirect and direct extent and approach and very efficiently so. Sloane is pushed aside given the pressing matters (ex-Covenant, Espinosa, Rambaldi) and this time around it feels natural and beneficial. He either looks worried, saddened or even anticipating or sceptical... who knows at that point since his face can paint dozens of pictures. He seems sincerely worried about his daughter and Nadia does get shot by Anna at the end of the episode. They're together on a mission in Estonia and even though they were sent to observe and not engage in combat, things went awry and Syd went chasing after Anna, for old times sake. This episode also weighs on Vaughn in a great way, since he's trying to keep up some sort of masculine approach that never comes off as intimidating, unfortunately for him, and now facing Sark who might be of great value, being in their custody and all.

They expected Sark to be non-cooperative and he proceeded with his outsmarting them all charade, knowing he would be tracked after being so conveniently freed, leading them all to a middle of nowhere in  a dark, abandoned building in South Africa, no less, with a drink in his hand. All of it, for the bubbly, of course. Guy's been imprisoned for some time so he misses the good booze. He even pissed off Vaughn prior to that whilst being questioned in his cell (all staged by Jack, yes) but still points for his snide remarks regarding Vaughn and Lauren's marriage and letting him know that she loved him. Did she? No one will ever know... But Anna and Sark in the same episode and a true gem of a fight in a lady store between the two, just like the old times since season one, with Syd being almost allergic to Anna and wanting her dead and Anna unable to resist provoking Sydney. "She brings out the worst in me.", Syd even mentioned to Jack when he warned her about imminent loss of temper when the two are involved. Syd even had an alias of a hooker, bad hair, sleazy image and great accent included. There was cutting off of an index finger, great dialogue throughout. A real thrill to watch. Essentially flawed, as I like to write frequently and point out when a 10 is not in order - yes. But I think it's the best of the fourth season thus far. Music and score are kept to a safe minimum, I even heard Sunrise and Making Woopie and even Michael G. (what's his last name?) doesn't mess with the soundtrack way too much and too loud. I don't even think that I've heard the Rambaldi theme being played, which is actually refreshing. Either that or I wasn't paying much attention or it was incorporated into the episode in a cleverly re-mixed, re-collaged way. And this is the first time Rambaldi is taking centre stage in this season.

Nadia hints at those feelings of dread, Rambaldi making her uneasy and a vision she had that was vivid and terrifying. It's still not perfectly displayed how the entire journey she went on with her father played out, but bits and pieces are now starting to get scattered at the right time. Sydney probably wanted to use that moment to tell her about their mother's death's details but was intercepted by a phone call by Anna who by then sat next to Nadia and advised Sydney to cooperate as she's clearly not alone and could notice the red dots of snipers over her chest. Opening credits kick in in such a fitting, unbelievably perfect time that it feels like a true episode from start to finish. In a way, it's like relying on the best and easiest way to get away with ripping off season one episodes (this time around with a risky cliffhanger where Nadia's life is (supposedly) at stake) with everything they set in motion in years between and how to use it and rely on that to create an entertaining episode that is actually a smart catering to the fans at the same time. All of it noticeable, none of it to be dismissed as a negative thing. Maybe the budget cuts or post-production or direction aren't as smashing as one could have hoped for and finding the balance between atmosphere and action takes away some of the edge and that perfect urgency, but this is a well-written episode that really fits well into the season four story arc and feels like it, with all the good points right on spot.

They really kicked it right with this one! One of the unfortunate rarities among exceptionally exemplary episodes of the fourth season of Alias. There's no room for filler, yes. And this means that everything that gets screen time serves its cause flawlessly. Last episode was a really accomplished overture to this one, that is the show after everything got set up properly. Anna is on the loose and has the bomb with her, shot Nadia, who's now in a comatose state (a running gag of sorts for her now, not very unlike Vaughn ending up in a hospital bed), but Anna ceises the opportunity in Vienna to extract Sark from the CIA when he was on a mission with Sydney, her alias being, of all the sheer possibilities, Lauren Reed. Her death is spoken of but not confirmed in criminal underground circles. Sark was brought to the APO headquarters first (great direction/camera work) and now seated opposed to Sloane, is willing to cooperate since as Jack perfectly put it, he sees him as his intellectual match. Sark's got a condition under which he's willing to cooperate. He needs to be certain that Lauren is dead and wishes to visit her grave with Vaughn.

This really triggers the dramatic aspects of the episode in the most sensational way. Sark is brought to a room where bodies of certain risk-bearing level are preserved and "buried". It is very tech-sterile-even-Firefly/Serenity-like, but so worth it. First off, Melissa George really does appear as Lauren's corpse. Gina Torres reprises her role of Anna Espinosa and David Sanders is here once more as Julian Sark. And this is, more or less, Sark's episode. He expresses a desire for closure between the unseemly, twisted, banal love plus sans-love triangle that Lauren/Vaughn/Sark ended up being. Vaughn replies that there is no closure for people like Sark since that would mean that he'd actually have to care about something first. But as Sark looks at Lauren's dead body and looks for wounds, he realises that it was Vaughn who killed her. Then he breaks down and starts crying and demands that Vaughn looks at her. The dialogue in this episode is remarkable. On one hand, the less convincing and kinda silly approach to Sark gaining perspective, changing and being a man of his word (hence the episode title) is made up for with good filming and action. Pace is great. Drama, shots fired, lots of Anna (she appears twice in a public place in order to assassinate someone, even disguising as a nurse at first, ready to kill Nadia).

As if the last episode didn't rejoice the two with fists, kicks, punches and catfight shimmer, Syd and Anna fight once again near the end of the episode as Sark tricks Anna and leaves her hanging in order to - voila! - earn himself his freedom and be on the run and one of the many on the most wanted list once more. The sets are great and the perfect spot was chosen for Syd and Anna to start beating the crap out of each other with Syd finally (for the time being) achieving a closure of her own by overpowering Anna and handcuffing her, arresting her, and hitting her unconscious with a gun slided over to her by Vaughn. The two hug afterwards in such an adorable fashion. They got Anna, they got the dangerous bomb that the ex-Covenant organisation (CRF) was in possession of and they got Sark on the run which will make him useful sooner or later, I guess.

Sloane's story is quite different and so is Jack's - it's handled supremely. Somehow though, Jack comes across as less moral, more cold and arrogant than needed this season and Sydney comes off as a lead character not really leading an actual story of her own, which really becomes evident in a show like this one, since Alias was always based on Sydney Bristow and everything being an extension to her life, her emotions, her problems, ups and downs, her family life and her profession(s) and almost always seen from her perspective or leading back to it. Now it feels like she's blended with the rest, but the character doesn't really come through the same way. Just something I've noticed lately. Anyway, Nadia is in a comatose state, Sloane is genuinely concerned and having a hard time, he's emotional and wants Anna dead, has a crisis of family vs. faith and doesn't take it lightly that Jack put her life at risk in order to obtain crucial information by waking her up from a coma in a very dangerous way. Sloane confronts him about it, and even though it's first-rate handling of dialogue that Alias often excels at, it comes off as Jack being more harsh and Sloane being the one you can sympathise with more. And this is where the episode ends: Jack expressing that it's all the same since Sloane puts Sydney's life at risk every day and Sloane mentioning that his agreement with the CIA also rests on two clauses and one of them covers Sydney being unharmed yet he has no real knowledge that the same can be claimed for his own daughter, Nadia. It comes off as somewhat uncomfortable that Jack's usually dismissable unethical approach hits harder here, as if he doesn't truly validate Nadia and what she means to Sydney. He also quotes Sloane to justify his actions whilst counter-arguing him, which seems rather petty and makes him dislikeable. But the writer and actors pull it off.

Marshall and Jack have a cute uncomfortable moment with Marshall being the sweetheart of the show as always and Jack being confused, unimpressed, disinterested, unenthused, almost expressionless... as always, utterly disconnected and unfamiliar with most of the stuff that Marshall says. Weiss is seen being next to Nadia after she wakes up from the coma and later, just before Syd comes to pay a visit, he is there entertaining her with magic tricks. And I really love Sloane being used in all the right moments and being portrayed this particular way throughout the episode as well as Vaughn really having a hard time, re-visiting the ghosts of his past, seeing Lauren's corpse, interacting with Sark, watching Sydney dressing up as Lauren for her mission, basically hiding his tragedies and the pain of blunt and sharp emotional and psychological blows, all the while, Vartan looking handsome as fuck. Season four Vaughn is one big portion of pretty damn good-looking.

i'm literally sitting here trying to figure out what EVEN i can SAY about aspec rayllum here? i think about them and i want to combust into heart emojis. i watched the first season when it first came out and then only happened to catch up last year with my qpp, and in between i was like. so infuriated when i found out they'd made rayla and callum a thing bc i - naturally - latched onto the green and purple character as an aroace icon at 18 years old, and my partner was like "no no no no TRUST me you've got to watch it, you'll love it"

they weren't wrong and after bingeing the whole show i'm stuck thinking about rayllum a LOT. they're written so much like my own ideal relationship that i kind of want to explode from it sometimes. anyway, my absolute favorite thing about them is how much emphasis there is about their friendship - to the point that when i watched season four, I can't remember which episode specifically it was number wise but when rayla suggested splitting up and offered to go with callum and he turns her down, my first immediate heartbroken thought was "she misses her best friend..." i just love how they're in love but they're in love cos they're best friends....11/10 no notes i need more relationships like that in media

ANYWAY long rambley ask about my loves aside, my question is what are some of your favorite moments where rayllum are so clearly best friends/goofballs in love?

No like honest to god though — me and the Rayla to my Callum are also in a QPR + dash of romance relationship and like... arc 1 and arc 2 Rayllum are just so goddamn sweet??

I don't agree generally that arc 2 Rayllum is more Mature™ than arc 1 rayllum — Callum is more patient and Rayla is more open, so they've matured as individuals — but merely just that they're different flavours of aspec-ness. Like arc 1 is the craziness and rollercoaster of meeting a stranger and realizing they're Your Person, and arc 2 is the deepness after the fact of "I know you, and I know that we can get through everyone so long as we have each other" mostly cause I think the main reason people label arc 1 Rayllum as more immature is because s3 Rayllum gushes over each other, but that's bc people have a hard time conceptualizing having deep admiration for your partner(s) that isn't infatuation... even though like? It's totally normal and welcome, like any long term relationship is "my partner is the most amazing person ever and i'm also very aware of all their flaws simultaneously" and like, arc 1 Rayllum hits that balance perfectly imo

I just love all of their stages and sides to them so so much

But yeah! Some of my fave moments Rayllum wise for the Best Friends quality has to be when they help each other up in 3x05 (Callum after the soulfang chase and Rayla on the ambler) because things are Weird but they're still always going to help each other? The "I missed my best friend" quality in s4 with no one laughing at Callum's jokes / talking about magic with him (vs their first scene in 5x01 being him telling her all about the magic stuff he's reading) and Rayla keeping her disappointment at bay always hits hard and I loove 4x06 when she's beating herself up and he takes care of her because a Good Relationship isn't about how you treat each other when everything's fine, it's 100% about how treat each other when life is hard/stressful and/or you're upset with each other

But I love all the gentle teasing in early S5 and the fist bump lives in my head eternally rent free. The 2x03 hug also means a lot to me cause that was the turning point she went from being a friend to being family and I think in a lot of ways, that's their relationship's most important turning point alongside maybe 1x06 (trusting her anyway!) 4x09 (forgiveness) and 5x04 (her opening up).

5x02 post-inn and stargazing scene are also faves just because of how happy they are talking about Nothing and everything, and like — that's just so fucking real, y'know? When someone makes everything automatically better just by being there

If the spnepisodebracket craze has shown us anything, it's that the supernatural fanbase is extremely divided, with the lowly sam stan seemingly at the bottom of the pile. sam is always last in polls, so this is a bracket for the 10% or so who always votes for him. because yeah, there's 327 episodes of Supernatural, but how many are popular because of a dean or destiel moment? how many good episodes are drowned out because they focus on sam?

i've chosen, with some crowdsourced peer review (special thanks to @spneveryseason, @suncaptor, and @ambersock!) 125 episodes that are Sam Relevant. Some are extremely sam-centric, some just have a shot where sam looks like he's being crucified that gives me brain worms -- i tried to be generous about it to keep a relatively even seasons distribution! matchups will be random and polls will last 24 hours each. in the tradition of @spnepisodebracket (who this is obviously inspired by and would not be possible without!) i'll try to rb a gifset for every episode in the poll!

Top 10 Tarlos Scenes in Season 4 Results

Unsurprisingly, the soulmates scene was the clear number one choice. About 94% of people voted for that scene, and for good reason! "Hi. You're TK. I'm Carlos. And we're soulmates." Yeah, it's perfect 😭

I love how many votes the deleted cake cutting scene got. About 71% of people included it in their top 10. A clear indication that we desperately needed that joy in the finale! I will be forever grateful that we got to see it and it didn't end up hidden from us forever like the tamale date scene.

The only real surprise for me in the top 10 was the 4x09 scene with TK falling asleep on Carlos. That's the only one of the top 10 that I didn't personally vote for, but I'm not going to deny for a second that it deserves its place! I mean, look at them:
