Faster Diagnosis of Endometriosis With AI - Technology Org
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/faster-diagnosis-of-endometriosis-with-ai-technology-org/
Faster Diagnosis of Endometriosis With AI - Technology Org
ETH spin-off dAIgnose is developing an algorithm to analyse ultrasound images of the womb automatically. This should enable doctors to diagnose endometriosis more quickly in the future.
ETH researcher Fabian Laumer (left) and gynaecologist Michael Bajka aim to facilitate the diagnosis of endometriosis using ultrasound with ETH spin-off dAIgnose. Image credit: Fabian Laumer and Michael Bajka / ETH
Endometriosis is widespread. Around ten percent of all women of childbearing age throughout the world suffer from it. And “suffer” is the operative word here, as it takes an average of eight to twelve years for these benign growths of the endometrium in the abdominal cavity to be diagnosed. Years in which women endure severe pain generally before and during menstruation.
Many gynaecologists still rely on a laparoscopy performed under general anaesthetic to reliably diagnose endometriosis. However, this procedure is not only laborious and onerous for patients but also relatively costly. While endometriosis could be diagnosed for most patients via ultrasound, this calls for a certain degree of experience as it can easily go undetected.
AI expert Fabian Laumer and gynaecologist Michael Bajka therefore founded the spin-off dAIgnose in the summer of 2023. Their goal is to develop an algorithm to assist doctors in interpreting the ultrasound data of the womb during the initial examination in order to diagnose endometriosis reliable and much faster. They are receiving specialist support from the ETH AI Center and their two co-founders ETH Computer Science Professor Joachim Buhmann and Julian Metzler, an endometriosis specialist at University Hospital Zurich.
Entrepreneurs by chance
The fact that Laumer is today developing medical solutions is something he owes on two counts to chance. For although medicine and biology already fascinated him as a child, he initially studied electrical engineering and information technology. It was only when he was studying for his Master’s degree that he had the opportunity to combine artificial intelligence (AI) and medicine. “I heard by chance that Buhmann’s research group was offering a Master’s thesis on the AI-based analysis of ultrasound data of the heart,” explains Laumer. He immediately applied – and was successful.
After completing his Master’s degree he continued the research work in a doctoral project. And once again chance came to his aid. Bajka contacted his research group asking whether AI could be used to detect endometriosis. Laumer was exactly the right person for the gynaecologist specialising in endometriosis to put his question to. For his doctoral project, the ETH researcher developed an algorithm enabling the better interpretation of ultrasound data of the heart. This approach was then transferred to the womb.
Creating a 3D model from 2D images
Laumer and Bajka developed an algorithm that identifies pathologies on the ultrasound images of the womb that are often difficult or even impossible for the human eye to see. To this end, Laumer trained the algorithm with ultrasound images and patient data. “The number of pregnancies and Caesareans, age or phase in the menstrual cycle – all these factors obviously influence the appearance of the womb,” he explains.
An ultrasound image with endometriosis marked in colour. Image credit: Fabian Laumer and Michael Bajka / ETH
The algorithm currently shows the endometriosis in colour on 2D ultrasound images. If the development work proceeds as planned, Laumer hopes to generate a 3D model of the womb by the end of the year on which all growths and adhesions are clearly marked. This could enable gynaecologists to precisely localise endometriosis and better assess the severity of the condition.
Standards for endometriosis diagnosis
To ensure that the dAIgnose AI solution delivers the most reliable results possible, Bajka and Laumer also wish to define fixed standards for the ultrasound examination of endometriosis. A software program with integrated AI will therefore actively guide gynaecologists through the examination in future. “This way we can achieve standardisation while the program will ensure that the entire womb is mapped.”
In order to push forward the research, the spin-off is currently on the look-out for further investors and holding initial talks with manufacturers of medical devices. If everything goes to plan, market entry at the end of 2025 is conceivable. However, various certifications will still be pending to allow the intelligent software to be used in medical devices. One thing is certain for Laumer: “My aim is for women in future to receive a reliable diagnosis within a year.”

“What the hell” Luke muttered rolling into your driveway with the turn of his steering wheel the tail of his truck following behind him as he squinted at the sight of you on the top of your roof artificial spider webs hanging from the pillars of your porch small plastic spiders peaking through the white web
The brunette didn’t rush out of the car until he began to watch your unsafe attempt of getting down from the top of your home aka with out a latter
“Hey! You’re killing me smalls!” You smiled down at him having got back to the surface of the roof of your home at the sound of his scolding voice that held no room for argument
“If i was waiting for my knight in shining armor to come rescue me then i declared i am no damsel in distress i shall save myself” You mocked in a posh gilded voice while Luke rolled his eyes in in response seeming over your act
“If you don’t come down right now I’m leaving you to the hocks” You gasped at the statement a hand over your heart and the brunette practically over the whole situation at hand
“You would never” You sat down your legs dangling over the ledge of the roof your arms crossed and a small mock pout on your face if you searched up ‘4 year old in time out’ Luke was sure your picture would pop up front and center
“Listen here you, if I have to come up there” You giggled at the stern finger that was pointed towards you garnished with stern ice blue eyes you hummed in response twirling a loose thread on your sweater your eyes tilted towards the sky ‘contemplating’ your decision
“God woman are you crazy!?” The brunette hissed as you slid from the roof barely able to catch you in time your frame secure against his flannel covered chest sitting you down on the ground giving you a few extra seconds to make sure you were settled
“Oh please dear lord, will you be ever so kind to help me hang the decor around the the castle” You spoke while Luke’s eyebrows furrowed at the borderline terrible accent shaking his head in disbelief or disgust you couldn’t quite tell
“Get in the house and bring me the boxes” the brunette grumbled and you giddily skipped your way up the porch into you home searching for Halloween decorations

“Boo!” You screamed causing Luke to flinch his body jittering as you snickered at the shivering of his shoulders just having finished pinning the last 3D bats over your door frame
“Jesus Christ! You are insane you hear me!? Lala loopy” He hissed speaking with his hands to emphasis his point as you smirked before putting up grabby hands at the blue eyed pale man while he backed away declining the offer with a passion
“My big helper you have saved the kingdom from a unfulfilling castle and your reward is a lay of my lips” You made a high pitched smooch sound from your lips before placing it on his cheek the stubble tickling yours in return
“You’re gonna be the death of me woman” Luke uttered as you turned your back towards him pressed against his front half before he pressed a kiss to the crown of your head as the wind currents picked up around you both
Luke could argue about the best time of the year

changing the physiology of the universe // love letter to the girl who writes (for @elenagrec)
Self-Organization of the Retina during Eye Development, Retinal Regeneration In Vivo, and in Retinal 3D Organoids In Vitro // My Brilliant Friend TV // L'amica geniale, Elena Ferrante // text by me (brought to you by my unimaginable desire to accent Lila's perception of Elena, who often takes her ability to add magical components to an otherwise unpleasant and meaningless reality for granted)
Everything is connected in L'amica geniale because Elena makes it so. She is the one who offers the symbolism we all see to everything these characters do. She is the only one who sees the metaphorical kingdom behind the disgusting and the banal and the violent. She finds wounds in time and turns on a flashlight and suddenly the blood spilling out of it is a different, more vivid colour. Lila is right to recognize the underlying disorder behind artificial structures humans build to feel more comfortable and Elena engages in the same architectural work of creating boundaries where there aren't any, but she does it so differently from everyone else and that is why Lila loves her. The way Elena does this exists in direct contrast to the false safety most of the other characters are dependent on because the material Elena uses to create her shapes is love stored in attention. It doesn't matter that Nino Sarratore wasn't actually beautiful. It matters that Elena saw him as such. It doesn't matter how Lila Cerullo actually was like. What matters is that Elena Greco loved her. Love is the sole instrument that can shape things in a convincing and tenacious way.

Ortho flying with three floating tablets (representing his parents and Idia) behind him is such a MagiCammable moment, according to Cater and his sisters lol
Family means Nobody is Left Behind or Forgotten.
"Oh my gosh! Who's this little cutie patootie?!"
"W-Wah...!" Ortho scarcely had any time to formulate an appropriate reaction before he was accosted from both sides. They had leapt out from the Queen of Hearts' statue, like jaguars pouncing on unsuspecting prey. The three tablets floating beside Ortho were sent spiraling.
"B-Bwah?!" Idia sputtered from his end, eyes bulging at what his video feed was picking up. There was his poor little brother, smothered by a pair of flashy women. "A normie sneak attack!?"
To Idia's horror, he could see painted nails studded with jewelry running all over the boy's face and hair. He leapt out of his gaming chair, seizing his computer monitor with both hands.
"C-Calm down, Ortho! CALM DOWN, DON'T PANIC!! Y-Your big brother will help you out of this pinch... e-except I don't know how to deal with 3D women!! Th-There's no dialogue selection option IRL...!!"
"You're the one panicking the most here, nii-san..."
"Now, Idia--" their father began--cool, level-headed.
"Hold on, dear," his wife interrupted. "Don't you think it's too soon to intervene?"
"... What are you saying?"
"I mean, these girls are only appreciating Or-kun's cuteness, right? I don't think there's anything wrong with acknowledging that! In fact, the world should be more familiar with how adorable both of our sons are...!"
"B-Betrayed by the mom?!"
"Ahahah... Sorry, Shroud fam~" Cater called as he, too, stepped out from his spot behind a statue. He didn't look particularly apologetic, not with that growing grin tugging at his mouth. "It looks like my sisters took an interest in your youngest. I guess it's not every day you see a bot as advanced as Ortho-chan is, but still!"
"J-Just what I needed... Another sparkly extrovert to complicate this scenario!!" Idia moaned, clutching at his forehead.
"You have to get a pic of us together, Cater!" one sister pouted. "This is too cool not to! Be sure to get the tablets in the shot too, okay?"
"Alright, I'll try." He casually produced his phone. "Everybody has to smush together first though, and Idia-kun's kinda out of frame--"
"Are you, like, for reals a robot?" the other sister demanded, ogling Ortho's metallic body. "That's not cosplay, right?"
"Hehe, nope! I'm one hundred percent custom built by my nii-san."
Idia loudly snorted, far less amused than his brother was. "Cosplay? Are you blind? I'm insulted that you'd even suggest such a stupid idea. Check out the rocket boosters in his feet, the complex circuity in his chassis, the artificial intelligence with a limitless capacity to learn. It's all Ortho."
"That's right! Our Idia built Or-kun from scratch all on his own!" Mrs. Shroud chirped. "Ahhh, our sons are our pride and joy! Aren't they, Papa?"
Mr. Shroud drew out a sigh. "... Yes, dear."
Their tablets drew close and snuggled (or attempted to). Idia could only imagine that his parents had embraced one another on the other end of the line. Hot pink and neon blue twinning.
"Oh, bleh." He rolled his eyes. Mom and dad are being gross and mushy in public again.
Suddenly, his video feed jerked down. Idia got a chunk of pavement, then an eyeful of twinkling makeup and nails. The first of the Diamond sisters had seized his tablet, posing with it in front of her.
"Is he, like, in frame now?" she asked Cater, who flashed her a thumbs up.
"Perfect~ Now everyone else can squeeze in!"
At Cater's direction, his other sister rushed over. Ortho was tugged along like a balloon on a string--though he didn't put up any resistance. The Shroud parents allowed their tablets to lower to the appropriate height for the picture. Cater held his phone out, the camera flipped.
All eager for the photograph except for one.
"D-Don't I get a say in this?!" Idia weakly protested.
Cater laughed--and it sounded a little mean to Idia, as light-hearted as it was. "Sure, you get a say in this! I'll let you know what to say: cheese!"

Of the various designs for the fox emoji, which one would you say is your favorite? 🦊
iOS (2016/2017/2024) -- 7/10 that's a cute foxy, but there is a certain cartooony ness about them that lessens their impact
Android (2016) -- 9.5/10 a wilder foxy, with a serious expression, simple and beautiful
Android (2017) -- 9/10 sudden change entirely, thoroughly simplified, but a core foxyness is retained and you get a good smile that can be both adorably whimsical as well as mischievous
Android (2020-2023) -- 5/10 that's a foxy alright, but she borders on being soulless
Samsung (2016) -- 2/10 easily mistaken for some form of rodent
Samsung (2018) -- 6/10 a lot better but a similar problem, the cute eyes do kind of elevate her though
Samsung (2019) -- 5/10 the plushie look helps a bit but very similar
Samsung (2023, 2024) -- 2/10 you could convincingly claim they're hamsters
Microsoft 3D fluent (2023) -- 0/10 may the gods have mercy on whoever decided to turn the beautiful Vulpes Vulpes into this abomination of artificial plastic
Microsoft (2016) -- 8/10 a striking shape in a beautiful style, but perhaps a bit too lacking in emotion to capitalize on that
Microsoft (2021, 2023) -- 1/10 it's better than the plastic 3D render but still a crime
Whatsapp (all of them) -- 4/10 not as bad as the samsung hamsters but you could still make the case
Twitter (all of them) -- 8/10 a cute and fine foxy, again a bit lacking in the emotional department
facebook (2017) -- 9/10 a delightfully whimsical foxy
facebook (2018, 2023) -- ‽⸘/10 this foxy was taken on a boat, gripped at her tail by some sort of tentacle, dragged to the bottom of the ocean where she saw abyssal truths that would be too much for the mind of any creature, and has now miraculously washed up on shore, wet, bedraggled, knowing
Huawei (2023) -- 8/10 this foxy holds many a wisdom
Joypixels (2016) -- 6/10 one day I may welcome our robot fox overlords but that day is not today
Joypixels (2017) -- 8/10 these foxies are young and curious
Joypixels (2018) -- 7/10 a step backwards from above
Joypixels (2019, 2020) -- 6/10 a villainous foxy full of deceit, not necessarily a badly made depiction under that premise but it is a harmful stereotype!
Joypixels (2020, 2023, 2024) -- 4/10 these foxies are being forced to smile fake smiles at 60 hours per week customer service jobs, please free them, they are calling for help
LG (2021) -- 5/10 a long nose lacking in emotion
Twitter emoji stickers (2022) -- 7/10 that's an expensive fursuit head
SerenityOS (2024) -- 1/10 at least with all the other rodents and hamsters you can kind of imagine them to be foxies if you're told that's what they're meant to be, but this? this is a mouse no matter how you look at it
TossFace (2022, 2023) -- -1/10 a corporate abomination
Sony Playstation (2021) -- 8/10 a cutie!
Noto Emoji font (2023) -- 8/10 a black and white cutie!
Openmoji (2018/2023) -- 2/10 could be convincingly claimed to be a kangooroo
Icons8 (2023) -- 5/10 she's old and angry and doesn't like you
emojidex (2016/2017) -- 3/10 these girls are haggard
Emojipedia sample images (2016/2018) -- 2/10 could be confused for rodents again
the girl you sent me without a source -- 8/10 a serious cutie, but she could be mistaken for a wolf

I recently witnessed someone on twitter with the spicy but interesting position of: the only people vehemently bitching against 2D puppets are the animators who have to use them. So, what's the tea, why's this debate even a thing, and is one side wrong?
Rigged 2D animation, also known as puppet animation, and prolly other terms I'm not aware of. Most 2D animators I know treat it with disdain as something they're forced to work on to survive instead of "real" animation (=hand drawn in this case), and while I've encountered less negative sentiments towards the medium coming from fans, I have seen several people complain about it unknowingly, correctly nailing visual aspects they don't like without knowing their cause. Additionally, it can be really hard to tell apart what's rigged and what's hand drawn in 2D, with many series mixing both to their advantage.
The reason for rigged stuff being so prevalent is that it's cheaper and faster. Where hand drawn requires redrawing your entire character/thing frame by frame to make it move, puppet animation uses, well, puppets, ready-made articulated models you just need to pose. It's also possible to use interpolation - instead of deciding by hand every image between two poses, you let the computer calculate it and come later to tweak how each part moves to make it look good. There is little to no drawing involved in rigged 2D, asides of rare shots that need a little part drawn over when the puppet can't do something specific, or drawing the eyes/mouths/hands/etc when you're making the puppets themselves. Notice I said series and not films in my previous paragraph - this is because animations with longer runtimes and/or shorter production times benefit strongly from this medium. You will not need to clean, to inbetween, to color and whatever other steps can go in hand drawn 2D when you have puppets. You can use the interpolations to your advantage on some movements. It's near impossible to be off model. You don't even need to draw!
And most animators uh, they're here because they like to draw. You can say animating and drawing are two different things, that is true, I've even heard it from the mouth of an insanely talented hand drawn animator called Liane-Cho Han who described himself as a poor drawer despite an impressive 2D portfolio. Poor drawer, good animator, it blew my mind at the time but when I started animating I understood what he meant. But puppet animation is still animation, and much closer to how 3D animation works, with stop-motion being comparable to hand drawn in terms of difference between these mediums. Yet you don't see industry-spanning bitching about 3D vs stop motion! This leads to my next point: puppets are limiting.
One of the advantages of hand drawn animation compared with other animation techniques especially those using character rigs is that you're not limited to said rigs. You can just draw anything, regardless of digital puppet constraints, of art style, of physics. If you can put it on paper, you can animate it. Puppets, both 3D and 2D, have limitations - the art needs to be made (sculpt, drawings) and be placed on a complex invisible digital skeleton allowing you to correctly manipulate your character, which is a job in itself. The more stuff you want your character to be able to do, the more complex it gets. You can't automate all of it. This means productions with lower budget and/or ambitions will tend to have simpler rigs which allow less. An example is angles: when you're hand drawing a character and want to pose them, you can pick whatever angle you'd like for all body parts. Rigs might not give this as an option, especially subtler angles of the head and foreshortening. This might make some movements you had in mind impossible, with a need to stylize your poses and your breakdowns. Not being able to have these angles can make for animation that looks stiff or awkward and can be very annoying to work with depending on the animator.
That artificial stiffness is to me, one of the telling signs something is rigged, and part of the reasons I don't like it myself! That's right, I'm with the haters here. Except stiffness doesn't necessarily mean something used digital rigs, and stiffness isn't inherently a bad thing - as with all art styles, it can just be that, a stylistic choice. Enters a director who's work I'll use as a counter example to the dislike of 2D puppets, both from an animator's and a hater layman's point of view on the results: Michel Ocelot.
Famous in France and way less internationally, two staples of his work are his fixations on fairytales and Africa. Fittingly, his most famous movie is probably Kirikou, a feature film which mixes both. Ocelot's work is stylized in a way unique to him, which can make his work very repetitive, but also makes it instantly recognizable. Some of his staples include static shot compositions, actors that talk like they're reading their lines out of an old book, busy backgrounds and folk tale tropes. Stiffness is just a part of what his movies look like, as are art styles that take inspiration from traditional art and past periods. He started out working before digital puppets were a thing, and while he's embraced digital techniques, releasing a full CG feature film in the 00s before it was the norm, he has worked without, including on Kirikou which is animated the old way.
The earliest of his films I've seen is called Princes and Princesses, it's already got everything typical of his work, and one of the latest of his films I've seen (and among my personal favorites of everything he's done) is called Black Pharaoh, and while decades and different techniques separate these two, they're both based around, you guessed it, puppets. P&P is a blatant hommage/reference to animation pioneer Lotte Reiniger, who used literal paper puppets to animate fantasy movies who's style is very reminiscent of the graceful, slightly simplified illustrations popular at the time. Black Pharaoh uses digital 2D puppets and is entirely animated using the (meticulously researched) style of ancient egyptian wall paintings. Both of these films tell a story, not like movies usually do, but like an orator retelling a tale does. And it works! The characters don't move in a 3D space, but it doesn't matter, they're from a fresco or are paper. The character's don't move realistically and it doesn't matter either, they're not trying to trick your eyes into looking real, they're characters of a story. Ocelot's films are a case where using puppets and their limitations works in favor of the film, not otherwise, and his stuff that's not made with puppets looks like it could be.
I'll briefly talk about a film I hate here to make the final point before my conclusion, netflix's Klaus. This is a film who's insanely impressive animation has floored people regardless of how much they know about animating. Unlike a lot of "this looks very cool" (actually p easy to make) animations you see going viral online, here everyone's right, it is indeed insanely hard to animate like that. Klaus was hailed because of it's uncanny ability to look like modern CG while being entirely hand drawn, which I think is stupid, because it's a lot of effort and talent wasted for a result that looks incredibly generic. Would this film have been bad if it had used CG? Why do people think hand drawn is better than CG in the first place? That I can't answer but the reason studios use it is money: either because it's trendy and will make more money because it's trendy, or because it's cheaper to make, which depends on what you're trying to achieve. In the end, they're techniques. Techniques have pros and cons and things they're better at than others. Time and money are essential to producing a film wether you like it or not.
So: are people wrong to hate on puppets? Nah, it's a question of taste. You can hate the look a technique gives and that's fine. But "ugly" is subjective and it's important to be aware of that if critiquing stuff is your job.
Was that tweet right? Yeah, pretty much, lol. For many if not most animators it's a technique they're forced to use, that removes a major reason they like their job from said job, and can be frustrating to work with. It's worth noting a lot of the work you'll get nowadays is on cheap productions, and the techniques they'll use most will be associated with the slop they are. Doesn't mean you'll inherently make slop. A technique is just that, a technique.
#might add pictures/links if theres interest#animation#mine#i almost made a short film that would have strongly benefited from puppets and ironically one of the reasons i did not do it is.#because idk how to use that technique and it just wouldn't have been as good to animate without!#the cheap look can be a style too: see - of all things - south fucking park#u can hate that show but its look is iconic and it stems from having a 3 peanuts budget and embracing that

Claims to be A-Life... dies anyway
it's wild when you look at old A-Life games that were at times so ridiculously, comically advanced that they barely ran. Artificial life games weren't even particularly aimed at mega nerds! No, they were also aimed at kids who wanted a puppy!
or... some kind of alien thing.

The PC game series of Creatures 1, 2, and 3, Petz 1-4 (unrelated to the later console games series) are prime examples of this genre. Creatures leans more heavily on the science element, but still had a meticulously crafted art style of cute huge googly eyes and big smiles that used pre-rendered sprites. Petz used a very unique 'slap together orbs until you've got a dog' art style.
It's absolutely wild that that genre has withered away. Sure there are tiny indie games that have some similarities, modern petri-dish style games like Gridworld don't quite hit the mark, and it's obvious why:

It's missing the mass appeal. It's missing the googly eyes. This is never in a million years going to pass muster to a kid who asked for a puppy for christmas. This isn't to disparage on the Gridworld dev (singular), it's just a bit odd that the mass-marketed type of A-Life disappeared from the mainstream.
The shallowest argument would be that the dominant art style changed, or that 2D games are no longer popular, but that's not an argument, because it would be possible to make a similarly cartoony animal system in 3D (Spore! Spore has that! but NOTHING EVOLVES IN THAT DISAPPOINTMENT-), and because there are plenty of 2D games still.
I dunno man. Both Creatures and Petz have small, scarily dedicated fanbases wringing absolute miracles out of decades old engines. But what happened to the zietgiest of A-Life? Why, when AI is on the upswing stronger than ever before, is nobody saying "put that shit in a cartoon cat... we'll all be millionaires!" like they used to?

I feel like I need to get the brainworms out and talk about the contrasts and how much cooler the Owlks make the Nomai look (cause Nomai the gentle alien folks my beloved)
Okay, I've recently finished watching SovietWomble and an Astrophysicist's playthrough of the DLC and they both made couple points that I did not realize: SovietWomble noticed that the Owlks were living in on a single planet they frequently remind themselves of, while the Nomai were... Nomaidic and have no reservations about having to settle on two planets they crashlanded on.
Their technology, too! The Astrophysicist noticed the Owlks made use of solar sails to propel the Stranger away from the growing sun, while the Nomai made use of warp technology to go anywhere. The Stranger relies on centrifuge-based artificial gravity. The Nomai treats artificial gravity almost like an afterthought that they made tiles that allow you to walk on walls and ceilings (not to mention the gravity cannons they use to launch ships). The Owlks have light-based projection slides that you manually turn to view the images. The Nomai have 3D projections that allow you to walk in them???
And everything about the Owlks seemed hedonistic and excessive, too; they had wine and board games. Theaters, music halls, art galleries, painting and photographs, and what appears to be a restaurant? A viewing room for the solar system and its eventual supernova death?? Billboards that seem to point out that This Is A Tourist Spot??? Our beloved Nomai only had the basics, and those structures focused a lot on knowledge: a forge, an observatory, a museum, a school. Their greatest projects, the Sun Station, Ash Twin Project, and the Orbital Probe Cannon were just functional and minimalistic enough that all three of them pales in comparison to the grandiose that is the Stranger ringworld.
Which is getting to the point why I made this post: their dam. It almost feels like a monument to how excessive they were, second to the Stranger itself.
We eventually find out that the Owlks stripped their homeworld bare, turning it into a wasteland just to build the Stranger. And yet they have a dam, which isn't even implied to generate electricity! It's seems to be there for the simple purpose of holding back water, which they appear to have a surplus of. We accidentally harvested too much water from our homeworld and turned it barren, oops! The Nomai (beloved, gentle, caring, wise) took great care to leave ore for the Hearthians in the distant future where they evolve and discover space travel. Nomai!!! Best!!!
It feels to me that the Owlks represent the entertainment side of curiosity while the Nomai, the scientific. Which makes us wonder why they came to the Eye at all; were they like the Nomai wanting to study the Eye? Or were they there to gawk at its rarity, much like how they were going to treat a local sun going supernova as Yet Another Amusement?

Ello once again King Crumpet!
More q’s for my AU~!
1 If Jonah and Xanthus got a pet w/ their listener, what would it be? (Regular or exotic if so)
2 How far away can Xanthus hear and is he able to see from far distances? If so, how far?
3 How would Xanthus react to Love if they had multiple powers, telekinetic, summoning, ect..
3.5 Same q above but with more people having different powers
4 Would Xanthus mind if Love spent more time where he can’t see them? Or them hanging out with friends?
5 If Love had a sibling(s)
—————
Trigger warning: mentions of @bu$3
6 Might come off suggestive but would Andrew, Xanthus, and Elias’ dynamic w/ their listener change if they knew their partner was @bu$3d? Not specifying what type though.
—————
7 to refresh a bit, do any of your characters crave a sweet treat? Prob Luca or smth-
8 Do all mythical carry the same characteristics as their human counterparts? Just modified or altered in some ways?
9 When altered can vampire eyes change colours depending on WHAT? And whatt colours can they change into? ISTG if this isn’t answered-
10 If blood from a vampire “lays dormant” in one’s body, then if that persons blood were to be extracted and put into another artificially, would that count as an artificial bond?
Many mind altering questions yes i love this.
Jonah would likely want a cat. Xanthus would likely want something completely different like a capuchin monkey.
He can both hear and see quite far, but his hearing can extend much further. How far, I'm not sure. Maybe a mile radius if he concentrates, but don't quote me on that.
Xanthus would be extremely intrigued and would want to test them out to see how skilled they are. For 3.5, do you mean the general populous? I feel like Xanthus wouldn't have to hide his identity much anymore.
He wouldn't mind it.
He'd likely protect them too.
Too hard to answer because it's not specific and it all depends on their experience.
Luca, Elias, and probably Zaros too.
Mythics of the Sakuverse hasn't really been explored so it's hard to answer. From the ones you know, it seems like it.
*le shrug*
No one knows.

Little Insights
Trying to flesh out the story of how we develop, scientists find clues in surprising places. Mice are useful model organisms, so too are fruit flies and here we look deep into the eye of a tiny wasp (Megaphragma viggianii). The wasp itself is only ~0.2mm long – its eyes contain just 478 cells. Yet a sensitive technique called volume electron microscopy picks out individual cells in artificial colours, revealing complex patterns at the back of the eye. The research captures the first 3D reconstruction of an insect eye. Comparing arrangements of cells like photoreceptors with larger insects may yield clues to how sensory organs take shape on different scales, and, in turn, how patterns of related cells may form in the human eye during development.
