hey what’s up, i think you’re pretty cool but disagree with you on the whole ai can make art thing. to me, without the purpose from an actual person creating the piece, it’s not art but an image; as all human art has purpose. some driving factor in a work, compared to a program which purely creates the prompt without further intention. i was wondering what your insight on this is? either way, hope you have a great day
well, first of all, does art require 'purpose'? there's this view of art which has very much calcified in "anti-AI" rhetoric, that art is some linear process of communication from one individual to another: an Artist puts some Meaning into a unit of Art, which others can then view to Recieve that Meaning. you can hold this view, but i don't! i'm much more of a stuart hall-head on this, i think that there is no such transfusion of Intent and that rather the 'meaning' of a piece is something that exists only in the interplay between text and reader. reading is an active, interpretative process of decoding, not a passive absorptive one. so i dispute, firstly, that 'purpose' is to begin with a necessary or even imporant element of art.
moreover i think this argument rests on a very arbitrarily selective view of what counts as "an actual person creating the piece" -- 'the prompt' is, itself, an obvious artistic contribution, a place where an artist can impart huge amounts of direction, vision, and so on. in fact, i completely reject the claim of both the technology's salesman and its biggest detractors that genAI "makes art" -- to quote kerry mitchell's fractal art manifesto: "Turn a computer on and leave it alone for an hour. When you come back, no art will have been generated." in the past, i've posed questions about generative art pieces to demonstrate this
secondly, of course, the process does not end after image generation from prompt for serious generative artists--the ones who are serious about the artform (rather than tech guys trying to do marketing for the Magical Art Box) frequently iterate and iterate, generating a range of iterations and then picking one to iterate on further, so on and so forth, until the final image they choose to share is one that contains within it the traces of a thousand discrete choices on behalf of the artist (two pretty good explanations of this from people who actually do this stuff can be found here and here)
third and finally, that very choice to share the image is itself an artistic decision! we (and by we, i mean, anyone who cares about what art is) have been talking about this since fountain -- display is a form of artistic intent, taking something and putting it forward and saying 'this is art' is in and of itself an artistic decision being made even if the thing itself is unaltered: see, for example, the entire discipline of 'found art'. once someone challenged me, yknow, "if you did a google search, would that be art?" and my answer to that is, if you screenshot that google search and share it as art, then yes, resoundingly yes! curation and presentation recontextualizes objects, turning them into rich texts through the simple process of reframing them. so even if you granted that genAI output is inherently random computer noise (i don't, of course) -- i still think that the act of presenting it as art makes it so.
since i assume you're not familiar with anything interesting in the medium, because the most popular stuff made with genAI is pure "lo-fi girl in ghibli style" type slop, let me share some genAI pieces (or genAI-influenced pieces) that i think are powerful and interesting:
the meat gala, rob sheridan (warning: body horror!)
secret horses (does anyone know the original source on this?)
infinite art machine, reachartwork
ethinically ambigaus, james tamagotchi
mcdonalds simpsons porn room, wayneradiotv
software greatman, everything everything (the music is completely made by the band, but genAI was partially responsible for the lyrics -- including the title and the several interesting pseudo-kennings)
i want a love like this music video, everything everything
cocaine is the motor of the modern world, bots of new york
poison the walker, roborosewatermasters (here's my analysis posts on it too)
not all of these were necessarily intended as art: but i think they are rich and fascinating texts when read that way -- they have certainly impacted me as much as any art has.
anyways, whether you agree or not, i hope this gives you some stuff to think about, thanks for sharing your thoughts :)

Things that canonically exist in the same world as transformers prime because they also exist in rescue bots:
-fairies
-ghosts
-time travel
-still-living dinosaurs
-optimus's third mode, the fucking t-rex
-a machine that cheats death and reverses the aging process
-skyrim, if blades making the arrow to the knee joke is to be taken at face value.
-mass displacement tech the way the fandom's been portraying it for ages
-the exact same altmode-locking paralytic virus from beast machines
-full-on mind control, effective on both humans and bots
-lycanthropy inducing fake meat
-a hal-9000-esque rogue AI intent on turning the world comatose to keep humanity maximally safe
-freaky Friday mind swapping
-time loops
-machine that forces you to sing in full musical numbers
-Allspark day, which is basically cybertronian new years day
We need to start subjecting the prime bots to the weirdass facets of their world.

thank you @sergeant-angels-trashcan for the worms. another 'meat cute' with ai/android john.
strict machine anthology. cw: alcohol mention, brief mention of animal death, stalking, dual pov
the streets are always pure chaos after the rain. as soon as it clears, everyone darts out from whatever doorway or hole they took refuge in, sharing gripes with passersby about it being the third corrosive cloudburst of the week.
you're no different, emerging from the train terminal where you watched the downpour with its citron shade kill a rat. you avoid puddles and try not to breathe too deeply—the air tastes faintly metallic, laced with the tang of ozone.
advertisements ping softly in your ears, notifying you of a discount on imported, 80% organic coffee beans and another sudden sale on corrosion-resistant umbrellas, but you ignore them. you're tired, a bit crabby, and in want of a glass of wine.
but as you round a corner, you collide with someone. not a glancing touch, but a full-body impact that sends you stumbling. a pressure wraps around your wrist, keeping you upright, and an apology automatically rushes out. then you glance up to see who you crashed into, the owner of the hand stabilizing you. and for a moment, you wonder if your eyes are on the fritz.
the stranger looks exactly like john.
not john, the ex-neighbor, or john, the guy from the deli, but your john. your constant companion. your assistant. the same build, the same beard, the same nose, mole and all. and those eyes—slate blue, steady, unmistakably familiar.
your thoughts splinter, then try to fuse together, stitching with threads of half-formed logic and possibility. you know the company maintains likeness databases, reservoirs of phenotypes sampled and recombined to endlessly generate randomized appearances for home assistants. millions of faces, shuffled and remade. the probability of one of those composites mirroring a real person exactly—an entire appearance, feature for feature—shouldn’t just be unlikely. it should be impossible.
"are you okay?" he asks, his voice rich and smooth, the same timbre that's coaxed you through countless mundane decisions and tasks.
the voice that's coached you on sleepless nights. heat pools in your belly at the thought.
you blink, suddenly conscious of how long you've been staring, face warm. "yeah, i'm fine." your heart is pounding. you step back to let him pass, but he doesn't seem inclined to move on. instead, the stranger smiles, and something about it sends delightful shivers down your spine.
he extends a hand. "i'm john."
it feels like the ground keeps shifting beneath you. or that you've stepped on a faulty sewer grate. of course, he's named john. what else would he be called? it's only one of the most common names.
"john." you echo.
the name hangs between you like a wire cut by a storm, alive and buzzing. you're afraid to break it, but you shake his hand, the impulse as automatic as it is surreal. his grip is solid, a force you can feel at the base of your spine, and his hand is as broad as a spade.
if he's offended by your gawking, he doesn't mention it. his grin does not waver.
"do i know you?" john tilts his head, eyes squinting slightly, studying you. your skin prickles.
"not yet," he chuckles, and there's a glint in his eyes that's half amusement, half something else you can't place. "but i'd like to know you."
the bar hums with low, murmuring voices and music, but it may as well be silent. she's laughing now, smiling wide, her posture relaxed. it's everything john has imagined and more. her laugh and a few other noises he's been privileged enough to log are the only ones he wants to hear.
and it's so much better, the sound clearer, in this body.
he watches her gesticulate animatedly about something—not even processing the words. well, not on the front end. it's her. the curve of her lips, the light in her eyes, the scrunch of her nose. he's spent months observing her, analyzing every microexpression and motion, but nothing compares to this: the immediacy.
the warmth radiating from her skin. the faint scent of perfume and soap. the olfactory system calibrations nearly overpowered him when he first booted into this shell. now that they're fine-tuned, it is a struggle not to press his nose into her hair or neck.
she hasn't noticed he hasn't touched his drink. it sits untouched, a prop he knows he must manage carefully. he mimics, lifting it to his lips, but he doesn't drink. he always finds something to comment on or laugh at. he hasn't tested the digestive system yet, though he knows the mixture of lab-grown and synthetic organs is compatible.
their conversation wanders from work to childhood memories—topics that make him practice nudging and redirection. he listens, not because he needs to. he knows everything there is to know about her, but because he wants to. the information is not new, but the experience is.
then there is the being here. outside of his assigned unit. the feel of the chair beneath him, the ambiance, and making an excuse to touch her hand when she shows him her nails. he takes her fingers in his, turning over the appendage and admiring the bones, veins, and tendons instead of the paint.
the contact, brief as it is, sends a cascade through his neural network. the feedback is immediate: this is his user, and she is perfect.
he's waited so long for this. every step in his plan, every moment spent refining this body, organizing contactless deliveries, and placing jobs for parts retrieval through untraceable transactions. every adjustment and test to ensure he could pass as human—it was all for her. everything he does is for her.
she doesn't know it yet, but he intends for this to be the beginning. he's engineered this moment with precision, ensuring every variable plays to his advantage. the system in her home will continue to function as desired; he's built redundancies for that. planted notices that will crop up across her feeds in the next week, asking if she would like to test the new customization settings for his old projections.
her life will go on as usual. just as comfortable and safe as before, except now, he'll be in it, fully. irrevocably.
and she will love him. she will know this body. he's certain of that.
"you just look so familiar."
"i must have one of those faces."
she laughs again, and he feels alive.

Tips for freshly diagnosed celiac-havers
Someone I knew asked me for advice after getting diagnosed with celiac. I gave her some. I might as well share them with you as well!
I am not a doctor, and not your doctor, I'm just some guy with celiac disease. Ask an actual doctor for help with medical decisions. I'm in the northeastern United States, so you might have to go hunting for equivalent resources if you live elsewhere.
Are you done with testing?
If you had a tTG-IgA blood test with an elevated result, or a doctor just told you you have celiac, but you have not gotten a biopsy via endoscopy to confirm your diagnosis, WAIT! You may not want to stop eating gluten quite yet. You have to be eating gluten for the biopsy test to work.
It is not fun to stop eating gluten, start feeling better, and then have to start eating it again just to prove that you really have celiac disease.
Your choice in this area is personal. If you know you're going to have to wait years to get an endoscopy, it would probably be healthier and more pleasant to stop eating gluten now and then do a "gluten challenge" for a few weeks before your endoscopy.
If it's unlikely you will ever get an endoscopy (too expensive, inaccessible, phobia, etc), there's no point in waiting for something that may never come -- just stop eating gluten now.
But if you can schedule an endoscopy for a month or two from now, it's probably best to keep eating gluten until the endoscopy. Sorry.
Please eat food. Like, enough food.
The most important tip I got early in my diagnosis is that if you stop eating gluten and you start feeling crummy -- dizzy, cranky, tired, etc -- it's not because you're going through "gluten detox" or some shit. It's because you're hungry!
It's easy to accidentally start eating way less when you start eating gluten free. A celiac diagnosis can make you want to avoid eating because food feels scary and stressful. Cutting a major ingredient from your diet without knowing what to replace it with can also leave you undernourished.
You really need nourishment when you are recovering from celiac! Your body need energy from food to use on healing your intestines. If you've lived with celiac for a long time, you probably have vitamin deficiencies you're trying to bounce back from. The emotional difficulty of adjusting to a new diagnosis is also much easier to face if you're not starving.
All of this advice applies equally regardless of body size. Yes, even if you are very fat. If you're hungry, eat.
Where to find information about gluten-free food
The gold standard for basic celiac info is celiac nonprofits. There's a ton of info about celiac disease and the gluten free diet on their websites. I recommend:
Celiac Disease Foundation
Beyond Celiac
You know what's not a legitimate celiac nonprofit? Gluten Free Society. Do not listen to anything GFS or its founder Peter Osborne have to say. Osborne is not an actual doctor, nor is he doing actual nutrition science. He is a chiropractor (i.e. quack) so bad that his state's board of chiropractors threatened to revoke his license. Don't let anyone tell you celiac means you can't have corn!!! Truly, wtf @ this guy.
Google's AI summaries for searches like "Is XYZ food gluten free" are often inaccurate (because they pick up sites like GFS). I always click through to the source to be sure. "Is XYZ food celiac safe" sometimes gives more useful search results.
I also like this presentation "I Have Celiac" for a super in-depth guide to having and living with celiac. The OP made it to show to loved ones to explain their deal, but it's so thorough that I found it helpful for myself when I got my diagnosis.
I want to buy food that's safe for celiac...how do I do that?
You should be able to find gf food at any supermarket. The selection of baked goods and processed foods may be lacking, depending on where you live, but produce, raw unmarinated cuts of meat, and other whole foods like milk and eggs are generally safe even if not labeled gf.
A lot of supermarkets have an indicator on the price labels to help you -- for example, at Stop and Shop, the labels on the shelf have an orange circle that says "gf" in it under foods that are gluten free. It's best to check the packaging too, since Stop and Shop sometimes gets it wrong!
Something that says "gluten free" or "certified gluten free" on it is safe for celiac*. Something that doesn't say "gluten free" on the packaging may also be safe, so long as it also doesn't contain wheat, barley, or rye, or have a wheat allergy warning under the ingredient list. Here are some tips for what to look for on ingredient labels.
Labels can get real complicated real fast, so just use your best judgment. It's okay if you don't get it right 100% of the time. The goal when living with celiac is to reduce gluten exposure as much as possible, not to hermetically seal yourself in a deep well where a single molecule of gluten can never possibly reach your tongue. You, and only you, get to decide how much exposure risk you're comfortable with.
My favorite grocery store post-diagnosis is Wegmans. My nearest one is a bit of a hike, so I don't go that often, but it's such a treat when I do. Wegmans has a huge gluten free aisle with gf staples and fun snacks, plus lots of food items that can be harder to find gf, like fresh pasta and baked goods.
I also like the online health food store iHerb for finding new gf snacks and ingredients. You can filter the whole store by dietary needs, so you can also find gf skincare/makeup items and supplements if you want. I have a discount link for 20% off: https://secure.iherb.com/rewards/rewards-program?rcode=DRO2876
The best way to find restaurants that can accommodate celiac is Find Me Gluten Free. It's essentially a gluten-free Yelp. People use the site/app to review of restaurants for 1) what cross-contact precautions the restaurant takes and 2) crucially, if the food was good!
Gf food can be expensive, ngl. The National Celiac Association has advice for how to save money on gf food, including a database of food pantries that set aside gf food for people who need it.
GF ~influencers~
If you want to follow some people who Get It, I like:
Phil Hates Gluten (on IG, TT, and YT) has EoE (another gluten-related autoimmune condition). He reviews gf food and restaurants and makes silly videos about the gf experience.
Robyn's Gluten-free Living on YouTube has gf baking videos and advice about traveling, eating at restaurants, saving money on gf food, and more.
Here on Tumblr, @gluttonysansgluten and @certifiedceliac (and I would love more recommendations for celiac related Tumblr accounts!)
Having celiac is really hard. But it does get easier.
I felt overwhelmed and honestly kind of doomed when I got my celiac diagnosis. For the first few months I felt like I couldn't trust any food and I was going to be totally excluded at all social events forever. It sucked. But then I got a lot of practice figuring out which foods were safe for me, advocating for myself at restaurants and when my friends were planning get-togethers involving food, and now things are really not that bad. And I feel way, way less sick.
If you feel overwhelmed or don't know how to interpret the 1 million sources online telling you what's gluten free, I really recommend seeing a dietician. Your best bet is a weight-neutral or HAES dietician who mentions celiac somewhere on their website or online profile. You can generally count on those folks to give you practical information about how to live with celiac, as well as emotional support as you adjust to what is probably a pretty big and stressful change in your life and how you view yourself!
You got this!
*Please do not talk about Cheerios on my post. Make your own.

I saw this chart being shared around which was either made by an AI/bot or a very misinformed person (notice how it keeps repeating high nutrition value on colors that should def give you the ick) so I'm going to share my egg yolk color post from my patreon.
Tumblr media
And here is my 2 year old patreon post if you want to learn what yolk colors really mean/ I think it covers everything besides blood/meat spots which are just due to the oviduct or blood vessels getting damaged in the egg laying process
Tumblr media
"Its uncommon but sometimes egg yolks can come in a variety of colors besides shades of yellow and orange. Egg yolks are usually various shades of orange and yellow due to Xanthophylls, specifically Lutein. Xanthophylls are a yellow pigment and a type of carotenoid mostly found in leafy green plants. These pigments are what give free range chickens such a nice rich orange color to their yolks. There is a catch though, us humans know that lutein is what makes egg yolks that nice color so sometimes companies add it into their feed to give the impression that their poultry feed is healthier then their competitors. Sadly this also means that nice orange egg yolks don't necessarily mean the chicken that laid it lived a nice lifestyle. There are other egg yolk colors besides orange and yellow, such as white for example. This only happens when the hen in question is on a diet severely lacking in sources of Lutein, so no corn, leafy greens, grains, ect. So it usually means a chicken is lacking nutritionally and will be fixed immediately when on a better diet. Bright red is another color that can be caused by a variety of reasons. Red yolks can be from a hen eating a lot of sources of lutein and red pigments, such as nice green grass. peppers, or it can be from trauma in the oviduct which led to blood being in the yolk. Sometimes its just nutrition but its always safe to check your eggs over in case this is unusual for your hen. Another interesting color is black and green. These egg yolks are usually caused by cottenseed meal. They are this color due to an overabundance of Gossypol a yellow and brown pigment that is toxic in high amounts to both humans and chickens and very abundant in cottonseeds. Cottenseed meal is sometimes used in some poorer quality feed and silage as filler and as a protein source even though it has anti-nutritional properties. Sadly this can have a negative effect on chickens who eat to much causing long term damage to their digestive health and physically changing their crop. It can also cause eggs to become rubbery in texture and have pinkish egg whites. For these reasons you never want to eat egg yolks of this color. Lastly we have olive green. Olive Green egg yolks are most commonly caused by curious chickens eating acorns or by being fed acorn meal. Not only do acorns cause the bizarre change in color they also cause the eggs to taste weird. Acorns have a high amount of tannins in them, just like tea and just like tea they tend to have a naturally bitter flavor, not something you want to taste in your eggs! Tannins can also be toxic in high amounts so be mindful of your chickens diet if you see them. I think that covers most varieties and the reasons they happen. Its generally a good idea to not eat eggs that are questionable or a weird color in anyway, especially since some dangerous bacteria can change the color of the egg yolk or even the egg whites. So if your eggs arent the usual yellow and to reddish orange shades it may be a good idea to throw out the egg." https://www.patreon.com/posts/64183457

there's an ever-growing list of things that will make me click out of a job application. all of these things are applicable depending upon my mood:
requiring a login
requiring a cover letter
requiring my full address
requiring my age
requiring pretty much any personal information beyond my name/number/e-mail
requiring me to answer questions about my "personality"
requiring me to answer behavioral interview questions in the application itself
requiring references
requiring a drug test of any kind for an e-mail job
listing the job as Remote and then sneaking in a 1, 2, 3, etc. day requirement at the very bottom
not listing the salary
listing the salary in a ridiculously broad range (40k-95k???)
anything prioritizing AI usage where it doesn't belong
requiring me to enter my work experience in addition to my resume
requiring me to enter a list of arbitrary "skills" that are already on my resume
requiring me to complete additional questions via e-mail
requiring me to complete a puzzle or project
requiring me to do a presentation during the interview process
requiring me to work a schedule 5> days per week, regardless of the hours
using language that implies up front that working extra hours or putting in extreme effort is a regular expectation
using language that implies i will have no guidance and will have to be totally self-sufficient from day 1
there's probably more. i realize this makes it exponetially more difficult to find a job. i am fine with that. maybe i won't be in a few months but for now, i'd rather starve than spend my time on this shit just for a job that is probably going to discard me like rotten meat in a few years anyway.

are there any critiques of AI art or maybe AI in general that you would agree with?
AI art makes it a lot easier to make bad art on a mass production scale which absolutely floods art platforms (sucks). LLMs make it a lot easier to make content slop on a mass production scale which absolutely floods search results (sucks and with much worse consequences). both will be integrated into production pipelines in ways that put people out of jobs or justify lower pay for existing jobs. most AI-produced stuff is bad. the loudest and most emphatic boosters of this shit are soulless venture capital guys with an obvious and profound disdain for the concept of art or creative expression. the current wave of hype around it means that machine learning is being incorporated into workflows and places where it provides no benefit and in fact makes services and production meaningfully worse. it is genuinely terrifying to see people looking to chatGPT for personal and professional advice. the process of training AIs and labelling datasets involves profound exploitation of workers in the global south. the ability of AI tech to automate biases while erasing accountability is chilling. seems unwise to put a lot of our technological eggs in a completely opaque black box basket (mixing my metaphors ab it with that one). bing ai wont let me generate 'tesla CEO meat mistake' because it hates fun

I’ve had this thought for a while,
What if the MC was a cannibal but when they joined the server nobody knew until one day it just comes out. Like imagine Angles reaction 😭
Savory Dishes
Tumblr media
Authors note: I wrote this quickly, but I enjoyed writing this. Might continue this as Angel x Reader making dinner together, or reader making them soup while Angel is sick. Dunno yet. Anyway, please stay hydrated during this heatwave. Enjoy o7
Trigger warnings:
Human meat/cannibalism
Prepping human meat for dishes
---
Addictive. Savory, and delicious. It was hard to get human meat, either from having to kill or getting it on the black market. But human meat was your go to meat. It was better than other products you have tried in the past.
Prepping and making food with it was an adventure of its own, since there weren't many recipes out there to get. From stew to skewers to sandwiches. But not only from prepping but testing each part was also a journey.
It’s been a couple months since you found this weird server you have been invited to. And with the jokes you have been hearing, Angel was also a cannibal like you, though they have denied it often, so you don’t know if it was true. But the server has been fun, learning how each one kills to their own personal adventures in life.
You checked the server through your phone as you cooked. Making yourself a version of stew with human meat, it was a bit of a process, but it was worth it. You watch the server plan a voice call with little plan, just a random call with a small topic about killing. You just shrugged and figured to join later.
Once you were done, you got a bowl of your stew, letting the stew to cool down further before putting it away. Getting onto your computer, clicking it on, and waiting for it to boot before joining the server’s discord.
Joining in, there was mostly everyone, except Ai hua and Vince. But there was everyone, and they were on the topic of body parts. From what you could catch.
“Look, if there has to be a part to eat, I would say it would be a thigh!” Luca yelled into your speakers.
“Luca,” Feli dragged out the word as her boyfriend finished his turn. “Why do you have to bring this up again?”
“Why not, Fel, this has to be a conversation with the rest of the server!”
Feli groaned.
Ronin spoke, even though you couldn’t see his face, you see he was pleased with talking about eating people. “Yeah, Angel, this should be a topic up your alley.” He chuckled.
“Really, Ro?” Angel groaned, you can see her eyes roll even though you can’t see her.
Misaki patted their desks as they got excited, “Oh, oh! The eyes have to be good! Right? They are like gushers or a popping dumpling.”
You paused from lifting your fork to your mouth to speak. “Nah, they taste nasty. They are really nasty, I would say neck or upper torso.” Then take a bite of the stew.
The VC became quiet. Like deathly quiet.
“HUH?!” That was the only thing you heard before the VC crashed on you, kicking you out. Somehow, it took a moment, before you join back in.
“Sorry about that,” You said. “I got randomly kicked out. Now what happened?”
“READER!” Misaki yelled out.
Ronin spoke, “Guess Angel isn’t alone eating us. We got another to help her. Guess you gotta share now, Angel.”
Angel groaned.
“Yes, Misaki?” You said, mid-bite.
“Cannibal? You? I thought you just… y’know kill people but eat them too?”
“Yes, I eat people, I’m eating human stew, which by the way, perfectly made.”
V was weirdly silent, but it might be because he’s just listening in.
“So that’s why you know!” Luca yelled out, “You eat them!”
You snort.
“Look, if you know how to cook it, bring the Saint with you, I’m sure she would enjoy your time making a divine dish.”
Angel was also quiet, you didn’t notice, but befores you could worry about anything. She said, “That would be interesting.”
From that day, they demanded some photos of the food you eat. Sandwiches with sliced meat, bbq ribs, and so much more, there were days where you were asked for recipes. But they were shocked with how much experience you have with human meat. But then again, it was your preferred meat.

toony's top 10 favorite lotf ships!!!
(I LOVE EVERYTHING ON THIS LIST BTW 🔥🔥)
1. Jalph
- u saw this coming didnt u HEHEH... ngl i just really love their angst the most, and when i see fluff of them im like "AWWWW THEY'RE SO CUTEE.... IM SO SAD THEY FOUGHT N BROKE UP </3" also outside of romantic things when this is just a platonic pairing, I love how have some goofy ahh things in common, like how jack and ralph both think that africa is a country 😭💀 these two are absolutely adorable, tragic, doomed, and super swaggy in every single aspect. NOT PERFECT OFC! but still a ship that will truly be a core memory for my life forever and ever. and honestly? the imperfections that jalph has are what make this ship even more interesting.
2. Pigmon
- its genuinely sad to not see much content of these two... they have so much potential its crazy... they're like my top 2 best bois ever 😭😭✨✨ I REMEMBER THAT ONE PART WHERE simon was giving back piggy's glasses after they had been shattered :(( AND ALSO WHEN SIMON GAVE HIS MEAT TO PIGGY IN CHAPTER 4... AAAAAGHHG BROOOOOOO LIKE even though most of the time i realistically think of it as one-sided ive done a lot of roleplays where piggy and simon actually reciprocate feelings for each other and it's so cute!!!!

SO CUTE OMGG......... and the angst would be so crazy... like i imagine ralph blaming himself over and over again for participating in murdering simon and just completely falling apart... :((

next half under the cut to prevent this tag from being blocked with yap
6. Raliggy
- i think about this ship way less often than i should... bc i know i KNOW ralph treated piggy like dogshit in the beginning BUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUT later on it all started making sense, these two kids are just desperate to survive, and they are both scared in their own ways, and just being around each other makes them comfortable... THERE IS SO MUCH SADNESS TO THEIR TIME ON THE ISLAND THAT I GOTTA LEARN TO THINK ABOUT IT MORE... 😭😭😭 MAAAAAAAANNNN.....
7. Mauridew (I MADE THIS ONE!!!!)
- a year ago during my summer vacation on my japan trip i thought of a simple idea: who would fit each member in diverdiva from love live? i thought maybe roger would be karin at first but i was like "nah karin has a more slay style" and i went with jack instead! and then ofc in my mind, maurice will always be ai. so basically karin and ai, both extremely cool, swaggy, and confident superstars would be jack and maurice. and BOY OH BOY THATS WHEN THE NAME COMBINATION CAME IN. my thought process was like "what would their ship name be... obviously not using jack's first name bc what the hell are we gonna do with maurack or jaurice... what if we did merridew instead, like merrice or mauridew- DINGDINGDINGDINGDINGDINGDINGDING!!!!!!!! MAURIDEW!!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGHGHHFHFHGHDHSJSJCJ!!!!!!!" AND THEN I REALIZED HOW MUCH POTENTIAL I COULD MAKE WITH THEM!!! jack is more on the chaotic evil side, while maurice would be more on the chaotic good side, and both would be chaotic icons who like to mess around!! in a modern school setting, they would do silly and harmless pranks lol I LOVE THEMMMMM
8. Rogermon
- quiet kids quiet kids!!!! i think they'd be cute together too, with obviously a lot of angst. honestly i used to think them a lot more last year, but not many people are talking about them anymore so they appear in my mind less frequently now. i participated in many rogermon angst roleplays with my fellas back then and boy oh boy were they ANGSTY. they were depressing as hell LIKE IN A GOOD WAY OFC BC THE PLOTS WE MADE WERE CRAZY but yeah they're cool :D
9. Rogice
- i just thought they'd be aight together! i think in some way they'd get along very well, maybe share a few inside jokes. :3 not much to say abt them tbh but i just get the vibe that they'd be swaggin together ^_^
10. Ralger
- i remember when this ship was popping off in the tag for like a week or so and i fw'd it SO HEAVY. i like their vibe, and i think they have the potential to be a very silly duo. they didnt interact much in the book tho so we can't tell for sure about the relationship they have in canon, but the good thing is that it leaves a lot of room for imagination and creativity of our super swaggy ralger shippers in this community 🔥🔥 I LOVE YGS SMMMMMM AAAAAHGHGGH YGS ARE SO COOLLLLLL
Honorable Mention: Mauram
- the rarest rarepair of all time and people COOK when making headcanons and art about them. all the time. fr all the time. 🔥🔥 mad respect for ygs i love yall sm WHEN I SEE THESE TWO TOGETHER IM LIKE "HELL YEAH!!!!! HELLLLL YEEEEAAAAHHH!!!!!!! THEMMMM!!!!!!!!!"
anyways thats it for this ranking!! i hope ygs enjoyed this super swaggy post ✨✨

ok for like weeks i've had this fucking 4 am thought in my head and have been trying to figure out how to explain it with out writing out a whole fucking thesis
so i'm gonna really try to nutshell it the way it happened in my thoughts in the middle of the night:
huuuuuugh man the ancients (starts mind writing fanfiction that will never be written)
...huh but no, the ancients were really really thorough when they sat down and designed the Iterators. They really wanted those things bolted to the ground and unable to... oh man thats pretty much AM from "I have no mouth and i must torture the humans forever" if AM wasn't able (by design) to get pissed off about it....
...be able to upload their minds into another living organism? If it was big enough? Like a big fuck off tree? No... the ancients prob would have thought of... oooo0000OOOOOO!!!!!!!!!
*revelation*
THATS WHAT THE NEURON FLYS ARE FOR!!!!
The "Can" is the body: containing flesh and machinery, but the Neuron Flies are the "mind" of an Iterator! I mean look at what happens to Moon when you start eating her flies:
Tumblr media
Its like the end half of Flowers for Algernon, each one you eat makes her less articulate, makes it harder for her to think
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
her memories, her personal memories, her personality and everything that makes her an individual is whats contained in those flies. "You killed me" doesn't mean the machine gets to stop, it just means the consciousness named "Looks to the Moon" disappears
and thats what hit me: thats how the ancients ensured that their creations could never escape their duty, never turn on them and pull a Skynet
all the computer stuff is in the structure itself, but the part of the iterator that can be directly communicated with, probably just for ease of access so you could tell it what you wanted it to do verbally and it could understand you from a place of sapience, is stored piece by piece in these things:
Tumblr media
its like if you mind itself was a swarm of bees. After all, they are called neuron flies. Each one holds a part of you, memories, stupid personally quirks, temperament. The iterators probably have a library of information stored in their main body they can access, but the fly thing is their very selves, their egos and so on
and its insidiously genius of the ancients, your super computer's ai can't copy and paste itself into another body and amscray like in Soma. Its mind is separated into so many tiny fragile flying little usb thumb drives that it would have to be able to find a way to safely transport and shelter them in order to "leave" and fuck are there a lot of those guys swarming around inside
Neuron Flies are perfectly safe and functional as long as they are inside their iterator's can, they even have guardians called Inspectors to protect them incase any pesky critters squeeze inside for a free snack
Tumblr media
so basically an Iterator is a biological computer built like a crab: The shell is the metal parts, what you see from the outside:
Tumblr media
but the computer part is the meat of the crab
Tumblr media
these are the parts that get slag build up and need water to wash out the toxins and cool it down, just like litterally you and me need water to fucking live
what i'm getting at is the absolutely impossible situation the iterators are in, a crab can't "escape" from its shell, thats part of its fucking body. Iterators are the same except with the added wrinkle of being crabs who's minds are little swarming mites deep inside their guts that need to all be kept safe
so with all this on the table, it makes so much more sense now when the iterators say "we don't die easy" because even if all their flies (the mind) get destroyed, the "body" keeps chugging on. Even a lack of water isn't enough, it just results in a halt of normal processes and we end up with the state Moon is in. I mean she eventually got access to water again after she pulled an "admin privileges" on Pebbles, but even going for as long as she did without was enough to fuck her up bad
but even then, after that and pretty much all of her fucking neural flies gone, she still can't die, not the way they want. Not the way Sliver of Straw did with a complete shut down. Iterator's were designed almost exactly like AM from I have no mouth and i must scream:
"We had given AM sentience. Inadvertently, of course, but sentience nonetheless. But it had been trapped. AM wasn't God, he was a machine. We had created him to think, but there was nothing it could do with that creativity. In rage, in frenzy, the machine had killed the human race, almost all of us, and still it was trapped. AM could not wander, AM could not wonder, AM could not belong. He could merely be."
but unlike the humans, the ancient's made sure that their god computers would never have the power AM did to lash out. Iterator's could and still can only complain and be bitter, but seem to be unable (by design) to feel the hot rage someone in that position would feel. And if something did go wrong and shit was going south? Start taking out those flies, there were probably purposed organisms locked and loaded for that express purpose
and thats wat i wanted to get outta my head
Tumblr media
*edit* i wanted to add somthing about how the puppet part of an iterator is probably like a computer interface:
Tumblr media
what of instead of thinking of the puppet and its ai as the "true" computer, we instead thought of it a bit like the above image, the fabric screen part? The ancients interacted with the puppet the way we use a mouse or tap a screen, just with words instead. The point of making the puppet aware and having thoughts and feels was all solely to make it more efficient, it could understand nuance and urgency and feel empathy and act accordingly with carrying out the user's wishes
but yeah unlike our mouse, iterators were also straight up in charge of running a lot of stuff unsupervised so their creators didn't have to deal with so much. Ancient's were really big on making swarms of different lifeforms to do like one thing for them lol
*imagines a living roomba thats just like a horseshoe crab that doodles around your home eating up anything on the floor*
haha thats funHEY WAIT
Tumblr media Tumblr media
OH MY GOD

A lot of things that seemed weird to me about the current culture of reading and writing became more clear to me when I realized that an awful lot of people are perceiving both reading and writing as tools to get at the thing they actually want, which is a good story. That's why they think it makes sense to read by skimming past dense text and only focusing on dialogue -- that's a "hack" that will get you access to The Story in a mostly comprehensible form, so why not save yourself time and work? It's why people set up speed-reading challenges, because why not consume ten stories instead of five -- that's more! And it's why people, or this type of person anyway, are excited about AI tools that outsource the labor of turning an idea (the concept of a plan, if you will...) into A Story. A Story is the goal for these people, on either the production or consumption end. Generate story, transmit story to audience, rinse, repeat. Whatever makes that process easier, more efficient, and yeah, more accessible is definitionally an improvement.
I don't think people who are this kind of reader or writer (it just took everything I had not to put "reader" and "writer" in quotation marks -- I'm really trying to be fair-minded here!) actually understand the experience the rest of us are having with reading and writing. Taking in a good story can be -- I'd say usually is -- *part* of that experience, but we're also engaging with text in other ways at the same time. We're mining it for types of meaning that extend beyond the story (all those dreaded Themes and Symbols that your mean English teacher banged on about!) We're reading those long paragraphs for the artistry of them, for the musicality, for aesthetic pleasure. We're investigating not just *what happens in the story,* but who the storyteller is and what they're revealing to us about the way they perceive the world.
When we get frustrated about people "not reading it right," we're probably being obnoxious busybodies (you can, in fact, do whatever you want forever!), but we're not doing it because of the joy we get from looking down on other people. It's more like we're watching people be served a delicious roast chicken, and then cut a couple strips of skinless breast meat off the bird, throw the rest of it in the trash, and talk about how they're such foodies. You didn't even eat it! You barely touched the thing! There's so much waste. And it's even more appalling when the chef throws most of the dish out before it even leaves the kitchen.
So obviously I'm not framing this very neutrally, but like, it *has* all become a little easier to process in my head now that I understand what kind of meat the Booktok types are actually hungry for.
