What work took you the longest to write? Tentablocked (Warframe 1999 fic), ironically also one of the shortest stories to write. I just kept on "shame-blocking" myself at every turn. :°D

How many WIP’s do you have in your docs for next year? None. I can't keep anything in a WIP state for too long, lest my inspo decides to peace out as my hyperfixation diverts its attention elsewhere.

What’s your shortest work of the year? Gamer Bond (Warframe 1999 fic), 2.655 words spread into a single chapter.

What WIP are you taking into next year with you? Maybe that super-dramatic fic about Amir's near death experience during a mission (totally not an Amir/Quincy fic *COUGH*). It's nowhere in any doc file, but it's still rotating in my head from time to time.

This one from "Operation: Get Along" (you'll never guess that it's another Warframe 1999 fic):

Amir gradually closed the distance with the other. He would’ve also been aggressively poking his chest, had he not needed the free hand to crawl in Quincy’s direction. “Aoi can fuck shite up, Arthur can fuck shite up, and you can fuck shite up. Each one of us can fuck shite up.” He went relentlessly on, now with his nose a mere couple inches from the one of the speechless marksman. “And you know why? Because, and here’s a shocker to your egomaniac macho self, nobody is perfect! Not even you!” “So, mark my words,” the fed up technician concluded his rant, “next time I’ll hear this is all your fault, Amir or something like that, I’ll leave you with three options: a simple fuck you, a warning zap, or a broken nose.” Quincy couldn’t hold back a snort at that very last statement. “Oh, please. You couldn’t even hurt a fl- OW!” Amir had just managed to deliver a quick blow at Quincy’s nose. Fortunately for the marksman, the space they were trapped in didn’t offer much room for a full swing and his nose was left intact, only mildly aching. “Wanna try that again, buddy?” The techie hissed lowly.

Technically my Avorah wip pile, but my longest actual fic is still the Bering and Wells fic Being Known I wrote back in February! Followed by Star Wars visions of a future past from October.

Ohhh so hard to pick just one, but the first thing that came to mind was my Avorah fic of borrowed swimsuits, panic attacks and parties without purpose!

I also made a moodboard for it and it's still my pinned

Quickest to write: Well Developed Personality. It's the shortest work I wrote this year, and iirc, it was done in a sitting. (If anyone goes out to read it, 'ware the tags please. It is NOT my usual fare.)

Favorite work of this year: This is a tossup. No one reads my work more than me, I am the target audience, after all. There are two that I've returned to again and again.

Feo, Fuerte y Formal - third in the Vessel series for Ghoulcy, and the one that - for me - has the most emotional impact and evokes the most of the atmosphere? aesthetic? vibe? of the setting. Also, putting domestic fluff into the Fallout universe? Challenge accepted.

Destiny Is Just In the Timing - the aforementioned (in the other ask) Shaerric fic. First of all, one should adore their OC's, and I do adore Shae Cadash. Secondly, outsider POV is a trope that I love too, and half the fic is written that way. Third, and maybe most importantly, I think I did some of my very best reassembling of canon ever. My final author's note even says it's the most canon-compliant canon-divergent thing I've written in years. 🤣

6:- 5 one-shots and a drabble

I really only write short one-shots, but two of them deserve a bit of fleshing out in a follow-up or three

4. What was your favorite thing you wrote?

I Need You was the first thing I wrote that has a possible continuation. I was obsessed with the idea of forcing the acceptance of the mating bond, and the subsequent fallout. More to come, hopefully! The muses bit me hard that day. Thank you, @mistandmemories, for popping my sprinting cherry!

Probably not what the question is asking, but I'm also pretty proud of some of the comments I leave on my favourite fics! (FUCK YOU, TESSALANTERN, and 🌈DENIAL SOUP!!!🏳️‍🌈 stand out as my favourites.) It takes a lot to digest so many plotlines and such incredible writing, and the live-reacts help me process the amazing stories that we've been blessed with. These authors put so much into their work, and I enjoy showing my avid appreciation (and horror)! ( @jules-writes-stories and @iftheshoef1tz, yours are coming once I recover from my indigestion and brain rot.)

5. What piece was your most experimental or different from your usual style?

I'm very pleased with my gift for @born-to-riot. It's the sweetest thing I've ever written and it's not even smutty! Not Sorry was probably the furthest deviation from my genre, as I mainly write smutty Sadlube where nobody is happy and the sex starts, continues, or ends in tears. Writing something for someone else took me out of my narrow band and I like it.

6. Did any fics surprise you - either while writing or their reception?

I was pleasantly surprised when commenters were keen for me to continue I Need You and Not Sorry. I did leave a lot more hanging than I normally do. I usually keep a couple of threads floating in the wind to tempt speculation, but I overdid it with those two. It's time I give y'all my LORE!!!

7. Do you have a fic you wrote and loved that went under the radar? (This is your sign to reblog/repost it!)

I Can't if you Won't, but I Will is my only Casriel, though they're both mated to their assigned vipers. It's their mutual substitution pining fuck! I spent ages reading and rereading the High Lord meeting and the subsequent night and morning in order to ensure everything was canon compliant. It first struck me when both Cassian and Azriel disappeared while Mor was getting disappointingly railed by the veritable Sex God of Prythian.

8. Who is an artist that inspired you?

@fourteentrout , @nus4y , @lucychanart , @works-of-heart , @krem-does-stuff , @naariel , @tendermiasma , @elleybug , @chunkypossum , @copypastus , @strykozart , and many more have all created works that I've stared and stared and stared at! For educational purposes.

10. Who is a new author you discovered?

I just got back into ff this year after two decades away. Everything and everyone is new to me and I can't be happier with the comradery between us all! But @buffy-vanserra, @g00seg1rl, @nus4y, and @jolenes-library have been recent additions to my subscribe button.

11. Did you do any collaborations? How did it start?

I haven't collaborated, but I did participate in the gift exchange, which gave me inspiration that I never would have found on my own (thanks @born-to-riot), and allowed me to dump my thirstiest dreams onto my Santa (thanks, @brunetterebel010). I also betaed for the first time (on the very last day of 2024) for @shadowsandlint, who I've been simping over since I first came across her work.

12. What accomplishments are you proudest of?

Hitting the publish button. I am so very shy about sharing the shit that falls out of my brain, but I've been met with only kindness and support instead of judgement and critique.

13. What did you learn about writing or creating this year?

Just get it down. You can edit later. Stop perseverating over the little things.

14. Any advice you’d like to share with new or aspiring writers?

Do it, don't be shy. We promise to be nice about it.

15. What are your creative goals for 2025?

3 for the ao3 wrapped please 💜

The work I'm most proud of is my Bingqiu baby fic, may she be a light to you in dark places (when all other lights go out). (Podfic by @kickit-kick here.)

I started brainstorming an SV canon divergence fic with Luo Binghe as movie!Arwen from LOTR in February or March--but since I already had several MDZS projects in progress, I decided to shelve the LOTR AU and come back to it after completing one of my existing WIPs.

In April, I realized that I could use the Arwen!Binghe plot to fill a prompt for the SV Gotcha, so I got to work and managed to complete the fic in about two months. I'm very happy with how the story turned out, but finishing it within nine-ish weeks was a very welcome plus!

However, none of this would have been possible without my wonderful illustrator, @habunnn. A great deal of the fic came about thanks to their art; I wrote the passage about Tianlang-jun biting baby Hengxia to soothe her while she was teething because Habun drew a cute sketch of TLJ biting Hengxia's cheek, and the final chapter (where Hengxia celebrates her third birthday) was written because of Habun's illustration of Bingqiu and Hengxia cuddling outside the bamboo house after her birthday party. The fic was originally supposed to end with Hengxia's birth: but since we had art of toddler Hengxia, I had to write an extra chapter to go with it!

Weirdly, Leo. Maybe not expected for a practically exclusive Donnie x Reader writer, but I feel like I've just gotten to know him a bit more with "He Called Them Sweets" and the most recent beach chapters in atwlp. I dunno. the voices.

The beginning of the next ATWLP chapter. Stuck it under the cut as a little treat.

“Good morning, lovebirds,” Mikey said cheerily as you and Donnie made your way into the kitchen. 

Everyone else was already sitting at the table by the time the two of you got there. Freaks against nature, the lot of them. No one should have that much energy before eight am.

You flipped Mikey off with one hand, using the other to retrieve an energy drink out of the fridge. 

“Y’all aren’t dressed?” April asked, looking over Leo’s shoulder.

You took a long drink out of the can before responding, “Between whispering sweet nothings to each other and the constant banging, Donnie and I simply don’t have time to change.”

“We have our swimsuits on underneath our clothes,” Donnie corrected, not even bothering to shoot you an annoyed look.

“Tomato, potato,” you shrugged, raising the can to your mouth again.

“Oh-kay then,” Leo said, “Beach bus is leaving in fifteen minutes. You two make sure you get something to eat before load up.”

You burped before speaking, “We aren’t portalling?”

“Beach bus is sacred. You do not disrespect the beach bus,” Leo said solemnly.

“Leo gets tired portalling with this many people,” Donnie corrected, “He’ll be asleep all day tomorrow if we don’t give him a break.”

“Beach. Bus,” Leo insisted.

“Beach bus,” Donnie agreed, tossing you a protein bar without looking.

You jumped up and caught it in your mouth, only lifting your hand to tear the plastic wrapping.

Donnie looked at you with disdain, “You’re a fucking animal.”

“Woah, deja vu,” you said, setting down your drink, “Didn’t you say that last night?”

“Sweets.”

“Weird, that too. But it sounded more like–”

“I cannot deal with this today,” Leo said, putting his hand over your face and keeping you from speaking as he walked out of the kitchen, “Fifteen minutes.”

AO3 Wrapped [writer’s edition]

1. Biggest surprise while writing this year?

The may prompts 2024 had been great fun. I would never have thought that they would inspire me to write two continuous fics using the prompts. "A Perfect Place", the funny so-called "Bed Shop Boys-AU" and the tattoo shop AU "White Pony Tattoo" with a bit hurt/comfort. The surprise has been that I wrote the texts "live" each day fitting to the prompts which had not been public before but yet, both stories developed on their own into something that I had not (could not have) plotted.

2. How many WIP's do you have in your docs for next year?

Maybe 8? Cannot really tell. Various stages, mostly very little text.

3. Your favorite character to write this year?

Once again, I've found to really like writing terror-inducing "Iceman" Mycroft Holmes in "Take My Broken Love". Especially his well-hidden brotherly feelings for Sherlock underneath his cold exterior.

4. The character that gave you the most trouble writing this year?

That has been Mary Morstan in "Take My Broken Love". I don't like the character and wrote her being a horrible person in the fic, but it has still been difficult to keep my dislike for her out of it and write her evil-being in a neutral kind of way. If this makes sense...

5. What's one pairing you want to explore next year?

I'll keep exploring Johnlock. I have no interest in writing another pairing.

6. Did you receive any gifts this year?

No.

7. Did you do any collaborative works this year?

8. What do you listen to while writing?

Currently, I don't listen to music when I'm writing because I cannot really concentrate on the words.

9. Favorite line/passage you wrote this year?

That is the dialogue between Sherlock and John when they perform a script Sherlock has written in "A Minor Detail". It's the funniest thing I've written so far (comments confirm that it is hilarious). No spoilers but - as a teaser - it contains the expression "succulent manhood".

9. Favorite pairing you wrote for this year? 16. What’s your most common “Additional Tags” tag? 30. Biggest surprise while writing this year? 3. What work are you most proud of (regardless of kudos/hits)?

Favorite pairing: Looking at if from the perspective of 'had the most fun writing it', Shae Cadash/Varric Tethras. Varric was my first DA love and the vector for what the last four years of my life has been in fandom. I'd drifted away from DA in the last year or so (as evidenced by my return to FO4 and a brief swing into SVM/TB, Dr. Who and FOTV), but Shae stomped into my head, told me she was going to love that dwarf if it killed her, and I didn't stop her. 🤣 I often say that I am not the navigator of my stories, I am merely the narrator.

Most common 'additional tag': Established relationship. My beloved. For me, a story doesn't end at the moment of declaration. I much prefer exploring what happens next. 8 of 17 fics published this year have this tag.

Incidentally, but not coincidentally, this tag is tied for first place with 'explicit sexual content'. Because I'm also an unabashed purveyor of smut. 😏 Let's face it, what happens next is usually they bang about it.

Biggest surprise while writing: *snort That I managed to write as much as I have. I've been pretty burned out, ngl. I finished out 2023 with the completion of two longfics, one of which I'd been working on for two and a half years. The combined total between just those two works is nearly half a million words. I had every intention of taking it easy this year, to rest. And I have, honestly. I'm not pushing myself to be creative and I'm not putting any pressure on myself to deliver. But I still managed to write over half a dozen oneshots and seven chaptered fics, one of which will carry over into next year for posting. (I can see my Angel giving me a knowing look, she knows how I am.)

Work I'm most proud of: Oh, this one's tough. This is like asking me which pairing is my favorite. In 8 years of being on ao3, I have only one singular fic that I'm not proud of. But, with all that said...

Different Animals. Like many others, I fell headlong into Ghoulcy after the show dropped. And, in typical fashion for myself, I started writing things for the pairing before finishing the source material. I had the idea for the oneshot pretty early on, but spent weeks reworking it until it shone (and have continued to edit it since it was posted, but that's another story). It has a good blend of angst and recovery, the layers I'm well known for, and the smut I'm even more well known for.

It wasn't the first thing I wrote for this pairing, but it's arguably the best. And I know this question is supposed to be regardless of metrics, but...the stats on it are impressive to say the least. I'm not the type to seek validation as a form of self worth, but I must say it's gratifying to have something like that out there that is so beloved by so many. I wasn't expecting that, tbh. Figured I'd throw it out into the void and move on with my life. And then the response was so overwhelming I was inspired to write more and now there's a whole series of oneshots for those two in my archive.

2024 fic reading stats / AO3 Wrapped - Reader Edition

Last April I got the idea that I wanted to, in some form, get a better understanding of how much and how often I read fic, and some other stats as well. Obviously I knew the answer was a lot and often. But you know the urge to make lists and sort things when you're stressed? Yeah, that hit, so I started up a spreadsheet starting May 1st. In my spreadsheet I logged the date I had read the fic, the fic's title, author, fandom, ship, rating, and word count. I also added the AO3 link to the fic which has proven handy in looking up recs and stuff like that!

I just wanted to share some of those stats now that I've made lil graphs to go with them and everything lol

Starting with the totals:

Last year, from 1 May to 31 Dec, I read about 3,928,191 words of fanfic. (Now, that's the logged amount, but it's not... perfect. I won't go into detail but let's just state that that amount is still very telling!)

Total of different fics I read during the logged time was 478. (There are 479 logged entries but one of them was a reread, so.)

The most amount of entries for a single day was 8, and it happened three times lol. Two of those I know I was sick but idk what that third day was, probably a wonderfully lazy sunday.

I logged at least 141 different AO3 authors. (Some people using several pseuds may have confused my count a little but give or take a couple!)

Here I have to shout out @fuddlewuddle because if I read 478 fics, 93 of those were hers. I don't even know what to say except that I'm glad our freaks match each other <3

A fun thing to note was that I myself made it on my top 10 list of "favorite" writers based on the amount of fics logged because I reread my own stuff frequently enough! That's kind of uplifting to think about. If sorted by word count, however, I am farrr from the top, because I tend to write shorter fics :D But I'm happy to keep it that way!

Fandom:

Showing off some percentages based on the 478 logged fics. Ahem, as you can see, Top Gun continues as the ruling fandom in my life, but there were some new smaller fandoms coming in as well! And that strange, two movie fandom fusion is, of course, courtesy of Fuddle...

If I were to sort these by word count instead, the percentages would stay pretty much the same, except Other fandoms would give a tiny bit of its slice over to Ted Lasso.

Ship:

Again, this is based on the total of 478 logged fics. Quelle surprise, I'm a hangster girl and there's a lot of that on the market, so 183 out of those 478 were hangster fics. Other ships here entails multi-ship fics (where the ships are equal instead of clear main ship & background ship type of thing), poly ships with a number of varying character combinations, and ships that had less than 5 logged fics with it as the main ship.

(The tiny red dot says roykeeleyjamie and it had 6 logs in total. The purple dot with the name not fully showing is macheresin with 10 fics.)

Rating:

This is again based on the total of 478 fics.

My own writing stats:

I posted 18,687 words' worth of fic last year (though some thousands of words haven't made it to AO3 yet, but were still written last year). As you can see, I am still very much a reader rather than a writer, but it's the best of both worlds, getting to do both!

Overall, I thought this was a fun experiment, and I'm going to keep up with my spreadsheet for the new year – because what is life without spreadsheets, really.

Guess if I realized I had forgotten to log at least one longer fic after finishing up the last of those graphs!!!! Sighhh

5. What work of yours got more feedback than you expected?

I think probably no one's touched me there in a damn hot minute. This one was a bit self-indulgent so I was surprised people loved it as much as they did.

11. What work took you the longest to write?

Definitely i wanna hold your hand (and colossal dick, eventually), which was my very first poolverine fic. I really wanted to do their dynamic justice and I was so fucking nervous to write Wade at first. I sat on this one for at least a month rewriting Wade's jokes.

16. What’s your most common “Additional Tags” tag?

Soft Logan, which is my weakness. I can't help myself.

27. What do you listen to while writing?

Weird answer, but my own music. I like to listen to the same thing over and over again when I'm in the zone, and I make myself instrumentals to go with the fic vibes. If not my own music, probably Maggie Rogers, Sea Girls, Hozier, or Sydney Sprague.

28. Favorite work you wrote this year?

My favorite is written on these walls are the colors that i can't change. I'm truly a whump and hurt/comfort writer at heart and I loved writing this one so much.

Aaaah I just love this question, thank you so much Alex! You know what, I’ll answer it twice since 5 and 7 have already been answered here!

From to the pain, chapter 4 (not quite a spoiler though, unless for some reason you didn’t know they would end up kissing at some point 😜):

“Edwin laps into Charles’ mouth like it’s holding the secret to life itself. It’s messy and wild and deliciously unskilled, and something possessive inside Charles goes that’s right, because Edwin didn’t get to kiss very many people, did he? This is him learning as he goes, licking and biting because he wants to rather than because he knows to, and Charles feels dizzy with how right it feels, Edwin on his lap and sharpening his skills, melting his inexperience in Charles’ mouth. ”

And I really like this bit from above all I want you to be warm, the little Christmas fic I just posted:

“Which is why Charles is in his boyfriend’s room on a Thursday evening, two days before the holidays, with said boyfriend looking dead fit in his neat but cozy-looking jumper. And Charles should currently be snogging him into oblivion, but what is he doing instead? He’s studying up on functions. (He did try to lure Edwin in for a bit of a snog earlier, but Edwin was adamant that Charles at least get his first round of revision done first. As incentive, he said, with his gorgeous eyebrows lifted challengingly—which was really hot and definitely worked, even as Charles groaned in protest, mostly out of principle, really, because he can’t start looking happy when Edwin won’t kiss him, can he?)”

It just makes me smile every time I see it. 😊
