What We Learned from Flying a Helicopter on Mars
Tumblr media
The Ingenuity Mars Helicopter made history – not only as the first aircraft to perform powered, controlled flight on another world – but also for exceeding expectations, pushing the limits, and setting the stage for future NASA aerial exploration of other worlds.
Built as a technology demonstration designed to perform up to five experimental test flights over 30 days, Ingenuity performed flight operations from the Martian surface for almost three years. The helicopter ended its mission on Jan. 25, 2024, after sustaining damage to its rotor blades during its 72nd flight.
So, what did we learn from this small but mighty helicopter?
We can fly rotorcraft in the thin atmosphere of other planets.
Ingenuity proved that powered, controlled flight is possible on other worlds when it took to the Martian skies for the first time on April 19, 2021.
Flying on planets like Mars is no easy feat: The Red Planet has a significantly lower gravity – one-third that of Earth’s – and an extremely thin atmosphere, with only 1% the pressure at the surface compared to our planet. This means there are relatively few air molecules with which Ingenuity’s two 4-foot-wide (1.2-meter-wide) rotor blades can interact to achieve flight.
Ingenuity performed several flights dedicated to understanding key aerodynamic effects and how they interact with the structure and control system of the helicopter, providing us with a treasure-trove of data on how aircraft fly in the Martian atmosphere.
Now, we can use this knowledge to directly improve performance and reduce risk on future planetary aerial vehicles.
Tumblr media
Creative solutions and “ingenuity” kept the helicopter flying longer than expected.
Over an extended mission that lasted for almost 1,000 Martian days (more than 33 times longer than originally planned), Ingenuity was upgraded with the ability to autonomously choose landing sites in treacherous terrain, dealt with a dead sensor, dusted itself off after dust storms, operated from 48 different airfields, performed three emergency landings, and survived a frigid Martian winter.
Fun fact: To keep costs low, the helicopter contained many off-the-shelf-commercial parts from the smartphone industry - parts that had never been tested in deep space. Those parts also surpassed expectations, proving durable throughout Ingenuity’s extended mission, and can inform future budget-conscious hardware solutions.
Tumblr media
There is value in adding an aerial dimension to interplanetary surface missions.
Ingenuity traveled to Mars on the belly of the Perseverance rover, which served as the communications relay for Ingenuity and, therefore, was its constant companion. The helicopter also proved itself a helpful scout to the rover.
After its initial five flights in 2021, Ingenuity transitioned to an “operations demonstration,” serving as Perseverance’s eyes in the sky as it scouted science targets, potential rover routes, and inaccessible features, while also capturing stereo images for digital elevation maps.
Airborne assets like Ingenuity unlock a new dimension of exploration on Mars that we did not yet have – providing more pixels per meter of resolution for imaging than an orbiter and exploring locations a rover cannot reach.
Tumblr media
Tech demos can pay off big time.
Ingenuity was flown as a technology demonstration payload on the Mars 2020 mission, and was a high risk, high reward, low-cost endeavor that paid off big. The data collected by the helicopter will be analyzed for years to come and will benefit future Mars and other planetary missions.
Just as the Sojourner rover led to the MER-class (Spirit and Opportunity) rovers, and the MSL-class (Curiosity and Perseverance) rovers, the team believes Ingenuity’s success will lead to future fleets of aircraft at Mars.
In general, NASA’s Technology Demonstration Missions test and advance new technologies, and then transition those capabilities to NASA missions, industry, and other government agencies. Chosen technologies are thoroughly ground- and flight-tested in relevant operating environments — reducing risks to future flight missions, gaining operational heritage and continuing NASA’s long history as a technological leader.

You can fall in love with robots on another planet.
Following in the tracks of beloved Martian rovers, the Ingenuity Mars Helicopter built up a worldwide fanbase. The Ingenuity team and public awaited every single flight with anticipation, awe, humor, and hope.

The Ingenuity Rover's Helicopter, nicknamed Ginny, is broken and alone
Tumblr media
"In this most recent photo of Ingenuity, the dual-rotor 'copter can be seen motionless on a sandy dune in the background, as a barren, rocky Mars landscape fills the foreground.
The photo was taken on Feb. 4, 2024, at 1:05 p.m. local mean solar time, a little over two weeks since it suffered its mission-ending damage.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
NASA and JPL's Ingenuity helicopter on the surface of Mars as seen by the Perseverance rover's Mastcam-Z camera on Feb. 4, 2024.
Ingenuity suffered damage to its rotors during a flight on Jan. 18 as it made a landing on a featureless, "bland" patch of sandy Martian landscape. The helicopter usually makes use of landscape features such as rocks to help it navigate, but its 72nd flight found the drone without visual cues.
The Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) is still analyzing the damage to Ingenuity's blades, but regardless of what JPL finds, the helicopter's mission has officially come to an end now that it's no longer capable of flight.
Ingenuity landed alongside its robotic companion, the Perseverance rover, on Feb. 18, 2021. When it took to the Martian skies in April 2021, Ingenuity made history by conducting the first flight of a powered aircraft on another planet.
The Ingenuity-Perseverance duo has been exploring an area known as Jezero Crater ever since, discovering signs of ancient bodies of water on the Red Planet that may have once harbored life billions of years ago. Ingenuity served as a scout for Perseverance, identifying areas of interest for the rover to explore.
In recent weeks as NASA and JPL have been coming to terms with the end of Ingenuity's groundbreaking mission, agency leaders have praised the helicopter and the teams behind it.
'We couldn't be prouder or happier with how our little baby has done,' said Teddy Tzanetos, Ingenuity Project Manager at JPL, during a livestreamed tribute to the helicopter on Jan. 31. 'It's been the mission of a lifetime for all of us. And I wanted to say thank you to all of the people here that gave their weekends, their late nights. All the engineers, the aerodynamic scientists, the technicians who hand-crafted this aircraft.'
Tiffany Morgan, NASA's Mars Exploration Program Deputy Director, added that Ingenuity leaves behind a legacy that could pave the way for future aerial missions on other worlds.
Tumblr media
This image, which shows the shadow of a damaged rotor on NASA's Mars helicopter Ingenuity, was taken after its 72nd and final flight on Jan. 18, 2024 on the Red Planet.
'The NASA JPL team didn't just demonstrate the technology, they demonstrated an approach that if we use in the future will really help us to explore other planets and be as awe-inspiring, as amazing, as Ingenuity has been,' Morgan said during the livestream.
NASA is already developing another drone destined for another world, the nuclear-powered Dragonfly, to someday explore Saturn's largest moon, Titan. The agency expects Dragonfly to launch no earlier than 2028."

This feels like a circus au
Soap gets his adrenalin rush on the bike
Ghost does acrobatics and enters the cage
Price could be the ringmaster
I think Gaz would fit as a contorter
Maybe have Roach do escapology
Laswell would be in charge of everything
I don't know about any more
Dude dude dude dude dude OHMUHGUH
The gentle hand of the waist ahshshbsjskxh
Soap doing dangerous cage stunts on his bike, Ghost who does aerial acrobatics (i just like the idea of big man in the air lmao) during special shows pops into the cage and helps soap demonstrate some of the more flashy tricks
Price is the charming ringmaster who directs everyone's attention, making jokes, he's not often thought of as a crowd favorite (not that he wants that) but he is ESSENTIAL to the act.
Gaz demonstrating locking Roach into the box cage with a bucket of "lava" (red slime) perched overtop, ready to be dumped upon the timers end.
Gaz is a moving act, going wherever his talent gets to be shown off the best, often times with Roach, but occasionally Ghost as well.
And Laswell is so so so important to all the behind the scenes, she keeps everything moving and in line. She is legal team and marketing and finances. They would literally fall apart without her.

In press conference, Euro-Med confirms Israel's full involvement in Gaza flour massacre
Palestinian territory -  Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor confirmed that its initial investigations into the flour massacre at the “Nabulsi” roundabout southwest of Gaza City against Palestinian civilians who were attempting to receive humanitarian aid at dawn on Thursday confirm Israel’s full involvement in the crime, calling for an effective international investigation to hold Israeli officials accountable. During a press conference held in Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza, Euro-Med shared the findings of its initial investigation into the incident and the testimonies of the victims amid the Israeli army’s attempts to distance itself from the incident by arguing that the victims' deaths were due to a stampede. At the conference, Euro-Med researcher Muhammad Qariqa said that the Geneva-based organisation’s field team - which was present at the time of the incident - documented Israeli tanks firing heavily towards Palestinian civilians while trying to receive humanitarian aid at the “Nabulsi” roundabout. He explained that the Israeli attack left 115 civilians killed and 760 others injured, while many victims are believed to remain in the targeted area. Qariqi highlighted that the Euro-Med findings demonstrate that dozens of victims suffered gunshot wounds, rather than being run over or crushed, in contrast to what the Israeli army spokesman claimed. He further highlighted four pieces of evidence confirming the Israeli army’s involvement in killing and wounding starving civilians. The first of which is the signs of injuries on the bodies of the dead and injured. The second piece of evidence is the footage released by the Israeli army itself, which includes audible evidence of gunfire emanating from Israeli tanks positioned near the coast, in addition to the aerial video published by the Israeli army, which is intentionally fragmented and distorted. At minute 1:06, however, the video footage does indicate the existence of at least two Israeli tanks, as well as multiple bodies, in the path of the tanks rather than the aid trucks.

Derek is athletic, right? He loves to run and exercise and he played for the high school's basketball team. But to keep fit and fight while doing backflips and such tricks he has to stretch, too, at least as a warm-up. (Knowing Derek, he probably goes full out, though.)
So imagine the first time Stiles discovers that Derek Hale is actually flexible. I think it could go two ways:
It's either while Derek is drunk off wolfsbane-laced booze and accidentally blurts out that Laura used to make him practice with her for the cheerleader squad, so now obviously the pack pressures him into showing them the choreo and Derek absolutely nails it (even if he's a bit wobbly) and out of nowhere just ends the whole dance with him going into a full split. Or it's during your run-of-the-mill fight when he needs to dodge arrows by doing acrobatic shit you'd see in movies while the protagonist moves in slow motion. Stiles definitely stares. Jaw dropped and everything.
The other option is that maybe Stiles doesn't see it but he hears accounts of it. Like, Erica one day spends the whole lunch break complaining about how hard the werewolf training is when Derek makes doing a backbend kickover look so easy. Or Scott mentions how big of a show off Derek is by aerial cartwheeling his way over a brook in the woods while on their morning run. And it completely baffles Stiles because Derek looks more like a brick wall to him, but okay.
Curiosity eventually wins over, though, and Stiles sets out on a mission to get Derek to somehow use his supposed "flexibility of a pornstar" around him but no matter how hard he tries, Stiles never seems to succeed in being an actual witness to it, not even a sneak peek.
This goes on until one day, Derek creeps up behind him and whispers into his ear in an unusually low voice: "You could have just asked me to show you."
And Stiles nearly gets a heart attack right then and there but he should have really gotten used to Derek's surprise visits by now.
"What?" Stiles asks dumbly because Derek hasn't shaved in a while and he's tempted to reach out and feel the scratchiness of the man's facial hair, okay? It's a normal desire to have.
"You don't believe I'm flexible," Derek explains as if Stiles had any problems deciphering his own thoughts, which he didn't, thank you very much, but how did Derek know about it anyway?
Stiles doesn't have time to freak out about Derek's possible mind-reading abilities because he's almost going cross-eyed by how close Derek is suddenly to him and he's breathing in the smell of Derek's shampoo, and wow, when did he back up into the wall?
"If you want to," Derek licks his lips and Stiles almost misses his next words while not-so-subtly following the movement with his eyes, "I could give you a hands-on demonstration."
And Stiles' brain might have to be rebooted after such a blatant come-on, mostly because Derek doesn't do flirting, especially not with Stiles, but the boy's head still moves up and down in a frantic nod as Derek's soft-looking lips stretch into a tentative smile.
A few hours later and Stiles has absolutely no doubts about Derek Hale being flexible. Holy shit.

…Do the residents of Serene Village ever realize that the Hero and Partner officially become “Junior Expedition Society” members? Partner was always hung-ho about dungeon crawling in Mystery Dungeons. Ever since Hero became friends with them, the troublemaker of Serene Village had calmed down considerably. Yet does anyone ever take the time to notice these two kids (one only in mind) are actually helping other Pokémon. Fighting outlaws and challengers, rescuing lost Pokémon.
The very second mission for the Connection Orb is helping Axew fight Salamence! Does Serene Village receive a sudden increase in travelers cause they’re helping out? Kecleon, Hawlucha, and Kangaskhan surely know what’s going on since they directly help the two. Add in the Hero being the same human from past three times the world was in crisis. So Hydreigon recognizing them is just ignored?
It’d be really hilarious if during one of the school trips/demonstrations that Watchog offers to be the opponent in the exercise. The Hero and Partner duo fight him who’s underestimated the two… Only for the daily dungeon crawling to reveal both Pokémon are pretty strong for two kids. Like, they both know how to avoid looking at Watchog’s hypnotic stripes. Hero even knows quite a few “egg moves” for their species and has a hidden mean streak when it comes to being the team leader. The type of tactics they come up with? Pretty brutal.
Putting concentrated spores in a jar for later use, has fire type Partner’s target the ground under an opponents feet, condensed water type moves that pressure wash the scales off Gabite, using psychic moves to make enemies overshoot charging, using aerial ace to mince any nearby rocks to barely inch wide cubes, a steam explosion attack in a cave. Asking the local bug types to give them some String shot so they can make a rope that sticks Blast Seeds onto an opponent and let the chaos begin.
Blast Seed rope is so sticky that any bump detonates them, any stray attack causes the seeds to explode—repeatedly. The residents blame Nuzleaf’s secondary dark type for raising such a cunning mentality in a freaking kid! Hero may reign in the Partner’s enthusiasm, but they are just as scheming only quieter.
oh my GOD YES
hero using their wits and knowledge to become a powerful team with partner and partner is just happy to help
when everyone in serene village DOES find out about the things they've done and the stuff they've come up with, they do blame nuzleaf
and nuzleaf just ??????????? no????? I don't think so at least????

// CN SERVER SPOILERS, CN HALLOWEEN MR EVENT
hey. im now thinking abt harpy!luke doing stuff that real birds do
Tumblr media Tumblr media
b4 i list down actual bird (heh) features/abilities to copy paste onto luke tho, some unrelated but nonetheless avian adjacent notes abt luke's design i wanted to point out
i must commend the tot art team for not being cowards. i.e., they committed to the harpy bit and gave him TALONS AS FEETSIES!!!!
i think this is a nice detail cuz upon further review, it seems luke doesnt have clawed hands (as opposed to dragon!marius and mer!vyn who do). luke's pre-installed knives are in his feetsies
(but he decided to have an actual knife too in his hand. overkill much, luke? sdjhfjsfgg his middle name is 'hypervigilant protector')
idk how to describe this bc i dont have a GIF of harpy!luke but how he moves is SO BIRD-LIKE....how he brings his wings close to himself and theres this twitch-shiver-ruffle kind of movement, it's So Very Avian to me so like, huge kudos for whoever designed and animated luke. this is a birdman, it is clear as day
OKAY NOW ONTO BIRD TRAITS!!!
-
HEAD STABILIZATION
Tumblr media
this trait is seen among many bird species and it's so that they can keep their sight steady even when in aerial motion
head stabilization is important in birds of prey specifically so they can accurately lock onto their targets with their sharp vision and Keep Them In Their Vision to actually kill them. very badass.
but also fun and silly looking when demonstrated in less hunting-y way like in this GIF
in conclusion: imagine harpy!luke being slightly moved from side to side and his head just Does Not Move
-
TALON STRENGTH
talons (especially ones on large birds of prey) are strong. they can crush bone. like, look at this
Tumblr media
killing MACHINE
the above is from the harpy eagle (considered to be the most powerful eagle on the planet), and through even just sheer size, it's not hard to think about how these talons can kill. in strength tho, it can exert approx 110lbs~ of pressure. for reference, to break a human femur (the thickest bone in the human body), you would need 160lbs~ of pressure force. the harpy eagle is already not that far behind, in being able to break a femur. pretty sure it can break the thinner bones tho.
now, talons scaled up to a humanoid-harpy size would be even deadlier, methinks. which is why it's slightly silly to me that luke even HAS a dagger when hes got those BIG KNIFE FEETS
in conclusion: yknow the high kick luke does in his 2nd bday ssr? imagine that but happening in the Air and also he's a harpy and he just snapped something's neck with his talons
-
ok enough about murder, this last one's a cute one
FEATHER RUFFLIES
Tumblr media
birds can ruffle their feathers for a lot of reasons, but many do this to keep warm. more air between the feathers, more insulation for heat, nice warm happy bird :')
also, they end up looking So Much Fluffier and Softer
in conclusion: badass hunting harpy!luke? when it gets cold, he wraps his wings around himself and ruffles up his feathers. when hes like this, it's the best time to go in for a hug as well cuz he can just let that person into the embrace of his wings. absolutely ensconced in warmth and softness
-
this post is a mess and a half but i had a lot of feelings and no braincells abt it okay jhvjVKJHSFS

Precure Memories: The older girls
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
These two. I need to talk about these two goobers as a pair. Because they are a pair (now I've got Connect's design sorted out hopefully for good this time). And they're the two slightly older cures in the Precure Memories team
On the left is Kazumi, Cure Serene. Who's anything but. I've talked a bit about her before. She's a martial artist, but can get a bit...carried away sometimes. She's very cartoonish in her fighting as a Cure. Literally follows the cartoon rules when attacking if they don't change her form proportions. Big and bold, and in your face. Bells (Bell item) and sand. She can actually swim in sand in cure form if need be- like I said: cartoon rules. She punches people by punching an oversized bell into their face. She has another attack that is just her disappearing through a door and then fighting sound effects coming through the door. SHE CAN EVEN PULL OFF THE FAKE TUNNEL AND WHERE'S GRAVITY STANDING ON THIN AIR BITS. CARTOON. MAGIC. MAGICAL GIRL. THIS GIRL IS RIDICULOUS AND I LOVE HER. In her day-to-day life, she's a struggling competitive judoka, who is trying to keep her place at the school and overcome a series of defeats. Her little sister is ill, and up country with some more distant relatives, so Kazumi is fairly lonely at the start of the series, and trying to work out her emotions through physical violence exercise. Which goes about as well as you'd expect.
On the right is Chuchuski. Yes that is a nickname. Her actual name is Taylor, but the nickname stuck thanks to Kazumi's little sister mis-pronouncing her actual surname Tchaikovsky, and being far too cute about it for Taylor to correct her. So she just went with it, and now everyone knows her as Chuchuski. She's the more standoffish of the two. When she's at school and doesn't want to be interrupted when studying or something, she'll wear a mouse ears hairband, and people know to leave her alone (be as quiet as a...). Kinda useful as she is also the current student council president, and is in high demand otherwise. She is quite serious, and a hard worker. She's also fairly perceptive, even if she isn't the most chatty person. She also squeaks when jumped/surprised, which Kazumi likes to demonstrate now and then, much to her chargrin. She is Cure Connect. Her theme is nautical, especially sailing, "dancing between the sea, the sun, and the stars." She loves the sea, sailing, and ribbon dancing (incl aerial silks, the acrobatic one). Sundial item- literally just a triangle of metal, but it grows into a sail to start her transformation, and can also be used as a brooch or nail to fix the top of her outfit sail like a grappling hook. It sometimes even becomes a surfboard. Sails and sea theme. The big white sash across her front can and does magically become a sail which she can manipulate easily with flowing dancing moves, and even throw it into magical attacks (regenerating another one for rapid-fire). She has lots of flowing movements. Also some other sailing and surfing moves as well (she is obsessed with the sea irl, at one point even to such an unhealthy level that she was boarded so far inland so she could focus enough to study.) Cure hairstyle is lots of tightly gathered braids. (But a single rattail in civvy form)
These two are friends in a way that almost seems to not be, the way they know each other so well. Their relationship is in a bit of a rocky patch at the start of the series, but Chuchuski knows it's just because of some of the things Kazumi is going through, and is working in other ways to help her friend get through it. She is the one who asked the headmaster to transfer Suzuki to their school to try and help cheer her up (Kazumi knew her when she was a little younger, in a big-sister way). She keeps an eye on them, even when they don't know she's helping. She doesn't need them to know. Kazumi, once she gets over her initial season coldness towards Chuchuski, is good friends, and is just about the only person who will happily rib the student council president. In fact, she makes a delighted point of doing so. Kazumi is quite the joker.
Connect's sail does have a more clean straight lined edge, and will magically float up behind her head when filled, usually when feeling magically or emotionally pumped up (it can also droop with fatigue, or emotion, or after a particularly heavy beatdown). It tends to dramatically frame her head with a sharp triangle sail shape.
Cure Serene can swim in sand.
She absolutely grabs Connect at least once to join her and sneak up on someone with her sail acting as a fake shark fin. Connect protests ofc, but she can't help herself being dragged along because she knows how insistent Kazumi can be. Chuchuski does know the difference between the "this'll be fun" harmless fun and the "this'll be fun" "Kazumi NO! That is a WAR CRIME!" and oh shit I'm going to have to stop you punching someone you shouldn't.
Basically Chuchuski acts as Kazumi's voice of reason, otherwise she will let her heart and head get away with her.
These two have a joint attack called Happy Days, and it's entirely wedding themed, with them as the couple. I'm not saying they're a couple, but if Rikka and Mana are wives, these two are twenty years married with kids. They may not be the most outwardly romantic pair, but they still care a lot for each other, and that shows in their actions in many little ways.
Quirks of their magic: Thanks to the slightly physics-defying of their magic, the memory cures can approach problems slightly differently to other cures. If they come up against a tall cliff, Memory would climb it (just likes climbing a lot), Serene would race her (metal hands able to grip), Connect would use her sail as a grappling hook and climb that, Express would use her gear to create a little mechanical elevator type thing to ride up the cliff, and Reverie would sigh, make a comment about them overcomplicating everything, before drawing a doorway with her pen that somehow miraculously opens up a route straight to the top.
Of course any of the others cures would probably just jump straight up. The most obvious solution isn't always the first one these five go for.
I've mentioned Connect climbing the sail like an acrobat- she does that the other way as well. I can imagine her charging off a cliff to try and save a falling Serene, only to stop the other end, upside down wrapped in the silk held up just short of the ground when it turns out that Serene took a safe landing in some sand she summoned.
Connect is just hanging there waiting for her to resurface and being very unimpressed and judgemental that her emergency rescue attempt had been so unnecessary. And Serene just pops up half out the sand, fluttering her eyes, propped up on her elbows like some casual swimmer, Definitely Not Flirting as she winds Connect up and completely ignoring the fact that she's in sand and that Connect's doing a spiderman.
Once Connect has joined the team and they're all there, they find that collectively they have the ability to summon a flying ship. Memory (trees) creates the planks, Connect the sails, Express the rudder and wheel, Serene the ships bell, and Reverie the wings and magical doodling bits in between. It impresses the other cures at the all stars meets, and is particularly useful for travelling between magical worlds.
At some point the team get a sixth cure, who I'm keeping under wraps, but at this point she'd be the one on the megaphone "Good afternoon everyone, this is your Captain speaking. Welcome aboard the Happy Memory. Please pay attention to any safety announcements, and make sure to keep your hands, items, and fairies within the decks at all times. We hope you have a pleasant flight!" She immediately gets grabbed by Connect's sailcloth, wrapped up and pinned to the front of the ship as a figurehead. "Hey! No, wait!"
Connect: "Show of hands who wants me to be Captain?" The rest of the memory cures immediately stick their hands up with a "yeah!". 6th cure over the bow somewhere: "This is mutiny!" She continues to protest but everyone just gets on with it, leaving her there to stew. This is Connect's ship after all.
Each of the Memory cures is related to one or more styles of timekeeping device:
Cure Memory: Trees and seasons
Cure Reverie: Calendars, diaries and candle clocks
Cure Express: Mechanical clocks and watches
Cure Serene: Sand timers, (also clock bells)
Cure Connect: Sundials, sun and stars, and water clocks
Their attacks also relate to things that make happy memories:
Memory: Funfair, theme park. Has a rollercoaster themed purification attack.
Reverie: Dreams and stories. Fantasy
Express: Toys and joy
Serene: Cartoon entertainment
Connect: Fun, sea and sun, watersports, and that sense of freedom
Sixth ranger: Food, and sweets.

Patri Guijarro: 7.5
Patri Guijarro intercepted balls effectively and worked tirelessly to regain possession for the team in the opposition half. Although she didn't see much of the ball to influence the game significantly, Guijarro held her own in her position. Guijarro's performance was solid, considering her limited time on the ball.
