To say that Idia was traumatized by the sudden exposure is an understatement. But after calming down, he can't help but think on how similarly [Name] acts with one of the characters in the anime he watched. Cough Moriarty the Patriot cough. But nonetheless, the two of them soon bonded and became close with one another.

Before long, [Name] was introduced to Ortho and his interest was immediately peeked by Idia's "younger brother."

Although school life is as boring as his world's. It's just the same thing but with magic and stuff... but all of a sudden these things called "Overblot" showed up? Oh he got to know what this is about right away!

Idia thought that his room is messy but this is just on another level!

Newspapers, printed out articles, [Name] own illedgiment handwriting, etc. Every single wall is covered in it with some strings connecting some parts.

Why did it happen? Is it because of intense emotions? Negative or positive? Does it really matter? And why do they show up in a blob, ink-like thing? The stain on the gems of their pens? Is this common? Or are they something one has to go through once in their lives? Like puberty? So many questions. So little time.

Idia could only sit and watch as [Name] drove himself insane. He knew that S.T.Y.X. is also trying to figure this whole Overblot out too. But seeing how unhinged [Name]'s acting while also trying to figure out the same thing his family is doing is just concerning. It drove Idia to the edge just how... [Name]'s acting..

There's a thin line between inquiry and insanity. And [Name] is using that line like a freaking jump rope!

Whenever he saw [Name] pacing around like a mad man. Ortho tries to help by either reducing [Name]'s burden and helping him to make deductions and hypotheses or by simply bringing snacks and reminding him to rest.

While Idia looks at [Name] with a nervous and unsure expression. Ortho steps in by suggesting that maybe he should rest. "[Name] maybe you should take a nap! If you do, your productivity will go up by 10℅ or maybe even more! And since you're energized, you could be more focused and—"

"I'll rest once I've figured this out."

what do you recommend for people who are very new to deadpool comics and looking to get into them?

hiii thank u for asking!! this is kind of a complicated question because there's no right answer really. especially with deadpool, there's no actual best starting point because besides the basic origin story that he was experimented on, everything else about him is fair game (he just lies all the time and has false memories about his past) and so all the comics are different, although some are connected. but here's a list of a few comics depending on what you want to explore (i have not read every deadpool comic ever so this is not the best list but i will get there):

for shorter and more lighthearted reads:

deadpool (2022)—SO so cute wade has a crush on this non-binary assassin and it's actually adorable how much he likes them lol. in terms of shorter deadpool comics i think this one is quite a standout [update: the ongoing deadpool (2024) is brilliant as well and is a direct more in-depth continuation of this]

deadpool infinity comic (2021)—a short partnership with sue storm. funny and the art style is so cute too

deadpool (2018) #6—the issues in this run are all kinda standalone stories (although they all connect at the end). they're all a fun time but this issue in particular is hilarious. comics usually don't make me actually laugh but this one did

for a more meta read that explores exactly what makes wade unique from other superheroes:

deadpool (2012)—if you've been following me you might know this is my favourite deadpool comic ever. it's pretty depressing and much grittier than the movie deadpool you might be used to, also REALLY long so it can be daunting but it's very worth it imo. it starts to get really good by the good, the bad, and the ugly issue and there's just SO much in it. for me wade in this run is inseparable from wade as a character to me (this comic is also followed up with deadpool (2015) and despicable deadpool (2017). these aren't necessary to read because 2012 kind of wraps up on its own, but it's definitely bittersweet to get to the end)

deadpool (1997)—another hulk of a comic run. i have not read this yet but i've heard very good things about it, and many people say that joe kelly is the defining deadpool writer so you could give it a go! older comics may be a little harder to read though, from experience

Hey! You're tutorial on drawing burn scars was really helpful. I've been trying to draw burns for a while and I could just never find a tutorial for drawing them, especially not one that showcased burns on multiple skin colors.

I have a question though, and I'm not entirely sure if you'll be able to answer it or point me at a good resource, but I figured I'd ask anyways.

In the guide you have some different types of burn scars listed (hypertrophic, keloid, and contracture). Do you know what causes each type to scar differently? Is it the severity of the burn? Or something else.

Hi! Fair question!

As for the severity: 1st degree burns very rarely leave anything behind after they heal and if they do it's usually mild skin discoloration. 2nd degree sometimes leaves some scarring but it usually fades away after some time since it's partial thickness, but deeper 2nd degree burns can cause permanent scarring that'll generally be less severe than those caused by higher degrees and mostly be hypertrophic. Third degree basically always leaves scars of all kinds. There might be tissue loss, so parts like ears or nose can be gone. Fourth degree is defined as going all the way to the bone, so the place with the burn will often be amputated because well it's just bone left. In this way it doesn't really leave scars I guess? But the area that's left will usually have severe scarring of basically any type.

For location: Hypertrophic scars happen wherever but are more common in places where skin is tight rather than loose. Pressure garments are used to prevent the hypertrophy so if for example your character wore compression sleeves as prescribed on their arms but nothing on their chest, the scars would probably be much more visible (more thick, discolored, and probably more painful as well) on their chest.

Keloids tend to form on the shoulders, cheeks, chest, and most commonly ears, but there is not much room to get a keloid there when it comes to burns - often if there is enough damage for them to scar, there will be tissue loss first. Keloids also happen more often in people with darker skin because their formation has something to do with melanocytes. Some people are also just more susceptible to getting keloids and if you have one you have a higher chance of getting another. Because of this keloids are rarely removed because they tend to just come back.

Contracture scars tend to happen where regular contractions do - where things move around a lot. So joints, facial and neck muscles, and especially digits. Contractures get less visible with physical therapy, wearing things like splints, or surgeries (like z-plasty or just skin grafts/flaps) that loosen them up and/or allow for more range of movement.

Ofc this is more of a rough guideline than anything else, every scar can potentially form anywhere and from anything (I'm just mentioning what's the Most Typical) and it depends on what resources someone has available to them. I have scars on my torso that according to this theory would have a high chance of being keloids (none of them are) and two on my hand that shouldn't have turned into scars at all (but they did) and they're hypertrophic for some reason. So I'd keep it in mind but don't stress about it 👍

B. Katsuki x Reader!

Katsuki hates it when you get sick, not only means he can’t kiss you. But he’s not sure if he wants to touch you all that much because if you get him sick it could could precious time off of training.

Of course the boy wants you to feel better and if you’re really sick then he wants to help you. So what he does is cook homemade soup, nothing too heavy so you don’t get a stomach ache.

Maybe some simple rice pudding, or plain chicken soup with rice. He makes sure you’re resting at all times and not staying up late.

Katsuki wants you to get better as soon as possible so he can kiss you. Let’s say you’ve been sick for 2 days, Katsuki feels like he’s going crazy. He craves your touch so much it’s like an itch.

He almost kisses you multiple times while he’s taking care of you. I mean he’s a clingy guy he needs you.

When he’s in class he’s trying to text you whenever he can! Making sure you’re okay, telling you he left tupawares of soup in your fridge. Texting you whenever you need to take medicine.

If you were super sick, katsuki would debate staying home to take care of you, or school. Of course he chooses you.

I feel like katsuki would try to sanitize everything as soon as possible, trying not to let you get up to touch anything. He doesn’t want the germs staying around to get his favorite person sick again.

Katsuki misses you when you’re sick. It’s not the same in class without you around, when you were around everything felt more comfortable and natural. This causes katsuki to get more irritable, and people can definitely tell.

“Hey Baku-“ immediately Katsuki’s red-haired friend was cut off by Katsuki’s irritated shout.

“The hell ya want shitty hair!?” Katsuki didn’t want anyone to bother him.

“I just wanted to ask if you wanted to partner up…what’s gotten into you?” Kirishima question, already sort of knowing the answer.

He ended up partnering with Kirishima…let’s just say the other teams didn’t have a lot of fun. With Katsuki putting all his worry and anger into this training.

When you’re finally better everything goes back to normal! Except katsuki tries to keep you away from things that’ll get you sick but you eventually get him to knock it off cause he was stopping you from doing basic things.

Hi! I have a few questions regarding the mechanics of the story: At what what percentage would someone be considered a friend? Are there negative friendship/romance percentages? or is the lowest zero? Also, when playing, I noticed that the moment we meet Dean, the romance is at 3%, while friendship is at 0%, is that intentional? Finally, How does having high percentages for multiple characters work? like friendship i think should be fine, but romance, outside of Edmund and Veronica, would there be some sort of romance-lock in the future? Hey, no problem!

I don't think there's an exact percentage at which a character could be considered a friend in mind currently but if I have to quantify it I'd likely break it into stages, so by 15% you could consider a character to be a distant friend.

There shouldn't be negative percentages as the lowest each character’s friendship could be able to get is 0%.

Yes, it is intentional that a character can have a different romance and friendship, really they're misnomers as friendship as far as I'm concerned as the author they’re just ways for me to eventually begin restricting certain routes that’ll need certain percentages and giving player interactions a little more variation based on past interactions.

As of now, my plan is eventually to do a romance-lock but there’ll be plenty of time to build up romance and friendship with the ROs before such a time especially as the next chapter will be dedicated to building interpersonal relationships. A romance-lock later on will just make it easier to tell the different interpersonal stories that will go on (eg. Someone on the Kent romantic route will have a drastically different experience than someone romancing Dean for example in terms of where they’ll be and who they’ll be interacting with and what choices they’ll face).

The top layer Neo, is the one you will enter upon arrival and is for everyone! It's got arcades, street performers, food venues of all kinds, a castle, theme park, circus, clubs, and a massive area where Entertainment Dules are held!

Entertainment Dules are a duel unique to New Neo Cavern because you're goal is not to beat your opponent, it's to score the most points!

You can score points by doing several things, such as:

Preforming Combo Shots (100 - 5000 points based on complexity)

Preforming Trick Shots (100 - 5000 points based on complexity)

Pulling off Flashy Moves (100 - 2000 points based on complexity)

Pulling off Daring Moves (100 - 2000 points based on complexity)

Over all style (100 - 500 points)

Theme (when applicable) (100 - 500 points)

Cohesion of the routine (100 - 2000 points)

The most impactful kind of points to sore are audience points.

Every match, each audience member in attendance gets one vote to cast for whoever they felt performed the best, with the Stadium holding up to 50,000 guests.

note: Points for Combo Shots, Trick Shots, Flashy Moves and Daring Moves are stackable. by that I mean you can preform multiple of these moves and each and every one of them will be scored individually. Preforming the same move again however will result in it's second(and how ever else many times is preformed) score being lower then when it was first done. Verity is key.

Unlike regular tournaments, the loser dose not have to give the winner of the match one of their slugs.

Slugs and Entertainment Duelist train and work hard together to come up with their act, and just taking away one, or adding a slug that isn't familiar with the act could ruin it for both Duelist involved.

Governess Fay - She/Her, Elf: Head of New Neo Cavern. Former Pro Trick Shot duelist. Elegant, yet fierce, knows just about everything about everyone living in New Neo Cavern. Nothing truly every surprises her, as she is always twenty steps ahead.

Doc - She/Her, Cave Troll: One of many Doctors in New Neo, specializes in dealing with those with Head Trauma and Critical Injures. She works in Paleo, near The Pit. Former Member of the LOC.

Nikki - She/Her, Human : Trick Shot fashionista! Everything about this girl sparkles, literally. She has custom made Blaster Shell's that are pink and full of glitter. A former member of the LOC, current member of the LOT, can be found at The Pink Palace in Neo and runways, and Slug-Hubs that specialize in fashion, this makes her quit good at improvising. Currently dating Heresy.

Heresy - He/Him, Human : Punk Rock Goth Guy with an eye for detail, making him quite the sharp shooter. While he dose have a regular hand held Balster, he also has a Electric Guitar that can double as a Blaster as well! He can be found either in Paleo and Neo rocking out on stage or participating in Entertainment Dule's or interacting with the crowd, he's rather good a reading people. Current member of the LOC. Currently dating Nikki.

Mane - She/Her : A Jack of All Trades who excels in Trick Shots and is one of New Neo's up-in-coming in Entertainment Dules. She doesn't have a particular niche, preferring to act as a 'floater', need her for a mock stand off? an extra set of hands to help set up? or someone to man the bar? just hit her up and she'll somehow make it work! because of this she's got some weird knowledge and skills. You can find her around both Paleo and Neo hanging out when she's not busy. Current member of the LOC.

Ace - They/Them : The most unlucky individual you will ever meet! despite that they are a dare devil at heart! Despite all the odds being against them they will always get back up and some how pull off the more daring stunts even if they don't always end the way they are supposed too. Do to their unlucky status they are always looking on the bright side, and has a backup plan for just about everting! They can be found most often in Paleo, but will so stunt shows in Neo and in The Pink Palace. Currently a member of the LOC.

Ignis - He/Him : A Hot Shot Entertainment Duelist with a flair for the dramatics. Always up for a challenge, though he can be brash and overconfident at times. Loves anything to do with fire, so if you need a firework's display or just an explosion he is your guy. Can be found in Neo most often. Former member of the LOC, current member of the LOT.

All residents use a Stage Name!

Stage Names are a staple of the New Neo Cavern! Every resident has one or two! doesn't matter if you where born in New Neo or Moved in!

Stage Names to contrary belief tend to be embarrassing Nicknames!

Take Ace's Stage Name for example. While cool sounding, actually derives from the fact Ace, is actually the best at being the worst. They have terrible luck! If you where to have a most unlucky contest, they wouldn't even make last place

Other times some individuals are lucky to pick their Stage Names.

Take Heresy for example, that guy's a menace! a chaotic little gremlin who thrives on chaos!

And on rare occasions, Stage Names become Mantles, passed down from successor to successor or kept within the family.

Take Mane for example, She is officially the forth Mane! Her biological Grandmother, being the first, getting the Nickname 'Golden Mane' for her horrible bed head. Her father and aunt would also take up the Mantle of Mane, being the 'Untamed Mane' and 'Lustrous Mane' respectively, they also conveniently have bad bed head too. And our Mane, the current one, is known as the 'Wild Mane', and she also has bad bed head! [talk about consistency!]

As for 'Governess Fay' that is no Stage Name, Governess/Governor is the official tittle bestowed on the individual in charge of New Neo Cavern.

Governess Fay is the one currently in charge and she has been in charge for close to one hundred years, as an Elf she lives a longer life than most. Fay's old Stage Name before getting the title of Governess was Faywild, and she was and still is considered one of, if not the best Slinger in New Neo. After all she has had many years to prefect her skills.

[Visors system explanation + Visor pic]

The Visors are the main point of commination for all residents of New Neo Cavern.

The Visors are connected via what can only be described as a Cavern wide Hive Mind Network that allows everyone waring one to stay in touch, and informed. The New Neo Network Feed is customizable, so to avoid an information overload, it is recommended to tune the Feed to your preference, so info about events and things related to your primary profession and niche. With the only exception being the Emergency Line which is always open.

The Visors work by eye tracking, and the touch pads on the side of the Visors.

Resident's Visors can be physically customized to fit their vibe. They have the ability to message, take videos/pictures, upload/download files, make calls and even access the wider SlugNet.

There is a floor model that is sold to guest. these models are not connected to the Network. They have limited storage for downloadable music, and light up on the sides. however, a skilled Mechanic can mod these floor models to work like the official ones and access the SlugNet, to varying degrees of success.

Fun Fact: Friends and Allies from outside New Neo, are permitted to have custom made Visors as well, so long as the Governor/Governess approves!

[Rules/law of the cavern for both visitor/guests and Cavern Residents]

THE LOC & LOT

LOC - Lights Our Crew - This is basically the SWAT Team/Primary Cavern Law Enforcement of New Neo Cavern. Every single Resident of age must serve at least six months as a LOC member, and after six months are free to stay, or leave and join the LOT or detach completely, depending on the profession they choses to go into. for instance Doctors and Nurses are not on the LOC or LOT.

The LOC also function is a 'night shift' of sorts. By that I mean they rotate out with the LOT and take over basic management of Cavern operations on the day-to-day. LOC members can be out and about helping and participating in events during the LOT shift, and vice versa, as there is no restrictions, the main purpose of the Shift Change is to give members of both teams time to relax and recharge before deciding to be on the clock again.

LOT - Lights On Team - They run the day-to-day operations of New Neo Cavern. Making sure things are going well, interacting with guests, organizing events, keeping an eye out for trouble and so on.

Due to most LOT members having six or more months experience as LOC, they can take point on Cases until a LOC member is available or until the Case develops to the point a LOC member has to take over. These Cases usually mean active hostile who has critically harmed someone, drug bust, massive slug smuggling ect.

New Neo Cavern is large, and because of this some think they can run criminal operations under the Cavern Residents noises. the LOC and LOT are pivotal in not only keeping New Neo running, but making sure everyone is safe. This however dose mean that sometimes LOC/LOT members have to take, extreme measures, but that is only when all other options fail.

Descriptive writing hacks, anyone?

Hey writing humans? Can you all do me a huge favour?

Reblog this with your best DESCRIPTIVE WRITING tips, opinions, resources, and examples.

Please don't put anything related to character creation or plot development (unless its also about descriptive writing ofc). There are soooo many good resources for those. I want to give some love to descriptive writing because I think as writers we forget about this part sometimes.

I'll go first. Here's what I've got so far:

For resources, some of my favourites are Shaelin Writes and Reedsy on Youtube (she also has a blog), Hello Future Me on YouTube, and Hey Writers and Writing Questions Answered here on Tumblr.

As for tips, here we go:

General tips for description:

Give everything a face / the bigger the concept the smaller you write / focus on the little details

A description should serve multiple functions (mood, tone, atmosphere, foreshadowing, symbolism, characterization, theme, worldbuilding, hinting at backstory, advancing the plot etc.) / word choice matters; two words can mean the same thing but evoke different feelings or subtext

Weave description into action, dialogue, dialogue tags, and characters' thoughts

Describe only what the POV character knows, describe what they think of it (the later also applies to omniscient narrators)

Use the five senses

Be specific / Use precise language where it matters; you can still be vague about unimportant details like eye colour (unless eye colour is actually important to your story of course)

If a scene isn't working change the weather / use atmosphere to create contrast or call attention to the setting and the events of the scene.

Describe facial expressions, body language, how a character walks or carries themselves, important accessories they wear

Create a sense of place / describe where things are in relation to the characters (objects in the room, named roads or mountains, other characters, the ocean if they are by the sea, the direction of the wind, etc.)

Show time passing (shadows, position of the sun, wind changing, colour of the sky, bells ringing etc.)

General tips for stronger prose (not just description):

Use sentence length intentionally. Long sentences are slower to read, short sentences are quick; conversely, long sentences build tension, short sentences release it. Long sentences invoke a more formal, archaic tone while shorter sentences seem modern.

Use -ing verbs sparingly

Avoid vague words like some, really, and thing

Use "to be" verbs ("was" and "is") sparingly

Cut weasel words like basically, seems, sort of, like, and suddenly

Don't state the obvious. For example, the red apple, he held the apple in his hand, the tree stood at the end of the driveway beside the road, she stood up.

Cut filter words like saw, knew, realized, felt

Use active voice / Follow the "By Zombies" Rule

“Ughhh, why isn’t he answering?” You shouted into the living room.

Now is not the time for you to be this busy Eddie!!!

You thought about it a little while longer, debating calling Eddie again or calling someone else. That was when you decided to call Wayne.

“Hello?” Wayne answered gruffly.

“Hey Wayne, are you uh, are you busy right now?” You asked.

“Hey darlin’ is everything okay?” He questioned.

“Yeah, well not actually, Eddie isn’t answering his phone and I ugh…I need to go to the hospital.” You rambled.

“Okay, you hang tight, I will be there soon! Keep calling Eddie okay?”

With that, Wayne hung up the phone and made his way to the truck, ignoring most traffic laws in hopes to get to you as soon as he, legally, can.

Eddie Munson if you do not pick up your phone I SWEAR TO ALL THINGS HOLY!!!

Shit, shit, shit!!! Is it time? I’m on my way!!!

The last seven years had been a whirlwind. Eddie had proposed to you six months after you heard him tell Wayne he was going to, that was 1986.

It was now 1993, and things were completely different than when you met Eddie. Since then, your parents had retired and started going on cruises, which is where they happened to be now. Wayne still worked at the factory but had cut back on his hours to help you and Eddie out.

Eddie got a job at a local body shop, he had stopped dealing drugs because it wasn’t safe anymore, given the expansion of your family. You had gone to school and were now working as a nurse, taking after your mom.

Your parents had surprised you and Eddie after you got married by buying you a house, they had sold theirs and bought a trailer, close to Wayne’s seeing as they were travelling so much. The house they bought you was modest, a one story, three-bedroom, two bathroom. It had a nice grassy yard that allowed you to host your friends should you choose. It also had a basement which was perfect for Eddie to transform into the ultimate DND room.

You had been pregnant at the wedding, not that either of you had been aware of that fact. You had found out about a month later and in the fall of 1987 your first child was born.

Eddie and you had two beautiful children, a son, Ronnie 6, and a daughter, Vivian 3. Both are named after members of Dio. You were hesitant at first, but after Eddie really got you into metal music (especially Dio) you caved.

Which leads you to now, spring 1993, you were currently in labor with your twins. Naturally Eddie wasn’t answering his phone, he hadn’t even wanted to get a mobile phone, but you had convinced him when you found out the potential risks of a multiples pregnancy. With your parents on a ship somewhere in the Mexican Riviera, you had no other choice but to call Wayne.

A knock on the door shook you out of your thoughts. You waddled your way over to the door, just as Wayne let himself in.

“Thank you for coming Wayne!” You huffed.

Eddie you had better be at the hospital for this birth!

“Of course, kiddo. Where are the rugrats?” Wayne asked.

“They’re with Steve and Nancy today.” You explained as you gathered your things.

I’m on my way! Please be okay!

“You got everything you need?” Wayne asked.

“Uh yeah…” looking around one last time, “I think that’s everything.” You nodded.

Wayne reached for your bag and led you out to his truck. He opened your door for you and helped you up into the truck, refusing to leave your side until you were settled and buckled in. He finally made his way around to the driver’s side and started your journey to the hospital.

“Any word from the boy yet?” Wayne questioned.

“Not via phone if that’s what you’re asking” you took a sharp breath in “I can hear him internally panicking though.” You huffed out a laugh, trying to control your breathing.

As Wayne wheeled you into the hospital, a horde of your coworkers made their way to you. They were congratulating you, helping you get checked in, ensuring you were okay and honestly it was becoming a bit overwhelming. All you wanted was for Eddie to be by your side and for these babies to exit your womb.

Where are you?

I’m here, I’m here. Please don’t have the babies without me!

An OB nurse and Wayne walked with you to your room, Wayne began setting your things up around the room while the nurse got your vitals and those of the babies. While she did this, you could hear shoes scuffing along the linoleum floors.

“I’m here!” Eddie hollered, out of breath.

“Glad you could make it.” You bit. “Sorry, it’s the contractions talking.”

“It’s okay baby!” Eddie leaned over and kissed your forehead.

He walked over to assist Wayne in setting up the rest of your things. The two of you had made a list and were sure to pack all the things you wished you had during the last two births.

“I um, I got everything I need here. I’m just going to go get your doctor and I will be right back.” The nurse expressed wearily before making her exit.

She clearly didn’t read the chart and is concerned about Toni’s CHD.

Eddie let out a slight chuckle which caused Wayne to shoot him a questioning glance. Wayne let Eddie know he was going to go get a coffee and that he’d be in the waiting room. He also informed you guys that he would call your parents and your friends to inform them you were in labor.

“Hey you two! You ready to have these babies?” Your doctor asked as she entered your room.

“Hey Dr. Evans, and yes I am so ready for these two to be out of me!” You sighed.

“Well good, because by the looks of it, you shouldn’t have to wait too much longer.” Dr. Evans explained. “Also, I am sorry about the nurse earlier, she’s new, she doesn’t know you work here, or that you guys are more than aware of Toni’s congenital heart disease.”

“It’s okay!” You released a shaky breath as another contraction rolled through you.

“Can you explain it all to me again? I know we’ve gone over it, I just, I want to hear it again.” Eddie pleaded.

“Of course, so Toni has a tiny hole in her heart wall, so once she is out, our pediatric surgeon will take her to the operating room and repair it! Once it is all fixed up, she will be in the NICU for a little while, just while she heals and then she will be all set to go home and grow up! She will have to have regular checkups, but she’ll lead a relatively normal life.” Dr. Evans explained.

A hole in her heart, Jesus. She’s not even born and already her life is hard.

“Eds, honey she’s going to be okay. This is sadly more common than you’d think.”

Eddie placed his hand on your shoulder, appreciating your support. You looked up at him as another contraction ripped through you. You took a few more deep breaths, glancing over to Dr. Evans. She checked you once more and informed you that it was time.

Everything happened seemingly all at once. First out was Ozzy, he was taken over to be cleaned up and measured, next was Toni who was almost immediately taken to her surgery. Dr. Evans stitched you up (birthing twins was no joke…neither was the tearing that occurred) and congratulated you both. She also let you know that someone would be by to keep you updated on Toni’s status.

Eddie was sitting in the recliner holding Ozzy while you rested. Steve and Nancy were on their way with your kids, excited to meet the new additions to your family. Robin and Dustin called to let you know they’d be by soon and they were bringing you some real food.

A nurse stopped in to let you know that Toni was still in surgery, but it was going well, when you heard tiny feet slapping against the floor, growing in volume.

“Mommy!” Ronnie yelled, running to your bedside.

“Hey bug.” You reached your hand down to brush his curls back out of his face.

“Sorry! He’s so fast!” Steve apologized.

Steve lifted Ronnie and placed him at the foot of your bed, all the while Nancy was walking in with Vivian, who was fast asleep in her arms. She smiled at you and wished you congratulations and when her gaze landed on Eddie, she couldn’t help but coo at the sleeping baby resting on his chest.

Robin and Dustin entered moments later with a pizza, some soda, and a few gift bags in hand.

“Hey! Any word on Toni yet?” Robin asked as she wrapped you in a hug then made her way to poke at Ronnie, who burst into a fit of giggles.

“Uh not yet, the nurse just let us know that her surgery was going well.” Eddie explained.

The night seemed to drag, the food and good company was a nice distraction from the fact that your daughter’s tiny heart was being worked on. You were thankful for your friends, especially that they’d all been so willing to hang around until you heard more.

“Hey there” Dr, Evans popped her head in your room “I just wanted to let you know that Toni is out of surgery, she did great and is on her way to the NICU now! I can take you both over there if you’d like to see her?”

You glanced at your friends who all nodded in unison, their way of silently telling you to go and that they could watch Ronnie and Vivian. You smiled at them and allowed Eddie to help you into a wheelchair. Dustin gently handed Ozzy back to you and then Dr. Evans escorted you to the NICU.

“So don’t be alarmed, she’s hooked up to a few machines, but it is just to monitor her heart function and her vitals.” Dr. Evans stated, more so for Eddie than you.

Eddie pushed your chair over to the incubator that currently housed your daughter. You looked in at her, she was so tiny, there was a small bandage placed on her chest. Looking over at Dr. Evans, she nodded signaling it was okay for you to open the side panel and hold your baby.

You reached your left hand in while cradling Ozzy in your right. Eddie made his way around to the other side and reached in to hold Toni’s other hand.

She’s so beautiful, they both are.

You’re so beautiful. Thank you for making me a dad, again.

A tear slipped down your cheek. You were so incredibly happy to have Eddie by your side and four beautiful children. You couldn’t wait to be by their sides as they found love the same way you had with Eddie.

This life was such a gift, and you were so grateful for all of it.

Thank you for bringing light into my life. Thank you for loving me.

I've gotten several requests to both continue on what happens after that story, but also to tell the story of the reader and Ben's wedding lol. So the premise would be: "At your son's first birthday, with your family and friends present, you and Ben find yourselves reminiscing about the chaotic day of your wedding."

You know, I've never been a crossover person for some reason. I think my brain likes the compartments of worlds and characters kept within themselves, unless it makes sense to crossover. hey!! thank you so much for asking me this! I'm going to use this question to do a small (not small at all) style analysis of kasuka. despite of his short screen time, he has, i'd say, the most outfit variants of the characters in the anime (obv not counting official art from the rest of the cast, that would be unfair to him).

Adding a necessary read more because i'm yapping my goddamn ass off

first and foremost i think that it his important to say that, yeah, kasuka would wear pretty much anything they ask him to wear, we can see that from the demon-angel heterochromia naked photoshoot thing. but his fashion choices when he's out of character are what is important to me here, because not only are they cohesive between every outfit, but with his personality and character too.

kasuka's style is modest and very formal. he wears long clothing, long sleeved shirts, long jackets, and long pants. something that stood out for me was the fact that with every outfit he's almost always wearing some type of jacket, he has two trench coat variants, the usual black one and the light brown worn in mirai eigou official art. in World at Peace OVA he's wearing a light purple shirt, an open black vest and a white cardigan. In the first episode of shou, during the TV segment presenting his interview, we see him wearing tons of different clothes! the ones that I highlight are 1. a very short scene of him in public holding a mic beside ruri and some other women where he wears a dark green pair of pants with a detachable half-skirt (very industrial goth-like), a long white shirt, and a black leather jacket. Ngl the shaping of that outfit is atrocious, but I have a particular affinity for that element of edge. in contrast to that, however, in a short still of him inside his apartment he has a simple dark blue cardigan and a white dress shirt.

also i need to mention the multiple times he wears suits and formal wear. Kasuka is very formal, not only in his clothes, but more importantly so in his manners, but he also steps out of that box with his fashion choices. the trench coat in his official outfit is that element for me, trench coats are classy, yeah, but they stick out a lot. from the manga art I'd assume it's leather instead of cotton, does it get more goth than that? no it doesn't.

(god i feel the need to also talk about the v-necks, kasuka wears a lot of v-neck cuts and they're literally a huge pet peeve of mine)

another thing is colors. two things i can mention here. kasuka's color palette from his official outfit has burgundy, light purple, and black. these colors in particular are suuuuper classy, i mean, he's fucking rich after all. the choice of a light tone of purple creates contrast with the darkness of the rest of the outfit, he also wears light blue shirts sometimes, there's the other thing: his palette is cold, but these cold colors are light, tranquil, peaceful, just like him, but wrapped in darker tones. Am i even making sense??? anyways

accessories! kasuka wears a silver chain necklace. fuck, not to sound like i have a fixation with his neck, but he also wears ties multiple times, and from the cuts of the collar of his shirts that part of his body is exposed. guys i'm not a pervert, he is the one who likes being chocked, i'm just analyzing.

the last detail to mention from his canon style: in the novels it is said that kasuka's fashion varies anywhere from expensive designer clothes to stuff from the dollar store, funny fact. he's so silly.

OBVIOUSLY this is for a role, i don't think he would wear something like that out of character.

I made a small collage that kept elements of his canon style with more female-associated type of clothing, and also stuff i just personally like Why the hell not. I imagine him wearing a lot of velvet fabrics, along with cashmere and leather, classy but slightly edgy. light and sweet but dark. ambivalent.

I hope this doesn't come off as "his original clothes but Woman Version", I mean yeah that's what it is, really, I wouldn't change his style because it suits him perfectly. I even kept the v-necks, I cannot stress enough how much I hate v-necks. cat mary janes were a Necessity (my best friend has a pair, they're the cutest shoes ever), also added maison margiela type tabis, and i am tabis hater #1 can they go out of style already please. Speaking mostly in terms of the creative process... As a writer, I always sorta theorized that Gaster was a character that filled both Sans' and Papyrus' roles in an earlier concept of Undertale. As the game theme, story, and concepts were further developed/fleshed out, the character that Gaster used to be effectively got split into two different characters. Toby could have left traces of him in the game because why not. Multiple universes can explain it away anyway and hey, he can still make use of the unused character idea in a way. My reasoning behind this line of thought mostly involves how there's so little of Gaster known, how much of what IS known of him is very vague, and how Sans and Papyrus share nearly all the traits (or similar traits) of what can be known or learned of Gaster.

Anyway, I could very easily be wrong. I wouldn't mind much if I am lol. This was just sorta how I've viewed Gaster for a while and I wanted to share. I'm curious what your thoughts are about it.

in any case, back in 2017, Toby posted some of his notes on the development of Undertale, and it seems to show that Papyrus was among the earliest characters to be developed. His character changed quite a bit (for the better), but the way "has a brother named comic sans and a[redacted] named [redacted]" is phrased suggests Papyrus was the more developed character at the time that page was drawn. So, sorry to debunk your idea, but it seems Papyrus gets to be the oldest XD

But, as Gaster exists (insofar as he does), he seems to be a direct nod to the cut content and hidden files of other games. Toby knows people love to comb through game data for secrets, and he deliberately put a few in his own game for people to discover, and possibly hint about his other game...

What I'm curious to see is how this all ties in with Deltarune. Right now, Sans and Papyrus don't seem to be very important to Deltarune's plot, but they're essential characters in Undertale. With the theory that Undertale Sans and Deltarune Sans are the same person at different points in time, this raises questions about how he gets involved in Deltarune's plot; since the (UT) brothers showed up in Snowdin together, if sans is involved that means Papyrus is involved too. But how remains to be seen, and it doesn't answer anything about Gaster either.

So there's plenty to learn about these skeletons yet, and it seems they all have their own parts to play :>

Hey! I used to use the term 'kinning' before I fully knew about community of FictionKins. Now I heard it, felt a connection to it, and looked a bit into it but I don't fully understand it fully. 1, Can you be/identify as multiple characters? I personally have felt extremely strong connections to characters and one I have felt a consistent while I have felt multiple others who come and go.. Like the main two are an oc and another character from a Fandom while the ones that come, go for a while, then come back are characters like Cloud Haetae Cookie from CRK, Rambley from Indigo Park. 2, is it normal for a fiction kin to feel guilty and part of you to want some struggle that the original character because you want or feel the need to be the character more? Before I knew about fiction kins, I felt extremely guilty for the way I wished that to have the same struggles as a character and I never fully understood why I was wishing for it but still, I want to know if it is normal and hopefully know whether or not there is something wrong with me. You totally can! A lot of people experience feeling more like one character for some time, then another later. People generally call that a "kinshift"! So, yes, it IS normal (I, for example, have quite long kinshifts, often for a couple of weeks or even months at a time). Those kinshifts can be of different strength, from just a lingering feeling to an all-out sensation that you ARE, in every way, that character,

It is! While not a pleasant sensation, I know, it's something that happens pretty often (though, as it is with big communities, not to everyone). Don't feel guilty about it- wanting to be like your kin is something that manifests in many ways, from appearance, personality traits, hobbies or- as you said- even struggles.

Obviously, kin experiences are a bit different for everyone- kinning IS, in a way, a spectrum after all- but the things you mentioned are nothing to worry about.

Hey there, and thank you for the question! I do have a few thoughts on it, albeit I try to approach it based on what we've been given across all recent information so it might sound a tad generic. Long post... (sorry, I got carried away lol)

[Preface] As is already obvious, it would appear that of all the main party members, Vincent's the only odd-ball out in terms of his appearance. He doesn't 'belong' to any timeline in EC unlike all the other characters who are from Remake/Intergrade/Rebirth. And I think this is for a reason. I've seen the excuse of perhaps Vincent was just modeled a long time ago, but frankly I don't think the dev team are that shallow. They've had Vincent's model for about a couple years, give or take, or at the very least his design. And they know fans would pick apart character appearances and inconsistencies if something (like Vincent) was out of place. And yet they chose to go out of their way with a totally different take than what we see in Rebirth. It would have been a lot easier to port in Vincent's Rebirth design into EC, but Nomura decided to painstakingly create Vincent from scratch for EC. What's more, we also get a completely different Galian Beast, which is also another extensive process to create. Now granted-- perhaps what we see in EC was what we were going to get in Rebirth but got scrapped, and Nomura may have been so married to Vincent's EC design that he wanted to include it instead. However, if there's anything we have learned about the FF7 dev team (and Nomura), it's that there's always some nuanced reason behind it aside from 'I spent so much time on this; just add it already'. Anyone who has been in the FF7 fandom for some length of time will know you can't always trust what the devs say 100%. They are artists, and they like to be a bit mysterious. All this is to say... I just think there's a potential lore reason for why they decided to give Vincent this unique treatment of being time-line vague. Rebirth has shown us that there isn't a single timeline but multiple worlds that diverge and merge, depending on the choices being made by those who can affect fate. So at least within Rebirth's 'world', we know that multiple worlds can exist in tandem. This concept isn't exclusive to Rebirth, however. It is also indicated (by Sephiroth) at the very beginning of Ever Crisis...

During special story-based events where a portal is involved, you'll notice that they will always have something along the lines of 'another possibility' being repeated. So in essence, while there's nothing official that states EC is its own world or timeline, we are being told that the Lifestream is capable of weaving many 'possibilities', or alternative worlds. And this is front and center with Ever Crisis and Rebirth. What's more, EC just so happens to line up with the compilation lettering system... AC, BC, CC, DC, EC... Coincidence? For those of us who know OG's story and have played EC, there are a few differences when going through the OG's story. It isn't 1:1, and some things are taken from Rebirth. One might call it abridged. So... is Ever Crisis a separate world/timeline? Maybe. In terms of Glenn, I think it's a bit early to tell because Rebirth essentially gave us a spoiler for what happens to Glenn. But First Soldier's story has yet to conclude. So in terms of Glenn, he's a bit of an outlier. I think we'll have a better answer to that when we get part 3 as I'm sure we'll see him there in some form. Though back to Vincent... While it depends on how one looks at 'worlds' or multi-timelines, I think we can mostly all agree it's not a single world. What causes this to get very convoluted is that we got Vincent who is immortal... there are many ways they could handle him being both immortal and being a part of the Lifestream's system that creates multiple worlds from choices. However, the simplest thing I can think of is that Vincent simply exists outside of time. I feel as though Vincent is described as outside of time, but I could be wrong. All I know is that in BC, Vincent does say 'The passage of time has no meaning to me'. This is going deeper into some other territory but I'll just briefly say that I believe Vincent is incapable of merging with the Lifestream... but that's for a different discussion. And because I think he cannot merge with the Lifestream, he is thus 'outside' of time if that makes sense. TLDR: I think it's very possible EC is meant to be 'another possibility' of another world created by the choices of our protagonists (and by way of logic, the choices we make as gamers). Secondly, I think this curious lack of design cohesion is specifically for Vincent, only. This may have to do with him being immortal and existing (likely) outside of time itself. I think this is their way of communicating (as all artists do) Vincent's identity to us without really divulging it. I wouldn't doubt part 3 will uncover this side of Vincent so that we can come back to EC and see a connection.

Anyway! The official release date is 02 April 2024 though there have been some very thoughtful reviews by early readers already. Here, here, here and here.

(It was an ARC that I received too… though in the time it took to put this together, the ebooks have already gone out to readers >.< typical snail yj!) 

Instead, I’ll tell you who I think would be interested in this book or might benefit from reading it, then share things that are cool about it from the perspective of a bilingual hobbyist translator + lover of ancient poetry and lyrics.

I really appreciate how Chinese words are used naturally where needed for concepts and quotes - they are also translated for those who can't read Chinese so no one is left out. It made this book of and about translation (and more) super comfortable to read! The solution is so simple, so direct, so rarely used that I am amused.

Oh, but do note that the Chinese characters are in simplified though!

Altogether, that covers nearly the last 150 years up to now. I’ve never really been into poetry by poets in such relatively recent times, in part because I’d been holding on to this stereotype of them spurning Classical Chinese and ancient poetry in the first half of the 20th century (not entirely true, as I came to realise xD). It made sense and was understandable, but felt sad.

Yet am I the target audience for this book?

Very much so.

In ways I didn’t think I would be too! It was so much fun to experience this both as a reader and a translator that I thought I’d share it here, where we are appreciating Chinese poetry together.

If you didn’t think you’d enjoy modern Chinese poetry, hey, give it a chance!

Oh yeah - on the way home a while back, I was talking to a friend about translation and was surprised to hear that her impression was that it ought to be a straightforward process. Like isn’t it a 1:1 conversion? At some point, ‘what’s the difference between something google translate might return, and how you would say it?’ was asked, and oh that was a delightful question to my ears! I showed her one of my comparison sheets where an original text is laid out alongside multiple translations line-by-line, briefly explaining some common and unique choices and how the people who had translated those probably arrived at the various interpretations. She was pretty amazed to see that the answer to her question was: very different. Hey, it’s a complicated process!

But there’s only so much one can explain in the space of a train ride. That’s why The Lantern and the Night Moths is a book I would also rec to someone like this friend of mine - open minded and curious but never having the chance to think about or encounter the craft of translation.

Like Yilin says, ‘the meaning of a word cannot be fully expressed in one single translation, nor through a series of translation attempts’. She then explains why with great attention to detail and some solid examples from one of the poems with word choices loaded with subtle connotations :D

Now to business...

structure

What really helped keep the reader’s focus was the way each section is organized, how the poems and accompanying essay were presented and finally the short bio of each person right at the end. 

The poets are first introduced through five or six of their poems, works well suited to this purpose. Their voices, distinct through the vision, ambition and emotion of their words, are brought across by Yilin’s sensitive, thoughtful and poetic translations into English. These translations were also creative and transformative in a way that made so much sense after reading one of her reflections on the process, how she ‘must guide it with gentle hands to ensure its spirit is kept alive and intact during this transformative, and often excruciating process’. A rebirth into another language!

Personally, I’ve come to think of reading translations as looking at a work through another’s eyes. So it’s delightful when the translator’s presence is discernible, and even more so when the reader is given insight into their intention and process via commentary. 

Yilin’s essays coupled with the poets’ bios at the end provide a means to go back and appreciate their works in context of their circumstance and inspirations. Similarly, to read the translations with a changed perspective.

I don’t know how much of a thing this is with translated poetry anthologies in English - can count the number I’ve read with both hands lol, and they’re all of the ancient chinese poetry variety - but I really like this design.

drawing on poets who came before them

Remember how we’re always recognizing traces of inspiration from ancient works (to them) in poetry of the various dynasties? 李商隐 Li Shangyin of Tang for example, was influenced by 楚辞 Verses of Chu and folklore and mythology such as that in 山海经 Classic of Mountains and Seas, 李白 Li Bai frequently references poets and history of the 魏晋 Wei-Jin era, and 王维 Wang Wei was clearly familiar with Buddhist scriptures which were translations themselves! 

Just like the late Táng poets whom he praised for boldly deviating from the voices before them, Fei Ming used popular references and tropey shorthands ‘in contexts utterly different from the original, reimagining them anew’. Dai Wangshu, too, ‘boldly re-envisioned what modern poetry could look like by revisiting the classics’. In fact, in his very relatable ‘To Answer the Visitor with Classical Imagery’, I see Li Bai’s 春夜宴桃李园序, Qu Yuan’s 离骚 and lots of - as the title says - classical imagery, as if pulling out painting after painting to describe a feeling.

And Dai Wangshu’s faith in the translatability of poetry, that ‘poetry isn’t what is lost in translation, but rather, what survives it’ reminds me of what a friend, @xiakeponz, said that I agree with so much - because readers can ‘experience something in their own individual way through (your) shared humanity rather than language alone’.

poetic tradition and beyond

Between the lines of contemporary poets Zhang Qiaohui and Xiao Xi, I can really see the charm of plain vernacular, how it can be beautiful, incisive and clever in turns. Even as it seems to have moved further than ever from the structure and language of literary Chinese, the themes that inspired common motifs remain a part of life. Mother and divinity, homesickness, finding oneself, tributes to admirable spirits and the issues that trouble society - just in a new form and with different ways of expression.

Qiu Jin

So many FEELINGS about what Qiu Jin was doing - ‘I awaken the spirits of women, hundreds of flowers, abloom’. I would love if she could see the world now. So many things for her to rouse and fight against, but at the same time just as many to be proud of. I am so in awe of her, but now hearing her loneliness and struggle there is a soft spot in my heart for those too. 

conclusion

So so so…

Qiu Jin’s admirable fire and lonely resolve. Zhang Qiaohui’s precious ability to express beauty in the mundane and in pain. Fei Ming’s utter delight! He is having so much fun and when* I’m vibing, I feel it too. Xiao Xi’s critical eye and keen observation of the world. Dai Wangshu’s whimsical charm and passion for translation. Finally, Yilin Wang, the connecting thread wound through them all, bringing them together so that we may be acquainted. 

*Reading his poetry is like unwrapping a seamless, many layered present. A gift that keeps giving - if only you have a key 😅 Fortunately, Yilin has halved our struggle 🤣
