The French New Wave: A Cinematic Revolution.
Introduction
The French New Wave, or Nouvelle Vague, is a cinematic movement that revolutionized French cinema and, by extension, global cinema. Emerging in the late 1950s, it marked a decisive break from the conventions of traditional filmmaking. This movement not only redefined the rules of directing but also spotlighted new talents who would go on to influence generations of filmmakers.
Tumblr media
Origins of the French New Wave
The movement was born out of criticism, particularly through journals like Cahiers du cinéma, where young cinephiles such as François Truffaut, Jean-Luc Godard, and Éric Rohmer began expressing their dissatisfaction with the rigidity of French cinema at the time. These critics soon transitioned behind the camera to materialize their innovative ideas.
Characteristics of the French New Wave
- Narrative Freedom : Films of the New Wave are characterized by non-linear storytelling and a liberated approach to narrative structure. Plot often takes a back seat, with emphasis placed on emotion and the moment.
- On-location Filming : Unlike traditional cinema, which predominantly relied on studio settings, New Wave directors favored natural locations, lending their films a more realistic and immediate feel.
- Innovative Camera Techniques : The directors experimented with groundbreaking camera techniques such as handheld shots, long takes, and rapid editing. This dynamic approach contributed to a unique aesthetic that often blurred the lines between fiction and documentary.
- Non-professional Actors and Improvised Dialogues : To enhance realism, many New Wave filmmakers cast non-professional actors and encouraged improvisation, resulting in more natural and spontaneous dialogue.
Tumblr media
Pioneering Figures
- Jean-Luc Godard : With films like Breathless (À bout de souffle, 1960), Godard introduced a bold and provocative style, challenging conventional editing and narrative techniques.
- François Truffaut : In The 400 Blows (Les 400 Coups, 1959), Truffaut explored autobiographical themes with a new sensibility, deeply resonating with audiences.
- Agnès Varda : Although sometimes considered on the periphery of the movement, Varda contributed significantly with works like Cléo from 5 to 7 (Cléo de 5 à 7, 1962), enriching the New Wave with a feminine and introspective perspective.

Three Must-See Films of the French New Wave
1. Breathless (1960) - Jean-Luc Godard
One of the cornerstones of the French New Wave, Breathless tells the story of Michel Poiccard, a petty criminal on the run, and his love for a young American, Patricia. The film is renowned for its innovative editing style, with abrupt cuts and a frenetic pace. Godard disrupted traditional cinematic conventions, delivering a daring work that perfectly embodies the rebellious spirit of the movement.
Tumblr media
2. The 400 Blows (1959) - François Truffaut
Truffaut’s debut feature is an autobiographical masterpiece that follows the misadventures of Antoine Doinel, a young boy rebelling against authority. The 400 Blows is a poignant film that explores childhood, the misunderstanding of adults, and the quest for freedom. The film is distinguished by its realism and sensitivity, hallmarks of the New Wave.
Tumblr media
3. Cléo from 5 to 7 (1962) - Agnès Varda
Often referred to as the "grandmother" of the New Wave, Agnès Varda offers an introspective and feminist perspective with Cléo from 5 to 7. The film follows Cléo, a singer awaiting potentially grave medical test results. Over the course of two hours, we watch her traverse Paris, encountering various characters. The film is remarkable for its exploration of time, mortality, and identity, while also capturing the essence of Parisian life.
Tumblr media
The Impact of the French New Wave
The French New Wave profoundly influenced global cinema, paving the way for a new generation of directors willing to break conventions, both in Europe and in the United States. Filmmakers like Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino, and Wong Kar-wai have frequently cited the New Wave as a major source of inspiration.
Conclusion
The French New Wave remains a pivotal movement in the history of cinema. By breaking with tradition and innovating both in form and content, these directors redefined what cinema could be. Even today, their influence is felt, proving that the New Wave has left an indelible mark on the art of filmmaking.

Under the Whispering Door (T.J. Klune) "Welcome to Charon's Crossing. The tea is hot, the scones are fresh, and the dead are just passing through.
When a reaper comes to collect Wallace from his own funeral, Wallace begins to suspect he might be dead.
And when Hugo, the owner of a peculiar tea shop, promises to help him cross over, Wallace decides he’s definitely dead.
But even in death he’s not ready to abandon the life he barely lived, so when Wallace is given one week to cross over, he sets about living a lifetime in seven days.
Hilarious, haunting, and kind, Under the Whispering Door is an uplifting story about a life spent at the office and a death spent building a home."
The Alchemist (H.P. Lovecraft) "
The story is recounted by the protagonist, Count Antoine de C, in the first person. Hundreds of years ago, Antoine's noble ancestor was responsible for the death of a dark wizard, Michel Mauvais. The wizard's son, Charles le Sorcier, swore revenge on not only him but all his descendants, cursing them to die on reaching the age of 32.
The protagonist recounts how his ancestors all died in some mysterious way around the age of 32. The line has dwindled and the castle has been left to fall into disrepair, tower by tower. Finally, Antoine is the only one left, with one poor servant, Pierre, who raised him, and a tiny section of the castle with a single tower is still usable. Antoine has reached adulthood, and his 32nd year is approaching.
His servant eventually dies, leaving him completely alone, and he begins exploring the ruined parts of the castle. He finds a trapdoor in one of the oldest parts. Below, he discovers a passage with a locked door at the end. Just as he turns to leave, he hears a noise behind him and sees that the door is open and someone is standing in it. The man attempts to kill him but Antoine kills him first. His dying words reveal that he is none other than Charles, who actually managed to successfully fabricate the elixir of life, enabling him to personally fulfill the curse generation after generation."

10, 19, and 37 from the 50 questions for your characters, please!
Because I'm working on the next bit of Excuse Me Sir, That's My Emotional Support Militia and it's from his (semi-delirious, admittedly) perspective, Antoine is going to do this.
10) If your character is an antagonist or something of the like, do they self-justify their actions? If so, how?
Look. We evacuated it. We went to a lot more trouble than we really needed to to clear it out. If Batman didn't want people trying to kill him, he shouldn't have lost an entire child soldier. How do you misplace a teenager? Why is Gotham fine with this? What the actual fuck? If we'd detonated those bombs, we'd have done everyone a favor.
19) Summarize your character's goals in one sentence.
For that op? 'Bout 50% 'what I'm being paid to do' and 50% 'keep my employer largely out of trouble'. I tried.
37) What does your character want to change about themselves?
The past, I guess. Look, I won't lie: there's things I've done I regret, there's things that have happened to me that I'd give just about anything to go back and prevent. Sometimes the idea of having a life like my sister's, with a spouse and a couple of kids and a dog, of not checking closets and keeping my back against a wall all the time, sounds nice. But then again, I get bored being in one place for too long, so maybe it wouldn't matter after all.
50) Why did you choose to use this character to answer these questions? (I would love to see your answers!)
Because that's my current narrator and as such, I can bully him into doing it. :p

sorry if this seems random but a little rant in response to what u reblogged about the new tv show.
TBH IT MAKES ME SO MAD THAT THEY ADDED *FORCED* RACISM (and by that I mean Louis taking lestat calling him his fledgling as "slave" like stop thats not what vc is about at ALL?????) AND HAD TO MAKE ANTOINE INTO ANTOINETTE TO SHOW HES BI 💀 I feel like the writers missed a lot of important points about the book and WHY Louis stuck with Lestat and was infatuated with him but hated him at the same time. they really changed character dynamics in it tbh. dont get me wrong, its a decent show, but I just can't see it as the same Louis and Lestat compared to the 1994 movie which I think did a good job in recreating what Anne wrote.
anyway hi 😍🥰😇...
I'm not really sure what forced racism means in the context of the iwtv show ngl. I mean I've really only seen the show through one and a half times but I do know that even Louis himself in the books labels himself as a slave to Lestat's whim (Claudia does as well; she also calls him a slave to Armand) (Lestat also does this in respects to Himself so even he agrees hrejgh) so even in the context of the books I don't really think it's forced or ooc for this connection to be made. Obviously the intention is different considering Louis' blackness in the show, but since this is a theme the show goes with (meaning the racism that Louis experiences in his time period) I don't really have a problem with that wording. I'm not black myself so this is just my opinion by the way, but I've always been pretty interested in the way they decided to change show Louis' race and backstory. It's probably the most interesting change they made imo.
Um yeah the Antoinette thing still sucks, I really don't know why they decided to go with that ?? Idk i always forget abt her so I guess I'm a hater. Agree 👍. We never needed to prove Lestat was bi esp in the first book so wharever? go off showrunners i Guess?? idk bout all that
Loustat's dynamic is completely different in the show and it's one I've rlly never been interested in. I know a lot of people enjoy it and I don't wanna take away from that, so no hate there idk do what you love. I'm just not an enjoyer of the abuser/abusee thing they kinda have going on. Um and the cheating stuff it's all just really exhausting to me. I just really like Louis' reaction to Lestat's actions in the book ! They aren't canon BECAUSE Lestat is abusive and controlling and manipulative and they don't even kiss until book 2, let alone express emotional/physical affection. Show Louis goes back to Lestat even after everything that goes on in ep 5 and. As a self proclaimed Louis self insert I just can't ever see him doing that in the books, at least not with Claudia still in the picture. IDK!
I'm really not a hater of the show, and I want all the Louis fans out there to really think about the way they react to the changes in his character from book to show. There are personality changes that I don't agree with either, but this is a different story and the original one has already been told. I don't have to like the show to respect it and its fans, and the whole pick a side thing between book and show is exhausting to me :/ there r things I like and things i don't like about both versions !
Sorry I know this goes really off topic HGFSHg.. love love

“Good morning, birthday boy.”
Both Antoine and Zelda were now well used to rising at sunrise, so the words hadn’t woken him; but they did pull him out of the nebulous ether between sleep and wakefulness, so he moved closer to the woman curled around his back, “Oh, is that today?”
“Don’t play coy with me. That’s my job.”
Her hand wrapped around his waist, down his chest and to his drawstring, “I’m an old man now, my love, how could you possibly want someone with such wrinkles? I do believe I even found a gray hair yesterday.” A light laugh sounded in his ear, prompting him to turn and face her, “You can be so dramatic for a stoic. Thirty-six is not old.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was getting harder to answer her, to keep his tone measured as one of her hands wrapped around his neck and the other grazed up and down his arm. He brought his hand to her thigh, just below the lace of her silk shorts, “Oh you don’t believe me, do you? You should have heard the creak my knee made yesterday. I think it even scared off one of the horses.”
This time she did laugh aloud, shaking his hand off her thigh by throwing her leg onto the other side of his waist and sinking her weight down onto him. Her tone was as close to mocking as it ever came, “Yet not a peep from mine. Thank God at least one of us is still young enough for this.”
“Oh you’ll see one day, young lady. It’s tough to get old…” But by that point he had all but given up trying to speak without his voice descending into sighs. Her lips were trailing down his stomach, just slowly enough to answer him with a smile he had to look down to catch, “Sounds terrible. You poor thing. I suppose I’ll have to take care of you from now on, won’t I?”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Antoine took another glance out the window, where the day had already somehow grown brighter than he realized; but still he didn’t hurry Zelda with the last of his buttons. She caught his glance and finished the final one, “Don’t worry. You’ll barely be late.”
He pulled her close to him before grabbing his hat from the hook on the wall, “I know. And Mabel’s bakin’ a cake for lunch, so I doubt it’ll be much of a hard day.”
“Oh, so you did know.”
“You don’t have a market on coy, my dear.” He pulled his arm away and returned her wide smile, placing the hat on his head before grabbing her hand one final time, “How ‘bout you bring Violette over after you and Gio finish up work? She can have some cake and you and Mabel can enjoy yourselves.”
She answered with a quick kiss before turning to dress in her own work clothes, “Sounds great, old man.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After their morning tasks, Antoine was standing in the stables with Silver. Before his daughter got there or he got another minute older, there was one thing he knew he wanted to do; and if he didn’t have the confidence to do it today he knew he never would.
She had been friendly with him for weeks now, and he kept hearing Abe’s words in his mind tempting him like a daydream, “You get her to let you ride her and you’re welcome to, anytime you like.” Only she wasn’t some trained horse, she was wild and distrustful. Sometimes her nostrils still flared menacingly in his presence and he thought that maybe, despite all their time together, she still even hated him. But as he ran his hand along her shining black coat, she blinked slowly, trustingly, and he knew that it was the day.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He went to the front of the barn, where he grabbed the riding gear that had sat tempting him every day. First he set the blanket atop her, then the saddle. He stopped periodically as he adjusted it, listening and looking for any sign of her anger, but she stayed patient with him each step. Finally he placed the bridle on her face and buckled the strap in front of her chest. It was like she understood that the movement had fully encircled her in some sort of trap, and she kicked her legs angrily as her eyes went dark.
Any other day he might have walked away, or undone the buckle around her chest, but today he knelt down in front of her so he could look her in the eyes. “Hey old girl, hey,” the words were half spoken, half whistled, “it’s me, okay? Just me. You can trust me.”
Her kicking stopped and her eyes seemed to settle on him, blinking slower and slower as he ran his hand along the side of her neck.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He walked beside her, letting out a shaky breath and putting a hand on her thigh. Alright, Antoine. Now or never. Don’t think about her throwing you in the sand. Don’t think about her breaking your back with one kick. He grabbed onto the horn and hoisted himself up onto the saddle. In the movement his knee let out a low creak and he laughed aloud, louder than he intended to, “Old man.”
Only his voice seemed to stir something in Silver, and she immediately turned to trot out of the stables. He grabbed the reins immediately and went over everything Abe had told him. Don’t pull too tightly. Stay calm. Your feet matter just as much as your hands. Talk to them with every move you make. Stay fucking calm.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Out in the desert sunshine, he passed Abe in his favorite spot next to the fire where he had sat to eat his cake. Antoine didn’t dare fully turn to face him, but out of the corner of his eye he could see his eyebrows raised impressively and a small approving smile on his face.
The closer they got to the edge of the farmyard, the more Silver seemed to remember exactly what she was doing, and perhaps even exactly where she was going. Her feet moved slowly at first, and then faster and faster as Antoine’s guidance grew more comfortable and confident. As the hills opened up and the flowers parted for them, it was like he forgot to be afraid or to wish that this moment was everything he had ever dreamed of, simply because it was.

Dimanche 10/09 - O melhor dia de todos
Tumblr media

"Olivia, watch your language," her mother frowns disapprovingly. "A lady shouldn't speak that way."
"I'm not a lady, and it's not like you haven't heard me say worse," she sighs. She looks at her father, who's still gazing with interest at the fabric in Grimmjow's hands. "But I'm starting to feel a little like an outsider here."

“Oh,” Olivia exclaims softly. “You look fancy.”
He grins at her. “Clean up nice, don’t I?”
And he does. Grimmjow is always handsome, but Olivia notes the dress jacket she’s never seen him wear before and what looks like a new shirt beneath it. His pants are crisply pressed, his boots are clean and shiny, and his hair has been neatly pulled back into a braid that hangs over his left shoulder.
“Yeah,” she agrees with a smile. “You really do.”
“Ain’t so bad yourself, Princess,” he smirks. “So this is what ya look like in a dress, hm?” He eyes her up and down in a way that makes her feel like she’s wearing nothing at all. “With m’lady’s permission, I’m gonna eat you up later.”
“Stop that,” she fusses, flustered. “Don’t get me all worked up right before we go to my parents’ house.”
He just shoots her a knowing look.
It’s then that she notices the wrapped bundle he’s set aside. “What’s that?” She asks, pointing to it.
“That’s a secret,” he grins, hoisting the bundle in one arm and holding his other hand out for her to take. “Ready?”
“As ready as I’m going to get, I suppose.” She takes his hand, linking their fingers together. “Thank you for doing this,” she adds softly.
He looks back at her, mischief in his bright eyes. “How bout ya thank me later? I know a couple different ways…”
“Grimm!”
--
“Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez,” her father repeats. “That sounds like a Jeleian name. Is that where you’re from?”
“That’s right,” Grimmjow replies. He seems to be pleasantly surprised. “Not many folks care to know that.”
To Olivia’s own surprise, Antoine smiles. “I used to go to the Jele islands a lot when I was a young man,” he admits. “I have fond memories of them. Which one do you call your home?”
“Cyrenia is where I hail from.”
“Ah, the mainland,” Olivia’s father replies. “You’re a long way from home… Do you get to go back often?”
Grimmjow shakes his head, a shadow passing briefly over his face. “Ain’t been home in over ten years,” he confesses. “Respectfully, my memories of the place ain’t so fond as yours.”
Antoine nods in understanding. “Then, I won’t ask you any more about it.”
A brief silence ensues. Olivia steals a glance at her mother. Mirelle’s expression is closed off, unreadable. She hasn’t said much so far - only her name when making introductions and a short thank you to Grimmjow for sparing time for them. She doesn’t seem particularly keen to join in their current conversation, either.
Olivia tries not to sigh.
Grimmjow is moving on the sofa beside her, lifting the bundle he carried with him. Her curiosity about what’s in the bundle intensifies. Her eyes are on him as he unwraps it, so she doesn’t see the surprise on her mother’s face; she only hears the quiet gasp.
“Mama?” She looks up, concerned.
Her mother is staring at the fabric in Grimmjow’s hands. Olivia peers closely at it. She can see nothing out of the ordinary in it - it’s simply a length of fabric woven together with yarn of different colors. Confused, she puts a hand on Grimmjow’s arm. “Is… that a gift for my mother?”
He looks back at her, that tender smile that he reserves just for her on his face. “Yeah,” he says quietly. “Gift for your pop, too… for both of ‘em.”
Mirelle is on her feet in one instant, crouching over the fabric in the next. “How did you know about this?” She breathes the question softly, hesitantly - almost as though she’s afraid of the answer. “I haven’t seen one of these in many, many years.”
Grimmjow chuckles warmly. “I spend a lot of time on Vora,” he answers. Olivia can see the way Antoine perks up at the way he pronounces the name of the island they come from. “Been doin’ for years, every time I pass through.”
Mirelle shakes her head. “But how did you know?” She stares at him. “You’re barely over forty, if at all.”
“I’m sorry,” Olivia waves a hand in the air. “Does someone want to explain to me what the hell is going on?”
“Olivia, watch your language,” her mother frowns disapprovingly. “A lady shouldn’t speak that way.”
“I’m not a lady, and it’s not like you haven’t heard me say worse,” she sighs. She looks at her father, who’s still gazing with interest at the fabric in Grimmjow’s hands. “But I’m starting to feel a little like an outsider here.” She looks to her lover, but he’s looking to her mother - deferentially, Olivia notices.
“A long, long time ago,” Mirelle starts, “this is what we called a life-weaving fabric.” Her expression is nostalgic as she runs her hands delicately over the fabric. “It’s created out of a special kind of yarn that’s only made on Vora. It… Well, depending on the colors of the yarn that you use, it can tell a story.”
Olivia leans closer to look at the multicolored fabric. “Oh, I see. So is this one telling a story?”
“White,” Mirelle says, pointing to the fabric that coincides with the color. “Respect for the wisdom of your seniors. Purple: homage to a person in a position of leadership or authority. Blue: a promise to protect. Red: a confession of love. And green,” she finishes, “the desire to unify hearts.” She looks back up at Grimmjow again, as if she cannot believe what she’s seeing. Her gaze shifts to Olivia then. “I haven’t seen a life-weaving fabric since…”
“Since the day I brought the one I'd had made for her to her parents,” Antoine supplies. “It’s an old Voraen tradition that had started to die even by the time your mother and I met.”
Respect for the wisdom of your seniors.
Homage to a person in a position of leadership or authority.
A promise to protect.
A confession of love.
The desire to unify hearts.
Understanding of what it means starts to sink in, and Olivia turns to look at him. “How did you know about this?” She asks, echoing her mother’s question.
Grimmjow is silent for a few moments, and Olivia can tell he’s thinking about his words. “I pass through a lotta places,” he starts, addressing not just her, but her parents too. “And I know it might be I seem like the most uncultured bastar--- eh… uncultured man you’re ever gonna meet. Couldn’t care less about the politics of a place, but I like people, y’know? It’s why I move around so much. I like people, and there ain’t nothin’ that teaches ya about people like culture does. That means now-culture and past culture.
“I hold no love for Jele and its islands,” he goes on, “but there’s a whole lotta places I do have love for… and Vora’s one of ‘em.” He chuckles, and to Olivia’s ears it sounds a little self-deprecating. “Even before I met Sae--Livvy,” he corrects himself, “I knew I’d have one of these made if I ever met a Voraen lady I loved enough to do it for… but I won’t tell ya how quick I had it made after she walked into my life.”
Olivia can see the way her father’s brows jump when he hears Grimmjow say Olivia’s middle name. “Well,” Antoine says, unable to help the laugh that escapes, “it seems like you know all sorts of secret things.”
“I know what ya think of me and what I do,” Grimmjow says somberly. “And I ain’t gonna sit here and lie and tell ya I’m the world’s most honest, upstandin’ man. But if truth is what’s bein’ asked for, I’ll tell it to ya. I ain’t never loved anybody as much as I love her. This,” he goes on, motioning to the fabric in his lap, “ain’t meant to convince ya I’m a good man - though I’m workin’ on bein’ better. It’s meant to tell ya I’m serious about your daughter, and I plan to stay serious.”
Olivia and her parents are shocked speechless. To their credit, her parents seem to recover from their shock a lot faster than she does.
It’s her mother who speaks first. “Well. I still can’t say that I approve of this relationship.”
“Mama---”
“But,” Mirelle continues, holding up a hand, “it seems I may have misjudged you, and for that, I’m sorry.”
Grimmjow laughs good-naturedly. “Happens a lot,” he says.
“Why don’t the two of you stay for dinner?” Her father suggests. “I’d like to hear more about your adventures at sea - the ones you can tell me about, anyway.”
Olivia looks at Grimmjow, letting her eyes meet his and telegraphing that she’ll leave it up to him. He flashes her a grin, then turns to Antoine. “Sounds good to me.”
--
When she wakes, the darkness outside tells her that she hasn’t been asleep long; night is upon them, and the lamp in her room is lit. She shifts under the sheets, her body no longer trapped beneath the heavy mass of muscle that is Grimmjow.
He is still in bed, lying on his back with his eyes on the ceiling.
“Hello,” she calls softly to get his attention.
He looks over at her, flashing her a smile. “Wore you out, huh?”
“In a good way,” she smiles back.
He lets out a low chuckle. “Good.”
She moves closer to him, and he automatically reaches for her to pull her close. “Did you sleep?” She asks.
“Nah,” he tells her. “Didn’t feel like it. And it’s more fun to watch ya flail around in your sleep like some kinda kid.”
“I do not,” she protests indignantly.
“Yeah ya do,” he laughs, tickling her in the side. “Decked me in the stomach a couple times too. You gonna pay for them damages?”
As much as she tries to hold them in, girlish giggles escape her. “If anything,” she gasps around her laughter, “you should be paying me for damages. My entire body is sore.”
“Told ya I was gonna eat ya up, didn’t I?” He kisses her temple. “Never lied to ya before, don’t plan on startin’ now.”
She knows his words are meant as a lighthearted joke, but she goes sober at the truth of them. “You surprised me today,” she says softly.
“Hm? What, didn’t think I’d know which fork to use?”
She swats at him. “That isn’t what I meant, although I was quite surprised to see you exhibiting table etiquette that even my hard-to-please mother was impressed by,” she laughs. “But I meant… I meant the other thing. The life-weaving fabric. That’s,” she pauses, unsure if she should say what she’s thinking but unable to keep the thought to herself. “Isn’t that a pretty serious thing?”
“Yep,” Grimmjow agrees easily.
“And that’s… you… you meant to do that,” she goes on. It isn’t phrased as a question but she’s asking anyway.
Something in her tone makes him chuckle. “Sae, I get the feelin’ the word husband makes ya wanna crawl outta your skin. Am I right?”
“I… don’t know,” she starts slowly. “I think before, I always associated that word with a specific person.” She knows better than to say Silvio’s name while she’s in bed with Grimmjow. “And the thought of that person being my husband came with a long list of things that made me panic. Responsibilities I knew I’d have, behaviors I’d have to exhibit, standards I’d have to uphold. It all just made me so anxious,” she admits.
“Hm,” he hums thoughtfully, gently running his palms up and down her arms. “And how about when you think about that word outside of that person?” He’s following her lead, not bringing Silvio’s name into their bed.
Olivia takes a moment to think about it - to think about that word in connection with the man who’s with her now, the one whose arms are wrapped tightly around her, making her feel safe. “Well, it certainly doesn’t make me want to crawl out of my skin,” she smiles. “I guess it makes me think of… of what kind of life I might have if I decided to build it with a husband. If he and I decided to build it together.” She looks tentatively up at him. “And what about you? What does the word ‘wife’ conjure up in that brain of yours?”
“Never thought much about it til now,” Grimmjow confesses, his voice quiet and low. “Livin’ as wild of a life as I been doin’ all this time… never thought anybody’d put up with it.”
“But suppose there was someone who would,” Olivia muses. “Someone who… wanted to. Then what?”
He looks down at her. “Then I’d do whatever I needed to make her happy,” he replies. “Maybe even do a lot less of that wild shit… keep her close, take care of her til she gets sick of me.”
There are butterflies in Olivia’s stomach. Not even the vague, casual way they’re speaking about something so significant can calm them. “I’m not built for life as a diplomat, or a politician.” The words are spilling out of her before she even has a chance to consider how to say them. “I want to help Vora and its people, and I’ll do all I can to help them… but that isn’t the life I was meant to live forever. I want… I want to be with you.”
Grimmjow is offering her that tender smile again - the one that’s only for her. “You makin’ a pass at me, Princess?”
“Yeah,” she laughs, as he pulls her closer. “Yeah… I think I am.”

Hi! Feel free not to answer this ask because I know the discourse topic of lestat’s cheating is most definitely a dead horse at this point in the fandom but I wanted to send you some thoughts. I’ve been seeing some of the new viewers from Max who’ve now watched the show simply labelling and dismissing lestat as The Cheater which does sadden me a bit to see how the nuance of loustat’s relationship (from a book fan pov) has been reduced to that because of those particular choices by the writers. I don’t mean to be too negative and I think the nuance IS there in the show, I like so much of what the writers did, but did something like excessively circling back to lestat’s infidelity overshadows too much of the actual core reasons for the families inevitable doom in NOLA? Because I understand how new viewers not picking up some of the other layers to it. In the book the stuff with Antoine is certainly there but that’s at the end of 60 years together as opposed to in the show where it’s like 25 or so years on and off cheating out of 30 years together, it does change things. Do you think that writing choice was the right one in the show or does it depend on if they revisit it in the future? It’s hard as a book fan for me personally to make that call because in the books the relationships are far more fluid, ambiguous, between the lines and all that, so what was and wasn’t infidelity throughout the chronicles just isn’t ever the main concern, there are allusions to jealousy but never betrayal quite like in the show, but the show is doing it’s own thing and maybe this is how iwtv lestat would act in a more monogamous traditional relationship with Louis in this time period, it’s hard to call.
Thanks x
Hey!
(I get you, still....^^)
It is weird (to me), that the focus Louis put on Lestat's cheating... works so well.
Because yes, within the tale Antoinette serves as the "reason". The reason Louis is so destroyed, the reason he is depressed, the reason why Claudia is mad. The reason why Louis is suffering so bitterly.
Convenient, isn't it. :)
Because they were threatened. Louis has a hard time with the right of passage. Louis also has a hard time killing (and an eating disorder), and a hard time with the lack of intimacy coming from the lack of libido. Louis chokes on his own hypocrisy, and the choices he made. His guilt. Louis has bouts of depression. Louis withholds, to punish.
Of course the cheating doesn't help, how could it.
But Louis very skillfully directs the focus of the tale ("Let the tale seduce you") to that aspect of the relationship, and the impact it (undoubtedly) had.
But... others have pointed it out, too (recently saw a post on Twitter, reposted by @neilcfreak there iirc??) that Antoinette... does not quite fit with the tale. Her hairstyle, her clothes. That she doesn't age (until she's turned). The finger thing. And also: the cross-dressing (and a likely resemblance to Gabrielle, I would imagine)
Personally I think the whole Antoinette arc is not yet through.
Maybe she'll be the one accusing them on the stage in Paris. It's certainly possible, and then it would be a heightening of that arc, in a sense.
And maybe... you know I wouldn't put it past Rolin and the writers to go more book canon there and let her show up in Dubai. Because we know already that they're taking from "Prince Lestat". And we know that the tale was not as it was told, at least not completely. We know already that they want to revisit everything and that it will "change how we saw season 1".
On this note:
(I‘m blocked by them but got recc'ed and sent that post 🤷🏽‍♀️):
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And that is indeed very interesting - but not just because it fits Louis.
Because Louis does not need to eavesdrop here imho, he is literally in the same room.
But… outside Antoine(tte) is.
Antoine. Subject of the novel. Antoine(tte), tasked to eavesdrop on Louis and Claudia, to keep an eye on them, to follow them. Isolated from them, too.
In the book Antoine is quite soft and somewhat remote, very much intellectually driven and by music, melancholic and socially isolated, something that must have happened to Antoinette as well while she waited those 20 years(?) for Lestat to turn her.
Yet he felt ugly, loathsome, unfit to live, existing from moment to moment like an addict. He gravitated to the crippled, the diseased, the bohemian, and the downtrodden when he wanted an evening of conversation, just a little cerebral companionship. It kept him from weeping. It kept him from killing too brutally and indiscriminately. He slept in graveyards when he could find a large and secret crypt, or in cons in cellars, and now and then almost trapped by the sun he dug straight down into the moist Mother Earth, uttering a prayer that he would die there. [...] Antoine would have gone out west to see Lestat on the stage. But he was still struggling with the simplest difficulties of life in the late twentieth century when the massacres began.
I think that book is another meta commentary on the truth bleeding through and a direct reference to Antoine. Maybe these books are Louis' subconscious, depending on whether he changed that memory/tale himself... or not.
And so... I can totally see the show take Antoine's characterization and return from "Prince Lestat" to be honest.
((Imagine if she's the "interior designer".^^))
We'll see.
But as with all the things about this show I don't think it can be fully analyzed yet. We simply do not have the full picture yet. And so... I'm not 100% sure we are that far from book canon, actually. In fact, I think we may be much closer in some aspects than previously thought.
But we'll see. Season 2 will tell :)
The cheating definitely seems to be what people get worked up most though, which is exactly why the focus is where it is I think...
Look at my right hand, not at my left.
Let the tale... seduce you.
In the pages of the first book, published long ago, he found himself, nameless, “the musician,” with not so much as a physical description except that he’d been a “boy,” a mere footnote to the life and adventures of his maker as told by the vampire Louis, that one whom Lestat had so loved, and feared to anger. “Let him get used to the idea, Antoine, and then I’ll bring you over. I can’t ... I can’t lose them, Louis and Claudia.” [...]
“He was my friend, Lestat,” Antoine confessed. “He told me about his lover, Nicolas, who had been a violinist. He said he couldn’t speak his heart to his little family, to Louis or Claudia, that they would laugh at him. So he spoke his heart only to me.” [...] “But I have to go,” Antoine said. He burst into tears. He wrapped his arms tight around himself and rocked back and forth on the edge of the bed. His long black hair fell down over his face. “I have to get back to Lestat. I have to. And if anyone can help me nd him, it’s Louis, isn’t it?” [...] Let me in, I beg you, let me in. Louis, let me in. Made by Lestat, never having had a chance to know you, never meant to harm you or Claudia, those long-ago times, forgive me, let me in. Benji, my guiding light, let me in. Benji, my consolation in unending darkness, let me in. Armand, I beg you, find a place in your heart for me, let me in.
And Louis lets him in.
Now, I can obviously be wrong^^.
But... I just cannot shake the suspicion that this arc is far from over. 🤷🏽‍♀️
