seeing people on here spin the arion kurtaj story as "this is why you never get diagnosed for autism" makes it want to kill. yeah sure the prison complex which would have given him a life sentence anyways and fined him for millions in damages if he didnt have autism and without the help of advocates and attorneys trying to get him off light would have totally been easier on him if he wasnt diagnosed autistic. sure.

Support, education, and awareness form a powerful triad in addressing social issues and fostering positive change. This interconnected approach begins with raising awareness, shining a light on often overlooked problems or misunderstood topics. Through various channels - media campaigns, community events, and digital platforms - information reaches a wider audience, sparking interest and concern.
Education follows, providing in-depth knowledge and context. It equips individuals with facts, statistics, and historical background, enabling them to understand the complexities of the issue at hand. This informed perspective cultivates empathy and motivates action.

Support completes the circle, offering practical assistance, resources, and encouragement to those affected by the issue and those working to address it. This can take many forms, from financial aid and counseling services to volunteer programs and advocacy groups.
Together, these elements create a comprehensive strategy for tackling challenges, promoting understanding, and driving meaningful progress. By combining awareness, education, and support, communities can unite to effect lasting change and build a more informed, compassionate society.

Stop telling people things are 'easy'
People often say things that are not helpful when giving advice - "It's easy", "If I can do it, you can do it", "You just need to try harder", "You'll get it next time", "If you wanted it badly enough, you would find a way". I get that they mean well. But sometimes people just CAN'T do things, or at least, can't do them as easily. Everyone's ability levels are different. We know that. Why does our attempt at support not reflect that?
If you tell someone that the thing they're struggling with is 'easy', if you say there's no reason why they shouldn't be able to do it, then by that logic if they continue to struggle, you are saying that THEY are the problem, or that they're the error in the equation. There's a good chance they'll internalise that and feel like a failure, especially if it comes from someone whose advice they trust.
A better form of verbal encouragement would look like, "I've done something similar in the past, can I share some tips I learned along the way?" Or, "I'm sorry you're struggling, what part are you finding most difficult and how can I help with that?" It's okay to acknowledge someone's shortcomings, if they themselves are acknowledging it and seeking help. It's way more honest and authentic and builds more trust than some empty platitude.
Another radical idea would be to offer practical support instead of advice, but we've wandered so very far from the concept of 'it takes a village' and now it's every man for himself. Nobody wants to 'feed a man a fish' because we've been taught that letting people work things out for themselves is more beneficial in the long run. But the reality is that some people won't have a long run, if they can't overcome some of the hurdles at the start of the race.
Words are important. The language we use matters. It can be be hard to train ourselves out of using phrases and auto responses we've used and heard others use our whole lives. But to truly empower someone you have to meet them where they're at, and let them know that you've got their back win or lose. That's what really counts.
Change is hard. Growth as a person can be uncomfortable. But finding better ways to support each other is worth it.

do u find it weird that some people just assume u have autism b/c ur good at something. ive been seeing this a lot lately and i would be really weirded out if it happened to me even tho i am autistic 😭
Boring people conflate dedicating one's time to learning a new thing as having a “hyper-fixation” or being "autistic" - this is fucking annoying for two reasons: For one, I am not autistic, so what right do I have to parade around the term? Especially since, as cool as it might sound to be super dedicated toward your hobbies, it also comes with an inherent difficulty to pick up on social-cues and manage one's emotions. I knew someone rather closely with high-support autism, it was not fun; I know life was hard for them - and yeah, he was very good at focusing on his hobbies and interests, but anything outside of those tasks posed to be incredibly difficult and emotionally draining.
Two. Just because I, a neurotypical person managed to focus on my hobbies and get good at them, doesn't mean I have some neurodevelopment disorder. Jesus fucking christ, have you tried making an EFFORT on the thing you're interested in?? People are so used to being boring FUCKS that they forget they can very easily pick up a pen and start drawing, or download a free program and start producing. People go around living their whole lives in awe of the fact that other people aren't boring fucking zombies like them, hooly shit!

Disabled people (both people with physical disabilities and people with psychological disabilities) should be able to get housing, food, medical needs, etc met without having to work or stay in school. ...Okay, really, everyone deserves access to free or affordable housing, food, and medical care, but disabled people ESPECIALLY deserve it because if I, a law student with "low support needs" autism, depression, GAD, OCD, and ADHD, cannot afford to take a break from school and take a semester off because I'd have to start repaying my loans because I had to drop down to three credits last fall and because I would have to get a job, so it wouldn't really be a break (which, I have had one job in my life, and I'm not fully convinced it wasn't a fluke, and also, trying to maintain a job when you have disabilities is difficult), I can only imagine that disabled people with higher support needs are even more fucked than me when it comes to being able to get housing and food and medical care without much, if any, funding.
Yes, Medicaid, Medicare, Food Stamps, and housing programs exist in the US, but, uh, I hate to break it to y'all, but that doesn't fully fix the problem, at all. There are a lot of old apartment complexes that are straight up inaccessible if you use a wheelchair. I'm living in one now. Applying for Medicaid and other programs can be a pain in the ass, especially when you're disabled.
"Just live with your parents!" My parents were emotionally abusive and emotionally neglectful, transphobic, and they literally harassed me so much during my 1L year that I still have nightmares.
"Live with a roommate!" I tried to. It went fucking terribly.
"Are you really disabled if you're able to be in law school?" YES. YES I AM.
Actually, on that note, law schools and the law profession need to become more accommodating for disabled people ASAP. Buck v. Bell needs to be overturned. Courts should be wheelchair accessible. Having to get past seven plus different forms of ableism just to graduate and pass the bar is ridiculous. Seriously, can we get some resources for disabled people in law school and the law profession, please?
Disabled rights matter, and we have every right to be able to live in peace and get our needs met, regardless of our support needs, disabilities, or anything else.

Any chance you could do Lando x AUDHD (Autism&ADHD) reader?? Either just him or poly with Oscar, maybe Oscar try a keep them both in line??
The Responsible One
Landoscar x Reader
Summary: Oscar reflects back on the chaotic duo he has for partners
Warnings: none :)
Notes: Lando is ADHD coded... change my mind, I dare you. Also, a life update for you all! I know things have slowed down, but I am still writing! I've been working my ass off and getting ready to start my masters program, so life has been insane. Thank you all for the continued support! ❤️
Masterlist
Tumblr media
It certainly wasn't anything new to Oscar, having to manage both Lando and their girlfriend. The chaos they bring with every footstep is insane, but he loves them both dearly.
One time, he found them deep in a conversation about the difference between chocolate and vanilla. Sometimes, he gets absoloute silence only to be interrupted by Lando's strange thoughts that he just needs to say.
Don't get him started on taking them anywhere out to eat. He hates anything to do with it because both of them have differening food sensory issues. It's a pain to get them to agree on anything.
His favorite moments are when both of them are incredibly clingy. It's like being suffocated with hugs, kisses, and cuddles. It's an amazing way to die if you ask him.
He once had to run around looking for them because neither was getting back to him. Turns out they were asleep on the floor together. Blankets tangled with their limbs. Rain sounds playing from somebody's phone. They looked so cute and peaceful, and Oscar does love to sleep. So the Australian joined them in their huddle on the floor.
Speaking of the floor: why are they both obsessed with it? He can't tell you exactly why, but they both love it. Floor time is an essential part of their day that Oscar has adapted to. When Kim started finding him on the floor, he laughed and said, "Oscar! They got you, too!" Apparently, Max also likes the floor because of them. Then Charles started because of Max. The domino effect her supposes.
The one thing he spends most of his time trying to figure out is volume. Specifically why Lando can be quite on second and not the next. It's a jump from word to word sometimes. Whereas the female is so random, he can't predict it. He wouldn't mind it, except for when they set each other off, and then she gets overstimulated. Lando feels so bad that he has to apologize at the end of every sentence for the rest of the day.
He spends many hours trying to soothe both of them. He knows, however, that's at the end, he will be treated to comfort food and a movie. Not because he needs it neccecarily, but because the other two do, and he gets to reap the benefits.
Humor and jokes with the two are his favorite. One of them is blunt, and she loves to tell people like it is. She has no filter really and is a deadpan like Oscar himself. The other can't lie to save his life but tries. He lacks a filter in such a strange way that really Oscar never knows what he's going to say. Oscar is constantly having to hold in his laughs.
They both talk his ear off about random information about the things they love, but he could listen to them all day. They get overstimulated and need breaks. But he's happy to provide a safe space. They cuddle and hug and cling to each other, but he basks in it.
They love him unconditionally, including him. They make him feel wanted.
And it doesn't matter him to him how many people ask him why, or how many tell him they are too chaotic. He could care less. He loves them because they are the definition of distraction walking around as humans.
They are his chaos. He doesn't mind being the responsible one if he gets to keep laying on the floor listening to their ramblings.
And what can he say? It's fun to watch them be brutally honest with people.
