hii, im f4t4l frankie (they/them) and this is my tumblr blog (obviously xD). my favorite things are drawing (which is most of what i post here atm), writing, coding, and going to the mall ^^ plus a little bit of music, but i dont usually post that >.< on my website i talk about obscure music artists, tho its been a bit since i made an article. mb Dx

i always wanted to make speedpaint videos on the internet. i tried as a kid but didnt know how to download mp3s or figure out movie maker (my software of choice even now bc my laptop is kinda old xD).

Weirdly Motivated to Write



Well, I did say that I have a new keyboard—to correct my posture and not look like a pretzel while I work remotely. Small victories, right?
Now, let’s talk about motivation. Because for some reason, I am absolutely buzzing with it today. Is it because of my keyboard? Most likely. Is that weird? Probably. But hey, I never claimed to be normal.
See, besides being a full-time student, I also have a job. And that job? Writing. Creating. Capturing life in words, pictures, and fleeting moments of inspiration. Filming, writing, photography—these are the things that make me absolutely happy. And honestly? Life is just too beautiful not to share.
There’s something about having the right tools that makes everything feel different. You could give me the exact same blank document yesterday, and I wouldn’t have been nearly as eager to write as I am today. But now? With my new keyboard? I feel like I could churn out a whole novel, rewrite history, or at the very least, write an unnecessarily long blog post about why I feel like writing.
Maybe it’s the clickity-clackity. (Yes, that’s a technical term.) There’s just something deeply satisfying about hearing each keystroke, like a tiny round of applause with every word I type. It’s hypnotizing. Encouraging. Addictive, even. Without it, I don’t think I’d be half as motivated to write.
And that brings me to a very important question:
Could this mean my iPad will replace my laptop?
Ha! Not a chance. Never. Not in a million years.
As much as I love this setup, there are things my iPad just cannot do. And honestly, those things make a huge difference in my daily workflow. Don’t get me wrong—iPads are fantastic. They’re lightweight, portable, and perfect for quick notes, reading, or sketching. But when it comes to serious work? My Windows laptop remains irreplaceable.



Why My Windows Laptop Wins Every Time
Multitasking Like a Pro iPads have some multitasking capabilities, but let's be real—nothing beats having multiple windows open, side by side, without limitations. On my laptop, I can have a research paper in one window, my notes in another, a video playing on the side, and Spotify running in the background. Try doing that on an iPad without constantly swiping between apps. It’s just not the same.
File Management That Actually Makes Sense The Windows file system is superior. Hands down. Drag-and-drop functionality, proper file explorer, external drive support—it’s just easier. iPads, on the other hand, have a clunky file system that often makes me want to scream into the void. Copying files? Moving them? Finding them again? It takes way longer than it should.
Software Compatibility & Heavy-Duty Programs This one’s a dealbreaker. There are so many professional-grade applications that just don’t run on iPads. Things like:
Adobe Premiere Pro for serious video editing (iPad versions are limited)
Photoshop & Illustrator (yes, they have mobile versions, but they’re nowhere near as powerful)
Microsoft Excel with Macros (because let's be honest, the iPad version is lacking)
Programming software & full IDEs (if I ever decide to code, my iPad will just sit there, useless)
Mouse & Keyboard Freedom Yes, iPads can connect to a mouse and keyboard, but do they truly function like a laptop? Nope. There are still weird limitations. Right-clicking? Custom shortcuts? The precision of a real trackpad or external mouse? Windows just does it better. Period.
Downloading Anything Without Jumping Through Hoops iPads don’t let you download everything you want, especially if it’s outside the App Store. Need a program that isn’t on Apple’s list of approved software? Too bad. Meanwhile, on Windows? I can download whatever I want, whenever I want, however I want. No restrictions.
Serious Writing & Formatting Writing on an iPad is fine for quick drafts, but when it comes to formatting long documents, citations, and exporting files in different formats? My laptop is my best friend. Whether it's proper PDF editing, running reference managers like Zotero, or managing multiple Word documents with complex layouts, iPads just don’t cut it.
Gaming & Emulation Okay, maybe not work-related, but still important! iPads have mobile games, sure. But do they run full-fledged PC games? Nope. Can I use them for game modding? Nope. Can I play older games with emulators? Again, nope. My Windows laptop, on the other hand? Unlimited possibilities.
The Verdict?
As much as I love the convenience of my iPad + keyboard combo, it will never replace my laptop. Ever. My laptop is where the real magic happens—the deep work, the serious projects, the things that actually require a proper computer.
But will I still use my iPad for writing on the go? Absolutely. Because nothing beats the clickity-clackity joy of my new keyboard. And if that keeps me weirdly motivated to write, then hey—I’ll take it.
So if you ever see me typing away somewhere, looking ridiculously focused, just know—it’s not me. It’s the keyboard.

i think i followed you Back In The Day, seven years and seven blogs ago, for something related to mass effect (zaeed? maybe? who could say) and it's wild to come back to this site years later and find you thriving, surviving, growing-- playing ffxiv! love that game. curious how you'll feel about some side characters in shadowbringers, but i won't spoil which ones.
i do have real questions, though; writing tools. not pens or software, but personal structure tools and/or guidance. what does a beat sheet look like, for you? do you have a favored way of outlining or note-taking on your own thoughts when putting a story together?
and... i'm really curious how you hold a big story together in your head while you work on it in pieces, especially for something like dangerous crowns. there's this larger story i've been chasing around for a while, and I can't quite wrap my head around how to write the political/espionage plot for it without feeling like i've actually written a children's pantomime. the best i've got so far is "research real life events and use those as my outline" but after a point it becomes hard to keep track of all the variables of who knows what about whom, who is planning x when y, etc, etc. the characters don't need to know all that-- and may never know some things-- but i feel like /I/ need to understand what's happening on the macro level so i can move the world around them appropriately.
short version: how do YOU wrap your head around writing complex plots?
hey, anon! i started endwalker this week after a long... uh... glamour detour, so don't worry about spoiling things. i spoil myself for a lot of stories on purpose anyway. let's just say i've been attached to one too many characters who got killed.
anyway. writing. i've always handled plots the same way: clear documentation. if i don't note it down, i'm not going to remember it. i've used the same table outline since around 2014. it varies in detail for different projects, but the core format stays. i know it's kicking around in my blog archive somewhere, but it's worth reposting once in a while because people like to ask about it. here's what it looks like, featuring plot points cribbed from an endeavour episode:
i used this format for an outline at work a while back, and the team found it easy to follow, which was a big day for my ego. keeping track of plot structure is even more chaotic at work because we have multiple writers who all need to stay on the same page. we have very meticulous notes on what the player should know at which point, when we're introducing new information, and what we know, but shouldn't tell. we're also not above leaving notes like "this character has to convey X," "this character has to learn Y here," or "this is a clue that they're planning Z." it can be super on-the-nose. all that matters is that it makes sense to you. because you're right - if you get too lost, you can write yourself into logic holes of tremendous proportions. ask me how i know!
[as a sidenote, researching real-life events as a starting point has really grown on me in the past few years. my lead on coh3 had me do it. he said we were dealing with real people's history, so we couldn't be cheap or play fastball - we had to be accurate to pay it respect. even if you're not writing historical fiction, it just gives you insight into how people behave.]
i would argue that the plot of dangerous crowns is actually not that complicated, maybe to its detriment. there's kind of a genre struggle going on. at voltage, we were taught romance fans came for the relationship beats and valued them above all else. in fact, leadership told us players got irritated - which meant less sales - when the plot was too complex and took time away from the making out. political thriller fans, by contrast, expect relentless twists, high stakes, and harsh consequences, and sometimes see the relationships as superfluous.
but whatever. the point is, when you look at dangerous crowns' structure, it's a pearl necklace: a chain of anchoring events. the "pearl" scenes are where Big Plot happens. they're the reason you want to write the story, and probably the ones you have the most vivid daydreams about. the scenes in between are the string. not flashy, but important because they connect the pearls. they build tension and add logic, cohesion, and context. take the opera and hector's failed assassination. those are pearl scenes. that's a burst of drama i really wanted the story to build up to. i also had other flashbulb visions. livia by the fountain questioning herself, marcus' macbeth moment, the temple riot, things like that. so the question was, how could i believably travel between these pearl scenes? how could i make these big showcase moments connect smoothly?
if you're having trouble holding the story together in your head, i would ask, "what are your pearls?" what are the anchor points? outline those. it might not look like a necklace yet, but you'll sort of see it taking shape. and then, once you can see where your heart's-desire milestones are, you'll have a clearer idea of what can't fire until you set it up first. two other neat things can happen here. you could find the rhythm of your pacing, or realize you have a lot more plot meat than you thought you did. even if you don't, you have some road. and if you can't think of the string, sometimes you just have to start writing the pearls and see what comes to you.

hey!! i know that post was probably made out of frustration but i think that person is trying to make it accessible for folks who need image descriptions but don’t/can’t use screenreaders. screenreader software can be expensive and having a description in the post itself or in a reblog in addition to in the alt text can make posts as accessible as possible. i don’t think they were ignoring the alt text out of malice or thinking you didn’t do enough, and i also think writing image description blogs off as gimmicks is unfair to them

Follow-up ask from same anon: "+ also like i don’t think they gave the best description in the world + could have just copied it out of the alt text with credit but likw. they weren’t being malicious on purpose yk" They didn't copy my alt text because they didn't check for it to begin with, and I know this because it was stated in a now deleted second reblog. I do not claim to be perfect at writing alt text and I am always working to improve at it, especially to keep it concise, on what are art pieces - I also try to keep up to date with different opinions and approaches for descriptions, since this changes over time as accessibility needs get reassessed. There was really good feedback I got on the 'favorite shape' embroidery I did, and I reworked the alt text on that one to make it better. The fact is that it's been a longstanding thing on my posts to call them undescribed when users simply do not check to see if it has the alt text. Very specifically, it's not checked to see if I am doing it in the first place. I am way more understanding of users who decide to copy my existing alt text, or who give me feedback on it to request parts be clearer.
There's always conversations to be had about accessibility. This was not a conversation, it was someone assuming I was not doing the bare minimum and trying to correct it without bothering to check, on a gimmick blog that talks about how it exists to improve accessibility. That is incredibly annoying to deal with. I don't make a scene on posts that are not mine because an OP doesn't deserve to deal with that, but on my own posts, yeah I will talk about how someone in fact didn't bother to check before adding a not great image description on my art.
Malicious or not, it's frustrating to continue to happen on my art, by users who do not need those access tools and so don't understand how they actually work to the point they do not bother to look if it was described, while saying they exist to solve a problem.
EDIT: Because this is sitting badly with me... like. guys, i've worked testing accessibility requirements. as a job. it was part of the testing ive had to do for websites. I know it came from a good place, but you gave me a post that is fully 5 years out of date about accessibility concerns, it was written in 2020. I understand wanting to keep it as a resource, but we're now 5 years past that and software moves on. I also have messaged the blog privately so we're not duking it out in public and pointed out where I was coming from on all it. I didn't reblog their other response because I wanted to actually talk to them about what happened.

How do I manage to cite thousands of photos?
I have officially passed 1,000 posts cited on this blog! That's 1000 posts of riots, exercises, mildly disgruntled guys in balaclavas, whatever.
If you were wondering if I do all the citing myself, you'd be correct! Every citation has been agonizingly researched by me. Is it a waste of time? Definitely. But I'm too far in to stop now...
However, it's not all by hand. I'm a software developer by trade, so I did make something to help with citation. Using the Tumblr API, these are the tools I made to make the process just a bit less painful!
You may have noticed all of my posts follow a certain format. Well, this is why! The citations view brings up my most recent unattributed post for me to add a citation to. Then, I can search multiple reverse image websites to find the source!
Google Lens is usually best for most things (even Russian pictures on VK and official military websites). TinEye is great for photos that are heavily cropped, or are stock, since they're sponsored by Adobe and Alamy. Everything else, including Yandex, kind of sucks.
I can also create new posts using this tool, which you've probably seen recently:
Throughout it all I've developed an auto tagging system that picks up on keywords inside the posts I write. This list goes on and on! Who knew there were so many special forces with three letter acronyms...

You may have seen me delete posts that you liked. That was the job of the duplicate remover, which helps me find and delete identical posts. Even I forget what I've reblogged...
Of course, I have to fetch all 6000 images first and compare them using a unique "perceptual hash", but... it's worth it!
Through all my editing, posting, sorting, and loading, I need to keep an eye on the Tumblr API limits. I can actually reach them with the amount of posts I'm making...
And that's pretty much it! I probably won't release the tool since I doubt anyone would actually want to waste time doing this, but I'm pretty proud of it.
I might make a post later about the things I've found, but here are some fun facts:
France and Germany make up almost half of my entire list. For reference, the USA is about 40!
137 posts are marked with #needs-attribution, or about one in ten. 14 are under #needs-more-info. The sources for these are lost to time :(
There's a limit of 1000 likes per day. I've reached it...
There's a limit of 1000 posts in the queue, which I've pretty much been at since I started this blog. However, my current "cited" backlog is about 10 days long at 25 posts per day.
I still have about 3500 posts left to go before everything's done...

Mediamancy: unknown armies updated class
Mediamancy is a mix of videomancy, and infomancy and a bit of bibliomancy (at least in my mind). It is the magic of using media as a conduit for casting spells. I have read the wiki page regarding mediamancy and have come to the conclusion that it is kinda warped in the sense that it can’t fully be adopted as a practice irl. So, with that in mind, I came up with a way to use it anyway (mainly cause I hate to be told no to things).
How to practice mediamancy:
Media as charms: I have taken to carrying around thumb drives with folders full of videos and photos and books that I simply insert into my phone or computer and plug in. A few minutes of tapping in allows me to feel revitalized and ready to zap. Without these, I feel kinda naked in a way.
Images and archetypes as glamours: imagine copying and pasting psychic imagery over your aura to allow for you to enhance certain talents you have or provide you with base skills. That is what this is. Granted it’s an illusion but it is still very useful.
Music as potions: I’ve beaten this one to death, see any of my other posts on cybermancy or pop culture magic.
News articles as bibliomancy: pretty self explanatory.
The key to mediamancy is to always be plugged in somehow.
Tools of a mediamancer
- thumb drives and ssd hard drives: it may just be me, but I’m obsessed with storage devices and storage space. This way I can carry all my stuff with me and not have to worry.
- smartphone: this is like my wand, my scrying mirror and my grimoire all rolled into one.
- portable charger: a good charger is the best way to make sure your phone doesn’t run out of battery. If you’re like me, then you would want to carry at least two chargers and a wall plug to charge the chargers.
- phone attachments and accessories: camera add ons, usb dongles, stylus, Bluetooth earbuds and other add ons are all useful for various functionalities of mediamancy since you’re not just consuming media but creating it too.
- a good bag to carry it all
Software tools of a mediamancer
- streaming services: kinda essential, but at least one good streaming service is required or a free service that gives you the feel of tv watching.
- blogging platform: for those who embrace the written media, this is a good way to work with social media sorcery and literary magic
- news app: I recommend google news since it’s free
- writing software: I recommend scrivener because it’s a writer’s dream space.
Voice notes app: in lieu of a voice recorder, a voice notes app is good for making vocal spells and recording conversations for making media based spells using audio as ingredients.
Music streaming service: at the very least it’s good to boost energy if nothing else. I recommend YouTube music due to the wide range of ambient music available.
- e-reader app: this is essential for literary mediamancy since books are always being written. I recommend kindle since almost everyone has a smartphone and an Amazon account and there are tons of free books you can get from it. If you have an Amazon account then you have a kindle account.
Video game emulator: mostly for nostalgic purposes, this can be turned into a way to practice Ludomancy (video game magic).

Weirdly Motivated to Write



Well, I did say that I have a new keyboard—to correct my posture and not look like a pretzel while I work remotely. Small victories, right?
Now, let’s talk about motivation. Because for some reason, I am absolutely buzzing with it today. Is it because of my keyboard? Most likely. Is that weird? Probably. But hey, I never claimed to be normal.
See, besides being a full-time student, I also have a job. And that job? Writing. Creating. Capturing life in words, pictures, and fleeting moments of inspiration. Filming, writing, photography—these are the things that make me absolutely happy. And honestly? Life is just too beautiful not to share.
There’s something about having the right tools that makes everything feel different. You could give me the exact same blank document yesterday, and I wouldn’t have been nearly as eager to write as I am today. But now? With my new keyboard? I feel like I could churn out a whole novel, rewrite history, or at the very least, write an unnecessarily long blog post about why I feel like writing.
Maybe it’s the clickity-clackity. (Yes, that’s a technical term.) There’s just something deeply satisfying about hearing each keystroke, like a tiny round of applause with every word I type. It’s hypnotizing. Encouraging. Addictive, even. Without it, I don’t think I’d be half as motivated to write.

Could this mean my iPad will replace my laptop?
Ha! Not a chance. Never. Not in a million years.
As much as I love this setup, there are things my iPad just cannot do. And honestly, those things make a huge difference in my daily workflow. Don’t get me wrong—iPads are fantastic. They’re lightweight, portable, and perfect for quick notes, reading, or sketching. But when it comes to serious work? My Windows laptop remains irreplaceable.

When bizarre and misleading answers to search queries generated by Google’s new AI Overview feature went viral on social media last week, the company issued statements that generally downplayed the notion the technology had problems. Late Thursday, the company’s head of search, Liz Reid, admitted that the flubs had highlighted areas that needed improvement, writing, “We wanted to explain what happened and the steps we’ve taken.” Reid’s post directly referenced two of the most viral, and wildly incorrect, AI Overview results. One saw Google's algorithms endorse eating rocks because doing so “can be good for you,” and the other suggested using nontoxic glue to thicken pizza sauce.
Rock eating is not a topic many people were ever writing or asking questions about online, so there aren't many sources for a search engine to draw on. According to Reid, the AI tool found an article from The Onion, a satirical website, that had been reposted by a software company, and it misinterpreted the information as factual.
As for Google telling its users to put glue on pizza, Reid effectively attributed the error to a sense of humor failure. “We saw AI Overviews that featured sarcastic or troll-y content from discussion forums,” she wrote. “Forums are often a great source of authentic, first-hand information, but in some cases can lead to less-than-helpful advice, like using glue to get cheese to stick to pizza.”
It’s probably best not to make any kind of AI-generated dinner menu without carefully reading it through first.
Reid also suggested that judging the quality of Google’s new take on search based on viral screenshots would be unfair. She claimed the company did extensive testing before its launch and that the company’s data shows people value AI Overviews, including by indicating that people are more likely to stay on a page discovered that way.
Why the embarassing failures? Reid characterized the mistakes that won attention as the result of an internet-wide audit that wasn’t always well intended. “There’s nothing quite like having millions of people using the feature with many novel searches. We’ve also seen nonsensical new searches, seemingly aimed at producing erroneous results.” Google claims some widely distributed screenshots of AI Overviews gone wrong were fake, which seems to be true based on WIRED’s own testing. For example, a user on X posted a screenshot that appeared to be an AI Overview responding to the question “Can a cockroach live in your penis?” with an enthusiastic confirmation from the search engine that this is normal. The post has been viewed over 5 million times. Upon further inspection, though, the format of the screenshot doesn’t align with how AI Overviews are actually presented to users. WIRED was not able to recreate anything close to that result.
And it's not just users on social media who were tricked by misleading screenshots of fake AI Overviews. The New York Times issued a correction to its reporting about the feature and clarified that AI Overviews never suggested users should jump off the Golden Gate Bridge if they are experiencing depression—that was just a dark meme on social media. “Others have implied that we returned dangerous results for topics like leaving dogs in cars, smoking while pregnant, and depression,” Reid wrote Thursday. “Those AI Overviews never appeared.”
Yet Reid’s post also makes clear that not all was right with the original form of Google’s big new search upgrade. The company made “more than a dozen technical improvements” to AI Overviews, she wrote.
Only four are described: better detection of “nonsensical queries” not worthy of an AI Overview; making the feature rely less heavily on user-generated content from sites like Reddit; offering AI Overviews less often in situations users haven’t found them helpful; and strengthening the guardrails that disable AI summaries on important topics such as health.
There was no mention in Reid’s blog post of significantly rolling back the AI summaries. Google says it will continue to monitor feedback from users and adjust the features as needed.
