#Bones Imagine
Note
can I please get headcannons for the bones boys taking you out on a first date? Thank you so much for writing for bones!
A/N: anything for my bones boys
Tumblr media
Booth would definitely do something unconventional. Something fun, unexpected, something that was a bit competitive, but mostly something where he could show off.
"Really?" you almost laughed as you stood in front of the entrance. "The fair?"
"Oh, come on. When was the last time you did something like this?" He nudged you on your shoulder, wagging his eyebrows at you.
He would then proceed to win you a giant stuffed bear at the duck shoot.
"What?" he shrugged nonchalantly, "Like's hard?"
"Not for you apparently," you teased. "Though I expect being a ranger turned FBI agent probably helps."
You started walking backwards enjoying the challenging look in his eyes.
"Are you trying to rial me up?" he questioned, smirking at you.
You leaned in close to him, enjoying the way his breathing increased. "Depends, how easy do you fluster?"
You pulled away, making your way towards the ring toss.
"Oh, I see how it is," Booth shouted as he trailed after you, slinging his arm over your shoulder.
The first date with Booth would solely about getting to know you, making you laugh, and gauging just how comfortable he could be around you. It would absolutely end with him being a giant tease and kissing you on the corner of your mouth or your temple.
Tumblr media
Hodgins, rich (so rich he doesn't even know how rich), Hodgins would try and impress you. At least that was his first thought. Private and obscenely expensive dinner? Check. Expensive car to get you there? Check.
But like many things in Jack's life, it never really went according to plan.
"Oh, come on!" Jack grumbled at the flat tire. "I just had the car serviced. I can't believe this."
It was only when you started laughing that he relaxed enough to look at you.
"What?" He asked a bit in disbelief. Crushing thoughts about how this was the worst first date to never actually even start diminished at the sight your smile.
"I don't think I've seen you this stressed since you tried to hide TNT experiment from Cam," you said laughter dying down.
"Hey, that civil war exhibit didn't need it as much as us," he reasoned, a smile now stretching across his own face as he leaned against his car.
You mirrored his movements, shoulder pressed against his as you leaned against the car.
"I wanted this to be perfect. But just about everything seems to have gone wrong."
"Well, it's a good thing the night isn't over yet," you looked around. "You know, I think we're close to the diner."
"You can't be serious," he laughed. A mixture of disbelief and awe.
"Dead. I never needed anything fancy anyways - just you Jack."
From that moment, he knew that he wasn't ever going to mess it up. You were it for him.
Tumblr media
Sweets would want to do anything where the two of you could just talk. We know he's done a pottery class before so something along those lines. Really anything where he got to just look at you with a big grin on his face and listen to every word that came out of your mouth.
"Lance?"
"Yeah?"
"Your chicken is burning."
"Oh, shit."
You let out a laugh that made him forget all about the charred chicken. He, in hindsight, should have known better than to plan a cooking class as your first date. Not when you distracted him so easily he could chop a finger off. Definitely not his best idea.
"Here, we can just share mine," you said as you fed him some of your food. All teasing smiles and delicious prolonged eye contact.
Definitely not his worst date idea.
Tumblr media
Wendell is one for simplicity. He wants to get to know you, but he also doesn't want to go overboard and scare you off. He'd plan for a simple dinner (your pick) and make a walk around the city.
The street lights illuminated the city, a cool breeze rushing past you. You tried your best not to seem cold - you'd opted for looks- not practically. Now you were paying the price for it.
A sudden rush of warm hit you, you looked up at Wendell who'd wordlessly placed his jacket over your shoulders.
"Wendell-"
"Don't even mention it. Can't have you getting sick now, can I?" He gently nudged your shoulder with his own as you walked side by side. "Wouldn't want you to rain check the next date."
"The next one?" you prodded - warmth washing over your cheeks. "Someone is presumptuous," you teased.
"Nah, just optimistic," He smiled brightly at you. "So, what do ya say?"
"I think your odds are looking pretty good," you looped your arm to hold on to his.
Wendell wouldn't necessarily consider himself a betting man, but he'd say he won out on this one.
Tumblr media
Vincent was quiet sure how he'd managed it. It was all a bit of blur if he was honest. One second you both were discussing how no number before a thousand contains the letter a, and the next he had asked you out. And you'd said yes.
He almost thought he'd dreampt it, really. You'd had to call out his name twice before he blinked himself back into reality.
Now he stood in front of your door holding flowers that were wilting away by the second - he swore he'd just gotten them and they looked pristine.
He let out a sigh, knuckles frozen over the door. This would be, fine. You already said yes. Oh, God.
Knuckles knocking against the door, he frantically smoothed out his hair.
"Vincent!"
You leaned in for a hug, crushing the flowers, but he couldn't bring himself to care. You pulled away giving him this brilliant smile that put him at ease.
"Are those for me?"
"Wha- yes. Yes, they are for you." He handed you the roses. "Did you know over 30,000 rose varieties exist today?"
You let out a small laugh, eyes still sparkling. "I didn't, but thank you for telling me."
That smile of your really did put him at ease. This would be fine - this would be great - because he was with you.
Tumblr media
When Colin asked you to go out with him to the Slasherthon at the local movie theater he wasn't actually sure you'd say yes. But he figured the worst you could say was no - or you know, laugh at him until he fell into an endless abyss of shame.
Either would be fine.
He expected the abyss.
He did not expect you to say yes. Let alone actually show up. But there you were in a Jason Voorhees t-shirt all smiles as he walked up to you.
"Are you ready for lots of gore and eating our weight in popcorn?" You asked practically bouncing on the balls of your feet. He'd never seen anything more lively or beautiful in his life.
"A person after my own heart," he said dramatically - hand placed over his own heart.
"Come on, Colin," you grabbed his hand pulling him into the theater. As you led him away he realized the abyss option would have been much worse than he had anticipated.
You were a light shining into his abyss.
Tumblr media
Aubrey would take you to a nice sit down restaurant. He spent the better half of the week trying to decide where exactly to take you. He'd finally settled on a restaurant you had been talking about trying for a month now.
"Aubrey, how did you know I wanted to eat here?" You asked, leaning forward. Your eyes excitedly bouncing between the menu and Aubrey.
"You've been talking about it," he shrugged, trying his hardest to be nonchalant about it.
"Aubrey- I mentioned it once, like, a month ago." You laughed a bit in disbelief.
"And?"
"And how do you remember something like that?"
"It sounded important to you, why wouldn't I want to remember it?"
He'd be lying if he didn't say he enjoyed that look on your face. A mixture of disbelief and being heard - actually heard.
"Now, I'm thinking we go family style on this bad boy and see what all the fuss is about." Aubrey leaned forward, both of you so close to the other. If the flowers in the middle of the table weren't in the way he just might have leaned in for kiss.
"You sure you can leave some food for me?" You teased, your eyes sparkling in a way that made Aubrey realize he never wanted to see your eyes without it.
"Sweetheart, I'd leave all of it for you if you asked."
"Liar," you laughed.
"Alright some of it, but that's better than none!"

Booth x Teen!reader - a little hyper
Tumblr media
is it possible that you can write a Booth! X ADHD teenage reader? I don’t exactly have a plot in mind but the reader is either stimming or just very fidgety - @alexandriathewolfyt 💜
Sitting in the interrogation room, you kicked your feet up on the table, using them to push yourself back so you could sing in your chair.
You were tossing a stress ball up and down in your head, trying to hit it off the ceiling.
After a few minutes and the ball rolling across the room, you got up, walking around the table a few times you walked over to the mirror.
You stood there, then leant back, throwing your head forehead to headbutt the glass, grinning a little.
“Come on, I’m bored, stop watching me that’s creepy.”
You pushed yourself away, and you made your way to the door, opening it to peak outside, finding a few agents watching you.
Frowning, you slowly closed the door again and picked up your ball, climbing on the table as you began throwing to upwards again.
Booth stood on the other side of the glass just watching you.
“Seriously, I spent have the morning having to chase them around the hallways of the school, and they still have energy?”
“It’s ADHD booth, (Y/N) has an excessive amount of energy and a difficulty concentrating. It can also present in outbursts of anger or disruptive behaviour, loss of concentration, impulsive thoughts.” Brennan said.
“Right well I need to go in there and stop this before somebody gets hurt, can you find sweets, maybe he can crack the hyper code.”
With that booth left, and when he walked into the room he was hit in the face with a ball.
A silence fell over the room.
“Sorry…?” You grinned a little.
He picked up the ball and walked in, gesturing for you to jump down from the table so you did and he handed it back.
“Trying to make your great escape?” Booth asked.
“Not yet, but maybe soon this is boring. Do you have snacks? Or soda?”
“Yes to both, but only if you answer my questions.”
“That’s bribery you’re not allowed to do that.”
“I’m not allowed to accept them, there’s a difference kid. Sit.”
“Wouldn’t that like be morally wrong?”
Booth sat down, looking up at you.
“Isn’t running from a federal agent morally wrong?”
“Nah man that’s just wrong.” You beamed.
He gestured to the seat and you sat down, tapping your hands on the table.
“Are you taking your medication?” He asked.
“How’d you know?”
“Bones found your prescription bottle in the reception, you got it a few months ago but it’s still closed.”
“I’ve been busy, I forget. I forgot my lunch all this week.”
He nodded his head, setting a photo down in front of you.
“Do you know him?”
“Yeah, science teacher I think, he hated me. A lot of teachers do, but I’m cool with that, when can I get my sweater back?”
“Right now it’s evidence.”
You groaned loudly and leant back in your chair again.
“If you fall that’s not my issue.” Booth said, “I just need you to answer a few more questions.”
You leant forward, resting your hands on the table, drumming them a little bit.
He asked a few questions which you answered and he stood up, opening the door and blocked the doorway.
“You’re not gonna run off?”
“Not yet.”
He sighed, gesturing for you to follow him and you did.
Booth took you to his office and he gestured to the man and woman sitting inside.
“You know Bones, that’s sweets. Stay here.”
With that he left and you looked at Sweets as he held out a bottle to you.
“These belong to you.”
“Eh keep em, I don’t need them. What’s this?”
You picked something up and then set it down.
“You have a lot of energy, is there anything you do to burn your excess energy?” Brennan asked.
You shrugged a little bit, exploring more of the office until you grew bored and began throwing your ball again.
“Here.”
Booth handed you a can of soda and some snacks, pointing to the chair.
You sat down, opening the chips and watched as he took the other two out of the room so he could talk to them.
After a few minutes Booth walked back in.
“Good news, you’re now in my care until after the case.”
“Why?”
“Because I said so, so grab your stuff and let’s go.”
“Where?”
“I’m taking you back to school, and you’re not going to run away because I’ll have agents placed around the school to keep an eye on you.”
You grumbled a little, slouching more into the chair.
Booth crossed his arms, looking at you.
“Are we really going to have troubles this early?”
“Come on man! Let me stay! I’ll behave!”
Booth narrowed his eyes a little bit, and he sat down on his desk, taking some of the chips from the bag you were eating.
“I hear you like to run.”
“Yeah, on track team.”
“Alright, let’s go down to the gym then.”
“Really?!”
Booth grabbed your bag.
“Yeah, let’s see if you’re really as fast as they say you are.”
You ran straight towards the elevator.
You had a lot of energy you needed to burn, and Booth needed you to burn as much as you possible could.
He was also hoping that in doing something you liked he could learn a little more about you and maybe you could offer more useful information about the case.
You were a good kid, just hyper and misunderstood by everybody else but booth could see that you just really wanted to be seen as an ordinary teenager

Tumblr media
"Shh," he interrupted, his fingers pressing against your lips. "No need for words. Just let me see you, truly see you."
The tears continued to fall, and Sweets' smile grew a bit wider. He cradled your face with both hands now, his touch possessive and invasive. "That's it," he whispered, his voice soft and gentle.
Sweets' eyes glowed with satisfaction. "So beautiful," he murmured, his voice thick with longing. "I could watch you cry forever."

Hey Baby
Tumblr media
Summary; Jack writes you a letter for your anniversary. A/N; Requests are open! Credit @cafekitsune for the banner and the divider
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Today we've been together for five years. I can't believe how much time has passed. It feels like yesterday when we first met in that cafe you love so much. I owe Greta, so much.
Nice girl, she told me. In the end, she pushed me to ask you out. Stop your gawping and do something about it. She's the reason, I gathered up the courage to talk to you.
These past five years have been my favourite. At times it's not been easy, but what relationship is. I truly believe the things which are most benefical and rewarding are not supposed to be straightforward.
I look forward to many sunrises and sunsets with you. To more exporations of new places. To many more fights and make up's.
I want it all. The good, the bad and the ugly. Only with the most incrediable, beautiful, talented, funny, woman in the world.
All my love,
Jack x

A Vulcan Smile Part Seven
[Part One] [Part Two] [Part Three] [Part Four] [Part Five] [Part Six]
Tumblr media
Jim looked up from his computer as the door to his ready room swished open. He had stolen away to the ship to get some much-needed quiet to review his notes before his next meeting. A quiet he was surprised to see emanating from his best friend as he made his way across the room.
Leonard typically preferred to make his presence in a room known, entering with a joke or a complaint or some kind of combination of the two. Now he took a seat across from Jim in complete silence. The captain looked him over, trying to identify where this change was coming from. He wore crumpled shirt and an unreadable expression.
"Is that the same uniform as yesterday?" Jim finally asked.
"Didn't have time to change."
"You've been off duty for twelve hours, Bones. How long does it take? You wear the same thing everyday," Jim pointed out.
"I was helping Joanna with her homework and then," Leonard's voice dropped slightly, "I was with (Y/N)."
Jim’s brows raised. "Were you?"
"Apologizing," Leonard clarified.
"And what did you do that required you to apologize all night long?" Jim's words tiptoed around innuendo.
"Joanna was suspended for starting a fight."
"So you were apologizing for your part in bringing another angry McCoy into the universe," Jim guessed.
"I didn't react well to the news," Leonard admitted. "Started a fight of my own."
"That doesn't sound like you," Jim said sarcastically.
“I blamed her. Told her that Joanna was picking up violant tendencies from her,” Leonard explained.
Jim let out a disappointed breath. He didn’t know you well, but he had heard so much about you through long winded, sporadic rants from Leonard that he could guess how well that went over. He certainly knew enough about people in general to know that wasn’t something you said to someone who cared gor your child.
“She blamed me. Told me Joanna was acting out because she’s hurt that I left and doesn’t know how to express it.” Leonard slumped back in the chair. “Apparently I don’t put in enough effort as a father.”
“Well,” Jim started pointedly. He raised his brows and tilted his head, hoping if he made a strong enough facial expression he wouldn’t have to finish the thought out loud.
“When were you planning to tell me you though I was a bad father?”
Jim let out a breathy chuckle at his friends dramatics. “I don’t think you’re a bad father. I think that (Y/N) spends a lot of time with Joanna and if she thinks she’s feeling a little abandoned then she might know what she’s talking about.”
Leonard sighed. “I know.”
“What are you going to do about it?”
“I already apologized.”
This earned Leonard a look that told him he needed to do better than that.
“I suppose I don’t really have a choice.”
“Not if you ever want to be able to respect yourself again.”
Leonard groaned and rubbed a hand across his face. “I’m not cut out for this.”
“You said the same thing the first time you had to work on a ship. Now look at you.”
“Now look at me,” Leonard repeated in a defeated tone.
“You know-” Jim waited until his friend was looking at him again to finish, “Centaurus isn’t that far out of our way.”
“Oh no.” Leonard shook his head and held up a hand. “This ship is on red alert every other thursday. My eleven year old isn’t going to be involved in that.”
“We’d be taking a similar course to the shuttle. Any dangers we run into they’d probably run into too. Wouldn’t you prefer she run into them with you?”
“I’d rather she not be in space at all, but seeing as I wasn’t given a choice in that…” Leonard trailed of, thinking it over. “You wouldn’t mind the detour?”
“Not at all.”
“You know letting my daughter and Spock’s sister loose on this ship might lead to more chaos than we’re prepared for.”
Jim shook his head. “Spock’s gonna hate this.”
“You don’t have to convice me, Jim. I’m alread on board.”
-
“Tell me again,” Leonard ordered as he walked with Joanna to the Enterprise.
“The warp core, jefferies tubes, and bridge are off limits. If red lights start flashing I am to stay in my room. If I hear the word ‘anomoly’ over the comms, I am to find you in the sickbay. If I see more than five people in uniform running in the halls I am to find Ms. Grayson and wait for the all clear. No wandering the halls or entering the recreation deck or holodeck alone. No fun of any kind,” Joanna rattled off.
“Good. Stick to those rules and you should make it back home in one piece.”
“Can’t I have a little fun?”
“Being a passenger on the Enterprise is-”
“Not a reward for punching my classmate even if he is a shithead and desereved it,” she parroted the words he’d used when he explained the arrangement to her. “I’ve gotten like two lectures a day since I was suspended, thrown up on during a shuttle ride here, and given four times the calc homework I would normally have. Haven’t I been punished enough?”
“We’re not punishing you. We’re making sure you’ve learned your lesson. We don’t want you to turn into a violent drop out with no direction in life and a long arrest record.”
“You’re say ‘we’ a lot about you and Ms. Grayson,” she pointed out.
“Oh look! Lieutenant Uhura.” Leonard quickly changed the subject, coming to a stop outside the air lock where the Lieutenant was standing. “Waiting for Spock?”
“He’s just saying goodbye.” She nodded over to where he stood with you and Serek.
“Good might be a stretch,” Leonard mumbled.
“Who are they talking to?” Joanna asked.
“The Vulcan ambassador,” Nyota answered.
“They don’t seem to like him.”
“It’s a complicated relationship,” she said, watching the three of you hold up Vulcan salutes.
As the ambassador turned and boarded another ship, you folded down you pinky and ring finger and lifted your raised fingers to your temple. Your head jerked to the side as you pretended to shoot yourself in the head. To Leonard's suprise, Spock used his hand to wipe your imaginary blood from the side of his face.
The two of you walked in silence to meet the others. You both had your hands clasped behind your back, but as you got closer yours moved to swing at your side.
Uhura watched the way Leonard smiled and then stiffened awkwardly as you approached.
“Come on let’s get out of here before Spock and I are used as a visual aid in another debate about the future of the Vulcan race,” you said when you reach them. “If I get called V’tosh ka’tur one more time, I’m going to start throwing things.”
“That kind of behavior is exactly why they call you V’tosh ka’tur,” Spock pointing out.
“Don’t call your sister a Vulcan without logic, Spock,” Uhura chastised.
“Thank you. Wanting to throw things at those stuffy, xenophobic elders is completely logical,” you argued. “And besides they call you V’tosh ka’tur too.”
Spock mouth dropped open. “I am not V’tosh ka’tur. I follow the ancestral teachings.”
“But you stink like a human.”
“You are using nasal supresants. You don’t know what I smell like.”
Leonard leaned forward and took a wiff. “No, she’s right. Just like a human.”
You smiled at the doctor. “This is going to be a fun little trip.”
Joanna grinned. Spock’s jaw tightened.

Stardate: 2020
A/N: this was actually written in 2020. I don't feel like changing it. this one may have actually been posted on my old Tumblr- I can't remember but I am locked out of it permanently but Tumblr so I can't check. welp- suppose a repost won't hurt. I like it still.
Word count: 591
Prompt: "shh, it's okay now, you're safe, I'm here."
A resounding crack vibrates through the ship, pulsing waves rocking it like a boat on the water. The captain swallows his rising impatience as he can barely hear over the resounding roar of the emergency systems clicking into place. Everyone's eyes are trained outside the window, looking around, expecting some sort of enemy. Pulling himself to his feet, Kirk shakes off the way touching his chair seems to allow excess energy to route through his veins.
"Scans, Mr. Sulu." He calls, his voice barely heard, but understood.
"No surrounding ships, sir." He states, voice raised to be heard over the alarms, just as it quits sounding. For just a moment, there is silence on the bridge, kirk fighting a small smile at the timing.
"Mr. Scott!" He calls again, waiting for the familiar thick accent to call back. "What's going on down there?" His eyes are still scanning the horizon, looking for abnormalities.
"A couple of friends circuit's, captain. Whatever that was, all it affected was the air cooling system."
Theres a pause.
"Its going to get hot in here until I can get this figured out."
"Understood." Slowly, he turns back to chekov and sulu, nodding to them. "Anything?"
"A lot of excess electricity, sir, but still no ships."
"Sensors are reading the source to be behind us, captain." Natoya states, sulu taking his cue to turn the ship.
"Is that…?"
"An electrical storm… in space." Bones finished, everyone having been so preoccupied they didn't register the door sliding open.
Silence washes over the bridge crew again, in awe as they watch lightning crack across the surface of the storm, purple and blue clouds twisting and spinning.
"Uh, Captain." Scottys voice calls out again, an odd tension in the engineers voice.
"Yes, Mr. Scott." Kirk calls back, tearing his eyes from the image before him.
"You need to get down here… and being the good doctor, would ya?" Just before he cuts off, he swears he heard scotty speak to someone. Without so much as a glance, kirk, bones and spock race down to engineering, assuming nothing, and expecting everything.
But, whatever they were expecting, it wasnt this.
A young girl sat curled under scottys desk, trembling from every limb, clenching one of scottys screwdrivers like a knife, eyes like saucers.
"Where… where am I?" She asks slowly, trying, and failing, to hide the tremble in her voice.
"The Enterprise." Her eyebrows pinch as her eyes dart between her newest company before they stick to Spock, drawing in a shaky breath.
"The what?"
Bones bends down to her level slowly, hands up to show that they're empty.
"My names McCoy, Leonard McCoy, but my friends call me Bones. I'm a doctor." He assures, she nods slowly, tearing her eyes from Spock to face Bones. "What's your name, kid?"
Swallowing, she closes her eyes for a moment, sound slipping past her lips sounding almost like a whimper. "Ellie."
"Alright… Ellie," Kirk interjects, voice softening, seeing the fear in her eyes. "How did you get on the ship?"
"I… I dont know. One moment, in the house of mirrors with my friends, riding out a storm, and the next, I'm here."
Kirk and Spock share a look as Bones approaches her slowly, light in hand. "Alright sugar, you're okay now. You're here, you're safe," He begins. "I just want to check you out. She nods, letting him look in her eyes.
"Can you tell me what the stardate is?" Her eyebrows pinch, again.
"Stardate?"
"The year, honey." She pauses, answering confidently.
"2020."

so I’ve seen lots of fics about Bruce coming back and finding out things like Tim loosing his spleen or Damian getting shot (on multiple occasions by different people) and he almost always finds out by either having dug into the Batcomputers records and stumbling across it or just seeing it on scans or something after Tim or Damian is injured
but imagine for a moment Bruce finds out, not on his own, but by the others telling him.
And by “tell him” I of course mean that they all automatically assume that he already knows about all of it(because he’s the worlds greatest detective so obviously they don’t need to say anything) so they never bring it up until they mention it one day in passing and nearly give him a heart attack.
for example:
Bruce: Tim, I need you to come with me to speak with Dr. Thompkins down at the clinic about that new drug that’s been circulating
Tim: Oh, sure thing, just let me grab my mask
[Bruce not saying anything but looking at him confused because Tim is already fully suited up and wearing his domino mask?]:
[Tim, now wearing a surgical face mask]: Ok, I’m ready! [Bruce just staring at him, waiting for some explanation. He doesn’t get one.]:
Bruce: Tim
Tim: hm?
Bruce: Why are you wearing a face mask..?
Tim: Oh! Well Dr. Thompkins got mad at me last time I came to the clinic without one because there’s a lot of sick people there and I should be more careful since I’m immunocompromised-
[Bruce, immediately cutting him off]: Wait, what?
[Tim, slightly confused]: She got mad at me when I didn’t wear one last time..?
[Bruce, equally confused and growing very concerned]: No, not that. You’re immunocompromised?
[Tim, now completely lost because this is all common knowledge?]: Uh, yeah??
[Bruce, even more concerned]: How??? What do you mean??
[Tim, getting annoyed and rolling his eyes]: Well that’s what they call you when you have no spleen, Bruce.
Bruce: What.
[Tim finally realizing that, just maybe, they skipped a step]: I have no spleen? It got stabbed so Ra’s took it
[Bruce, about to have an aneurysm]: RA’S DID WHAT-
______ Or like him finding out Damian had his entire spine replaced
Bruce: Hey, do you think it’s strange Damian’s so small?
Dick: No?? He’s ten?? Ten year olds are small?
[Bruce, audibly concerned]: No, I mean don’t you think he should have grown some by now? Is he not eating enough?
[Dick, immediately relaxing]: Oh, that? Yeah, it’s fine
[Bruce, still concerned]: Are you sure? I was taller than that at his age
[Dick, waving his hand dismissively]: Nah, he’s fine. I think the spine replacement just stunted his growth a bit
Bruce:…
Dick:..?
[Bruce, near hysterically because all his kids somehow keep losing pieces of their insides and none of them seem bothered by it??]: his wHAT- ____
Dick has to spend the next several hours trying to stop Bruce from making everyone do a mandatory medical examination so he can make sure none of his other kids are missing anything
Dick promises that it was just the two things
Bruce is not reassured

Booth x reader - close call
Tumblr media
You weren’t sure how it happened, one moment you were standing next to Booth, the next you were stood there, completely frozen in your spot.
He didn’t seem to notice you weren’t following him anymore, and you stumbled back a few steps while he stepped forward to the body of the person who had shot at you.
“B..booth…” you mumbled.
“What?”
He slowly approached the corner, and you placed a hand over your side, putting as much pressure on the wound as you could.
“Where’s Brennan?” You asked.
“She should be up ahead, go back and send uniforms down here when they get here!”
You nodded your head, turning around to head back towards the entrance of the building.
You stumbled a few steps, catching yourself on the doorway.
Standing up, you pushed yourself out of the building, and you walked a few steps to the side, spitting some blood on to the floor.
Pulling your hand away, you looked at your bloody hand, placing it back on the wound and you turned around as you heard shouting of your name.
“You could’ve gotten Bones killed!” Booth snapped.
You opened your mouth but closed it again, turning your attention to the ground instead.
“You gave us all away, and put someone in the line of fire!”
Booth marched over, fury in his eyes as he stared at you.
“Booth!”
He stopped, turning around to Brennan who ran over to him, pointing to the floor.
He saw the droplets of blood, some spots seemed to have more than others, showing where you had stopped and then carried on walking.
“He wasn’t aiming for me Booth.” Brennan said quietly.
“Call for backup, now! And get whatever we need to keep (Y/N) alive!”
Booth ran over to you, and he placed a hand on your shoulder, and you grabbed him arm.
He could hear your pained breathing, and he could feel your hand trembling.
“Hey.. hey you’re okay…”
You slumped against him, and he quickly lowered you to the floor, resting your back against his chest.
“Woah, easy. Okay..”
Booth looked down at you, bringing his hand up to cover yours, putting more pressure on your wound.
His other hand came up, and he paced it on your shoulder, wrapping you in a kind of hug, holding you closely against himself.
“You’re okay… it’s okay…” he whispered.
“I..I’m sorry.. I’m so sorry…”
Booth rested his chin on your head.
“It’s okay… it’s okay…” he whispered.
He looked up to where Brennan was in by the car digging through some things.
“Bones hurry up!”
He looked at his hand over yours, and the amount of blood in his skin.
“(Y/N) keep talking to me, keep talking okay… stay awake for me..”
You didn’t reply, and he moved to the side a little bit to look at you.
Blood seeping from your lips, eyes closed and your body nearly falling to the ground.
“No, no, no, (Y/N)?”
Booth gently shook you.
“(Y/N)!”
Booth didn’t know what to do, and he looked up to Brennan who was running back with everything.
“Bones help me!” He yelled.
“Lay her down!” Brennan yelled.
He did as he was told and carefully laid you on your back, and he fell down, bringing a hand to cover his mouth.
Sitting on his knees, he brought a trembling hand to your face, placing his palm on your cheek, running a thumb along your skin.
“Booth I need you to hold here.”
Brennan took his hands and pressed them firmly over the wound, and she began CPR on you.
It didn’t seem like long, but for Booth it felt like forehead until help arrived and you were taken away.
He rushed to the hospital and he stood in the waiting room alone, covered in your blood until he was dragged away to finish the case.
But as soon as the actual killer confessed, booth was straight back to the hospital to get any information about your condition that he could.
“Booth! How is she?” Angela asked.
“I.. I don’t know, nobody will tell me anything, it’s been hours since she was admitted.”
“Just give them time Seeley.” Cam sighed.
He slammed his hand on the desk.
“I don’t have time!”
“You blame yourself, that’s okay. But this isn’t your fault, there was nothing you could have done to stop that man firing at (Y/N), getting angry won’t make them give you news any faster.” Sweets said.
Booth glared at the younger man, and he made his way back outside, sitting on the curb in front of the hospital.
Booth ran a hand down his face, tears burning his eyes, and he cleared his throat a little bit, blinked a few times to clear the tears.
He stayed outside for a few moments before he stood up, heading back inside.
They all sat waiting for any update on you.
“You can’t blame yourself man.” Hodgins whispered.
“It’s my fault, she shouldn’t have even been there. I should’ve known not to bring her.” Booth said lowly.
“Come on, you know (Y/N) wouldn’t want you to blame yourself.” Sweets said.
“What if she doesn’t make it…?” He asked.
Everybody looked at him but nobody knew what to say to him. They didn’t know how to comfort him, because how did you comfort somebody who was waiting to find out if someone they cared about died or not.
And that’s all he was thinking about.
What if you died?
Booth looked at his hands, and all he could see was your blood staining his skin even though he scrubbed them over and over again.
Sure, he’d had blood on his hands before, but knowing your blood had literally been on his hands was different.
“(Y/N) (L/N)?”
Everybody stood up, and booth was at the front of everybody.
“It’s been hours, why haven’t anybody given us any updates?” He asked.
“Because we haven’t been able to give one with any certainty.”
“I can’t care what you do or don’t have, when the FBI asked for an update you give them a damn update!” Booth yelled.
“Woah, okay. Maybe let’s not yell at the doctors trying to save our friend.” Angela said.
Booth stared at the doctor who took an unsure step backwards.
“Sorry… we uh.. honestly right now it doesn’t look good. The bullet was a clean shot, but (Y/N) didn’t fall, she walked, and it moved the bullet meaning it caused more damage, and some of the fragments went elsewhere. We’re doing all we can and I’ll come with another update soon.”
With that he ran away and booth went back to his feet, staring his hands as he waited.
Hours passed and finally the doctor came back out.
“We’ve got her stable, but she’s still critical. There was a lot of damage but right now things are looking good.”
Everybody was taken to your room, and while the others stood around your bed, Booth stood on the other side of the room watching you.
You were unnaturally pale, you still had dirt and dried blood on your face.
“Booth…?” Brennan asked.
He shook his head and walked away.
When he came back, everybody had gone, and he set his bag down in the chair opening it.
He pulled out some wipes and he walked over, taking one out of the pack and he sat on the bed next to you.
He reached out, his hand shaking a little bit, and he stopped himself.
Taking a deep breath, he worked at carefully cleaning your skin of the dirt and the dried blood.
When he was done, he cleaned your hands and arms, and he went through his bag again.
He pulled out some of the things he took from your office, your favourite photo, your favourite cushion, and a few other things to decorate the room.
Walking back over, he lifted your head and placed the cushion under it, sitting next to you again.
“I know you can’t sleep without it…” he mumbled.
Booth brushed some hair from your face, leaning forward he kissed your head head, laying himself next to you on the hospital bed.
It wasn’t the best sleep he had ever had, but every night he would go to your hospital room and sleep there.
Two weeks had passed, and just like always Booth walked into the room, stretching a little bit to see that your bed was empty.
“(Y/N)?”
He looked around, then ran towards the nurses station.
“Where is she?!”
“Who?”
“The woman in that room! Where did she go?!”
Another nurse walked over, placing a hand on his shoulder.
“She’s gone for physio, just like she has for the past few days.”
Booth furrowed his brows and he looked at the nurse.
“How long?”
“She’s been awake maybe a week now, doing physio for a few days, she’s actually coming down the hallway now.”
Booth turned around to see you slowly walking down the hallway, and when you saw him you immediately turned your head towards the floor.
He walked over to the doctor.
“I’ve got it.”
He placed your hand on his arm, slowly helping you back to your room.
He said nothing as he helped sit down, and he covered you up with the blanket.
“You’ve been awake for a week.”
You slowly nodded your head.
“You didn’t think to tell me you’ve been awake?!” He hissed.
“I.. I thought you would stop coming..”
Booth furrowed his brow and looked at you confused.
“Do you want me to stop coming..?”
You said nothing and Booth made his way towards the door.
“No!”
He stopped.
“I… don’t want to sleep alone Booth..”
He sighed, turning around he walked back over and he laid next to you again.
You rested your head next to his shoulder, and watched as he flicked through channels on the TV.
“I thought if you knew I was awake you’d stop coming…”
“No, of course not. If you asked me I would’ve carried on sleeping here.”
He placed his arm over your head and he tapped you trying to move your head.
“Move your head.”
You lifted it and he put his arm under your head so you could rest on it.
Neither of you said anything for a few moments, and Booth noticed how your hand clung to your injury, as if trying to stop it from bleeding.
Reaching out he placed his hand over yours.
“Hey… it’s okay… you’re not bleeding..”
“I can’t help it..”
Booth ran his thumb along your knuckles.
“I know… but you know what, you’re going to be okay, and you’ll be back on your feet in no time.”
You looked up at him.
“It hurts when I move…”
Booth looked down at you, smiling a little.
“Yeah, yeah getting shot will do that to you. But trust me, in a few months you won’t even feel a thing.”
You stared at him for a moment.
“Why did you keep coming here…? I thought you were pissed at me..?”
“No. I mean yes okay I was pissed, but you were shot.”
You stared up at him with furrowed brows and he sighed, leaning forward to rest his forehead on yours and you closed your eyes.
“I was scared I lost you…”
“I’m sorry I messed up…”
He pulled away and you looked at him.
“No, you didn’t mess up. Okay? I shouldn’t have been so angry, I should’ve checked on you straight away, and I should’ve told you I loved you.”
“W..what…?”
Booth leant down, carefully pressing his lips to yours and then he pulled away.
“I love you…”
You leant forward, quickly leant forward, kissing him again and he leant into the kiss.
When he went to pull away you leant up, only to groan in pain and lay back down.
“Take it easy.. relax… you need to stay laid down..”
He smiled and covered you back up with the blanket, laying down and you rested your head on his chest, laying on your good side.
Booth reached his out his hand, placing it over your wound.
“You don’t have to keep holding it, it’s okay, it’s not bleeding okay? I won’t let anything happen, just go to sleep.”
“You’ll make sure I don’t bleed out?”
Booth smiled a little bit.
“Yeah, yeah of course I will, I would never let you bleed out.”
You smiled to yourself, taking his free hand so you can hold it, and it wasn’t long before you drifted asleep.
Just like he said, he kept his hand on your side, even when he fell asleep as well, making sure that you weren’t bleeding.
You were scared, and he knew that, and if he had to lay there holding your bandage covered sighed so you could some sleep then that’s what he would do

I have thinking about you a lot lately. Thinking about us too. I never thought I'd ever meet my soulmate. If I'm being honest I'm not sure I believed they existed. But without a shadow of a doubt, you are my soulmate. I'm thanking my lucky stars you've entered my life. I promise you now sweetheart I'm never going to take you for granted. I'd attempt to give you the moon if I could. Hell, I'd give you the whole galaxy if it were possible. You deserve it all darlin. Which has got me thinking. I was wondering if perhaps you'd want to move in with me. You could move into mine or we could find somewhere together. I really don't mind as long as I get to wake up to you every morning for the rest of our lives.
Your always, Love, FInn x

A Vulcan Smile Part Eight
[Part One] [Part Two] [Part Three] [Part Four] [Part Five] [Part Six] [Part Seven]
Tumblr media
A/N: There's some questionable made-up Vulcan lore in this because there's not a whole lot of detail about their telepathic abilities given in the cannon. But, you know what, if the writers of SNW can make up whatever they want about Spock then fuck it so can I. yeehaw, baby
“You’re leaving.” Spock stood in the doorway to your bedroom, arms hanging at his side, shoulders stooped ever so slightly. His tone and expression were carefully crafted to not give any hint that he might be experiencing an emotion. At fourteen he was already well on his way to becoming the man he would grow to be.
You didn’t look up from your packing. “I’m to be on the ship to Earth tomorrow. I am going to stay with the Graysons.”
The Graysons. That’s what you had called them. It took you two years to refer to them as your grandparents.
“You knew I would be leaving,” you said in his mind. You had always preferred the privacy that telepathy provided, even if casual usage wasn’t approved of by the High Council.
“I knew he wanted you to leave,” he said in yours.
Telepathic communication was one of the few of your less desirable behaviors he endulged. You didn’t understand why until you were much older and you realized that you had pushed him away too far and might never have this connection again.
“What do you expect me to do?”
“Fight.”
Finally, you looked up at him. His eyes bore into you. They had such an intensity that anytime he let himself loose even just a little it felt like staring directly into a star.
“You always fight. Why are you not now?”
“There’s nothing to fight. I want this.”
He moved further into you’re room. “You want to leave?”
“I want to be somewhere else. Somewhere I am understood.”
“And you believe that is Earth? Will they not just misunderstand the other half of you?” Spock asked.
You sighed, rubbing a hand across your face. ”I’m tired, Spock. I’m tired of being ostracized for understanding that we were born with more than just a capacity for logic. I am tired of being treated like a failed experiment.”
There was more than that. You were tired of seeing him hurt. You were tired of watching him take the harassment. You were tired of being told just to accept the harassment and constant implications that you were less than. You were tired of being penalized for standing up for yourself and your brother. But you left it unsaid. Unthought, in case he was listening.
“Human society is still young and ignorant. They will not accept you.” His eyes searched your face. “They will not understand you.”
“Maybe not, but at least I’ll be free to be me. I won’t be suffocated under the pressures of being the Ambassador’s hope for a greater relationship between our two races.” You sat down on your bed and stared out the window. “At least I will be told that I am loved.”
A breeze blew through the leaves, partially obscuring your view of the red mountains and the rich orange sky.
“I won’t miss it here,” you said out loud. You needed to hear it. You needed him to believe it.
Now all you saw out the window was darkness and passing stars. You would never see the richness of those orange skies again. A fact the conference was intent on reminding you.
Normally being around that many Vulcans was exhausting because it required you to choose between putting on an act or dealing with the unfettered scorn of the entire group. Neither option was without its downsides. But this event was focused on how to ensure the survival of the people and cultures of Vulcan now that it was gone. Not even Vulcans can fully suppress the level of sorrow that comes with losing a planet and having that many grief-stricken telepaths in one starbase was overwhelming.
The favor you had paid Leonard only worsened your exhaustion. What had been bubbling out of you in aggression was now dripping out in fatigue. Your head felt heavy and cloudy.
You had come to the rooms provided by the Captain with the intention of sleeping, but your mind was bent on replaying memories over and over and not giving you a moment's rest.
Hauling yourself out of bed, you pulled your robes back on. One of the many concessions you had made in order to have your voice heard was to wear a traditional Vulcan dress.
The bottom of your dress and robe swept across the floor as you walked through the corridor. You followed the smell of food and drinks. Even with your nasal numbing agent, it was strong. You hadn’t fully realized how many smells there would be on a ship this size. You didn’t know how Spock dealt with it every day.
The smell led you to what looked like a bar.
You walked a few paces from the door and clasped your hands, trying to figure out if there were replicators you were supposed to use or if there was someone you asked for food.
“You should be resting,” Spock said, coming to stand by you.
“I’m fine,” you answered automatically in his head, something you hadn’t done in years. You were suddenly more willing to fall back on old childhood habits than speak.
He raised a brow at you but responded in kind, “You have not slept in days.”
“I am well within the healthy limit.”
“Not after such a taxing event.”
“But I supposed it wasn’t taxing for you?”
He bristled, realizing that he must think his next words more carefully if he wished to avoid an argument. “It was. However, my mind has always been less open than yours. You take on the suffering of those around you.”
If only he knew just how true that was.
“I’m fine,” you told him again.
“Your mind is cluttered.”
You glanced around the bar. “There’s a lot of people on your ship.”
He looked you over, then spoke out loud, “Come with me.”
You hesitated. You really just wanted to get something to eat and then go back to bed, but reluctantly, you followed him.
The two of you moved quietly through the ship until you were in a smaller room with significantly fewer people.
You exhaled.
When you had denied the Vulcan teachings on emotional control, you had also denied the teachings on telepathy control. They went hand in hand under Serak’s teachings. Telepathy was turned inward to help suppress one's emotions. Without doing this you were left with far more unchecked telepathic power with no one to teach you what to do with it. At least no one you were allowed to talk to as a child.
You had eventually figured it out and learned to control it and use it for good when you could, but you had never built up defenses the way most did. You hadn’t wanted to. Your mother had said that greeting the universe with an open heart and open mind made you more ready to learn. She was a sentimental woman. But she had also told you it would come at a cost. You knew that at least to be true.
The thoughts of those around you were always in your head. Like murmuring from another room. You couldn’t make them out with conscious effort, but they were there. You had learned to tune them out when you were a teenager, but when you were tired and surrounded by others, they started to overtake your own thoughts.
Spock led you to a table and told you to sit. You rested your head on your hand and waited for him to return. When he did, he placed a bowl in front of you. You stared down into the orange broth.
Plomeek soup.
You had despised it as a child. It was so bland and boring and never seemed to satisfy you.
Picking up your head, you lifted a spoonful to your mouth. Your eyes slipped shut as you took in the subtle flavor. It tasted remarkably similar to the one your mother used to make.
Finally, you spoke, “Thank you.”
Spock nodded, watching as you slowly sipped the soup.
“Have you considered meditating?”
You rolled your eyes at the suggestion.
“It has helped Vulcan’s for generations. Why you think it woul-”
“Because I don’t subscribe to the idea that I need to suppress my emotions.” You focused your attention on your meal as you projected your thoughts into his mind.
“A bit of suppression might benefit you.”
“And a bit of expression might benefit you,” you responded in turn.
Now it was his turn to roll his eyes.
“See, don’t you feel better?” You took another sip of soup. “And I did meditate.”
“You could have just said that.”
“Where’s the fun in that?”
He rested his hands on the table. “It appears you are also feeling better.”
“I’m starting to.”
“Good.” His head turned as something else in the room caught his attention. “Excuse me. I need to converse with the Captain for a moment. I will be back.”
You gave him a quick nod of recognition. He returned it and walked off. You focused your attention on your soup. The smell, the taste, the feel of it in your mouth. If you focused hard enough, everything else would fade into the background. At least that’s what you hoped would happen.
Instead, a voice cut through your soup thoughts, “There you are.”
You looked up to find Leonard smiling down at you. Glancing around, you saw that he was alone.
“I thought you were giving Jo a tour,” you said. Your voice sounded odd even to your own ears; horst and hallow.
“I was. Just dropped her off to work on homework. When she saw you weren’t there anymore, she made me promise I’d find you and make sure you’re okay.”
You raised an inquisitive eyebrow.
“Jo’s worried you’re going to be attacked by a salt vampire.”
“I think those safety lectures of yours did more harm than good,” you told him, dropping your chin to look straight ahead.
“You alright, sweetheart?”
You stiffened at the pet name.
“Look worn slap out.” He put a hand on your shoulder.
The images of his thoughts filled your mind, perfectly formed. You jerked away before you had time to process any of them. You couldn’t deal with anyone else in your head today.
“Don’t touch me.”
He didn’t deserve the sharpness in your tone. You knew that, but you couldn’t stop it from being there. Full and biting.
Leonard held his hands up to show you he wasn’t going to touch you again. “I thought we got over you making me the bad guy when I let you into my head the other night.”
“No one’s making you the bad guy.” You rested your forearms on the table so you could lean towards him. “Do you have to react dramatically to everything?”
“I’m not the one who almost bit someone’s head off for putting a hand on your shoulder.”
“Expecting you to respect my boundaries is not biting your head off.”
“You’ve got to be kidding me. You’ve never met a boundary you wouldn’t cross.”
You pulled your chin in and raised your brows. “I beg your unbelievable parton?”
“You brought my twelve-year-old to a starbase!”
You rolled your eyes and leaned back. “I have to hand it to you, Doctor. you can hold on to things for an exceptionally long time.”
He crossed his arms. “You could start an argument with an empty house, you know that?”
“You wouldn’t even need the house.”
“I can’t do this right now. Find me when you’re done yo-yoing me around.” He waved a hand over his shoulder as he started back towards the door.
“Oh come on, Doctor. I already know how good you are at walking away. Show me something new.”
He ignored your harassment and your eyes followed him out into the corridor. Then you dropped your head to your arms with a groan.
“You ‘let yourself into his head’?” Spock repeated the phrase as closely as he could in Vulcan.
Stifling the urge to groan, you lifted your head just enough for you to be able to peak over your arms and stared up at your brother.
“What does that mean?” After spending three days with other Vulcan’s his accent was stronger than it had been. It made you realize in retrospect how much his time in Starfleet had affected it. His consents were tighter. His vowels moved at a different pitch. You wondered if he was aware of how much he had changed.
“Nothing,” your Vulcan words were muffled slightly against your sleeve. “Don’t worry about it.”
Silently, he sat down across from you. He carefully folded his hands on the table and straightened up, watching you.
“Don’t do this,” you grumbled.
“Don’t sit down with you?”
“No, don’t do that silent judgy thing you do right before we get in a fight.”
“I do not have a silent judgy thing.”
“I can feel the angry thoughts churning in your head.”
“Anger is a human emotion.”
You rolled your eyes and dropped your head again. “Just say what you want to say.”
“I have nothing to say.”
You scoffed but didn’t look up.
“You are going to do what you want to regardless of what I say. I don’t know why I ever bothered trying to give you advice.”
“Advice?” Now you lifted your head fully. “You told me to avoid the doctor completely. How am I supposed to do that without offending his family, who are some of my closest friends? I’m his daughter’s third emergency contact. It goes Donna, then Fred, then me, then Leonard. Do you expect me to just leave him out of the loop in the case of an emergency with his own child?”
“Of course not.”
You pulled your shoulders back so he could get the full effect of your ‘so then what’ expression.
“There are many other forms of relationships between avoiding entirely and performing intimate telepathic bonds together.”
“If it’s so intimate-” It was incredibly intimate. You knew that. “-why do you use it on what are essentially criminals.”
“Sometimes it is necessary to cross that boundary for the good of the many.”
“And sometimes it’s necessary for the good of the one.”
His brows lowered at your flip of the traditional Vulcan motto.
“He was suffering. I wasn’t just going to sit there when I could help.” You leaned back in your seat. “I thought you wanted me to avoid him because you feared I would pick a fight. I thought you would be pleased that we’re are… getting along.”
“You appear to be managing to do both.”
“Why does this bother you so much?”
“You have a tendency to,” he hesitated as he searched for the right words, “become emotionally invested. Were that to happen with a member of this crew who is less than understanding of many of your Vulcan traits it could become difficult for that person to continue working with me.”
“You’re professional relationship is so fragile that my forming a friendship with him would create difficulties?”
“Not for me alone. Your brash, unregulated emotions have gotten you into trouble before. Combining them with the doctor’s could create complications.”
“I am not combining emotions with the doctor.” You stood up. “But if I was, it wouldn’t be any of your business. I can combine whatever I want with whomever I want.”
“Where are you going?”
“Well, I was going to go get some tea, unless you’re worried that I’ll run into the head engineer on the way to the replicators and become emotionally invested.” You didn’t wait for a response before walking away.
The light from the replicator stung your over tired eyes but you didn’t look away. It seemed the easiest place to look.
“Brothers, huh?” a nearby voice asked.
You turned to see Jim still sitting at the table, a PADD in one hand and a mug in the other.
“Brothers,” you agreed, grabbing your tea from the machine.
“Always disappointed about something. I swear I don’t know why mine’s mad at me half the time,” he joked.
“That must be nice.”
He chuckled. “I’m my experience with Spock he usually has a good, logical reason for everything he does and says.”
“And in your experience with brothers?” you asked.
“They usually mean well.” He gave you a sympathetic smile. “Even if they’re doing the wrong thing.”
“Are you speaking as someone with a brother or someone who is a brother?” you asked.
“Both.” He set his PADD down. “But mostly someone with a brother. I’m a great brother.”
You smiled at his playful cockiness.
“Can I ask you another question?”
“Of course.”
“What’s a yo-yo?”

HEART ON MY SLEEVE

🤍 pairing: mattheo riddle x reader.
🤍 song inspiration: friends by chase atlantic.
🤍 author's note: the duality of man. this fic serves both cute, fluffy matty and jealous, possessive mattheo.
Tumblr media
For his upcoming birthday, Mattheo Riddle had one simple wish: for his best friends to get along.
It shouldn’t have been such an ordeal except for the fact that you and Theo absolutely hated each other. If it weren’t for Mattheo, the two of you would have no reason to cross paths. Theo was an arrogant, pompous, quidditch playing prick with a terrible nicotine addiction while the closest you’d come to physical exertion is carrying your weekly stack of books from the library to your dorm.
Needless to say, you were not a fan of Theodore Nott. You thought he was a bad influence on Matty, while Theo labeled you as the buzzkill, often talking your best friend out of doing things that would either land him in detention or the infirmary. You got the feeling that Theo hated the fact that he had to share Mattheo’s attention with you. Never mind the fact that you were friends with him first.
The origin of your friendship started long before your days at Hogwarts. The first time you met Mattheo, his father invited you and your parents over at Riddle Manor to celebrate a successful business deal between your families. Even at a young age, you remembered recognizing the coldness and distance in the Riddle household. The elder riddle, Tom Sr., was a stern and unforgiving man who kept his family under his thumb. Tom Jr. played the perfect heir; cool, calm, and collected as he stood by his father’s side. Mrs. Riddle had a severe and somber air about her that sent shivers down your spine as she flashed an empty smile at you.
Mattheo was different from the rest. There was a warmth to him that radiated outwards, pulling you in with his cheeky dimpled smile and soft bouncing curls. He marched right up to you, bowing at the waist like he was taught to, except he nearly tripped over his feet and gave you a crooked little grin before correcting himself.
“Hi, Y/N. I’m Mattheo, but you can call me Matt.” There was a mischievous glint in his brown eyes that you didn’t recognize as trouble until much later. “Do you want to play with me?”
As it turns out, his definition of playing meant chasing each other through the hedge maze out on the manor grounds and absolutely dirtying up your pretty pink dress as you rolled around in the grass. You laid side by side on your backs, giggling as you tucked a flower into Mattheo’s curls.
“You’re going to get me in trouble, you know,” you stated matter-of-factly as you rolled over on your elbows. “My dress is all dirty.”
“Don’t worry, we can ask Tom to help us. He knows lots of spells and hexes.” He leaned in conspiratorially, holding his pinky finger out. “But you have to keep it a secret, okay? Can I trust you, Y/N?”
You hooked your finger through his, not knowing that such a simple secret would forever solidify your friendship. “You can trust me, Matty.”
In the years that followed, the two of you were as thick as thieves. Most days were spent at either the Riddle manor or your estate, which Mattheo tended to prefer since it provided him reprieve from his father. As of late, his parents had made it perfectly clear that he was expected to follow in his brother's footsteps. Despite it being Tom's first year at Hogwarts, he was already proving to be a gifted and talented wizard. When his father wasn't outright ignoring him, Mattheo was forced to practice hexes and spells that were beyond the knowledge of an eleven year old. Without his older brother to protect him, Mattheo felt the walls closing in in his grand yet inhospitable home.
You were the only silver lining in his otherwise dreary days. Mattheo thanked Merlin that his father allowed visits to your estate. Unlike Riddle Manor, your family home was warm, lovely, and full of life. During the summers, the two of you would venture out to the edge of your property and set up camp at the creek. The sunny days were spent swimming, climbing, and picking flowers from sunrise to sunset. On one particular day, you sat cross-legged on the picnic blanket, absentmindedly picking at the sandwich in your lap.
Beside you, Mattheo nudged you with his knee. “What’s wrong, Y/N?”
You blinked, trying to savor the sunshine for as long as you could. “I don’t want summer to end.”
“We’ll only be apart for a year,” Mattheo said softly, correctly guessing the cause of your apprehension. You weren’t surprised. He always seemed to know what was on your mind. “You’ll be joining me at Hogwarts before you know it. By then, I’ll be an expert so I can show you the ropes.”
“A lot can happen in a year,” you stated. “What if you make other friends and forget about me?”
“I might make other friends, but I’d never forget about you. You were my first friend ever. That makes you the most important.”
You looked up and found yourself face to face with Mattheo’s earnest expression. The corners of his lips tugged upwards as he nudged you again. “Besides, you know I’m going to write to you every week. Now that I’m in the same castle as Malfoy, I can finally crack the great mystery of whether or not he bleaches his hair.”
“There’s no way that’s natural, right? Maybe Lucius has a special shampoo or something.”
Mattheo grinned and draped an arm over your shoulder. “I don’t know, but I promise to find out for you.”
“You’ll really write to me every week?”
“Of course I will,” Mattheo declared, holding his pinky finger out. “You trust me, right?”
You smiled and hooked your pinkies together. “I trust you, Matty.”
Tumblr media
When the next year finally rolled around, you were so excited that you convinced your parents to take you to King’s Cross at least an hour before your departure. You hadn’t seen Mattheo since the previous summer because his family had been away on holiday in Spain, but he stayed true to his word and wrote to you every chance he got. You loved reading about the friends he’d made, the antics he got up to, and most importantly, the fascinating classes that awaited you at Hogwarts.
As you passed through Platform 9 ¾, you were nearly knocked off your feet as Mattheo ran full force into you. He had grown much taller since you last saw him, so much so that he now towered over you as he pulled you into a bear hug.
“Hi, Matty,” you giggled against his chest.
“Hi, Y/N.”
Mattheo pulled away, grinning as he tugged at your hand. “Come on, I want you to meet my friends.”
You looked back at your parents who merely smiled at Mattheo’s excitement. To his chagrin, your best friend remembered to properly greet them and asked if you could board the train early. After much fussing, they eventually said their goodbyes and allowed you to go with Mattheo.
The first friend that you met was Enzo. He was sweet, if not a little cheeky as he hinted that Mattheo couldn’t stop talking about you all year. Draco and Blaise needed no introduction given that your families were all fairly acquainted ever since you could remember. To your delight, Pansy was amongst the group as well. The two of you used to take ballet together, so it was a relief to have another girl to bond with. The older boys, Tom and Regulus, briefly greeted you before returning to their own cabin.
Last, but not least, was Theodore.
Whereas the others welcomed you with open arms, Nott was not as warm in his reception of you. The two of you clashed right off the bat. You weren’t quite sure what the root of your disagreement was. Perhaps it was his snarky comment insinuating that girls couldn’t be proper quidditch fans in reference to your Chudley Cannons scarf, perhaps it was your biting retort that he could stick his misogyny up his arse. Either way, the interaction set the tone for your strained relationship.
Being sorted into Gryffindor only contributed to the animosity between you as well. Given the longstanding rivalry of Slytherins and Gryffindors, Theo was determined to view you as his enemy. The harder you fought, the harder Mattheo tried to repair the rift. You were the two most important people in his life and he couldn’t stand to see you two tear each other apart.
For the most part, you tried to grin and bear it. While you couldn’t for the life of you understand how or why he was even friends with someone as unbearable as Theodore Nott, you tried to be civil for Mattheo’s sake. Tried being the key word. With Theo’s snark and your temper, the two of you became known for your infamous fights. Still, it didn’t stop your best friend from trying.
Over the years, Mattheo concocted countless plots and schemes to get the two of you to bond. If his favorite band was playing in town, he would magically have two extra tickets to bring both you and Theo along. If there was a book release you were dying to attend, Mattheo would invite Theo along to check out the record store next door. If the castle was dead during the weekend, Mattheo would suggest a trio trip to Hogsmeade.
As much as you cared for Mattheo, your patience only stretched so thin. Without fail, every outing that the three of you went on almost always ended in an argument between you and Theo.
“I don’t know how you’re friends with both of us, Mattheo,” Theo joked as he gulped down his burger. “I’m fun and Y/N is —”
“Finish that sentence and I’ll stick my fork right through your hand, Nott,” you threatened with a sickly sweet smile.
The hostility wasn’t anything new, but you supposed that after dealing with it for years and years on end, Mattheo had finally reached his breaking point.
Your best friend pushed his plate away and sighed. “Let’s just go.”
You nodded in agreement, gathering your things and following Mattheo’s lead. Theo trailed after, obnoxiously squeezing his way through the door of the Three Broomsticks and letting it close behind him. You yanked it open, nearly pulling the bloody thing off its hinges.
“How very mature of you. Though I’m not surprised that you don’t know how to hold a door open for a lady.”
Theo looked back, craning his neck behind you. “As far as I’m concerned, there aren’t any ladies around. Just an infuriating little Gryffindor who can’t handle not having the last word.”
“I’m infuriating?” You huffed, crossing your arms. “Clearly you’ve never suffered through the pleasure of your own company. Spoiler alert, the snarky arsehole bit stopped being funny in third year.”
“Well, the uptight and bossy bitch bit wasn’t ever funny to begin with.”
“Enough already,” Mattheo yelled. You reeled back in surprise. Usually, your best friend just let you and Theo fight it out until you both got tired of it, but he wasn’t having it tonight. “You two are the most important people in my life, but you’re acting like bloody toddlers. I’m tired of feeling like I have to choose a side, so either you two find a way to get along or risk losing me as a friend.”
For the first time since you met him, you and Theo were both stunned into silence. Mattheo took one last look at his closest friends and marched off into the castle without a word.
Tumblr media
The next day, you woke up feeling weary. You hardly slept last night given Mattheo’s ultimatum. Your best friend wasn’t the type to make declarations like that lightly, so you knew he meant it. Especially since he went straight to his dorm without coming over to watch a movie or talk late into the night like the two of you often did.
The suspicion was all but confirmed when you sat through a particularly awkward and tense breakfast. Mattheo briefly acknowledged you with a nod, not bothering to speak as he cranked up the music on his headphones. As the Smiths crooned, you looked up at Theo who shook his head at your inquisitive glance. You knew that Mattheo had most likely given him the silent treatment last night as well.
Despite the fact that you and Mattheo had very similar schedules, he managed to avoid you throughout the entire day. By the time the last class rolled around, you knew that he was serious about you and Theo making up. It was a hard pill to swallow. Truly, you’d rather ingest a pill the size of a hippogriff than make amends with Nott, but it wasn’t like you had a choice. You didn’t want to lose Mattheo.
Deciding to be the bigger person, you went to the one place that you knew Theo frequented. You found him sitting alone in the Astronomy Tower, long legs dangling below him as he smoked a cigarette. Biting back a comment about the death trap pursed between his lips, you cleared your throat.
“Mind if I sit?”
Theo tensed as he looked up at you. He wore the sneer that he solely reserved for you, but his eyes were dull and dim. The argument with Mattheo obviously left him feeling lost as well.
“Do I have a choice?” You glared in response, but took a deep breath to calm yourself. Theo winced. “Sorry. Force of habit. Sit, I guess.”
Gingerly, you settled in the spot next to him. “It’s bad, isn’t it?”
“He wouldn’t talk to me last night,” Theo confirmed as he ashed his cigarette. “Just put on his headphones and went to sleep facing the wall.”
“He’s been avoiding me all day.”
Theo sighed. “What are we going to do?”
“Look,” you started, trying to muster up the strength to propose your next statement. “Obviously, we hate each other, but Mattheo’s important to me and I know he’s important to you, too. So for his sake, can’t we just put all this animosity behind us and try to get along?”
“What exactly does getting along mean?”
You shrugged. To be honest, you had no idea how to approach the situation, but you figured you had to start somewhere. “I don’t know. Maybe we can grab a bite to eat. Make polite small talk. Try not to strangle each other in the process.”
“I guess I can do that,” Theo conceded. “Why don’t we go to the new pub in the village? I heard they have fried pickles.”
You perked up. “You like pickles? I thought I was the only one.”
“I don’t just like pickles. I love them,” Theo stated.
“Me too,” you grinned. “Mattheo always gives me his cause he says —”
“They taste like feet,” he finished with a chuckle.
You nodded, laughing along. “Well, what are we waiting for, then?”
Theo watched as you stood, smoothing the front of your skirt. You offered a hand out to him, both literally and figuratively. To your surprise, Theo took the peace offering and let you pull him to his feet.
An hour later, the two of you were squeezed into a tiny booth by the makeshift stage. The pub was lively tonight and nearly packed to the brim, thanks to the happy hour deal on their drinks and appetizers in honor of their grand opening.
The pickles didn’t disappoint. You ate a good amount, but Theo scarfed the whole thing down like he hadn’t eaten in months. As he finished a sandwich and gulped the meal down with his second butterbeer, you gaped in surprise.
“Honestly, where do you put it all?”
Theo patted his stomach, which was unfairly flat and probably housed perfectly sculpted abs despite his eating habits. “I’m a growing boy. I need to eat a lot to offset the energy I expend. Especially when I’m sparring with you.”
“Oddly enough, I’m flattered by that.”
“You should be,” Theo quipped. “I’ve never had to put so much thought into insulting someone until I met you.”
“I bet you were pissed when I took your crown as the sassiest and bitchiest person in our friend group.”
“I’ve never experienced such heartbreak,” Theo said sarcastically as he placed a hand over his heart. “I mean, to be dethroned by someone who can’t even reach the top shelf in the cupboard was truly the most humbling moment of my life.”
“Well, you shouldn’t have assumed that I knew nothing about quidditch just because I’m a girl.”
“I was a dick for that,” Theo admitted. “But I was also twelve. I didn’t even know what misogyny meant. I thought you were describing a disease.”
You snorted. “Well, the past is in the past. Even though I clearly won that argument, we should put it behind us.”
Theo rolled his eyes, but clinked his butterbeer against yours. “Cheers to that, Y/N.”
Surprisingly, you found that you and Theo had a lot more in common than you initially thought. When he wasn’t being a prick, he was actually quite nice to talk to. In a single conversation, you learned more about Theo than you had in years. The two of you possessed a knack for potions, preferred foreign literature, and shared a love for horror movies.
As the live band went on, Theo mumbled an obscure reference to an eighties muggle band that your mum used to blast when you were younger.
“I can’t believe they’re covering this song,” you shouted over the music. “I haven’t heard it in years.”
Theo’s eyes widened in surprise. “You know this song?”
“Of course I do,” you retorted. “Mattheo says I have the music taste of a divorced country club trophy wife.”
“You and me both.”
By the end of the night, you found plenty of common ground with the boy you once thought of as your enemy. It was quite alarming to realize that you hadn’t argued once all night and even more so when you found yourself actually enjoying Theo’s company. Maybe Mattheo was right after all. When you stopped viewing Theo as competition, he was actually not that bad. You now understood what Mattheo meant when he said that you and Theo were more alike than you cared to admit.
On the walk back to the castle, Theo pulled out a spliff but glanced at you before lighting it. “Do you mind if I smoke?”
“Knock yourself out.”
The moon was silver and bright against the cloudless sky as the two of you sauntered through the beaten path. You listened to Theo recount Tom’s disastrous attempts at asking Chloe out, all the while giggling to yourself because he was a bigger gossip than you and Pansy put together.
“Don’t let Tom hear you talking about his love life,” you teased. “He’d probably feed you to his basilisk.”
Theo grimaced. “Half of Hogwarts would weep at the loss of such a handsome face.”
“However will we survive without your wit and charm, Nott?”
He chuckled as he blew a ring of smoke up into the sky. You watched it float before holding your hand out. “Care to share?”
“I didn’t know you smoked.”
“Who do you think taught Mattheo how to roll his first blunt?”
Theo stared in disbelief as you took the spliff, inhaling deeply. You held the smoke in your lungs effortlessly before blowing rings of smoke in quick succession.
“Damn,” the brown haired boy exclaimed. “Who the hell are you, Y/N?”
You smirked as you tapped the joint. “Someone much cooler than you, Theo.”
Tumblr media
After that night, you and Theo got on more and more. The banter and bickering was still there, but it was more playful now. Mattheo was glad to see his two best friends getting along so well. Since first year, it was all he had ever wanted.
The days of forcing you two to hang out together was long gone. Now, you were practically as attached to the hip with Theo as you were with Mattheo.
When Mattheo went up to the Astronomy Tower for a smoke break, he would find you sitting cross-legged across from Theo as he filled you in on the catfight between Lavender and Cho. When Mattheo visited you at the library during his free period, Theo was already there working on his History of Magic homework beside you. When Mattheo arrived at the Great Hall for assembly, he slid into the seat next to Theo as his friend craned his neck to peer at the crowd.
“Looking for someone, mate?”
“Yeah, Y/N said she was running late,” Theo answered distractedly. “I saved a seat for her.”
At first, Mattheo loved the fact that you put your differences behind you and became such great friends like he always knew you would, but as time went along, your best friend noticed that you and Theo were becoming a little too close.
On one occasion, Mattheo briefly excused himself from the common room party for a smoke only to come back to find you and Theo annihilating Draco and Blaise at butterbeer pong. He walked in right as you made the winning shot, witnessing Theo picking you up and twirling you around as Malfoy stomped off, grumbling something about an unfair play. A cheat of sorts.
Mattheo couldn’t help but agree. Seeing you in Theo’s arms felt like cheating. The whole thing made him feel strange. It didn’t help that every time the three of you hung out, Mattheo noticed that you and Theo now had little inside jokes and references that he didn’t understand. Being jealous of his best mate was ridiculous, but yet he couldn’t shake the uneasy feeling that only grew stronger with each passing day.
As you grew closer, Mattheo felt stranger. One morning, he nearly smashed his muffin to pieces when he saw you wearing Theo’s hoodie.
“Why are you wearing that?” he asked through clenched teeth.
You looked down in surprise as though you’d forgotten that you were wearing another man’s clothes. “Oh, I was cold so Theo let me borrow his hoodie.”
Mattheo frowned before pulling his sweater over his head. “Here, wear mine instead. It’s warmer.”
The gesture was confusing, but you merely shrugged and exchanged Theo’s hoodie for Mattheo’s sweater. “Thanks, Matty.”
Later that week, Mattheo found you in the stands in your usual spot before the game. He smiled when he saw his number painted on your right cheek. The brief moment of happiness was shattered when you turned and revealed that you had also painted Theo’s number on your left cheek. Mattheo nearly fell off of his broom. He was used to seeing his and only his number on you. First the hoodie, now this?
The green monster reared its ugly head during the game itself, motivating him to play as brutally as possible. The Hufflepuffs weren’t safe from his rage and neither were his teammates. As he soared around the goalpost, he hurled the quaffle as hard as he could, fully knowing that Theo was within the ball’s radius. Thankfully for him, Theo ducked at the last second before shooting a baffled glance at his friend. Mattheo simply ignored it and kept playing.
Despite their sweeping win, the bad mood failed to lift. Mattheo frowned as he slipped into the booth next to you, glaring at Theo’s head as the two of them sandwiched you on both sides. Across the table, the rest of the team sipped their celebratory milkshakes.
The waitress set down a vanilla, strawberry, and chocolate milkshake in front of the three of you. Mattheo watched as you and Theo tasted your drinks before promptly taking out the straw and switching flavors.
“Told you that you’d like strawberry more,” Theo said with a fond eye roll.
“But vanilla sounded good.”
“Everything sounds good at the moment, but you always go back to your favorite.”
Mattheo clenched his jaw as you stuck your tongue out at Theo before turning towards him. “Aren’t you going to drink your milkshake, Matty?”
“I don’t really have much of an appetite.”
“Maybe it’s just the chocolate. Do you wanna try mine?”
He shook his head, crossing his arms. “No, that’s Theo’s milkshake.”
“Oh, well if you want the vanilla one instead, I can switch back.”
Mattheo wrinkled his nose. “No thanks, Theo’s mouth has already been on it.”
“Consider it a privilege,” Theo butted in. “Most girls and boys at this school would kill to swap spit with me.”
“I’ll pass.”
You cocked your head at your best friend, looking concerned. “Are you sure you’re okay, Matty?”
He nodded rather unconvincingly. “I’m fine.”
Tumblr media
As weeks passed, Mattheo only grew more jealous.
Granted, he was fully aware that he had no right to feel this way given the fact that he had practically pushed you and Theo together, but he just couldn’t help himself. The closer you grew, the more he regretted giving the two of you an ultimatum in the first place.
Before you became friends with Theo, Mattheo never had to share you with anyone. He realized now how much he had taken it for granted. Your best friend missed the times that the two of you spent alone. He missed having you all to himself. Mattheo was determined to get it back one way or another.
When Saturday night rolled around, Mattheo made his way up to Gryffindor Tower, glaring at anyone who balked at the sight of him on this side of the castle. After shoving McLaggen out of the way, Mattheo made his way up to the highest turret and let himself into your dorm.
You were perched in front of the vanity table, swiping your signature cherry lip gloss on in the mirror. Mattheo made himself at home, sprawling out on your bed. He knew you had plans tonight, but he was hoping to convince you to hang out with him instead. Mattheo eyed your dress, his gaze sweeping along the red fabric like a lover’s embrace. You flushed at the intensity of his stare as his brown eyes flickered back up to your face.
“Why can’t you hang out tonight?” Mattheo asked with a pout. “Are you going on a date? Is that why you’re leaving your best friend alone to perish?”
You shook your head in amusement before leaning over and giving him a kiss on the cheek. “Don’t be so dramatic, Matty. I’m not going on a date. Theo and I are just checking out this new band.”
Mattheo stiffened as you sprayed perfume on your wrists. “Why didn’t you invite me?”
“Theo did. He said you weren’t interested in listening to country club wife music.”
While that may be true, Mattheo would’ve gone if he knew you were coming too. “He didn’t tell me he was going with you.”
“Probably because he knew you’d feel obligated to go,” you responded. “But it’s alright, we won’t make you suffer through it. Theo will keep the creeps away.”
Mattheo did not like the sound of that. It was his job to watch over you, not Theo’s. Besides, he never thought of it as an obligation. Even if he wasn’t a fan of the music, he loved watching you jump around and have the time of your life. Spending time with you was the only reason why he insisted on coming to every concert. Keeping the creeps away was just an added bonus.
Now, Theo was taking away both. The realization put him in a foul mood, but he couldn’t let it show. He wanted you to have a good time, even if it wasn’t with him.
“Okay, but can we at least watch a movie and cuddle when you get back?”
“We’re going to be out pretty late. I don’t want you to lose sleep because of me. I know you have a Charms exam tomorrow morning, but I promise we can have a movie night tomorrow.”
Mattheo only nodded as you patted his curls and kissed his cheek again. He watched as you left your dorm, frowning into the mirror as he touched the two cherry gloss marks on his face.
The kiss prints were already fading, serving as some sort of sick metaphor.
Tumblr media
To your credit, you did make good on your promise on movie night. It had been a while since the two of you hung out alone, which is definitely the only reason why Mattheo felt needier and clingier than usual. While his touchiness wasn’t anything new, he seemed determined to make it obvious to those around you. Especially with Theo.
During breakfast, Mattheo silently laid his head on your shoulder and placed your hand atop his curls. Across the table, Theo continued gnawing away at his croissant while you told him about the new horror movie that had apparently been banned in twenty countries.
“I wanna watch it,” Mattheo mumbled as you scratched his head.
“But you hate horror,” Theo responded.
“So? I still want to see it.”
“I’ll ask my mum if she can send me a copy this weekend,” you said as you playfully tugged at his curls. “We can watch it in your dorm, okay?”
He leaned in, nuzzling against your neck. “Just the two of us?”
“Of course, Matty.”
Mattheo brightened at that, happy with your response. Perhaps it was petty of him, but he didn’t care. He wanted to send a message. You and Theo could be friends, but he’d always be the most important person in your life. Mattheo was your person, just like you were his.
The others were beginning to pick up on things, despite his constant denial. It was sort of a moot point anyways, given the fact that he was single handedly proving them right with his actions. Nowadays, your friends would find Mattheo lounging on your lap, wedging himself in the small space on the common room couch just so that he was next to you instead of Theo.
Every time you went out to Hogsmeade, he’d make a point of holding your hand and carrying your bags. Mattheo would stop mid-conversation and rub your cold hands in his, blowing on your fingers because he knows how cold you get even in the heated pub.
“Your hands are cold. Let me heat them up, princess.”
As you blushed, Enzo would shoot Mattheo a knowing look, which he deflected by focusing all his attention on you. Even Tom made a passing comment at all the sickening nicknames Mattheo had taken to calling you lately.
“Hi, sweetheart. Is this seat taken?”
“Morning, love. Do you want to go for a walk with me?”
“Here, give me your bag. I’ll carry it for you, darling.”
Though his older brother might disagree with his methods, Mattheo was quite convinced that it was working. Until it wasn’t.
During the last week of December, you and Theo began acting strangely. Every time he walked into a room, the two of you would fall uncharacteristically silent. When he tried to bring it up, you evaded his questions and changed the subject instead. The secrecy didn’t sit well with him.
After the last class of the day, Mattheo usually walked with you to the library, but every time he tried to find you that week, you had all but disappeared.
“Berkshire, have you seen Y/N?”
“Oh yeah, she left with Theo a few minutes ago. Seemed urgent.”
“Did they say where they were going?”
Enzo shrugged nonchalantly. “No clue, mate.”
Frustrated, Mattheo walked away before succumbing to the urge to throttle his friend. It wasn’t Enzo’s fault that you and Theo were acting so weird. Throughout the week, Theo would be out of their dorm for hours and hours. Sometimes he wouldn’t even come back until the wee hours of the night.
When Mattheo checked your dorm, you were also nowhere to be found. He was trying his best not to spiral, but the nagging suspicion that the two of you were hiding something from him was too big to ignore. It was all but confirmed when he caught you sneaking out of the dungeons one night.
You poked your head out from behind a marble column, watching students pass. Clearly, you didn’t want anyone to know that you were down here. Unfortunately for you, Mattheo had already seen you.
“What are you doing here, Y/N?”
His voice startled you, making you jump a step back as you glanced up at him with a nervous expression. “Oh! Hi, Matty. I was just — I was just, um, walking back to my dorm.”
“I can see that, but what were you doing in the dungeons?’
“Just…hanging out…”
Mattheo could feel his blood boiling. “With Theo?”
You gulped, nodding in agreement. “Yeah, he had my book.”
“So where is it?”
“Where’s what?”
“Your book.”
“Oh,” you said softly, avoiding his gaze. It was a tell-tale sign that you weren’t being honest. You always looked away when you were lying. “I guess I forgot.”
“You forgot the thing that you came down here for?”
“Hm? Did you hear that?” You mumbled, despite the fact that the corridor was silent. “I think Pansy’s calling me. I gotta go, Matty. See you later!”
Your best friend watched as you sauntered off to Salazar knows where with a frown. Confused, Mattheo walked back to his dorm and found the answer to his dreaded question. As soon as he opened the door, the familiar scent of strawberry and vanilla filled the air. Mattheo felt downright murderous. That was your perfume. He’d recognize it anywhere.
Mattheo glared at his best friend, who was laying in bed with a book perched on his chest. He eyed the rumpled sheets and Theo’s disheveled hair while trying not to assume the worst.
“Is that the book Y/N lent you?”
“Huh? What book?”
Though he wanted very much to punch his mate’s teeth in, Mattheo restrained himself. “The book she came down here to get.”
“She wasn’t here for —” Theo closed his mouth before nodding reluctantly. “Oh, right. Yeah. This is Y/N’s book. I should — I should return it.”
“You’re acting weird, Nott. Both of you are.” Mattheo narrowed his eyes in suspicion. “What the bloody hell is going on?”
“Blase? Yeah, be right there, mate! I’d love to stay and chat, but duty calls. See you later, man.”
Theo hightailed it out of the dorm, responding to an imaginary summon. Y/N and Theo. Theo and Y/N. His two closest friends. Sneaking around. Lying to him. Fooling around in his dorm. Mattheo didn’t know how to feel. He was angry, he was sad, but most of all, he was hurt. His girl and his best friend? It was the ultimate betrayal.
Never mind that Mattheo had spent the past decade denying his feelings for you. Anyone with an ounce of common sense could see that he’d been in love with you since you were children. It was clear as fucking day.
When Friday rolled around, Mattheo decided that enough was enough. He was going to confront the two of you. After quidditch practice, he followed Theo through the castle. The git buggered off to some dark, secluded area of the school that Mattheo had never stepped foot in. He kept a safe distance, peering around the corner when he heard whispered voices.
“I’m telling you, he’s getting suspicious,” Theo whispered frantically. “He asked why our dorm smelled like you. I didn’t know what to say, so I bolted!”
His heart dropped when he heard you sigh in frustration. “For Merlin’s sake, Theo! You couldn’t make up an excuse?”
“Me? You were the one who got caught sneaking out of the dungeons. It’s not like you’re an expert on stealth, either.”
“You know I can’t lie to him,” you exclaimed. “I’ve never been able to, ever since we were little. He knows all my tells. But, Theo, he absolutely cannot find out about this!”
Mattheo didn’t need to hear the rest. His heart had already been crushed into a thousand pieces. He couldn't believe it. The two of you were supposed to be his best friends, yet here you were keeping this terrible secret from him.
For the rest of the night, he sulked in his room. He was in the middle of brooding while listening to the Smiths when he heard a knock.
“Piss off!”
“It’s me.”
Part of him wanted to send you away, but a bigger part — the stupid, idiotic, part of him couldn’t. With a sigh, Mattheo peeled himself off the carpet and opened the door. Since the secret rendezvous with Theo, you had apparently found time to get dolled up and changed into a pretty party dress.
Mattheo frowned and crossed his arms. “Theo’s not here.”
You frowned, cocking your head in confusion. “I’m not here for Theo.”
He scoffed in response. “You don’t have to lie to me anymore. I know.”
“You know what, Matty?”
“I know that you and Theo are…sneaking around. Lying to me. Hooking up behind my back.”
“What on Godric’s green earth are you talking about?”
“Don’t try to deny it. I heard you in the corridor upstairs. I’ve had my suspicions all week. The two of you have been acting weird and avoiding me. More than that, you have your own stupid little inside jokes and you take him to concerts and you share milkshakes! Those are things we used to do together, but now you’ve gone and replaced me.”
“The only reason Theo and I became friends is because you asked us to., Mattheo.”
“I know that!” Mattheo exclaimed, throwing his hands up in frustration. “I regret it so much. I wanted you to get along, but not like this. Now Theo’s making you laugh and walking you to class and doing god knows what else with you in our dorm!”
Your features softened as you tried to reach for Mattheo, but he took a step back. “Don’t try to deny it! I know you were in here the night I caught you sneaking out of the dungeons. I could smell your perfume.”
Realization flooded you all at once. “Are you…are you jealous, Matty?”
Your best friend crossed his arms and huffed. “Of course I’m jealous! I don’t want you doing any of those things with Theo. You’re my best friend. Mine, not his. I had you first. I loved you first.”
The confession stunned you into silence. You blinked, processing the information before holding your hand out. “Come.”
Mattheo looked like he was about to argue, but you just stared at him with determination. “Just come with me, Matty. I promise it’ll all make sense in a minute.”
The logical side of him wanted to refuse, but he knew it would be futile. Mattheo would’ve ripped his heart out of his chest if you asked him to. You were his weak spot.
Following you out into the corridor, Mattheo staggered a few steps back as you slipped into the dark and empty common room. With a snap of your fingers, the lights came on and voices echoed in unison.
“Happy birthday, Mattheo!”
Startled, Mattheo blinked at the sight before him. The common room was decorated with streamers and confetti, complete with a bright birthday banner that covered nearly half the room. There were tables filled with food and drinks, all of which were his favorites. All of his friends were present, including Tom, who stood to the side with his arms crossed. The pretty blonde beside him — Chloe, the girl Theo swore his brother was in love with — elbowed Tom, who sighed and flashed Mattheo a rare smile. Now that was something he needed to revisit at a later time.
For now, one shocking revelation was enough to deal with.
“Surprise!” You exclaimed beside him as you pulled him into a hug.
At first, he was too stunned to return the gesture, but eventually he wrapped his arms around you and pulled you in for a bear hug. With everything going on, Mattheo nearly forgot his own birthday, but he knew that you wouldn't. You did all of this. For him.
When you broke apart, Theo clapped him on the back. “Happy birthday, mate.” Relief washed over his friend’s face as he spoke the words. “Thank fucking Salazar that Y/N pulled this off. Hiding this from you for a week has been absolute hell.”
“So…this is what you two have been up to?”
You nodded in confirmation. “Mhm, Theo and I spent all week planning it. We wanted everything to be perfect.”
“But it was hard because you were being such a nosy little git,” said Theo.
The pieces started to click together. All that secrecy between his two best friends hadn’t meant what he thought it did. “So you two aren’t…you haven’t…you’re not hooking up behind my back?”
You and Theo stared at each other in horror.
“Ew!” Theo dramatically exclaimed. “Y/N is like my sister. You don’t hook up with your sister. That’s gross.”
“But I thought…you were hanging out together so much and you had all these jokes and it seemed like…”
“Please,” Theo scoffed. “Anyone with half a brain cell can see that you two are clearly in love with each other.”
“Surprised you figured it out then, Theo,” you quipped.
The brunette rolled his eyes at you before breaking out into a shit-eating grin. "Wait. Is that why you've been acting like such a twat lately? You thought I was making a move on your girl?" Theo's eyes widened as Mattheo shifted uncomfortably. "I'm right, aren't I? First of all, I'm flattered that you felt threatened by me."
"Threatened is a strong word," Mattheo countered.
"Please, you nearly took my head off with a quaffle." Theo wiggled his eyebrows. "Second of all, I'm quite frankly offended that you'd think I'd ever go for Y/N. I would never break your trust like that."
"I know, I know." Mattheo said with a sigh. "I was being stupid, but for a second I was truly convinced that something was going on between you two. I mean, you've been hanging out so much lately..."
“Matty, do you even know what we talk about when we hang out? You. It’s always about you. You were right that we both have a lot in common. We were just too stubborn to see it, but the main thing that brought us together is that we care about you so much.”
“Well, Y/N cares for you a lot more,” Theo teased with a smirk. “She’d like to care for you all night long.”
You flushed as deep and red as your party dress. “Oh my gods. Shut up, Theo!”
“My work here is done. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m about to hit on that Ravenclaw who looks like she wants absolutely nothing to do with me.”
“Sorry about him,” you said as you turned back to Mattheo. “And sorry that we’ve been acting so shady all week. I just wanted to make sure you didn’t suspect anything.”
Mattheo chuckled. “Well, consider me surprised.”
You wrinkled your nose in disgust. “I can’t believe you thought I was hooking up with Theo.”
With a boyish grin, Mattheo pulled you to his side and kissed your temple. “I’m sorry, princess. Jealousy just got the best of me.”
“There’s no need to be jealous. If it wasn’t already obvious, I’ve been in love with you since we were kids.”
“I’m a bloody idiot.”
“Yeah, but you’re my idiot.”
Mattheo beamed and kissed the tip of your nose. “Thank you for doing all of this for me.”
You smiled softly, cheeks heating as he stared at you with bright, brown eyes. “Course, Matty, I just want you to have the best birthday.”
With a smile, Mattheo leaned down and pressed a soft kiss against your lips. There was something familiar about the gesture, like the final piece of a puzzle clicking into place. Kissing Mattheo was as natural as breathing. It felt like coming home.
“Wish granted, princess.”
Later that night when he blew out his candles, Mattheo didn’t bother wishing for anything. You leaned into him as he hooked his pinkie through yours, making a silent promise. Even if it took a little jealousy for him to realize it, Mattheo embraced the truth wholeheartedly. You were his person and he was yours. As the flames died out, he smiled.
Mattheo Riddle had no use for wishes now that he had you.
