Braid, Anniversary Edition review, 5/25/24

Amazing game. Amazing remaster. Switching back and forth between the old and the new graphics will blow your mind. It looks exactly how you remember it, until you switch to the old graphics and realize how much of that is nostalgia, and how age has not been kind.

Unfortunately, the developers have seen fit to use machine translation for the Japanese version of the game (and possibly others), when the original Japanese translation was very well-crafted. For the commentary, this renders it completely inscrutable as the machine translation cannot intuit the context of what is being said. This renders the game largely inaccessible for a non-negligible amount of its audience. Worse yet, the original Braid has been taken down from sale, meaning new players are stuck with this subpar translation effort.

At bare minimum, a mode should be added allowing for the original, pre-Anniversary Japanese translation (and any other affected translations) to be used. Ideally, this would entail them hiring an actual translation company like 8-4, Ltd. to also translate the commentary, but having the commentary be in English would suffice if the funds for proper localization do not exist, because at least then they would not be shipping the game with a translation that is, to be blunt, patently incomprehensible.

It is absolutely shameful for Braid, one of the most historically important indie games to release, to release in this state. Machine translation offers no value to the people who need it, at best making the game's text wooden and broken, at worst making it entirely inaccessible and incomprehensible. It saves time and money, but it robs localizers of jobs, of work, for no benefit to anyone. This is a game that helped set the early standard for what indie games were and could be. It is art. Art deserves a translation that can convey its weight and meaning, and is equally artful as the original text. And art owes localizers, artists in their own right, the dignity to not have their jobs stolen by subpar, deficient machines that can produce something that at best only sounds accurate, but misses the je ne sais quoi, the message, the heart, of the text.

When taken in Japanese, this is a Braid without its 精髄.

Nearly two decades on, Braid still refuses to show its age. A game whose varied ideas and smart execution remain one of the puzzle genre's finest showings. The Anniversary Edition doesn't so much attempt to fix what was never broken to begin with, but instead adds a rich assortment of visual and audible enhancements, on top of what is surprisingly as in-depth and varied a commentary on the game as you can get.

My favorite SMG34 Headcanons are...

SMG4 is very much the oblivious sun pair with three as the tsundere pining moon.

Three does better cooking than smg4 but he teaches for some ways so that he wouldn't always have to rely the cooking for him.

SMG4 shows three some funny memes to where sometimes he may or may not understand the humors of it but still smiles. (He appreciates it)

SMG4 is the big spoon and three is the small spoon

SMG4 is a slight inch taller than SMG3

When three skips a shower a day, Four would overreact and will demand Three to take a bath.

When one of them feels sad, they cuddle up each other and talk out some stuff (comfort leading to laughter)

SMG4 would brush Three's long hair because he loves how wavy it is

Despite Three annoyed with Four's teasing from his hair, he allows him to pat his head.

They both dont like public affection so they do it on their own time in private.

Three does find fashion interesting and organizing stuff properly while Four finds memes funny and has some- sense of humor

SMG4 would tease three and he would fluster up from his words.

There are some times four would flirt as always, there are some other times that Three flirts back making Four blush.

Three lets four do his long hair (either braid, ponytail, half ponytail, or pigtails)

Three is the first to come out as pansexual before SMG4 did.

SMG4 is rarely aware if three really is pansexual

SMG3 figured four was bisexual after 2020

SMG3 has black nails while SMG4 only has plain ones

SMG4 does feel a bit heart touched when he get some times where Three treats Eggdog as his son.

SMG4 would sometimes stare at Three's lips while he sleeps, SMG3 would always stare at four's eyes

Red resembles love and compassion, so four would sometimes bring Three a red rose or two in special occassions.

They both sometimes forget their anniversary but they still make it up for each other.

In a movie theatre when watching. SMG3 and SMG4 would be paying attention to the screen, next by step- Four starts to gain on his senses and ends up staring at Three for a couple or a few minutes. (He loves how three would express his own emotion because he rarely does it.)

SMG4 likes to blow bubbles while Three sometimes uses cigarettes

Coping mechanisms. Four edits his videos, Three would stream and play games on his twitch chat.

Four would sometimes watch Three's twitch stream while he plays and leaves anonymous replies (a joke or something else to vibe with three making him have fun for a bit)

In some other times when three is near four, he could smell that his hair stinks and may had said that out loud to him to the point he went outrageous and left.

Since four doesn't know how to deal with emotions, he searches stuff from google about hair products that would go alright with three. (He thinks as a good helping hand friend- you get to also care with hygiene)

SMG4 felt really bad for three judging with his low self doubt on himself

But now four finally understands, he wants to change.

SMG4 has Autism (for misunderstanging people's emotions)

SMG3 has Adhd (getting a little bit distracted)

SMG4 stays by his side so that they both don't get separated.

SMG3 keeps four safe by putting him to safety first before he takes care of himself

SMG4 may not have did much for three but he still loves to annoy him with kindness and goofyness

SMG3 is the one to carry four in bridal style (even tho it was supposed to be four)

SMG4 does his daily routine where when he wakes up, brushes his teeth, and use shaving cream.

Tho SMG3 does the opposite. He wakes up to make his own morning coffee and take care of the cafe and his eggdog.

     lamina’s thick, red hair combed through your fingers as you parted it into three separate sections, beginning the works of a braid. both of your schedules had finally aligned, allowing you to spend your free time with the girl for the first time in a while. wind blew in from the open window, causing the dainty curtains to flutter, and the cool draft gave you goosebumps. lamina was humming a familiar tune, an old generational lullaby, as your finger got to work, expertly twisting her auburn hair into a simple but classy braid. these days were the ones you cherished the most. serene, intimate, nothing but tranquil as lamina and you simply focused on your eternal love for each other. 

     the two of you were patiently awaiting the baked goods lamina had made to finish cooking in the oven. it was rare that lamina and you ever got to enjoy sweets, as the ingredients were very hard to come by. knowing how much lamina loved to bake, though, you had saved up to buy everything she would need. lamina must have been keeping track of the time, because as soon as you finished with her hair, she sprung up, walking over to the oven. as she pulled the assortment of sweets out, carefully placing them on the countertop, the aroma filled the room. it was mouthwatering, sickeningly sweet, just like lamina. it wasn’t a bad thing, being overly sweet. if anything, it put you into even more of a sugar craze. you couldn’t get enough of her and her baking.

     in total, she had made three short of a dozen shortbread cookies, even though they may have been slightly out of season. you would eat anything she made, though, knowing she did it all with love. while she tended to her sweets, you snuck outside the back door, allowing your bare feet to connect with the grass. there was a patch of daisies out back. small, white flowers that you plucked individually, cradling them in your palm as you slipped back inside. lamina had displayed her cookies on an old, plate of china. the lone dish had been an anniversary gift to her parents. rimmed with gold paint, with small, orange flowers embroidered on it as well. lamina beckoned for you to sit, but you were on a mission, walking up behind her. the girl was confused, but trusted you enough that she wasn’t bothered. you took the daisies, weaving them into her braid as a final touch. you couldn’t help but smile at your handiwork. the white of the flower was a gorgeous juxtaposition against her auburn hair.

     “beautiful,” she grinned at your compliment, cupping your face with her hand. grabbing one of the cookies, lamina held it up for you to try. you didn’t hesitate in taking a bite, groaning in delectation as the flavor overwhelmed your senses. lamina never missed when baking. it was her passion, after all. and she was yours.

Over the last five months of living together, more and more of Marjan’s colourful, coordinated decor has made its way into the apartment, and Nancy is surprised by how much she loves it. There’s been nothing like coming home alone after a shift when their schedules don’t align and seeing a new fond little reminder of Marjan to smile about. Colourful and cutesy may not be her style at all, but it’s so quintessentially Marjan, and that never fails to make her smile. 

She wraps her arms around Marjan from behind, breathing in her comforting signature scent, a fruity floral fragrance with notes of raspberry and roses, before pressing a quick, sleepy kiss to her neck, “Good morning, my love.”

“Happy six-month anniversary, Nance,” Marjan murmurs, turning in Nancy’s embrace and stretching on her tiptoes to wrap her arms around her neck and kiss her. It’s a light, delicate kiss, a stark contrast to the desperate and passionate ones that Marjan had trailed down her torso and thighs mere hours ago.

“Happy Anniversary, Marj,” Nancy replies; they break apart, and Marjan hands her a mug of coffee.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY to Fire Emblem: Three Houses! The Fire Emblem game that finally convinced me to get into FE 😂 I was a big Suikoden V fan when Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn came out for the Wii and I was about to get it, but people on forums were like "If you're a Suikoden fan only, you won't enjoy FE because of PERMADEATH and it's REALLY HARD" so I swore them off for over a decade (the irony that I got really into Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn down the road though and I cosplay Ena XD). Fast forward to 2019 when Three Houses was coming out and I got to work with Faye Mata at a convention I was graphic designer for. Her character Petra was so intriguing to me so I ended up binge watching all three routes of the game. I had bought a Timeskip Petra outfit on AliExpress, but due to COVID, it was questionable when I was going to receive it. I got a refund and then sent my friend MagicalAni the funds to help me with the sewing and beading. I did the wig dying and styling, armor work, sword modding, and all the other accessories besides the beading. I also created her tattoos in Illustrator and printed them out on tattoo paper. I ended up getting her school uniform on Miccostumes as well. For that version of her hair, I just braid the wig and call it a day. No separate wig necessary (except the dye does run a bit on the blouse if it's too hot; but that's easily editable if it gets too bad). I've been so lucky to be a part of a few FE3H photoshoots over the years. I am still trying to find a Dorothea to take photos with though!
