I'm fairly new to the batman fandom, but today I was reminded of my favorite preteen batman animated series back in the early 2000s (damn I'm getting old 🫠) : Batman Beyond. And it got me thinking and I did some digging and found (fan-created) timelines about the ages of the characters.

So they theorize Bruce is 77 and Terry is 16 in Batman Beyond. Now I know that i’m mixing different media here (comics and DCAU), but if we go under the batman all media types umbrella, Bruce being 77 would make (again based on fan made ages analyses) Dick 62, Jason 57, Tim 55, Damian 49.

And I’m just think it would be interesting to explore these characters’ reactions to suddenly seeing a helluva young batman (at the same age they were still just Robins) roaming Gotham and kicking ass. And their enstranged toxic-as-fuck father figure bringing another teen into the bat-game AND giving that new kid the mantle (not that they'd want it for themselves, but I think it would still just rub them wrong?)

As I'm typing this I'm realizing there might actually already be numerous stories out there exploring this and I just haven't read any yet, but it just came to me and I thought it is an interesting premise to explore. Also trying to imagine all the Robins so old is 🤯

So yeah, if you happen to know of any fics like this I'd love some recs (I'll research for some myself later). And I really think that's something I might write myself at some point.

Pride Petty Watch (SOTUS) 1/5

The crowd picked two blacklisted shows for me to watch during Pride, which were Love in the Air and The Untamed, and so even though I finished the first, I've stalled on the second, and it's all because of the beast named SOTUS. I watched this show when it aired in 2016, but I don't remember any of it. All I remember is that I'm very mad at it, yet this was the wild card show that was unlocked during the voting, so instead of fearing this show so much that I cannot bring myself to finish The Untamed, I'm going straight to the big boss, and fighting this demon NOW!

It's me and the gear in a battle until the very end, and even though I cannot remember a single thing about this show, as soon as I pressed play, all the hate in my body rose to the surface, so I already know this is going to be a ~journey~

First and foremost, I'm going to give this show and Krist a compliment because I HATE Arthit, which is exactly what I should be doing in the first episode. He is 🎶The Worst🎶 and he leans all the way into it. He snarls. He yells. He forces a girl to give him her number through mere power dynamics and sexism, and this isn't just 2024-me thinking this. 2016-me knows that this character is written well because the worst thing Arthit can think of doing to another man is making him say he is gay.

Then to casually whisper in that man's ear that he could find him a skirt to wear . . .

Arthit really is the epitome of the homophobe-to-homo character and I can't believe that it worked in 2016 since I feel that was late for a character like this to still be a love interest, yet it's still working so well in 2024 because here I am, pissed, pressed, and ready to fuck him up for being the douchiest bro in this damn cafeteria. It's refreshing how much I'm allowed to hate him.

Because even the way he screams Kongpob's name with his student ID every fucking two seconds is setting me off.

And I'm very disappointed in BL Land for only ONE video existing of him screaming Kongpob's name, and it's only the times from the first half of the first episode. Thanks, OP, but we are slacking!

But, honestly, if I had a boy who looked up at me like this every time I screamed his name, I'd probably be a lot worse than Arthit. You know, instigating fights and hands on me or something like that.

And now I'm questioning this series because if these two would just choke each other out then kiss, I would be fully for it and enjoying all my snacks along the way. I'd be fine with Kongpob telling the entire room he would make Arthit his bitch, but Kongpob instead says he'll make Arthit his wife, and . . . the vibe is not as kinky as I need it to be to support all that is being thrown at me from these two.

Which is why I'm heavily shipping Kongpob with M! Kongpob got in trouble for having two books, one which was M's, and had to say he liked men. Now, they are drunk at this table with homophobe Arthit and the hazers are staring them down while Kongpob is just holding M's face.

But let me actually rewatch this show instead of reflecting on how GMMTV messed this enemies AND lovers premise up twice (looking at you, Dangerous Romance) because right now, this show is trying to make me believe the girls would not wave hello to a babyface Off.

Once again, back to the actual rewatch, and because I don't remember a thing about this, I don't know if Wad is good or bad, but him busting out this move when Prem told him to apologize was equivalent to an older white Southern Christian woman telling someone to have a blessed day, so I felt that shade through the screen!

And I'm not victim-blaming, but I do actually think Kongpob and Arthit are trying to push each buttons to see who will break first and fuck (up) the other one because this is not a sane answer to "why did you stay?" when the possibility of the hazers physically harming someone is extremely high.

I only see my Kongpob and M ship now because when Arthit asked if anyone knew M, Kongpob immediately stood up and knew his entire life story. I have known my best friends for decades, and I still could not recite half of that information. Kongpob, what are the heterosexual reasons for you know any of this information about M?

Once again, Arthit is 🎶The Fucking Worst🎶 because instead of just taking his L, he made Kongpob say everyone's damn name, then ripped up May's name tag, only to scold Kongpob for giving her his, and now the kids are passing out from his ridiculous physical activities! As a member of a Greek-letter organization who was hazed because that was the culture of the time period, Arthit is being soooooo messy!

Hear me out - Kongpob and M would be so good together! Arthit is the antagonist. Kongpob is the protagonist who meets a sweet quiet boy on his first day of orientation. He helps the sweet quiet boy come out of his shell and watches over him. He cares for him. THEY FALL IN LOVE!

But instead I'm getting a love interest who nominated Kongpob because he knows he is cute, yet can't admit it because ~internalized homophobia~ Ryan from The OC would have never treated Seth this way, and they were in the early 2000s. What is your excuse, Arthit?! The show wants me to hate you, and for that, I'm thankful.

But I could never hate Minnie! Arthit came up quick like he was protecting the boys from Minnie being a predator, but Minnie would NEVER! I could never fear Minnie with the bisexual scarf? And now MDL is telling me the actor has only acted in one other series and that series is Deep Night. Gold star resume, and I truly mean that.

Look at them. LOOK AT THEM! Tell me they don't look good together. Tell me they wouldn't have wrecked every other ship. This is why I need GMMTV to let these MEN (no longer boys) kiss their homies. Kongpob x M. Singto x New. I ship it.

Arthit is wildin' out here trying to gaslight Kongpob with this bullshit of "if you keep helping out your friends, then they'll never stand on their own." Sir, you wanna fuck Kongpob so bad, you look stupid.

I cannot stress enough how kinky this is and could have been if 2016 BL Land was allowed to lean into this because Kongpob has already established through his actions that he likes showing up for the punishments, and here he says the quiet part very loudly - Arthit likes punishing him.

Taking a break from the kink to point out that GMMTV was always going to get My Love Mix-Up because in 2016, May's friend said that "In Japan, if you write down the name of your crush on an eraser and use it, that person will love you"

Then we have May asking for an eraser and keeping it just so she can write Kongpob's name on it. But who gets upset about it? M! Because he loves Kongpob and I'm not accepting that he likes May just like Atom realized he liked a boy instead of girl eight years later. M loves Kongpob. That is my truth!

And here comes the kink lite again! Kongpob could leave. He doesn't have to take this verbal abuse from Arthit. He doesn't have to eat that damn spicy ass plate of food. He doesn't have to finish it either because Arthit gets up and leaves, yet HE DOES! Because he likes this treatment. This makes sense if it's sadomasochism, and that will guide me through these next couple of episodes.

Because the decision to make Arthit the one who likes pink milk is a choice, and now I want an entire TED Talk on how Arthit is probably the most well done homophobic bully with internationalized homophobia falling in love with the boy he is bullying.

Because, joke's on him, the guy he falls for is into that kind of shit.

And all of this happens so we can end with Kongpob getting pink milk for himself after he finished an entire spicy meal that he didn't need to since he enjoys being punished should make me so happy, but the show is trying to lighten Arthit's behavior by having him pay for the bill (and get the freshmen food, and having been hazed himself, and blah blah blah) instead of just letting the toxicito be toxic and Kongpob being into it.

I never thought I'd write this, but I don't want Arthit to be tamed. I want him to be so much worse.

He needed a distraction, something to pull him away from the constant pressure of the BAU, and you had just the thing in mind: introducing him to one of your favorite video game series, Resident Evil. But it wasn’t going to be just any introduction. You decided to make it special by cosplaying as one of the strongest, most badass characters in the series.

Hotch sat on the couch, already looking intrigued when you mentioned the game earlier. He wasn’t one for video games, but he respected your interests and was open to anything that might help him relax.

You disappeared into the bedroom for a few minutes, changing into the outfit you’d carefully pieced together: a sky-blue tube top, black mini-skirt, combat boots, and fingerless gloves. To complete the look, you strapped a plastic replica of Jill Valentine’s gun holster around your leg and even added the S.T.A.R.S. badge to your arm. You checked yourself in the mirror once, adjusting your ponytail and the cap to make sure it was perfect before stepping out.

As soon as you walked into the living room, Hotch’s eyes widened slightly, his posture straightening. He took in the sight of you. A small smile tugged at his lips, and he leaned back, his arms crossing over his chest as he admired your dedication.

“Well,” he began, his voice low and amused, “this is certainly a unique way to introduce me to a video game.”

You gave him a playful smirk, striking a pose just like Jill would, standing strong and confident with your hand on your hip. “I thought you might appreciate a little bit of immersion.”

Hotch chuckled, but there was a spark of genuine appreciation in his eyes. “I have to admit, it’s working. You look incredible.”

You walked over to him, handing him the controller as you settled beside him. “Okay, so here’s the deal,” you began, your tone more serious now as you explained the game’s premise. “You’re about to enter Raccoon City, a town infested with zombies and other terrifying creatures. Jill Valentine - me - has to survive and stop Umbrella’s bioweapons from spreading.”

Hotch raised a brow, glancing at you in your attire. “And you just happen to look this good while doing it?”

“Of course,” you teased, leaning in closer. “Jill’s a pro. Nothing phases her. Plus, I thought you might need a little encouragement to stick with it.”

He smiled, his thumb brushing against the controller as he adjusted it in his hands. “I think I’ll manage just fine. As long as you’re guiding me.”

The evening went on, the two of you alternating between playing and laughing as you coached Hotch through the game. But you noticed how, every so often, his gaze would drift away from the screen to take you in, his appreciation for your dedication clear. It wasn’t long before Hotch paused the game, setting the controller down.

“You know,” he began, his voice soft but intense as he looked at you, “I’m starting to think this game isn’t the only thing you’re trying to distract me with.”

You grinned, tilting your head as you leaned closer to him. “Maybe… but is it working?”

Hotch reached out, his hand resting on your knee, his thumb tracing soft circles over the fabric of your mini-skirt. “Oh, it’s definitely working.”

I think there’s a mentality in the Stranger Things fandom, or certainly outside of Byler spaces, that Byler is just another m/m ship.

What do I mean by “just another” m/m ship?

We all know there’s a long history of shipping male characters together when the show they were in clearly had no intentional romantic subplot.

M/m shipping has existed since the days of Star Trek - and it’s existed for many different reasons. But over time, it’s developed a bad reputation because fans of those ships were reading into things way too much and had so much hope that something might happen to those characters, only for them to end up incredibly upset and frustrated by the end.

There has also been a lot of accusations of fetishisation.

Some of this is also because especially in the early 2000s/ 2010s, these shows used to play on those hopes and have a lot of fun exploring “bromances”, where the writing would be intentionally stirring the pot, but not crossing the line enough for there to be any real plan to take things further.

What’s really important here is that Byler are NOT that kind of ship.

There would never be this much animosity if Will was Mike’s female best friend from childhood.

Yes, there would be a Byler vs. Milkvan war. That would never change - but the excuses as to why Byler have no possible chance of being together would be entirely different. Because yes, their arguments can currently include that Mike’s in a long term relationship, or that the 1980s environment would make it difficult for them to be together, but that’s about as realistic as the arguments have been.

Compare the circumstances to other canonical unrequited love stories

Take away all of the analysis about why Mike might be gay or Bi or even interested in Will in the first place, and just look at the plot in its bare bones state.

Will is canonically in love with Will, and Mike is canonically unaware of this and in a relationship with El.

There are SO MANY examples of this sort of love triangle in fiction, and most importantly there are more scenarios than there aren’t of this love becoming requited. It’s so normal for an audience to see a scenario like this and wonder if this is going to be one of those stories.

What’s happening instead is a lot of heteronormativity.

And that’s either down to the environment that Stranger Things fans find themselves in (people still live very unexposed lives) or they are just generally ignorant about anything that isn’t really in their face or what they want to see.

So there’s a heck of a lot of fans who didn’t even recognise that Will is gay, or just disregarded their assumptions and played up the “slow to grow up” narrative because they were more comfortable with that kind of story, or could relate to it more.

And so from their point of view, because they didn’t see anything, it couldn’t possibly exist. Bylers were seeing things and making them up. Now, after the Duffers and Noah confirmed things, they’re finding a lot of comfort in instead taking some of this fandoms bigger reaches (don’t mean to offend here, sorry) and using them as ammunition instead, e.g. Finn glancing at Noah’s lips for a millisecond during a take.

But the main point I’m getting at is that people who are dismissing Byler are not recognising that this is a traditional love triangle premise.

Now compare the canonical story to previous m/m ships

So because there are some similar activities happening in this fandom to what has been seen in those previous famous m/m ship fandoms, many Stranger Things fans are dismissing Byler as an imagined ship.

But how many of those old ships were able to boast about actual confirmed feelings, albeit one sided, with time left to explore things further?

There is absolutely no reason why the Byler ship resembles any of those “bromances” or queer baiting storylines in previous franchises and fiction.

This isn’t me saying that Byler will 100% become a couple

What I’m saying is that if nothing happens between them in season 5, that doesn’t undo the fact that Byler are a legitimate ship. It doesn’t undo the fact that Will’s feelings for Mike are canonical and that their storyline follows the premise of a traditional love triangle story.

There are people out there who are already trying to make Bylers feel stupid or ashamed for even exploring the potential of the ship, and all they’re doing is showing us how incredibly ignorant they are.

But that’s not to say that lessons can’t be learned from those previous m/m ship disasters

The one thing you should take from them is that people did get really attached, and so being let down by the show really hurt. It’s fine to speculate about Byler, but please don’t set your heart on them and let it break.

If we start to get legit info or confirmation that the ship won’t be requited, please don’t let yourself fall down the rabbit hole of conspiracy and set yourself up for disappointment.

But we have no legitimate reason to rule out Byler right now

The set up is there, the filming looks positive and the Duffers haven’t said anything to dispute the ship’s potential. Speculation is more than allowed - it’s normal and an inevitable result of season 4. So let’s have as much fun as we can and know that we’re doing nothing “deluded” or wrong.

Bitter Jealousy

Pepper hadn’t expected to feel jealous.

She had ended things with Tony. She was always the one to end things with Tony and had had a… certainty that if she was ever ready to try again, that he’d be there.

Something about Tony had simply seemed… inevitable.

This didn’t feel like inevitability.

Tony’s laugh could be heard, distinct in the hubbub of the gala where he was in conversation with a CEO on the list Pepper had given him to ‘make nice with’. Pepper watched as he smiled up at his date. Doctor Stephen Strange. Not his press smile, but his soft, genuine one that Pepper had always thought should be hoarded away so that the vultures couldn’t see it.

Tony had smiled at her like that. In a way that she thought he’d never smile at anyone else.

Pepper had treasured that smile.

Doctor Strange smiled back at Tony. Pepper didn’t know him well enough to know whether this was his press smile or not—if Doctor Strange even had one of those—but the way the skin around his eyes crinkled made her think it might be real.

Pepper looked away, focusing back on networking with the CEOs of several Big Pharma companies.

When she looked again, it was to find that Tony and Doctor Strange were on the dance floor. Tony’s arms were around Doctor Strange’s neck, Doctor Strange’s hands low on Tony’s back.

Tony and Doctor Strange were gathering looks, but neither man seemed to care. Tony was hardly unexpected in that, Tony never had cared. Doctor Strange… Pepper had looked into him, confident and cocky and invested in his appearance. Doctor Strange should care.

For one bitter moment, Pepper wished she’d never demanded Tony go to the hospital after his lab accident, minor as it’d been. Wished the hospital hadn’t tried to impress Tony with their very best. Wished that Doctor Strange hadn’t looked at Tony and seen past all of the bluster to the truth of who Tony was beneath it all.

But she had, the hospital had, Doctor Strange had. And now Tony was here with someone else.

Jealousy was a bitter thing. She was supposed to be better than that. She was supposed to be happy for Tony.

So why was it so hard?

A tap on her elbow drew her attention back to the world around her. She didn’t recognize the man who’d tapped, but she could guess, some CEO here to impress—though the firetruck red tie with darker red stripes was… an interesting choice at a black tie event. “I see you’re watching the dance floor,” he said smoothly. “Would you like to dance?”

It wasn’t the dance floor she’d been watching.

Still, she smiled, accepted.

The dance was uncomfortable the way so many of them were. Pepper escaped as soon and as graciously as she could, leaving talks of contracts and potential mergers—as though SI ever would—on the dance floor.

Tony and Doctor Strange were at the bar, now. As she watched, Doctor Strange stole the glass from Tony’s hand, throwing back the rest of the drink himself before sliding the glass away. Somehow she knew that that would be Tony’s last drink of the night. Tony looked more amused than offended.

She wasn’t surprised when Tony and Doctor Strange disappeared the moment it was acceptable—part of her was surprised Tony managed to last that long—and she wished she didn’t know what they were probably doing.

If it was just sex… Pepper could have handled that. But it wasn’t. She’d gone to the tower early one day, needing Tony to do something or other than she could no longer remember, and she’d found them sprawled out on the couch fast asleep, still dressed in their clothes from the day before, holograms projected in front of them where they’d been discussing something she hadn’t understood.

It would have been so much easier if it was just sex. 

Pepper left the gala not long after, herself, even though there were people still on her list to talk to.

Just… not tonight.

Tonight she could let herself hurt. Tomorrow… tomorrow she’d be happy for Tony. Tomorrow she’d figure out how to make the jealousy go away.

Tonight… Tonight she let herself wish that Doctor Strange and Tony had never met.

I will admit that it never occurred to me that I would need to check the history book that claimed to be scholarly to see if it used references and footnotes, because how could a book be a scholarly work on history without such things, BUT NOW I KNOW BETTER.

i'm very interested what ppl find to be the harder shakespeare plays and which they found to be easier. bc i was googling out of curiosity and i found a sparknotes article (link if you're curious) that ranked ten of the most commonly-read plays on difficulty and it put king lear kinda down low whereas it put julius caesar pretty high because of the politics/complicated conflicts. that kind of baffled me because julius caesar was the first tragedy i read outside of the classroom and i found it very approachable; it's one i often recommend to people trying to get into shakespeare because the plot is already familiar to most ppl and you can just enjoy the poetry and how shakespeare chooses to characterize these figures. on the other hand i read king lear a few years later in my shakespeare journey, and to be honest i still kind of have a hard time with lear. maybe i just don't connect with it on some level; i'm not sure. it's not a very tightly-organized play where the action is as centered as in the other tragedies like hamlet or macbeth. that's certainly a me thing and maybe that'll change with age. but i'm always a little surprised when i find someone's experience with the plays so much different than mine.

if it were up to ME i would have pulled the teen o5 to the present day like. pretty much immediately after charles faked his death and while everyone still thought he was dead. bc then to me you get the fun thing of the o5 x-men being forced together in the future at a time when they are becoming more separated in their present, and you also get the fun dynamic of all the x-men in the 'present' being mad at scott for killing xavier while all the o5 x-men are mad at jean for lying about xavier being dead.

hey so you know that thing that a bunch of medias are doing now. where the whole premise is exploring abrahamic/judeochristian mythology and cosmology and being like "Hey this is pretty fucked up" and making god/the angels/heaven the bad guys actually? Good Omens did it, Hazbin Hotel did it, Darksiders did it, the Salvation Wars did it, just as some examples. EDIT: just remembered, The Good Place kinda does this, Bayonetta defs does this, and as far as i know the devil may cry games are kinda like this too? And then they are about how some of the concepts of either abrahamic or (usually just) the christian religion is bad? And also they are kinda edgy too i've noticed. And also they can be like the first thing to open the eyes of people in that religion to some contradictions in theology and also some bad stuff that that religion is/does?

First: is there a name for this trope, genre or concept?

Second: is there any media that does the same but for other religions? like, using buddhism as an example: the equivalent might be if there was a hypothetical edgy anti-buddhist anime about the characters realizing "hey nirvana is bad actually let's stay in the cycle of samsara where all of our loved ones and cool earthly possessions are" and then buddha and an army of boddhisatvas come down to try to stop them or something? and it would also probably touch on the problematic traits of the ways buddhism is used to hurt people? that's kinda the vibe of the edgy anti-christian media i listed, and so I'm curious if this is mostly a western thing made about christianity or if there are (popular modern) works that do that
