I made a Hanahaki/flower language post for Yin Yu week and was excited to make one for Feng Xin week too so here it is! (Under the cut)
I picked a lot of flowers that have meanings associated with strength and loyalty. And I couldn't help but laugh at any that had a sexual meaning thanks to Ju Yang. Because he is a god any that mean longevity, success, and glory also fit. Rivalry or Cruelty meanings could be used for FengQing. And any that mean painful recollections or grief are for FengLian. Although you can take these and do whatever you'd like with them! Somehow I ended up with more of a salad than a bouquet for Feng Xin and I think that's so funny.
I hope this post sparks inspiration for someone!
Disclaimer: Most flower meanings are western although when I could I included Chinese meanings.
Tumblr media
Chinese Chives: Courage, strength. Chinese: prosperity, renewal, attracts good qi in feng shui
Tumblr media
Geranium: fertility, friendship, protection, stupidity
Tumblr media
Gladiolus: Flowers of the gladiators, give me a break, I'm sincere, ready armed, strength, strength of character, you pierce my heart
Tumblr media
Sunflowers: ambitious, loyalty, power, strength, vitality. Chinese: longevity, good fortune, vitality, happiness, adoration, and loyalty.
Tumblr media
Garden Cress: always reliable, power, stability, courage, and daring.
Tumblr media
Crab cactus: dependability, loyalty. Chinese cactus general meaning: protection, luck, and prosperity
Tumblr media
Cilantro: peace between those of us who don't get along. Chinese meanings: good luck, prosperity, fertility, and abundance.
Tumblr media
Arugula: rivalry
Tumblr media
Common fig: argument, desire, longevity
Tumblr media
Malva/Mallow: consumed by love, cruelty between lovers. Chinese meanings: personal glory, protection, and safety.
Tumblr media
Mugwort: declaration against you, happiness, hostility. Chinese: A common medicinal herb. Specifically cited as an ingredient to help with vomiting blood due to qi deviations.
Tumblr media
Yarrow: Courage, heartache, love, war. Chinese: healing.
Tumblr media
Adonis: Painful Recollections, recollections of life's pleasures, sad memories.
Tumblr media
Cardamine: "paternal error." I have no idea what this is supposed to mean, but all I can think of is Cuo Cuo being a "paternal error."
Bonus! Imagine this: Feng Xin sees these (below) growing in the mortal realm after answering a prayer and wants to do something nice or maybe make up after a fight or something.
Tumblr media
So he plucks some, brings them back and gives them to Mu Qing who immediately throws a fit because is Feng Xin mocking him? What other reason would Feng Xin bring him a bouquet of Common Broom Flowers? The only meaning of this flower? Sweep.
Anyway if anyone uses any of these ideas in art or fic please let me know!

𝓐 𝓑𝓻𝓲𝓮𝓯 𝓗𝓲𝓼𝓽𝓸𝓻𝔂 𝓸𝓯 𝓘𝓶𝓫𝓸𝓵𝓬
Imbolc is a Celtic tradition that marks the halfway point between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. The Celtic pagan holiday falls on February 1st-2nd and heralds the change of the seasons and the shift from the dark days to the sun filled days ahead. This celebration, from information gathered from Irish poetry, dates back to early 10th century. From informaton gleamed the holiday was originally around the veginning of spring and aligned more towards rebirth. However, we can justify this with the meanjng of the word Imbolc. The holiday's name means 'in the belly of the mother' and within the earth at this time sturs the seeds of spring.
Brigid resides over this holiday and was originally worshipped by a class of poets and historians called the Filid. Brigid is a Celtic fire and fertility goddess, daughter of Dagda, lineage of the Tuath du Danann, and deemed one of the most powerful Celtic deities. It is also believed that she is a triple goddess due to the fact that she has two sisters with the same name but they seem to represent different aspects which is very much the summize of most triple deities. As time moved away from paganism Brigid was adopted into Christianity as St. Brigid and was still saint/goddess of dairy maids, cattle, midwives, newborns and nuns.
Per https://www.history.com/topics/holidays/imbolc:
"Brigid appears in the saga Cath Maige Tuired and the Lebor Gabála Érenn, a purported history of Ireland collected from various poems and texts in the 10th century."
"Myths about Brigid’s birth say she was born with a flame in her head and drank the milk of a mystical cow from the spirit world. Brigid is credited with the very first keening, a traditional wailing for the dead practiced at funerals by Irish and Scottish women."

what's philippines' relationship with faith?
Tumblr media
Yup, I have hwspirilovebot for seatalia but that's alright! I can answer asks here too
And this news right here sums up Filipino faith:
Tumblr media
Okay but jokes aside, Piri is definitely religious and superstitious. Spiritual? Hmmm. He will get there one day. Besides, how Piri's relationship with faith is viewed depends on his age. Here's an oversimplified timeline of what religions dominated the PH archipelago through the centuries:
Ancient: Animism
800s: Buddhism and Hinduism
1300s: Islam
1500s: Christianity
Modern: Buddhism, Taoism, and Hinduism from Chinese and Indian immigrants, Judaism from Jewish refugees, more Christian denominations, etc.
Some headcanon that Piri is a representation of a precolonial chiefdom, for example, if he was Sugbu (modern day Cebu), he would be practicing a combination of Animism, Hinduism, and Buddhism, before being baptised as a Roman Catholic in the 1500s. If he was Maynila, then it would be the aforementioned 3 with Islam (but he still ate pork in that era, lmao). Some also headcanon that Piri was born in 1521 when Magellan gifted Rajah Humabon with the Santo Niño upon the latter's baptism, and in that case, his relationship with faith will also be different (@sweaty-clouds can expound on this better than I do 🤧)
I view that Piri was born due to the intramarriages and intramigration within the archipelago that came to be known as the Philippines. I have no specific date yet, but it's sometime in the 1300s or earlier.
There are tons of belief systems in the country, different set of Deities and Anitos for every ethnolinguistic group and indigenous group. Some are remembered, many are forgotten. Not all are worshipped as the dominant religions are monotheistic.
The Philippines is a Roman Catholic-dominant (but under the constitution, the church and the state are separate, and you are free to practice your religion), and my Piri practiced it under Spanish colonization until today. Discrimination against indigenous people and Muslims are rampant, and Christian denominations fight each other on who worships God better and who goes to Heaven (spoilers: none of you)
Now, faith.
Faith in Tagalog has many words but the one I hear the most in churches is "sampalataya" which came from the Sanskrit word, sampratyaya (सम्प्रत्यय). We often use Diyos but when reading folklores, you will regularly come across the word Bathala which also came from Sanskrit: Batthara (भट्टार). Our fairies, Diwata, came from Sanskrit as well: Devata (देवता). Despite the dominance of Catholic faith, the Hindu-Buddhist roots are still present. Other precolonial anitist beliefs such as dancing the Obando Fertility Rites are also still practiced. We politely say excuse me (tabi-tabi po) when hiking in forests in the belief that it is the realm of spiritual entities or that the environment itself has spirits.
My version of Piri grew up practicing many belief systems, depending on which personification was his assigned guardian, but if you want to survive, you have to assimilate to the dominant culture. He was definitely a sacristan, until he became a revolutionary. He still prays, attends the mass, volunteers in the church, and participates in holy days and feasts for almost every saint today.
He doesn't sweep the floor at night as it sweeps away luck, and maybe it's just a coincidence that the Goddess Lakshmi will walk out of your house if you sweep your place after sunset. He wears an agimat or anting-anting (amulet) and despite having a medical degree, he still carries a lana (a concoction of oil and herbs to ward off evil entities). He can exorcise demons and drive away tiktik (that baby-eating monster targetting pregnant women) too. Perhaps he has an altar in his house that has both the crucifix and a Buddha statue. Oh, and he still gives babies that red and black beaded bracelet and the red pouch for protection. Pwera Usog or Pwera Buyag! (Fuera Curse, to repel a hex)
Piri's not agnostic, but he sure rolls his eyes during homilies when the priests shuns people who believes in precolonial or pagan beliefs, and he definitely cringes at fuccboys who have John 3:16 in their bio.
What else did I miss? Piri's Catholic guilt? The way my dad did the sign of the cross in front of a giant Buddha statue when we went to Thailand? or one of my friends visiting my other friend's condo and saying "Yup. This is bad Fung Shui", but there's a rosary on his doorknob so it balances out
There are tons of mythological creatures too, and the babaylan who was demonized and now referred to as a mangkukulam, but my brain is just not braining at the moment and I feel like I answered more about religion rather than faith but I still hope this still answers your question, anon.
TLDR: Folk Christianity, but this needs more thoughts from Filipinos of other religions

Health Around The World: Western vs Chinese
So, I don’t have the greatest relationship with doctors even in the western world as an American having grown up in USA. But my partner is from the Eastern side of the world. Normally I go to doctors, and find disappointment in the lack of natural solutions, and often answers. Which I still find shocking given how much science and technology we have these days. But, I recently went to a Chinese Doctor and man...that was an interesting comparative experience.
Tumblr media
Western Medicine:
So anyone following my blog knows that I have some chronic conditions, which I have seen some doctors about and have adjusted my lifestyle for-compensating with drugs. But while dealing with infertility, I experienced abdominal/pelvic pain. I checked the pelvis out with an ultrasound, nothing there. Then I went to a Family Doctor and ordered a CT Scan. Did the CT Scan, and their guess is possible IBS, so they want me to adjust diet and see if I feel better.
Don’t get me wrong, I love my doctors these days. But the confines of western medicine limit them greatly. I am down to try a new diet, it is not the first time a doctor has told me what to eat. But it would be nice to not play a guessing game-when by all accounts I am “doing it right” by going to the trusted professional. Look out for a future blog post regarding that.
Eastern Medicine:
So, running errands with my partners family-we end up in a chinese herb shop with an “in house” chinese doctor. He did a reading on my partner, updated his prescription of herbal tea and then did me. He spoke Cantonese, so my Mandarin speaking family translated to English to me.
I had a visit with a chinese doctor, Dr Tan at Wing Hip Fung in Monterey Park. Diagnosis: The doctor looked at my pulse on both hands and visually at my tongue. He said to eat less sweets, work out more, eat better, drink less cold drinks. I ran cold. My kidney is weak and leads to migraine and fertility issues. He picked up on the too much fluid in me. Also the dizziness from my chronic migraines. Also my blocked tubes, if I want to carry a kid I need to do a couple of months of meds. I was told to relax and be happy. I was given stuff to make a soup to eat after the start of my next cycle. I have been dealing with the pelvic/stomach issue with my family doctor and that has yet to discover a cause or cure. My pulse and tongue were read, and I was given a prescription for a soup base. I was seen by the doctor, my prescription was filled at the counter with traditional weight and my price determined with an abacus.
First of all, this guy did not know me from adam. And yet, nothing was wrong. I did not know about the kidneys, but in my head-I thought...shouldn’t the CT Scan or any other test caught that? While I am waiting on the timing to do the soup, I started drinking a Kidney Tea. While I do plan on trying the new diet per the western doctor, they both had something to say about diet. I don’t eat that bad, I do have a sweet tooth. But maybe keto isn’t best for my system, and how can my system be good to me if I am not giving it the right stuff?
Time will tell what works, and what doesn’t. Does the new diet make me feel better? Do I try and carry a kid again and it works? Do I have less symptoms from my chronic migraines on the day to day? Also, I share this to open up anyone elses mind to a secondary opinion from other parts of the world-and yet I wonder if there are bilingual chinese herbal doctors out there...Would you go see one if there was?

First on our journey is Khao Hom Mali 105, perhaps the most celebrated of Thailand's rice varieties. With its long, slender grains and an enchanting aroma reminiscent of pandan leaves, this jasmine rice isn't just a staple—it's a symbol of Thai heritage.
Khao Hom Mali 105 originated in Bang Khla District, Chachoengsao province in 1954. This variety was officially registered as Khao Dawk Mali 105 in 1959. Its delicate fragrance and soft texture when cooked make it the perfect companion to spicy curries and stir-fries.
.
2. Khao Hom Mali Thung Kula
Next, we venture to the vast plains of Thung Kula Rong Hai, spanning over 2 million rai (aroung 0.79 acres) across five provinces: Surin, Roi Et, Sisaket, Yasothon, and Maha Sarakham where Khao Hom Mali Thung Kula rice is grown. A premium jasmine rice variety celebrated for its exceptional fragrance and quality. Originally, the Thung Kula Rong Hai plain was arid. However, through land development efforts by government and other organizations, the area has become fertile again and is now a major producer of Khao Hom Mali Thung Kula.
When cooked, the rice is soft, fluffy, and exudes a natural sweetness. This variety has even earned Geographical Indication (GI) status, marking it as unique to this region.
.
3. Khao Sang Yod
Khao Sang Yod, originated from Phatthalung Province is a nutritious rice with long grains that range from white and red to dark red. Khao Sang Yod is renowned for its exceptionally high nutritional content. When cooked, the rice becomes chewy, exceptionally soft and maintains its tenderness even when cooled.

.
4. Khao Riceberry
Introducing Riceberry, a modern gem in Thailand's rice repertoire. This purple-hued rice is a crossbreed between Khao Hom Mali 105 and a local black rice (Khao Jao Hom Nil) variety, developed by the Rice Science Center at Kasetsart University.
With its slightly chewy texture and mild, nutty flavor, Riceberry is not only delicious but also a nutritional powerhouse—rich in antioxidants like anthocyanin, fiber, and essential vitamins. It's become a favorite among health enthusiasts and gourmet chefs alike.
Did you know that the deep purple color of Riceberry comes from its high anthocyanin content, the same antioxidant found in blueberries.

5. Khao Mun Poo
Khao Mun Poo, also known as Thai red rice, named for its distinctive reddish-orange hue that resembles the color of crab fat—'Mun Poo' translates to 'crab fat' in Thai. This rice offers a soft, slightly sticky texture when cooked, with a subtle earthy flavor.
Khao Mun Poo is cherished for both its taste and health benefits. The distinctive orange-red hue is attributed to its high levels of carotenoids, which are antioxidants that play a vital role in maintaining optimal eye health.

6. Khao Jek Chuey Sao Hai
As we continue our journey, we arrive in the Sao Hai district of Saraburi province, home to Khao Jek Chuey Sao Hai, a rice variety steeped in legend and tradition. With long, firm grains and a distinctive taste, this rice is less sticky than typical Thai varieties, making it perfect for fried rice and dishes where separate grains are desired. Historically, this rice was favored by Chinese traders.
Khao Jek Chuey Sao Hai also earned Geographical Indication (GI) status.

3 Popular Thai Sticky Rice Varieties
1. Khao Niao Kor Khor 6
Venturing into the realm of sticky rice, we first encounter Khao Niao Kor Khor 6 (RD6). Developed by Thailand's Rice Department (hence the 'Kor Khor'), this variety features short, plump grains that become wonderfully sticky when cooked. Its exceptional stickiness makes it ideal for forming into balls to dip into dishes like som tum or Nam Jim Jaew (Thai BBQ dipping sauce).
.
2. Khao Niao Dam
Khao Niao Dam, or black sticky rice, an eye-catching grain with a deep purple-black hue. When cooked, it transforms into a glossy, sticky delight with a slightly sweet and nutty flavor. Rich in antioxidants, particularly anthocyanins, this rice is as nutritious as it is delicious. It's often used in Thai desserts like black sticky rice pudding or combined with coconut milk for a luscious treat.
.
3. Khao Niao Khiaw Ngu
Lastly, we explore Khao Niao Khiaw Ngu, intriguingly named 'snake fang glutinous rice' due to its slender, pointed grains. This variety offers a delicate aroma and is slightly less sticky than other glutinous rice types, resulting in a soft, chewy texture when cooked. It's ideal for dishes that require a balance between stickiness and grain separation, like certain traditional sweets or for making steamed sticky rice, a key ingredient in the renowned mango sticky rice. Cultivated mainly in northern Thailand, this rice carries cultural significance in local ceremonies.
.
As we've journeyed through the rich tapestry of Thai rice varieties, it's clear that these grains are more than just food—they're the embodiment of Thailand's culture. Some are newly developed from the wisdom of the Thai people, adapting to meet the demands of modern consumption trends.
From the fragrant fields of Khao Hom Mali to the vibrant hues of Khao Riceberry, each variety tells a story of the land and its people. So next time you savor a Thai dish, remember that the humble rice at its heart carries generations of tradition and flavor, answering the question of what truly makes Thai cuisine so enchanting.
