Language, Thought, and Reality: The Interplay of Human Understanding
Language is more than a mere tool for communication; it's a fundamental element of human cognition that significantly shapes our perception of reality. The intricate relationship between language, thought, and reality has intrigued philosophers, linguists, and cognitive scientists for centuries. This intricate interplay not only influences how we express our ideas but also defines the very nature of our thoughts and, by extension, the way we perceive the world.
Language as a Lens to Reality
One of the most influential ideas in this realm is the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, which posits that the structure and vocabulary of a language can mold and constrain the way its speakers think about the world. This concept comes in two flavors: linguistic determinism and linguistic relativism. Linguistic determinism suggests that language entirely determines the way we think, limiting our thoughts to what is expressible in our language. Linguistic relativism, on the other hand, holds that language influences thought but doesn't strictly determine it.
Consider, for instance, the linguistic distinction between colors. Languages vary in how they categorize and label colors. Some have more words for different shades of blue, while others may combine colors that speakers of different languages consider distinct. This variation can affect how people perceive and categorize colors. If a language doesn't have a distinct word for a certain shade, its speakers may be less likely to perceive it as a separate entity. Apocalypse is about —
No, scratch that. No genre is ever about any one thing in particular, not when it’s a broad and varied genre made by many people with many different thematic concerns.
The thing that is most resonant and most meaningful in apocalyptic fiction to me in particular is the revelation of the world as constructed somewhat arbitrarily. Like a lot of the things we treat as important are rendered utterly meaningless in apocalyptic scenarios. All the systems and bureaucracies and constructs that make up our life fall away and in so doing are revealed as the absurdities that they are.
To be clear this is not a “the apocalypse purifies” reading or a “only real men survive the apocalypse” one. I’m saying that apocalypse works much like many other science fiction scenarios, in that it presents a strange world so that the reader can reflect back on the world around them. The post apocalyptic world is the same as the alien world, a place where many of the things taken for granted are no longer true and the characters and readers are forced to reevaluate what actually matters.
The difference, for me, is that post-apocalyptic fiction doesn’t just say, “The world doesn’t have to follow these arbitrary rules.” It says, “The world that followed these arbitrary rules is gone. All of that has been completely destroyed.” The characters in apocalyptic fiction have to grapple with this themselves. Instead of a mere comparison, it’s a comparison accompanied by a pervasive sense of loss.
The ghosts of the past are all around you, present in the physical structures of the old world, representing an organization that you thought was how the world worked. Now you know that all along, your entire society was fragile and able to be destroyed, that the iron-clad laws you lived by were simply made up by the force of collective societal belief. And you have to figure out how to live in the aftermath of the loss of that belief.

I just saw a post talking about how mbti is basically astrology and your personality isnt determined by an online test and whatever and just generally dissing mbti and i dont really care enough to engage with *that* post but you guys do know that the tests dont determine your type, right? There is no official test, all the tests are just made by random people who wanted to try their hand at making a test, but you need to only take them as seriously as youd take a uquiz or idrlabs at best. Of course you get different results taking different quizzes or taking them at different times, they arent authoritative. A quiz on this never could be authoritative, its a self-identity only. Its like if you took several “am i gay?” quizzes and kept getting different answers so you decided that sexuality as a whole concept is bogus. If you wanna know your type you just need to familiarize yourself with the terms and figure it out yourself. Which is completely optional! Knowing your type isnt compulsory and not everyone even fits the framework. But theres a difference between saying “im not really gay, straight, or bi, and i dont care to find a label” and “people that label their sexuality are a bunch of lunatics”
The other thing i wanna say is that everyone has all of the cognitive functions. Whether your acronym says N or S you definitely have both sensing and intuition, everyone has everything, thats super baked into the theory. The question is just which one you tend to favor when you have a choice. That being the case, that everyone has and uses everything, all the stereotypes and horoscopes and whatever else youre seeing on pinterest and instagram are 100% false and baseless and not how its intended to be used. People can have different types and behave the same. People can have the same types and behave differently. Because contrary to the advertising done by one particular 3rd party test maker, there arent 16 personalities, there isnt a finite number of personalities, there isnt even a finite number of *factors* to a personality, mbti isnt a comprehensive statement about how you are as a person, all it addresses is what type of information you tend to find more interesting or valuable in certain types of situations. Thats it. It doesnt actually even addresses how much social interaction you need, introversion and extroversion in the conventional sense arent what the E and I stand for
Its a useful tool to understand your own thought patterns if you WANT IT. And if it happens to work for you. The four of us decided to use it in place of system roles because it feels to us like a more humanizing way to understand our relationship with our each other. And yet even though we’ve chosen to make this a huge part of our identities, one of us (out of four) doesnt even fit the framework. But despite not having a type that technically exists, its still helpful for us to understand how he prefers to operate in mbti terms, cuz theres not really any other vocabulary to talk about this
The people who are coercing you to have, know, and identify with a type are the problem (especially if theyre basing any sort of opinion or expectation of you on it). The availability of the terminology for people who want to use it for themselves isnt the problem

iirc my college has more than 3000 students and ive never seen anyone else wearing an n95 before. ive seen kn95s, a few kf94s, a few cloth masks, and several blue surgical masks, but never another n95 wearer. out of thousands of people. im always the only person wearing a mask in any of my classes. and my school is definitely more liberal and my social circle specifically is very leftist, and still barely anyone masks. i really dont understand why people arent at least a little more willing to do anything at all about the mass disabling virus everyone’s ignoring. the cognitive dissonance has got to be insane
remember the brief period at the beginning of the pandemic when, like, democrats and anyone further left than them near-universally saw not masking as embarrassing and anti-science. i miss that.
