An excerpt from the trial of Elinor Crane, who was arrested in Middlesex in 1693 on suspicion of burglary. A witness claimed one of the burglars was a woman in men's clothing, and Elinor had previously been seen in the area dressed as a man.

"But the Court asking her why she went in Mans Apparel, the Prisoner replyed, She went to Wooe a Widow. Upon the whole Matter the Jury brought her in not Guilty."

On July 4, 1914 - An explosion demolished the upper stories of an apartment building in East Harlem, killing anarchist Arthur Caron and several colleagues. Caron had been among those who protested the involvement of the Rockefeller family in April's "Ludlow Massacre." It appeared that Caron and his associates were building the bomb meant to kill John D. Rockefeller Jr., when it exploded.

(The Ludlow Massacre occurred April 20, 1914, when Colorado state troops and a private force hired by a Rockefeller-owned coal mining company attacked and destroyed a tent camp of striking miners and their families.)

An official report stated that at least twenty-five people - including fourteen children and two women - perished in the massacre. Earlier reporting put the death toll at a minimum of forty-five people, with women and children accounting for thirty of those deaths.

it’s interesting to stumble upon real Victorian murderesses who seem like they may have informed the character of Lucille Sharpe. four immediately come to mind:

- Constance Kent, who killed her young half-brother in 1860, at the age of 16 (apparent motive jealousy for preferential treatment by her parents). she was sent to boarding school in France- a real boarding school, as far as I know, not an asylum -when the investigation fell apart due to her family’s relatively high social status. she turned herself in five years later, though, and served a 20-year prison sentence

- Jane Toppan, a nurse convicted in 1901 of murdering at least 12 patients (though she confessed to 31 killings) with morphine overdoses, apparently for the sexual thrill it gave her

- Belle Gunness, a black widow killer who had a background in butchering animals (that’s the only real similarity here- she faked her own death in 1908 by placing the body of a woman she’d killed in her house and burning it down with her children inside. hardly the Child Escaping Abuse/Woman Killing To Support Her Lover type)

- Lizzie Borden, of course; the quintessential Victorian Patricide Case (may have murdered her father and stepmother with a hatchet, possibly over an inheritance dispute and said father killing her pet doves)

of course, for a fictional sympathetic antagonist, the motives have to have been somewhat nobler (at least at the start). but I do wonder if Del Toro borrowed bits from these women’s stories in creating the character

Arrested for “mayhem” in 1907 Bertha Boronda (also known as the original Lorena Bobbitt) cut off her husbands penis with a razor after he repeatedly cheated on her.

On the day of the assault Frank (the husband) had come home after weeks away with another woman and demanded sex with Bertha, Bertha’s response to this was to cut off franks penis with his own flat razor and then flee the scene disguised in an old suit belonging to her brother, Bertha successfully evaded police for some time (some sources say it was a few house and others say it was till the next day) before being arrested. While in police custody Bertha said she couldn’t remember what she’d done to Frank as she had “blacked out” after asking him if he loved her and his response was to ask her for sex. Bertha was the second with of Frank and the first wife of Frank had attempted to end her life by drinking Chloroform, when asked why she had tried to do this her response was that it was down to the franks abuse. Bertha was 31yrs old at the time of the assault and was sentenced to five years in jail a year later in 1908, after serving her sentence Bertha went on to remarry without having another violent incident.

As well as the incident with her first wife, Frank was accused of voter fraud and was a known cheater. It was written in articles at the time that he’d probably die from what Bertha had done but I couldn’t find for sure if he did.

Some sources said that the name of Franks first wife was Serena and that they married around Christmas time in 1890, it is said that her attempt was around three years later and then they were granted a divorce in 1895 but I can’t confirm any of that for definite.

On This Day in New York City History March 1, 1912: NYPD Jail Matron Isabella Goodwin (February 20, 1865 - October 26, 1943) becomes the first female detective on the force.

She joined the police force in the late 1890's serving as a jail matron, a position that had her looking after female and children prisoners. In the course of her employment, Goodwin would go undercover from time to time to investigate crimes and gain access to locations such as women only gambling dens where male police officers could not enter. It was while undercover that her big break came.

In 1912, there was a robbery where $25,000 (roughly $770,000 in today's dollars) was stolen. One of the suspects was believed to frequent a boardinghouse for relations with one of its tenants. Goodwin went undercover as a scrubwoman at the boardinghouse. She did so until she gained enough evidence to have the suspect arrested and the case was solved.

For her actions, Goodwin was appointed as New York's first female detective and given the rank of 1st grade lieutenant. By the 1920's Detective Goodwin would oversee the  Women’s Bureau that was tasked with investigating cases involving prostitutes, runaways, truants and victims of domestic violence. She would retire in 1924.

As of 2019, 6,570 women were working in New York City’s 36,500-member police force (18 percent) including 781 detectives, 753 sergeants and 200 lieutenants.

Goodwin would pass away on October 26, 1943 and is buried in Green-Wood Cemetary in Brooklyn.

"Doris Day may have saved her only child, record producer Terry Melcher, from being killed by Charles Manson. Doris made Terry move out of his home in Benedict Canyon months before Manson's followers killed Sharon Tate & four others there in 1969. Dennis Wilson introduced many of his circle to Manson. The leader of the 'Manson Family' was heading out to clubs with Terry & Dennis. Manson was also in the car one day when Dennis dropped Terry off at his home at 10050 Cielo Drive, at the top of a steep hill in the Benedict Canyon area.

Terry was living at the house with girlfriend, Candice Bergen. Manson wanted to be a rock star & in 1968 the Beach Boys recorded one of his songs, "Cease to Exist," as a single without crediting Manson. Terry started visiting him at his ranch but Terry "made it clear" he didn't think Manson had talent & wouldn't help launch his career. Manson wouldn't stand for it. Manson decided his first victims would be the occupants of the luxury French country-style home at 10050 Cielo Drive but Terry had moved in January 1969 to a home owned by his mother. The move was no accident; Terry was extremely close to his mom. "He had told her about Manson & about some of his scary antics, his brandishing of knives, his followers, & that Manson had been to the house on Cielo.When the property was vacated, Sharon & Roman moved in. On August 9, 1969, Manson followers murdered Sharon and her unborn son Paul & three friends & a student visiting the caretaker of the property. According to Susan Atkins, Manson sent his killers to Cielo Drive "to instill fear" into Terry because he felt he had broken a promise to record his music. Terry and Candice got the message and went underground. Terry & Candice begged people not to tell Manson they had moved. The next year, prosecutors arranged for Terry & Candice to testify about their Manson connection. Terry hired 24-hour security & took sedatives to take the stand. Candice reportedly said to Terry: "It could have been me," to which he replied: "It could have been us."

I know we live in a very different world now, but I find it concerning how the newspapers printed all these kids' addresses. Did any harm ever come from that, to your knowledge?

I feel like the concept of your address being private information is a very modern one. Any news story until the mid-20th century (and much later in small towns/rural areas) would include the addresses of the individuals involved. Even the smallest towns printed yearly city directories that listed everyone's current address and occupation. So I can't imagine anyone would hesitate to publish a child's address, as why bother concealing what was already considered public information?

Furthermore, the concept of stranger kidnapping - and 'stranger danger' in general - was not something that really entered the public consciousness in the US until the 1920s, and even then the vast majority of kidnappings were for ransom. It was something that happened to rich people, usually in big cities.

It wasn't until several extremely high profile kidnappings of children in the late 20s/early 30s (namely Marion Parker, Walter Collins and Charles Lindbergh Jr.) that the concept of a stranger taking your child would probably have even crossed the mind of the average parent.

Additionally it's important to understand that the role of small town newspapers (where most of the Dear Santa letters are from) was something closer to Facebook or the Nextdoor app than a source of important news. Going on a trip? It's in the newspaper. Having a small dinner party? That's getting reported, along with the guest list, menu, party favors and any decorations you put up. Your child built a particularly nice snowman? There's a reporter here and entire town will know before dinner time.

So is it possible that some burglar used a Dear Santa letter to target the home of a wealthy child sometime in the 1890s? Sure? But I can't see why in an era where if you wanted to know where someone lived you could stop any random person on the street and say "Hey, where do the Johnsons live?" and no one would hesitate to tell you.

August 9, 1969: Manson “Family” members Susan Atkins, Tex Watson, and Patricia Krenwinkel entered the home of Hollywood actress Sharon Tate and murdered her and four others. Linda Kasabian (née Drouin) was also present, but allegedly did not take part. Steven Earl Parent, who was present at the address only by unfortunate coincidence, lost his life that night, in addition to Sharon Tate and her houseguests, Jay Sebring, Abigail Folger, and Wojciech Frykowski. In an earlier incident involving Charles Manson and his followers, musician Gary Hinman was murdered after being held captive for several days, forced to turn over his property to his captors under torture and threat of death. Manson associate Robert “Bobby” Beausoleil killed Gary Hinman on the orders of Manson.

After demanding money that Hinman did not have, Manson told them via phone to hold Hinman captive there at his house. When Manson arrived, armed with a bayonet, he struck Hinman, severely cutting his face and ear. Gary Hinman was held captive for three more days before being murdered by Bobby Beausoleil, on the instruction Charles Manson.

Above: After a well-documented investigation and trial, the principal participants in the Manson “Family” murders were found guilty and sentenced to death. Bobby Beausoleil was convicted and sentenced to death for the July 27, 1969, fatal stabbing of Gary Hinman. Beausoleil, Manson, and the other participants who were sentenced to death were later granted commutation to a lesser sentence of life imprisonment, after the Supreme Court of California issued a ruling that invalidated all death sentences issued in California prior to 1972. Bobby Beausoleil is currently imprisoned in California. Manson died in prison in California in 2017. Linda Drouin Kasabian, who gave a handful of interviews about her participation in the 1969 murders, kept a low profile over the years and died in Tacoma, Washington on January 21, 2023, at the age of 73.

The Italian restaurant in my mom’s hometown WAS definitely a mob front. The owner briefly served in the Italian military, immigrated to America in his twenties back in the early 70s, mysteriously had enough money to open a chain of Italian restaurants and was convicted for trafficking cocaine across the Virginia/West Virginia area and spent 15 years in prison.

My mom had worked as a waitress at the place while she was a teenager and throughout her 20s and she realized that when she was sent to the restaurant’s sister location in West Virginia in a mysteriously packed car by her mysteriously nice boss, it probably wasn’t pizza ingredients she was hauling. It was the 80s. She was a tiny, very naive, conventionally attractive church girl with no criminal record so she was the perfect unwitting drug mule.

The thing was, this restaurant and the man who operated it were locally loved. Beyond large scale organized cocaine trafficking, food was his other passion. Everyone waited anxiously for him to get out of prison and when he did this guy started a crusade against the corrupt local sheriff’s office. He started doing anti-police brutality advocacy work WHOLEHEARTEDLY. Donating to local families who had been victims and participating in local drives and awareness campaigns.

Made men usually do local charity work but the balls on this guy to take up sword and spear against shitty corrupt ineffectual law enforcement. Incredible. One thing about Appalachians is that we hate the cops and we love social agitators. This guy lived a long eventful life and died recently of natural causes and the overwhelming outpouring of love for him on Facebook was incredible, a uniting force that the town had not seen in decades, everybody was sharing their favorite stories about him and I’m sure local law enforcement was fuming.
