The Exotic Animal Photo Reference Repository is live!

You can find it at: https://www.animal-photo-references.com!

Here's how this repository works: all photos were taken by me, a human, at zoos, aquariums, sanctuaries, and other facilities with animals in human care. There is no AI involved in the photo editing or creation and there never will be. Right now there's 56 species on the site; my catalog has over 300 and I will be uploading the rest of them as fast as I can.

Artists creating derivative or transformative works (without AI) have blanket permission to use these references. Yes, even for work you're going to sell.

All other usage/reproduction requires permission, but assume I'm friendly and please do ask! That's educators, researchers, the media, people who need images for a school presentation, etc. This is just to retain copyright/control in case they're scraped/reused unethically - it doesn't meant I don't want folk to have access! So please do reach out via the contact form on the repository website, I don't bite and I'm most likely going to say yes.

Please don't repost the repository photos to your own blogs: I've created @animalphotorefs as a dedicated blog to share photos from the site, and of course I'll reblog a lot of it here! That again just helps with retaining copyright and sourcing of the images. If you really want to repost some for a specific purpose, please just ask me first!

Also, folks, this project has no funding. It's just me and my camera.

There will never be a paywall on the site - I believe resources like this absolutely must be free for everyone to access. So please, please, please support the repository if you use it. Want sneak peeks at photos, cute videos I take, or to help choose what I photograph and what gets posted first? You can do that through Patreon (and there's a free trial on the most interactive tier!) If you'd like to just drop a tip, I've also set up a Ko-Fi.

Help challenge the UK ban on puberty blockers

One day before the UK parliament was dissolved on 30 May 2024, the health secretary Victoria Atkins introduced an immediate ban for trans young people using puberty blockers.

Possession of puberty blockers for trans children is now punishable by up to two years in prison in the UK. Puberty blockers for cisgender children remains legal.

The timing of this act was careful and deliberate. As parliament was dissolved the next day, there are now no working MPs in the UK, meaning that citizens have no way to challenge the ban.

The Good Law Project is running a crowdfunder to challenge it in court. They have about £2,000 of £75,000 needed. Please support it if you can, in any way that works for you.

As many of you may know, over the past month I have been running a KICKSTARTER campaign to produce physical copies of a 130+ page comic anthology that has been three years in the making between me and a handful of peers.

As we enter the final week of the campaign, we still have a little less that $1000 left to reach our goal— any support in this moment, either directly to the campaign or helping us share the word is extremely appreciated!

Ok so I just discovered that there isn't a tumblr presence for Lunaiira so I'm putting myself in charge of informing tumblr about this. I am in no way officially affiliated with the project, just really excited.

Lunaiira is a high fantasy musical audio-drama with all original music. It's planned to be eight episodes released for free so if you see this post way in the future it's likely available for you to go and binge right now!

However if you see this post now, then you should know the project is currently looking for backers on kickstarter! To quote their kickstarter page, the story is: "about power, love, and rebirth — featuring powerful femmes and folx of color, queer romance, and finding purpose in the face of oppressive systems."

The musical was written by two WoC and features a stacked cast of iconic voice actors (who are all being appropriately compensated btw bc ethical art matters). Voices you might recognise include: Benjamin Callins (The Dragon Prince), Brandon McInnis (EPIC, My Hero Academia & Demon Slayer) as well as Cristina Vee (Miraculous Ladybug).

There's only one week left on my kickstarter for FOUR books!!!

I really pushed a lot of boundaries on the page layouts and presentation of these books, they're all GORGEOUS and I am SO proud of every single one!

Each book is self contained and 125-175 pages, so you can pick whichever sounds most exciting to you if you're not ready to jump into all four right off the bat!

Pirates, Summer Camp, Ghost Hunting, and Victorian Vampire Hunters!

But, the main charaters do also have a developing romance over the course of the series!

it has been a TON of work to edit these into books and fix up some of the art and writing, but I promise I could not be happier with the work I've done!

Gay time traveling vampires solving supernatural mysteries. what's not to love! ONE WEEK LEFT!!! BACK IT NOW!!!!!!!!!! or don't it's ok but IF YOU WANT THEM!!!! time is running out!

Alan Mandel is a voice actor, director, and producer best known for his work on the critically acclaimed sci-fi podcast Red Valley, where he plays Gordon Porlock as well as directing and producing the show. Hey, folks! My company, Cotton Candy Flavor Media, and I are currently working on our first ever animated film. It’s called “Get Yeast To It”, and it’s a surreal existential dark comedy about a version of the afterlife where humans are judged by cells of yeast based on whether or not they ever ate bread. We’re currently running a crowdfunding campaign for the project so that we can raise the money we need to achieve our yeasty dreams, which is no small feat for indie artists in the midst of this truly shitty time for the animation industry as a whole. Ryan's in court against THE ENTIRE UK GOVERNMENT, fighting for the accurate records and documents to which they are already entitled under UK law!

They've got a good case and good lawyers, and if they win it could change EVERYTHING for nonbinary people in the UK. I cannot express how grateful I am that they're using their nerves of steel for this cause that is very important to me.

people are so weird about creative works being made for profit. "this is a cash grab" "this is fan service" damn you're telling me that a product was made because someone thought there was a potential market for it? you're saying that this soulless vampire of a creator thought "I could make something people will like and then earn money by selling it to them"? you have said nothing about the actual quality of the work or the conditions under which it was made. it sounds like you're trying to imply that this work was rushed into production and made in a way that exploited people, or that the quality is bad because it's trying to appeal to the lowest common denominator, but you haven't actually said either of those things. are either of those true or are you just mad because you have strange notions about creators owing you Pure Art and you've decided to redirect your rage at billionaires for hoarding wealth to random moderately successful artists.
