The proportions stretch naturalism in humans but works SO WELL for a story about shapeshifters. I mean it completely seriously when I say I can't imagine anyone else drawing telepathic shapeshifting martian sex, because he made it look so compelling

Rq who is nika? Had some art tagged daminika cross my dash and I am Intrigued

Nika alias Flatline, a character created by writer Joshua Williamson and artist Gleb Melnikov, was introduced in Robin(2021) run—where Damian Wayne as the fifth Robin running off home attended the Death tournament on Lazarus Island.

Nika is the first opponent Damian faces on the island and she proceeds to take his first life with her signature move— ripping his heart out with her bare hand (no one actually dies, people would have three lives during the tournament on the island).

She is a Russian metahuman girl and a martial arts fighter, with the power to absorb the skills of people who had died in her hands.

Persona martial artists in a Mortal Kombat game night tournament

(In a hypothetical Persona Q3 type scenario)

Akihiko: Has never played before but picks it up surprisingly quick, becomes a Jax main at first sight and goes on a whole tangent about how cool it would be to box with metal arms and that he needs to ask Aigis if she wants to learn. Gives commentary on the accuracy of the fighting moves as he plays, but the stuff he says is so interesting that no one finds it annoying.

Chie: Has put enough time in that she’s pretty decent, picks any ninja character and gets so into matches that she starts shouting. Will 100% break a controller if she gets angry, but she does it by dramatically tossing the controller in the air and roundhouse kicking it. Also loves playing/reacting to the story modes because of the insane martial arts in the cutscenes. Her favorite game is Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe because she gets to play as Batman and yell “I am the night” when she beats someone.

Lisa: Makes a point to play as every character and not pick a favorite, so there’s about a 50/50 chance she’ll either lose spectacularly or win both rounds in under forty seconds. She’s the biggest fan of the classic arcade-era MK but has a special love for MK11 specifically because of the Cassie Cage fatality where she kicks your spine out of your body. Gets so excited when she wins a tough match that she gets up and starts dancing.

Makoto: Has poured upwards of a hundred hours into the series specifically because Futaba kept kicking her ass on Phantom Thieves game nights, is proficient with pretty much every character in every game from the modern MK era. Rolls her eyes at the idea of playing a fighting game when they could all just fight for real, but gets VERY into it if anyone starts talking shit or a match gets intense. She’s also the one that brings snacks because she’s a good mom friend.

Ulala: Usually the one who’s shit-talking Makoto, also frequently thirsts over the characters. Will challenge anyone who beats her to a fistfight in real life. Despite this, she’s actually a great person to have in game nights because she gets so excited about playing that her energy becomes infectious, even more than Chie. She’s the one that can be at the tiniest bit of health and suddenly turn a match around, which always gets everyone else screaming like Americans watching the Super Bowl.

Alright, after putting it off for a bit (due to real life being busy and also I got lazy), I’ve finally gone through and prepared the list of ships for the tournament! Congrats to the lucky 64, and apologies to anyone else whose ship didn’t make it in. I did appreciate every single entry that followed the rules, though, and all the infodumps made me smile!

Before the list, however, I wanna say that this post and the eventual bracket matchup post are going to double as places to post your propaganda via replies and reblogs (or even asks). Going forward, I will use whatever propaganda people add to the posts/send via asks with permission to add as propaganda on the eventual bracket matches. By adding any sort of replies/tags/etc to any further tournament-related posts, you are consenting to having that propaganda added into the tournament. If you are uncomfortable with this, please state it outright on any posts/asks you might send.

Comic artists are unabashedly horny on main and usually that’s channeled into really unholy female anatomy but people who draw Dick Grayson obviously yearn to even the scales and we love feminist praxis and equality in this house 🥳. No matter what Nightwing comic it is he is slutted the hell up, he is yassified 💅🏽, he is ✨snatched✨. I don’t think there’s been a single artist for him that’s been normal about his ass and there never SHOULD be. There is a love, nay an OBSESSION, evident in the painstaking rendering those gloriously toned cheeks receive no matter the medium. It’s just become canon at this point that he has the best ass in Gotham, heroes recognize it, villains recognize it, the audience recognizes it! how do you feel about dami’s robin 2021 run?

i have a lot of thoughts let's all sit down. this is gonna be a random dump instead of anything really organised I'm just gonna say shit off the top of my head:

It's not my favourite damian run, that's definitely still robin: son of batman in every way shape and form but oh my god is it freeing having a damian story that's pushing him away from his rebirth characterization.

it does still have its issues i still don't like the al ghuls being terrorists at all

i don't like slade as a character let alone as a SYMPATHETIC ANTIHERO and a lot of this story centers around him but i guess someone else might enjoy that but not really me, but i guess that's because it had to finish of the...teen titans story line...that everyone loved and cared for. (SARCASM)

i did not care much for the characters in the Lazarus tournament on the first read which made my enjoyment a bit perturbed. it took a second read for me to slowly gaf abt them

also batman vs robin and the lazarus rain events were nearly objectively snoozefests for Damian

not fully related but i also dislike how his skin tone gets lighter at a random point in the story for some reason??? the artist also drew him darker in their own personal art of Damian...which...is definitely...giving me odd feeling about DCs editorial.

but overall I'm glad that it's more of a pre rebirth damian and not anything like his dcau variant.

I'm excited for what the writer has in a story that is more focused on Damian and not a large ensemble of characters since i feel they had to tone him down to give the other characters more of a spotlight.

i also like that they made him a shoujo fan.

the story had entertaining segments even if i didn't like the characters aside from Damian at first, it still kept me entertained.

OH and i like talia coming back from before her 2004 "Death and the maidens" character assassination arc slightly and being a LITTLE more true to heart to her original.

she is a good mother in the way Bruce is a good father and i like that they had her be genuinely nice to Damian, that's what she ALWAYS should've been (REBIRTH SUCKED. SHE SHOULD'VE BEEN NICE AFTER RSOB.)

i also liked the ra's design. that shit ROCKED and I'm sad they got rid of it later.

also giving Damian more friends was nice, maybe one day it'll make Damian fans escape the "he has no friends except jon and his pets" notion. hopefully.

Happy that Goliath came back and i also heard that maya was planned to be there in the story before it was split into multiple comics so HOPEFULLY she comes back in batman and robin (maybe even with suren if I'm hopeful)

At first... Moving to Boston was a great decision for Tobias. He loved the city, and while his family's legacy was still known by many, it was far enough from his hometown of DC that it did not overshadow him. Many had no idea who the Carricks were, and he liked it that way.

He was still a little "shell shocked" after his final year at Hopkins, so at first, he threw himself into his work. He was determined to make a name for himself and still figuring out what his new life would look like.

At the time, the only family member he hadn't managed to alienate himself from was his mother. In many ways, he wanted to gain her approval. Professionally, he was doing that with ease, but personally, he wanted to show her he was the man she thought he could be... to an extent.

Personal Life... When Tobias was a 2nd-year resident at Kenmore, he began dating Sasha Carlson (Info here and here). She had just finished her master's degree and was new to Boston, working in the hospital's communications department. They dated for one year, and this was the only serious relationship of his adult life (prior to Casey). She wanted a future, and Tobias couldn't get on board. He cared for her, but she loved him. When they broke up, Tobias committed to bachelorhood. He really liked Sasha. She checked all the boxes, and he was convinced if he couldn't make it work with her, it was because he wasn't meant to live that life. Plus... he hated hurting her. While not friendly in the immediate aftermath of their break up, in time, they became very good friends.

After Sasha, Tobias became much more social. He was a regular at the local bar, known at many of the "in" spots in the city. He was on Kenmore's softball and bowling teams and participated in charity soccer and basketball tournaments. He learned to golf for "business purposes" but found it dull. He also took an interest in the arts (something his mother was thrilled about) and became a collector. That influenced his decision to buy a townhome in Boston's South End, a diverse, artistic community. People questioned him buying a large (4-bedroom) home when they knew he had planned to be a bachelor for life. He said it was an investment, he liked extra space, and it afforded him more opportunities to show off the art he acquired. Plus, he enjoyed entertaining on occasion.

After Sasha, Tobias never settled down. He dated many (many) women. There were some one-night stands but more casual dating. He was always very upfront that he did not want a commitment, but many thought they could "change his mind", then painted him as the bad guy when they couldn't. Between this, a crazy schedule, and just getting older, he came to prefer "arrangments". Not so much "friends with benefits" because they weren't really tight friends, but women who wanted the same thing he did... no strings... just fun. They weren't committed to each other but tended to limit dating/sexual activity to each other until one (usually the woman) wanted to move on to something new/more.

The only significant arrangements in the storyline were Audrey (more here), a nurse at Kenmore who he shared a long-time dalliance with. This proved to be a thorn in his side at the beginning of his relationship with Casey. Also, June Hirata, while not longstanding or significant to him personally, was significant in regard to his early relationship with Casey (more here).

Tobias had tons of friends, but the only two he was very close with were Kerry and Sasha.

Professional life... Tobias's star continued to rise, and he made a name for himself. His research in structural biology and metabolism was the crux of his publishing, but in practice, he found he preferred working in trauma. It was something about the need to make quick decisions, the rush of not knowing what was coming next, and the ability to utilize his knowledge to immediately impact/save lives that drew him in.

He held several different positions during his time at Kenmore, the last title he healed there was Director of Emergency Medicine. This is the position he was working in when he met Casey & Aurora. He also taught at Tufts University Medical School earlier in his career, eventually moving o to teach at Harvard Medical School.

He was very driven, and his career was the most important part of his life. While he was affable and known for having fun, on and off the job, that went away when he was in "work mode." Then he was no-nonsense. He encouraged younger physicians to have fun at work but know the time and place.

Personality/Reputation: Tobias was generally well-liked. He was charming, funny, affable, and liked to make people feel appreciated. However, he was also arrogant and could be shallow. The only deeper relationships he had were with the few people he allowed to see the "real" Tobias; in general, he kept things on the surface.

Those with a "work should also be fun" approach held him in the highest esteem at Kenmore, those who were more traditional doctors did not. He had a reputation of being a playboy/lady's man (which he didn't mind), but also a heartbreaker and a cad (which he did mind). The latter pissed him off because he wasn't a kid anymore. He was always upfront with what he wanted and knew it wasn't on him if people chose not to hear what he said. But, in time, he learned not to care what people thought. He knew the truth and that was all that mattered to him.

Imagine Nika meeting Alfred for the first time (because screw canon, he's alive).

Yes Nika will find a way to revive(?) both of Damian's grandfathers! (trust🙏)

In my head, I imagine Nika would be a bit intimidated by Alfred if he gets revived, cuz he is so well loved and respected by Damian and the batfamily.

She would recognize him from when he was the ghost that had lingered by Damian's side at the tournament. She would know how important Alfred is to Damian and how Alfred's death had a big impact on him.

I hc Nika can feel the presenting energy of Alfred here but can't really see or hear him because Alfred chose to only reveal to Damian.

It's very unlikely to happen in the comic now… but I wish Nika's ghost grandfather would appear in the future! And see how much he has taken part in Nika's life before and after his death.( dc please I need to see Nika's childhood with her family… if she even still interacts with her ghost grandfather at all…)

I think it would be interesting if Nika's grandpa had interactions with Damian's two grandpas while they were dead and hadn't been revived yet(Nika will not be able to revive her own grandfather cuz he has been dead for years unlike Damian's are being dead in recent months). It’s just funny to me to imagine the grandpas gathering to discuss their own respective grandchildren's well-being.

Superboy Has Two Daddies

What Happened?

After the Death of Superman event was a big hit, DC Comics released four series, each focusing on different potential incarnation or successor to Big Blue. One of these series was Superboy, a new character and the first time that the primary user of the codename was not Clark Kent as a teen. This version was a totally radical 90s kid for the totally radical 90s, would later get Kryptonian name (Kon-El) and a human name (Conner Kent), and eventually discover that he was a human clone of Project Cadmus Director Paul Westfield with metahuman powers like "tactile telekinesis" to simulate Superman's abilities.

Before that revelation however, a fan letter was published in Superboy #26 suggesting that the character might be a clone of Superman's archenemy Lex Luthor. The author of that letter? One Geoffrey Johns, who would eventually become a comics writer himself and would make his fan theory canon by revealing in his run of Teen Titans that Conner was a half-Kryptonian/half-human hybrid created from the genetic material of Superman and Lex Luthor.

If this story doesn't seem totally unbelievable that's probably because it's become such a core part of the character's identity, to the point that whenever the Conner is adapted to other media, the Clex of it all inevitably follows - Young Justice, Titans, etc.

(Also, this doesn't touch on the initial New 52 version of the character, but "...and then the New 52 came along" feels like one massive "That Really Happened" at this point.)

Tag Team Tournament - Scoring Updates

Now, as anyone who played in the Tag Team Tournament in 2023 could tell you, some of our original scoring methods got pretty solidly exploited last year. What happened was that during our first year, we wanted to encourage artists to join the Tournament, which they did, and they were amazing! However, once we started getting more art, and more comics in particular, it became clear that our scores were broken.

So, after last year, we took some time to re-evaluate our scoring, and we made some changes to ensure that things were more fair and less susceptible to point grabbing. We also added a few new bonuses that we hope will help encourage creation and collaboration.

Those of you who read our Event Guide Document will already know about all of these changes, but just in case you missed it, or if you weren't sure which items changed from last year, all of our changes are below the cut.

Submission Scoring Changes

Visual Art:

Sketches will be awarded 5 points.

Line art will be awarded an additional 5 points, for a total of 10 points. 

Flat color will be awarded an additional 5 points, for a total of 15 points. 

Shading or rendering will be awarded an additional 5 points, for a total of 20 points. 

Visual Art must be clearly related to Maribat and to the characters on your team in order to be scored, and that connection must be able to stand on its own, even if it’s a companion piece to another Maribat work.

Comic: Visual Art score multiplied by two. This is a flat score, which will not be increased by adding panels. 

Incorrect Quote: 1 point

Headcanon: 3 points

Mood Board: 5 points

Note: All images included in a mood board must be sourced with permission of their original creators. Do not use other people’s art or photographs without their permission. If you use photographs, please check the license they were published under before using them. Comic panels or screenshots from DC or MLB can be used with sourcing.

Animated mood boards will earn 1 additional point.

Edit: 

Edits which are still flat images will earn 5 points.

Edits which use animated scenes will earn 10 points.

AMVs (animated music videos) will earn 15 points.

Bonus Point Changes

Prompt Bonus:

A prompt will be scheduled for every day throughout the event. If a creation fulfills the prompts on their assigned day (marked by 24 hour periods beginning and ending at midnight EST), it will be awarded 3 extra points. If it is used before or after the assigned day, it will earn 1 extra point. Prompts cannot be stacked for multiple bonuses until the final day of the tournament.

To fulfill a prompt, you must use the prompt phrase in your creation, have it make sense in the context of your creation, and the mods must be able to find it. 

You can add on to the phrase, either before or after, but if you want to add words within the phrase you may only break it up once. You may change certain aspects of the prompt to suit your creation: punctuation, pronouns, emphasis, plurality, and verb tense can all be changed. However, all words (or some form of them) must be used. 

If you are drawing, you may use the prompt in the description of your art instead of adding a speech bubble to the art itself, but it must be clearly tied into art itself as something the characters are saying or doing.

If your use of a prompt may not be immediately obvious, make sure to leave the mods a note about how to find it when you submit. (Ex: A poem where the first letter of each line spells out a prompt).

Teamwork Bonus:

Last year we noticed a lot of folks working together or creating based on what other players had made, and we loved seeing that! As such, we have a few new bonuses that you can earn when you work with others.

Companion Piece Bonus: If your creation is a companion to another Maribat work made by someone else, you will get 1 bonus point. If the other work is another submission for this year’s TTT, you will get 3 bonus points. Make sure that you add a link to the work that inspired you in your submission.

Collaborator Bonus: If you collaborate with another creator to make one submission, you will receive 5 bonus points. Make sure that both of your screen names are listed on the form when you submit.

Playlist Points:

This year, every team will have a playlist published on Spotify (and linked in the Teams section of this document). At the end of the event, our Mods will tally up the number of saves each playlist has. Every team except for whichever team is in first before these points are added will receive bonus points for every save. If the teams are tied, as happened in our 2022 Tournament, then all the tied teams will receive points for their saves. Our scores can get very close, so saving a team playlist could very well be the difference between first and second place.

Moderator’s Discretion:

Each mod has 35 points that can be awarded to submissions throughout the competition as a bonus. Each submission can only get a max of 5 extra points from a single mod.
