Launch Your Creativity with Space Crafts!
In honor of the completion of our Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope’s spacecraft — the vehicle that will maneuver the observatory to its place in space and enable it to function once there — we’re bringing you a space craft you can complete at home! Join us for a journey across the cosmos, starting right in your own pantry.
Stardust Slime
Ingredients:
1 5 oz. bottle clear glue
½ tablespoon baking soda
Food coloring
1 tablespoon contact lens solution
1 tablespoon glitter
Directions:
Pour the glue into a bowl.
Mix in the baking soda.
Add food coloring (we recommend blue, purple, black, or a combination).
Add contact lens solution and use your hands to work it through the slime. It will initially be very sticky! You can add a little extra contact lens solution to make it firmer and less goopy.
Add glitter a teaspoon at a time, using as much or as little as you like!
Did you know that most of your household ingredients are made of stardust? And so are you! Nearly every naturally occurring element was forged by living or dying stars.
Take the baking soda in this slime recipe, for example. It’s made up of sodium, hydrogen, carbon, and oxygen. The hydrogen was made during the big bang, right at the start of the universe. But the other three elements were created by dying stars. So when you show your friends your space-y slime, you can tell them it’s literally made of stardust!
Still feeling crafty? Try your hand at more pantry projects or these 3D and paper spacecraft models. If you’re eager for a more advanced space craft, check out these embroidery creations for inspiration! Or if you’re ready for a break, take a virtual tour of an interactive version of the Roman Space Telescope here.
Make sure to follow us on Tumblr for your regular dose of space!

OPT4048 - a "tri-stimulus" light sensor 🔴🟢🔵
We were chatting in the forums with someone when the OPT4048 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/texas-instruments/OPT4048DTSR/21298553) came up. It's an interesting light sensor that does color sensing but with diodes matched to the CIE XYZ color space. This would make them particularly good for color-light tuning. We made a cute breakout for this board. Fun fact: it's 3.3V power but 5V logic friendly.

I really wish more people on the left/blue side of things in the US would start verifying things before sharing. There is twisted information on both sides, and I'm seeing so many people doing the exact same thing we like to crucify the right for - sharing/reposting/amplifying something just because it alines with our beliefs/fears/narrative. Without fact checking or independent verification.
Search engines are free.
Idc how much you trust the source - even trusted, reliable sources can be wrong sometimes. Verify it for yourself.
I'm not saying they're necessarily willfully lying to us. There is so much information coming at all of us at such an incredible rate that it is easy to misunderstand, misinterpret, misread, take something out of context or simply get swept up in the emotion of it all and forget to fact check.
Also, we're only human. Those of us with a working moral compass, a heart and more than two functioning brain cells are quite rightly terrified/experiencing a rollercoaster of emotions. It is easy to get caught up in that to the point that it takes over. Stop. Take a deep breath. Back away from the social media and go look it up with a proper search engine. Sometimes you might be pleasantly surprised.
This entire situation is exhausting enough without repeated facepalms from seeing people I know and love on the left spreading misinformation simply because it is plausible and/or aligns with the narrative they want.

Wire Harness Testing
Wire harness testing is a critical step in ensuring the functionality, safety, and reliability of wire harnesses, which are used in various applications such as automotive, industrial, telecommunications, and consumer electronics. The testing process helps detect issues such as faulty connections, incorrect wiring, short circuits, and continuity problems. Proper testing ensures that the wire…

apologies for not being super active the past couple of months, work has been very very busy (and not so great) but! i'm almsot done and once im done with my thesis i'll be taking some much needed rest and will likely be using some of that resting time to write. that's all for now, thank you all again!!

DIY Laser Tripwire Security System Using Arduino
Tumblr media
The project consists of a laser module that continuously emits a beam aimed at a laser receiver sensor. When an object (such as a person) obstructs the laser, the receiver detects the interruption and triggers an alarm via a buzzer. This system is ideal for securing doorways, hallways, or any restricted area.
COMPONENTS REQUIRED
Arduino Uno
Laser LED Module
Laser Receiver Sensor Module
Buzzer
Jumper wires
Breadboard
Circuit Diagram
Tumblr media
CODE
#define LASER_PIN 7
#define RECEIVER_PIN 8
#define BUZZER_PIN 9
void setup() {
  pinMode(LASER_PIN, OUTPUT);
  pinMode(RECEIVER_PIN, INPUT);
  pinMode(BUZZER_PIN, OUTPUT);
  digitalWrite(LASER_PIN, HIGH); // Laser ON
  Serial.begin(9600);
}
void loop() {
  int status = digitalRead(RECEIVER_PIN);
  if (status == 1) {  // If laser beam is blocked
    Serial.println("⚠️ Intruder Detected!");
    digitalWrite(BUZZER_PIN, HIGH);
  } else {
    Serial.println("✅ Area Secure");
    digitalWrite(BUZZER_PIN, LOW);
  }
  delay(500);
}

Solenoids go clicky-clacky 🔩🔊🤖
We're testing out an I2C-to-solenoid driver today. It uses an MCP23017 expander. We like this particular chip for this usage because it has push-pull outputs, making it ideal for driving our N-channel FETs and flyback diodes. The A port connects to the 8 drivers, while the B port remains available for other GPIO purposes. For this demo, whenever we 'touch' a pin on port B to ground, the corresponding solenoid triggers provide an easy way to check speed and power usage.
