UNDER THE RADAR: JANUARY 2023

Our inaugural Under the Radar of 2023! Don’t sleep on these releases from eachothersmothers, Sindy Hoxha, Fritz Hager, joss lockwood, Other People, and Ariana Fig.

1) eachothersmothers - “Dead Daddy Disco”

A lack of a chorus doesn’t hamper “Dead Daddy Disco,” instead offering a more free flowing dialogue. In your face and impulsive vocally, I love how abrasive yet groovy it sounds as whole. The lyrics take a darker tone and speak of finding companionship with others after trauma and tragedy; recovery and reprieve is a journey that can be shared, but is ultimately personal (“Distrust takes a toll on your soul / There’s some things you can’t control”).

The band was inspired by disco and “a slight country twang,” but you can still hear their always eclectic mishmash of punk, electronic and funk. Their raw energy is perfect for their informal talk of reaction, guilt, friction, and fate. While things aren’t always well and dandy – sometimes it can be easy to release some tension, relate to good music, and just dance.

2) Sindy Hoxha - “feeling blue”

The latest single from Albanian singer and songwriter Sindy Hoxha is an alluring, deeply emotional pop-ballad akin to early Adele and recent Billie Eilish. Now based in Brooklyn, New York, Hoxha creates music regularly, seeking to bring together her cultural background with “the sad pop genre.” I feel like these influences are definitely present in “feeling blue,” a refreshing take on the genre as it strips down the production to let Hoxha’s voice pull at your heart.

Hoxha’s vocals are the star of this track with her vibrato creating a rich rumble to each line she sings. If you’ve just experienced heartbreak or loss — especially if things ended bittersweet — this song is the perfect addition to your playlist. Passionate chords on the piano are the only thing that accompany Hoxha’s harrowing lyrics and raw vocals. The single does a sad pop song well, and sings about the encompassing feeling that is releasing the sadness in a way that’s familiar.

3) Fritz Hager - “Caroline”

Fritz Hager is one of my favourite American Idol contestants in recent seasons, and he’s certainly coming into his own as an artist.

On "Caroline," the narrator sheepishly pieces together the events leading up to a one-night stand—the woman’s name, too. Hager's tone is soft yet has a lot of power behind it. The guitar riffs are fun and the backbeat sunny. Our protagonist does get his happy ending – albeit humorously with a little help from the local barista (Hager’s red and blue striped Idol sweater also makes a cameo in the video!). “Caroline” is catchy, crunching pop rock with butterfly feels.

4) joss lockwood - “lucky”

British Columbia-based vocalist, joss lockwood, explores a foray into the R&B genre with her latest decadent single, “lucky.” The song adds some diversity to lockwood’s already impressive musical palette that features pop and hyperpop. It’s a sensual track drawing comparisons to the holy trifecta of mellow girl R&B: Summer Walker, H.E.R., and SZA.

The song kicks off with atmospheric synth notes and lockwood’s vocals crooning in just before the bass hits. The beat to the song is something you’ve probably heard before, but that does not take away from the integrity of the track itself. The synth, bass, and snare create a dark but playful soundscape that compliments lockwood’s sultry vocals, making this single one for late night playlists.

5) Other People - “Burning”

Vancouver post-punk outfit Other People released their new single, “Burning,” in December. Its crux is one of human nature: learning, loving and loss, always in debt to each other (“If you leave it, it’ll curl up and die / Try to have it just to say goodbye”). Frontman Mark Crickmay’s vocals are decadently ominous, while new wave synthesizers and spry angular guitars forge a rather hopeful melody. The mix of traditional and alternative sounds is humbling; melancholy, yet clinging to daylight breaking through the overcast.

6) Ariana Fig - “Punchline” 

"I can play pretend / even though you never asked / Don’t have those type of friends / cause they never seem to last.”

Fig has a smoky, contemporary feel in “Punchline,” a song of self-sabotage and deep emotion. Its power is layered in desperation and longing. While it details not wanting to be the “brunt of someone’s joke,” the attention coveted is well-intended; I see it as a lack of a healthy relationship, with needs and attachment styles that don’t align at a given time.

Her voice is rich and compelling, a depth both remorseful and soured reaching for reality and true connection. The single is an aching alternative pop, pleas understood and of importance—increased by the harsh drum beats. I like the dramatic air that follows, one that is anxious and empathetic towards the main character. Maroon is out now.

Her heart was beating rapidly when she woke up with a start. She gasped loudly and sat up quickly in bed, grabbing the blankets around her to her chest like a frightened child. She was drenched in a sticky, cold sweat and she shivered. Her brain scared her with images of the undead, ghosts, or dead men. In her dream, they were in her room with her, beneath her bed where she couldn’t see them. The face of the creature had been terrifying and her brain convinced her, even though she was awake, that it was still there somewhere in the room. She glanced frantically around her and whimpered in the darkness. The curtains blocked any light pollution from the outside and the rest of her mother’s house was silent and dark. She tried to lie back down, tucking the blankets beneath every limp to create a cocoon. She closed her eyes, her chest still heaving with fear, and she started to fall back asleep. She slipped once again into a bad dream, this one more terrifying than the last because she couldn’t see what threatened her. Her body knew that she was in danger but refused to show her, so she tried to wake up but her body went numb. She tried to scream but her jaw stayed shut. She hyperventilated in her sleep, trying to fight the paralysis but it set in deeper, forcing her to face whatever it wanted to show her. She shook as she tried to move, to wake herself up, and in doing so, she managed to scream. It came out as a strangled release of air but as she fought, the scream became stronger, more desperate. Footsteps came thundering down the hall, slipping in the dark against the wood floor. Cillian stumbled inside the bedroom, the bedroom door slamming against the wall. He gripped the doorframe and panted, his eyes flying around. 

“What is it? What happened?” He asked urgently. She still couldn’t say anything, her sleep paralysis prevented her. She seemed to cry again with the same breathy yell, her body shaking with effort. He came over to the bed and saw her trying to speak or move, anything and pressed his palms into her shoulders. 

“Oh, I see-  it's ok. You’re ok. I’m right here.” He rubbed his hands across her shoulders through her wet nightshirt. He sat on the edge of the bed and shushed her, petting her softly. “It’ll be over soon. Just breath, girl.” Her eyes slowly adjusted to the dark, allowing the light to settle on his face and his beautiful eyes which looked gray in the dark. She tried to breathe evenly and started to regain feeling in her fingers and toes. It spread through her body until she felt that she could truly breathe again. Once she could move she sat up quickly and clutched her stepfather in a desperately frightened hug. She started to pant again from anxiety and he rubbed her back affectionately. 

“You’re alright, girl. It was a really bad dream but it's over now.” He whispered and cupped her face to look into her eyes, glistening with tears. “You’re getting too old for these night terrors,” he smiled gently and pulled her back into a strong hug. “Who's going to be there to hold you after you get like this when you go back to university?” He mumbled with his chin resting upon her head. She shivered from the vibration of his voice and shook her head weakly. 

“Thank you for coming.” She sniffed, trying to keep herself from crying. “I’m really embarrassed. I don’t know why I keep getting these.” She felt the cold air chill the beads of sweat on her body. 

“Don’t be embarrassed,” he shrugged casually, “it's not your fault.” He pulled away from her and patted her leg beneath the sheets. “Better now?” He asked, his face wrinkling slightly around his bright eyes. 

“A little.” She mumbled, still shaken. 

“Then I should get back to your mother.” He smiled and started to stand but she threw herself around him once again. 

“Please don’t leave! I’m scared it will happen again if you leave now.” She started to cry against his shoulder, her face pressed against his chest. She could hear his heartbeat quicken. 

“Just for a little while.” He whispered against her ear and patted her head. He pulled her arms off and pushed her gently down onto the mattress. “Scoot over.” He nodded to the bed and slid under the sheet to lie beside her. He wrapped his arm around her shoulders and let her rest her head on the large joint of his shoulder. She wiped her eyes, ashamed at how needy she’d become and nestled as close as she deemed appropriate. Cillian turned over onto his side to face her and wiped a tear from her lips. 

“It must’ve been pretty bad to get you so worked up, eh?” His eyes softened as he watched her try to compose herself. “I’ll stay as long as you want, ok? I’m not leaving until you’re ok.” He promised and laid back on his back with a sigh.

“Could you please hold me?” She whispered with a stifled sob and he looked down at her, the loose skin of his neck creasing. 

“Ah ok, c’mere.” He wrapped his other arm around her and held her tight. He was facing her now, though his head was a few inches above hers on the pillow. She slowly started to calm herself down inside his strong arms. 

“Thank you.” She whispered and put her nose against his sleepshirt, soft with sleep and washing. 

“No problem.” He said unemotionally and shifted in the bed, finding a comfortable position and cleared his throat. Her hair ticked his nose and he smoothed it down, releasing her back for a second and she tensed. “Shhh, it's ok. Still here.” He soothed as if she were an animal and he almost smiled. He liked being able to take care of someone like this, to hold them and offer them safety. Her mother hadn’t asked him for affection in weeks, claiming he was too ‘distant’ while filming his new movie. He’d always wanted children, namely a daughter. A little girl to care for and protect. He’d found that in his fiance’s daughter and while she wasn’t so little anymore, he still felt a need to protect her like a father, like her father. Completely innocent… right?

Her breathing slowed into a relaxed state and he rubbed his thumb against the soft jersey of her nightshirt. It was very warm under the blankets but he didn’t dare move and risk waking her up again. He hummed softly a song he’d had stuck in his head from his first film Disco Pigs. She slumped further into his chest, falling asleep, drooling slightly on his chest. He smiled as she did so and risked a quick kiss on her head. 

“I’ll keep the nightmares away.” He promised her as she fell asleep and slipped into a dreamless slumber, full of his scent: old timber and spice. “You’re safe with me.” He repeated over and over again as she slept, her chest rising and falling against his. He continued humming the lullaby softly against her head, beginning to fall asleep himself. Her hands held onto the fabric of his shirt, locking him into the place beside her. His elbow relaxed on the soft dip of her waist, her shirt riding up slightly and he pulled it back down to cover her completely. His jaw clenched and released as he watched her sleep against him, buried inside his arms. 

He’d never felt this way about her mother. Not this sense of need and responsibility, nor a sense of usefulness to a woman. This girl made him feel needed, necessary. He thanked her silently and pulled her closer, resting the crook of his nose against her warm forehead. 

“You’re my girl and I’ll always keep you safe.” He promised her and she mumbled something in her sleep, and he smiled. “Goodnight, darling girl.”

Now that he´s older and realized it was indeed a phase, his taste evolved into more classic artists. Like ABBA or Queen.

Mostly listens to it to block out Yuujis music. Cause he internally cries every time Yuuji plays preppy ass pop music. Makes him fr wanna rip his eardrums out.

BUT.

He has a huge guilty pleasure that not even he is aware of.

Day was beginning to break when I finally reached the lake, the dawn sun making the sky blush with the promise of brilliance.

I was all ready for the big reunion. I was all ramped up to tell that glorified naiad that I was back and her old beau, dear old daddy Art, was still dead. I wanted to see the look on her big old watery face when she saw Excalibur in my hand; ooh, I was horny for that look.

I didn’t know what to do, so I just sat down on the bank of water, laid Excalibur out on my lap, let the smell of wrongness fill my nostrils, and got into a good solid fugue state. The sun was high in the sky by the time I was jolted out of it by a light touch on my shoulder.

“Hi ‘Dred.”

Oh no. Oh sweet gods and monsters. It was him. Those eyes like a fire burned down to embers. That beautiful soft and sad smile, like a kicked puppy was transformed into lips by a witch. Those damned cheekbones. That dumptruck of an ass.

I was not prepared for this. Like, I know there’s not good time to run into your ex, okay? But while mourning your departed nemesis slash surrogate grandmother figure? When you’ve only recently crawled out of the earth? That’s gotta be Top 5 bad, right after ‘while puking at the bathroom at the Teen Choice Awards’.

“Percy? You’re … you came back too?”

“I never died, dear one,” His voice was quiet, worn smooth by time. “I have been here all along.”

“No.” His eyes were so wide, so bright. “The spiritual cut was too potent, too concentrated. More than the echo of nature defiled, this was a weapon made with intent.”

“And you didn’t stop them?”

“I am … limited in what I can do. I observe. I advise. I remember and I revere.” 

That was Percival for you. Always a simp for reverence.

“You’re a pissing *knight*, Percy. When did go all fuckboi and ghost on valour?”

“It’s more ‘Grail Shit’, I’m afraid. I can be the person who tells you that which you most need to hear on your worst day. I cannot be a noble protector or holy avenger, no matter how much I might wish to.”

“Right. Okay. Well this makes things simple at least.” I stood up, brushed myself off, and hefted Excalibur. “I can do holy avenger.”

“Careful, ‘Dred.” Percival placed a hand on either side of my face and looked me steadily in the eye. “They say that the one who goes looking for revenge should dig two graves.”

“Why? Are they killing two people?”

“No.” A bitter smile twisted those gentle lips. “One for their target and one for themself.”

“Then, honestly? I’d say this ‘dig two graves’ dickhead shows a *woeful* lack of ambition.”

Percival looked down at the sword in my hand.

“You’re not going to try and talk him out of this?”

“I could try, Sir Percival,” Excalibur spoke for the first time since we got to the lake. “but honestly, my heart is not in it. They killed The Lady. I’m just about ready to dig a whole mess of graves.”

Can I please just gush about Simple Math for a few minutes. It so so fucking good. I remember coming across your account back when Dead Disco was getting popular. I tried to get into it. And I really liked how well written it was and a lot of the dialog. But it just wasn't my thing.

Later on I found you again and read the first four or five parts of Simple Math and was HOOKED. It was so good. And of course I stopped using tumblr for a while and forgot about it entirely and of course never followed you and forgot.

Cue to finding you last week, finding out your back and reading all of Simple Math in one go and I SCREAMED! ITS SO GOOD!

Pen is the cutest thing in the entire world. I love the little bits of Price and Lou (begging for a Gaz cameo at some point). And oh my god Soap and Ghost have been done so well.

“I Was Born to Love You” is a 1985 song by Freddie Mercury, and was released as a single and on the Mr. Bad Guy album.
