ABSOLUTELY LOSING MY MIND AT THESE ORANGE BANNERS ON AMAZON FOR ARTIFICE & ACCESS I MIGHT CRY 😭 this whole anthology started because there were a bunch of people saying disabled people don’t belong in fantasy and this anthology immediately makes it into TWO top spots on Amazon because people are so excited about this anthology centered on disabled people in fantasy! 😭 I’m a little emotional, I need a sec
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Um, preorders now open! definitely on amazon (paperback and ebook got listed separately for some reason) and B&N, trying to get it into some indie bookstores, and it sounds like booktopia in austrailia has it!

I need to stop coming up with cool character concepts and start working on world building. But for now... doodled up a cool magic man with a unibrow.
He's hard of hearing so he uses a silver seashell-shaped ear trumpet, and will usually just store it away somewhere and magically summon or dismiss it as needed. Since he does have some hearing, he doesn't need the aid at all times, and it's a bit cumbersome to carry around non-magically.
Also I thought it would look really neat to have him summon it right to his ear without having to pull it out of a bag or something. So half reasonable trait, half rule of cool, hehe.
(Image Description: a digital comic featuring an unnamed original fantasy character. He is an olive-skinned man with short dark hair and a unibrow, and with lighter patches of skin indicative of vitiligo around each eye, on either corner of his mouth, and on his chest, hand, and wrist. He is pictured from the shoulders up in each panel, and wears a dull blue tunic with pale blue embroidered collar and sleeve cuff.
The first panel has him perking up at something said inaudibly - depicted as a blank speech bubble - from out of panel. In the second panel, he says, "Ah. A moment, please," and holds a sparkling hand to his right ear, his eyes closed and his brow furrowed in concentration. In the third, larger panel, he opens his eyes and smiles, and a silver ear trumpet in the shape of a spiralling sea shell has appeared in his still-sparkling hand, pointing out from his ear. He says, "Could you repeat that, friend?" End Image Description.)

hello! sorry to bother you but i am currently working on character designs for my next d&d campaign. i am creating a winged elf inspired by avariels, and he will have some form of physical disability which causes them to be unable to fly. however, i am not very educated about physical disabilities, so do you know any which might affect limbs such as wings and any ways i could portray life with them and accommodations for them in a respectful way? any tips are appreciated. thank you :)))
Wing disabilities are a bit harder to research than regular human limb disabilities, but you might be amused to learn that the very first thing i found upon a quick search for bird wing deformities was something called "angel wing", found in many different bird species. I've linked the article I found. It develops over time and can be corrected, but obviously when it happens in wild birds they have no means to fix it on their own and it becomes permanent.
Angel wing is a deformation of the wrist area, making it droop and then turn outwards. Once it's permanent, the crooked shape of the wing makes flight impossible. If a winged humanoid had this problem, they would need to worry about things like how far the crooked wing sticks out, maybe bracing it to alleviate chronic pain. I'm sure something like that would cause pain, even if it wasn't mentioned in the article. It may be helpful to clip the feathers on that part of the wing, so they're not in the way. Finding a comfortable sleep position may also be a bit tricky.
Other possible wing disabilities which I have not researched at all but sound like plausible congenital issues for people with wings:
- underdeveloped wings. They never get big enough for flight, maybe the feathers never grow in properly, possibly they're also shaped wrong for flight. Could come with chronic pain, weak muscles/atrophy, etc.
- missing wing. Somehow just didn't develop a wing, or developed a nub where the wing should be. Could also be missing just the "hand" part of the wing.
- general feather growth problems. Weak feathers, feathers that come in short, chronic molting that causes a lot of unhelpful bald patches, etc.
- chronic joint pain. Wings appear to be normal, but the joints hurt a lot and movement is difficult.
You can also go the route of disability by injury, having a wing broken or amputated or otherwise harmed in a way that is difficult or impossible to recover from.
Overall, the accommodations needed could include pain relief, a brace to keep the wing in a comfortable folded position, feather clipping, massages, etc. Mobitiy aids to let this character fly without the use of their wings is easy to handle in fantasy because you could give him an enchanted flying device of some sort. Magical prosthetic wing might work, but that depends on the disability you're working with and also wing prosthetics are pretty tricky. It would not be as functional as a real wing. If the wings are fully grown and intact, but the problem is something like joint pain, then a flight brace to steady the wings could be useful. They'd only be able to fly for short bursts though, probably. But it would be akin to giving someone leg braces so they can walk, while also having access to crutches or a wheelchair. You can work with your dm on figuring out what's allowed in the campaign setting.
As for being respectful in how you portray the character, I think the most important thing is to let them be a full person. The disability is obviously a major part of their life, but they ought to have more personality than that. Hobbies, interests, attitude.
They're also allowed to be sad about the disability, but this should not be their main defining trait. I think it is pretty normal to be sad that you have a physical difference preventing you from doing something other people can easily do. The problem in fictional characters who are sad about their disabilities is that it often becomes Their Entire Thing and then the character arc is either "so I became evil about it" or "and then they died" or "but there was a magical perfect fix!" all of which obviously don't respect the reality of being disabled. But making them totally happy go lucky about it also doesn't work. So you just need the middle area there, as that's the most realistic one. How does it feel to have a permanent disability? Well, it ends up feeling pretty normal when you're used to it. Sometimes it sucks a lot. Sometimes you hardly pay attention to it. Focus on making your character emotionally varied and give them an interesting personality that makes their interactions with other characters more fun.
Roleplay games are great for that, because you'll have to mesh with the group and really flesh out your character relationships as you go.
Anyway I hope that was all helpful! No illustrations to show, because I'm sleepy today. But good luck with your character! And maybe go check out @cripplecharacters for extra advice on generalized disability rep if you haven't already!

Been thinking of disabled monster characters lately and kt got me wondering, what would a "leg brace" equivalent for a merfolk be like? Hmmm.
I guess it comes down to the purpose of the device. Is it like a splint, where the tail has to be kept in a certain position for some reason? Is it more of a 'cradle' with flotation devices to keep them at the right buoyancy and/or to prevent their tail from dragging on the sea floor and causing damage? Function is going to inform what kind of aid a merfolk would use in the water.
I'd imagine a tail 'brace' could be made of driftwood and seaweed, or perhaps just the strong, flexible stems of something like kelp instead, with the bladders of certain types of seaweed to act as floatation devices? Or maybe whale rib bones?? Or scavenged items from shipwrecks???

It's been a very long time since I gave Kiesse some proper love!
Tumblr media
I've been hyperfixating on the setting she's from and her story lately, so I wanted to redo her design since I'd been unhappy with for a while.
One of the biggest issues I had with it, was the prosthetics she used. I think I actually had an anonymous ask on my main account about how to make wing prosthetics work, so consider this an answer to that, if you're still out there anon lol.
In the past, I had hand-waved how her prosthetics worked because there are no functional wing prosthetics irl to reference. The previous solution was basically "magic robot wings" - which folks from my main page might recognise, is an example of the "perfect magic prosthetic" trope, a trope that I, as an amputee myself, absolutely hate lol, but I just couldn't think of another way to do it without giving her wing-elbows back. It didn't really fit the technology level of the setting either, so I got to work trying to think of something better.
I ended up digging up my old animation stuff from university, modelling a very basic dragon and spent a few days animating a flight cycle (and watching a bunch of slow-mo footage of birds and bats) to see what would be needed for the full range of motion in a wing-flap, and what could feasibly be altered, as a mechanical wing prosthetic will require some alteration to the way the whole wing moves, especially since the only natural joint Kiesse has on her wings is the shoulder.
The system I came up is a wing using a pretty simple pulley system anchored to her sides. There is a wire (which is mostly hidden) pulling the wing's elbow closed by default when the wing is back, but when the shoulder is rotated forward (which it would need to be during the majority of the wing-beat) a different set of wires an pulleys pull the elbow and hand/finger open again. This allows a pretty decent (if a bit awkward) range of motion for a wing-beat, and allows the wings to fold when she's not actively flying (though the tension line attached to her side can be unhooked to prevent accidental wings-to-the-face if she was to move around a lot on the ground).
I also wanted to make the prosthetics so that Kiesse could put them on herself. With this design, the harness would be placed on her back first and done up around her stomach using her front claws or tail with some kind of reinforced zipper. Next would be the sockets, which could be slid on with the assistance of some kind of frame to hold the wing when she's not wearing it (these are not common but do already exist for prosthetic legs to help elderly people/people with other mobility problems get them on). The membane can then be pulled into a track with a locking mechanism on the harness using her tail with the loops, and finally the tension wire can be pulled down and hooked onto the harness, most likely using her tail (the hook is, admittedly, not a great design since it wouldn't be very secure, but Kiesse would lack the dexterity for much else, so I'm still figuring that part out as of right now).
As much as Kiesse herself would hate it, I also had to dim the colours of the prosthetic, since the materials they have access to wouldn't allow for the bright colours I was using before. I feel like Kiesse will probably end up painting something on it instead during her story though lol.
Anyway, I hope you enjoyed my little nerd-out lol. This took me a lot of attempts to get something that could *potentially* work without a heavy reliance on magic/tech, and I feel like a lot of the issues I couldn't solve are pretty reflective of actual mechanical prosthetics, which I have used in the past (being convoluted to get on, requiring weird alterations to how the limb naturally works to get a functional result, being a bit finicky to actually use) so I'm pretty content with it for now!

In my Mt. Everest-sized pile of WIPS, I have two urban fantasy AUs for Aurora, and in both of them Alinua uses her magic to assist in some form of chronic disability, referencing her canon struggles while adjusting it to the AU.
IDK if I'll ever post either of them, but I wanted to share that anyway. Also if anyone thinks it'd work for their own Aurora AU, it's an idea you can use :)

Writing a Wolves of the Beyond fic called Fire Wolf (more about it on my blog, adding link later). The series itself has ableism issues, but many of the characters and the main character are disabled, so i'd like some advice on how to write them!
Information that might be helpful
Warning, ableism. Because this series has as much of it as warrior cats does
All wolves are quadruped
I will not 'fix' the disabilities the wolves have nor do i think anyone wants me to
The main character has a clawless, twisted front paw and a missing ear
They act mostly like wolves (albeit without realistic pack systems) the most technological advancements most of them have are fires, bone jewelery, and stuff like that. The Sark of the Slough (wolf 'witch' whom many are superstitious about, but she's actually very nice) can make pots and mix up herbs and salves, but that's basically it
Wolf clans do not fight in the series
The fanfic is about the some of the disabled wolves in the 'omega' lowest rank type role of Gnaw Wolf the author made, and how some of them ended up leaving the horrific system behind to make a better one
Wolf eugenics. Unfortunately. They take out disabled pups to die, and if they make it back they become gnaw wolves or lone wolves (free runners i think?)
The whole reason most wolves DON'T leave is because the packless grounds contain a bunch of "outclanners", bandit wolves that have little or no affiliation and are often cruel

CHARACTER PROFILE:
THE EXISTENTIAL OF DEATH
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
'But perhaps… it's--it's better… to be happy… in spite of the bad…' - Death
Despite his name, the Existential of Death was an Existential even before Death awoke as an Existence. In other words, he's a dual-Existential—or an Existential of two different Existences—like the Existential of Order, who's also the Existential of Life.
Death's original identity has been forgotten—alongside his name, like the rest of the Existences—but his self-assigned role has remained in their memories: the altruistic psychopomp who helped reincarnate the deceased.
It is theorized that his previous role as a psychopomp is why Death joined him upon its awakening.
Death Itself only awoke as an Existence following the destruction of Reality by the Existence of Chaos, when billions of deaths occurred at once... and even more followed with the emergence of the Faewildes. Since then—and the countless deaths have died down—Death has become a much weaker Existence, focusing on minor domains of things like Rot, The Deceased, and Decline.
The Existential of Death has a distaste for his "new addition" and identifies himself as his previous Existence... but, alas, as his identity was lost to time, all we know of him now is his role as psychopomp.
... and his new identity as Death Itself.
Aka, we're calling the poor man Death from now on. A shame literally NOBODY WHATSOEVER knows what he actually is...
Tumblr media
OVERVIEW:
Chosen name: {REDACTED}
As one of the forgotten Existentials from the Old World—the world that was before Chaos shattered reality—Death's name has been forgotten on top of his original identity.
Age: ???
An entity born before humanity was even conceived of, it's impossible to know his true age. It's even further complicated when you consider the space-time distortions caused by the Faewildes.
Species: "Human" / Existential
As an Existential god—the personification of something that exists—Death technically doesn't have a species. However, he resides within a human body.
Gender identity: Male (he/him)
Sexuality: Demisexual biromantic (with a strong preference for men)
Raw magic: (existential) ?̷̝͇̆̇̑?̵͕̟͋̈́́?̴͚͔͇́ , (existential) Death, (axiomatic) death, (axiomatic) the dead, (axiomatic) decay, (axiomatic) decline, (axiomatic) corruption, (axiomatic) disease, (axiomatic) earth, (axiomatic) cold, (axiomatic) peace, (axiomatic) darkness, (...)
Applied magic: Thanks to his alternate identity as the Existence of ?̷̝͇̆̇̑?̵͕̟͋̈́́?̴͚͔͇́ , Death is an extremely proficient telepath. He can easily break into the minds of others as well as slip through extremely well put-together mental shields without the user noticing.
Death primarily uses his telepathic abilities to check to see if the ghosts of the deceased are ready or willing to move on to their next life, though he occasionally uses them to communicate with his fellow Existentials or the living who ask for him directly.
(Though, actually all the Existentials are capable of telepathy with one another. The only ones capable of it with others—and of passing it to those who hold their power—are Death and Chaos.)
Additionally from his identity as ?̷̝͇̆̇̑?̵͕̟͋̈́́?̴͚͔͇́ , Death is able to neutralize, nullify, and control others' magic.
Besides his telepathy and abilities over others' magics, Death's abilities are largely unknown... because he hasn't explored them for reasons relating to his original identity. He is infamous amongst the Existentials for being 'the weakest Existential' due to that and the relatively low strength of the abilities he has been able to present.
Death is still capable of the same things that all the other Existentials are: telekinesis, transmutation of objects, and teleportation. Unlike the others, he doesn't have the same limit to his abilities; the other Existentials require usage of their specific Existence to achieve the desired affect, while Death can use anything.
Not that it matters much when their Existences are plentiful and practically everywhere.
In spite of that, while most Existentials each have their own “pocket dimensions”—and Order, the other dual Existential (Order/Life), has two—Death only obtained his own pocket dimension when the Existence of Death joined him.
The problem? It’s a dull, lifeless world… devoid of anything worth keeping.
Tier ranking: Existential
As a dual Existential, he is a manifestation of the consciousnesses of both ?̷̝͇̆̇̑?̵͕̟͋̈́́?̴͚͔͇́ and Death Itself. He is completely unkillable due to the fact that he is not the body he resides in, though you could certainly kill the body itself.
It's just... not a good idea to try.
Maybe he'll be merciful. But none of the others will be.
Status in Existential War: Noncontender; Death was one of the few Existentials who opposed the War until (and after) the last vote bringing it into action. His few avatars were eliminated early on, saw little to no combat even while 'in action', and he's yet to replace any of them in the centuries that followed.
However, Death is close friends with Cold, who is at a tense stalemate with the rest of the Existentials. She’s often given a wide berth due to her aggression toward those active in the Existential War, general inactivity when undisturbed, her highly-skilled avatars, and her penchant for “stealing” some of the highest-tiered avatars from the other Existences.
Their friendship has seen Cold often coming to Death's defense and assisting him with most problems he encounters with the other Existentials.
Similarly, Death has awkward friendships with the Air and Magic Existentials, who'll occasionally back him up or offer him assistance without requiring the exchange of “favors”—aka the godly “iou” currency used by the Existentials.
Death has a notable, specific distaste for the Existentials of Order, Chaos, Fate, and Storm.
Spokespiece: N/A; as a skilled telepath, Death has no need of a spokespiece.
If he's not able to use telepathy for one reason or another, he will appear in person.
General appearance: As a dual-Existential of ?̷̝͇̆̇̑?̵͕̟͋̈́́?̴͚͔͇́ and Death, he technically does not have a traditional form. However, he has long-since had a portion of his consciousness residing within a human body.
Death takes the form of a short (5'2 / 157 cm), overweight dark-skinned man with close-cropped hair. He tends to shrink on on himself—close in his shoulders, lower his head, bring his arms into his torso, and sometimes even bring his legs together—when interacting with other people.
Death often avoids eye contact, avoids looking at other people altogether, and constantly finds something to fidget with while engaged in conversation. He has a preference for speaking telepathically, as he speaks with a stutter that worsens with anxiety, but often neglects to mention it due to the inherent privacy concerns involved in telepathic communication.
Personality: Once upon a time an optimist, "Death" has long since been worn down by the rest of the world and turned into a pessimist.
"Death" is generally a very soft, careful, and considerate person... who can't help his social awkwardness or desperation to escape interacting with other people. Still, he does his best to be kind and empathetic with everyone... though those with particularly egregious inclinations earn his ire and coldness.
He is slow to anger and even slower to show it, but the few times "Death" has snapped?
... the individual(s) who earned it was(/were) never the same again. Assuming they survived.
Or that there was anything left of them.
Despite his status as an Existential god, "Death" is deeply insecure and often neglects his needs to help other people. He's extremely overworked and depressed thanks to his self-assigned role as the universal psychopomp, but continues to maintain the job because 'if {he doesn't} do it... nobody else {would}. Whether because of lack of ability... or desire to'.
"Death" deeply dislikes his new identity as Death, viewing it as a curse, a reminder of the destruction of reality and the deaths that followed it, and hating how it's made many others think of him as "one of the worst things to ever Exist".
However, "Death" manages to find joy in the study and process of taking care of plants of all kinds. He can most often be found attending to greenhouses around the world—both belonging to him and otherwise—although he'll next to never still be there by the time you join him.
Also, this man is autistic, like many of my earliest-made characters... which... it's almost like this is saying something about me... NAHHHHHHHHHH!!!
Fun fact: While reality and the Faewildes were still stabilizing, "Death" aided in studying Magic Itself—though he backed off when Magic emerged as an Existential.
In the early days, "Death" and Order worked together using their inherent antimagic abilities to help reduce—and outright negate at times—the Faewildes' damage on the world. Their joint efforts were a majority of the reason it only took several hundred years for reality and the Faewildes to mostly separate from one another.
It's unknown if "Death"'s hatred for Order started in the days they worked together or after—or what even caused it—but the end of their cooperation was abrupt and absolute.
Any single wish: To see the Existential War and avatar system end
Greatest fear: Failing the people relying on him
Tumblr media
CHARACTER QUOTES:
"I want to meet 'the other Existentials'." "Th-then I-I don't know what y-you're doing he-here. I'm—h-hardly one m-my-m-myself…"
(telepathically) 'It's... the least I can do.'
"Does that count as permission?" "... it—w-won't for long..."
(telepathically) 'It's not uncommon to hear my name… most people use it as a curse…'
(telepathically) 'They want my power… if—if someone else had it… they'd go after them, too…'
"So why do you like gardens so much?" "The-they're... peaceful. It...'s... nice to list-listen to the plants... "Th-though... I-I gu-guess th-they—g-gardens—aren't... ex-act-ly my f-favorite... i-it's... a-anywhere with nature..."
"I-I would app-preciate it i-if you ga-ave me my space."
"I… co-could l-lend you m-my book…?" "And who's to say you're not going to change what it says?" (Sheepishly, with a hint of bitterness:) "Th-there's a 'rule' ag-gainst that... it—it's a... a 'major' one..."

Someone set me straight if I'm outta line but I think it'd be both insanely interesting and incredibly funny if a fantasy protagonist was like. Legitimately schizophrenic or psychotic or something. And it's not like a flaw to overcome or something, like it's not something you can "cure", it's just how their brain works and it's given space within the narrative; like protag knows they have issues and is trying to cope with them, but because their specific issues line up with a specific magic event, they're labeled a chosen one and people think they're some promised hero, but they're just mentally ill and otherwise mundane. Bonus points if they're the one trying to convince people "no I am not magic, I am just mentally disabled."
Is this anything? Am I talking out my ass? Idk I just really want better disability rep in fantasy.

How would you feel about a story where magic heals someone’s stump without reversing the amputation? By healing the stump I basically mean speeding up the healing process that real amputees already go through
Yeah that's totally fine! That's the approach I usually take with healing magic in most of my own works: it just speeds up/aids the body's natural processes.

trying to configure satyr/faun/other digitigrade legged creature in a wheelchair. works alright with crutches or cane, but I cannot figure out how digitigrade creatures would sit in any chair, and wheelchairs are a bit more complex bc of footrests. please and thank you!
for some general wheelchair art references, here are a couple useful posts I've found:
the way you design your character's wheelchair largely depends on whether or not they'll be pushing the wheels themself, and whether or not they could have a power chair (even a magic one) or if they'd need another person to push the chair for them.
if your character can't easily push their own wheelchair, then whether they rely on another person or they have a power chair, the back will be higher than it is on a manual chair, and the wheels will be smaller. the whole design will be more focused on long term comfort and support, probably having nice arm rests, maybe allowing the character to lean back more.
a manual wheelchair should still be long term comfortable to sit in, but it will have a lower back to allow for better arm mobility, really big wheels, and any arm rests on it shouldn't get in the way of the wheels. it's more focused on active mobility, it's lightweight and more compact compared to the other type of chair.
digitigrade legs have shorter thighs and calves and longer feet with a narrower point of support than plantigrade legs. so the seat area on a wheelchair will be shorter for them, and likely will need a gap in the backrest to accommodate a tail (since many digitigrade characters just also have a tail of some sort)
I defaulted to a manual wheelchair design that allows the calf and foot to stay in a straighter alignment with each other, so the length required for the footrest isn't actually that different from a human wheelchair. But I also made two more options: one where the foot is laid flat and the footrest is therefore higher off the ground, and another where the foot rest is further forward, changing the angle of the leg position.
Obviously these wheelchair designs are heavily simplified, the frame would need more structure to it on a real wheelchair. these drawings are just to show the general form and shape.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(image description: three simplified sketches of a satyr with goat-like legs. In the first image, there is a standing satyr to show the basic body and leg proportions, next to a satyr in a wheelchair. The wheelchair designs of this and the next two images all show the chair in bright red shapes while the main wheel is drawn as a faint blue overlay. the last two images show variations on the wheelchair from the first image, all of which match the description above the images. The first wheelchair mostly resembles a normal human wheelchair, made for manual use, but there is a space for the satyr's tail at the bottom of the backrest, the seat is shorter, and the footrest sits slightly more forward and lower to the ground to accommodate the longer calf and foot.
in the second and third image, the wheelchair has been altered further. first to add a much higher and longer footrest so the foot sits flat, and then splitting the difference with a footrest that is both high and further forward so the leg rests at a wide angle instead of an almost 90 degree angle at the knee. end description)
hopefully those sketches give you some inspiration on how you want to design your satyr/faun wheelchair! and I think it should help with the general design of other chairs too, wheeled or otherwise. You can also give your satyrs/fauns/other digitigrade people a different manner of sitting in domestic spaces! like cushions, low benches they can lounge on, stools, etc. they don't need to have modern human chairs.
have fun! good luck with your project!

random thought but on the topic of motorbikes i remember reading about one kind of motorbike operated entirely with hand controls and no need for any foot pedals or foot input so what if: merfolk using motorbikes to get around on land lol
Funnily enough, that's actually what my merman biker 'Ariel' uses ('Ariel' is his nickname because he's both a merman and has really long, red hair). He's a merman in my Full Moon Motorcycles universe who shifts into his human form when he's on land, but because he was hit by a boat when he was younger, he's paralysed and uses a manual wheelchair and an adapted motorbike.
So long as they can sit/balance safely on a bike with their tail, there's no reason merfolk couldn't use something like that - or adapt something so they can - to get around!

How I put disability rep in fantasy
This is mainly what I've done. So feel free to correct me.
If you want a fantasy character to have a disability for rep:
winged characters missing wings and needing prosthetic wings like a bird would.
a character who doesn't have magic *fixing* their disability and just treat it normal
have a mute siren
centaurs having those wheelchairs they give horses and dogs (i don't know how to describe)
when dealing with sound-related villains, your deaf character won't get tricked.
give your characters support systems. let them have help with things. be nice to them. it's the least you can do before you traumatize them.
