"For the first 117 years of the nation's existence, Presidents never ventured far. Unsure of the legality of being "President" outside the country, the first century of Presidents carefully remained within the nation's borders. William McKinley agreed in 1901 to meet the Mexican President, but on the border of the two countries. It wasn't until Theodore Roosevelt's trip to Panama in 1906 that a President ever traveled internationally -- and he did so as quickly as possible, sprinting aboard a U.S. Navy ship to the Canal Zone and remained out of territorial waters for only ten hours...

FDR's journey by lumbering Pan Am Flying Boat from Miami to Casablanca made him the first President to travel by air, to fly abroad, and the first to set foot in Africa. [Harry S.] Truman quickly picked up the air travel habit, boarding Sacred Cow just weeks after he took office to fly home to Independence, Missouri -- the first domestic flight in Presidential history. From that moment forward, Presidents seemed to be in near-constant states of travel. Walt Disney offered to design a special insignia for the plane -- a smiling cow with a halo over one horn and an Uncle Sam top hat over the other -- and it began to be bedecked with the flags of the countries it had visited: a total of fifty-one by the time it was retired in July 1947.

When Truman's second plane, a DC-6 named Independence after his hometown, was delivered, the designers at Douglas decked it out with an eagle motif, incorporating the cockpit windows as the bird's eyes, and painted a golden beak on the plane's nose.

As the Cold War deepened, [CIA Director] Allen Dulles pushed [President Dwight D.] Eisenhower to adopt a jet plane -- it was critical, he argued, that the U.S. President be seen leading technological advances -- and the fact that [Soviet leader Nikita] Khrushchev used jet aircraft meant it was time to retire the Presidential propeller planes...

The increasingly advanced and elaborate Presidential planes were decked out with survival gear like parachutes -- always five more than the passengers it carried, in case panicky officials deployed theirs inside the cabin accidentally. When the planes flew over oceans, Navy and Coast Guard ships were stationed in advance every 250 miles on picket duty in case of trouble. Later, as aviation technology advanced, Air Force rescue planes known as "Duck Butts" would accompany the President's plane, stocked with rescue swimmers, life rafts, and medical personnel who could aid survivors if the plane went down at sea."

so lightning, being a 2006 model/cars being in production in the early aughts, is based off of a gen4 NASCAR build. specifically a chevy monte-carlo of the early aughts, as seen in some of his early designwork:

i used to swear up and down that there was a special feature that showed a few of the guys from skywalker sound recording one of the g4s (maybe a blue and white dodge??) at skywalker ranch in california (or at the airstrip with the other cars). it may have been an old interview or its on a blu-ray special feature somewhere, but i havent been able to find it. i either dreamt it up or its been lost?? no idea.

but what i have been able to find is some of the stock audio used in Cars. Supposedly this is work done by Ben Burtt at skywalker sound [lucasfilm] in the late 70's??: [link]

For NASCAR purposes, as far as i could tell their engines didnt change drastically from the 70s-2000's, so its not wholly inaccurate to use older clips.

SO. to answer the question: its a mix of custom sound design and stock audio. its based in reality heavily, but i believe its also tuned for fiction/per character personality. i forget which interview said that it might be the mixonline one mentioned above or this old autoweek one. he's got something along the lines of partly SB2.2 and an R07. this does not mean pixar recorded specifically these motors, but prooobably something close.

and cars 3 pisses me off because they very clearly did not use any audio off of the g4s, which had a more specific screaming sound to them at high RPMs. COTR actually portrays his exhaust note more accurately than cars 3. Cars 2 is decent also, but the first film is chefs kiss.

i have more various unorganized lmq references but this ask is long enough now and probably doesnt make much sense because i am literally so amped about this topic. please note that this research is partly accurate and partly speculative/opinion. rejoice, mcqueens be upon ye.

Dorm Leaders and Eclipse Yuu

Yuu and Riddle

Riddle appreciates Yuu’s calm demeanor and efficiency, often seeking their advice when things become overwhelming, especially when he’s trying to balance his strict rules with the reality of running a dorm. Yuu and Leona

Leona finds Yuu’s calm, nonchalant attitude both intriguing and a bit of a relief. While Yuu isn’t as intense as Leona himself, they both share a certain level of independence and disdain for unnecessary drama.

Yuu doesn't try to push Leona to do anything he doesn’t want to unless it's absolutely necessary, and that earns them some level of respect from him. In return, Leona is often seen lounging around Ramshackle, his usual place to relax when he doesn’t want to deal with the stress of Savannaclaw.

Leona appreciates that Yuu never judges him for his laziness and prefers to just let him be. However, when Leona is really on edge, Yuu’s quiet support helps him feel grounded. They might give him some of their therapy candy, or simply listen to his frustrations without pushing him to talk.

Yuu is the one person who isn’t intimidated by Leona's brash attitude, which is refreshing for him.

Yuu and Azul

Azul finds Yuu’s practical, therapeutic nature both fascinating and useful. They’re the perfect balance for his ambitious, often self-serving plans. He admires how Yuu can always stay calm under pressure and secretly enjoys their calming presence.

Yuu, with their understanding of emotions, sees through Azul’s facade and is one of the few people who can directly call him out on his self-doubt or insecurities. Despite Azul’s tendency to scheme, he values Yuu's guidance when it comes to helping others in their dorm, recognizing how Yuu can offer emotional clarity that he himself might lack.

They work well together when it comes to group dynamics—Yuu helps smooth over any issues with the students, and Azul ensures everything runs like a well-oiled machine.

Yuu’s soothing influence can temper Azul’s moments of greed and stress, and while he’ll never admit it, Azul often seeks out Yuu’s advice during moments of self-reflection.

Yuu and Kalim

Kalim loves Yuu’s presence, seeing them as a calming anchor to his more chaotic and energetic nature. Yuu appreciates Kalim’s optimism, and though they may not be as outwardly cheerful as he is, they enjoy helping him with his more serious moments, offering advice or even therapy candies to help him unwind after a hectic day.

Kalim often brings Yuu little gifts or invites them to participate in celebrations, even if Yuu feels a bit out of place. However, they always oblige out of respect for Kalim’s kind heart. Yuu is touched by Kalim’s generosity and learns to open up a little more around him.

Yuu helps Kalim balance his intense energy with more quiet, peaceful moments. Sometimes, Yuu will encourage Kalim to take a step back and relax from all the parties he throws. Kalim finds this balance to be surprisingly refreshing.

Yuu and Vil

Vil initially finds Yuu’s laid-back nature and lack of concern for aesthetics to be a bit frustrating, especially since Vil prides himself on maintaining an immaculate, perfect image. However, after observing Yuu’s genuine care for others and their sharp intellect, Vil comes to respect them as someone who brings balance to the more superficial aspects of life.

Yuu is one of the few people who doesn’t bow to Vil’s beauty standards, and that intrigues him. He’s not used to someone who doesn’t fawn over his appearance, and he finds that strangely refreshing. At times, Yuu will tease him for his perfectionism, which Vil finds both annoying and endearing.

Disney CEO crackdown on password sharing, September 2024

Disney is ramping up its efforts to combat password sharing across its streaming services, including Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+, starting in September. This move was announced by CEO Bob Iger during an earnings call and marks a significant step in the company's strategy to tackle this issue.

Ladies and Redshirts, I present the quadrant's (probably) first ever Anastasia Targus cosplay.

Ensign Anastasia Targus is a character in the 1996 movie game "Star Trek: Borg." I want to thank thefanman2004 for uploading the clearest version of the game footage to YouTube; it was the only place I was able to get a clear look at Targus's implant.

I ended up taking liberties anyway, and I don't have the right combadge. Nevertheless, to my absolute shock, one guy instantly recognized my character within half an hour of my arrival, on Thursday. (ConVergence isn't "Star Trek" specific, either.)

The implant is duct tape on top of rubber medical tape, drawn on with Sharpie. The uniform is (poorly) homemade and 10 years old. I gotta replace that thing. The rank pip is gold tape over sticky cardboard.

Ensign Targus celebrates cheating death and time with an out-of-uniform Rodentoid officer.

Now working for the Temporal Police, Targus travels another ten years into the future and chills with Brad Boimler.

Finally, a safety pro-tip: malfunctioning gravitational controls can have negative affects on an officer's legs.
