The fact that people are bashing Eddie Redmayne’s version of the Emcee are not understanding the point of Cabaret at all
The fact that every single one of his movements is jerky just shows how he is like a puppet. He is not in control of the story, he is not in control of the outcome, he is simply there to tell the tale. He has no autonomy of his own
He is the Master of Ceremonies, he should be moving by himself and making his own decisions but everyone at the Kit Kat Club is fast asleep
The Emcee is the only one aware of how this story ends but he is powerless to change anything about it

Actually I think Eddie Redmayne playing the Emcee of Cabaret as inspired by tweaky Tiktok Dancers is a very clever choice that recontextualizes the character into a modern context that really does apply, as we're all staring down the barrel of fascism from the comfort of our social media accounts.
"Here's media that's accessible to everyone in the palm of your hand and provides all you could possibly want in terms of taste and indulgence! It can also be used to push misinformation and radicalize folks but don't think about that! Watch this sexy dude who moves like a cartoon character!"
Seeing folks posting takes online about how the performance was "creepy" or "too sexual" as we're watching a wave of sex negativity, censorship, and appeasement to fascists via "respectability" and "concern for children" barreling down on us proves just how timely this show's revival is.
