I know I’ve discussed writing dialogue before, but there’s always more to learn about this complex (and sometimes dreaded) task. Whether you struggle to write dialogue or are simply looking for a deeper understanding of its nuances, this post is for you.

The Strengths of Character Dialogue

To create impactful dialogue, it’s important to focus on the strengths that make your characters more relatable and engaging to your readers. Let’s explore some key traits that contribute to effective character dialogue:

- Staying calm under pressure: Characters who don’t lose their temper easily have more room to grow. By taking the high road, they can explore their world and convey meaningful messages to your readers.

- Exhibiting strong communication skills: Clear communication helps your characters relay information and connect with the audience. Since your characters are at the forefront of the story, their ability to communicate effectively is crucial.

So this is just going to be a long spiel on who Duke Thomas is and all the information we know about him in the comics. I mostly just made this to give writers and batfam fans a summary on this character or to inform fans of this guy without needing to read through many comics. His age in reference to the other batfam members. Although we don't have a canon age for him, he is shown to be in high school, I assume his second year, but we don't actually see much of his school life. He is around 2 years younger than Tim and 3 years older than Damian but you can correct me.

Duke was not adopted by Bruce. HOWEVER he was taken in as a ward, just like Dick. He has living parents and family like Steph and no one considers her a Wayne (actually, people do but I guess they're just weird /jk)

He does not live at the manor, he lives in the Narrows. I did this whole thing already, His legal guardian is his older cousin Blah Blah Blah just read this thing i wrote

His parents are literally cured. This is actually a pretty recent addition so I don't blame people for not knowing but yeah, his parents are fine. I'm not sure what this means for Duke because DC just loves him so yk...

His powers. Well to start, his powers include Photokinesis, Ghost Vision (seeing into the past), Cosmic Perception, X-Ray Vision, Telescopic Vision, Microscopic Vision, Invisibility, Umbrakinesis, Shadow Absorption, Shadow Generation, Shadow Bending, Shadow Traversal, Photo-Umbrakinesis, Power Amplification (of other metas) and Accelerated Healing. And, he awoke to his powers AFTER becoming Signal (surprising, I know!). Additionally, His mom does have the metagene, so yes he is a meta but! his biological father, Gnomon is an immortal albeit, not very clearly established. We don't know what effects this has on Duke, whether he will become immortal or something but people have wrote some really interesting explorations of this idea.

His suit and everything were designed by Bruce. Duke didn't actually ask to be bright yellow but at least he got to name himself, in memory of his mother.

Okay let's see, vigilante group, kids from all over Gotham, started by Alfred, still exists in canon just not as the team we know (Dax, Riko, Izzy, Dre) Speaking of, the WAR kids have been sent to Arkham Juvie, Duke and Izzy are dating and Dax & Riko are meta vigilantes now and they hate Duke for 'betraying' them and becoming a Bat.

So I was thinking about all the very limited canon info we got on Color and the souls—not like MPD/DID supposedly like adding their traits or characteristics to his original self (self, not personality), , it is purposefully left ambiguous if the souls talk to Color or not, Color likes patience the most because he cannot control his emotions and it “makes” him calm, and we see what happens when Color is “filled with” a certain trait.

Being “filled with Kindness” causes not only his eyelight and flames to turn green, associated with the kindness soul, but Color excitedly and intensely hugs Cross with an almost childlike glee and innocence about him..even as Cross actively resists the hug, screaming at Color and calling him a freak.

And Color doesn’t seem to even really notice the insults or the social cues that Cross doesn’t want to be hugged—as if not understanding why he wouldn’t want to be.

The distinction being made here is likely emphasizing that Color’s absorption of the six human SOULs is not akin to Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) because it does not involve the formation of separate, autonomous identities or alters within his psyche due to chronic prolonged trauma in childhood.

(Note that, unlike Killer, we do canonically have information about Color/Sans that suggests a childhood of prolonged neglect and parentification, at least. Types of trauma.)

Instead, the SOULs seem to function as external influences that affect his emotional state, behavior, and possibly his cognition, but they do not appear to have their own independent sense of self within him (or if they do, it remains unclear).

(Or at least, this is possibly how it is experienced for Color at first—perhaps before the SOULs and he could actually communicate, or perhaps before the SOULs were aware of Color, of each other, of themselves even.)

Rather than simply incorporating the traits of the SOULs into his personality as passive characteristics, it seems that each SOUL has an active and overwhelming effect on him when he is “filled with” it.

This suggests a more direct, almost possession-like influence, where the SOUL’s trait doesn’t just enhance an existing aspect of his personality but instead imposes itself upon him, altering his behavior in ways that may not align with his usual self-control or desires.

For example, when he is “filled with Kindness,” he doesn’t just act a little more kind; his entire emotional state and actions are dictated by the Kindness SOUL’s influence, to the point of engaging in intense, unrestrained physical affection even when social cues indicate it’s unwanted.

This could suggest that the SOULs override his natural impulses and decision-making processes rather than merely amplifying his traits.

His preference for the Patience SOUL also supports this idea, he doesn’t say that Patience helps him be calm but that it makes him calm, implying an external force exerting control over his emotions rather than merely enhancing his ability to regulate them.

This suggests that Color, left to his own devices, struggles with emotional regulation to an extreme degree, and the SOULs provide a sense of stability or structure that he lacks.

If the SOULs were more akin to internalized traits or parts of his personality, he might have more agency over how they influence him. But instead, it appears that they exert a force upon him that dictates his behavior in a way that seems almost involuntary, possibly even suppressing his own natural responses in favor of the SOUL’s defining characteristic.

If Color is filled with Bravery, he wouldn’t just become braver, he might lose all sense of caution, acting as if he were invincible. This could make him fearless to a dangerous degree, taking risks that his normal self would never consider.

He could stand up to a clearly more powerful opponent without hesitation, even when it’s irrational to do so. If someone threatens him, he might not back down, even if the best choice would be to retreat.

If Color is filled with Patience, his emotions might become unnaturally subdued, no longer experiencing irritation, frustration, or urgency. Rather than helping him manage his emotions, this would override them, making him eerily tranquil regardless of the situation.

If someone insults or attacks him, he remains completely still and unbothered, even if he logically knows he should react. In a high-stakes moment, such as a battle or crisis, he moves unhurriedly, seemingly detached from any sense of danger.

He could sit in total silence for long periods, not out of contemplation but because he lacks the impulse to move or speak.

If Color is filled with Kindness, he might become excessively gentle and affectionate, unable to restrain himself from expressing warmth even when it’s unwanted or inappropriate. This wouldn’t be a mere inclination toward kindness; would be an irresistible compulsion to give kindness, regardless of how it’s received.

He hugs or comforts someone who clearly doesn’t want it, not understanding why they would reject it. He refuses to fight back against an enemy, even if they are actively attacking him. If someone expresses anger toward him, he might respond with unwavering empathy, seeming oblivious to their hostility.

Rather than merely adding these SOUL traits to his personality, they seem to override his natural responses, compelling him to act in accordance with their defining principles.

He doesn’t just become more patient—he is patient. He doesn’t just gain more courage— he is brave to the point of recklessness. The distinction is that these traits don’t simply blend with his personality; they dictate his behavior, sometimes to an extreme, making him act in ways that might be completely unnatural for him under normal circumstances.

Before the Scholars devolved in that cavern with the accursed crystals, there was life to be found down there. Subterranean creatures called this underground world home, skittering and slithering amongst the parasitic Black Bile. Yet, it would seem that the mind draining effects of these growths have had varying success against these beasts. Some of them show clear influence from these shards, while other animals go about their lives unharmed. One could only guess on why that is, perhaps they don't have the right humors or their minds are already too bestial to be affected? Regardless, a biome did exist down below, a secret world that enjoyed its peaceful isolation. But then the Scholars arrived...

The Scholars who broke open this seal and delved into this underground world brought forth change. The crystals that lay dormant for so long stirred at the prospect of more information to absorb. The buried land began to awaken, and the calm stagnation was churned. And when the Scholars fell to the mind drain of these crystals, the resulting tribe of primitive madmen would oust the creatures who peacefully lived here. Driven from their homes, these beasts would grow irate and desperate, lashing out at anything that was perceived as a threat or food. But as it turns out, it wasn't just the crazed Scholars who afflicted these lands, but also the things they lost...

The Scholars of the Towering Archives can always be seen wearing bone-bile prosthetics, as the extra pair of limbs aids in their work. More hands to help carry books or deal with information crystals. Plus, the addition of two more limbs allows them to be even closer to their beloved termites. Sort of like the thinking that the Academy's Alchemists have with their four tendril arms and appreciation for sea stars. In fact, one could say that there are far more similarities between these two groups than one would like to admit. And if recent rumors are true...Regardless, these limbs are a staple of the Scholar attire, yet these brain-drained Scholars now lack them. This is because these prosthetics call upon Black Bile to function, and have a knowledge infused in them from both creation and their user. When the minds of these Scholars were lost, the sustenance these limbs relied upon dried up. That, and their own programming began to be affected by this very same aura of absorption. So thus the limbs shed themselves from their crude masters, now unsuitable hosts for them. And when a needing thing loses its source, it seeks out another.

Before this event, amongst the denizens of this underground land were great worms. Slithering masses that burrowed through the ancient flesh and swallowed what morsels they found. Life for them was pretty simple, but then the crystals were awoken and the Scholars sent their world into chaos. And from this upheaval came a swarm of hungering prosthetic limbs, seeking new hosts for them to latch onto. The giant worms were far from ideal, but the malfunctioning arms sensed greater potential in them then their lost masters and grabbed on. And in a terrible moment, the serpentine beast of the darkness was consumed by these needing limbs, and became their new host.

Though what befell these worms was parasitization, things would eventually settle into a symbiosis. The worms had Black Bile to provide, and the prosthesis gave them limbs they never had. New potential, new abilities, and a new found hunger. As the many grasping arms give them far better reach and snaring maw, it also requires more sustenance to fuel. And thus these "Collector Worms" now slither through the caverns, seeking any and all prey to devour within the bony embrace of their reaching maw....

But they aren't the only life that has been impacted by the degraded Scholars and their abandoned limbs...

I also wanted to add that I know typically with vampires and mates etc that they immediately know and are bewitched but because the reader Yuri is 16 she isn’t actually aware of her attraction to Bakugou, well she is but not in the instinctual vampire sense, not until she turns 17 which will be soon but the closer her birthday is the more obvious its becoming hence the whole his smell is overwhelming. It also works on Bakugou too but its Bakugou so hes just gonna ignore it.

You stood over your fathers limp body as you kept your eyes narrowed on that blue haired boy and his freakish pet. His mouth opening to speak when the doors were kicked open a loud bang drew your attention as you looked round seeing All Might. His face bare of any smile, lips tightly curled and brows furrowed as his footsteps tapped off the ground

"Have no fear students. I am here" his tone was deadly serious. You looked down at your father took this opportunity to grab him as you started dragging him towards the others.

Kirishima rushed by Bakugou to help you. Bakugou quickly following as they helped bring your father to the top of the steps. You sniffled, tears springing from your eyes as you held his head in your lap. Bakugou took a seat beside you, reaching and putting his arm around you, hand grabbing your waist. He felt compelled to comfort you, something in his chest pulling him towards you.

All Might looked down at his dear friend and at you and whispered softly an apology to you both for not being here on time. You watched as All might made his way down to face that beast. You followed quietly, Deku creeping behind you also. You wanted revenge, something in your chest pushing you to move as anger filled you.

Some of the lower criminals got ready for All Might but just as you blinked they fell to the ground, absolutely no match for his speed nor strength. He continued on to the creature and began attacking it, landing hit after hit but it really had no effect. The creature taking it easily.

“Nomu here has shock absorption All Might. Youd have to gouge his brain out if you really wanted to hurt him” The boy said, as All Might continued to dodge the creature.

“Thanks for telling me how to beat him! I just have to were him down and then its on to you!” All Might yelled as All Might grabbed the creature from behind and flipped him over. You watched eyed wide at his sheer strength as the creature went head first into the concrete. A huge cloud of dust appearing and now blocking the fight.

You stood tense as the dust dissipated and a gasp left your mouth. All Might had put the creature into the ground but a portal appeared below him, allowing the creature to come out the other end. His claws grabbing All Mights chest through the portal and drawing blood as All Might struggled in the awkward position.

“Sorry All Might but burying Nomu in the ground so he couldnt move wont work. Hes built after you so he is as strong as you are” the boy informed as All Might gritted his teeth.

You watched as the portal man, Kurogiri, stood over All Might. The portal slowly becoming smaller as Nomu disappeared inside of it, dragging All Might further. Kurogiri explained his plan to crush All Might with his quirk and your eyes widened, seeing the Pro-Hero needed help but Izuku moved quicker than you.

He ran forward ready to help as Kurogiri warped into Izukus line of attack, opening a portal and you quickly rushed forward feeling your body unfreeze itself from the position you were in but Bakugou blasted himself above you, landing down on Kurogiris metal body and keeping him in place.

You ran forward. Your scythe coming down on the arm that dug into All Mights bloodied side, freeing him as ice grew on the ground and up the Nomus legs, trapping him. Shoto was here.

“Kurogiri. Youve really got us into a mess here” The boy groaned. Kurogiri tried to move but Bakugou just blasted the metal body of his.

“You move and ill blow you into so many pieces theyll be piecing you back together for months you bastard” Bakugou growled and you couldn’t help the small smirk for a hero he was quite villainous.

The portal however the Nomu was in became smaller as the creature slipped through and out the other side. His arm fully regenerating that made All Mights eyes widen, surprised by his regeneration quirk.

“Nomu, free kurogiri” the boy ordered and your eyes widened as the creature roared and charged at Bakugou. He was too fast. Your body moved, not thinking something in you needed to protect Bakugou. He was yours after-all..

All Might was quick after you. Your speed almost matching his as your blood transformed. A long chain with your scythe at the end as you threw and landed it into the Nomus shoulder. Your heels dug into the ground trying to slow the creature as it roared and whipped its head round seeing you. It whipped its arm forward and you yelped as you flew by it, hitting the concrete wall in front.

You coughed, head spinning and aching as you slouched down against it. Your eyes rolling back as everything went dark. The last thing your ringing ears could just make out was shouting.

Bakugou turned, pushing by the red head as he boarded the bus, accompanied by other teachers who arrived to the scene. He took his seat, his mind buzzing as he looked at his hands, hands that were covered in your blood. One glove removed when he checked for your pulse and suddenly the crippling hold on his heart returned as he remembered how he couldn’t find one and how cold you were. His arms sore as he now felt the growing weight of his gauntlets dragging them down.

His mind too wrapped up in this new emotion he was feeling. He clambered off, entering the changing rooms. His body moving itself as his brain tried to make sense of this feeling, was it shame for being too weak? No, embarrassment for letting Kurogiri go? No. He couldn’t figure it out, maybe it was just because he had witnessed someone die; a classmate, someone he was close to. You a person he grew to care about over these past wee-

“Katsuki!” His mothers voice broke his focus on his spiralling mind. Her eyes soft and happy to see her son had minimal injuries but the smile she had faded as he made his way over and got into the car without saying or, well shouting a word.

“Katsuki, are you okay” she asked as she got into the car. He only glanced over at her before returning his gaze to the window and her mind mulled over, maybe the student that is in critical condition is his friend.

The ride home was quiet and tense and even worse at the house. Bakugou ignoring the question of what would he like for dinner as he headed to his room and into his bed, falling onto it. He rolled over and suddenly sat up as he grabbed his book bag and threw it across the room, angry and fed up now with this heavy feeling in his chest. He fell back letting out a growl as he stared at his ceiling. You were dead, he would no longer be able to see you. Project NOMU

so I mentioned in my : herpetons message post that kyudai garaki was the hpsc lead scientist and had a project known as project nomu, but what exactly is project NOMU? Well I'll gladly inform you. Dr garaki has dedicated his life to studying quirks and their genetics, and from this research he was able to concoct a sinister serum, multiplier. When injected into the bloodstream, multiplier would expand and duplicate a persons q-genes, manifesting 3 new quirks in the process. The project was put on hold for a while until the rising of the vigilante herpeton. The hpsc needed a powerful weapon to get rid of him before he exposed their corruption, so they gave the project the greenlight.

The subject was a petty thief who was taken there against his will, he had no close family memebers or friends, making him the perfect target.

The mans name was daruma ujiko, his quirk was absorption and release, allowing him to touch a person with his hand and temporarily gain access to their quirm while barring them from using it, keep in mind this only works on emitter quirks.

After being dosed with multiplier, he mutated into an 8 ft tall, 900 pound behemoth with jet black skin and a beak-like face. His new quirks were as follows

Body bulk: a mutant quirk which gives the user a huge, durable, muscular body.

Shock absorption: allows the user to tank nearly any blunt force impact.

Super regeneration: allows the user to regnerate quickly from nearly any injury.

The subject was named nomu be the doctor. Keep in mind the serum has no effect on the injectees mental state, so in order to have the nomu do as they say, the commission impalcted a capsule at the back of his neck which injected him with a steady flow pf scapolomine to revert him into a mindless, submissive, zombie-like state.

Afterward, dr garaki had his pet skink, johnny, warp the nomu to hosu, where herpeton was last spotted. The heroes intervened but got absolutely creamed. After herpeton got nomu to chase him out of the city and into the woods nearby, he and nomu duked it out, until herpeton was able to pull out the capsule mind controlling him. After briefly falling unconscious, daruma came back to his semse and told hereton what happened to him. Mortified, herpeton offers to have him a place to stay, but daruma declines deciding its best to stay in somewhere secluded like the woods for his safety, away from the commisions prying eyes. Herpeton and daruma will meet again.

4. His magic is off the scale. Avaritia's copy ability was one thing, we didn't really get to see Gula and Luxuria's abilities but Superbia being able to create people and a pocket dimension??

5. His effect on the blue sky wasn’t a heart shaped-notion but black fragments

6. Colour is so deliberate and holds so much information in this manga but he’s the only Deadly Notion whose viral absorption mechanism (heart arrow through the head) does not correspond with whatever effect he has on the sky: he’s sky blue just like the Ainos!!!

Before the manga revealed that Superbia’s magic was in those black sections of sky I thought that the final thing to break would be the sky itself. Idk I still think it's far too big a coincidence that he and the Ainos are sky blue, but the lower half of his magical boy design is pitch black and Superbia is also consistently linked with darkness, not only in his magic but also in his appearances and when he speaks so hmm!

7. Maybe not such a surprise because he's able to mimic other people but he's the only one whose costume is different as a magical boy versus as a notion: sometimes he still has the coat (without the embellishments/crown though), but the other clothes he had on his upper body and his shoes are gone and he's wearing different trousers (not black!! edit: after reading ch 39 I guess that's just a stylistic choice, because he's wearing the greyish trousers + no shirt in the flashback too)

I can't wait to find out what makes him so different from the others and how that ties into the story!

Inside-out galaxy growth observed in the early universe

Astronomers have used the NASA/ESA James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) to observe the ‘inside-out’ growth of a galaxy in the early universe, only 700 million years after the Big Bang.

This galaxy is one hundred times smaller than the Milky Way, but is surprisingly mature for so early in the universe. Like a large city, this galaxy has a dense collection of stars at its core but becomes less dense in the galactic ‘suburbs’. And like a large city, this galaxy is starting to sprawl, with star formation accelerating in the outskirts.

This is the earliest-ever detection of inside-out galactic growth. Until Webb, it had not been possible to study galaxy growth so early in the universe’s history. Although the images obtained with Webb represent a snapshot in time, the researchers, led by the University of Cambridge, say that studying similar galaxies could help us understand how they transform from clouds of gas into the complex structures we observe today. The results are reported in the journal Nature Astronomy.

“The question of how galaxies evolve over cosmic time is an important one in astrophysics,” said co-lead author Dr Sandro Tacchella from Cambridge’s Cavendish Laboratory. “We’ve had lots of excellent data for the last ten million years and for galaxies in our corner of the universe, but now with Webb, we can get observational data from billions of years back in time, probing the first billion years of cosmic history, which opens up all kinds of new questions.”

The galaxies we observe today grow via two main mechanisms: either they pull in, or accrete, gas to form new stars, or they grow by merging with smaller galaxies. Whether different mechanisms were at work in the early universe is an open question which astronomers are hoping to address with Webb.

“You expect galaxies to start small as gas clouds collapse under their own gravity, forming very dense cores of stars and possibly black holes,” said Tacchella. “As the galaxy grows and star formation increases, it’s sort of like a spinning figure skater: as the skater pulls in their arms, they gather momentum, and they spin faster and faster. Galaxies are somewhat similar, with gas accreting later from larger and larger distances spinning the galaxy up, which is why they often form spiral or disc shapes.”

This galaxy, observed as part of the JADES (JWST Advanced Extragalactic Survey) collaboration, is actively forming stars in the early universe. It has a highly dense core, which despite its relatively young age, is of a similar density to present-day massive elliptical galaxies, which have 1000 times more stars. Most of the star formation is happening further away from the core, with a star-forming ‘clump’ even further out.

The star formation activity is strongly rising toward the outskirts, as the star formation spreads out and the galaxy grows in size. This type of growth had been predicted with theoretical models, but with Webb, it is now possible to observe it.

“One of the many reasons that Webb is so transformational to us as astronomers is that we’re now able to observe what had previously been predicted through modelling,” said co-author William Baker, a PhD student at the Cavendish. “It’s like being able to check your homework.”

Using Webb, the researchers extracted information from the light emitted by the galaxy at different wavelengths, which they then used to estimate the number of younger stars versus older stars, which is converted into an estimate of the stellar mass and star formation rate.

Because the galaxy is so compact, the individual images of the galaxy were ‘forward modelled’ to take into account instrumental effects. By using stellar population modelling that includes prescriptions for gas emission and dust absorption, the researchers found older stars in the core, while the surrounding disc component is undergoing very active star formation. This galaxy doubles its stellar mass in the outskirts roughly every 10 million years, which is very rapid: the Milky Way galaxy doubles its mass only every 10 billion years.

The density of the galactic core, as well as the high star formation rate, suggest that this young galaxy is rich with the gas it needs to form new stars, which may reflect different conditions in the early universe.

“Of course, this is only one galaxy, so we need to know what other galaxies at the time were doing,” said Tacchella. “Were all galaxies like this one? We’re now analysing similar data from other galaxies. By looking at different galaxies across cosmic time, we may be able to reconstruct the growth cycle and demonstrate how galaxies grow to their eventual size today.”

Lateral Interpositus Nucleus: This part of the brain in Gallifreyans is linked to conditioning and memory implantation and seems to be a bit more susceptible than other methods, but it makes a false memory isolated.

The Limbic System: Gallifreyans' limbic system is highly developed, allowing them to zip-file memories for long-term storage. This means that even if a memory is tampered with or erased, it could be retrieved later with the right stimuli, like chronon particles (though overuse isn't advised due to radiation risks).

Telepathic Defenses: Time Lords have enhanced psionic abilities, which include telepathic defences. These defences can detect and counteract attempts at memory tampering. Their ability to create psychic barriers around their thoughts can prevent unauthorised access and manipulation.

Genetic Modifications: Time Lords have genetic enhancements that allow them access to their planet's collective memories through the Matrix. This connection to ancestral memory provides a backup of sorts, making it difficult to permanently erase or alter their personal memories.

Advanced Healing and Regeneration: The ability to regenerate can also serve as a defence mechanism. During the regenerative process, damaged or altered brain parts, including those affected by memory erasure techniques, can be repaired and restored to their original state.

Drug Absorption: Gallifreyan biology is highly efficient at breaking down substances, including drugs. This means that Retcon, which relies on being absorbed into the system to work, would require significantly higher doses to have the same effect as it would on humans. Even then, the absorption might be too slow to fully erase memories before the body's defences kick in.

Gas Absorption: Gallifreyans have a respiratory bypass system that allows them to survive without inhaling harmful substances. This makes them resistant to gas-based memory erasure methods, such as Retcon gas, which must be inhaled to take effect.

Neural Pathway Redundancy: Gallifreyans might have multiple redundant neural pathways in their brains (leave that theory with me for a while). If one pathway is compromised by memory erasure techniques, the information could still be accessed through alternative routes.

Self-Induced Memory Rewiring: Gallifreyans have the ability to see 'dead spots' in their brain, and can rewire their own neural pathways to bypass areas potentially affected by memory tampering. Gallifreyans possess a pick n mix of protections against forced memory loss/alteration/implantation. Their advanced brain structures, robust memory systems, and psionic abilities make them highly resistant to measly things like Retcon. While it's very possible for their memories to be tampered with, trying to erase a Gallifreyan's memories is like trying to delete a file from a computer with multiple backup systems—it’s not going to be easy, and they might just remember that you tried.

PSA about hair removal

This post is for anyone who's seeking hair removal, but especially for the many other trans women / trans fems I see being given misinformation by laser or electrolysis technicians, especially in the US and UK 🥺

Laser hair removal

* Permanent hair reduction.

* Always shave the area closely beforehand. Laser is less effective if you do not shave.

* Ideally look for a clinic that uses something like a Candela GentleMax Pro or newer. Such machines are less painful & more effective than ones like any of the Alma Soprano devices.

* 6-8 sessions will typically be the sweet spot before moving on to electrolysis.

* If the technician or clinic tell you not to use numbing cream, that's a massive red flag against their knowledge. A technician does not need pain feedback from you to know they're using safe levels!

Electrolysis

* Permanent hair removal.

* You must let the hair grow at least a few mm before a session.

* Ask your electrologist for an estimate of how long it will take to clear an area, as their expertise and speed will vary. For example, NHS Scotland estimates it can take 250-400 hours to fully clear a face of facial hair. My own highly-experienced electrologist estimated 100-150 hours max for me, but has nearly cleared my face in under 25 hours. She's not yet taken more than about 120 hours to clear someone's face / neck fully.

* Again, numbing cream is not only absolutely safe, it's in fact highly recommended if you cannot afford local anaesthetic injections.

* For most folks, it's as much a mental challenge as it is about physical pain management. Even with numbing cream and strong painkillers, it's gonna hurt, especially in 2 hour+ sessions and around sensitive areas (especially the top lip and around the mouth).

* Aloe vera gel helps with post-electrolysis swelling and recovery.

Numbing cream

* The most common brand of numbing cream is EMLA, which is 2.5% lidocaine and 2.5% prilocaine.

* The strongest cream I've found without prescription is Tattoo Numbing Cream, which is 5% lidocaine and 5% prilocaine.

* If you can get a stronger cream on prescription at an affordable cost, this is definitely something to consider.

Jacoby, Kelley, Brown, and Jasechko (1989) described a robust memory illusion that they dubbed the false fame effect. This effect can be obtained as follows. Participants are first required to read a series of nonfamous names. The next day, they are shown a list of names, consisting of the old nonfamous names, new nonfamous names, but also names referring to famous people. Participants are then asked to make fame judgements for these names. Under these conditions, a false fame effect will occur, which means that participants falsely identify previously studied (old) nonfamous names as famous. Apparently, participants are misled by the familiar sound of old nonfamous names. Researchers agree that the false fame effect is a subtle example of a source monitoring error (Schacter, 1999). Source monitoring refers to a person’s ability to remember the source from which information was acquired (Johnson, Hashtroudi, & Lindsay, 1993). In case of the false fame effect, the source of familiarity of the old nonfamous names is forgotten, paving the road to false fame.

Interesting to know there's a concept to invoke when talking about how advertising is more powerful than we like to think. Relentless ads breed familiarity, which eventually gets misattributed and breeds trust. Even when you don't feel susceptible to the message of an ad, over time you begin to believe that the reason you trust a brand is because you've heard about it so often-- maybe because people around you trust it, or maybe because it has enough money to buy ads, which implies that it gets many repeat customers.

(...) Lipinski and Pope (1994) described some clinical cases involving serious source monitoring errors. Their patients frequently suffered from aggressive intrusions, yet under the influence of therapy, they came to view these intrusions as recovered memories of real traumas. Thus, in these cases, the internal source of the intrusions was forgotten. Following this line of reasoning, it is conceivable that at least some recovered memories of traumatic childhood events originate from source monitoring errors. That is, it might well be that in some cases, imagery (intrusions, dreams, or fantasies) is experienced as a genuine recollection, because it has acquired a high degree of familiarity through previous therapeutical conversations (e.g., Belli & Loftus, 1994).
