i know whipping girl is primarily focused on the transfeminine side of things but as a trans guy i already think it has some super interesting things to say about transmasculinity.
While trans people on the female-to-male (FTM) spectrum face discrimination for breaking gender norms (i.e., oppositional sexism), their expressions of maleness or masculinity themselves are not targeted for ridicule-to do so would require one to question masculinity itself.
like obviously trans men face transphobia in different ways than trans women but i’d never thought of it in that specific way- it’s a really good point. my masculinity specifically has never been mocked but rather the fact that i am performing it at all.
its a really interesting way to point out the differences in oppression that trans men and trans women face. while a trans woman might be mocked for being too feminine, a trans guy isn’t (at least in my experience) mocked for being too masculine, rather for attempting to attain masculinity at all. femininity for trans women is seen as unattainable where as for trans men it’s seen as inescapable. whichever way you look, the concept of womanhood is being weaponised against trans people. as is such, transphobia towards trans men and trans women both stems from misogyny.
i’d love to hear some other trans guys thoughts on this! do you agree? or have you been in a situation where your masculinity has been mocked?
i think i’ll post excerpts of my favourite bits as i read through, even just these first few pages have been great. if anyone thinks i’m completely off base with my analysis let me know haha.

As you protest and donate and speak up and uplift Palestinian voices, remember to take a look at the things you love as well. Little things you might take for granted; your favorite book, art of your favorite characters, your friends bickering in a group chat in another tab, your pet napping on a chair. These are the little luxuries that Palestine stands to lose, has already lost. These are the things that those in Rafah may not live to see again, the things that are lost with the martyrs. With all the love you hold for these moments, keep fighting. Keep talking. Keep protesting, keep writing letters, so that someone across the world, every bit as human as you, has the chance to regain the little things, for these are the very things that make us.

Does anyone have a good summary of the whole All For the Game series? I’m interested in the new book but I don’t wanna have to reread the old ones first to remember everything that happened

Shit guys. Animorphs hits different. This series is staggering and I'm an adult. I'm pretty sure this was shelved in junior fiction, not even young adult. I can't tell if it is that I've gotten more sensitive as I've matured (evidenced by the hunger games getting me more each time I read it) or if this series hits just as hard as any age, but man oh man. Good shit.

Imagine having the guts 2 take a james baldwin story and literally change the pronouns and put it in a book and publish it. I’m aware this myth compendium is for children but still. ????

maybe an unpopular booktwt/booktok/bookstagram opinion but buying limited special editions of a book or book series you havent read is so odd to me. Like theres people who have actually read and want that limited limited edition but you just buy it to look pretty on your shelf. Yeah you can buy books you plan to read but i have seen so many posts of people buying DOZENS of books and just having them on their tbr or displayed on their shelf.
its a big part of the growing issue of overconsumption on booktok/bookstagram/booktwt. Theres nothing wrong with buying a book you like but these people doing expensive book hauls, especially off of amazon (which has tons of its own issues to unpack) are so weird to me.
Support libraries!!! read a book from the library before you buy it!! this benefits way more people in the long run and is much more sustainable.

Went to the beach, took a cold swim, dried in the sun while reading Crime and Punishment and drinking iced coffee. Walked back home. Ordered a copy of Eroticism by Georges Bataille. Checked my bank account and realised I have enough money to spoil myself with a new perfume. Made plans with friends. Felt better.

The temptation to read physical copies of the Dungeon Meshi books is warring in my mind with the realisation that where I live each book will cost me $30 and there are 14 of them.
Also absolutely nowhere here has the first 6 available and it looks like it could be until freakin' JULY before they come back in stock.

Hey, Owl House fans that are looking for other media to get into now that the show has ended: check out the Nevermoor series by Jessica Townsend!
The series is about a young girl named Morrigan Crow, who is whisked away to the magical city of Nevermoor the night she is supposed to die. Once there, she has to navigate her new home in the whimsical Hotel Deucalion, her education at the prestigious Wundrous Society, and the truth about the mysterious and powerful legacy she belongs to.
The series is categorized as middle grade/~YA, so it's similar in how it can appeal to an all-ages audience. Like The Owl House, it balances lighter moments with darker, more sinister revelations (and they're just getting started!). The author is queer herself and openly expresses her thoughts against + directly confronts bigotry and hatred while also being just an all-around wonderful person.
It contains some classic tropes such as a magical school, found family, and corrupt authority figures, all in unique and fresh ways. There is a diverse cast of characters, including a sapphic couple where one of them works at a magical library (sound familar...? 😉). There are several multi-dimensional antagonists, and they all work to challenge Morrigan and the story in their own unique ways. Also: there's a giant talking cat! Love that.
The series has an interesting magic system + worldbuilding, with tons of lore and history to dig your hands into and theorize if that's what you like. The character development is so fun and interesting as Morrigan and her friends grow up and find their place in the world. The world is so fleshed out that you can easily pick a minor side character or a location that's briefly mentioned, and extrapolate on how and where they fit into the story and themes as a whole.
There are three books out already, out of nine planned books. The fourth book Silverborn comes out in October, so there's plenty of time to get caught up until then! I highly recommend giving it a try.
