đ Literally all I know about sheets is how to input text and pictures. đ
This is a beautiful list, though. You did a great job with it! I had even already saved this generator for possible future writing use. đ©·
Hm. Even if I did know how to incorporate this into Sheets, the setup is different, since you want game by game while I'm going by alphabetical. As someone who is unfamiliar with spreadsheets, I honestly can't tell if this would speed things up or not. đ€
If someone more familiar with this kind of stuff knows something useful, please leave a comment. đ So much work was put into this; it would be amazing if both projects could be incorporated together.
I put this at the bottom of a reblog but then I realized a lot of people probably won't hit the read more and scroll down that far so I'm posting it as a separate post as well:
I've been working on a project to make a spreadsheet of every Zelda enemy and what games they've been in for easier reference than the wikis. I've only finished A through B, so I still have 24 letters in the alphabet to go. It's a huge project that takes me a long time. I kind of left it alone because I realized I didn't really need it for my story, but if people would for sure definitely use it regularly... I could get back to working on it? It's likely to take me literal years at my slow pace, though. If somehow A-B Zelda enemies are useful for you, I suppose I could share the file. Let me know?

You donât have to pay for that fancy worldbuilding program
As mentioned in this post about writing with executive dysfunction, if one of your reasons to keep procrastinating on starting your book is not being able to afford something like World Anvil or Campfire, Iâm here to tell you those programs are a luxury, not a necessity: Enter Google Suite (not sponsored but gosh I wish).
MS Office offers more processing power and more fine-tuning, but Office is expensive and only autosaves to OneDrive, and I have a perfectly healthy grudge against OneDrive for failing to sync and losing 19k words of a WIP that I never got back.
Googleâs sync has never failed me, and the Google apps (at least for iPhone) arenât nearly as buggy and clunky as Microsoftâs. So today Iâm outlining the system I used for my upcoming fantasy novel with all the helpful pictures and diagrams. Maybe this wonât work for you, maybe you have something else, and thatâs okay! I refuse to pay for what I can get legally for free and sometimes Googleâs simplicity is to its benefit.
The biggest downside is that you have to manually input and update your data, but as someone who loves organizing and made all these willingly and for fun, I donât mind.
So. Letâs start with Google Sheets.
The Character Cheat Sheet:
I organized it this way for several reasons:
I can easily see which characters belong to which factions and how many I have named and have to keep up with for each faction
All names are in alphabetical order so when I have to come up with a new name, I can look at my list and pick a letter or a string of sounds I havenât used as often (and then ignore it and start 8 names with A).
The strikethrough feature lets me keep track of which characters I kill off (yes, I changed it, so this remains spoiler-free)
Itâs an easy place to go instead of scrolling up and down an entire manuscript for names Iâve forgotten, with every named character, however minor their role, all in one spot
Also on this page are spare names Iâll see randomly in other media (commercials, movie end credits, etc) and can add easily from my phone before I forget
Also on this page are my summary, my elevator pitch, and important character beats I could otherwise easily mess up, it helps stay consistent
*I also have on here not pictured an age timeline for all my vampires so I keep track of whoâs older than who and how well Iâve staggered their ages relative to important events, but itâs made in Photoshop and too much of a pain to censor and add here
On other tabs, I keep track of location names, deities, made-up vocabulary and definitions, and my chapter word count.
The Word Count Guide:
*3/30 Edit to update this chart to its full glory. Column 3 is a cumulative count. Most of what I write breaks 100k and it's fun watching the word count rise until it boils over.
This is the most frustrating to update manually, especially if you donât have separate docs for each chapter, but it really helps me stay consistent with chapter lengths and the formula for calculating the average and rising totals is super basic.
Not that all your chapters have to be uniform, but if you care about that, this little chart is a fantastic visualizer.
If you have multiple narrators, and this book does, you can also keep track of how many POVs each narrator has, and how spread out they are. I didnât do that for this book since itâs not an ensemble team and matters less, but I did for my sci-fi WIP, pictured below.
As I was writing that one, I had âscriptedâ the chapters before going back and writing out all the glorious narrative, and updated the symbols from âscriptedâ to âfinishedâ accordingly.
I also have a pie chart that I had to make manually on a convoluted iPhone app to color coordinate specifically the way I wanted to easily tell who narrates the most out of the cast, and who needs more representation.
â
Google Docs
Canât show you much here unfortunately but Iâd like to take an aside to talk about my âscene bitsâ docs.
Itâs what it says on the tin, an entire doc all labeled with different heading styles with blurbs for each scene I want to include at some point in the book so I can hop around easily. Whether they make it into the manuscript or not, all practice is good practice and I like to keep old ideas because they might be useful in unsuspecting ways later.
Separate from that, I keep most of my deleted scenes and scene chunks for, again, possible use later in a âdeleted scenesâ doc, all labeled accordingly.
When I designed my alien language for the sci-fi series, I created a Word doc dictionary and my own "translation" matrix, for easy look-up or word generation whenever I needed it (do y'all want a breakdown for creating foreign languages? It's so fun).
Normally, as with my sci-fi series, I have an entire doc filled with character sheets and important details, I just⊠didnât do that for this book. But the point isâyou can still make those for free on any word processing software, you donât need fancy gadgets.
â
I hope this helps anyone struggling! It doesnât have to be fancy. It doesnât have to be expensive. Everything I made here, minus the aforementioned timeline and pie chart, was done with basic excel skills and the paint bucket tool. I imagine this can be applicable to games, comics, what have you, it knows no bounds!
Now you have one less excuse to sit down and start writing.

Spreadsheet Autism: The Great Sharing
Because the internet is nigh unusable these days, with fourteen ads on every wiki page, I like to keep track of data related to my interests in my own personal google sheets. I thought some of them might be useful to others. So I'm sharing them. Several are still under construction in some way so copy what you can use and bookmark the rest if you want to wait for me to finish them lol. Also: I'm not a sheets expert, if anyone knows about how to make these more functional I'd love feedback
Klaus.xls - The Magnus Protocol/Archives
This one contains the original klaus.xls, the (approximate) english translation that other fans put together plus their notes, Bonzo's Number One Fan theory on how the CAT/R/DPHW works (I'm not sold on it but it's interesting), A categorization of each episode with notes, and a similar page on TMA episodes as I go through a rewatch. There's the data on the kids that were interviewed by the institute in the Protocol universe. It's got a page on the fears and their related TMA cults, avatars, etc as well. Go nuts kids.
Fire Emblem Stat Sheet
This is by far the most ridiculous one I have put time into. It tracks what fire emblem games I've played or owned and has planning sheets for each game as well as stats on different classes and units, planning sheets for pairings for the games where you can make them all have babies, etc. Copy what you want to use.
Mass Effect Lesbian Completionist Run
I made this so I could keep track of all the things you have to collect in Mass Effect 1, and also I was romancing Liara at the time rather than my usual Garrus (<3) hence the name. Just select all and un-cross out all the things I've crossed out if you want to keep track of the shit you have to find with the Mako without using a wiki
Palia
I'm only just starting with this one: keeps track of what each villager likes for gifts (on a permanent rather than weekly basis) and I'm slowly filling in trackers for the bugs and fish. Just finished one for the bundles.

Them: Why not use Google Sheets or MS Excel as a Database? Me: You are right. Go ahead and use it. Have a nice day. PS - You reach that stage in life where you just don't have any will or power left to fight stupidity. You know what? Forget the fight. It's about keeping my peace. There, I said it.

It is here! Version 2.0 of my fantastic Huurre's Fanfiction Reading Log!
What has changed? A lot!
Apps Scripts for doing some of the things for you, for example picking up fanfic's name and tag information from open fics in AO3. For more questions about this, especially relating scraping, please check my faq from my new website.
More comprehensive statistics with better logics.
For more detailed list of new features will be published here and in the website within next 30 hours because I'm already running late from the time I have given for the release. :'D
I have two versions of the file available:
Starting 2024:Â For anyone who has logged their reading during 2024 and wants to move their history from 2024 to this new file.
Starting 2025:Â For anyone who wants to start from the "clean table".
For full setup guide, please see the link below:
I've also set up Discord server for this. It is complete work in progress for now, but it is also in the place where you can suggest what direction to take it!
And with any problems, don't hesitate to contact me!
Now, I'll let you see and look for the file. Have fun!

Make google sheets automatically calculate your characterâs age!
I like using google sheets for story data like this and maybe you do too so hereâs a simple way to make your life a lot easier. Plus it automatically updates itself if you change one of the dates for whatever reason.
You can also have it tell you how old your character is on any date, or really, the difference in time between any two dates you want.
Formula and explanation is below the cut.
=DATEDIF(Startdate, Enddate, "Y") & " Years " & DATEDIF(Startdate, Enddate, "YM") & " Months " & DATEDIF(Startdate, Enddate, "MD") & " Days"
Basic format. What you change is in red and green. Hereâs an example:
=DATEDIF(B2,C2, "Y") & " Years " & DATEDIF(B2,C2, "YM") & " Months " & DATEDIF(B2,C2, "MD") & " Days"
You will probably skip B1, C1 because thatâs usually your header row, as well as column A because that will likely be where your characterâs name goes. Just copy and paste the whole formula into the first cell of a new column you want to spit out the age (date difference).
Delete all three instances of B2 and type in or click on the cell that has the start/birthdate for that character, then do the same with C2 but input the enddate.
If you just want the year and month, use this one.
=DATEDIF(Startdate, Enddate, "Y") & " Years " & DATEDIF(Startdate, Enddate, "YM") & " Months "
This one gives you just the year.
=DATEDIF(Startdate, Enddate, "Y") & " Years "
You can also erase â Years â at the end if you just want it to display 45 instead of 45 years
After you enter it in once, google sheets should guess the pattern (simply moving down the same column) and all you have to do is click formula cell once, then click and hold the bottom right corner where a dot will appear, and drag it down as far down the column as you need it to go.
Also, if you want your date columns to automatically format a specific way, do this:
Click the top of the column so that it highlights everything beneath it.
At the top hit Format
Hover over Number
Sidemenu will expand and towards the bottom click custom date and time formats
It will give you various options. Pick whichever one you like. You can fiddle with the up and down arrows by Month Day and Year to further customize it
Click apply
Now even if you type out âjan 3 1997â it will automatically change it to âJanuary 3, 1997â or â01-03-1997â or â1/3/97â etc.
You also might need to freeze your header row for it to work properly. Right click on the 1 next to the header row, and all the way at the bottom it says view more row actions, click freeze up to row 1.

Fanfiction GoodReads (But Not In The Way You're Thinking)
Hello. I am the type of person who has a spreadsheet for tracking the fanfiction I read throughout the year. I am not going to share that spreadsheet, simply because it has a rating system and I'm not going to make any authors feel bad, even accidentally.
I will, however, share this spreadsheet, which I made specifically to recommend fanfictions to people as I read them. Come follow along as I commit to Buddie insanity, with a few interludes from the BatFamily.

Currently trying to figure out how to make a calculator in LibreOffice that can take the "yes or no" answers of four questions and turn them into values for this horrendous formula I've mustered up:
(B1+G1(D1*C1)/P)+(B2+G2(D2*C2))=F
But I've never used spreadsheet formulas outside of basic adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing, etc., so using IF/ELSE statements in a LibreOffice Calc document terrifies me. I barely know any Swift from Apple's Swift Playgrounds, but I feel like I could write a better script in Swift than the monstrosity I'm about to make in LibreCalc.
