The nature of consciousness
Tumblr media
The nature of consciousness is a complex and fundamental topic in philosophy, neuroscience, and cognitive science. It refers to the subjective experience of being aware and having mental states, such as sensations, thoughts, and emotions. Consciousness is what makes it possible for us to perceive the world, think, reason, and have a sense of self-awareness.
There are various theories and debates surrounding the nature of consciousness. One key question is the "hard problem of consciousness," as coined by philosopher David Chalmers, which asks why and how subjective experiences arise from physical processes in the brain.
Some theories suggest that consciousness is an emergent property of complex information processing in the brain, while others propose that it may have a deeper, non-physical basis beyond the realm of neuroscience and the physical world. Some argue that understanding consciousness requires considering not just brain functions but also the broader context of our embodied experience and interactions with the environment.
Throughout history, different cultures and philosophical traditions have offered diverse perspectives on consciousness, ranging from spiritual and mystical interpretations to more materialistic and scientific viewpoints.
Despite significant advancements in neuroscience and cognitive studies, the nature of consciousness remains a topic of ongoing investigation and philosophical contemplation, raising profound questions about the nature of reality, the mind-body relationship, and the limits of human understanding.

(PDF) Between Rhetoric and Knowledge: A Philosophical Account of Metaphor from Aristotle to Nietzsche.
In its most essential definition – which is paradoxically also the most banal – metaphorcan be thought of as speech through images. However one understands metaphorization– whether as a substitution of words, a change at the predicative level, an embellishment,or a form of knowledge – it is clear that producing metaphors involves constructing an(implicit) analogy mediated through a relationship of similarity between elements. «Metaphor is the application of a strange term either transferred from the genusand applied to the species or from the species and applied to the genus, or from one speciesto another or else by analogy»2 «the tyranny of the word in the theory of meaning»7,
reduction to a linguistic ornament
ovement, in essence,is the fundamental characteristic of the “metaphorical genus”, enabling it to encompasslinguistic phenomena that differ greatly, well beyond the analogical transposition whichtoday we call metaphor. as a form of movement, the Aristotelian metaphor primarily serves asa disruptive element within a framework of pre-established relations – it disturbs existinglogical connections. The significant consequence here is that, when viewed in these terms, there's no metaphor that merely intervenes at the level of nouns alone; rather, it affectsthe discourse as a whole. «To affect just one word», writes Ricoeur, «the metaphor has todisturb a whole network by means of an aberrant attribution»1 In essence, how does the disruption of the pre-established orderextend beyond the bewildering effect produced on the listener when confronted with anunexpected organization of speech? Ricoeur's answer revolves around the idea that, asarticulated in Aristotle's Rhetoric, metaphor has the capacity to enhance understanding16.Firstly, Ricoeur argues that the dismantling of categorical classifications throughmetaphorical transposition is mirrored by the construction of a new logical classification.... In this sense, metaphorical subversion can be seen as «the complement of a logic ofdiscovery»17, namely the other side of the establishment of a new categorical order.Secondly, it can be inferred that metaphorization presides not only over a changing orderbut also over a new order established for the first time. Metaphor thus operates not justby introducing fragments into an existing system but also by constructing an entirely newone. «the ‘metaphoric’ that transgresses the categorial order alsobegets it»18
s summarized by George Lakoff and Mark Johnson, theprevailing stance among English empiricists is that «Words are viewed as having “propersenses” in terms of which truths can be expressed. To use words metaphorically is to usethem in an improper sense, to stir the imagination and thereby the emotions and thus tolead us away from the truth and toward illusion»24.
On one hand, there is an undeniablerejection of rhetoric, as expressed by John Locke in his Essay Concerning HumanUnderstanding (1690), where he states that rhetorical applications only serve «toinsinuate wrong ideas, move the passions, and thereby mislead the judgment», and aretherefore «perfect cheats»26. On the other hand, this criticism does not reject metaphorper se, but rather its abuses. In specific domains marked by probability rather than truth, forms of analogical language are perfectly legitimate. Locke himself acknowledges thatmetaphors can often lead to the discovery of truths and are sometimes the only aid at ourdisposal.
For Blumenberg, the genetic heritage of modern philosophy includes, onthe one hand, Descartes' Discourse on Method (1637) with its appeal for clarity anddistinction – the reference to the perfection of a totally transparent language «designed to capture the presence and precision of the matter at hand in well-defined concepts»27. Onthe other hand, however, within this same genetic line, one can also trace an oppositetendency to the «Cartesian teleology of logicization»28: this is the place of Vico and hispoetic logic, for which poetry and tropes are the natural and original modes that «the firstpoetic nations» relied on to explain reality29 opposed a Cartesian definition of rationality, this oppositionbrought with it a different conception of language, one broader than that of literal speechor the perfect coincidence between language and reality. Two key aspects stand out here: first, the increasingrecognition of metaphorization beyond mere rhetoric; and second, the discovery (orrediscovery) of metaphor as a fitting language for describing intersections between thecorporeal and, in a broader sense, the “spiritual”33 firstly, thecritique regarding the distinction between literal and figurative meanings of words;secondly, the idea that metaphor played a role in the genesis of language, stemming fromthe diminishing creative and imaginative scope of poetry; and finally, the assertion ofmetaphor as a form of knowledge, deemed the paramount “schema” for human orientationin the world. thefunction of metaphorization as undoubtedly cognitive rather than merely decorative35
Blumenberg's work isfirst and foremost a polemic against philosophy as «strictly “conceptual”» language, inwhich everything can be «superseded by logic»36. Within this perspective, metaphor would be nothing serious, merely a provisional covering destined to decay in the courseof history in the face of logical language.
metaphorology is, in fact, «an auxiliary discipline to philosophy as it seeks tounderstand itself from its history and to bring that history to living presence», whereasthe paradigm is a kind of schema that focuses on the historical developments ofmetaphorical language37.
wesuspend the explanatory model from myth to logos that philosophy has always embodied:that is to say, the passage from the pre-rational to reason, considered the birth ofphilosophical reflection. To embrace that model is to believe that myth is a «“pre-logical”phenomenon assigned to a primitive form of mental “development” that has beensuperseded and supplanted by more exact forms of understanding»39
«To draw attention to a philosopher'smetaphors» does not in the least mean to belittle them, as it would be if one were to praisea logician for their calligraphy; on the contrary, one must renounce «the principle thatwhereof one can speak only metaphorically, thereof one ought not to speak at all»40. Thisperspective aligns with Ricoeur's view on the categorical function of metapherein which,as we have seen, culminates in the extreme hypothesis that places metaphor at the heartof conceptual thought

i love hearing other people tell stories. i'm not always a body in the conversation, sometimes just an ear. i find eavesdropping a key talent to have when becoming a decent writer. take that as you will, along with everything else.

Sometimes in life friendships divide ...
Sometimes in life friendships divide ... Today I recieved an email; an email that made me smile. An email that without that past divide it would be impossible for each to have grown. 'A different scenario, a different motive, a different need, a different desire. All results in differing perspectives, differing course of actions ...' - Friendship Divide over time can be more positive than continuing to try to please or to say what the other person wants to hear ... - Friendship Divide allows for post reflective thinking, often months or years down the line: Revealing the other's strengths ... each own's weaknesses ... a better understanding of each others past life choices and decisions .. Today I am happy as I witness, reflect and embrace the others past strength I once saw as a weakness. Reciprocally the photo they have emailed  clearly depicts a following of my past lead: A differing methodology that allows them to push aside a long held grudge of parental and cultural expectations ... Now able to appreciate life differently. Our friendship never divided, it simply had to take a break in order to grow 💚😁

Meaning.
There’s a word for when words fail us: ineffible.
The OED defines it as “That which cannot be expressed or described in language; too great for words; transcending expression; unspeakable; unutterable; inexpressable.”

People who never see the good through the bad missed out on a lot of beautiful moments with beautiful people. Never able to appreciate the little they may get when all around them is bad. I think of all the emotions existing within human beings like a great sea. If you ever want to reach the surface to come onto land then first you have to fight through all the crashing waves. Sometimes they'll be too high to jump over and consume your tiny body. Other times if you find strength to fight through it then you'll find the walkout smooth and easy from there on out. Humans enjoy the intensity of the sea though not wanting the ease of simply strutting through life. What or how would we learn anything? To dip your soul back into the depths, so easy, the swim exhilarating and if you allow it the struggle is worthwhile.
