So I haven’t been in this fandom for YEARS but I just came across smth that always bugged me so ig I’m venting.

So the fandom has always been very critical of Odin but I always found it to be to a fault. I’ll generally see very exaggerated, not canonically supported takes on Odin that paint everything he ever did in the worst light possible. To the point where it’s just extremely boring to me. Odin being pure evil is infinitely less interesting than him being gray flawed-but-loving parent. Now I realise a huge chunk of the fandom would love a ‘Loki realizes Odin will never love him and gets over him’ narrative but I find it 1) personally extremely emotionally unsatisfying 2) waaaaay beyond a story that could ever be handled well and with enough nuance by the mcu 3) a bit too not complaint with the first movie and in general with the framing in all of these movies to truly stick the landing.

For example, ppl would often try to turn the information that was stated in canon that ‘Loki got adopted’ into ‘Loki got kidnapped’. The problem with that is that it’s solely based on headcanon. From a Watsonian perspective you can try to argue that Odin could be lying but from a Doylist perspective this is the only time we’re given information on that matter, and if the truth on such a crucial aspect of the story was different then it’d be extremely important to reveal the real truth to the audience at some point, but the writers never do that. Actually there’s a deleted scene found in the script where Loki reveals to Laufey that he’s his son, where Laufey explicitly agrees that he abandoned Loki, calls him weak and ‘a bastard son’. Now this is a deleted scene so it’s not canon, ig we could say it’s soft canon, but either way it gives us insight into the writers’ original intent behind writing the whole script including the vault scene and it presents the more fleshed out version of the story, where such a crucial information as Loki’s origin is indeed double-checked by Loki with the ‘original source’.

Next matter, the writers never thought through the story nearly as much as the fans do. The worldbuilding, history and lore of this world are next to non-existent. We don’t know anything about the Jotun culture, so who knows maybe leaving someone of royal blood in a temple was done for their own protection or maybe it was a sacrifice to their gods or smth, or maybe it has no meaning at all and he was simply left behind anywhere when others were fleeing. Similarly we don’t know anything about Asgardian customs so maybe the party at the end of the movie was smth disrespectful toward Loki’s recent presumed death or maybe it was exactly how they do it. We’re just left to either take the framing at face value even tho the framing is sometimes noticeably faulty or come up with headcanons.

And speaking of that party scene, along with weird assumptions about Asgardian culture I’ve also seen weird reading of Odin’s behavior. Now Anthony Hopkins clearly never cared about this role and in most scenes he barely even moves so I know that probs doesn’t help the perception that Odin the character doesn’t care about what’s happening around him, but we also do get some things out of him like this:

He's shown alone and isolated from the rest, staring blankly at the Bifrost where everybody thinks Loki died and it seems he can barely speak, but that somehow translates into ultimate proof that he’s happy/indifferent that Loki is gone, like ??? Absolutely bizarre takes. I would often see ppl scrutinize Odin’s behavior like this like they’re body language/human behavior “experts” or whatever, as tho it’s not the case that all the characters often appear to be underacting/underreacting when intercut with Loki’s drastic and often very realistic looking displays of emotion. And even with that in mind there’s always enough obvious cinematic language used in those scenes that you can clearly tell the authorial intent. Like you’d think somber music and sad faces and staying away from the party, in contrast to all the partying guests, would make it clear enough that Loki’s family is mourning. But ig they’re not mourning visibly enough for some ppl’s liking.

There’s more scenes like that that really convey the love between all the different family members, but then we also get these confusing scenes like ‘your birthright was to die’ or ‘am I not your mother’ or ‘That hope no longer exists to protect you. You betray me and I will kill you.’ that just kinda happen but then nothing ever gets explained or resolved. Unfortunately it’s likely the writers just think there’s nothing wrong with this kind of behavior and that the characters were justified/right in saying those things. So the fandom’s stuck not being able to just ignore the worst of it, and for me also not being able to ignore all the framing and writing that conveys real love within the family that I want to root for.

In broader strokes I would say the first movie is the most defining for the franchise and the characters and that’s the one that has me rooting for Odin and Loki’s relationship. Then came TDW and it was the real beginning of the end, not TR. This movie was the first that tried to simply sweep under the rug all the interesting drama the previous movies built. They find a way to get rid of Frigga, they get rid of Odin and rush his arc to its end (originally with no intention to bring him back ever again, according to interviews) and they also tried to get rid of Loki for good and rush his arc to its end. Leaving Thor free from having to deal with all the family drama ever again that ig powers that be decided no one wanted to see, until changes were made. With the third movie continuing to axe everything that’s left from the Thor franchise and continuing the task of writing out Thor’s family members, bringing Odin and Loki back, giving them both more flattering conclusions and then killing them off again. And what a pity cos the bones for great arcs for these characters are all there. If only there was a single cohesive vision for the franchise that allowed for continuous cohesive arcs throughout the trilogy.

Anyway, ig I still had some mourning to do for all that development that never happened and that at this point we’re way beyond ever getting.

Sorry to ask all of a sudden, but I've been having this thing where whenever I'd go to write, like I'd open the Google docs page and I'd get ready to write I freeze. I get this fear. Have you ever had that before?

but those r the days that i really force myself to write. bc i know that i gotta push thru it, and that just the act of making myself write on the days i don’t want to or feel really “blocked” or uninspired will make me a better writer. and obviously, it doesn’t gotta be that srs for you haha. u don’t have to be good at something to enjoy doing it ! :) and never let anyone tell you otherwise.

but for me, i love writing and i like being able to look back and see my own progress as as writer.

so yeah, it can be scary sometimes, but what’s the worse than can happen? you write something and you don’t like it? so what? u write something that you like and someone else doesn’t? you could be the most delicious apple in the entire world and there’s gonna be some fucker out there being like ‘kay but i like oranges better’ lasldfkjsd

and literally some of my favorite one-liners come from pieces that i really wasn’t feeling in the beginning. and MOST of the time, even with the fics i post here, i’ll write the entire thing, and feel like i got in ONE good line. maybe two. u__u but i had to get through the entire rest of the fic to get to that one or two good lines.

in the immortal words of azumane asahi “just one point, i think we can get that” — so think of it like this, you just gotta put one word down, and then another one. one sentence, and then another one. and if you don’t like it, don’t worry about it right now. run with it. see where it goes. and if you really don’t like it at the end, don’t post it, delete it, print it out and burn it and scatter the ashes into the wind. but don’t let the fear of not being able to make something “good” stop you from just doing the thing. <;3

Da3dm sweetheart, no one writes the same. I guarantee you there are people out there who write the way you do and you just don’t know it.

There is literally no one right way to create or write or anything. Just multiple ways that work better for some than others but still produce incredible results. If it works for you, run with it.

And I commend you for not deleting lines👏👏👏 that’s hard! Means you got it to fit and flow exactly how you want it too and like it. Sometimes I’ll write a line but save it for later because it doesn’t fit the tone of the story lol.

And again, just step back from the au for a bit. I’ve checked the poll so here’s an update: mystery au is winning by a landslide atm. So considering the way it’s looking, you’ll probs be doing more mystery Au soon.

Again, forcing it won’t do you any good. I kid you not, Jornos is a fic that got started and I wanted to work on but had no idea how to start it. I knew what I wanted to happen, but not the beginning. I soon started a new fic and when I remembered it again, I went off! Now it’s a steady growing chapter story. (With many many many breaks because brain goes brrrrr) point is, I didn’t force it and as result when it did come, it flows naturally.

Try not to be so hard on yourself. You’re a talented writer and we all do things in different ways. There’s no need to to force yourself when you know your hearts in something else.

It’ll get there eventually.

I really just want to lose my virginity already. Not even because I want to have sex necessarily. I have so much anxiety about sex, and at this point I just want to do it and get it over with so I can stop thinking about it so much. 

And I know what people say on here. Virginity is just a social construct, go at your own pace, etc. etc., but I can’t help it anymore. Like I said, I’m not even that interested in sex, but it would be so nice to get it over with so I can stop having all of this anxiety about it. 

At this point, I don’t really know anyone irl I’d like to have sex with. I either don’t know them well enough, or I don’t see them in any way other than platonic. It sucks because I know I probably could have lost it by now if I just had someone I felt comfortable with, but I don’t. 

For those who did actually read this, does anyone else feel the same? And if y’all did have sex, was it actually worth it, or did it not really matter that much in the long run? I just need some advice rn I guess.

hey i think you mentioned ages ago that you don't know how to write an ending note for the first chapter of a AO3 fic without it showing up when you post the next chapter and disappearing from the first? if so i can help with that! you prob set it as the end note for the WHOLE fic, so it shows up wherever that currently is. if you copy it and delete it from that section, and then edit just the first chapter instead of the whole fic, you should be able to put it in that chapter's end note.

• Will be the type to play hide and seek without telling me, so I’d just be freaking out thinking he’s lost for hours

• This man will bark at me. End of discussion

• Probs has some secret furry memorabilia that he keeps hidden under his bed, but will pull it out and ask if I can play it with him

• 100% will teach me how to take nice monochromatic photos, even going as far as to let me use his camera

• He’s gonna blast Jazz music through his speakers and critic me on my classical music knowledge

• Will make me cry, by chasing me around in the furry costume I mentioned before. And then will laugh when my ass trips and falls

• I’ll be confused if he’s trying to flirt with me or not for majority of the time

• This man's level of physical affection will drive me crazy, will literally wrap himself around my leg while I’m trying to walk

• Will sass me to the point I’ll genuinely have to reconsider all my life decisions , and self esteem

• Honestly the one I’ll get along with most on the list tho, I feel like he’s knows all the tea about everyone

• 100% will physically tap his mouth shut after the first twenty minutes

• Competition to see who has a fatter ass( he’d obviously win)

• Will definitely break something expensive and brush it under the rug then blame me after for it

• The type to have a twelve step skincare routine and will literally gag if I tell him it’s not necessary

• I’ll need at least 2 Tylenol’s and a solid 36 hours of sleep to recover at babysitting him

Namjoon

Price: $20/hour (plus an extra $10 every time he breaks something)

• Damage deposit ahead of time for any property broken

• Also damage deposit for emotional distress after this man completely outsmarts me in literally every subject

• Majority of the time will be spent with either him explaining philosophical ideas he’s read in books or care instructions for his plants

• Will throw hands when I jokingly say I might accidentally kill his plants. Key word being jokingly

• We’re gonna spend a minimum 3 hours looking for his airpods

• Probs will get into a insightful debate about aliens and the meaning of life, is definitely not gonna make me feel stupid if I say something dumb

• He’ll definitely help me with my homework, I might even owe him back some money by the end for tutoring me

• Is gonna be the most responsible one out of the bunch to actually prepare himself for bed. Do a proper skincare routine before playing some light rain sounds and knocking out

• Just Dance will be on for literally hours

• Will genuinely throw hands with me if we don’t get mega superstar ON EVERY SINGLE SONG

• His energy levels high key intimidate me, I know for a fact I won’t be able to keep up

• Probably will let me have aux and sing along to whatever music I play, maybe even teach me to the rap for daydream

• FASHION SHOWS, dude his closet is so incredible, will be the type to let me leave with a souvenir

• I just know he gives good pep talks, like whatever’s on my mind he’ll sit and talk about with me. Babysitting will turn into a makeshift therapy session

• If he’s in a good mood might let me paint his nails matching colours with mine

• Old school Disney movies for sure, especially with chocolate chip cookies. I’m envisioning Hercules, Mulan and the Princess and the Frog , he likes his soulful soundtracks

• The type to fall asleep on the couch during the Disney movie marathon, but will pout if I try to turn off the screen. Will for sure snuggle into his blanket like an adorable little bean

• Easiest one to babysit off the list , no doubt about it

• The ten dollars is literally just to cover food and drinks, no actual payment is needed for my boy yoongles

• The type to sit me down and show me what track he’s been working on , maybe even ask for input if he’s stuck

• This man’s a literal angel, I know for a fact he will try his best not to laugh at my horrible attempts of rapping Daechwita

• Worst part probably would be if I disturbed him while he was napping or working, definitely would be a little worried when homeboy turns silent and gives me that death stare

• Will steal my phone to play piano tiles

• The longest rants about capitalism and government corruption, like full university style professor lectures

• Will be prepared to fight me if I even dare mention my plan to kidnap and marry Hobi

• Probably will fall asleep in some random spot in the housw, so I’ll bring him a blanket and some water so that at least he’s somewhat comfy in whatever weird position he passes out in

• Wouldn’t hesitate to babysit him again, or even just hang out whenever

Seokjin

Price: $25/hour

• I already know we’re gonna have a roast off over who’s the prettiest and my ego will get hurt multiple times by this man when I lose

• Probably will try to teach me the Super Tuna dance, and then judge me if I fucked up the choreo , will force us to do it on repeat until it’s satisfactory

• Definitely will offer to help cook and will make incredible food which is super sweet and helpful

• Will sass the shit out of me, especially if I do something he doesn’t like or tell him no

•Dad jokes from start to finish, every 5 minutes on a loop

• Will throw RJ at me full force if I say anything to piss him off, and then be more concerned if RJ is hurt then if I am

• 100% will be the type to pull the “let me do it” for every little thing even though I’m supposed to be the one babysitting him

• If I cook will say my ramens dry and likely fake throw up, dramatic ass

• At the end of the night I will definitely end up tucking him in, while he protests that he’s a grown man and doesn’t need to be tucked in. (But the whole time he’s stuttering with red ears because he secretly loves being taken care of)

• All in all a wonderful experience, he’s already organizing a fishing trip for the summer
