It’d gotten kind of late and Hobie still wasn’t home. You figured he was still out patrolling. Ignoring the annoying ass voice in the back of your head telling you something was wrong, you decided to clean and cleanse your home instead.

Excitedly, you dance to the large speaker Hobie bought you for Christmas a few weeks ago. Connecting your phone to the large machinery and playing your favorite Neo-Soul/R&B playlist, you start cleaning the kitchen.

You’d gone through the whole house and cleaned it from top to mf bottom. Doing breathing exercises to ease your mind before smoke cleansing the house with rosemary and garden sage. The moment you put out your bundles and light an incense stick you hear the front door of the houseboat creak open.

Then you heard the familiar sound of heavy boots and clinking metal belts make their way into the back of the house towards you. “There you are” Hobie says lowly with a smile on their face, leaning against the well loved and worn paint of ya’ll bedroom doorframe.

setting down the incense holder on your shared dresser you run to the tall lanky boy, who waits for you with open arms, squeezing him and taking a deep breath enjoying the smell of his cologne mixed with the cold night air. Letting out a relieved sigh you pull back and look him in the eyes. “Thought I’d die before yo ass got home.” Playfully slapping their chest and turning around with their hand in yours, sitting him down on your bed and gracing a soft kiss onto their forehead.

“Fuck off” laughing he pulls you towards him by the hips. God, that smile made you lose your mind. he wraps his arms around your waist and rests his cheek against your stomach. You could tell they was trying hard to stay awake. You knew he missed you and it was showing with how tightly he was holding you.

“Hey.” You murmur to them. Cradling his face in your hands gently. He hums in response with closed eyes that drag open to look at you. “I missed you baby” his tired smile fills your stomach with butterflies. How could you have gotten so lucky as to be able to go to sleep and wake up with such a beautiful person every night?

8. something canon did right: The entire arc of HZD is masterful and perfect and it’s been a long time since I’ve been that gripped by a mystery in any media. It was always going to be hard to top, but I would love if the next game reverted back to that kind of storytelling vs the “doing too much” trend of HFW

9. a thing i'm proud of creating for the fandom: A hard choice, but I think I have to pick Love Games just because it was such a labor of love between myself and @sorbetowl​. Hi. So I really like Arthurian mythology. To an deeply concerning and obsessive point. This has led me to consume a lot of Arthurian media, and thus I figured I would give you this. Ratings of all the Arthurian media (up until now) that I’ve consumed.

This is going to be a doozy.

Books!

The Mabinogion. 9/10. It’s less Arthurian mythology and more proto-arthurian. But it’s welsh as shit and goes hard.

Historia Regum Britanniae. 6/10. 10/10 for iconicness. 2/10 because it’s geoffrey of fucking monmouth. This mother fucker cannot write and basically is responsible for the englishfication of arthurian mythology and eventually the frenchification of arthurian mythology. So I rightfully hate his ass.

Knight of the Cart. 6.5/10. 10/10 for iconicness. 3/10 because if I could accuse a man of cultural appropriation who’s dead and didn’t really commit cultural appropriation, I would pick Chretien de Troyes. You’re too french and too annoying and can’t even do chivalric romance well because the french are actually terrible at it. Like go read avicenna you illiterate french peasant.

The Vulgate Cycle. 5/10. It’s good. It’s iconic. It’s french.

Bulfinch’s Mythology. 4/10. It gets what the basics of arthurian mythology is, but fails to understand the actual point of Arthurian mythology and what it’s trying to do and it’s function.

The High King. 8/10. Such a good reference book on Arthurian mythology and the history behind the name and the title and how he came to be.

The Mists of Avalon. 5/10 it’s a solid retelling, and I like the arguably feminist stance it takes. I’m knocking 3 points because of quality, and 2 points because it isn’t gay, and I think the author got a little confused about what Celtic is. Like they clearly know it’s wales, but they seem to have gone for the bad folk etymology that Morgan le Fay/Morgana is somehow related to the Morrigain historically. Which she’s not. Also because the author should’ve gone full ass in on the anti-colonialist messaging. And neither of them did.

Grailquest. 3/10. It’s just… not good enough. Also for some odd reason it’s in Ancient Greece because a spell went wrong? So I think the author was just trying to make it enjoyable for youn boys.

Avalon High (the book). 4/10. It’s just not good enough.

Merlin’s Blade. 1/10. Literally the worst. Merlin is Christain and weird as shit in this. I would give it a 0/10, but I’ll give it kudos for having a blind MC. Even though he keeps talking to God about it and it sucks.

Le Morte d’Arthur. 8/10. One of the og’s. Honestly of the better cycles in the Arthurian canon. You can, and will, read worse than this one.

Legendborn Cycle. 10/10. Perfect. Should literally be added to the actual Arthurian canon. I don’t care if this is an unfinished YA book series that started coming out in 2019. Y’all are fools if you haven’t read this and I fucking laugh at for calling yourself an Arthurian Mythology fan if you haven’t. Literally laugh.

The Once and Future King. 8/10. So I love this book. That being said, this was written in the 40s by a british white man. Like… it fails me. And that’s where those two points have gone. A fun fact is that this book wasn’t published during WW2 because the author really hated war.

Magic Tree House. 6/10. Good. Could be better. I deeply appreciate that the entire series is Morgana and Merlin fighting for a fucking tardis treehouse. That alone makes this worth reading.

Idylls of the King. 0/10. Literal colonial propaganda. Fuck you Tennyson.

The Fall of Arthur. Like a 5/10. Unfinished. Not Tolkien’s better work.

The Green Knight (Tolkien Translation). 5/10. LISTEN I LOVE TOLKIEN BUT THSI ISN’T A GOOD TRANSLATION. He uses such estoric language sometimes that it shouldn’t be counted! As a fucking! Translation!

Camelot Rising. 4/10. Idc what you say and if it’s feminist. It’s not good enough for a higher rating. It also should’ve been gay and thus has been docked points

Once and Future. 4/10. I really really really wanted to love this book. It’s a queer arthurian retelling where arthur is sapphic and arabic. But it so deeply reeks of white queer people who make being queer a central part of their identity to avoid talking about queerness. On top of which, for some odd reason, the like… five thousand year old sorcerer seems to struggle with the concept of genderfluid people to me. Which makes no sense. It’s not good. It’s really bad. I’m giving it 4 stars for at least being gay and not outright offensive. It’s also a decent adaptation

Sword Stone Table. 10/10. IT’S AN DIVERSE ARTHURIAN SHORT STORY ANTHOLOGY. IF YOU DON’T LIKE ONE YOU CAN READ THE NEXT ONE. EXCEPT THEY’RE ALL EXCELLENT.

Once and Future (2019 comic). 7/10. YEAHHHH FUCK BREXIT. It’s just a good comic by my favourite comic book writer. Mr kieron gillen (not to be mistaken with karen gillan).

Gails: Quests of the Dawn. 5/10. I love Neil Gaiman but this short story collection reads like a roster of the white men of SFF. Which makes it mediocre compared to Sword Stone Table. Also OSC.

Plays + Operas + Music

Spamalot. 7/10. Not as good as the movie. Two extra points were given for Tim Curry as King Arthur. Yes. Local queer icon Tim Curry gets two points by his lonesome.

Camelot (Philippa Soo Broadway). 5/10. I love Philippa Soo. She does a really good job in this role. But she looses all the camp of the original versions.

Tristain und Isolde (Wagner). 3/10. I’m not a fan of wagner.

High Noon Over Camelot. 1/10. This is a bad retelling and I dislike the Mechanisms music. It’s also obnoxiously white.

Movies + TV Shows

Camelot (the movie). 7/10. It’s camp as fuck and there’s a song called the lusty month of may. Which is just about fucking. And i think that’s actually perfect.

Avalon High (the movie). 7/10. When I tell you that this movie rewired my brain and truly ignited my passion for Arthurian mythology? I mean it. This set me down a hole for years. Sure, is it gay? No. Is Arthur a girl in this though? Yes. And that makes it better than the book

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword. 2/10. I fucking hate this movie so fucking much oh my god. I DON’T CARE WHAT PEOPLE SAY IT’S NOT GOOD. THIS IS A BAD ADAPTATION.

The Green Knight. 9/10. I loved this movie! Weird as shit. But I did really love this movie. And Dev Patel is hot.

The Last Legion. 3/10. It’s a fine movie. But it’s a 3/10 as an arthurian adaptation because while I appreciate the attempt at historicity. It’s actually just bad at that.

The Sword in the Stone. 8/10. It’s less racist than the book which gets it points. It’s also not as *good* as the book.

Shrek 3. Both a 9/10 and a 2/10. Terrible Arthurian adaptation. But Shrek movies are so fun anyways.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail. 9/10. Unironically one of the best Arthurian adaptations ever. It’s so funny and ads and discuss the canon in a fantastic way.

Knightriders. 8/10. It’s a Romero film, who lowkey *invented* the zombie film. But it’s also… anti-capitalist? And gay? Also trying to not be racist? (Trying. It’s the 80s. But p successful). They are also REN FAIRE ACTORS ON MOTORCYCLES.

The Sorcerer’s Apprentice (2010). 4/10. I like this movie, but it’s, say it with me, a terrible Arthurian adaptation.

Transformers: the Last Knight. 2/10. I will not speak further on this.

The Kid Who Would Be King. 6/10. Bad movie. Decent adaptation with fun characters who understand their point in this story.

Merlin. 9/10. Honestly a really good Arthurian adaptation that understands it doesn’t need to be source accurate. Also while it doesn’t commit to the gay. It’s still gay-tinged.

Cursed. 5/10. It’s not good enough to be more. It’s just not good enough. But I do appreciate the diversity and Nimue as the MC.

Stargate SG-1. 0/10. Racism. I hate stargate because it’s just so obnoxiously racist.

The Librarians. 3/10. It’s not a great arthurian adaptation and it drops all the arthurian bits after a while. But it is a 9/10 tv show.

Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia. 6/10. Solid Arthurian adaptation. I just think it was a bit weak and put them in there to give credence to it’s magic things and system without having to justify them further to the watchers. Which makes this not really arthurian.

Fate/stay night. 8/10. I haven’t watched any of this. But Arthur is a woman who was called a man in this version because of sexism. And she’s kinda fruity. So that gives this an 8/10 in my book.

Hellboy. 4/10. I like Hellboy a lot. It’s just their Arthurian deal is just a single lone sad merlin.

Quest for Camelot. 2/10. It’s really just not worth watching.

A Kid in King Arthur’s Court. 1/10. I don’t even hate this one. It’s just so painfully mediocre it’s amazing.

Legends of Tomorrow. 7/10. It’s a really really good show and I like that it’s implied that King Arthur is Sara Lance who is just here to fuck.

Pendragon. 3/10. I appreciate it’s structure having read this entire game. It’s just… not got a great structure.

Runescape. 5/10. It’s fine. It’s just fine. It’s iconic. And it’s fine.

Sonic and the Black Knight. 1/10. Because I do actually have something against this. I hate the fact that Sonic is King Arthur and thus will be cuckooed. It causes me physical pain to think of this.

And that is literally every Arthurian adaptation I have consumed to date. I plan on reading Spear after I read this indigenous anti-colonial dragon fantasy book. I’m wary of Spear because although it’s gay, the author set it in ireland. And arthurian mythology isn’t fucking irish. Have respect and do what the rest of us do and set your arthurian adaptation on a different fucking continent.

Loving George is so easy.

It requires no effort at all. Loving George is like the sway of flowers, the chill of wind. Like humid summers and the tang of an orange, like seamless shirts and endless laughter. It is a nostalgic movie late at night, something that never grows dull, never fades away.

But being in love with George is so, so hard.

Oof. Well there are certain fics I have worked really hard on, but I feel the notable example does get its fair share of credit and love and discussion (a big thank you to everyone who has read and engaged with me <3 ). But I guess I put a lot of work into An Apprenticeship, Of Brick and of Bone, Bad Moon a-Risin' too , and will always appreciate anything people want to pick up on and come and chat to me about on those. (I mean, the same is true for any fic ever, quite honestly lol – but) Those fics I’d say do also sort of have some subtlety or backstory to them that doesn’t get explicitly laid out in the fic, particularly An Apprenticeship, so there might be some fun things to talk about there if anyone is picking up on any Vibes they want to share.

Ok Edit: I wrote that whole answer out and then I went to grab the links and realize all those fics actually have not too bad interaction in comparison to my others lol. (thank you again, y’all <3). So, if this question is meant to be about the fics that get the least interaction, here’s something kinda fun: I sorted my stats page by hits in reverse, and in keeping with my weird experience that Holiday Themed Fics Seem to get Less Interest, these three tmrss fics have the lowest hit count. Three Cryptids Walk into a Bar Northern Crossing I Like you a Latte   (After that it's drabbles, which seem to make sense drawing less traffic to me, for some reason, and then a New Year's themed fic 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️) As for Die Hard, the lowest hit count that goes to a full fic and not just a drabble, is this one: The Weather Outside is Frightful

Hmmm. I have a pretty big vocabulary. Is that a compliment? Lol It’s *Nerdy* with a capital N, how about that? Lol. There’s a lot of nerdy semi-obscure word play, reference humour, and I fall in love with the characters and get obsessed with every minute little detail about them. So if you love obsessing over nerdy details too, my fic just might be for you! lol

This is a sneaky wife-scolding moment, @dream0fspring, and frankly it’s fair. I mean the short answer is, I don’t. OP is right though, that writers definitely should. We have talked a lot about this in DMs (because you put up with so much from me <3) but at least in terms of my WIP, I tend to celebrate the success of completing the hard work of posting a chapter by rewarding myself with more work – ie. setting the deadline for the next one. I also have a tendency to set my deadlines by estimating how long I will likely take to finish a chapter, and then trying to shorten that timeline as much as possible because faster is better, and working comfortably and at my own pace would be lazy and somehow feels like a ‘failure’. To ‘hustle’ or something, idk. This is a really important question though, because I have learned a lot about myself and my workstyle and the importance of motivation and self care through writing, in ways that apply to my life outside of writing - how I approach workload in my rl job or life admin tasks and responsibility, etc. I think it’s something we could all benefit from examining in ourselves from time to time. Are we happy with the way we treat ourselves in terms of effort and reward for the different kinds of labour that come into our lives each day, and would we be happy to see somebody else, say a friend or loved one, treat themselves the same way? It’s a great question. Afraid I’d have to throw it back out to tumblr though – does anybody have ideas on how they celebrate publishing to share?

📡why is writing and sharing your writing important for fandom?

Most of you reading this will probably know that I have a little collection on my ao3 of random snippets I call Snickits, bearing the Henry Van Dyke quote “The woods would be very silent if no birds sang there except those that sang best”, it’s about that fear of the vulnerability of putting ourselves into something and then offering it up to the world but I think that’s part and parcel of sharing one’s gifts. Obviously if we all gave into that voice that tells us ‘but mine isn’t as good/as big/as angsty/as funny/as worldbuilt/as proficient in English as xx’s fic’ and let it be a reason that we didn’t share it, there would be no content and there wouldn’t be a fandom at all. <3 Incidentally, (off topic, but hey this is already long af), there’s no fandom without readers, either, and this is something I’ve been seeing a lot of chat about lately with comments too. Comments and feedback are what let writers, or songbirds, know you heard and appreciated their song. They are super important to keeping fandom being a thing and a big reason many writers write here instead of going off to make money on original fiction. I see so many people say the reason they don’t comment is because other people’s comments intimidate them or seem smarter or more ‘creative’. That just breaks my heart to know somebody had a reaction to something someone wrote, was touched by something they created, and wanted to let them know but then *didn’t* because they felt themselves unworthy. (And then the image of the author on the other end, posting to the sound of crickets and thinking the same thing.) If anyone is a nervous commenter and reading this, please know it takes basically no more than a ‘omg!’, ‘this was my favourite chapter so far’ or ‘haha the moment xx happened cracked me up!’ to make a writers’ entire day. <3

🤲what do YOU get out of writing?

Is it weird that this question stumped me so much I left it to last? I feel like I spoke to this a bit in my last reply to this ask game but there are SO many reasons people write. Escapism, activism, therapy, self expression, to inform, to entertain. I guess for me it’s a bit of the first and last. It’s a hobby, and it’s the one I chose because it fits the best. Words have always been sort of my one thing I feel like I *have* as it were – as a skill, to offer to people, to make an impact with etc. We all have our skills and strengths and interests and words and language have always been one for me. (Don’t know if it’s related but I’m an auditory learner and will remember everything I hear too, which I understand isn’t all that common lol). I’m also introverted, so I’m far more likely to sit down at a keyboard and think about what I want to say than to get up on a stage and shout it out to a crowd (though yes I get up on a stage and do that set to music sometimes lol, shhh, humans don’t have to make sense).  I guess writing is my way of feeling competent and effective at something, and fanfic (and feedback) is a way I feel like I reach people and offer them, and the world, something. I know I already mentioned that as a character driven writer, I find the depth to which I imagine different characters with different personalities reacting to the circumstances in my stories is a way I’ve come to feel like I have a better understanding of personalities different to my own, and it lets me have a better appreciation for, love of, and patience with, the people around me in every day life, too.<3 Writing is amazing!

☯️how do you think engaging with each other through tumblr, twitter, comments, kudos, creates healthy fandom experiences? How do you deal with that if you're not a social person/experience social anxiety?

Hmm. I feel like there’s kind of two different situations here. Comments and kudos are something I associate with Ao3 (I’m not sure if they have kudos on other platforms like ff.net or wattpad) and quite specific to writing, and I think engaging with authors on their stories to show that you liked it with kudos or that it made you think or feel or simply enjoy something, with a comment, are super important motivators to keep writers writing, and keep fandom being a welcoming space that embraces and encourages new writers starting out and fosters opportunities for them to explore and practice and build their skill. But then, tumblr and twitter are social media that can be used for fandom interactions with the people you meet who share your interests, but can be quite separate from writing, or at least they are in my experience. As a writer I don’t always get to engage with fan artists, and that’s one of the big plusses for me with tumblr, because I can’t do art at all and I really respect and admire fanartists hardcore. I don’t really use twitter. I’m intrigued to see it here being touted as a space for healthy fandom interaction when it has the reputation for basically being the opposite lol. I’m a highly drama-allergic person so I guess it’s possible that arguments and fanwank and ship wars are perceived by some people as a ‘healthy’ way to express things, and to each their own I suppose. But while I find respectful, calm discussions in fandom as intellectually stimulating and fascinating as the next fan, I do feel that so often that isn’t the goal, so much as finding a fight to have. And the problem there is negativity breeds negativity. I'm a firm believer that car horns ought to be made obsolete because they don't do what they were intended for anymore, which is warn somebody that another vehicle is coming around a bend on a one-lane dirt road. They're just a big loud 'fuck you' button these days, and hearing it directed at you can plant a seed of negativity that can set off your whole day and definitely makes it very tempting to hit that button on the next person that bothers you, and so it spreads out and spirals. Fandom wank feels like that to me. It might *feel* like ‘venting’ lets things out, but therapeutic psychology actually tells us distracting yourself with something positive is a just as effective, if not moreso, way to feel better without focusing on the negative – and definitely without passing it on to others in a chain reaction of yelling and fist flailing lol. I perceive fandoms that embrace a lot of opposition and ‘warring’ as actually toxic rather than healthy, and more as things that will wind me up when I came here with my leisure time to let go and relax, rather than as ways to ‘get things out’. I’m also concerned that behaviour toxifies a space, and can put negative thoughts into people’s heads that weren’t there to begin with and didn’t need to be there at all (it’s all fiction at the end of the day lol) when they might have logged on to the internet feeling perfectly fine. So I’ve never been one to go looking for an argument, even if I’m feeling some kinda way on any given day. And from what I’ve heard, that means twitter isn’t really the place for me lol.

As for having social anxiety – yeah I do. But funnily enough interacting over the internet mostly takes care of that for me. I’m far less nervous when I have time to sit and think what I want to write out and say to somebody, than I am when I feel put on the spot in person. Not to mention the added option of anonymity on the internet. So that’s how I deal with it lol, it’s probably a large part of the whole reason I’m here using it!

Well, I’m three chapters away from finishing The Blood Culmination . That is definitely feeling pretty momentous after 5 years (omg).  And then, the sky’s the limit for what I want to work on next, I guess! Which is pretty damned exciting. Like maybe 10% scary, 90% exciting. Or 90% scary, 10% exciting *insert Owen Wilson in Armageddon meme here*.

I do have my ideas, as you know.😈 Maybe I should take a poll on what I should write next lol. Something spicy, mayhaps? Maybe the next big thing won’t even be fanfic at all… !!
