Reminiscing- Crocodile x GN!Reader

Here's another addition to my Spy event! I wanted to try writing a bit of a chiller vibe and of course needed to include my favorite warlord here. I've been craving more fics with him

There were the golden years. There were the memories of battles, spats, fights, and triumphs. Who didn't like remembering those times?

Crocodile was a successful man. Many people knew that. He had businesses that vied for his attention, money that never left him without, people always ready to do whatever he needed whenever. He didn't need or want much. Not anymore at least.

There were times, though, that Crocodile wanted to get away. He needed space, a breather from all the demands and luxuries. And he did know where to find it.

There weren't that many spies who could go out and retire from the life of crime-fighting and intense strategizing. Most kept pushing until they were put out of the game--or life. But there were even fewer who decided to stay in the real world instead of disappearing to a personal hideaway to be paranoid of vengeful descendants or hide to silence their night terrors.

But you were different.

You couldn't completely abandon the life, so you found yourself running a late night bar where you could still see the brightness of new recruits and weathered looks of your old peers. It didn't matter who stopped by because this was a place for drinks and story-sharing. It didn't matter if with a friend or foe.

So Crocodile knew he could come by for a drink, and when you were the only one there--sweeping while humming to a tune, he knew it was going to be a good night.

"Crocy," the way you said that stupid nickname with endearment instead of taunting already started the memory wheel for the older man.

You went behind the bar and reached for an aged bottle of cognac which was his favorite. You took out two crystal glasses and gently plopped in the intricate spherical ice. Croco,dile rested his chin on his propped hand--watching you pour the liquid.

"Good evening to you too Flower," he chuckled.

You placed the drink in front of him and leaned forward. "Oh jeez, that name reminds me of when we first met."

Crocodile brought the glass to his lips and grinned. "Ah, when you first tried to kill me, I remember that."

You shrugged as you sipped. "In my defense, you were trying to overtake a country's department of defense."

"It's was a business opportunity." Crocodile half-defended. "But gosh you were so ruthless. I probably could remember that punch if I think about it."

You rolled your eyes. "You had three gunmen on me." you placed your drink down and sighed. "Where have the years gone? That was my first time being told to retreat, you know? I was pretty confident I was going to end your life that night."

Crocodile took out his cigar and snickered. "And I keep telling you there were five gunmen, so it was good they called you back." he took a moment to enjoy his smoke. "We got to play that cat-and-mouse game a few more times over the years."

You nodded as you thought about it. "Yup, and you somehow were able to become a respectable businessman."

"We all have our ambitions when we're young--always wanting more and more." Crocodile explained.

The two of you paused for a moment to enjoy the drinks and listen in on the music being played. There was an odd history between you two. You were definitely enemies at one point, but politics and objectives changed over the years. There were other people for you to track down, and different businesses for Crocodile to draw his attention towards.

"Well," you broke the silence, "did you get what you were looking for?"

Crocodile hummed into his drink. "Now, I have a delicious drink and good company. I think that's all that matters now."

You chuckled as another song started playing. "Oh look at us, reminiscing about the glory days." You refilled his glass just as was nearing empty. "Who would have thought this is where we would have ended up?"

"Life is funny like that. We were so young when we met. We would have betted our lives and lost if someone told us we'd being chatting on a lazy evening like this." Crocodile went on. He took in the swirls and colors of your eyes. "I'm glad it ended up like this."

"Me too." you went around from the bar and held out your hand. "Let's have dance together then. For old time's sake."

Crocodile stood from his seat and put out his cigar. "I thought you'd never ask."

Make a Little Birdhouse In Your Soul is hands down my favorite. I'm talking favorite DC fic, top fics of all time period, not just from this list. I love this fic series. It is actively and regularly updating, thank fuck, because that little boost of serotonin is everything keeping me going I swear

The 70 Days After Groundhog Day is technically from Dick's POV, but it's about the aftermath of a timeloop that Jason was stuck in. it's. oh my god it's so good. just trust me on this one.

Emotional Motion Sickness is the "bruce goes to therapy" fic series we all want. canon get on this level

Retrograde Motion - I never used to like de-aging fics; not for any particular reason, I just never vibed with them. Recently I decided to see what all the fuss was about (bc there's so goddamn many in this fandom) and I'm glad, because I opened this fic and it's just. oh my god. the use of the de-aging trope here is truly incredible. after a whole week of dipping my feet into the trope I never need to do so again, because this fic made me fucking lose it. this is not going where you think it's going. also, for some reason there's not that much rebirth outlaws fic, and I really like what this author did with that team

matching wounds haha just gonna sneak my fic series on here and pretend that it was an accident, wait how did that get there (some jayroy later in the timeline too which can be read on its own if Jason coming home fics aren't for you)

I was introduced to poisonivory through the daredevil fandom earlier this year and may I tell you when I found out that this author writes for jayroy I lost my goddamn mind. this is my personal favorite, but I almost recommended at least two more aus. Their jayroy sugar daddy au is one of the only sugar daddy aus I've ever truly enjoyed. also really like the one where roy has had feelings for dick since their teen titans days but still starts a fwb thing with Jason. poisonivory can make me into kinks I'm not even into I s2g. anyway this one has lian literally dragging roy back into jason's life

finally, Reciprocation (or: Sex as Violence) shouldn't even really count as a jayroy fic but I feel weird putting it in the other category since it is sort of a jayroy fic. it's ace-aro!jason, which is one of my personal favorite interpretations of Jason (with so much textual evidence wtf), but there's still like... a lot of sex in this. Jason does not have a healthy relationship with sex in this fic. I would describe this as ending in a QPP for jayroy and lian.

The day of Yuna and Namjoon’s wedding was pure chaos. A day before, you receive a call about all floral arrangements being delayed because of the hurricane. The truck carrying everything wouldn’t make it in time for the wedding, which meant you and the other bridesmaids were running around with your heads cut off trying to find flowers for the wedding.

“Bora, bring those flowers over to the king's table,” you gestured to the arrangement sitting by the gift table. At this point, you were lucky to get any flowers for the wedding. It didn’t matter if they were cohesive or not.

“The king's table?” Bora clenched her teeth, looking around to figure out what you were referring to.

“The table we’re all sitting at!” you yelled. God, did you have to do everything yourself?

“Oh--right. Got it .” Bora hurried off, not wanting to be scolded by you again.

You told yourself never to agree to be anyone else’s maid of honor. It was just too stressful. If you were to marry in the future, you noted it would just be an elopement.

Looking at your list, there were still a few things that needed to be checked before you could head off to hair and make-up. There were only a few more hours until the wedding started.

“Need any help?” Jungkook asked, sneaking in from behind, wrapping his arms around your waist.

You peered quickly at him before returning to your clipboard. “Yes, please. Here take these and bring them to table seven.”

“You got it, boss,” he said before giving a quick peck on your lips before doing as he was asked.

Your eyes widened, looking around to make sure no one was watching. “Kook! What if someone sees?!”

He smiled and ran off. Were you excited that you and Jungkook were finally together? Yes, but only a few people knew about your relationship. The next big thing was to tackle your mom, but you didn't even want to think about that right now. You’d deal with that later.

You heard your name, and quickly, you turned to see Yuna running to you.

“The flowers are set up on the tables as we speak, and your bouquet is here. I'll put it in your room, and then I'll return after getting ready.” Your eyes scanned the rest of your checklist, ensuring everything went smoothly.

“Thank you. You're a godsend. I don't know what I'd do without you,” Yuna said, pulling you in for a hug.

You straightened and wrapped your arm around hers. “Let's not find out...again,” you chuckled.

After the hectic morning, you were able to find some time to quiet down and get ready. You slip on the sage green velvety off-the-shoulder bridesmaid dress, the gold drop-down pearl earrings, and the strappy beige Jimmy Choos. You took one last look at yourself in the mirror before grabbing your bouquet filled with eucalyptus, peonies, and blush pink roses.

Stepping out of your door, you found Jungkook leaning against the wall, looking dapper in a three-piece navy suit and hair slicked back, showing off his defined and chiseled jawline. You could kiss that jawline all day if you could. He took one look at you, mouthed a 'wow,'and whistled.

You narrowed your eyes at your hunky man. “Shut up.”

He stepped closer to you and took your hand, spinning you around to get a better look. “Damn, you're sexy,” Jungkook groaned in delight.

“Shhh —”

“You should dress like this more often so I can take everything off.”

“KOOK!”

He laughed and grinned as he tried to bring you in for a kiss. You tried to push him away, but he held on tighter. “I'm not letting go until I get a kiss from you.”

“You're trying to get us caught.”

“Mmhm, I want everyone to know we're together.” He let out a soft giggle as you rolled your eyes.

“Fine. God, you're so bad.”

He raised his eyebrows. “Admit it. You like it.”

“Maybe a little.”

“Ouh, you're kinky.”

“Okay---I'm leaving.” You tried to pull away from him again, but he chuckled and rolled you right back into his arms as he gave you a back hug.

“I'm kidding. I love seeing you like this. Flustered, that is,” he smiled, pressing his lips to your right shoulder, making his way up to your neck, leaving subtle marks behind. You let out a slight whine as he continued.

“I'm going to have to cover up these marks if you keep going.”

“Mm…” He continued, not caring in the world if anyone walked by.

You weren't sure if he even heard you. “Koo…” you muttered softly. He pressed deeper into your skin, and your head began falling back into him. You quickly turned around to face him. “You have five minutes. FIVE!”

“I can do that.” He grinned as he opened the door to your room, letting you go in first.

You quickly straightened your dress and grabbed your shoes, scrambling to get yourself ready again. You ran to Yuna's dressing room and knocked lightly.

“Yuna..?” you muttered before opening the door, peering in to see her sitting in front of the vanity.

“Finally, where have you been?” she asked, putting on a diamond earring.

“Sorry I got held up,” you said, closing the door behind you.

Yuna laughed as she took a look at her best friend. “Uh huh--I can clearly see.” She was pointing to the nipple pasty stuck to the side of your dress.

“OH SHIT –” You quickly grabbed it and tucked it into place. Fucking Jungkook–you told him not to remove the pasty, but he wouldn’t listen. He just had to feel all of you.

“Spare me the details,” Yuna chuckled while matting down her hair.

You nervously chuckled and began walking over to her. She turned to the mirror, taking in one last look before it was time to go. “You look gorgeous. Namjoon is going to cry.”

“He's definitely going to cry.”

You leaned down to hug her from behind. “I love you.”

“Love you too.”

The wedding was beautiful and everything you and Yuna had dreamed about when you were younger. After Yuna and Namjoon's first dance, the MC invited everyone else to join in. You sat there with twinkles in your eyes, watching your best friend so happy. Then you felt a tap on your shoulder. Jungkook stood there with his hand out.

“May I have this dance?”

You gazed at the doe-eyed young man, asking so sweetly. “What about my mom?” you asked, worried about what she would think.

“She'll just think we're being friendly,” Jungkook suggested with a sly smile and puppy dog eyes.

You bit your bottom lip, hesitating to take it. You weren’t just worried about your mother. A slew of people you knew would whisper and gossip about the two of you.

“Come on. I promise I'll behave.”

If there were no one around, you’d dance the night away. You loved the thought of being in his arms–kissing, giggling, touching…

“You better.”

“I don't know if you'll behave, though.”

You lightly hit him in the chest as you stood up. He led you to the dance floor and held you close with one hand on the small of your back, the two of you swaying to the song playing. His honey-brown eyes glistened from the night sky, his smile beaming from ear to ear, revealing the cutest dimple carved within his cheek.

“What..?”

“...I love you,” you softly said as you reached up and pressed your lips against his, forgetting where you were, forgetting all the complexities that came along with your relationship. Nothing else mattered at that moment—just you and him.

hi! ok I just wanted to ask someone who knows how tumblr works haha

so I found someone who writes amazing content so I decided to follow them. I binged lots of their fics earlier today and when I checked their profile again later, their profile doesn’t show. It seems they might have blocked me and I don’t know why :( I commented that I loved their fics and the comments are removed. my profile has my age and I am decently active on reposting & commenting on fics. This happened to me one other time too so I just am confused I guess :( I tried to message them but it said it wouldn’t go through so that makes me think I’m blocked? I guess I don’t know why a couple people blocked me? Just kinda made me sad bc I really enjoy their work but now I won’t be able to see anymore ☹️😢

first thing you gotta remember that in all likelihood, your getting blocked is nothing personal. reasons for blocking someone on tumblr include but aren't limited to:

you don't have your age (range) listed in your bio/clearly visible on your blog

the age you have listed doesn't adhere to boundaries a blog has set (f.e. you're a minor, or it only says "18+" which i know many writers don't accept)

your blog is completely empty i.e. you don't post/reblog stuff

you don't reblog other people's writing

you spam like posts

you've never changed the default icon/header to something else

people don't vibe with the things you reblog

your theme is a colour they don't like

a lot of the time, it comes down to everyone's preferences. god knows i've been blocked by people and didn't understand why, but frankly it's none of my business. most likely, you won't ever find out, either. everyone is creating their own online space, and sometimes that means having a quick blocking finger. i'm sorry that you won't be able to read those stories anymore but you have to accept creators' boundaries.

however, there are some things you can do and try to prevent getting blocked in the future. these are only a couple of suggestions around tumblr etiquette i've picked up on over the years; if anyone else wants to chip in here, please do!!

1. make sure your blog is, by all appearances, that of a human being

this might sound stupid because of course, you are a human, but with the recent bot wars it's all the more important to double check for red flags.

check your url. does it include a random string of numbers, lots of dashes, just a name and an adjective? all of these have been indicative of porn bots and people might block you on sight.

change your icon and your header. yes, both of them. there are lots of creators on here who make wonderful fandom related headers and icons, or you can create your own with canva. just be sure to follow creators' rules and preferably reblog their creation

change your blog title. if your account is new, it will just say "untitled", which is another indication you might not be a human. use quotes, song lyrics, anything you enjoy

add a bio. this is where you put your name or nickname (you can make one up) age, age range, links to second blogs (if applicable), more quotes, whatever. i prefer my bio short and to the point, but that doesn't have to be you.

important: do this for all blogs and side blogs you use regularly. if you have a second blog for reblogging fics, you need to put up your age there as well, or at least visibly link to your main blog so creators can see you're not a minor. the harder it is to verify that you're an adult, the more likely it is that you will get blocked

2. know the different kinds of interactions on tumblr and navigate them well

there's a difference between liking, commenting, reblogging, and reposting, and it's important. lots of people use reblogging and reposting interchangeably, but that's actually incorrect and can lead to serious mishaps. let's dissect them one by one.

liking.

you're familiar with the like from other social media platforms. you tap a post twice or hit the little heart at the bottom of the post and it's added to your likes. wonderful, right? well. tumblr is a little different.

tumblr doesn't have an algorithm. let me say that again. there is no algorithm on tumblr. i guess there is, on the for you page, but that doesn't count because it's really shit. the only important thing on tumblr is your dashboard, and your dashboard only shows original posts and the reblogs of those posts from people you follow.

no one cares about your likes. your likes don't do shit. that's why creatives on here keep talking about reblogs. you need to reblog things on tumblr in order for them to get seen. it's a snowballing effect. likes are nice and all, but they're private. they're not contributing to a story or an artwork being seen by more people. they're essentially empty interaction. what's more, should a post get deleted for whatever reason, that post is gone for you forever.

i know some people use their likes as bookmarks for things they want to look at later, but i would strongly urge you not to do that. people block serial likers, because most of the time it is, sadly, very unlikely that they will come back and actually interact with the post again. that's just the way it is. we can thank tiktok and instagram for that. again, tumblr doesn't have an algorithm. if you want to genuinely support and encourage people on here, you need to do more than liking.

commenting.

this is a step up from liking, because you're actually interacting now. a comment will show up in the activity of the person whose post you left it on and of the original poster (op)—more on that distinction in a minute. comments are encouraged especially on ask/answer type posts, or as a reply to an earlier reblog.

when it comes to fanfic, there are, again, pros and cons. you can only leave a comment from your main blog, which means that even if you have a second account where you reblog fics, there's not necessarily a link between the two. this can lead to your getting blocked if you've never reblogged a fic to your main blog. on the other hand, if people comment on your fic without reblogging it, but they do reblog other people's fics, that can also rub creators the wrong way because it creates a strange sort of hierarchy: why those fics? why not mine?

important thing to note: i am not saying that to make anyone feel bad about "just" commenting, i just want you to be aware that this might go on in a creator's head. it has in mine. i'm very aware that this is a me problem, but it's also a reason why people might get blocked out of the blue, which is why i wanted to bring it up.

reblogging.

ah yes, reblogging. reblogging is the thing that makes tumblr tumblr, and it's so easy to do. you just hit the little 🔁 symbol at the bottom of the post, and boom, it's reblogged to your own blog. everyone who follows you can now see it on their dashboard, and if they reblog it, their followers can see it, and so on and so forth. every time someone reblogs a post from you, you will get a notification in your activity, and so will the op.

reblogs are the heart and soul of tumblr. yes, original posts are (usually) individual creations, but the community aspect of this site is born through the reblog. there are different variations on how to reblog. all are valid, because all help spreading posts around.

the empty reblog is the quickest option. there's literally a quick reblog option on mobile: if you hold your finger on the reblog button for a second or so, you will see your icon appear. if you swipe in that direction, the post gets immediately reblogged to your blog. something similar can be done on desktop with the xkit browser extension. it's fast, it's easy, it gets the job done. it's perfect for when you like a post but don't have anything specific to say/reply.

the reblog with tags is the second fastest option. tags, on tumblr, are sort of the sotto voce version of comments. yes, you can use tagging to organise your blog and make your posts easily findable (is that a word?) but the real fun begins when little asides are added. you can keysmash in the tags. you can put your thoughts in the tags. you can go full caps without it looking overwhelming in the actual post. if you're just starting to comment on things, the tags are a great place to start, because the actual post will keep looking the same; the tags are just a little additional bonus for both you and the creator. this is what you would use for the majority of posts that aren't works of art in any way, too, like text posts you want to find again, polls, photographs etc.

the reblog with additions though? oh boy. that's the real stuff. imagine it as clipping on your thoughts to the post, right there for everyone to see. you can add gifs, and memes, and change the font, and change the colour, and scream, and keysmash, and ramble without limitations. it's like catnip for the op. if you reblog a fic, a moodboard, a piece of art, a gifset, whatever it is, and you put your thoughts underneath? man, it's amazing.

side note: if you're new to commenting on people's fics and you don't know what to say, i highly recommend referring to this post. (btw i linked my reblog so it can act as an example of the different forms of adding to a post: there were other reblogs before mine, and i've added tags. useful in its content and as an example!!)

reposting.

this is where we need to be careful. reblogs are great. reposts are theft. where's the difference? reposting refers to you copying another creator's work, whatever it may be, and creating a new post without any indication to the original person's efforts. even if you do include their url, you will most likely get reported and blocked. because now, you've become the op of this copied post, and the actual creator will get absolutely nothing.

you will most likely have seen banners in fic communities that state something along the lines of "don't copy or translate any of my work to this or any other site". that's what this refers to. this would also include the following:

posting another writer's story to ao3/wattpad/another fic site of your choice without their permission. you can absolutely never do this. "but what if"—NO. never. fullstop.

some creators allow translations of their work, but you can only ever share those with their explicit permission and proper credit.

saving a gif to use without linking back to the artist. this is maybe my biggest gripe. yes, i know this site sucks at making gifs searchable, but still, you can't do this. and no, "credit goes to the original artist" doesn't count, where did that bullshit even come from? it makes me so mad. that's not giving credit, that's being lazy.

3. be nice, and have fun

this is fandom, and it's supposed to be a hobby. this is supposed to be a good time. none of us are getting paid for any of this. yes, we're all passionate about what we do, whether we're looking at other people's creations or we make them ourselves. we're fans of that common thing, and isn't that great?

just a little more internet etiquette that's not really tumblr specific but could be a good reminder for everyone:

not everything is for you, and that's okay

if something's not for you, scroll away

if you don't like what someone is posting, ignore them. mute them. block them.

do not ever, and i mean ever, send anyone hate. you don't know who's on the other side of the screen. block them and move on. life's too fucking short.

don't correct people's grammar/spelling. only assholes do that. if you can't help yourself and they're a person you've interacted with before, shoot them a private message and be nice about it.

don't offer unsolicited advice. i don't care if you want to give constructive criticism to help the other person. unless they've explicitly asked you to do that, don't. you'll get blocked so quick, and you'll ruin someone's day.

if you're reading a fic that's not finished yet, don't ask for an update. yes, you're excited for the story to continue. but "part 2", "when's the next chapter out", "more please" and so on are all things that put pressure on creators whether that's your intention or not. it gives us the impression that what we've already put out is never enough. and that sucks. by all means, be excited about what comes next, but not like this.

he was scouted while in line for the men’s washroom at his school’s music festival and he thought he was being scammed at first. he actually put off calling the recruiter dude back for a long time until someone joked that he had the looks to be an idol and he suddenly remembered it and called as a joke and to sate his curiosity

he had no dreams whatsoever of being an idol and was pursuing a career in business, hoping to open his own cafe one day.. it's still his dream but he's put it on the backburner for now because he's found that he really does enjoy being an idol

was convinced by a close friend to audition since he’s always been good at singing + dancing even if he was usually just fooling around with friends either at karaoke or when they booked a studio for fun

he auditioned with singing (he sang iu’s hold my hand) and doing a little freestyle dance that was requested of him and surprisingly passed the audition and became an official legacy trainee in january of 2018

his parents were kind of ??? when he told them and originally weren’t very supportive because it was so sudden and he’s not usually *that* spontaneous but as he started settling into being a trainee and enjoying it, they’ve come around and now are his biggest fans

also it probably helped that jaesun and jaehwa were in the company (they’re cousins on their moms’ side)

during his trainee days, he really stuck to himself and only worked to better himself. he never really saw anyone as a rival and only saw his past self as his rival and wanted to continuously become the better version of himself. he was always Peak Introvert so the way he made friends was that he was awkward enough that extroverted people would come and take him under their wing LOL

he was pretty popular from the very first season of future dreams and was one of the front runners for all seasons he participated in, and eventually was confirmed to debut in season 3 of future dreams, and later debuted as the leader of agito on august 27, 2021

was entirely shocked that he was given the leader role because he’s such an introvert and didn't think he did too well during all the times he was in the leader position but has since sort of stepped and grown into the role and loves it now

he’s notoriously confident in himself, and has always been though it might have been slightly Extra before, he truly thinks he deserves to act that way now LOL

i always liken him to a cat (his official emoji on bubble and translation accounts is 🐱) but specifically a cat who’s owner has told him “no, don’t you dare” as he holds eye contact and then immediately smacks the bottle off the table without a second thought

he’s currently working on writing and producing songs, wanting to write and produce a full song for agito one day (i want him to become the bang chan/hongjoong of agito) as currently has the most credits for lyric writing in all of the new gen of legacy artists

is notoriously known to spend the majority of his waking hours in his personal studio (the v&a members tend to come and drag him home at night)

aside from v&a stuff, he’s publicly known for being a model and also for putting out a lot of covers on v&a’s youtube channel

he recently put out a studio choom dance cover and he’s very proud of it and is somewhat interested in possibly acting more but he's happy with what he's doing and what he's accomplished so far

Bee bee bee bee :D a little Icy update for you... I'm going to NYC in a few weeks to meetup with some online friends!!! It feels like ages since I sent that ask-- Oh wait . That was on anon SCREAMING aha anyways . I was that really anxious anon asking about advice for meeting up with online friends lmao 😭😭😭 back then the plan was very different and for a small town and possibly Staying with them and the whole plan was just... not as safe of an idea as it is now so I was really anxious at the time BUT I found out that NYC is actually not?? That expensive to go to during the offseason?? And it's close to where my dad lives so I can go visit him after so it works out perfectly:D

ok, i'm shifting into zelda mode. i have until friday to finally beat this sucker which i think has actually wound up being a good thing - i was playing less and less of it and less and less often, partly because of time, partly because of brain chemistry, but mostly because i was getting tired of the like. grind. koroks shrines lightroots etc. i don't really want to burn out on totk, so i think if i stop and play pikmin, it will be a nice little break and motivate me to come back to zelda and actually enjoy it instead of just. going through the motions. which is great because i do enjoy this game and i want to remember that i enjoy this game, and also it means i have more of it to enjoy later - at WORST, i will come back for 100% when the inevitable dlc comes out. map fatigue of doing botw twice (nearly 100%ing it the first time, doing it all the way the second time) has been my biggest problem with totk, and it's possible that i will never play either game again (or if i do it will be a very, very, very, VERY long time from now, like at least a decade), so ultimately i'm not mad about stretching it out to make it last longer than just one summer. it's going to be a REALLY long time before we get another zelda. as in, i could very well be in my 40s by then. might as well shorten the wait if i can

anyway the first order of business is to go back and finish the mineru quest. i wanna enjoy actually having her in my party for awhile before i take her to the final boss fight - i should have done it ages ago lol

oh yeah i quit bc of a hinox lol but he was super easy

deeply unfortunate: found several enormous piles of minable rock. which i felt compelled to break all of even though it wasn't fun. the good new is one of them was made of zonaite somaybe soon i can upgrade my battery again

also love and light to mineru but she is straight up in my way, and at this point in the game i can't dismiss her. like she wants to be close so she can kneel so i can piggyback and the mech is awesome when im in the mood for it but i am trying to do something. and she makes so many noises also. i think the sages, controlswise, are my least favorite gameplay element of this. they are SO. ANNOYING. i wish there was a limitation where only one could walk around with you at once and the rest were mapped to buttons lol

Yeah, I've changed a lot since my teenage years, but I'm 35 years old, so I did a lot of the changing looooong time ago, and I swear I haven't spent all these years just fiddling my thumbs the whole time. My characters have changed with me.

My views on personal romance have always been between "nope" and zero interest, I've been very aware of myself being ace for practically my entire life. My gay awakening was also eight years ago by now, so this isn't a new developement. I just suck at making up stories to put all the feels in.

(I had queer themes and characters before the great Gay Awakening, but since that point it's been personal and out loud.)

(okay so Arcanth is "any pronouns good" kinda character, this whole avoiding pronouns alltogether is annoying, and my antipathies towards English language are great and numerous. Now with that out of the way-)

I don't know why people keep getting this backwards. No, Arcanth never was my imaginary boyfriend. Arcanth was created as a character for myself to have fun playing as. Technically their gender is "my default", which for the teenage me having grown up in the 90s-00s meant male because of the old days cartoon logic of "well, I'm not interested in dating boys or make up or girly stuff, so it can't be a girl. Boys are allowed to be anything". Those were the options I knew.

My views on gender now, as an adult are way too complex to sort through here (and frankly not your business), but to put it simply binary it ain't. I'm most comfortable as undefined default, so that's what Arcanth gets to be these days. Basically I just found better ways and words to describe what they already were.

Now, the imaginary boyfriend thing was a popular thing at the time in certain circles. I had several peers who had such characters, and once I figured out there was a possibility people could mistakenly think that's what Arcanth was meant to be, I kinda immediately noped out of it and stopped drawing him, because the whole idea squicked me out.

So it was never a case of seeing them as a some sort of default heterosexuality, and more like "holy shit people could accidentally think I'm into this!" Absolute horror.

It's extra flavour of sadly hilarious how people STILL TO THIS DAY keep assuming that's what was going on. Congrats on hitting that exact same button. I hate it.

hi bby. i had to tell someone this bc everyone else is like “cool” about what i’m about to say but i’m like mind blown.

so back in dec 22’ when i was working at a western store, this super cute guy came in with his friend. his friend was buying jeans and boots. well making a christmas list. anywho, he had super dry humor almost to the point where you might think he’s an asshole but he was funny about it. and i’m almost certain he just has super super dry humor bc he was the same way with his buddy. anywho found out then he was at the firefighter academy. he left that day and i never got his number. i never thought i’d see him again. (i found his insta but that’s besides the point). i was too scared to ask him for his number, especially while on the clock. like i said i never thought i’d see him again.

fast forward a few months (february 23’) i put my 2 weeks in at the western store and went back to work at my old job (health foods store. kinda like whole foods. essentially a grocery store but lots of healthy stuff) town over from the western one and i’ve been back since.

fast forward AGAIN to september 22, 2023, aka yesterday where i am cashiering at the register near the left entrance and i hear the doors open so i automatically look by instinct. and i see a guy and his friend. the guy looked so so familiar. and so did his tattoos. they almost resembled tribal ones? idk. and then it clicked in my head that the guy was the SAME one i helped back at the western store almost 10 MONTHS before. i keep hawk eyeing him down the whole time. waiting for him to get to the front. i knew he’d go to self checkout bc who doesn’t at that age (20s).

i finally get off my register and make my way over just before he leaves and asked him if he was a firefighter at the city he’d told me he was going to back last december. he simply replied, “i am a firefighter but not for (blank). i’m one for (current town we’re in atm).” and before i can even ask him if he shopped at the western store he goes “hey, didn’t you work at (old job)?” and i was taken ABACK!

i ask him if his name starts with a ‘c’ and he says “no, it’s an ‘a’” and then i told him nvm i have nothing. and he goes again, “i’m just messing with you it’s c****” i’m laughing and say “i was gonna say that” and he goes on to say “you just said you didn’t know. you have to be more confident” all with a smile.

i didn’t think he’d remember me bc tbh 1. i’m not the best looking in my eyes. and 2. i feel like ppl want to forget me bc i’m so weird. so i respond with something along the lines of “oh my god you beat me to the question. wow you remember me? i’m flattered” and he asked about my job and why i left the old one. i asked him about his job. and he flat out goes “i was thinking if the firefighter gig doesn’t work out i could work here with you” as a joke bc he’s sarcastic.

we say a few more things and then he leaves and says something like “i’ll see ya. have a good day”

and now i’m having so many regrets ALL OVER AGAIN! for not asking for his number. i had the perfect way to say/ask for it. i only came up with it AFTER he fucking left.

“i’ll be sure to call you next time i’m in distress” and knowing how sarcastic he is he’d probs say something like “you don’t even have my number” and i’d just say “shit you’re right. what is it?” UGHHHHHH IM SO MAD AT MYSELF RN. also ps he even remembered our convo from december. what does that even mean when a guy remembers you and a convo you two had after only meeting once for 2 hours 10 months before??

okay that is a good line but do not blame yourself for not thinking of it in the moment. it is literally impossible to be smooth and suave while you're all flustered over a cute guy remembering you. i had a crush on a customer and i would hide every time he came in because i would turn into such a hot mess when he was around.

now, the question is, how crazy was you finding him on IG? like i fully understand and i back the FBI nature to seek out crushes i do it to every single man i've ever fancied, but is actually following him a major red flag. aka when he asks how you find him is it more than a two step process haha. because if it's not more than a two-step (he gave you his full name, or he's featured on the local firefighter IG) you can totally follow him. if it required a little more stealth than it's probably not a good move.

also, he knows where you work now. so be on the lookout for him. if he comes back in, take your chance. and ask him out for coffee. be nonchalant about it. like you ask out men all time and if he says he can't it won't make you cry in the bathroom (if he does say no it's totally fine to cry in the bathroom i've done it before). i asked my ex boyfriend out, and that's how we started dating.

thank you for being interested in dak and roxy i was so scared people would stop reading after i introduced that little plot line! all i've gotta say is... roxy writes based off life experience or scenarios she creates in her head... so... yeah... hahahaha

i did not originally intend to show roxy's pool date with jo and camille but i will write it tomorrow after i get off work and post it asap! i've been writing the season one finale for literal weeks at this point and i'm starting to go crazy over it so itll be nice to get into a different little one shot for a bit. i'll post it in a reblog of this question so we can all find it :)

right now i will give you a little sneak peek about how EVERYONE feels about the roxy-dak mess because i'm generous like that, and i don't really get to show everyones feelings on it in the story bc we only get inside her head... there's a bit in chapter 13 where we see a little bit of how the guys feel about it, but i didn't want to make it a whole thing and then it kinda turned into a whole thing 🤷‍♀️

anyway: how my characters view love and roxy's relationship through some cannon events and my own personal beliefs

jo: takes absolutely no shit when it comes to love, we see this when kendall has his thing with lucy... she grew up listening to boy bands and has a standard for how men should treat her <3 plus i think she's been in one non-serious "we went on a few dates so i guess he's my boyfriend" relationship from back home so she has a little experience. she thinks dak isn't worth any more of her time after he stood her up but she is afraid to voice this to her bestie...

camille: is a hopeless romantic and would go nearly to the ends of the earth for the ones she loves. she's a "if it's meant to be, it's meant to be" kinda gal and at age 16 fully believes logan is the love of her life. i think he's her first partner! she wants roxy to be as in love as she is and thinks that, while shitty, the whole standing her up thing is just a bump in the road on their way to everlasting love

carlos: pre-established to have never been in a relationship but he's like a silly jock so i'm sure he's been on at least a few dates! he has older sisters in my story (because he feels like he was written by a woman (me. i'm that woman.)) so you know he knows the proper way to show a date a good time! he thought roxy looked so pretty on her first date and he just wants her to have a good time and be happy. if dak makes her happy, he's happy! and he was actually kind of okay with the stand up thing because they got to hang out and dance together <3

kendall: captain (?? i don't think i made this up... this is in the show right?) of the hockey team in a midwestern high school. he's had a few partners and i know his mother whooped his ass (metaphorically) into shape after she found out he goofed around too hard and hurt someone he went out with on accident... as for the roxy and dak affair, he may or may not have picked up on the fact one of his good buddies may or may not like her... he's not a fan but will not say anything bc he isn't in the business of telling her what to do (she will hit him with her songbook very hard)

logan: while a believer in his love science, he's yet to find a way to quantify how he feels about camille after the party in chapter 10 :) he dated a bit his first few years in high school (mostly double dates with james? i also think is a fact from the show), and has had a few non-serious partners but he's never felt this way about anyone else! in his love science-y world, he can tell that dak does not feel the same way about roxy as she feels about him. if he did, he would've come to the party. simple love science!

james: good lord! he has dated anyone who is someone at mountain aire high school and it's always been to elevate or retain his own social status. so when he's normally a flirt for fun, or because it makes his boring little small town feel less boring, it's always been a game to him. except somewhere along the way of flirting out of habit with his new friend, he might have started to actually mean some of the things he's said. he thinks dak's a douche for standing her up and he's trying to make that clear to her the only way he knows how: vague hints and comments here and there. another established james fact is he's never been dumped, so i imagine this brings up a little bit of fear of rejection in him as well. he has trouble voicing his own feelings as well, since he's always trying to come across as perfect.

One person that comes to mind for me would be none other than Opal Whiteley!

She was a naturist and a writer who became famous for her childhood diary that she started at the age of five called The Diary of Opal Whiteley or The Story of Opal: The Journey of an Understanding Heart, which tells her account of befriending and hanging out with fairies and talking animals in the forests where she grew up nearby Cottage Grove, Oregon

I just find her to be an extremely fascinating person who I highly relate to due to her views of the world and mythical creatures and talking animals (plus I have a feeling that she was autistic so yeah)!

I do like my IRL name since it's both unique and pretty (plus it's a biblical name that means "weary-eyed" so there's that too)!

The thing is, I'm basically namefluid so I LOVE being called nicknames and other names that aren't my real name (for example being called Fozz and Hobbes makes me super giddy since I love being called multiple names

(also my IRL name is Leah, but ONLY CLOSE FRIENDS/MUTUALS/MY GF ARE ALLOWED TO CALL ME BY THAT)!!

OH, I DEFINITELY SEE MYSELF AS A HUMAN DOING MORE THAN ANYTHING!!!!!!!

I never heard of this saying before, but now it makes so much sense to me, it feels like two dots connected for me and I love it!

But yeah, I have a VERY hard seeing myself as even human, let alone a human being lol!

As stated in previous asks/posts, I am very spiritual, just in my own way where I just mish-mash a bunch of things about life and how it came to be into one belief system of my own making!

These beliefs include believing in the multiverse, believing in past lives/being otherkin + fictionkin, believing that certain kinds of mythical creatures like fairies and magic, and believing that Jesus was actually a wizard that knew and was capable of magic due to being a demigod of sorts!

7. Do you care about your ethnicity?

Other than my heritage in German, Irish, British, and 1/16th Native American (Shawnee), there's not really much about my ethnicity that I truly care about due to how white me and my family are!

Most definitely a dog person! I just love dogs and the way they show their affection, plus I just wouldn't want to have a litter box in my house, or to deal with cat shit n piss in general (ew sorry)!

Though I love going out to do things (like eating out, going out to malls, going to dispensaries, etc), I mainly just love to hang out at home and binge-watch TV and other indoor activities with my friends if we're all broke or there's nothing better to do! (sorry to those who like walks and hiking with no destination like a store or food, but its just not something I'm into unless someone else is walking/hiking with me)

I have a feeling that since I have autism, I feel the only way I would've turned out differently was if my family had more money/had connections in money. Another would be if we had more family around us that wasn't dead or dead to us

That way, I feel I would have more opportunities and connections to make myself money/get myself a job and a one way ticket tf out of where I live currently cuz I hate it!

Personally, I feel myself online/on social media is a much more genuine and authentic version of myself than my IRL self since I'm in an environment where I have to "tone down" myself so I come off more "quiet and introverted" than I personally would like to present myself as

Plus autism and other shit makes me super anxious IRL, thus not being able to be as open and easy going as I want to be IRL (plus other people and their anxieties and pressure they put on me doesn't help either)!

I just feel that it's pretty much the world in its most ideal state and the only problems are god-like beings, monsters, magic, and racism against other species (which got stomped out straight away like it should) which is all very easy to take care of, so why wouldn't I wanna live there?

I would say I do to varying degrees depending on how close I am to a particular person!

Like, it's not easy for me to find someone to fall in love with but when I do, I do fall HARD and super easily so there is that!

I mean, since I live with my dad and brother I see them every day (and it gets tiring ngl lol)!

When I am able to move out and live on my own, I would visit them a couple times every four months or so

But once I have a family/kids of my own, I would visit a lot less due to that, but will still try to see them anytime possible that's not just birthdays or holidays!

24. Have you ever felt like you had a “mind-meld” with someone?

Oh I've had a few mind-melds with people online, my best friend here (aka you lol!) and in IRL, and my girlfriend but I feel that's only a few people in my life since its pretty rare for me to connect with people right away in the first place!

25. Could you live as a hermit?

I would only be able to live like a hermit for half of the time, but I still LOVE going on trips and going out to do fun stuff (I am an ambivert after all!) so being a full time hermit is out of the question of me!

Man,,,,,, I can explain them in the most stupidest and simplest of terms so here we go!

My Gender: I'm everything and nothing under the sun, you can basically call me whatever you feel fits me, even if it's Burnt Toast!

It. Does. Not!

Mostly because I feel like being human in a human body constantly with being able to shape shift into something else to change things up to not get bored of myself

But half because I feel my IRL appearance is too "plain jane-y" for even my taste (like, I literally look so boring, even the outfits and wardrobe I have barely helps)!

Honestly, it varies highly on what's being said to me and who's it's being said by!

For strangers, it can vary from 3-5 depending on how horrible what they said was

For people I know, friends and family, it's a definite 5-7 since I feel they know how to get under my skin and get away with it by making me out to be the bad guy who's ""overreacting""!

honestly i used to have the worst confidence when i started working in customer service, i used to cry whenever someone was even slightly frustrated, but now when someone insults me on the phone, i have the power to hang up on them and i LOVE it <3 i think some customers do think "oh if i'm awful to them, they will cave and give me what i want" but actually when you are an angel to me, i will love you forever <333 i do the same, i always compliment them or tell them to have a nice day :) sending u good vibes !!

i kinda feel like that was exactly how txt were shown as </3 soobin & yeonjun are typically favoured more than the rest of the group while the other three—i feel—were ignored </3 it definitely feels a little bit different now but it used to be so obvious that gyu, taehyun and kai were not as popular :(

i saw you were taking requests and if you were open it i'd love to read about a high born lady whose the daughter of jon arryn who chose to marry stannis (bc she loves him) and stannis just wonders why out of all people she could have chosen she chose him. maybe like around the era shortly after robert became king and maybe even robert says something to stannis like "idk why she'd choose you" bc she and robert grew up together and were friends at the eyrie :).

This is a lot of Arryn!Reader and Robert -> Reader <--> Stannis angst so STRAP IN.

So, Jon Arryn's only daughter is likely born from his first wife (Jeyne Royce) or his second wife and cousin, Rowena Arryn. Regardless the little Arryn never would have known her mother, having either died in childbirth or from sickness when she was very young. Lord Arryn always held out for a son ... but he saw how sad and quiet his daughter was at a young age, and began to take a more active role in parenting and teaching.

It helped she was exceptionally clever, and their temperaments worked well together. Lord Arryn educated her like he would a son. He always meant to remarry a third time to have a "proper" heir, but his duties and war kept him busy. Lord Arryn always believed ladies ought to be polished and proper, and his daughter was... but she was also sitting in his war councils, helping run his household, learning advanced numbers and political intrigues, and so on. Growing up, she would receive a lot of mixed messages about being a 'proper wife' - that is, docile and cordial - while also knowing how to run a Great House. And yes, she was going to marry into a Great House. Jon Arryn wanted the best possible match for his little girl.

The best is what she was used to, after all. Given how lonely and isolated the Eyrie could be, he tried to make up for it with gifts, fine clothes, horses, ladies in waiting, and so on. The only reason she wasn't absolutely spoiled is because Lord Arryn expected much of her in the way of responsibilities, and she was constantly lectured about humility and patience and (insert more virtues a lady should have here). Again, the mixed messages.

So, finding out two boys from the wild Northern Starks and equally wild Southern Baratheons was very exciting. She already knew much about the history of their houses and why they were fostering. Lady Arryn was two or three years older, but she she was still wanting new friends, even if they were boys. And while her father usually disliked her mingling too much with the opposite sex, he had his sights on a potential future match.

Obviously Robert took to the beautiful Lady Arryn right away, and his crush was more overt as time went on... even if he started messing around with her ladies in waiting, which upset Lord Arryn to no end. He was very careful about the Baratheon boy being around his daughter. At least he didn't have to worry about Ned, who was the one dragging Robert away from Lady Arryn when the flirting was getting too far. Even if his daughter had a clear preference for one or both, Lord Arryn would be careful about their mingling. He didn't want his daughter's virtue called into question, and gods, did Robert make that difficult. Between openly flirting with her, dancing with her at every opportunity, waving at her when he jousted, fighting men who got too close ... Lord Arryn and Ned had their hands full.

Lady Arryn knew Ned and Robert for years, so naturally she heard about their families. Robert didn't have much good to say about his brother, and he didn't often mention Renly, so she didn't think much of them. She had a much clearer picture of Ned's siblings, because he lit up when she asked about them. Politically savvy as she was, she figured her father wanted her to marry one of them, so getting to know their families and Keeps was a good idea.

When the war broke out, it was a shock to her as anyone else. Robert and Ned were good friends at that point (even if Robert could annoy her to no end), and she feared for not just their lives, but her father's. She was terrified he'd take the Mad King's side, but he didn't... and maybe that was scarier. Before Jon Arryn left for war, he put his daughter in charge of the Eyrie. He told his men to protect and obey her as they would him. And at that point, her authority and capability had long been proven. They'd been calling her "the little Lady" for years, and now she was grown. She was Lady Arryn, and she would be Lady of the Eyrie if her father perished in war. Though she didn't know, Lord Arryn wrote many letters and documents that she shall be named his heir if he died.

She was shocked to learn of her father's marriage to Lord Tully's young daughter - she learned via raven that her father sent immediately after the wedding. She was so sure he was going to marry her off for a war alliance, but alas - Edmure Tully was too young, Ned was given to the other Tully girl because of his older brother's arrangement, and the other Great Houses either refused to pick a side or were against them. And even in wartime, her father refused to "settle" for her marriage.

The war comes to an end, and thankfully, her father, Ned and Robert are well. Even if she was always irked with the latter's advances (and often worried about being married to him), she's shocked at his marriage to Tywin's daughter. She was so sure the Lannisters would stay loyal to their mad king... well, her father will have to fill her in. He's Hand of the King, and he intends to stay in the Red Keep with his new wife, but naturally he wants his daughter to come visit and celebrate.

That's where she met Stannis properly, and she was taken aback by a few things. First, he's nothing like Robert described. He was a proper handsome Baratheon, but ... he was also so, so tired and haggard. It made her heart hurt. The whole feast hall was in a raucous celebration over Robert's crowning, and his own brother - who apparently, held siege for an entire year - looked ready to keel over. When he excused himself suddenly and no one noticed, she couldn't help herself from following after and making sure he was alright.

(Not quite love at first sight, but certainly an interest or infatuation, haha).

Stannis knew exactly who she was. When Robert visited, he wouldn't shut up about Lord Arryn's daughter, which always made Stannis uncomfortable. Even at the Tourney, his brother seemed to waffle between Ned's sister and Lord Arryn's daughter. At least she seemed like she had a steady head on her shoulders, and didn't seem to fawn and swoon over Robert like ladies had always done - even moreso, now that he was king.

So. Jon Arryn had his duties as Hand. His daughter should naturally have taken care of the Eyrie, which made him proud ... but he was beginning to see a good match for her in King's Landing. Though he and Stannis were not on friendly terms, they respected each other and understood each other's positions. The young man was deadly serious and capable. Often, Lord Arryn wished Robert was more like him. So he often wrote to his daughter, asking her to visit, all the while carefully keeping other proposals away from Stannis. Quietly convincing the man that he ought to hold out, he was still young. Easily deflecting the dozens of proposals lords gave him for his own daughter. The man had enough social savviness to avoid any suspicions, and, well ... Stannis was not a bachelor the court ladies were clamoring for, even with his social status.

With every visit, Lady Arryn would visit with Robert. He insisted on it, and his closeness to her certainly made her unpopular with the Queen. Her lord father also wanted her to dine with important courtiers and council members, including Robert's brother, whom she was increasingly drawn to. Her father presented the proposal to her first, explaining the practicality of the match. Once he'd laid down all the logical reasons to accept it, he added, "... And I trust him. I think he's a good man who would give you the consideration and life you deserve."

So, that was it. She saw the sense in the match, and well, wouldn't this happen eventually? Hadn't this been what her father raised her to do? And... wasn't she quite fond of the Baratheon boy?

(You better believe there was some fool ass behavior by Robert at the wedding. Probably put Stannis and his new bride on the wrong foot or at least in an awkward as hell place).

But!!! As with many of my other Stannis HCs and scenarios, eventually he and his new wife start getting along and eventually becoming very close. Given her capable upbringing, Stannis would respect her from the start and be grateful for the help in managing Dragonstone. Hell, she'd probably be savvy to much of the council business, given it's basically her father and husband running the show - and the three of them are usually dining together, anyway. Lord Arryn and Stannis might actually have a decent relationship if she's there to help it along.

There was the issue of Robert's jealousy - mixed with his grief over Lyanna, it wasn't always a pretty sight. It led to the Queen becoming even more irate, painting a target on Lord Arryn's daughter's back. He, Stannis and his daughter were aware of this, so she often had duties on Dragonstone. Which, to his surprise, would make Stannis start yearning for her return ... He might even make surprise visits to that accursed island to see her ...

It would be a year or so into the marriage that Stannis would finally bring it up. Was she ever disappointed it was him?

The question both confuses her and takes her off guard. "Whatever do you mean, love?"

Stannis is nervous to continue. That's rare for the man who always speaks his mind, not caring how harsh the truth was. "Robert always spoke well of you, and since you had known him so long - I thought you would be disappointed."

His jaw was clenching and he was trying not to look as tense as he felt... and failing miserably. At once, his wife would be taking his face in her hands, comforting him and trying to keep him from cracking his teeth.

"It took me years to tolerate that brother of your's," She spoke between kisses. "But I was fond of you right away, and now I love you more than I could ever love anyone."

hi. on your post where you may or may not have ended on 'moffat is either your angel or your devil' did you have maybe an elaboration on that somewhere that i could possibly hear about. i'm very much a capaldi era stan and i've never tried to defend the matt smith era even though it had delightful moments sometimes so i wonder where that puts me. i'd love to hear your perspective on moffat as a person with your political perspective. -nicole

hi ok sorry i took so long to respond to this but i dont think you know how LOADED this question is for me but i am so happy to elaborate on that for you. first a few grains of salt to flavor your understanding of the whole situation: a. im unfairly biased against moffat bc im a davies stan and a tennant stan; b. i still very much enjoy and appreciate moffat era who for many reasons; and c. i hate moffat on a personal level far more than i could ever hate his work.

the thing is that its all always gonna be a bit mixed up bc i have to say a bunch of seemingly contradictory things in a row. for instance, a few moffat episodes are some of my absolute favorites of the rtd era, AND the show went way downhill when moffat took over, AND the really good episodes he wrote during the rtd era contained the seeds of his destruction.

like i made that post about the empty child/the doctor dances and it holds true for blink and thats about it bc the girl in the fireplace and silence in the library/forest of the dead are good but not nearly on the same level, and despite the fact that i like them at least nominally, they are also great examples of everything i hate about moffat and how he approached dw as a whole.

basically. doctor who is about people. there are many things about moffats tenure as showrunner that i think are a step up from rtd era who! actual gay people, for one! but i think that can likely be attributed mostly to an evolving Society as opposed to something inherent to him and his work, seeing as rtd is literally gay, and the existence of queer characters in moffats work doesnt mean the existence of good queer characters (ill give him bill but thats it!)

i have a few Primary Grievances with moffat and how he ran dw. all of them are things that got better with capaldi, but didnt go away. they are as follows:

moffat projects his own god complex onto the doctor

rtd era who had a doctor with a god complex. you cant ever be the doctor and not have a god complex. the problem with moffats era specifically is that the god complex was constant and unrepentant and was seen as a fundamental personality trait of the doctor rather than a demon he has to fight. he has the Momence where you feel bad for him, the Momence where he shows his humility or whatever and youre reminded that he doesnt want to be the lonely god, but those are just. moments. in a story where the doctor thinks hes the main character. rtd era doctor was aware that he wasnt the main character. he had to be an authority sometimes and he had to be the loner and he had to be sad about it, but he ultimately understood that he was expendable in a narrative sense.

this is how you get lines like “were the thin fat gay married anglican marines, why would we need names as well?” from the same show that gave you the gut punch moment at the end of midnight when they realize that nobody asked the hostess for her name. and on the one hand, thats a small sticking point, but on the other hand, its just one small example of the simple disregard that moffat has for humanity.

incidentally, this is a huge part of why sherlock sucked so bad: moffats main characters are special bc theyre so much bigger and better than all the normal people, and thats his downfall as a showrunner. he thinks that his audience wants fucking sheldon cooper when what they want is people.

like, ok. think of how many fantastic rtd era eps are based in the scenario “what if the doctor wasnt there? what if he was just out of commission for a bit?” and how those eps are the heart of the show!! bc theyre about people being people!! the thing is that all of the rtd era companions would have died for the doctor but he understood and the story understood that it wasnt about him.

this is like. nine sending rose home to save her life and sacrifice his own vs clara literally metaphysically entwining her existence w the doctor. ten also sending rose with her family to save her life vs river being raised from infancy to be obsessed w the doctor and then falling in love w him. martha leaving bc she values herself enough to make that decision vs amy being treated like a piece of meat.

and this is simultaneously a great callback to when i said that moffats episodes during the rtd era sometimes had the same problems as his show running (bc girl in the fireplace reeks of this), and a great segue into the next grievance.

moffat hates women

he hates women so fucking much. g-d, does steven moffat ever hate women. holy shit, he hates women. especially normal human women who prioritize their normal human lives on an equal or higher level than the doctor. moffat hated rose bc she wasnt special by his standards. the empty child/the doctor dances is the nicest he ever treated her, and she really didnt do much in those eps beyond a fuck ton of flirting.

girl in the fireplace is another shining example of this. youve got rose (who once again has another man to keep her busy, bc moffat doesnt think shes good enough for the doctor) sidelined for no reason only to be saved by the doctor at the last second or whatever. and then youve got reinette, who is pretty and powerful and special!

its just. moffat thinks that the doctor is as shallow and selfish as he is. thats why he thinks the doctor would stay in one place with reinette and not with rose. bc moffat is shallow and sees himself in the doctor and doesnt think he should have to settle for someone boring and normal.

not to mention rose met the doctor as an adult and chose to stay with him whereas reinette is. hm. introduced to the doctor as a child and grows up obsessed with him.

does that sound familiar? it should! bc it is also true of amy and river. and all of them are treated as viable romantic pairings. bc the only women who deserve the doctor are the ones whose entire existence revolves around him. which includes clara as well.

genuinely i think that at least on some level, not even necessarily consciously, that bill was a lesbian in part bc capaldi was too old to appeal to mainstream shippers. like twelve/clara is still a thing but not as universally appealing as eleven/clara but i am just spitballing. but i think they weighed the pros and cons of appealing to the woke crowd over the het shippers and found that gay companion was more profitable. anyway the point is to segue into the next point, which is that moffat hates permanent consequences.

moffat hates permanent consequences

steven moffat does not know how to kill a character. honestly it feels like hes doing it on purpose after a certain point, like he knows he has this habit and hes trying to riff on it to meme his own shit, but it doesnt work. it isnt funny and it isnt harmless, its bad writing.

the end of the doctor dances is so poignant and so meaningful and so fucking good bc its just this once! everybody lives, just this once! and then he does p much the same thing in forest of the dead - this one i could forgive, bc i do think that preserving those peoples consciousnesses did something for the doctor as a character, it wasnt completely meaningless. but everything after that kinda was.

rory died so many times its like. get a hobby lol. amy died at least once iirc but it was all a dream or something. clara died and was erased from the doctors memory. river was in prison and also died. bill? died. all of them sugarcoated or undone or ignored by the narrative to the point of having effectively no impact on the story. the point of a major character death is that its supposed to have a point. and you could argue that a piece of art could be making a point with a pointless death, ie. to put perspective on it and remind you that bad shit just happens, but with moffat the underlying message is always “i can do whatever i want, nothing is permanent or has lasting impact ever.”

basically, with moffat, tragedy exists to be undone. and this was a really brilliant, really wonderful thing in the doctor dances specifically bc it was the doctor clearly having seen his fair share of tragedy that couldnt be helped, now looking on his One Win with pride and delight bc he doesnt get wins like this! and then moffat proceeded to give him the same win over and over and over and over. nobody is ever dead. nobody is ever unable to be saved. and if they are, really truly dead and/or gone, then thats okay bc moffat has decided that [insert mitigating factor here]*

*the mitigating factor is usually some sort of computerized database of souls.

i can hear the moffat stans falling over themselves to remind me that amy and rory definitely died, and they did - after a long and happy life together, they died of old age. i dont consider that a character death any more than any other character choosing to permanently leave the tardis.

and its not just character deaths either, its like, everything. the destruction of gallifrey? never mind lol! character development? scrapped! the same episode four times? lets give it a fifth try and hope nobody notices. bc he doesnt know how to not make the doctor either an omnipotent savior or a self-pitying failure.

it is in nature of doctor who, i believe, for the doctor to win most of the time. like, it wouldnt be a very good show if he didnt win most of the time. but it also wouldnt be a very good show if he won all of the time. my point is that moffats doctor wins too often, and when he doesnt win, it feels empty and hollow rather than genuinely humbling, and you know hes not gonna grow from it pretty much at all.

so like. again, i like all of doctor who i enjoy all of it very much. i just think that steven moffat is a bad show runner and a decent writer at times. and it is frustrating. and im not here to convince or convert anyone im just living my truth. thank you for listening.
