You wake up to the smell of bacon.

Yawning wide, you turn your head to Carlos' side of the bed, a little confused to find it empty. Running a hand across the sheets, you're even more surprised to find them cold.

Reaching out to your plugged in phone on the bedside table, you squint as it lights up. Okay, not too early. But, wait, your daughter usually starts crying before now.

Bolting up, your feet are almost on the carpet before your muddled brain slots the puzzle pieces together. Carlos' side of the bed is cold. Maybe he heard her before you did and calmed her so she didn't wake you up.

Why didn't he come back?

Rubbing a hand across your face, the decision to check or not is made for you. You hear Carlos saying something a moment before he opens the door, a plate of food in each hand.

"She's not going to believe how you helped with breakfast this morning."

And your daughter swaddled across his chest, who kicks her feet and giggles when she spots you.

"Hey, what are you doing awake?" Crossing the bedroom, he sets a plate full of bacon on the bedside table and uses his now free hand to swat at your thighs. "Get back in bed."

"What?" you ask, brain still muddled, tucking your feet back under the blankets.

"Our little girl here decided she wanted to make you breakfast in bed this morning." When you're leaning comfortably against the pillows, he sets the other plate onto your lap. Sunny side up eggs with toast greets your eyes, and your tummy grumbles a moment later.

Your little girl gurgles, arms doing a little wave.

Producing a fork, Carlos hands it to you before looking down to your girl. "Right. We have more dishes for you. Want pancakes next? Fruit? Bagel?"

At the mention of the bagel, your little one babbles.

"I agree, bagel sounds good." Making his way back to the kitchen, he throws over his shoulder, "I'll make sure it has cream cheese on it."

Blinking in surprise, you give yourself a moment to process before picking up a piece of bread and dipping it into the egg. You're only three bites in before Carlos returns with more plates, and it's not until the bed is almost full with all the dishes you own that Carlos leans against the wall opposite you, holding a strawberry shaped teether for your daughter to chew.

"What did I do?" you ask, setting aside an empty plate to pick up another. "To deserve all this, I mean?"

"Aside from popping this one out into the world?" He does a little shake, prompting your girl to kick her feet and giggle. "Maybe I just wanted to pamper my queen, ever think of that?"

You give him a curious look but keep eating until your stomach is full to bursting. When you go to get up to put the dishes up, Carlos swats your legs and hustles everything out, baby giving her commentary the entire time.

Still wondering if maybe there's a catch, you watch as Carlos unswaddles your girl and slides into his spot next to you, setting your daughter on her belly on his chest.

You slide up against his side, your hand resting against your girl's back. Her sleepy eyes drift to you, a small smile turning up her chubby cheeks.

"She's had a full morning helping me out in the kitchen." Carlos' voice rumbles through his chest, making her yawn and close her eyes. "She told me exactly how you like your pancakes."

"Did she now?"

"She did. Was very particular about it. If I made a mistake, I'd get an earful." Pressing a kiss to the crown of your head, he adds, "Just like someone else I know."

"Oh, so it's my fault?"

"Yeah. I mean, genetics and all, right?"

"And what did she get from you, big guy?"

"My superior sense of humor."

Smiling wide, you slot your head between Carlos' shoulder and collarbone. From this angle, you can see your girl passed out, drool dribbling from her open mouth and onto your husband's shirt. Rubbing your thumb absentmindedly up and down her back, you ask Carlos, "So what's the plan now?"

"I dunno, I didn't think that far." A pause. "A nap?"

"A nap sounds good."

Squeezing you in a one armed hug, you hear Carlos hum in agreement. "Nap it is, then."

Sometimes, even he had such ridiculous thoughts, that told him that only he was worthy of you. He’s already killed so much for you, he’s serving you every day, and he is the servant you’re the closest with. You laughed and cried in front of him - he’s seen all your sides, and Riddle’s accepted them all, growing indeed fond of them all. A beautiful Queen with a beautiful heart; someone who all the blood on his hands was the bare minimum. He’d do anything for you. As a soldier, as a friend, aspiring to be more than that… So, what difference would it make if there were two matching rings on your fingers?

Unlike those swines your parents sought for you to marry, he did not care about the throne at all, but merely about you as a person. Your beauty may have intrigued him at first, but in the end it was the beauty of your personality, your kindness, your forgiving smile, your slight guilt of him having to behead the judged criminals for your sake. Slowly but surely, Riddle had understood just how precious your pure soul was. And he had no intentions letting anybody taint it, no matter what.

Some nights, the fear of the crown prince being caught with you keeps you up. You can already imagine the rumours that would inevitably surface if anyone were to ever find out about your clandestine meetings with him.

What you can’t imagine, however, is not being able to see Wonwoo again. The king and queen seem kind, albeit distant, from their public addresses, but even the kindest have their limit, and you’re almost certain their son sneaking into a bookstore—where the owner also lives, no less—late at night is gravely testing theirs.

Though it’s moments like these that make the fear, the risk, the secrecy all worth it in your eyes. From behind a looming stack of books, you let your gaze linger on Wonwoo. There’s something magnetising about his perfect posture, handsomely sharp features, and silver-rimmed glasses that slide down his nose bridge every five minutes. In a sense, he’s the lantern hanging outside by your door and you’re the moth drawn to it, unable to will yourself to pull away.

As though feeling the weight of your stare, he looks up, his eyes finding yours immediately. You feign an air of nonchalance when he raises his brows curiously, hoping he doesn’t sense your panic at being caught ogling. There’s a lamp hanging right above you, but you don’t think it’s the source of the heat that blooms beneath your cheeks.

“Interesting choice,” you finally choke out, gesturing to the book he’s holding. You had recognised the cover the moment he pulled it out from its shelf, but chose to remain silent until now. “I thought fairytales were too…” your voice trails off as you try to find the right word, not wanting to offend him, “vapid for your tastes, Your Highness.”

“I changed my mind,” Wonwoo responds softly, offering a shrug before idly flipping a page. Is the light deceiving your eyes, or is that a smile crossing his lips? “Also, I thought I said there’s no need to use my title when we are alone.”

When we are alone. You wish your cheeks didn’t burn as much as they should whenever he says it. Then again, everything sounds better, more enticing when they come from his lips.

“R-Right. My apologies, Your H—Wonwoo.”

He hums. “To answer your question, I have… taken quite a liking to fairytales recently.”

“Oh?” You move to take a seat across from him to hear him better—at least, that’s what you tell yourself—and not so you can get a better glimpse at him. Your stomach does a flip as you take in his features, illuminated by pale yellow light that also creates flickers of gold in his irises.

“What changed your mind, if I may ask?”

With a light thud, Wonwoo sets the book down onto the table before lifting his head from the aged pages, his lips pursed as he looks off to the side in deep thought.

“I’m not too certain myself,” he finally says, “perhaps it’s the temporary reprieve from reality they provide that I’m beginning to enjoy.”

Your voice is tentative, barely audible when you ask, “Is… something troubling you, Wonwoo?”

“Ah, it’s nothing troubling.” The way he waves his hand is elegant, dismissive, in an attempt to ease your concern. “Father and Mother are simply becoming rather… impatient because I am not yet married.”

“But—but you’re still so young!”

“Not by royal standards, especially for a crown prince.” His lips curl into a wry smile, the amused glint in his eyes faltering for a second to betray a hint of regret. How ironic that you spend your days tucked away within your cave of bookshelves, and yet you’re unable to find the words to describe the uncomfortable ache that burrows into your heart.

You remember a time in the distant past when you, much like most commoners you know, believed the crown prince to be a stoic, unmoved man. Back then, you would’ve never foreseen him sitting across from you in your tiny bookstore tucked away in a dingy alleyway, arguing over the semantics of happy endings, hiding smiles behind cooled cups of tea.

“I cannot say for certain if my future holds the same,” Wonwoo continues, looking up from the page to hold your gaze, “but…” His lips are still curved into a smile, yet something bittersweet manages to peek through his flawless composure. It sends a gripping ache straight to your heart. “It is nice to hope.”

“Keep it,” you blurt out, earning a mildly bemused look from the prince. “The book,” you rush to clarify, hoping to whatever deity watching over you from the heavens that he doesn’t notice the mistiness in your eyes. “If it holds such significance to you, I’d like for you to have it.”

“That’s very kind of you, Y/N. But respectfully, I will decline. I’d hate to keep such a lovely story to myself, why not leave it here where it can bring others some much needed hope as well?”

An appreciative smile stretches across your face, one that Wonwoo mirrors without hesitation. “Thoughtful to your people as always,” you tease. “Very well then, it shall remain here.”

Curiously, your cat trots across the table before deciding the space between you makes the perfect resting place. Wonwoo hardly seems to mind, gently running a curled finger over her fur and grinning when she lets out a contented purr.

“What are the chances you’d allow me to have your cat instead?”

“I’ve had the sneaking suspicion that you only return here for Maisie for quite some time, Your Highness.”

His laugh rings clearly as your eyes meet; your heart skips a beat at the playful twinkle that not even his glasses can disguise.

when I originally thought of the idea I wanted it to be less than 5 chapters because I'm bad at finishing things 😵‍💫 my original plan was only 3 chapters which is so funny to me

I didn't start an outline until I started chapter two, chapter one was 100% just vibes

I try to plant seeds for pay off later but I am Forgetful even with an outline because when I get in the flow of writing I tend to start ignoring my outline so anyway on each chapter draft at the bottom I have in all caps each thing I need to mention that chapter lol

I planned on having more interactions with her friends until I decided I don't care much for their interactions with her friends....oops. spoiler alert for the last chapter but what was originally going to be a scene with all of her friends is now just going to be Cassie and Lexi because I care for that dynamic a lot more

I think I already told you this but I meant to have them start saying "I love you" to each other casually in front of their friends after he first suggests it in the second chapter because it contributes to Lexi's confusion but I completely forgot to do that LOL
