Several IPD companies are integrating new techniques and innovations into the product, such as dielectric metals, 3D passive components, and thick layers to obtain insulation and high capacitance. In 2020, key market player Johanson Technology, Inc. announced the release of its front-end integrated passive device for specific chipsets.
Mentioned below are some of the key trends that may propel integrated passive device market outlook:
1)         Increasing adoption of devices fitted with diplexers
Integrated passive devices with filters and diplexers find usage in frequency bands and lumped-elements circuit used for the purpose of impedance matching. Diplexers are used in GPS, antennas, cellular infrastructures like 2G, 3G and LTE, automotive telematics, IoT applications and front-end modules of wireless base stations.

Google reneged on the monopolistic bargain
Tumblr media
I'm on tour with my new novel The Bezzle! Catch me TONIGHT in SALT LAKE CITY (Feb 21, Weller Book Works) and TOMORROW in SAN DIEGO (Feb 22, Mysterious Galaxy). After that, it's LA, Seattle, Portland, Phoenix and more!
Tumblr media
A funny thing happened on the way to the enshittocene: Google – which astonished the world when it reinvented search, blowing Altavista and Yahoo out of the water with a search tool that seemed magic – suddenly turned into a pile of shit.
Google's search results are terrible. The top of the page is dominated by spam, scams, and ads. A surprising number of those ads are scams. Sometimes, these are high-stakes scams played out by well-resourced adversaries who stand to make a fortune by tricking Google:
https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/tech-news/phone-numbers-airlines-listed-google-directed-scammers-rcna94766
But often these scams are perpetrated by petty grifters who are making a couple bucks at this. These aren't hyper-resourced, sophisticated attackers. They're the SEO equivalent of script kiddies, and they're running circles around Google:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/02/24/passive-income/#swiss-cheese-security
Google search is empirically worsening. The SEO industry spends every hour that god sends trying to figure out how to sleaze their way to the top of the search results, and even if Google defeats 99% of these attempts, the 1% that squeak through end up dominating the results page for any consequential query:
https://downloads.webis.de/publications/papers/bevendorff_2024a.pdf
Google insists that this isn't true, and if it is true, it's not their fault because the bad guys out there are so numerous, dedicated and inventive that Google can't help but be overwhelmed by them:
https://searchengineland.com/is-google-search-getting-worse-389658
It wasn't supposed to be this way. Google has long maintained that its scale is the only thing that keeps us safe from the scammers and spammers who would otherwise overwhelm any lesser-resourced defender. That's why it was so imperative that they pursue such aggressive growth, buying up hundreds of companies and integrating their products with search so that every mobile device, every ad, every video, every website, had one of Google's tendrils in it.
This is the argument that Google's defenders have put forward in their messaging on the long-overdue antitrust case against Google, where we learned that Google is spending $26b/year to make sure you never try another search engine:
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-10-27/google-paid-26-3-billion-to-be-default-search-engine-in-2021
Google, we were told, had achieved such intense scale that the normal laws of commercial and technological physics no longer applied. Take security: it's an iron law that "there is no security in obscurity." A system that is only secure when its adversaries don't understand how it works is not a secure system. As Bruce Schneier says, "anyone can design a security system that they themselves can't break. That doesn't mean it works – just that it works for people stupider than them."
And yet, Google operates one of the world's most consequential security system – The Algorithm (TM) – in total secrecy. We're not allowed to know how Google's ranking system works, what its criteria are, or even when it changes: "If we told you that, the spammers would win."
Well, they kept it a secret, and the spammers won anyway.
A viral post by Housefresh – who review air purifiers – describes how Google's algorithmic failures, which send the worst sites to the top of the heap, have made it impossible for high-quality review sites to compete:
https://housefresh.com/david-vs-digital-goliaths/
You've doubtless encountered these bad review sites. Search for "Best ______ 2024" and the results are a series of near-identical lists, strewn with Amazon affiliate links. Google has endlessly tinkered with its guidelines and algorithmic weights for review sites, and none of it has made a difference. For example, when Google instituted a policy that reviewers should "discuss the benefits and drawbacks of something, based on your own original research," sites that had previously regurgitated the same lists of the same top ten Amazon bestsellers "peppered their pages with references to a ‘rigorous testing process,’ their ‘lab team,’ subject matter experts ‘they collaborated with,’ and complicated methodologies that seem impressive at a cursory look."
But these grandiose claims – like the 67 air purifiers supposedly tested in Better Homes and Gardens's Des Moines lab – result in zero in-depth reviews and no published data. Moreover, these claims to rigorous testing materialized within a few days of Google changing its search ranking and said that high rankings would be reserved for sites that did testing.
Most damning of all is how the Better Homes and Gardens top air purifiers perform in comparison to the – extensively documented – tests performed by Housefresh: "plagued by high-priced and underperforming units, Amazon bestsellers with dubious origins (that also underperform), and even subpar devices from companies that market their products with phrases like ‘the Tesla of air purifiers.’"
One of the top ranked items on BH&G comes from Molekule, a company that filed for bankruptcy after being sued for false advertising. The model BH&G chose was ranked "the worst air purifier tested" by Wirecutter and "not living up to the hype" by Consumer Reports. Either BH&G's rigorous testing process is a fiction that they infused their site with in response to a Google policy change, or BH&G absolutely sucks at rigorous testing.
BH&G's competitors commit the same sins – literally, the exact same sins. Real Simple's reviews list the same photographer and the photos seem to have been taken in the same place. They also list the same person as their "expert." Real Simple has the same corporate parent as BH&G: Dotdash Meredith. As Housefresh shows, there's a lot of Dotdash Meredith review photos that seem to have been taken in the same place, by the same person.
But the competitors of these magazines are no better. Buzzfeed lists 22 air purifiers, including that crapgadget from Molekule. Their "methodology" is to include screenshots of Amazon reviews.
A lot of the top ranked sites for air purifiers are once-great magazines that have been bought and enshittified by private equity giants, like Popular Science, which began as a magazine in 1872 and became a shambling zombie in 2023, after its PE owners North Equity LLC decided its googlejuice was worth more than its integrity and turned it into a metastatic chumbox of shitty affiliate-link SEO-bait. As Housefresh points out, the marketing team that runs PopSci makes a lot of hay out of the 150 years of trust that went into the magazine, but the actual reviews are thin anaecdotes, unbacked by even the pretense of empiricism (oh, and they loooove Molekule).
Some of the biggest, most powerful, most trusted publications in the world have a side-hustle in quietly producing SEO-friendly "10 Best ___________ of 2024" lists: Rolling Stone, Forbes, US News and Report, CNN, New York Magazine, CNN, CNET, Tom's Guide, and more.
Google literally has one job: to detect this kind of thing and crush it. The deal we made with Google was, "You monopolize search and use your monopoly rents to ensure that we never, ever try another search engine. In return, you will somehow distinguish between low-effort, useless nonsense and good information. You promised us that if you got to be the unelected, permanent overlord of all information access, you would 'organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful.'"
They broke the deal.
Companies like CNET used to do real, rigorous product reviews. As Housefresh points out, CNET once bought an entire smart home and used it to test products. Then Red Ventures bought CNET and bet that they could sell the house, switch to vibes-based reviewing, and that Google wouldn't even notice. They were right.
https://www.cnet.com/home/smart-home/welcome-to-the-cnet-smart-home/
Google downranks sites that spend money and time on reviews like Housefresh and GearLab, and crams botshittened content mills like BH&G into our eyeballs instead.
In 1558, Thomas Gresham coined (ahem) Gresham's Law: "Bad money drives out good." When counterfeit money circulates in the economy, anyone who gets a dodgy coin spends it as quickly as they can, because the longer you hold it, the greater the likelihood that someone will detect the fraud and the coin will become worthless. Run this system long enough and all the money in circulation is funny money.
An internet run by Google has its own Gresham's Law: bad sites drive out good. It's not just that BH&G can "test" products at a fraction of the cost of Housefresh – through the simple expedient of doing inadequate tests or no tests at all – so they can put a lot more content up that Housefresh. But that alone wouldn't let them drive Housefresh off the front page of Google's search results. For that, BH&G has to mobilize some of their savings from the no test/bad test lab to do real rigorous science: science in defeating Google's security-through-obscurity system, which lets them command the front page despite publishing worse-than-useless nonsense.
Google has lost the spam wars. In response to the plague of botshit clogging Google search results, the company has invested in…making more botshit:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/02/16/tweedledumber/#easily-spooked
Last year, Google did a $70b stock buyback. They also laid off 12,000 staffers (whose salaries could have been funded for 27 years by that stock buyback). They just laid off thousands more employees.
That wasn't the deal. The deal was that Google would get a monopoly, and they would spend their monopoly rents to be so good that you could just click "I'm feeling lucky" and be teleported to the very best response to your query. A company that can't figure out the difference between a scam like Better Homes and Gardens and a rigorous review site like Housefresh should be pouring every spare dime it brings in into fixing this problem. Not buying default search status on every platform so that we never try another search engine: they should be fixing their shit.
When Google admits that it's losing the war to these kack-handed spam-farmers, that's frustrating. When they light $26b/year on fire making sure you don't ever get to try anything else, that's very frustrating. When they vaporize seventy billion dollars on financial engineering and shoot one in ten engineers, that's outrageous.
Google's scale has transcended the laws of business physics: they can sell an ever-degrading product and command an ever-greater share of our economy, even as their incompetence dooms any decent, honest venture to obscurity while providing fertile ground – and endless temptation – for scammers.

Message From The Developers
We're thrilled to share this pivotal update about Mythaura’s development journey, which showcases many of the core features we have planned for this game. Today marks a significant transition: we're shifting from the intricate and challenging phase of game engine development to the exciting realm of feature development.
Since beginning this project, our focus has been on scoping and then crafting robust and core components. Features such as wild areas, battle, and multiplayer systems, not to mention the complex breeding system, passive effect management, player inventory system, and the beast image engine. We've also been diligently integrating these elements with complex user interfaces and ensuring they will work on most devices (an ever ongoing battle). It's been a journey of overcoming unknowns and technical challenges, and we're proud of what we've achieved.
Now, we're entering a new chapter. Our attention turns to fleshing out the game's features, with a special focus on developing an immersive questing and dialogue system, towns & shops, skill trees & progression, and tools for content development among other needed feature development. The hardest challenges have by and large been solved at this stage and our focus can now be how to best deliver an amazing gaming experience by bringing them together. This shift doesn't mean the work is done—far from it. But it's a major milestone that brings us closer to realizing our vision for the game.
We want to express our heartfelt gratitude for your unwavering support and enthusiasm, and look forward to a jam packed 2024.

NG+ Cycle Update
Tumblr media
In last month's update we revealed our plans for Mythaura's New Game+ system. Originally, our plan allowed players from NG+2 and beyond to create any Tier 1-Tier 3 Beast.
We have since changed it so that at the beginning of a player's NG+2 cycle they may make a Tier 1-Tier 3 Beast with up to three Specials, but NG+3 and beyond will not feature any custom Beast creation. The player will instead have access to a pool of NG+3-exclusive items that they will receive items from.
Thank you to our Discord members for all their input, it provided us with a much better direction to move forward with!

Tumblr media
Safari & iOS Problems
At this time, iOS devices like iPad and iPhone are only partially supported. These are the issues that the dev team is aware of and actively working on:
On iOs, Safari forces a refresh if the memory usage spikes, forcing you back to the demo start page. This happens at different times on different devices dependent on its RAM usage.
Sometimes when starting a battle, battlers start shifted down, then snap to the correct position after interacting with a button.
The zoom in on a beast image is pixelated (Safari bug: https://bugs.webkit.org/show_bug.cgi?id=27684).
On Mac Safari, battle animations showing with a black background. iOS is fine. Solution is to disable battle animations in the settings.
You will need to be running at least iOS 15 and Safari version 15 or greater in order to use Mythaura.

Harry Osborn is genuinely integral to the thematic fabric of Spider-Man. Even if you don't take into account the way his character foils those of both Norman and Peter, he contributes so much to the dynamic between these two.
Anyone can see that Peter saving people is good and Norman blowing them up with pumpkin bombs is bad, but where the respective core philosophies these two men follow are really magnified and examined is in the way each of them feels about and interacts with Harry.
One instance of this is ASM #122. Peter almost killing the Goblin in a fit of rage after Gwen's death is absolutely a demonstration of how he and his adversary are not only different but alike - yet his attack on Norman is something the audience can sympathize with deeply and feel is heavily justified, considering what he's done.
Where Peter's worst side truly shines, in my opinion, is earlier in that same issue when he coldly abandons Harry, who is suffering from withdrawals and begging Peter to stay, in order to settle his score with the Goblin. It is no coincidence that Norman himself, too, left his son to his own devices despite his fragile state to instead pursue revenge on his enemy in the issue prior. Peter mimicking this action is a stark contrast to his usual behavior towards Harry, whose vulnerability he is (unlike Norman) typically ready to accommodate when push comes to shove, whom he is ready to listen to and be considerate of when he's not too caught up in Spider-Man business to notice a conversation is overdue.
Peter at his absolute lowest is a lot like his greatest enemy - not just in how ruthlessly violent he gets, but in how he dives into his own rage and prioritizes satisfying it over what actually matters most. Peter's responsibility lies not solely in restraining himself from being led to irreversible actions by his own pain, but also in showing compassion and tenderness and humility to the people he cares about. And Norman is his polar opposite in both regards.
This example shows that even when Harry's presence in a storyline is largely passive, his very existence points to the things that define Peter and Norman as foes and as people. It matters that this contrast revolved around Harry specifically, the weakling son Norman is ashamed of, the kindhearted if frail best friend Peter admires. Because Harry's softness is the kind of thing that requires a sense of responsibility entirely removed from power fantasy.

okay. round up of lingering protocol thoughts/predictions before the patreon early release tomorrow and the wide release on thursday. I did listen to the pilot draft back in october, but the following takes are only about publicly available information, I'll save anything else for later this week.
the title. "the magnus archives" wasn't just the main location of the original show, it was integral for the framing device of every episode and the meat of the protagonist's journey. if this title functions at all similarly, then "the magnus protocol" means, well, the protocol to follow in the event of "magnus." this implies to me that a main force behind the plot is going to be the OIAR responding to Something that happens with their world's burnt down magnus institute, and that following set rules and codes will be a major theme. less passive observation and cataloging, more the unstoppable force of bureaucracy.
same vibes for "vigilo. audio. opperior." (I watch. I listen. I wait.) vs "non vacillabimus" (we will not falter). to me, a promise not to falter implies steadfast action in the face of resistance as opposed to passive absorption of experiences.
I am still pulling for agnes relevance. lowri ann davies playing celia ripley, "celia" being the name her archives character chose after losing her memory, that character's strange interaction with a fire ghost woman. if we presume this is the same universe as the one the statement giver came from in mag 114, the tree at hilltop road was still standing when she crossed over, implying agnes was still alive over there as of 2009. jonny's comments in q&as about wishing he has done a little bit more with agnes. it could happen.
I. I've been sitting here trying to figure out a take for what's up with gwendolyn bouchard because her connection to elias obviously has to be relevant somehow, but I've got nothing. archives verse elias was meant to be middle aged (at least in body) by the time of the show and my guess is that gwen's in her 20s so she might be a younger sister? a cousin? theoretically possible that she could be a daughter but the idea of elias raising children in either his original or jonah forms makes my brain return a 404 error. don't like that.

Just a reminder of why I am here, lest you think I actually believe a certain Dumb Fuck from Boston is actually reading this blog.
In case it wasn't obvious, addressing specific posts to a particular person is but a literary device (such that it is on Tumblr). This blog is a way for me to scream into a void and if you don't like what I have to say, please respectfully leave and try to refrain from misrepresenting me on other blogs. I may not be your cup of tea, but I will not be minimized.
What I am screaming into the void about:
Mr. Dumb Fuck roped us all into this by trying to convince us he is stunningly happy in a relationship when it is obvious to almost anyone he is not (and if he is, he has to be the most toxic boyfriend/hubby ever). He even tried to help his cause by doing a bad job on purpose, but that act to save himself came crashing down on those who called out the Emperor who had no clothes, hard. Because when we pointed out the many obvious inconsistencies, we were branded as crazy, stupid and jealous. Then there is the gaslighting with changing timelines, photoshopped pictures, ghost sightings/weddings, poorly acted jump scares and general mindfuckery. He can't now un-invite us to the party because he doesn't like what we are saying. We will defend ourselves from lies and manipulation and not accept the negative labels thrust upon us. Too often, women are dismissed for being irrational and this stunt highlights the incredibly antiquated and misogynist trope.
The little wifey is an awful person and by tying himself to her like this he tacitly provides his approval to her racism, antisemitism, fatshaming, arrogance, immaturity, clout-chasing and entitlement, forever. That hypocrisy cannot go unnoticed considering his former stance on these subjects and his role as the face of the insipid ASP. I am a member of a few of the groups the wifey and her crew target so no one gets to tell me I am taking this too seriously or I am being too sensitive. As Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona discussed during a recent talk on an unimportant, ego stroking website, passiveness normalizes destructive behaviors and beliefs toward marginalized communities, at a time when we in those communities feel unseen or unprotected.
The fact that he looks absolutely miserable, with no light in his eyes, and discusses his life as if it is not his own is more than a little unnerving. This is in no way to shame him, but rather out of a genuine concern for his wellbeing. If I were to encounter someone on the street acting like he did as described in the near career ending GQ article, I would be compelled to call someone to assist this man in distress. And I don't buy the excuse of "he's just tired" or "he is working hard".  He is running from who he has become and doesn't know where to go.  These posts are a way for me to work out frustration of not being able to help someone who is in clear need of it.  And yeah, maybe it is none of my business, but just as if I ran into the GQ version of him on the street, I couldn't just stand by and do nothing.
This circus also shows how his behavior parallels the issues of the world at large and how we accept things we shouldn't. We have kept quiet about unchecked privlege, intent vs. impact, performative activism, being child-like vs. childish, ageism, greed and corruption, mental illness and wellness, self awareness, the power and weaponry of sexuality, toxic masculinity and misogyny, generational wealth, integrity, alternative facts and emotional truths, misinformation and disinformation, imbalance of power, value placed on hard work, attributes of healthy relationships, preciousness of time, and the effects we have on our fellow mortals, all of which has got us to now, on the brink of societal destruction. And we see this epitomized in the microcosm of this shitshow. I use this blog and the unlikely, fucked up muse that inspired it to think about how we all cultivate our points of view and perhaps pressure test what they really mean to us and how we express them in our daily lives. Others who find my blog may feel lost and alone, as we all do at times, in need of some comfort or inspiration. While the quotes, infographics and articles may be very pointed, they are there for everyone to enjoy and interpret. The Song of the Day, however, is purely about me and what I woke up singing or feeling. Nothing to do with BDF, but still for everyone to appreciate.
So that's about it. I hope you have more clarity about what I am trying to accomplish and again, if you wish to be negative, you can see yourself out. Thank you! 👋

I agree so hard with your post. Something you didn't mention, is that that plot is there at all because of the source material. What do you think of Queen Guinevere compared to Gwen? Because I think that while the legendary figure may not be the passive "ideal" wife, she's endured for a reason. While Gwen, is more defined by what she didn't actually do and by Arthur's love interest.
I’m so sorry, I think I’m answering this days late I honestly didn’t see it! I never get asks. And this will probably make no sense (raging headache), but here goes.
I definitely think the only reason the bbc writers included the adultery plot is because it is such a major part of Queen Guinevere’s characterization in Arthuriana. In earlier stories she’s usually with Mordred, but in later legends she’s depicted as having this epic romance with Lancelot. One thing I do really enjoy about the historical context of that is that because she’s a married woman, she actually has the ability to pursue lovers outside of her marriage bed. “Courtly Love” was never about dashing knights and fair maidens; it was about sexual autonomy that could be afforded to married women if they found themselves sexually or romantically unsatisfied. I feel that Guinevere was in part written to appeal to women. And, I mean, I know that even within that context she’s often characterized as either a loyal and diplomatic wife and Queen, or as a usurping harlot that can’t get rid of her husband fast enough. And people will still judge her for that just as they would Gwen. So while I absolutely adore Queen Guinevere and all that she is and could be, I do find that a lot of the older legends don’t always do they very best at characterizing her as a stand-alone figure. It’s usually Arthur and Guinevere, or Lancelot and Guinevere. As though she doesn’t really exist outside of her connections to men. Thankfully, more recent literature has developed her beyond her relationships to men. And either way, old or new stories alike (well, I mean apart from the kidnapping stories that are common in Arthuriana), she is depicted as having a plenty of autonomy in choice of a lover.
BBC, for some unknown reason, decided Gwen was forbidden the dreaded ‘A’ word.
I also just want to say, I think Guinevere and Lancelot have persevered to be this cultural phenomenon in the same vein as Romeo and Juliet. People just wrote them as being magnetic; they were epic and tragic. And I remember being, like, 12 years old and seeing some illustration of when Guinevere is sentenced to death for adultery and while the flames rise around her Lancelot cuts down his own comrades to save her. Because as poetic as courtly love is, and as fantastical to a woman in the medieval ages would find this beautiful & powerful heroine who dared desire someone who wasn’t her own husband, Guinevere was kept in check by the misogynistic society in which she lived. Monogamy was really only something that it was considered integral for women to engage in; a marriage to a woman meant possession of her body (and yeah, of course this also has to do with line of succession, but I really don’t want to go into a tangent about exclusive mating rights with a figure that is most often portrayed as infertile). Which is why the rebellion that Guinevere did against that is so cool. Lancelot was noticeably not burning at the stake, and being Lancelot he, well, betrayed his king and friend (and I always figured that Lancelot loved Arthur) again and saved Guinevere because as he sees it she is no more guilty than he is and he couldn’t let her die for their shared transgression. And that illustration has fucking stuck with me for 15 years as the epitome of everything.
So yeah, unfortunately Gwen was mostly a plot device. I love her to bits, but it soon becomes apparent as the show goes on that she doesn’t exist because she must exist and her journey is integral. She’s there simply because they figured they needed a Guinevere for authenticity. Just like they decided they needed the cheating plotline: for authenticity. It was just another plot to throw in there, but because the plot doesn’t truly come from the depths of that character’s soul…it falls flat. And it’s just bad 😖.
And I know that Angel and Santiago could have eaten up that adultery arc. Every time they were on screen together I literally felt like a had cinderblocks on my chest, the chemistry was suffocating.
And to make the day! @thesongistheriver pointed out that Gwen barely passes the Bechdel test post series 1. So the writers gave her barely any women confidants, killed her family, used her as a plot device, took away her autonomy, and then had the gaul to characterize her as so one dimensional and moral that ‘she did this things but no she really didn’t, because if she really did she wouldn’t be likeable anymore’. Bullshit, the main character killed someone every episode and people swallowed it.

Researchers develop new integration technique for efficient coupling of III-V and silicon
Researchers at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) have developed a new integration technique for efficient integration of III-V compound semiconductor devices and silicon, paving the way for photonic integration at low cost, large volume, and high speed and throughput that could revolutionize data communications. Unlike conventional integrated circuits, or microchips, that use electrons, photonic integrated circuits use photons, or particles of light. Photonic integration combines light and electronics to speed up data transfer. Silicon photonics (Si-photonics), in particular, is at the forefront of this revolution as it enables the creation of high-speed, low-cost connections that can handle massive amounts of data at once. While silicon can handle passive optical functions, it struggles with active tasks, such as generating light (lasers) or detecting it (photodetectors)—both key components for data generation and readout. This necessitates the integration of III-V semiconductor (which uses materials from groups III and V of the periodic table) onto a silicon substrate for complete functionality and enhanced efficiency.

Is present Pluto the same person as simil Pluto? Or did she get reincarnated as Setsuna and reassumed the role of Pluto?
Nope, there’s just one Pluto.
I’ve stated before my hcs for Pluto make her a totally different character than in canon. Not personality-wise really, but mostly her role and who she is.
Long story short, she’s an omniscient being playing a seemingly passive role in the narrative, but she has a very tangible presence.
I don’t wanna reveal her role in the story quite yet, but she’s not as much a character, as she is a “plot device”, but no less memorable.
Unfortunately when factoring her and Saturn I have to go one of two ways since in canon they are not much ‘characters’ per se as they are plot devices and I’m sorry to say it, but it’s true.
It’s either I take what’s given to me in canon and I try to expand on them and make them fully fleshed out characters though and through while incorporating them into the team in a more organic and compelling way or I go all out with the ‘plot device’ angle.
With Saturn I find a happy middle, but I’m only able to do so cause she never joins the team and dies at the end of my hc season 3.
I respect people who go all out and integrate them fully into the team and make me care a lot about them as a part of the main group, but unfortunately it doesn’t really work for me. There’s just too many characters already to dedicate a healthy amount of screen time and development and I’d hate to add members to the team just for the sake of it, there’s a TON of factors I put in when considering the ‘main sailor team’ and Hotaru and Setsuna just didn’t fit organically within the narrative I wanna tell.
My AU is mostly a ensemble, so that makes it even trickier.

for that ask game you reblogged! I'm curious how you picked the roles for the extra characters in The Thrones of Stars, or any other behind the scenes sneak peeks you have to share from there |・ω・)
Sorry for the late response!! Thank you for this ask so much :)
For anyone curious, here's the story! It's a novelization of the Hoshimeguri no Kansokusha (eng: The Throne of the Stellar) event from 2018, but I worked hard to make it so that anyone could read it without any knowledge of the event or even the source material!
Now, here's the answers to your questions: (Some spoilers beneath the cut)
For the supporting cast + ZOOL, it sort of worked out from a base of an idea that I got from @zekkun-shion's post about ZOOL in Hoshimeguri, which I felt was a good start to build off of! I obviously changed some of the roles and ideas, but having each of them split up between the four main planets that aren't Eterno and Mistero made it easier to integrate them into the world. Another take I discovered while in the middle of writing The Thrones of Stars was @ enargeia's (Ao3, not Tumblr) story about ZOOL being on the various moons surrounding the main stars, which I thought was super awesome and cool! I didn't integrate any of that into my story aside from a few brief mentions of moons surrounding the stars, but it's something that's stuck in my mind and I love all the creative ways people try to put them into this story!
Now, as for the rest of the supporting cast, it was a little more vibes-based. I went with Tsumugi being on Lama because of this piece by @umii7love, since the outfit was so cool that it felt like a shame not to (I love her in the color green; she looks great!)
Rinto got put into the role as the blacksmith from the original story, since I didn't really love how the blacksmith treated Hope in the original story when he was more or less acting as a stand-in parental figure for the month before Hope decided to look for Curse. I figured that the visual of Rinto being the blacksmith was a little funny, but his personality and ability to handle Hope felt like a good match. Also, reunite Re:vale on Eterno! That's fun!
Kaoru was put on Sirena because I was looking between Alba and Sirena and I really wanted to make it seem like Carnelian was isolated and lonely, especially because a lot of his ideas in the original story come to fruition because he has no one to tell him no or to even think things through. I also felt that putting Kaoru with Sirena was a fun dichotomy, since even on the most relaxed planet, she's still busting her ass to get things done. Lastly, it was an aesthetic choice! I felt her pink hair would go really well with the general Sirenan aesthetic of bright and colorful, so her fate was sealed there.
Aya was put with Minami on Sirena, but her origin being Lama was something I used to help fuel some of the relationships between Orion and Sardinia and their respective stars. I wanted to show that immigration between stars was something that did occur, but not very often, and that people's nationalistic (? is it nationalism if it's for a planet, not a nation?) tendencies made them feel baffled at the very idea of leaving even a civil war-torn country for one living in peace. She serves a few different roles, which kind of ties into the fact that she's a plot device in i7 proper initially, but she also definitely grew into her own character quickly.
That leaves Shirou and Banri, who I put with Burst Roar for two different reasons. Shirou doesn't like. Do Much in the story itself, but that's also sort of the point of his character. He exists passively to cover everything Fang and the rest of Burst Roar isn't focusing on so that nothing gets neglected, so while they're dealing with an interstellar crisis, he's making sure their finances are in order. It's a sort of position that I wanted to give to a character that would make a fun cameo, but for anyone that's an anime-only and doesn't know him yet, then they're not going to feel too alienated. Banri, on the other hand, was put with Burst Roar because of a few things that are tied to the ending of the story that I have not published! I explain it pretty well in the narrative itself why he's with Burst Roar, but from a meta standpoint, it just Made Sense to me, and also him being a pilot felt like a relaxed role where people can approach him for advice at any time, but his job isn't to give advice quite like Tsumugi or Kaoru do.
With any characters I didn't mention that are part of the supporting cast, they fall into two categories: Exists in a small on-screen part, or exists off-screen for a role in one of my sequels. Otoharu falls into the first category, making a small cameo as Tsumugi's father on Lama, but his role is so small that I didn't think tagging him was appropriate. Meanwhile, Yaotome Papa and Ryo are both in the second category, with Yaotome Papa being name dropped as King Rigel, but he's never seen on screen, and Ryo's character name has yet to be revealed for a variety of reasons.
I wanted to push the narrative beyond what canon had to offer because these worlds that i7 gave me as a base allowed me to make some really fun lore and politics that feels wasteful to leave behind with just a novelization, so I'm hoping to use them some more when I write my original sequels working off of The Throne of Stars. For a lot of these supporting characters, their roles will be bigger in the sequels too, since I could only hollow out so much space in the original story for them.
As for a sneak peek scene, I guess I could allow a small piece!
Photographs like snowflakes fall from fingers onto the table, each of them a candid taken using some well-practiced tricks and a small hand mirror. Most of them depict at least one of two figures: a boy pretending to be a man, and a leader pretending to be a subordinate. Some photographs focus on other details, such as the blood under the boy’s fingernails or the dirt tracked on the floor far from the entrance. The assassin picks one, holding the photograph between his fingers as he drinks in the figures trapped inside. “Was there anyone else?” The other assassin nods with an easy smile, sitting back as papers shuffle between her well-manicured hands. The papers are handwritten, with small, sharp letters that detail the assassin’s observations. Most of the words are transcribed conversations held between the boy and leader, taking care to denote who was speaking by marking the speakers as “small” and “tall” respectively. A few rogue doodles, mainly of the leader, fill the margins in the way that ivy climbs up walls—decorative to some, a nuisance to others.  “Yes, clockmaker in the back.”  “No pictures?” “He didn’t come out.”  “Sad.” The assassins pick apart each others’ work, vultures gorging themselves on rotting carcasses until they’ve had their fill. It’s dirty work, but someone must do it—might as well have it be someone who can keep the dirty work neat.  “This is disappointing. It’s not worth a kill.” There are some things that aren’t worth killing, things that are too small, too weak, too unimportant. It’s a waste of time, talent, and resources. If death wants to bring more into her domain, she has plenty of other tools than the assassin lap dogs at her disposal. She is the queen eternal, ruling from her silver chair burning with the light of tortured souls. All will bow before her eventually.  “Probably not.” The assassin agrees. “Let’s head back to Escoria.” The assassins take their work with them as they melt into the night, disappearing into the miserable maw of earth that they consider their home. No trail of blood nips at their heels this time, nor the scent of death like an expensive perfume—they vanish like night being chased away from breaking dawn.  The boy and the leader may live another day.

The Triumph of Twenty Five Twenty One
Now that 2022 is coming to a close, it felt worthwhile to revisit the one show this year that shook my world and kinda shifted my perspective on life :’)
Tumblr media
It's hard to know where to begin when talking about Twenty Five Twenty One. I could start by sharing how beautifully shot this drama is, the way viewers are invited to delight in the vibrance and oftentimes loneliness of the landscape.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Or I could start with the historical context, how the drama managed to bridge the struggles of the 1997 IMF Crisis to the current pandemic.
Or I could start by marveling over the individual characters, how they come across as so genuine and real, and how they are delightfully funny and messy and truly alive.
But I think instead the best way to start by honoring what a triumph this show is - from the acting, the cinematography, the directing, the screenwriting - is by stepping back to something more abstract, namely the acquiescence and narrative empathy the show provides.
In literature (and I assume film studies as well), acquiescence refers to a viewer's accepted passivity, meaning we as the viewers become so naturally enveloped in the world presented to us that we genuinely start to feel that this place, these characters, and their stories, are all real. We forget there’s a host of camera and lighting crews watching and controlling every meticulous move.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As a result of our passivity, we begin to develop an emotional connection with the work. This is referred to as narrative empathy.
Simply put: acquiescence = viewers’ accepted passivity; narrative empathy = viewers sharing the feelings witnessed on screen
So how does Twenty Five Twenty One reach a level of acquiescence that I find unparalleled in any show or movie I've seen this year? It’s hard to exactly pinpoint one piece since our passivity and subsequent emotional investment revolves around several intermingling factors like the aforementioned cinematography and authentic characters. Personally though, I'd say what really makes Twenty Five Twenty One reach an all new high of acquiescence is the feeling-centered narrative revolving around the diary.
After all, the premise is that Kim Min Chae begins to read her mother’s diary in 2020, and slowly starts to understand her mother through the detailed entries.
Tumblr media
I initially glossed over the significance of the diary, seeing it more as a useful transition device to travel viewers back into the 1990′s whenever Min Chae was reading it, and then transporting us back to the present when we needed to see her reactions. It felt like nothing more than a simple plot device.
But there are so many scenes where the diary is important in building narrative empathy. For the sake of brevity, I’ll focus exclusively on the way the diary heightens viewers’ acquiescence and narrative empathy in the last episode.
~spoilers ahead~
After rewatching the last episode multiple times (and still crying almost as hard as the first time sjhdhsjs), I’ve found that the diary is such an integral part in conveying the drama’s intended message of remembering and living in the moment.
And even more so than that, the diary as a thematic and narrative tool is so clever, because diaries are something so incredibly personal. A diary is an output of our innermost thoughts; an intensely honest inner monologue meant for our personal retreat, unintended for the consumption of outsiders. By placing the diary in the open, by using it as a narrative device that allows us to see Hee Do’s thoughts and interpretations of the world, and by welcoming Min Chae into her mother’s youth as well, the audience develops a sense of intimacy and understanding for these characters.
Tumblr media
Nothing seems more indicative of this point than the scene in which Yi Jin starts reading Hee Do’s diary and realizes how truly lonely she was in the later stages of their relationship; how he took her support for granted.
Like Yi Jin, we are welcomed into seeing these pages for the first time, hearing Hee Do narrating the words on the page. We can’t help but feel deeply disheartened by her loneliness. As if that weren’t already enough to digest, we witness Yi Jin soak in the words and cry as he slowly makes his way through the pages. Like many emotional scenes in the show, the camera does not cut away. We are forced to sit in the pain with him for a while. This heightens our empathy for both Hee Do for having experienced such a solitary love, and Yi Jin for immersing himself in her sorrow and truly, for the first time in months, understanding her.
Tumblr media
This diary scene really brings the show’s acquiescence to another level. The intimacy of Hee Do’s words; Yi Jin reading them in the privacy of his empty room, with lingering shots on his face capturing his welling sense of grief and guilt - these are details that make this drama just feel so achingly real and powerful.
The most noteworthy use of the diary, however, is the very last scene in which Hee Do imagines how their last encounter would have been had they said the words that they saved for the diary pages instead. The added detail of including a fade-in of their writing from the diary was so incredibly touching and made this scene a whole new level of emotional. Because, like I mentioned, diaries are an honest inner monologue. Nothing they could have done could have been quite as sincere as this.
Tumblr media
Honestly it’s so beautiful that their last farewell is captured in the pages of the diary. It initially seemed unfair to have this farewell by the tunnel be a hypothetical, imagined goodbye, but the more you think about it, the more you realize how truly beautiful it is that their honesty is forever immortalized in Hee Do’s diary.
In the end, the diary served as the best parting tool - for the characters and the audience. It gave Yi Jin closure because he was able to truly understand Hee Do and respond to her. It gave Hee Do closure all those years later when she had the opportunity to read his final message. And it gives us as an audience closure because we know they’ve parted in a way that is untainted by bitterness; celebrating the love they shared, recognizing the value of cherishing every moment.
And now Hee Do, with her diary - the physical embodiment of all that ever came between them - has that right in the palms of her hands.
Tumblr media
I still struggle to understand how something so sad can be so beautiful. So profound.
All I can say is that this, for me, is what makes the show a triumph.
