Why Dubai Businesses Need To Partner With a Professional Website Development Company
In the digitally-first world of today, a good website is something that a business can't afford not to have any more. The city of Dubai is known as one of the global innovation hubs and is the home of thousands of businesses competing to receive attention in such a busy market. So, to stand out from the crowd and maintain an effective online presence, there is a need to collaborate with a professional Website Development Company in Dubai. Here are several reasons why the businesses of Dubai should do this.
1. Expertise and Innovation at one's Fingertips
The skilled teams of designers, developers, and digital strategists man the professional website development companies in Dubai. Keeping themselves updated with the latest technologies and best practices prevalent within the industry are all their pursuits. The accessibility of such expertise means having a website which is visually attractive yet functionally adequate, user-friendly as well as technologically state-of-the-art. While digitalizing your presence, one would find all that brought into play by deploying AI-driven chatbots and responsive designs.
2. Custom Websites for Local and International Readers
Dubai companies service diverse audiences, both locally and in other parts of the globe. A professional website development service will therefore understand the characteristics of the Dubai market-place, including cultural sensitiveness, consumer preferences, among others. They can always come up with customized websites responding to your target audience effectively, ensuring a seamless flow of user experience that causes engagement and conversion.
3. UX or better User Experience
User experience determines the success of a website. A website which is not designed well will lead to frustration from visitors, who then leave, causing a higher bounce rate and missed opportunities for sales. Professional developers emphasize intuitive navigation, fast loading pages, and mobile-friendliness of the designs. These together make for a great user journey which keeps visitors engaging and likely to take the desired action such as purchasing or contacting your business.
4. Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
However beautiful your website might look, it is worthless if nobody can find it. Web Development Company in Dubai always factor in SEO best practice when developing, such as optimization of page speeds and meta tags, ensuring that your website is mobile-friendly and also clean coding. They are constantly improving your search engine ranking. More visibility brings more organic traffic or leads and sales.
5. Cost-Effective in the Long Run
A well-developed website minimizes the risk of technical issues, reduces maintenance costs, and ensures scalability as your business grows. Additionally, a professional website helps generate higher returns by attracting and retaining customers more effectively.
6. Focus on Core Business Activities
When outsourcing Web Development Company in UAE needs, you have more time to focus on core business activities. Professional companies handle everything from the initial design and development stages of a website through maintenance and updates, thus providing one with more time and resources to devote to important matters like customer service, marketing, and business expansion.
7. Support and Maintenance
Websites need to update and maintain themselves regularly. Otherwise, they get outdated and insecure. A professional website development company keeps providing support to solve problems, implement updates, and keep your website running perfectly. This proactive approach may avoid downtime and keep running your website smoothly, with a seamless experience for the users.
8. Competitive Advantage
Competition in the market is at its peak here in Dubai, and therefore, designing a professional website for yourself will keep you miles ahead of the competition. Well-performance of the website lends an impression of your business and brand with respectability and professionalism to your customer who tends to associate them. With this, your position further gets stabilized by strengthening their trust on your self.
Conclusion
In terms of succeeding in the currently trending digital world, a company of Dubai would need to enter partnership with a professional website development agency. Starting from providing solutions tailor-suited according to the client's business needs to improving the customer's experience and providing post-launch support so that you lead the market, these professional website development agencies are quite the backbone of your thriving business. This investment in professional website development will help you have a good standing online but also in generating long-term growth and profits.

There is a potential source of confusion in that the search page doesn't have the "exclude" filters. You have to filter by (aka: click on) a tag, fandom, relationship, etc and then use the Filters button.
But it does.
#ao3 has some holdovers from web 1.0 design philosophy#where you're expected to have a certain amount of curiosity and tech literacy and apply that to learn how the interface works#as opposed to social media companies that serve you everything through a predatory algorithm#i think it's important to remember we're in an era where there's active efforts to crush that old internet (and library) ethos for profit#and younger people often weren't taught to navigate the internet the same way we learned to as millennials#this stuff is not intuitive and we shouldn't assume it is just because we understand it

Zestial the Spymaster Overlord
Hazbin Masterpost
Heavenbound AU
I went through quite a few rounds of rough designs for this. I was initially aiming for a 1400s vibe, but after looking at many reference photos, I ended up settling on early to mid 1600s.
More notes under the cut
So it's not totally clear how old Zestial is in canon. He has an older style of speaking, but his speech patterns suggest a Shakespearean time frame. Which also coincides with when the King James Version(KJV) of the Bible was released. I grew up with the KJV, so I think I have a fairly intuitive grasp on how to use all the thees and thous, particularly since he's probably been influenced by the evolution of language over time. So I have a plausible excuse for it to be somewhat modernized as well.
I saw a completely unrelated design for this Puritan guy, and I thought it was really cool and used it as inspiration. I know nothing about it, but I found a website for it that you can check out HERE
So Zestial is Puritan now. He was a witch hunter who would falsely accuse people he didn't like. And actually practiced witchcraft himself. For anyone unaware, witchcraft is not inherently gendered. It's not wizard=boy, witch=girl. Men could be and have been accused of being witches historically.
Because I went with a puritan background, his design is relatively simple. It's reminiscent of a stereotypical cloak over plain dark clothes, with the white collar and large cuffs.
The colors are halloween themed because puritan witch trials give me halloween vibes. So we've got purple(almost black), orange, and green. I made him a bit smokey(his hair, and at his feet) because I felt it fit his shadowy vibe, while also being different from Alastor's shadowy vibe. And because I thought it would be cool.
--Bat and Spider--
I know canon Zestial is spider themed, but he gives such dracula vibes, so I had to incorporate some bat too. His cloak is like bat wings mixed with spider legs. He closes the cloak by folding his arms like a bat. And the orange is similar to the Painted Bat (aka halloween bat).
I did tone down his giant spider...tie(?) because it got in the way. But it seemed pretty iconic to him, so I didn't want to totally get rid of it.
--Zestial vs Alastor--
I think a lot of Zestial's power lies in his information network. A web of information, if you will. He's got really good hearing to listen to all the juicy secrets to blackmail with. He's something of a spyder with his web of information. I'm not even sorry about the puns.
In terms of raw power, Alastor is more powerful and ruthless. He's more bloodthirsty in general. Zestial is more of an extortionist.
Alastor prides himself on being an enigma, and doesn't want anyone to figure out what he's up to. In that way, Zestial's skill in information gathering is a threat. The two are actually pretty similar(with their whole dark and mysterious and powerful shtick). They aren't openly hostile to each other(actually on pretty good terms), but they aren't friends by any means. Alastor prefers to keep his distance.
Alastor's overlord killing spree was largely on the command of his soul-owner,[SPOILER], who determined most of the targets. And Zestial is very cordial with [SPOILER], so he is lucky enough to be the only Old Order Overlord to be spared. Lately, he's effectively retired and mostly acts as a sort of advisor/mentor for Carmilla. Otherwise, Alastor would have killed him already due to the threat of uncovering secrets.
--Human Zestial--
Name: I chose Ezekiel as his name because it fits the naming patterns of the puritans. They liked biblical names and "grace names"(like Faith or Charity. But they could get more obscure like Patience, Tenacious, or even Humiliation; and could get even more bizarre still, like Fly-Fornication).
Hair: I gave him long, more cavalier hair because I liked it. And it's not unheard of for a puritan to have long hair. The mustache and beard are typical of the time period. His hair is greying because I imagine him being older. It was a dark brown when he was younger though.
Clothes: I went with the more stereotypical dark clothes, but avoided the buckles because those weren't actually typical for puritans. Also a doublet and jerkin combo, because that's what I kept seeing in pictures.
--background--
Life: He was a prolific witch hunter. He would find any suitable excuse to accuse the people he didn't like. He was selective with his targets, mostly going after people he felt the world was better without. His judgment had nothing to do with his victims' association with witches, because he practiced witchcraft himself. Witch trials were just the opportunity he needed to get rid of people in a socially acceptable way. He was well mannered and respected in the community, so few people doubted or challenged his accusations.
He went after people who were criminals, murderers, heretics, etc. He thought he was justified in ridding the world of these "terrible" people(like Frollo). He used witchcraft to find people and reasons to remove them from society. Unfortunately, he did occasionally have to remove people who simply discovered his witchcraft, even children. All for his perceived greater good.
Death: I haven't really decided. It could be he was finally found out as a witch and hung. Or he got sick. Or somebody got revenge and killed him. IDK, take your pick.
Afterlife: He had to come to terms with the fact that he landed himself in hell, despite believing he was justified and doing a righteous service. But he eventually determined sacrificing his chance at heaven was worth ridding earth of vile people. Now he doesn't have to feel guilty for killing innocent people, because those don't exist in hell. He's come to enjoy the terror of sinners. He sees himself as better than them.
Because he practiced witchcraft in life, he was considered significantly powerful for a new arrival. But his real power was in his ability to gather information. So he worked his way to Overlord, primarily through blackmail and extortion in exchange for souls.
Alastor's arrival and the consequent shift in power dynamics threw everyone for a loop. Zestial is very curious about Alastor's unprecedented rise to power. But is constantly thwarted in his attempts to gather information, which just piques his interest further.
Over the centuries, he's come to accept that there can be a greater good in hell too. He found a like-minded soul in Carmilla, and decided to retire in favor of mentoring her. She wants to protect her daughters above all else, and he respects her commitment to her duty.
----Bonus historical research time(don't quote me, it was just light research)----
--Roundhead vs Cavalier--
These were political factions of the time, and not strictly tied to puritanism. It was essentially Parliament supporters and Monarchy supporters.
Parliamentarians rejected King Charles I and were nicknamed Roundheads due to the general tendency to have short hair(basically a bowl cut). Puritans fell into this group along with a wide range of social classes and religious dissidents.
Royalists were derisively called Cavaliers, but they adopted the term for themselves. They believed in the King's divine right to rule. They were mostly upper class and known for long hair and courtly fashions.
--Puritan--
Puritans broke off of the Anglican church, believing it to still be tainted by Catholic ritualism. They emphasized simplicity and modesty. But that didn't mean low-quality. They believed wealth was gifted by God, so dressing below your station was inappropriate. Embellishments in clothing were not unusual, they just rejected excess of extravagance. There were a lot of other rules that probably wouldn't make sense to us.
Point is, they dressed relatively plain. Stereotypically this meant black, blue, grey, or russet clothing. But that wasn't universal or anything. Black is actually more of a "Sunday best" type of outfit, since the color can fade pretty quickly in the sun. I think the ministers wore black fairly regularly...?
Typical garb for men consisted of a shirt with a large collar and cuffs, a doublet(padded jacket), sometimes a jerkin (sleeveless jacket worn over the doublet), breeches(short pants) tied in place with garters, stockings, and simple shoes.

- -> “Y/N, where exactly were you last night?” “Oh, uh…I was with, um, April.” “That’s funny…considering April was with us!”
- It didn’t really shock him to find out you had a big secret, what did shock him is what that secret is
- He’s also a little hurt that you didn’t tell him. Don’t you trust him??? But that wasn’t his biggest concern
- “Wait, so like…spider woman as in like, big mama kind of spider woman?” NO-
- You would have to really explain it to him
- But let’s be real, he still wouldn’t understand so you’d have to show him by like climbing up the fucking wall or something
- But he really does think your powers are super sick
- Laughs when you try to explain your spidey senses -> “wait, you’re serious?”
- ^ calls them your “tingly thing”
- maybe you can web his fucking mouth shut
- LOVES your suit, thinks you look stunning and super awesome
- “You know, I always said that was your color Y/N!”
- Invites you to patrol with them! (then he doesn’t have to do as much)
- thinks you’re so hot when you fight (NOT IN A FREAKY WAY YOU FREAKS) and hypes you up
- freaks tf out if he ever gets a web on him, including if you were to swing with him to get out of harms way
- doesn’t ask for them, but he can’t deny he likes the iconic Spider-Man kisses
Mikey
- would just straight up ask if you’re hiding something. Dr.Delicate touch DOES NOT PLAY ‼️
- Of course this would be something you’re hesitant about, but he would remind you that you can confide in him
- Def was not expecting THIS.
- He is asking you a million questions all at once, and will sit nicely and listen as you explain with starry eyes (stop lookin at me with them big ole eyes)
- You’re #1 fan and biggest hype man
- Thinks you’re the coolest person ever fr
- Wants to swing around on your webs with you. Around NYC, in the lair, in Donnie’s lab, on missions, it doesn’t matter he WANTS it.
- THE ICONIC SPIDER-MAN KISSES ALL THE TIME ITS HIS FAVORITE WAY TO KISS YOU NOW
- weirdly interested in your webs 🕸️
- Compliments your suit anytime you wear it around him; thinks your mask is so so cute
- ^ in his free time he’ll sketch and color new suit designs to show you (also just drawings and paintings of you in your suit)
Donnie
- isn’t going to pry any secrets from you; but he does secretly wish you’d come to him on your own.
- so you can imagine his gratitude and relief when you finally tell him what’s up
- Doesn’t really say anything about it, but he doesn’t get why you didn’t just tell him sooner. I mean, you do know he’s a hero too, right?
- he’s fascinated, he’s never seen anything like your powers before. especially because you’re not a mutant.
- really just asks questions about how it all works. Your webs, how you stick to surfaces, your enhanced senses, the whole deal yk?
- He did NOT like big mama’s webs, and he doesn’t really like yours either I’m so sorry.
- ^if he needs them, would ask to use some like he did with Big Mama’s
- It’s not you I swear he just can’t do it
- you could like climb all over his lab ceiling and walls and scare the shit out of him tho
- ^ “Y/N get down this instant! WE TALKED ABOUT THIS-“
- admires your enhanced senses and intuition of danger
- is absolutely gonna make gear for you, as well as offering to make upgrades to your suit
- wouldn’t really directly say it, but he really likes the design of your suit. it just fits you so well. (he IS going to make a purple one for you)
- would scream if you ever just dropped down in front of him to kiss him spider man style
- ^ traumatized; it’s not his favorite thing but he doesn’t mind terribly
Raph
- might take him a while to notice if something is off about you. Leo or Mikey would probably have to directly point it out for him to realize fully
- Isn’t going to beat around the bush and just asks why you’re acting lowkey shady
- really shocked, might take him a second to process even if he doesn’t really know exactly what you mean at first
- honestly he understands why you keep it a secret, just a little saddened that you kept it from him
- He’s gonna need you to really explain your powers
- “…where do the webs come out of tho?”
- would deepen your bond and connection. you can really relate to each other carrying a deep burden and the pressure of responsibility.
- AMAZING DUO with his strength and your agility
- very good hype man
- takes you on most missions and patrols, thinks you’re a really valuable asset to the team
- also calls your spider senses your “tingly thing”
- it’s not that he doesn’t like your webs, something about them just make him nervous. Refuses to let you swing him on them unless he’s in immediate danger.
- does NOT let you crawl around the lair walls, he’s scared you’ll hurt yourself
- ^ “Y/N! You’re gonna hurt yourself, GET DOWN!”
- really thinks you look so pretty in your special suit, he just doesn’t know how to say without feeling like he sounds dumb. He would DIE if it was red.
- “ I really…er, like your costume.”
- very supportive! he gets the struggle of protecting the city, but is happy you get to do it beside each other. :D
- he likes the spidey kisses, they just really fluster him

Had an intrusive thought that turned into what might be an interesting question:
I'm a game developer, and I've found myself fascinated with your particular taste in puzzle games. however, I'm a leaky eared imbecile whose skills lie more in the design of intuitive high speed action games, and find the most complexity I can handle with my puzzle games are positioning based starategy games like Into the Breach.
I love making movement micromechanics like coyote time and walljump distance buffering, but my brain turns to soup when I have to apply that interconnected web of mechanics into something with more intent than feeding intuitive twitch reactions that I can't figure out how to turn such a thing into engaging puzzles without it just becoming a kaizo skill check.
my question is, what would you reccomend as something to pursue with these skills in mind? I think you'd have an interesting insight
It sounds like you want to make a game about TASing, or something. Turn based platformer controls are weird but they can be made intuitive, you could let the player trigger "collision detection errors" under certain conditions which is actually a controlled mechanic that gives you a boost or lets you occupy the same space as something else for a turn, for puzzle hijinks. Get two boxes to clip & they locomote. idk. this ask is a little unclear.

Pluto in Aquarius Resource Pack:
I don't know who needs to hear these, but I think it's best to have these things as of late when concerning the transition into Pluto in Aqua. If AI is increasingly running the show, we must go back to our human ways in order for us to keep ourselves sane. These are but some of the tools I have in stock to help us through it, and I thought I might share. They may become very useful down the line if the internet becomes far more decentralized and local.
(EDIT AS OF 12/12/2024 (gasp! angel number day!)) My request: reshare this and link it to whoever needs it most or is inspired by it most. I think this may help to soothe some stresses and woes. My viewers and those that come across this post are my most important people. Thank you for also seeing my stuff as per usual and give me a follow for more if you're interested (even if I may repost some gravity falls stuff so if you're also keen on that, keep a looskie out for it). I'm so happy I'm making a reach with my stuff and I want to continue. Pluto in Aqua has lit a fire under my ass for content related to it and I hope to be a sort of 'lax-messenger about it to my peeps on the web. Y'all are amazing and thank you for the support!
more under the cut
Literature...
Some books to help you gradually ease into this collective shake up:
Cal Newport's Digital Minimalism (and Slow Productivity) Might I suggest using these texts to help you navigate this digital dark time. One to use for digital regression and one for staying sane in your WFH space.
The Transcendent Brain: Spirituality in The Age of Science by Alan Lightman This one was a quick pick that I channeled while at work. Haven't read it yet, but it poses a good disposition to the Pluto in Aqua transit for some odd intuitive reason.
Trick Mirror by Jia Tolentino It's an anthology that describes to us what the algorithmic design of social media does to its people -- and women namely. If you want a book to capture your attention and also somewhat be part of a send-off to Neptune in Pisces next year, this will be a perfect book to look at.
7 Habits Collection (Of highly effective people and highly effective teens -- Sean & Stephen R. Covey) If you're looking to game up your humanity skills, whether younger or older (both are good refresh books), take a good gander at each for reference. May help you out more than good due to the Saturnian nature of Aquarius.
Originals: How Non-Conformists Move The World by Adam Grant If you're stuck on your capability to innovate, or have art block like a motherfucker, this is a book for those in need of a motivational boost for this Pluto Transit. Highly recommend!
Liberalism And It's Discontents by Francis Fukuyama Knowing that political systems have started to fall apart (communism, capitalism and many others), then this is a good place to start giving yourself ideas on what to support or what parties to make (if you're a political science major, PLEASE read Fukuyama's work I beg you). The systems that we've seen historically do not work anymore. We have to innovate whether we like it or not. Save the nostalgia for culture and at-home indulgences. Involving it with politics kills a system.
Robert Greene's 'The Daily Laws': 366 Meditations on Power, Seduction, Mastery, Strategy, and Human Nature There's an entry a day within this book. The author recommends to read it EVERY DAY. Introspection is also healthy under this Pluto in Aqua transit. You must do so from a detached perspective in order to be successful. If you missed at least 3 days or however many, read however many you've missed. A good challenge for every year. Easy new year's resolution goal or just a good routine add on that shouldn't take you more than 10 minutes to do.
Websites...
Some places online to get you in those smaller, private networks
When it comes to spacehey, you'll find things you'd never be able to on that site. I mainly use mine for blogging books I've read and cooking stuff. I'm in a mom-blogging era put it this way (I'm an auntie of two, a niece and a new half-great-nephew. I love my position in life right now).
P.O.I. (points of interest) concerning Neocities:
In searching by tag: searchengine, japanese, 90s, 2000s, comic, (insert big city name here)
There is a bunch. If y'all want me to make a monthly newsletter on neocities websites and what I've found, i guess i can make another blog for it so I can post my findings there. Keep a look out!
use in tandem with what you've learned from Cal Newport's Slow Productivity
Entertainment...
For those going the economic route:
ROKU's & any true 'FREE Tv Streaming service' available. Good to have these in economically strife-d times.
Ofc YouTube being close second. (not yt. premium)
(START WATCHING LONG FORM CONTENT YALL)
Not to also mention: If you have a video game system that still takes discs for content (like the PS4 and Xbox 360/ONE), you can convert them into a DVD streaming platform. If not that, it's already enabled, start collecting/owning some content of your own. Go to the thrift shops. Go to the supermarket and look for the analog option. Shop eBay. Go on Etsy. ANALOG FTW
If you're going for anything news based, consider also going for newspapers -- make going for a newspaper cool again! Even better if it's local or independent!
SHOPPING:
ofc go for reuseable bags. use the coupon deals at the stores. read the coupons that the cashier gives you and see what you can do with them. tax exemptions don't count sadly enough. get a Costco membership and shop in bulk (still, remember the economic options of going for those deals)
side topic: FOOD & COOKING:
opt for making your own cookbooks and write them somewhere that can be looked back on when you get the chance. It's always useful to have something like that on hand. That way you and neither your family forget the recipes that brought you together.
In a sense:
Stick it to the big man and go for the cheaper, less expensive option (and stick to them)
Learn skills on your own terms
Read, Read, Read, Learn, Learn, Learn
Turn off your phone and laptop, keep them in the office (unless your phone IS the alarm) and opt for the Television or a piece of paper.
Connect with gaming in a communal or skill-based sense. Go for card games. Daily newspaper games too. Think northernlion when he does various trivia games online.
Pluto in Aqua may yet have more in store for us, but in current times, this seems to be (to what I think) is best for us.
Rely on your community, rely on yourself. The world is an infinitely chaotic place, but so as long as we have one another, we'll make it through.
#astrology#pluto in aquarius#astro community#resource pack#stick it to the man#fuck the political systems#we need each other#keep it 100#keep it chill

Mango v. LingQ v. Anki
I’ve been using the above apps for a while now and I couldn’t find a ton of somewhat easy to understand comparisons/explanations of how to use these various cult favorites. I figured I would make one if anyone is wondering where to start or making a departure from Duolingo.
Standard langblr disclaimer: I am ultimately just a person on the internet, I’m not an expert in language learning or a world renowned polyglot. I’m not even an expert in any of these apps/programs. These are all just thoughts and opinions I have about the value of each app to myself as an average consumer trying to learn a language and intended to help other people decide where to spend their time.
Anki
Anki is an open source spaced repetition flashcard program. It has an incredibly loyal fan base of med students and people who just want to learn things. This is also the one I have the least experience with so I recommend diving into forums and other blogs who go in depth on all the ways you can use this program. The web version is completely free and there is an official paid mobile app. There are also unofficial paid apps, this is the source of great drama and discourse and I’m not touching that here. Spaced repetition essentially means that the program will present you with cards at intervals designed to maximize your retention. When you flip over a card, you have four options that boil down to: fail, hard, good, easy. This is how the program determines what to show you and when.
Key Features:
The main draw is obviously the spaced repetition system. It’s much easier and more effective than sorting manually.
Because it’s open source, there is a way to customize the settings and cards to do basically whatever you want. There are also tons of premade decks to import and either use as-is or use as a base.
The online web version is completely free.
You can add really any media type to the cards. You can add sound clips of pronunciations, images, even drawings and diagrams.
Having the four options is particularly useful for the nuances of learning a language. For example, for general vocabulary decks I’ll assign one “point” to general meaning, tense/part of speech, and pronunciation. Getting the general meaning but not the other two means I select “hard” when I flip the card.
Best uses:
Vocab or learning a new alphabet. Specifically for drilling any of those “slippery” words. I don’t know if this happens to anyone else, but there are some vocab words that just refuse to stick with me. I’ve found the Anki SRS does help pin them down.
Potential downsides:
While there are decks to import, there could always be errors that you won’t catch just seeing single vocab words with no context.
The available customization is labor intensive.
The UI for the official app and web version isn’t super slick and intuitive.
Even the best flashcards are ultimately just flashcards and have limits to their usefulness.
Mango
Mango is similar to Babbel or other programs that focus on speaking (and doing so quickly). I much prefer Mango to Babbel or any other similar app and find that it does what it says it will. Languages are split into units. Each unit has chapters and each chapter has lessons. A lesson will start with an optional pre quiz and a brief recording of a conversation that you will be able to follow by the end of the lesson. Each lesson concludes with a listening and reading quiz. It also utilizes spaced repetition and gives you daily flashcards to review.
You learn based on phrases rather than individual words. A long sentence will be presented in its entirety. The lesson will then go through each word individually before combining them into phrases and, finally, the full sentence from the start. Then you will learn vocabulary needed for variations. The activities are fairly standard for a language app: speaking, listening, multiple choice. You can also turn off the interactive feature and have the lesson run as a “speak and repeat” style podcast. It tracks the hours you’ve spent learning a language and there is an activity log, but no in depth stats.
Key features:
It is focused on speaking immediately.
Has a ton of languages and several dialects for those languages.
Focuses on phrases and patterns that are most useful if traveling or having brief, friendly interactions.
Presents information in a digestible way and isn’t overwhelming.
Includes culture and grammar notes.
$12.99 a month but most public libraries and schools give you free access. You can also set up a household account for multiple people and split the cost with friends/family.
The first lesson of any language is free, and some rare and indigenous languages are completely free to access.
Audio is native speakers. When you record yourself, your vocal wave pattern appears that you can compare with the native speaker.
Best uses:
If you are traveling soon and want to navigate basic, friendly interactions, this will get you there quick. Within 1-3 months easily, depending on the language and how often you practice.
I also recommend this as a starting place when you are totally new to a language or to learning a language in general. The structure is excellent for getting a feel for things.
This is also great if you studied a language previously and need to refresh your memory or get back into it.
Potential downsides:
The “record yourself” feature is fairly buggy and often freezes up. It can also be annoying to try and match the timing of the native speaker, but you don’t have to record audio to progress past those lesson points so it isn’t too much of an inconvenience.
It isn’t meant for total fluency. As stated, the lessons (at least that I have done) are focused on speaking while traveling and making small talk. Some of the early lessons teach you to say “sorry, I don’t speak [x]”. Which is very useful if going abroad soon, but less so if you would rather just be able to speak that language.
The regimented nature can make it feel slow/too easy if you are also using other methods.
The review flashcards only have a binary “yes/no” option which feels annoying for longer phrases or after using Anki-style cards.
With any course like this, you aren’t going to have much choice in the vocab you learn or prioritizing topics.
LingQ
I am honestly surprised I don’t see more about this. I think they have been making a bunch of updates recently so maybe the version I’m using is miles above previous ones, but it is shockingly powerful. It’s also the hardest to explain (which may be why I don’t see much written about it and why this is going to be a long section.) LingQ (pronounced “link”) operates on a hybrid comprehensible/massive input model. While Anki prioritizes memorization and Mango priorities speaking, LingQ focuses on comprehension and listening. LingQ is comprised of courses which are made up of lessons. There are pre-built courses made by LingQ but the real goal is to make your own (more on that later).
Each lesson within a course has an audio recording and a written transcript. Words you haven’t seen before are highlighted blue (when you start, that’s every word). You click the word to see the definition and assign it one of 5 statuses: ignore, new, recognized, familiar, learned, or known. “Ignore” is used for things like names or borrowed words, they won’t be counted in your stats. “Known” is for words you knew before seeing them. You likely won’t have any of these if you’re starting a new language with no prior experience. Levels 1-3 highlight the word yellow and it becomes a LingQ. You can create a LingQq using as many words as you want. You can manually change the status of a word when you see it. You can also do various review activities similar to Mango, and if you get a word right twice in a row it will automatically bump up a level. You can always adjust it back down if needed. LingQ is very focused on the value of listening to a language. You can add lessons to playlists and listen to them like a podcast.
My personal favorite part of LingQ is the ability to import lessons. Especially YouTube videos. The site has a browser extension that will import any content in your target language into a lesson as an embedded item. You can then read/listen to/watch that content right in the app and get “credit” for it. LingQ’s statistics are some of the coolest/most motivating I’ve seen. You get coins for completing tasks but those are really just to see a number get bigger. It also tracks the words you’ve read, how many words you know, the hours listened, and speaking/writing if you utilize their tutor marketplace or writing forum.
The free trial is very limited but it’s enough to poke around and get a feel for things before signing up, not necessarily to learn anything substantial. The monthly membership is $12.95 and there’s a $199 lifetime option as well. I definitely recommend spending some time playing around at the free level and then upping to monthly if you like it.
Key features:
The ability to import lessons. It will also create a simplified version of shorter content. This is an AI generated summary of whatever you’ve imported. I use this for videos where natural speaking cadence can make it hard to parse things sometimes. It’s easier/more productive if I know generally what’s going on.
The creation of LingQs. I just think it’s a really cool and useful way to approach comprehensible input. You can visually see the yellow fading as you understand more and more of a lesson.
You can export LingQs to Anki (theoretically). I’ve never done this myself and I’ve seen some forum posts saying it doesn’t work super well all the time but it is a built in feature.
In-depth stats tracking and the ability to consume all the content easily in app. The stats would be annoying if it wasn’t literally easier to watch a video via LingQ than on YouTube.
Community features. There are community challenges (like Duolingo) but also a forum to submit writing that will be corrected by native speakers and a marketplace of tutors to easily sign up for speaking lessons. The forum is free and volunteer based, but scrolling through I didn’t see anyone who didn’t have at least one reply. The tutors are paid at an hourly rate and you can also pay by the word to have them correct written work.
Super flexible. There really isn’t any one right way to use this app so you can structure it however you like and set your own goals/metrics.
Playlists and focus on listening. It really does help to constantly be immersed in what a language sounds like, and being able to read and listen to the same thing has been so nice.
Actually decently helpful emails and not just spam.
Best for:
Hardcore language learners. The app/site provides some guidance on how to get started and the basic idea, but you’ll need to play around with it and spend some time reading forum posts or the emails they send to find what works for you.
Getting to higher levels of fluency after maxing out other apps/self study methods.
People looking to spend a lot of time on language learning because they enjoy it. This isn’t snarky, but there’s a difference between wanting or needing to learn Spanish to communicate at work or on vacation and just really enjoying learning languages. This is an app for language nerds.
Potential downsides:
Very overwhelming. They technically say you can jump right in with 0 knowledge of a language and be good to go, but I think it would be hard to make a lot of progress unless you’ve learned other languages before. If you’re looking to learn a new language for the first time, I recommend starting with Mango to get your bearings.
Doesn’t teach new alphabets. This isn’t a huge issue for Mango since it’s speaking focused, but I wouldn’t jump into Arabic or Russian on LingQ without spending some time learning the alphabet with other methods.
User generated definitions. This is a double edged sword. The definitions being linked to sites like Globse can lead to wrong definitions, but because you’re seeing things in context it’s easier to catch. And looking into what a phrase means is a great way to learn if you are really into languages.
The import feature isn’t 100% perfect when it comes to videos. It will only create a transcript when the video has captions enabled or a transcript provided, otherwise it just shows up as an audio file. It will also sometimes randomly just not be able to import a video which can be annoying, but in the grand scheme of things these are very minor annoyances.
Time commitment. The method doesn’t require a ton of actively sitting down and reviewing vocab or reading new words, but it does assume that you’ll swap out listening to music or podcasts while going about your day with listening to content in your target language. This is all well and good unless you really enjoy listening to specific content while doing tasks or need help not getting distracted. It’s going to be a lot of incomprehensible noise for a while before you can parse it. This might not be a downside as much as something to keep in mind when considering how effective it’s going to be for you.
Not as active of a community. Maybe it’s just for my particular languages, but there definitely aren’t a ton of people actively doing things like challenges. This really doesn’t matter much to me but it could be a bummer if you’re looking for that.
tl;dr just tell me how to learn things
If you need to learn a new alphabet, start with that. Otherwise, Mango to get your bearings, Anki to add to your vocab as you get bored with Mango, and LingQ to realistically get “fluent”. Then start writing and speaking either using tutors or people you know or local language groups.
