Hunting the Giant Elk
Tumblr media
I drew a picture of a pack of Werewolves who were hunting a large Irish Elk (scientifically known as Megaloceros) in a snowy pine forest. The main weaponry of a Werewolf is the claws, the teeth, and a hell of a bite force of 520 per pressure in square inches, both stronger than humans and wolves combined. However, the Werewolves could also use primitive hunting weapons & tools such as a spear, an axe, maces, and bow & arrows. They even use different bones and antlers if they had to.
Werewolves have no relation to fursonas and therians (I'll tell the difference between them in the future).

We’re celebrating Saint Patrick’s Day in a big way, with one of the largest known deer: the Irish Elk (Megaloceros giganteus)! It was originally discovered in bog deposits in Ireland. This megafauna could weigh up to 1,500 pounds (680 kg) and its antlers could reach an incredible 13-ft- (4-m-) spread. Once ranging from western Europe to China, this animal died out some 10,000 years ago. However, at least one population, living in Russia’s Ural Mountains, managed to survive until about 7,770 years ago, long after the end of the Pleistocene.
See the Irish Elk up close in the Museum’s Hall of Advanced Mammals! We’re open daily from 10 am-5:30 pm. Plan your visit.

Two cave art inspired Megaloceros bucks creating their own thunder in the grass. This is a subsection of something bigger I was trying, but this is lovely on its own.
The noise and swirling faint patterns are anti-AI measures and are not present on the actual art print.

Some dance + real-world-equivalent-ethnicity headcannons :)
Some more little bits i be thinking abt for those who want more dance content: (under the cut)
Usopp with his salsa fundamentals and luffy with his vague memories of samba end up, at some point, coming up with their own much more chaotic combo of the two. They r spinning around so fast its insane. Luffy is about to launch them into the sun. They're having a great time.
Sanji being absolutely miffed when the only other ppl on the crew who know how to couple's dance with him are Usopp and Luffy. He gets over it ofc, being able to actually dance with another person quickly overwhelms the "I wanted to tango with a beautiful lady" grief
Sanji being able to help Usopp re-learn salsa and them bonding over their moms abt it 🥲Luffy is a lost cause tho he's not learning shit /j
BaroqueWorks Robin and Bon Clay bonding over ballet Q_Q
Brook inventing the most INSANE new dips/twirls/transitions because he no longer has muscles or skin or whatever in the way
Also I firmly believe Usopp listens & dances to anything made by Spice, Mr. Killa, and Yung Bredda, but he refuses to let the crew know this. He's not embarrassed or anything he's just fairly sure Sanji would have a heart attack and die if he heard the lyrics
Sanji listens & dances to Rodrigo y Gabriela he's in love with their story
Zoro is one of those freaks who has no desire to listen to music at all but he won't turn it off if it's on, yk?
As made obvious above I think Usopp and Sanji are the 1st and 2nd most versatile dancers, but neither of them dance more Often than Franky
If i had to rank them based on how often/readily they will dance its....in the order I placed the pictures, with chopper between brook and nami. Luffy is only so low cause he'd usually rather be eating, and brook cause he'd rather be playing, and zoro cause he'd rather be drinking/napping
Robin will readily dance with you if you ask her but she's not going to initiate
If you love dance like i do and want to see some specific choreographers/dances i had in mind while drawing these, that will be the rest of this bullet list!
Sanji is doing Derek Hough's little solo bit from his pasodoble choreo on dancing with the stars. look it up it is so peak
Dancing with the star (chopper <3)
In my head Usopp is perfectly capable of dancing any choreography by Latrice Kabamba (west african steps), Tricia Miranda (dancehall), or Yeifren Mata (mostly male solo salsa)
For Franky I think some old way choreos by Nastya Batrachenko or Dashaun Wesley (he mostly does fem now but he has good old way stuff) r good

Authentic Irish Foods for Samhain
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
🩸 Blood pudding (living cattle could be bled through the winter to provide the material as well as collecting blood when the cattle were slaughtered to keep the numbers down for winter)
🫓 Brambrack
🍲 Stew
Lamb
Beef
Wild boar
Domestic pig
Deer
Goose
Mallard
Hare
🐗 Salted wild boar and domestic pig (it is possible that other meats were salted for preservation but given that salt was an expensive commodity and no records indicate other meats we simply do not know. I will note here that we also don't seem to have records of smoked meats for preservation during this time)
🦌 From Samhain to Bealtaine it was considered inappropriate to hunt wild game, including boar. So while wild meats were likely eaten and preserved through this time, much like crop harvests for Lughnasadh, any game that wasn't taken before this festival was supposed to be left alone to breed. (Very unlike our modern hunting schedules)
🍺 Mead and Barely ale
🥣 Porridge
Oat
Barley
🥛 Dairy (this would likely become more limited as the season progressed, but butter has been found in bogs, presumed to be preserved but potentially given as offerings)
Cow's milk
Butter
Curds
mulchán 'hard cheese' (the exact nature of this cheese is unknown but it was described as being extremely hard and could be stored for long periods of time)
🦪 Sea food
Sloke
Clams
Muscles
Crab
Halibut
Sea Salmon
🌿Native Culinary Plants growing in Ireland at this time of year
Skirret
Apples
Purple sprouting boccoli
Wild cabbage
Blackberry
Raspberry
Rowan berries
Elder berries
Sloes
Rosehip
Acorn
Chestnuts
Hazelnuts
Hen of the woods
Pullball
Fairy Ring Champignon
Chanterelle
Porcini
Black Trumpet
Saffron Milk Caps
Cauliflower Mushroom
Wood Blewit
Penny bun
There would be an abundance of foods at this point in the year, but that food would become lesser as the season progressed do to lack of production in the environment and the fact that this point in the year was a time for traveling and feasting (likely to increase bonds amongs the Tuatha and because people would not be as occupied with farming and raiding).

OMG sweetie! Your recent pics of furry Kira Nerys were amazingly adorable! She just looks so perky lovable & endearing! Your new looser more cartoonishly stylized approach is really expressive & appealing! And dang, that bottom-right pic of Mirror Kira working her black-clad booty is a treat to behold!😍🍑💖 It’s honestly astonishing how you give her so much dynamism & sense of movement through her pose! Heck, you can practically SEE her swaying her hips & seductively sashaying away in the pic😘
You are very kind, mister anon! Most of the credits of course must go to the great and talented Nana Visitor! I enjoy very much her acting, and episodes with Kira and mirror!Kira are just a lot of fun! Aaaand you just gave me the motivation to draw a furry version this marvelous authentic DS9 scene 🍑🍑 (I just forgot the episode, but this exists). Thank you! ID: A clean cartoonish cell shaded drawing of Major Kira and Chief O'brien from DS9 as anthropomorphic animals, a saiga and an irish deer. Their are fixing some panel in the Ops, all fours, and only their butts, hind legs and tails are visible. End ID. 🌟 2023 carrd | commissions | ☕️ Ko-fi 🌟

†Irish elk (Megaloceros giganteus)
Art credit: Mark Witton
Not closely related to elk nor exclusively found in Ireland, Megaloceros was one of the largest deer to ever live, their antlers alone weighing some 88 pounds (40kg). They lived from Ireland in the west to Lake Baikal in the east, and were better adapted to open steppe environments than any living deer, with adaptations for running and a diet of leaves and grass. Ancient humans met and hunted these animals, and thanks to their artworks drawn onto the walls of caves, we have a pretty good idea of what colour Megaloceros would have been in life!

The Gigantic Irish Deer
The Gigantic Irish Deer (Megaloceros giganteus) also called the giant deer or Irish giant deer, is an extinct species of deer in the genus Megaloceros and is one of the largest deer that ever lived. The animal was never exclusively Irish – nor, for that matter, was it an elk – but Ireland was the early treasure-house of its fossil skeletons and antlers, impeccably preserved in lake-mud beneath…

Since Spooktober has rolled around again, I wanna give a shoutout to a project that @snailontheslope and I made two years agp. We watched and reviewed 13 Irish movies in various subgenres of horror, and the end result is a fully illustrated zine available for $1+ on Gumroad (link in source).
These are all the illustrations featured inside. Enjoy and happy reading!

I haven't forgotten these. I spent the better part of three freakin' hours reseating all my digital brushes & getting my tablet talking to the new machine. The Megaloceros oracle card.

For #FossilFriday and St Patrick’s Day, here’s Megaloceros, commonly referred to as the Irish Elk! Despite the name, this Ice Age deer was neither exclusive to Ireland nor an elk; rather its closest relative is the fallow deer. Its antlers measured up to twelve feet across, and thanks to cave paintings, we have a great idea of its coloration in life!
