Your first season in the new team had been going great. You were getting along with your teammate. Way too much that might bring you in trouble if your brother found out. But there were no huge problems in seeing him as your brother was in the Ferrari paddock and you were in Alpine Renault’s.

Esteban was a sweet boy and a great gentleman. You two instantly connected as teammates and later on romantically. You knew your brother wouldn’t approve you two together. He didn’t even like the idea of you two together and often showed his disapproval whenever he seemed too close to you.

“Isn’t he being too touchy?” Carlos asked while watching one of the challenges you shot with Esteban.

“Well, he never makes me uncomfortable so there is no problem.” You replied.

Both of you were travelling to your home GP together. You preferred to travel with the team and Esteban but your brother had insisted. And you had to pretend you weren’t too much into Esteban or you will get caught. Everyone knows how protective he is with his loved ones. And you were the sister, little one, after all. You will get heavy doses of it.

“Tell me if he does,” he said with all seriousness in his voice, “he will deal with me then.”

“Calm down Carlos,” you assured, putting your hand on his shoulder, “He is a nice guy.” A blush crept up your cheeks as you thought about Esteban which was hard to go unnoticed by Carlos. He didn’t say anything but raised his eyebrows in suspicion. He glared at you. His phone rang and you were glad Lando was calling or you would’ve gotten a lecture.

You were engrossed in your phone when someone knocked on your driver’s room door.

“It’s me, madame,” Esteban said. You immediately got up to open the door. “Hi, sweetheart.” You greeted him with a bright smile on your face and raised yourself to wrap your arms around him. You buried your face into the crook of his neck and he wrapped his arms around you.

You brought him in and kissed his cheek. He chuckled lightly and brought his hands forward to reveal a bouquet of tulips.

“A little gift before race.” He gave it to you and you gracefully accepted. “Thank you.” You took it and placed it on the table.

“Now I have to leave,” he said, “it’s race day.”

You grabbed him and placed your lips on his. He pulled you closer by your waist and deepened the kiss which made you feel explosions of emotions and butterflies in your stomach.

You were so happy and so busy that you forgot to notice that the door of your driver’s room was ajar. Carlos was standing at the door, about to knock. But he saw you and Esteban kissing. His face had turned red in rage.

You pulled away from Esteban and looked at him with all the affection you had for him. Esteban wrapped his arms and hugged you. You were caught off guard as you noticed your brother glaring at you from the corner of your eye. He gave you a furious look, his face super red in anger, and left. You sighed in relief as Esteban pulled away. He didn’t have to deal with your brother now. “Goodbye, see you later,” Esteban said as he left.

Your phone dings. You picked it up immediately to check it.

Carlos See you after the race.

You put it down as you felt your blood rushing in tension. He found out!

Your phone dings again.

Carlos Aha! And don’t forget to bring your Romeo along.

Your face turned pale. What will happen next?

“Like really Y/N!” Carlos yelled at you. “You really had to go for him?” He had arrived at your driver’s room to take your class. You sitting on the bed, listening to him lecturing you, your face looking at the floor.

“But I-I love him, Carlos.” You spoke up, your voice smaller. You have no idea how this will end. He had been very protective of you. But you didn’t expect him to be this furious as he had been always labelled as a calm man.

“Look at me.” He ordered you, but you couldn’t maintain eye contact with him. Your eyes were moistened and you were trying your best to not burst into tears. He was expressing his disappointment towards your behaviour. There are three billion males in the world and you had to fall for your teammate? Carlos wasn’t just angry. He was livid.

“Y/N Sainz Vazquez de Castro!” He shouted. “Look at me!” you raised your face to look at him. “And where is that Romeo of yours?!” The driver’s room door opened and Esteban entered inside.

“Sorry, I was-” he was about to apologise to you for being late in his own affectionate manner until he saw Carlos’ enraged. You had texted him to meet you in your driver’s room after the race for a ‘serious matter’ you had. He didn’t expect the serious matter to be this serious.

“Hola Carlos!” Esteban tried to be cheerful.

“Hola,” he said pointing to the space next to you, “take a seat.”

Esteban’s eyes widened. “Por favor.” He repeated.

Esteban sat next to you. Carlos took a chair and sat in front of him.

He took out a heavy breath. “What are your intentions for my sister?” He asked.

“I like her,” he turned his face to give me an affectionate glance, “very much.” Carlos wasn’t impressed. His eyes full of rage weren’t leaving him.

“In fact,” Esteban took your hand in his, “I think I am in love with her.” Your eyes widened with his confession. You didn’t expect him to fall first. He and your brother had a lot in common. A lot of fangirls would’ve noticed that both of them are Virgo men. And Virgo men don’t fall in love easily. You have seen your brother.

“How long you two had been together?”

“Since Australia.” You both replied in unison. Carlos seemed to have calmed down. “Dinner. Tomorrow,” he said to Esteban and got up from his chair, “You know the rest, Y/N.” He said, looking at you and left the room. The door closed and Esteban let out a sigh of relief. You turned to kiss him on the cheek. He wrapped his arms around you and pulled you into a comforting hug.

He pulled away and looked at you. “Now tell me about the rest that you know.”

Mini-review:

I loved this way more than I thought I would. The representation probably isn't perfect, but it portrays fatphobia in a really harsh and unflinching light. Some people might find it too much, but I think Carlota Pereda made the right choice, showing how bullying and abuse can affect a person's psyche. Oh, and it was a fantastic move to show that fatphobia can happen at home as much as it happens outside. While there are strong doses of dark humor here and there, the movie is a pretty hard watch at times, so be warned.

All that being said, the movie's true power rests entirely on Laura Galán's bravura performance. She perfectly conveys her character's anxiety, confusion and terror. I couldn't help but relate to her, even as her situation escalates into something pretty crazy. Also, Carmen Machi's acting is as excellent as always, but I already expected that. Finally, I wanted to mention the cinematography and the sound design. The movie flawlessly captures the vibes of summer life in a small, rural-ish Spanish town, from the light to the background noises. So yeah, I will definitely keep an eye out for Pereda and Galán's future work.
