y'all stop saying fyodor has never looked so sincerely angry before. he has.
I know this because, and this is not an exaggeration, the vast majority of my manga revisits are to enjoy his expressions of anger, disdain, and malcontent. i shit you not, several of my bsd meta posts wholly unrelated to fyodor were written because I happened to notice something else while flipping through to imbibe fedya's hissy fits. I don't reread the manga when I do this, just those scenes, unless something else catches my attention.
anyway, stop disrespecting my beloved pastime.
#bsd#bungou stray dogs#bsd fyodor#most people are remarkably bad at reading expressions#not me though#this isnt a bit i fixated on how emotions are nonverbally communicated so that i could lie better and to develop a pleading face#for most of elementary school i studied people's faces and workshopped my own by getting feedback from others and testing them in the field#then in 8th grade my gifted program teacher made us take an assessment on how well we could read faces#to debunk body language expertise#and demonstrate the fact that most people think they can read faces but most of us cant#emphasizing why trials and presumptions based on assumptions that we can are harmful#everyone predictably failed real hard#except for me. i made an 80%#my teacher made me take it again and explain to her my process.#then she asked where i learned it and i explained to her that i never got stickers at naptime in kindergarten because i never slept#so i began obsessively refining my fake sleep#it took months but i figured out how to coordinate all of the tells and it worked i started getting stickers#so then i started to practice other states of mind#and she marked me an outlier and removed me from the data 😭#anyway. all im saying is. i love fedya's face.

That moment when you have to let people be wrong about you because correcting them would make you seem like an unbearable show-off
I was at a bookstore with a friend the other day and I was looking at a book in German that I was interested in buying, but then I saw that it was a translation and had originally been written in French
I commented idly to my friend "Sometimes I don't buy a book because it's a translation and I always prefer to read in the original language when possible" and she said in an agreeing-with-me way, "Yeah it would make more sense to read it in English"
and I realized she assumed I meant English when I said "original language"
but I couldn't bring myself to say "Yeah, or French or Dutch or Spanish or Italian or Portuguese or one of the other languages I read..." because like. who says that kind of thing.
#it's odd but i've suddenly been noticing a lot of people underestimating me lately#like i told a friend i was studying compsci/programming#and she started sending me like... links to absolute beginner 'how to start learning to code' resources#which of course is very sweet and i really appreciate her supportiveness!#so i certainly don't want to say 'lol i passed that point 10 years ago but thanks'#or my friends know perfectly well that i'm a language professional and have spent time studying many languages#but somehow they don't seem to make the connection that that translates into having actual abilities?#like i can piece together the meaning of a sentence in russian or chinese and they'll go 'wtf' like i'm a wizard or something#or i've mentioned a few times that i read for fun in various languages but that seems to just go in one ear and out the other for most folk#and they still can't conceive that i would read a WHOLE BOOK in a language that's not german or english#these are just two examples but i've seen it happen with several other things too#and i'm just... not sure how normal people handle this sort of thing?#how do you let your friends know what you're capable of without coming across as an arrogant prick#i'm not seeking approbation and so i don't tend to boast#but i think maybe i err too hard in the opposite direction?#maybe i've been accidentally implying all these years that i'm Very Amateur in all my interests/hobbies#i don't know how to strike a reasonable balance#but it does feel kind of. weirdly alienating. to suddenly realize most of my friends really don't Know me in this way#cosmo gyres#personal#tag rant#i guess what annoys me is that i'm very careful not to do this to others#if someone tells me about a certain interest or hobby of theirs i assume by default that they must know So Much about it#and if i dare to send them or suggest them anything i always preface it with 'you probably already know this but...'#or 'this may well be something that's painfully obvious to someone with your expertise but...'#and i would try to never make any statement or suggestion that implies i think they're at a low level in [whatever that thing is]#so it bothers me a bit when other people don't take the same consideration. i guess.#(not enough to do anything about it beyond blogging with mild annoyance. but hey)

A friend and me had a conversation, which led to us wanting to confirm what we were thinking. Our "hypothesis" (very informal one xd) is that there's a correlation between people who study languages, and those who are learning programming. As such, here's the poll:

Our dorm building flooded over break, so here’s our new giant posters (not pictured: 6 foot tall Baja Blast bottle, a bunch of KPop boys, just a chill guy, our baby bill cardboard cutout (who actually survived the flood!), and a few other pathetic anime men)
Our next projects include
•The lovely buddy daddies family
•The OHSHC cast
•Spock
•The cast of Gakuen Handsome
#house md#knights of sidonia#gravity falls#billford#south park#craig tucker#brothers conflict#jjk gojo#college#college dorms#can I talk about gakuen handsome real quick#because tell me why the first time we watched it we got so emotional and started crying#and when we found the YouTube account and learned that there were games and merch and music??#also apparently there’s video games for brothers conflict??#I’m going to get it but it’s completely in Japanese#luckily my friend’s unsuspecting roommate knows Japanese so we’re going to make him translate#he literally only learned the language because he loves vocaloid so much#whenever I go to visit their room he’s always on his computer working on the voice program lmfao#anywayssss

me: we should get into hydrology or ecology or something geography related. we are good at geography and love stupid bullshit like that. its a viable career path with lots of options and historically speaking people do tend to be happier when they can afford to eat
also: okay but have you considered. going all-in on creative writing with a focus on programming and music design so that you could spend all your time creating video games in a basement somewhere
me: no i think i would like to have a stable income i think
also me: forsake everything to get into that interactive fiction course right fucking now
#ramblings#at that embarrassing stage where when ppl ask me what program im in and just shrug and say Who Knows#the thing is. if i went the arts route i would probably still jave to take SOME sciencish courses#and if i went the geography route i would still probably have to take some humanities courses#so like neither route would necessarily lock me out of learning the other stuff#but Which One Do I Want A Shiny Certificate In#lets not think about the possibility of me going all in on modern languages theres already enough going on here#the thing is that i dont think i have the right? temperament for the geog route?#like i think geography majors and adjacent guys are usually more interested in??? i dunno important shit?#personally i like learning about geography and history and anthropology bc thats World Building for Real Life#i only ever employ the scientific method for bullshit#not to be a sub but i really wish something or someone else would forcibly narrow down my options for me

Surprendre! Bird hugs!!
(The owl kicked me out for getting too many things wrong so that one's from google lol I couldn't find how you say "Surprise!" like you're jumping out at somebody so maybe that's not a thing over there)
Anyway hello!! How are you? I hope you're doing okay and your food from last night was good (>^-^|^-^<)
Haha we do have it. 'surprendre' is the infinitive of the verb you just yelled 'the act of surprising!!' though I guess you guys don't have verb infinitives do you? You just say 'to surprise'.
Anyway to yell surprise in french just say 'surprise!' ;] it's a transparent word when it's an interjection. (Which is like 'Oh' 'ah!' or even 'fuck!' but those are in both languages. Would be pretty stale if we didn't have those lol) Now then!
Birs hugs!!!! Yippeeeee!!! I love the gifs you find ^^ I'm alright! Got what I needed to get done today so I can go to work on my art shtuff lol. The croque monsieurs were very very good. I wish I'd taken a picture now. I might just make more now.
Ps. (You do find infinitives in some cases like 'je me suis fait surprendre' but in English you'd translate that 'I was surprised [by something]' that's really weird don't really know the rule for when to use the infinitive. I guess you guys can't make sentences like that, it's understandable that you had issues with it. I'll look it up for you.)
#answered asks#Charlie somegrumpynerd#the thing with the Owl is that they don't give you actual grammar lessons and such#I tried with Russian and it just gives you sentences with no explanation and you're supposed to copy it#it's good for practice I guess#but not really for learning a language#I try to supplement with what I know from my understanding of french but I wish I could do more#I wanna pull out french primary school programs so I can teach you how we learned#agrghrghrhrgg#anyway#I do what I can and I hope it helps ^^#bc right now it's all out of order y'know??#I feel like we should start at the basics but I feel like maybe I don't know what the basics are and what's kind of far into it#idk

one of the issues with minority languages (x2) is we have no marketing budgets and everything we do have tends to be done by some guy in his five minutes of free time between actual payed careers so stuff looks very graphic design is my passion. Another issue is needing to stick at least two languages on all the flyers and stuff looking crowded idk stuff I want to play with x2 with the typography
#And it’s a building problem because it’s not visually appealing or useful to learners and children so they always associate the writing#System with a dry textbook page#One of my dreams is to create a workbook/app program for the Yiddish aleph beys#Once you learn the aleph-beys if you speak a Germanic language and come from a Yiddish background (the maj of#Yiddish learners) you can jump right into reading original texts. Until then - scary
