SS23 Orpheus Notebook: Personalization at its Best! [Simblreen 2023]

Greetings, fellow simmers!

Ever since the release of Discover University, I've been using "MyComputer UoG X19 Athena". While the Athena laptop has its charm with its assortment of stickers, they mainly revolved around universities and soccer—a hobby I don't personally share, neither do my sims. That's when inspiration struck, leading me to create something new and exciting: the SS23 Orpheus Notebook.

Chapter 1:

Coriolanus, now Private Snow, hated District 12. It was so depressing. Between the coal dust, mud, and poverty, he’s surprised that half of the district's population hasn't killed themselves yet. The atmosphere is horrible.

He hates it.

Would've never made it to adulthood if he was raised in the back hills of the Appalachian mountains. Seriously, he would've offed himself. Between the mud, the muggy heat, the never ending coal dust, the bugs (locals call them skeeters), and the overall atmosphere of despair, he hates District 12.

Oh, how he missed the view of the Rockies that surround his beloved Capitol. He had such a lovely view of the superior mountain range from his former penthouse. Even though it was falling apart, moldy, and rat infested, the penthouse was still on the Corso. Was still in the wealthiest part of town. Yes, he was struggling to stay afloat; was impoverished, but at least he lived in the prized and most sought after part of the Capitol.

Keyword: lived. As in past tense, as in he used to live there. Now he lives on Peacekeeper Base-12, District 12.

From a 12th floor Corso penthouse to a peacekeeper’s base in 12. Oh, how Coriolanus Snow has fallen.

High-as-a-kite-bottom must be shitting rainbows at Coriolanus being a peacekeeper in a backwater district.

And to think he was originally assigned to the peacekeeper base in 8. Oh, how he's glad he spent every last cent to his name to bribe his way into service in 12. He doubts that he could survive District 8 considering it's full of nothing but smog, tenant buildings, and textile factories.

At least in 12 he has some fresh air to breathe.

But, he hasn't been able to find his reason for being in 12.

Lucy Gray.

He's been in 12 for a few weeks now and can't locate her. Even Sejanus can't get anyone to tell him where she's at. That's bad considering how everyone seems to trust Sejanus; open up to the naive revolutionary due to his warm and friendly personality.

So, Coriolanus is stuck patrolling the streets of District 12 while rethinking his life choices. God, how he wants to be back in the Capitol so bad. He'll do anything to get back.

Anything at all.

One day, while on patrol in the Merchant Sector, he spotted you, a pretty Seam girl, making her way to the apothecary shop.

You had on a pretty floral dress.

No, not just a floral dress, but a dress with tiny red roses on it.

It suited you.

You had a book tucked under your arm as you walked down the cobbled streets of the nicer part of the district. And when you noticed him, you gave him a small smile.

That was the biggest goddamn mistake you've ever made in your entire life!

That one small smile sent Coriolanus’ mind into overdrive. You were so kind to him with that one tiny gesture. So kind when everyone else in the district looked at him with disgust because of the uniform he wore on a daily basis. Everyone else in this back asswards district looked at him like a bug to be squashed, but you didn't. You looked at him like he was a genuine person.

Your small smile was full of warmth and sunshine. It reminded him of his mother, who he lost such a long time ago.

Oh, how he secretly craved the warm gentleness of a woman. The warm gentleness that he's only known while in the embrace of his mother.

He wonders if you would sing to him late at night when sleep seemed to evade him. When he was deep in thought, too focused on a problem that needed solving to sleep. Would you wrap your arms around him, hold him when he needed solace? Would you be that gentle woman's touch he's craved his entire life?

Yes.

Yes, you will be.

Coriolanus vowed that he'd find a way back to the Capitol, but now that's changed. Now, he needs to find a way to bring both of you back to the Capitol.

As delusional as it might seem Coriolanus was instantly obsessed with you all because you gave him a kind, small smile while on your way to intern at the apothecary shop.

But he didn't view it as obsession, instead he viewed it as love. And he loves you with his entire being all because you smiled sweetly at him.

Your older brother Rein and his girlfriend Ashlie raised you to be leery and fearful of peacekeepers. They told you not to trust them; to stay away from them. And most of all, they told you to never ever look them in the eye or talk to them.

Not unless you wanted trouble to rain down on you like hellfire, that is.

But you made the mistake of flashing one a smile while on your way to the apothecary. The peacekeeper was young, you reckon around your age, and very tall. He had to be one of the tallest men you've ever seen in your entire life. But it wasn't his height that made you notice him. No, it was his eyes. Eyes such a pure blue, that they reminded you of the beautiful crystal clear water of the lake.

He seemed unlike any man you've ever seen before. Yes, he was a peacekeeper on watch duty, but he looked miserable. As if he didn't want to be here.

So, before you could think twice, you gave him a small, warm and friendly smile. Hoping that maybe you could cheer him up. Make his day a bit brighter in the desolate, depressing coal mining district you were cursed to be living in.

To your surprise, he smiled back. It was a closed lip smile, but it took over his entire face and just made his eyes sparkle. Made him look youthful underneath his peacekeeper's persona.

You barely made it a yard away from him when suddenly, a large shadow loomed over you. Looking up, you saw that the very same peacekeeper you just shared a smile with was right next to you. Walking by your side, like your personal golden retriever.

Except you didn't know that Private Snow isn't a golden retriever. He's more like a demon possessed Chihuahua from the deepest pits of hell. Shit, scratch that, he's legit the hellhound Cerberus that's guards the gate to the underworld for Hades.

Mhm…

But you didn't know that. How could you? You've just seen the man. Up until now he's been nothing, but a stranger to you.

Just another random peacekeeper.

“Um, hi.” You greeted your new companion, your voice a near stutter, as you passed by townspeople and shopkeepers while walking down the cobblestone street of the Merchant Sector.

Everyone looked a bit wide-eyed since you were side by side with a peacekeeper. Surely your name would be in the gossip mill tonight; it wouldn't be anything good either. Your older brother was going to flip his shit when he found out.

“Hello, Miss-” The peacekeeper at your side greeted, leaving an opening hanging for you to supply him your name.

“Y/N Halvir.” You simply supplied.

“Well, Miss Y/N, I'm Private Coriolanus Snow; I thought perhaps I could escort you to wherever you're going since, after all, it's my duty to patrol these streets and keep the good law-abiding citizens of 12 safe from harm.” Coriolanus told you, laying the charm on real thick since he wanted you to believe that he just wanted to do something nice and dutiful for you. He didn't want you to know that he wanted to take you to your destination in order to show you off to the entire Merchant Sector. To make sure that everyone (and he means everyone) in that part of 12 knows that you're with him.

Commissioned Officers are the only ones allowed in the Peacekeepers to have serious relationships (usually they would have an arranged match in the Capitol) but he didn't care. Coriolanus Snow did what he wanted; the hell with anybody else. He wanted something, he took it. Right now, he wanted you.

So…

He was taking you.

Or at least he would be taking you back to the Capitol with him once he figures out a way back there. But as for right now, Private Snow was letting everyone see you together; letting everyone know that you were his girl.

His girl and off limits to anyone else.

And if someone even did so much as look at you sideways, well, he'd kill them.

“Oh, you don't have to. The apothecary’s right up the bend and I'd hate to be a bother; make you take time out just to walk me there.”

“It's not a bother at all, darling. In fact, I insist on walking with you, to keep you safe.” Private Snow smiled, seeming to be a friendly and helpful gentleman underneath his grey uniform. “Never know who out there might try to harm such a pretty girl, like you.” He added in to drive home his reason for walking with you.

Hearing him call you pretty made your cheeks grow hot. Oh my… Nobody's called you pretty before, not even your own brother and his girlfriend (and they raised you). No, Rein and Ashlie always said that you looked nice.

Coriolanus calling you pretty did something to you.

The peacekeeper smirked to himself, knowing that his words had ensnared you to him. He honestly did think you were pretty, so having you react to the compliment by getting all flustered made his heart soar. It gave his obsessive nature a large ego boost, because to him your reaction meant that you loved him back, just like he loved you.

That the two of you shared the unbreakable bond of love at first sight.

But the truth of the matter was that Coriolanus was obsessed with you in an unhealthy way after seeing you and sharing a few words while you were just a kind person that wasn't used to being called pretty

You're from the Seam; girls from the seem don't get called pretty.

Well, not unless they're one Lucy Gray Baird.

But that reality would never be Private Snow's reality. No, his reality’s one where you're both crazy in love with each other after sharing smiles, a few words, and a walk.

Coming to a stop right in front of the apothecary, you looked at the peacekeeper and politely told him, “Thank you for walking me here, Coriolanus.”

Coriolanus leaned forward, closing the space between you, only to request, “Please, call me Coryo. All my friends and family do.”

His words took you aback. Blinking, you asked in disbelief, “You want to be friends?”

“Yes.” Coryo nodded, a too wide smile showcasing his pearly whites on his face.

Lie!

That was a big fat fucking lie!

He didn't want to be your friend, he wanted to be your boyfriend. No, no. That's not true either. Scratch that, Peacekeeper Snow wanted to be your husband.

Yes, that's right. He just met you and barely knows you, but he wants to be your husband. All because he's obsessed with you; thinks that you share some kind of special undying love all because of a kind smile and a blush.

Boy oh boy, seems like he forgot about Lucy Gray real quick.

She didn't matter to him anymore. Coriolanus realizes now that the songbird was just a means to an end; that it would've never worked out between them.

That you're his true prize. The girl that's meant for him. The girl that's kind and pretty, just like his mother used to be before she was taken away from him by dying in the birthing bed with his baby sister.

You're his perfect girl.

“Okay. We can be friends.” You naively responded.

If only you knew what he truly meant by ‘being friends’. It'd save your family a whole lot of trouble and heartbreak. That's for sure.

“I'll wait around; escort you back when your done.” Coriolanus offered as the young dirty blonde man inside of the apothecary shop looked at the window, stunned to see you talking so easily with a peacekeeper.

A peacekeeper that had no need for herbs, remedies, and healers since he had access to all the modern medical marvels Panem’s Capitol had to offer at the PKB-12 Military Hospital. The young shopkeeper was concerned for your safety, seeing you exchanging words effortlessly with the uniformed grunt.

“I’m interning here til 5:30, sometimes 6.” You told Coriolanus because you didn't want your new friend waiting around for you when he had work to do.

Before Coriolanus could tell you that he'd be back around then to escort you home, the door to the apothecary flung open and out walked Juris Ashberry.

Juris was a dirty blonde of average height that you had gone to school with. His father was a clerk at the Justice Building; worked closely with the mayor. His mother was good friends with the old hag that owned the apothecary.

So, Juris arranged for you to get an internship at the shop after his family had arranged for him to be in a courtship with Belladonna, the daughter of the old hag that ran the apothecary.

Belladonna hated you because her intended, Juris, had a sweet spot for you. A sweet spot he was too chicken to openly declare.

And it was the worried look in his eyes that tipped Coriolanus off that the man who just walked out of the apothecary felt something for you. He wanted to stab that dirty merchant boy's eyes out for looking at you.

Coriolanus is the only one allowed to look at you with such sweet worry and care.

“Y/N, you're needed inside.” Juris told you as a way to separate you and Coryo. His eyes sized up the Capitol born and bred peacekeeper, concluding that if he had to then he could take the tall and athletically built peacekeeper on in a fight.

“Bye, Coryo.” You waved at your new friend before turning towards the apothecary.

You were almost to the door whenever it opened and out strolled Belladonna, your boss's daughter. She gave you a glare before skipping over to Juris and snatching his hand in hers. “Now that she's finally here, we can go have midmorning tea with Mayfair and Billy.”

Juris just nodded before silently walking off with Belladonna in the direction that the Mayor's large lavish house was in.

Coriolanus didn't like Juris. Even though Juris has himself a pretty flaxen blonde on his arm, the way he looked at you was dangerous. And the fact that the man seemed comfortable at your place of employment (internship, but practically the same thing) didn't go over well with him either.

Coriolanus decided that he needed to get you away from that dirty blonde man; he needed to make you dependent on him. And he needed to do those things because it was the only way to ensure that you'll join him back in the Capitol.

So, while you went about your midmorning in the apothecary, Coriolanus patrolled the streets while scheming up a way to get you fired. Hmm, maybe he could threaten the shopkeeper’s family? People seemed to do anything to keep their family safe.

Whatever he’s got to do to get you out of that shop, he’s going to do it. He was going to stop at nothing to have you on his arm as he stepped out of the train and onto the platform during his return to the best city in all of Panem.

The Capitol.

A/N: Im thinking of Melon, ordered both carnivore and herbivore set at some local Bcdonalds (Idk this was based on chap 139)

What if he can't eat those two sets anymore, he just took 1 bite to each one and doesn't want it anymore since he lost appetite by the taste of it. Then [Name] comes in about to order and well saw Melon since these two have a neutral relationship. Then Melon is would be typa babygirl that would ask you to "finish these, I don't want it anymore".

And [Name] here is like a consuming food dispenser so like once he turns around getting all mad asf and wondering how some animals would say it's tasty and in his mind he's like "fock u mean tasty? I could roast yow body for a meal." typa shi and once he turn to get his gaze back on [Name] boom, [Name] already have ate it both not even giving it a seconds.

it's a newday for him to go hunt down herbivores for sport with his crazy ass mind. It's already almost five pm and Melon is already feeling hungry and since the black market is way too far from the location he's currently in, he just decided to enter the local BcDonalds. He's there with his eyes squint, looking at the two options if he wants a herbivore set or carnivore set... but a few moments he just chose them both and for him only. Which made the cashier so surprised, but quickly followed.

Now he just sat there on one of the single bar stools, waiting for his order patiently but the longer some herbivores being nosy the more his patience running thin. He's sensitive to noises and more so Melon keeps responding on his mind and secretly talking shit to them and even wanting to threaten to murder them.

After a few minutes of waiting, Reader somehwhat ran unto him not expecting he'll be here at a local BcDonalds. So then Reader comes in his way and greeted Melon with neutral reaction, it almost pissed Melon but atleast he have someone to talk to now.

"I didn't expected you to be here and what not. Are you my stalker now or something?" Melon asked rolling his eyes and being pissy towards you but not entirely.

"You're overthinking stuff, didn't expected you to be ordering here." You stated.

"well the shit am I even going to do about it? Eat raw veggies at a local stands? Don't bullshit me." Melon gave you a side eye as his hand brushed the line of his jaw.

"Melon I swear-" That was pretty irritating and not epic at all.

After a while of waiting, the employee settled two trays of the sets and settled his orders there. Melon sighs and took a sniff at the first burger, then there you are smiling at him.

"what are you, doing a mukbang vlog?" You teased at him before he rolled his eyes at you.

"can't you let me just eat in peace?" He stated before taking a big bite to the herbivore burger, before his face twinged in disgust.

"ahh, taste test taste tes! Give it a big nomm" You being comfortable at Melon and even encouraging him to take a big bite made his glare stings at you.

"pwah, how can you herbivores like something like this..?" Melon settled down the burger and get the carnivore burger.

"soo CocoMelon, is it yummy?" You teasingly asked him before shotting you with a glare.

"Very funny, [Name] it made the crowd laugh." He sighs stating it in bitter way before taking a bite to a herbivore burger.

He took a few munch to let the taste lingers before he rolled his eyes again at the taste so bland and almost making him wanting to throw it out.

"And then this one, tasted so sandy.. what a joke." He sighs out of annoyance before his long tongue licked the sharpness of his teeth.

[Name] on the other hand is pretty much interested on his comments to the herbivore and carnivore burgers and so his food reviews.

[Name] snickered and stared at Melon, enjoying how he's experiencing hell with these foods.

"You good?" You asked him, before he sighs and played with the amount of kecthup spreading on the herbivore burger.

"Do I looked like im smiling?" he glares at you, before his ears twitched after hearing a conversation of those two avian herbivores from behind. In his mind he have already killed those two and made a good chiken wrap and pastil burger.

"You looked like, you're gleaming of the taste of it." You can't help but tease him at his lowest ans you didn't care at all if he's about to kill you or not. Before he shooked his head and looked at the other way.

"well you go have it, I don't want it anymore." He almost ordered for you to do it, he knows wasting food is just an ugly thing to do since he probs grew up in streets or orphanage and rarely get food in a week. But enough with that he were staring around and secretly imagining he were already have killed some animals here or searching for a next victim.

It's been 11 years since the last update to Sotha Sil Expanded, and I'm finally back to bring it up to Todd's high standards (as well as apply a decade's worth of professional experience, assets, and new modding tools to it).

This features a HUGE amount of fixes, new features, new models, new meshes, new voice acting, new signage, new tubes, and generally aims to address the myriad of problems people had.

What is the main lesson of your story? Why did you choose it?

I'll be honest, I haven't really thought that far ahead. I suppose, if there is a lesson to take from WSIBC?IGTDA!, it might be that you should always chase your goals and desires, and screw what other people think. Maybe put a little more thought and planning into yours than Aura does hers, though. I mean, she almost dies due to her recklessness. Don't be like Aura.

What did you use as inspiration for your worldbuilding?

Well, it's a zombie book - I love zombies, in case you can't tell - so the world is an amalgamation of zombie stuff I love. The zombies are based off of the Train to Busan zombies. This is a self-insert mess, so I'm using the town and people I know in the town as location and characters. Little tropes here and there that I love in movies and books alike. It's just a big chimera of stuff that I grab from stuff I remember and shove into it. It definitely needs polish when it's done, but I'm having a blast so far, so I'm'a keep doing it :3

What is your MC trying to achieve, and what are you, the writer, trying to achieve with them? Do you want to inspire others, teach forgiveness, or help the reader grow as a person?

Uhhhhhh this is a tough question. Right now, Aura is trying to make it to Roger's Grocery Mart to save her girlfriend, but most of the time, she's just trying to have a good time in the zombie apocalypse and hopefully not die. She does eventually grow into a character that (mostly) thinks things through and takes other people's situations into account, so I suppose the lesson is "the world doesn't revolve around you - be kind and helpful to others"?

As for what I'm trying to achieve... mostly, to be honest, I just want people to pick up my book and have a good time reading it. I want to write a zombie book because it's my passion and because there aren't enough zombie books out there. I guess I'm trying to inspire others? To show them that you can survive an impossible situation if you work hard and think things through?

How many chapters is your story going to have?

The only time I've written a full-length book (sorry, the only two times, forgot about Zero: ALPHA), it had about twenty-odd chapters. Z:A had...uh...thirty? That was a long time ago and I sadly no longer have that draft. This one is going to go until it's done. Hopefully more than thirty though!

Is it fanfiction or original content? Where do you plan to post it?

Original content! I have no idea where I'm going to post it. I'm torn between Draft2Digital (originally Smashwords) or Substack. Thing is, I'm really bad at marketing and keywords and all that technical stuff that goes into publicizing, so I'm really hesitant to share it at all. I'm the type of person that gets absolutely morally devastated if my own self-inflicted goals aren't met, and I'm not sure if I can handle that kind of crushing heartbreak with this one lol

When did you start writing?

My dad set up a Windows 95 computer for me in his office, his old one, and taught me the basics of using it. I was five, about to turn six. I immediately sat down and wrote a story about unicorns. I've been writing ever since.

I didn't start writing fanfiction until I was thirteen and had just binge-watched Lord of the Rings for the first time. We don't talk about those works. They were awful.

Write it. Oh it's cringe? Who cares? Write it. Oh, it's a rare pair? Write it. You're worried people will hate it? Fuck the haters. Write it. Writing is about having fun. It's about reaching that one person that finds your work and loves it. Even if no one reads it - you still accomplished something. You still wrote it. And no one can take that from you.

How do you recommend getting quickly acquainted with your story and it's most important characters?

Hi there! Here’s what I recommend for getting quickly acquainted with a story and its characters.

I always start with getting the base of the story; the overall tone, its genres, and the settings/locations, figured out. Then I make some Pinterest boards* and playlists to get a feel for what I want the general vibe of the story to be.

After that, I move on to creating the characters. I usually start with making them completely separate from the story because I’ve found that it opens them up for more development that'll connect them to it later on.

I come up with the character’s personality first, starting with 3-5 traits and/or keywords, and then move onto getting their appearance and style down using Pinterest boards* and browsing online stores. Then I'll write out some short bios about them, and include things like their age, gender identity and pronouns, their race and ethnicity, height and build, disabilities and/or health conditions, background, family, and hobbies. I'll also make playlists for them and their arcs.

Then, once I get all the worldbuilding and characters set up, I start writing the story. With the exception of some darker moments, I've found that I connect with it and the characters best by not taking the first draft seriously, like at all, and making a point to write out almost every scene, situation, and piece of dialogue that I can come up. It doesn’t matter how silly, out of pocket, weird, awkward, or cringy it is, it’ll still get written.

And it's how I’ve gotten some of my favourite character interactions and dynamics. Selene and her sister, Delmar, for example. I thought it’d be funny to have a scene where Selene hands her ice cream over to Delmar so she can play a carnival game, and then when she's done, Delmar hands her own ice cream to her and hardly attention is brought to the switch, but since writing that scene it turned into a thing that they almost always do when they're together, and getting along.

I've also found that writing from multiple points of view is helpful as well, even if they don't make it into the finished story, because it means I have to look at pretty much everything; the plot, the characters, the interactions, the stakes, etc, through multiple different sets of eyes.

How to achieve everything without failing in the attempt.

The year is coming to an end and making a visionboard has become very popular again. So, today I will teach you and explain how to make a visionboard in a simple way, how to make it work and what it is. Get comfortable and read it.

ꔫ First of all, this is all based on my experience and that of some of my followers or people on the internet. Remember that there is no "wrong" way to make a vision board, but there are steps that you should definitely follow. Please let me know if I'm wrong about something or your way of doing them! Let's get started.

What is a vision board? ꔫ A vision board, also known as a "vision table", stands as a powerful tool in the context of the law of attraction. Its effectiveness lies in the combination of visualization and focusing positive thoughts towards specific objects or objectives.

This technique involves creating a board - physical or digital - that acts as a visual collage of dreams, goals and desires. Giving you motivation to fulfill them.

Part 2: How do I use a vision board?

ꔫ In a VB you can include images, keywords, phrases or any element that represents your goal, but here is a quick little guide:

Clarity of objectives: Identify your goals, they have to be clear and well defined. You can divide them into different parts such as economy, health, studies, etc. It is also important how clearly you visualize an image, what makes you feel or think. Since this is very important when manifesting, that is, if you want to have peace, put an image that gives you peace. If you want to manifest a cell phone, do not put any image, but the image of the cell phone you want.

Organization: It has to be an organized and understandable collage. I recommend organizing according to the relationships they have for better understanding.

Make the collage: You can do it anywhere, in canva, picsart, print the images and then paste them on a poster, board or notebook.

Visible location: The most important part! Even if it makes you feel embarrassed, you should see the vision board so that you know what your goals are, why you do what you do, and where you are heading. Place it in a place where it is always in sight on a daily basis.

Constant action: Don't leave everything to visualization, you can also take action to make those wishes come true. Instead of saying "I'm going to wait for that" change it to "you wait because I'm going to move forward to get that."

Images: They have to be images from your perspective, like you're already in that place or you already have that object. They have to inspire you or give you value, it's no use having an image that reminds you of bad things or makes you sad.

Affirmations: You can accompany it with affirmations that have to do with your images, you can put them behind the image (if you printed or cut it out) or write them anywhere, the important thing is to have it as an accompaniment to your Vision Board. I clarify that this part is not mandatory, it is only if you want to do it. Here is an example: "in this 2025 I will/must…", "in this 2025 I have/got…", "I am…", "I have…", etc…

Mistake: Overthinking your vision board. Avoid striving for perfection or feeling embarrassed by big goals. Instead, embrace the process, create without rules, and be honest about what you want. Every image and word should reflect a clear intention and inspire action. For example, rather than just adding a salad, pair it with images or words that evoke the energy and motivation to achieve your goals, like a fit version of yourself. A meaningful "why" will guide you to the "how" and turn your vision into reality.

Part 3: How do I see or have results?

ꔫ It is essential to remember that the process of manifestation requires patience and trust in the perfect timing of the universe. Results can manifest in different ways and at different times, depending on several factors, including intentions, level of belief, and actions you take on a daily basis.

You have to remember that consistency always pays off, and that results are not going to appear overnight. You have to take action to achieve those changes, claim them, and make them yours.

Manifesting doesn't mean just sitting back and waiting, it involves taking action in the direction of your goals.

Part 4: Arcana of the year and what your 2025 will be like.

ꔫIt has been very popular to see and hear people say that it is good to know what arcane awaits you in 2025. The arcana can offer you a symbolic guide to face the year. At around 5 pm on a Thursday in December 2022, a privacy- and information-freedom-focused programmer named Micah Lee learned, to his shock, that he had just been banned from Twitter. His crime: posting a link to @Elonjets, an account on the competing social media service Mastodon that tracked the location of the private jet of Twitter’s new billionaire owner, Elon Musk—a link that Musk would later claim amounted to “doxing” despite the jet’s location info being publicly available.

For a moment, Lee grieved the loss of an account he'd spent years building, with more than 50,000 followers. Then, almost immediately, that feeling was replaced with relief to have escaped a platform he felt was already in precipitous moral decline. Since Musk had taken it over two months earlier, Twitter's new owner had already allowed previously banned far-right and even neo-Nazi figures back onto the service in the name of free speech—while simultaneously axing the accounts of leftists. Perhaps getting banned for offending the mercurial mogul behind those partisan decisions was “a good way to go,” Lee decided.

He hasn't looked back. Twitter eventually told Lee he could return to the service if he deleted his @Elonjets tweet. Instead, he stayed off the platform for eight months before finally deleting that post, but only so that he could log in and delete his entire history on the platform. A few months later, after Twitter had become X, he wrote a few messages promoting a book he'd written—all now deleted, too—and says he has barely touch the service otherwise. “Honestly, my mental health is much better since then,” he adds.

Now, Lee wants to help you achieve that same cleansing release. Today, he launched Cyd—an acronym for “Claw back Your Data”—a desktop application designed to give users more control over their X history: archiving it, trimming it to their preferences, or destroying it altogether. In the free version of Cyd, the program allows anyone to download their X posts—Cyd can save up to 2,000 of your most recent posts itself, or you can use X's built-in feature that allows you to download your entire archive—and then automatically delete them. For $36 a year, users can access Cyd's premium features, like erasing the contents of their account with more fine-grained filters based on variables like date, number of likes or retweets, or keywords, un-retweeting or removing likes from posts en masse, and unfollowing all X users.

While Cyd for now is designed specifically for managing—or emptying out—your X account, Lee says he hopes to eventually add other features for carrying out the same archiving and deletion functions on services like Facebook and Reddit. “A handful of billionaires like Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg and Jeff Bezos control all the platforms that we use all the time and where we have all our data,” Lee says. “I want to basically make it so that the users of these platforms—everybody else who isn't one of these really rich tech billionaires—has a bit more power.”

Lee is launching Cyd in the midst of a mass X exodus: Millions of users have fled the service in the wake of the election of Donald Trump, many turned off by Elon Musk's support for Trump in the form of both campaign contributions and in his own nonstop political posts, as well as the increasingly conservative bent of X's remaining user base. The social media Bluesky, in particular, appears to have gained most of those X refugees, adding at least 8 million users in the weeks after the election.

“I think it's incredibly timely for people to delete as much as they can, as much as they want to, off of X, and just stop using the platform,” Lee says, “and try to take some of its influence away and move it to better platforms like Bluesky or Mastodon.”

Cyd is only one of several apps like TweetDeleter and Redact.dev that offer to archive and prune your X account. But unlike TweetDeleter, Cyd allows mass deletion of posts in its free version. While Redact.dev offers more free deletion features than Cyd, Cyd's $36 paid version is about half the price of Redact's $6 a month premium plan. It also offers some features that Redact doesn't, like deleting posts based on number of likes or retweets, so that users can, for instance, scrub all but their most viral posts.

Despite Cyd's timeliness, Lee says he's been working on a social media archiving and deletion tool for years, even before Musk acquired Twitter. In 2019, he released Semiphemeral, an earlier app with social media management features similar to Cyd, partially in response to his own experience of becoming the target of harassment and antisemitic tweets in the previous years. To perform its social media archiving and curation, Semiphemeral tapped into Twitter's API, an interface to its backend data provided to developers.

A few months after Musk acquired Twitter, however—and after the site summarily banned Lee and a handful of other journalists for linking to @Elonjets—Twitter ended free access to that API, killing Semiphemeral. A year later, however, Lee was laid off from his job as the director of information security at the news outlet the Intercept, along with about a third of the newsroom, and started looking for projects to work on. He soon figured out that he could revive Semiphemeral by designing it to automatically view and scrape X pages from a web browser instead of using X's API. “Everything it does is actually something you can do yourself in a web browser,” Lee says. “It would just take you a lot more time.” He also rebranded the app to Cyd in an attempt to make its name easier to remember and spell, and created a cute blue bird in a pirate mask (also named Cyd) to serve as its animated logo.

Though it's cheaper than some other options, Cyd's annual cost of $36 for its premium features will no doubt still be too steep for many users. Lee says he plans to work with organizations that represent at-risk groups to offer the tool for free to those who need it. He also points out, perhaps only half-jokingly, that $36 is less than half the annual cost of a Twitter blue account.

More to the point, he says that he hopes that unlike some of his previous software projects—the secure and anonymous file-sharing tool Onionshare and the safe-download protection app Dangerzone—he hopes this one will have a business model that gives him time to work on it and expand its feature set to include other social media platforms. “I would love to make it so that it can pay for itself,” Lee says, “so that I can make it bigger.”

Despite those big ambitions, Lee says that he hadn't quite intended to launch Cyd just as Bluesky experiences a user explosion at X's expense—and as more users than ever consider the motives and power of the tech billionaires who control the platforms they use.

“I knew that X was going down the drain, and I knew that people would be pissed off about it. I didn't really quite realize that people would be quitting en masse like they are now," says Lee. “It just happens to be perfect timing.”

Re: A Word on the Prototyping Process for Rotdolls. Internal Communication.

It has come to my attention that there is a bit of confusion among staff regarding the development, prototyping, and testing processes for the SPIRAL (Synthetic Priority-Intensive Reborn Automata Limbsprite) series Rotdoll. This will be a brief overview regarding the questions I found prevalent or important to note.

To start, the transitional candidate must be in a state considered “too far gone,” "incurable" or “irreparable.” This is the number one criteria used when our manufacturers’ scouting contractors are procuring viable product. In fact, we tend to advise them on using those exact keywords. These candidates are rotting, barely functional, and while we cannot “fix” them, we can give them a chance. Once a promising candidate is located, we make contact and gain approval. Then the rebirth can begin.

The sedated Limbsprite is brought in, and we begin taking our protocolar measurements. Stretch out the legs, measure from heel to back of knee. From back of knee to buttocks. Around the widest section of the thigh. Around the knee. Around the widest section of the calf. Around the ankle. Repeat the same pattern on the other limbs; There should be no skipping of the second leg, as these naturally occurring bodies have imperfections and mismatched measurements that must be accounted for in the upgrading/rebirthing process.

Once the measurement phase is complete, our manufacturing drones are utilized in crafting what we call the Reciprocity Vessel Shell, or more commonly the RV-Shell, for the lucky Limbsprites who make it this far. They should consider themselves to have won the lottery! Their Shell will keep them going, as well as allow them to act out fulfilling lives in service to those they are in the possession of. But I’m getting ahead of myself. Next is the programming phase.

Once the Shell has been installed on the fleshwire of the Limbsprite’s exterior, and the necessary processing, function and suppression components (which come with our proprietary firmware pre-loaded) have been implanted into the subject’s brain and body, we can begin the programming process. This stage is the most time intensive, as there has to be a determination made based on the individual unit regarding what services it can or should be put forth to perform.

Maybe this Rotdoll is more suited for deployment in war, or perhaps this one is only to be used for janitorial service. This one is bound for corporate chauffeuring, and this one will be the worlds most efficient espionage and infiltration tool. To draw from a real example, take prototypal batch F; Most, if not all, Rotdolls belonging to batch F were in some capacity suited for direct combat. This, however, is atypical. Most batches are far more diversified in their application potential; Batch H, for instance, contained no two Rotdolls consigned to the same Service. This variance in Rotdoll implementation is something our company (rightfully!) touts above our competitors; It takes a massive amount of expertise to be able to direct such dissimilar units on their individual utilities. Yes, due to this, we have investors hesitant to buy in, given that the demand ebbs and flows depending on the stock we have at any given time, but the investors we do have remain passionate about the work we do here, and know to trust our process, as they have seen the broadly-applicable results.

To continue the process, we reinforce what the Executives have come to call the “Exertive Will.” This is the drive that our SPIRALs (and all Rotdolls broadly) experience that pushes them towards the goal we assign to them. With Rotdolls being more prone to hardware exhaustion, processing fatigue, Wirepain, and the industry-dreaded Techrot than the average automata on the market, we strive to imprint the Exertive Will on our units very early and very concertedly, to ensure that the units we distribute are not doomed to early failure and unmarketability.

I won't get into the weeds on the details of Exertive Will. That is jargon for our engineers to untangle. The purpose of this email is just to clear up some of the disconcertment that seemed to be spreading around among some of our newer employment bracket.

My Preliminary Thoughts on Pokemon Legends Z-A

I'm still erring on the side of cautious optimism because I'm skeptical of how previous Pokemon games have performed from a gameplay, processing, and graphical standpoint. That said, optimism is the keyword I want to emphasize here because, based on the trailers we saw today during the Pokemon Presents showcase, it seems like they're adhering to the philosophy of innovating and mixing up mainstays of the Pokemon formula, an initiative they established in Pokemon Legends Arceus.

I will admit, back when Z-A was first announced and we saw that the game would be limited to Lumiose City, I was worried that the game would be rather narrow in scope and explorable space.

However, since then, I've come to recognize that open-world games that are too expansive have often pushed the limits of its world's open-world concept to such extremes that it detracts from the game's other assets, aspects, and potential. As such, I find myself less worried about the game being too small, but I still hope that Z-A will capitalize on the depth and detail of the space it allows, big or small as it may be. What I want to see is a dense, populous city with plenty of people and features for me to lose myself in rather than having to comb a landscape that, while beautiful, has little of interest in it save for a few landmark locations. If the trailer was any indication, we might have reason to explore, if only to find Zygarde Cells, which I'm hoping will be more than just this game's version of Koroks as seen Wild-era Zelda games.

One of the more intriguing things the latest trailer showed was its revamped battle system, which I'm hopeful will add a flexibility and depth to Pokemon battles not yet seen in games. It seems to build on the accomplishments of Legends Arceus but has the potential to become so much more interesting. Allegedly, positioning, distance, and area-of-effect matters, which I think will be something that truly take Pokemon battling to a dimension higher than we saw even in Legends Arceus, and certainly several degrees higher than the regression we saw in Scarlet and Violet.

While it was hard to judge from the trailers, I wonder if this battle system is going to feature something closer to a real-time system than the turn-based one we're used to. That has me slightly apprehensive admittedly, but depending on implementation, this could be something that truly makes battles more dynamic, requiring one to think on their toes tactically while keeping timing in mind. As well, it's hard to see whether moving your player character will determine where your Pokemon battler moves or if some other measure of control will determine that. Or perhaps Pokemon will move themselves, giving them some level of autonomy that you'll have to work around when planning your attacks and tactics. While the latter option feels like it could enter the realm of RNG annoyance, it would colour the Pokemon as instinctive beings that you truly have to try and anticipate and cooperate with, lending a whole new idea to the idea of bonding with your Pokemon, something that's been only surface-level in the games before this.

Regardless of the outcome, I welcome this experimentation to help Pokemon's battle system evolve. While I had not been a fan of the Power Attack/Fast Attack system Legends Arceus used, I was glad they were at least trying something new, especially with the flexibility in how you approach catching and/or battling wild Pokemon, and I look forward to seeing how this new system measures up.

Outside of battle, it looks like they're tying back into the Wild Area philosophy again (dubbing them Wild Zones, this time), which makes some sense, considering the setting of the game. I'll reserve full judgement on that for when we see the game proper, as it could be linked to a setting or story link that makes the decision make more sense. That said, I believe the Wild Area system did work well in Sword and Shield, but if there's one thing in Scarlet and Violet I did enjoy, it was the fluidity of its regions and the fact that Pokemon could show up just about anywhere outside of towns. I hope I won't find the Wild Zone system implemented in Z-A stifling after having that level of freedom.

Exploration-wise, I come back to what I said earlier in that I'm not as worried about a more confined area to run around in as I once was, as my opinions on open-world games have changed quite a bit in the last few years. The trailer did help alleviate some lingering doubts I had by showing that you can explore rooftops and the like, which I imagine will make traversal and exploration all the more interesting and exciting.

One note I will make is that I'm not sure what to make of that "double-jump" we saw the player made between building rooftops. It looked a bit odd, though I lack context for a judgement on whether that's because of an ability granted to the player through a story or a Pokemon or if the animation/display of the ability hasn't been polished yet.

On the note of polish, besides that odd jump, it does seem like the extra time taken for developers to work on this game has yielded a look that, while still leagues behind other games on the Switch and especially other consoles/PC, is a marked improvement over the tech-demo appearance layered over Legends Arceus and the only very minor upgrade on that seen in Scarlet and Violet. While I'm not one to make decisions on purchasing a game based solely on graphics, it was depressing to see so little care put into both the aforementioned games appearance and engine. It will go a long way to restoring my enthusiasm for the Pokemon franchise if this game proves to be stable both in graphics and its engine.

As with most Pokemon games, I'm not expecting a ton from Z-A's story, but I am intrigued, considering that we've not seen exactly what era this game is taking place in compared to the mainline Pokemon game series.

Further, the fact that AZ is just there running a hotel raises all sorts of questions that I cannot begin to even fathom the answers to until we experience the game's story properly. I'd find his appearance making more sense if he were to use another name to disguise himself. But the fact he doesn't implies to me that this game could be set after the events of XY or could be some sort of alternate timeline or alternate universe where he didn't have as much impact on Kalos as he did as we saw in Pokemon XY. Whatever the answer is, the idea of solving this mystery intrigues me, though I'm tempering my expectations since I've not much faith in Pokemon doing anything other than handwave away their story beats or plot holes in favour of focusing on gameplay above all else (a core Nintendo philosophy that I've come to expect).

When this is all said and done, I have to say: "Congratulations, Pokemon. Even with me having to skip all your Scarlet and Violet DLC because I've become rather disillusioned with your lack of care and polish in your games of late, you've managed to tease my interest enough to have some cursory excitement about Pokemon Legends Z-A."

Granted, it might be easy to bait my interest with the setting, as I have a fondness for Kalos that will not abate, it being the region of the first new Pokemon game I played in my adulthood after my long absence from the franchise. But even with that, it would take a lot to make me want to consider dumping what I figure will be a full 80-90 dollars to buy the game. I hope that it'll feel more worth it this time around.

Like I said before, I remain cautiously optimistic, but that's a stark improvement from the listless disappointment I'd been feeling since having completed Scarlet and Violet.

Until I know what to think for sure, I'll just hold out hope that I'll get to run with my happy lil' Tepig around one of my favourite cities in the Pokemon franchise.
