It had been six hours. 

Peter had been in the operating room for three of those. You swore you heard him flatline once from the waiting room. 

A few nurses came by to check on you and May, but neither of you had been able to find the words. Your world was laying open on a table, bleeding out for hours, so much pain… so much left unsaid. It was hard to think straight as you stared at the colorful checkered floor, the putrid salmon color and the little streaks of black, red and white making your spinning head get even dizzier. 

All you wanted was to hold his hand, feel his touch one more time, tell him the one thing you hadn’t been able to say. 

You let him down by never saying it. He was going to die and you weren’t going to have ever said those three words he so patiently waited for. 

It was Christmas when he said it first, gently playing with your hair on the couch while you forced him to watch some stupid rom-com you found with Lindsay Lohan falling for an inn-keeper. And he was staring at you instead of the tv. 

“This is so unrealistic… she would’ve died from a fall that-”

And now, it was nearly four months after he said it and you still hadn’t been able to muster the courage and he very well could die on the operating table. Or in a hospital room from a blood infection. Or from a stitch coming loose. 

He could die not knowing that you loved him more than anything you had loved before. 

You let him down, you made him wait so long and for what? Why did you have to be so afraid? 

You were sitting next to his Aunt, the cuffs of her sleeves and the soles of her shoes bloodied from finding him and immediately trying to resuscitate. She was shaking and hadn’t spoken to you since she called you to tell you what had happened.

How she found him half a mile from their home, lying in a pool of his own blood, a gash going from his neck to his hip, crossing over his body like a seatbelt. May told you not to try and see him before they rushed him in on the gurney, but you couldn’t stop yourself. 

The red of his suit was blended so perfectly with the blood on his mouth. 

And when you saw him all you could think about was how badly he hated having blood on his lips, how he would gag when he bit his tongue too hard or when his busted lip would open back up and some blood would drip to his shirt. You wanted to wipe his bloodied lips, clean it off of him so he couldn’t taste the metallic flavor he despised so deeply, but May took your hand and forced you to stay by her side outside the ambulance, watching his lifeless body get wheeled from the ER loop. 

You couldn’t stop crying, she couldn’t either. And you wanted to hug her, beg her to talk to you a bit more, but you couldn’t. Peter wasn’t just your world, he was hers too. 

That was her son. 

Her boy. 

The baby she took in and cared for, the toddler she stopped from falling down the stairs, the awkward kid that she fixed his glasses with tape, the angsty teen she had to console when their favorite man died, the man who was laying cold under a surgeon's knife. 

Her last family member.

To seek her comfort would be selfish, and so you sat silently, counting lines and scratches in the tiled floor, picking the lint from your sweatpants as you were trying to calm your nerves. 

Against your better judgement, you reached over, grabbing May’s hand and looked at her, finally noticing her puffy eyes and flushed cheeks. When you went to speak she just moved and tugged you to her, gripping you so tight you weren’t able to breath properly, but it was the hug you needed. And you reciprocated, holding onto her tightly as you cried into her shoulder, unable to stop yourself. 

After what felt like six more hours, the doors opened and you watched as a surgeon walked out, looking around and you felt a spark, standing up, staring at him as he scanned the room.

“Mrs. Parker?” He announced to the entire waiting room and May immediately stood, grabbing your hand and nodding.

“That’s me… how's our boy?” Her grip tightened slightly against your hand, steadying herself along with your shaky legs. 

“Good news, he will be okay. The bleeding was miraculously slow and he-” 

You zoned out, staring at the door he emerged from and you felt your heart start to race. Peter was okay, he was alive somehow. Something inside you was pulling you towards the hallway you knew he was in, the rest of the hospital fading away as you let yourself envision him, alive and bandaged, exhausted but… still here. 

“Can we visit him?” You ask, coming back to for a moment, cutting off the surgeon's current sentence. 

“Peter is currently being transferred to our inpatient unit, just one floor up, once he is settled he’ll be allowed visitors.” The surgeon was calm, a smile on his lips as he looked at you and May. 

You squeezed May’s hand so tight and watched as a few nurses left the hallway, exhausted and chatting about their plans. 

Peter was okay. You’d see him soon.
