Hello, [ANY FANDOM] fandom. You have insisted the reason you don't talk about female characters as often as the male characters is because they're less interesting because of sexist writers (even in cases where that is demonstrably not true). However, you have before read into male characters with the depth of a puddle to make them extremely interesting. Why is it that you can do that readily for the male characters, but not the women?

Before you is the media in question and a typewriter. You will consume the piece of media again, but focus your analytical lens not on the men, but the women. After which, you will write out an analysis for her. If you say she's whiny, call her a bitch, act like everything she does is awful, complain she's getting in the way of your puddle-deep mlm pairing, or flatten her down into a consumable category of "girlboss" or "mom friend" or "braincell holder" or any of the many sexist categories women have been forced into for years, you will be flattened down until you have the same level of depth as you perceive her to have.

Apology in Advance for the probable incoming Sulemio v Destiel Poll posts.

There are layers to why the dumb ship poll has me feeling so passionate, some are: -Sulemio more or less checked off a Bucket List Want I thought I would die before seeing it become a reality. That being: a Sapphic Anime couple where the main focus and story doesn't revolve around discovering or accepting their sexuality and showing it can be a successful story public perception wise and money wise (G Witch has some of that self discovery stuff but it's like a D or E level plot). And having it so the gay relationship can't be perceived away as besties or sisterhood or with a Bury Your Gays end. -wlw/GL ships constantly getting overshadowed by mlm ships or get played down to hype up mlm ships because "there can only be 1 lgbtqi+ ship" mentality in fandoms. -Sulemio fandom was vibing and more or less quiet until this rewoke us up here on Tumblr. We are all once again speaking and writing deep analytical lengthy posts about how deep, well written and portrayed the love between both characters were not only in subtext but throughly explicit sentences in dialogue or actions of Suletta and Miorine, and the world around them. I am very happy to join in and revisit the awesomeness that their story was since I can't truly replicate the journey that was watching their story as it developed in real time. (Shout out to my 2 het cis male acquaintances who nagged me to give G Witch a shot back when only ep 0 and 1 were out you guys freaking amazing. Bros gave me unforgettable memories.) -But a big one I see not getting talked about a lot is how this match up is giving a big and much needed reality check to western-media-live-action-only-consumers/fans that: Just because something is an animation it does not make that type of art/storytelling/show/whatever you want to call it inferior to live action. A few years back I saw so many west live action tv fans shit endlessly and mercilessly on Magical Girl Utena because of a similar ship poll where it had come down to live action fandom ship vs canon anime ship. (iykyk, I don't want to restart that shit up again since it hurt a lot to watch as someone who liked the ship that was leading but didn't watch Utena-I'm too weak for that hurt- see the show and its contribution towards actual wlw/gl representation get shit on) A lot of the criticisms and punchlines of statements were mocking people for getting attached to cartoons as "grown ass adults"; a criticism any animation enjoyer probably knows all too well. Post so many animation shows in western streaming sites get cancelled or be erased and locked behind vaults because the CEOs think there is no fanbase or value in creating animation, this sentiment more towards animated shows with depth in their stories. I think back to that poll and the ensuing shit show. To think about that back then and see a reflection of that situation with the Ship (Sulemio) that has been stated to be inspired by the ship from Utena (Utenanthy) that was shat on so much by similar media consumers back then who perceived and said animation is a lesser form of storytelling-after seeing so many animation shows I enjoyed get cancelled because of this same sentiment from people thinking no adult wants animation as entertainment- to see Sulemio beat "the greater known" ship from a western live action media show that didn't even want the gay representation associated with itself, it feels like properly bandaging a seeping wound that you were letting "dry out". This all still feels like ship war with ships and fandoms that shouldn't have reason to beef, but the catharsis of seeing such a: powerful, moving, and overall amazing story that is Gundam the Witch from Mercury (free on Youtube to watch btw) and Sulemio's love story get recognized when it still feels like animation as a storytelling device gets looked down upon and has partially been erased, is making me cautiously optimistic that maybe in a few years we can get our amazing in depth animated shows that got taken away because animated storytelling is "just for kids" or "isn't good enough".

As for the first part? That’s hard. I think my writing style leans more introspective, so it can kind of vary based on what you’re going for. Because I tend to think about these movies very specifically, I found how I write about characters on my personal analysis, look deeper than the surface. Hell, take notes on shit. I also recommend the novelizations for learning how characters tic. Especially for characters other than Peter, you get a lot more about how they think because you actually spend more time in their heads and you get more of a look into their thought process and what effects how they act. The novels are good. Read them in general. I have files available on request because they slap.

But honestly? Don’t put too much pressure on yourself to be perfect. Especially if you’re new to it, make sure you’re having fun above everything. I personally tend to obsess over the mechanics of storytelling and character analysis, sure, but that’s what I find enjoyable. If doing the same makes you like something less, don’t! Especially when you’re starting out, I also think it’s more beneficial to work out more of the mechanics of writing itself. At the same time you learn characterization, learn how to vary sentence structure, to write engaging and descriptive prose without it feeling suffocating, find your personal style. And don’t expect it to be fast. The people you admire have been doing this for years. For another thing, read more. Genuinely, it’ll help you write better. I am a better writer when I’ve been engaging with things that have good writing.

As for part two of the ask, I guess there’s a couple things? I’m insistent upon writing with more emphasis on Harry’s mental illness, both because I’m tired of so much focus on Norman’s non existent illness (that’s the most neurotypical man I’ve ever seen) while ignoring the character they probably actually intended to be read as mentally ill. I also insistently defend and focus on MJ’s reasons for doing things because as a lesbian I’m hyper aware of all fandoms favor for white men that’s caused by a lot of subconscious misogyny and racism and fans are always more critical of women than men.

I do hate a lot more things than I like. I love being critical, it’s in my soul to be analytically critical of things. I hate how a lot of sm3 rewrites will effectively make Harry into a psychopathic crazy slasher villain. Ignoring the ableism to making the guy who hallucinates into That, I also think it’s a major case of throwing the baby out with the bath water with sm3. Harry was never going to be that kind of villain. His arc was always going to be about breaking out of the cycle of abuse by defying his father and becoming his own person. I’m also generally annoyed when fics insist on calling Norman “neglectful” or a “bad father” instead of just saying he was emotionally abusive. It feels like they just think it’s a dirty word someone can’t come back from so they mislabel things. Also a sort of cartoonish example of how if someone doesn’t hit you or shout at you, your experiences will be doubted.

I hate it when fans of other mlm peter ships write Harry as an abusive ex. Just make an oc.

This is pettier and I’ll admit it, but I hate it when raimi Harry is just arbitrarily shoved with a woman. I can give MJ a pass, I have my read of it but if you can sell me on it I’ll allow it. But most of the time, it just feels like Obligatory Heterosexual Love Interest. I’ve found fics that can sell me on it, there’s this one on ffnet I dug up where he ended up with Gwen that I thought was fine less for Harrygwen and more because they wrote them both well. If you can sell me on it I’ll let it slide but it’s like, semi obvious to me when throwing his ass with a woman is more part of like… people seeing a love story as an obligatory part of a happy ending or someone not liking it when Harry is read as queer. It’s fine if you don’t read him as queer but if your romance sucks I’m gonna say your romance sucks. Romantic love is not a prerequisite to a happy ending. He can be happy single because he has friends. Give him some cats. Make him adopt a kid.

It’s somewhat connected, but I also hate a lot of like… sloppier Norman redemptions. I maintain my stance that no character is ever irredeemable because it’s about change but even pushing aside my personal belief I don’t think Norman would ever change, the guy is the Greek god of doubling down, people never let him take responsibility for his actions or otherwise narratively excuse him. I can’t walk two feet without finding it excused by the mental illness people headcanon onto him because mcu decided to write offensive tropes against people with DID onto him or finding a way to blame poor Emily/Caroline when we aren’t supposed to take Norman at his word that she was a bitch or completely misunderstanding the narrative purpose of Ambrose Osborn in the comics to use him as an excuse and also minimize the ways he emotionally abuses Harry. I also hate the way people will say anything but that he was abusive. He was abusive. I know it feels like a bad word you can’t come back from, but he was abusive. Just say it. Him being abusive doesn’t mean he can’t stop being abusive if you want to write that. Ambrose exists to create a cycle of abuse. Narratively, it needs to be a cycle. Harry is the one who actually breaks it. It can’t work with Norman because a major aspect of Harry breaking the cycle is that he is softer than Norman, that he has dozens of traits that Norman doesn’t have. There’s significance to that.

I honestly just hate a lot of Norman writing. I don’t think redeeming him is impossible because of my general worldview and I’ve read fics that have done it. (Really it was fic singular and it’s because they didn’t shy away from what a POS he is) but among those is like. Christ, it’s so wild to see fics in which he’s a father figure to MJ as if he didn’t both ogle her, a girl 30-40 years his junior and also threaten to rape her as the goblin. Like. That’s wild. That’s absolutely wild.

I also hate DID Norman headcanons. How am I not supposed to think it’s wildly insulting to write a character as a system when the only reason people started seeing him as one was because of the MCU’s ableist writing decisions in NWH that connected him to negative stereotypes against people with DID and OSDD. Stereotypes that the trilogy itself put actual work into avoiding because even in 2002 those writers understood that the good alter bad alter trope is terrible.

I will say that none of Hollys extended Norman writing hatred is directed at people who are currently in the fandom. That was more like, circa 2021-2022 NWH fandom things that made me want to die.

alright time to write an essay detailing whatever yaoi has done to my girl nancy wheeler. so like, even when it comes to yaoi shippers nancy has had stonathan, harringrove, AND steddie over four seasons with steddie already having massive popularity + the other shippers, wheras thankfully eleven only has to deal with byler shippers when it comes to the victimization. but not to diminish eleven any more because she has def gone through it in fandom, im going to get into nancy's stuff: you will notice all three ships she supposedly gets in the way of (ignoring jargyle because the shippers are chill in my experience) involve steve harrington, AKA the most popular character if i had to guess and the white boy of the month. see, they were dating at one point in s1 and s2. the breakup was messy. like he kinda was complicit in her slutshaming at one point and didnt let her grieve her dead best friend properly and she ambiguously (as in nobody can fucking decide when the break up was) cheated on him so yeah. messy. mutually. if not more on steve's side given he was a bit of an asshole in s1-2 but gets better. yadda yadda fast forward to harringrove in particular, AKA steve x the guy who attacked a black child and abused his younger sibling (and im not attacking anyone thats just. what happened). basically 90% of them try to convince people nancy is abusive for the two arguments that occurred and is a slut and privileged (never mind steve being probably the most well off member of the main cast + hes a white guy in the 80s) blah blah blah. also ironic they call her abusive OFTEN when billy (one half of harringrove) kinda like threatens his sister max and breaks her things and otherwise abuses her Often. but yeah. they hate her for breaking his heart. they hate her for getting in the wya of their ship possibly. they hate her in general. add that to the general fandom misogyny and suddenly a large number of people are writing essays about how much they hate her and how she's a piece of shit, actually. fast forward to s4 and steddie and a new problem arises: steddie shippers keep flooding her character and ship tags with primarily steddie. so now your options regarding her are mlm ships and mlm shippers shitting on her. also keep in mind there is now more content for half of that ship, a guy who shows up for an hour and dies in the same season, than nancy, a mc. and if you like nancy ships like jancy or ronance, too bad those tags are flooded as well. as in someone did analytics in august for ronance i think and at one point the majority of main pairings in the ronance ao3 tags itself was steddie. either way both ships usually end up as side ships or bait into a steddie centric fic or tumblr post. or nancy ends up third wheeling and getting them together. as a nice bonus (not really) recently steddie shippers have decided that they too hate nancy and have entire posts and common plots (i have seen tumblr ficlets/hc's and people discussing this as a common trope for steddie fics on ao3) about how nancy was a horrible person who damaged steve's self esteem and ability to be in a relationship or something from a break up, as if the relationship wasnt mutually harmful and compounded by nancy's whole dead best and possibly only friend thing. and whoops for ships like ronance that isnt allowed either because steve's friend isn't allowed to interact with his ex despite the fact that said friend literally said he was an ass in the s1-2 timeline. all of this making it impossible to find any positive content without it being interrupted for a character who, if i remember correctly, has almost as much screentime as eleven (and eleven at least has popular fan content and other ships that dont somehow loop around to byler/mike). and whats worse is that while canon doesnt have yaoi victimization it does have heteronormative bullshit in which she is forced into a love triangle with the same guys TWO TIMES. she literally cant win so let her win a poll maybe also sorry this is super fucking long <3

puts on scholar glasses. so for those who may be unaware when analyzing a text there are two main methods of interpretation, exegesis and eisegesis, right? Exegesis is close reading of the text itself, with interpretation and analysis grounded within the text (essentially, you can prove your statements by referencing the text), while eisegesis is interpretation based on personal emotions/agenda, projecting one’s biases or what they want to see onto the text.

I’m giving this little English 101 lesson because I feel like there’s a very similar parallel in the way fans interact with a piece of media in a fandom context, basically analytical engagement with text versus this idea of projection, aka finding gaps in the story where there’s not much information so that one can just make up whatever they want, essentially identifying an empty vessel where they can create their own story. Now to be clear this phenomenon is Not eisegesis (though I would argue it often involves eisegesis if the text is brought up at all lol) I just find the comparison helpful, and it’s why (in addition to just like, misogyny) in every fan space this weird thing happens where people become fixated on a random male character and mlm relationship that is nearly or completely nonexistent in the text. This is a very long winded way of me saying that because this Isn’t eisegesis exactly I need a different term for it so I can succinctly explain to people why I find [random male rarepair] so fucking bizarre

Me and @stormkitty97 just voice chatted, since I needed some help with some parts of my fic. One of the things we talked about is what if our Yuu's were guys instead of girls. Just as a thought experiment. This the shit that we agree would happen with Addie (my "Yuu"):

Instead of Adriana, it would be Adrian. His previous nickname would be Rin while his new one in TWST would be Ari.

He would be a subversion of the "Jerk Jock" Trope like how Addie is a subversion of the "Popular Mean Girl"/"Alpha Bitch" Trope.

I would imagine he would like a mixture of Vil and Steve Harrington from Stranger Things personality wise. Before the events of the story, he used to be a jerk and a playboy, who used to bully "whimper" guys, including beating people up really bad, and toyed with girl's hearts to make himself seem more manly and to fit in. He used that facade to hide his insecurities, "softer"/autistic traits and his intelligence. In reality, he's not actually like that. On the positive end, he's noble, kind, analytical, in his own head, loyal to those dear, and, despite what he thinks, smart and clever in his own right. While he's trying to get over his toxic masculinity and other bad traits from those days, it still sometimes pops out.

His character arc would be a bit different than Addie's. His would be about learning to be himself and coming into his own. That he doesn't have to be a playboy jerk or a pushover to be a decent guy. Kinda like an altered version of Epel's arc in the canon.

When he comes to TWST, his looks would still change for now unknown reasons. In this case, he would look more androgynous or "gender neutral" like Vil. Unlike Addie who thinks she had a glow up, he would freak the fuck out. (We also imagined a scenario where he sees his own reflection for the first time after taking a shower like Addie does in Heartslabyul. Instead of gawking in awe, he just screams like someone chopped his dick off. Ace bolts up stairs and throws the door open. He asks about what happened, since he screamed bloody murder. He nervously says nothing, something just startled him. Ace looks at him like, 'Ah-huh, sure dude.' xD)

As a side note, this is why that whole "female Yuu disguises herself with a potion to make her look like a dude" trope that sometimes pops up in fics wouldn't work in mine, even if I wanted to add it. All it would do is make Addie look Vil-like, which would defeat the purpose of it and go against the intention of these stories.

I also imagine that he would also feel like that's karma for bullying a guy for looking too girly and feminine.

Adrian would struggle with his new appearance, and think he's "ugly". Vil would help him to come to accept it and be confident about it.

Unlike Addie, I don't think Adrian would know that he's bi. (Because, unfortunately, it's more "socially acceptable" for a girl to be bi than a dude.) Once he starts crushing on Jamil, he would be confused and wonder why he thinks he's hot, going into denial about it. Ace would give him tough love during Pomefiore and straight up say, "That's because your bi or pan, dumbarse." He considers that as a possibility, but still feels lost and confused. Ace and Deuce help to coach him through that, since I hc them both as bi as well, and being queer in that world is far more socially accepted compared to real life.

If this was omegaverse, Adrian would be an omega, but not a typical "uwu quiet, meek softboi" kind you usually find in mlm stories like that. He would still be himself personality wise to subvert the stereotype. (I don't see any version of Addie EVER being like that. xD) I would imagine Jamil would be an alpha who hides his status to not upset the Asims, since he would a "higher status" then Kalim, despite being his servant. (I find this ironic for a number of reasons, even when talking about Vil and Addie like I have in my story now, but I won't say why. Because, spoilers.)

Granted, like I said before, I don't ever want to write a fic like this outside of maybe a few what-if one shots if I feel like it. I think the story works better with Addie as a girl for a number of reasons, and I just like writing female protags over male ones in general. But, it's fun to think about.

Description: Moth is relatively tall woman, she's a middle aged lady but you wouldn't really clock her as older than in her late 30's on first glance. She often puts aesthetic over practicality when picking out her clothing, though she can absolutely still kick someone's ass even while in a hoop skirt. She actually is pretty pleasant to talk to, as long as you don't commit anything deemed an act of betrayal*. She's analytical in her actions and sticks to her principles, even if most would not deem them moral, which allows her to both have a focused scientific mindset, and be a brilliant politician and tactician. While there are many things she has done that make her insanely irredeemable (see list of crimes/wrongdoings), she is also physically attractive and technically classifies as a milf, as well as has a background for why she chose to take those actions (which doesn't justify them, but puts them into perspective), so there would probably be at least one person who'd be a Moth defender till the end.

*Moth isn't afraid of many things, but someone very important to her betrayed her in the past and attempted to kill her, so she's more than slightly paranoid of it happening ever again. Because of that, she takes many, MANY precautions in selecting who she trusts with anything, and it takes the slightest slip-up for you to land on her shit list. Depends on how bad your actions were in her eyes, you will likely either be fired and declared an outlaw, or die due to abuse of a heavily flawed judicial system. The only exception to these rules is a literal deity, and that's only because he cannot be physically harmed.

Crimes: TW: mentions of child abuse, I'm going to be vague but it's still there REQUIRED CONTEXT: The story takes place across two dimensions, therefore the crimes will be explained in some detail in order for them to make sense

Description: Rose is a ghost that lives within the boundaries of the Whisper Court Ghost Sanctuary. She's been there for a very long time, more than most of the other ghosts, and she fucking hates it. The Sanctuary is home to a large variety of ghosts with a large variety of personalities, so it's often used as a training grounds for new paranormal investigators. Rose sees this as patronizing, and is the only ghost recorded to have killed an investigator that was in her home. She hates being there, she hates talking to people, she hates her existence and she wants to watch it burn. She is an incredibly powerful spirit, with multiple abilities (uncharacteristic, as most ghosts only have one). She leaves firey footsteps wherever she goes, can summon fire at will, her cries can be heard by the living if she's loud enough, and she can untie the ribbons in her hair, releasing the lesser spirits she has trapped within to attack others at her bidding. She hardly ever speaks, hardly changes expression, and will do anything she can to see those around her hurt for the crime of trapping her in this neighborhood. (Which isn't even true. -Allied with the main antagonist to kill everyone in the neighborhood. This would also kill her, as she's attached to it, but she hates it so much she doesn't even care -Killed multiple people, both before and after becoming a ghost -SO much arson. Just. So much arson. She even originally died in a building fire that she caused, though it was someone else who caused it to get out of hand to the point where it killed her -Antagonized the main character to the point of them almost entirely fading away from existence for no personal benefit to herself. She just doesn't like them -Is completely apathetic and does not care about the neighborhood and its inhabitants at all, but still takes every chance to hurt them that she can for no reason other than she gets personal satisfaction from seeing them in pain or distressed -Threw and ruined a plate of Lorelai's ghost cookies and it made her sad and this crime can never be forgiven

sorry to bring discourse thoughts here instead of on my private twitter account where nobody has to see it (especially because this is very much twitter-tier drama i feel like), but when it comes to discussions about the ratio of m/m work produced on ao3 vs f/f works i always found it absolutely crazy how people advocating for more f/f works always seem to stress that it isn’t that we need to be making LESS m/m and more that we just need to reflect on our willingness to write about male characters with depth and complexity over female characters, and how some underlying misogynistic thought may be at play for why we do that. yet people who consume/write mostly m/m who argue against that notion always just seem hell bent on justifying why we don’t need to be writing more f/f fiction in the first place and why they are completely justified in completely ignoring the existence of women in media in the first place. like lesbians saying that wlw deserve fanworks of similar quality and attention as mlm is like. an attack on their sacred right to write about men fucking each other in the ass or something.

i don’t think that we’re wrong in pointing out that, maybe not consciously, but on some level there’s a definite widespread reluctance in fandom to look at women in media and think about their characters beyond what’s delivered to us at a surface level. now it isn’t like everyone is like that, obviously, but when it comes to what people are willing to write, and what people are willing to read it definitely feels like male characters on average get way more? and you can see it so easily. over 5 million m/m works on ao3 and f/f doesn’t even break a million (last i checked), and i guarantee at least one third of that has f/f ships as background couples with little to no substance.

i’ve seen the argument around about how women in media are boring and that’s why men get more attention, and i feel like that’s an argument that could’ve worked in like 2013 anime communities when most of what got popular seemed to be shounen anime with primarily male casts but in the year of 2023 i just don’t think that’s true? like, at all. and not to mention that a character being ‘boring’ or lacking substance never seems to really keep male characters from gaining popularity. when people see a male character without much going on they seem to think “well how can i MAKE him interesting?” and so even the male characters with the least amount of substance can still get fanworks waxing poetic about their deep inner lives and struggles. but you never see that with female characters of similar quality, never. and the sad thing is that even as more media comes out that shows us female characters with rich narrative struggles and complexity we STILL don’t see that in 99% of fandom, save really for fandoms for media with female-dominated casts. so evidently it isn’t a ‘women are written bad’ problem. what is it then?

misogyny is such a no-no word in fandom and really i don’t know why. misogyny as a concept is something so deeply ingrained in society, i think that just about everyone regardless of gender or social status is guilty of some form of misogynistic thinking consciously or otherwise. and like i can totally get how it can feel like a personal attack when some random person online talks about the glaring lack of f/f works on ao3 and tosses out the word ‘misogyny’ as a possible root cause for why that gap exists. but also i feel like we as writers, artists, consumers, etc need to be willing to take a step back and recognize Why do people think this? why are we so unwilling to look at women in media with the same deeply analytical gaze as we do men? it isn’t to say that anyone who focuses more on m/m ships or writes mostly about men is a raging misogynist who hates women but i do think that there could be some unconscious misogyny at play, when looking at the bigger picture.

besides that i just think in general we as a society need to be more open and willing to listen when wlw in fandom bring up these issues. nobody is saying you can’t write about men but listening to wlw and having these discussions is important! it can be enlightening! and god i am just begging people to watch a piece of media and try to really pay attention to the women in it. not necessarily even for shipping but just like. look at the female mc and Think About Her the same way you think about men and try to reflect on her. what do you think is going on with her? what do you think she’s thinking as she does what she does, goes through what she goes through? what kind of conclusions can you come to about her deeper character from the way she acts on screen? and how do those compare to male characters who you think are written of a similar caliber? you can learn a lot from it, i think. and that willingness to extend critical thought to characters of all genders is extremely valuable.
