I don't see enough people mourning over the slow death of physical media. And I don't just mean TV shows, video games, or movies--which don't even get me started about how we don't really 'own' anything anymore. It includes notes, journals, and letters to one another...so much of our history is lost when we lose a password, a website goes down, a file/hardware is corrupted, or a platform disappears. History that doesn't seem important until you no longer have access to it. Physical media does a lot for memory recall. How many memories will we lose because we don't have something tangible to tie it back to? Something to hold in our hands and stir up those memories we thought were once lost? Sometimes I wonder what the difference between burning a book and losing access to physical media is when someone can pull the plug and remove your access so easily.

you were doing your daily night routine, but this time, you decided it would be fun to put on a face mask.

the packaging said it would help with your pores, so why not?

as you put the green face mask across your face, rafe walked in. as soon as his gaze settled on you he let out a loud chuckle. your eyebrows furrowed, clearly confused as to why he was laughing

his finger reaches over and pokes your face "what the hell is this babe?" he giggled "you look like a little green monster." he teased, giving your cheek another poke.

you swatted his hand away, and scoffed "It´s good for my skin." you shrugged. his smile didn´t fade and only grew with your irritated comment. you took a closer look at his face and noticed how huge his pores were.

"looks like you could use some," you said as you brought the brush with the green mask closer to his face. he took a step back and chuckled, "no way I'm putting that shit on my face."

you shot him a look and tilted your head "C´monn, it´s good for your skin." you stood up, took his hand, and pushed him to sit down on the chair "babe, no way." he protested again, trying to stand up, but you pushed him back down on the chair "babe, yes way." you mocked.

the brush touched his face, and he frowned immediately; the gooey mask felt strange, and he didn't like it at all.

he groaned "can´t believe you're doing this." he mumbled, clearly not happy. but you on the other hand were thrilled, it would help clear his pores and make his skin look amazing.

you smiled and said, "all done," as you finished applying the mask on him. he stood up from the chair and looked in the mirror, poking his cheek with a scowl on his face.

he went over to your bed and sat on the edge, pouting as he picked up your stuffed animal and held it close to his chest.

he watched you sit back down in the chair and continue applying the mask to your face. "s´ bullshit." he muttered under his breath, as he held tightly onto the stuffed animal.

I make these posts every once in a while but I think it's worth mentioning again that if you're interested in trying out old movies, a good option is to always see if your library includes any streaming service options you can access using your library account. Using library-supported streaming services is great because 1) supporting the library's programs means the library keeps getting funded 2) it's literally as easy as any paid-for streaming service 3) old movies are fun. I have access to Kanopy and Hoopla through my library, and here's a small sampling of what's available on them right now to stream for free:

Buy physical media. Buy CDs. Buy records. Buy tapes. Buy books. Buy physical artwork or prints. Take photos of yourself and get them developed at a photo processing booth. Write your thoughts down in a journal. Why? Because as this world get more digital, what's physical will slowly but surely disappear. There will be less things you can touch and feel, and more things that you can see and not touch. You can post all the digital pics you want on social media...nothing is assured and those pics and those platforms could be gone in an instant. An album on streaming platforms will never be the same as the original album in your hand with the liner notes, as versions of that album can get removed, and/or replaced with re-recorded material (since the artist doesn't own their masters). Books go out of print. And staring at a jpeg (no matter how much you paid for it *cough cough* NFTs) of an artwork will never be the same as owning the actual artwork or a print of it.

Preserve these things. If not for yourself, then for future generations.

Ok academic tumblr, I need some good reading materials on why “thought crime” isn’t real and why consuming problematic media does not make you a bad person, preferably suitable for someone with religious trauma. I’ve done a little digging and not yet encountered anything that really fits what I’m looking for (aside from predictably, tumblr posts because we have this discussion so often in the fandom sides of tumblr). Preferably without paywalls please, neither I nor my friend can afford them.
