Epically Earnest - Molly Horan
"In this delightfully romantic LGBTQ+ comedy-of-errors inspired by Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest, a high school senior works up the courage to ask her long-time crush to prom all while deciding if she should look for her bio family.
Jane Grady’s claim to fame is that she was one first viral internet sensations, dubbed #bagbaby—discovered as a one-year-old in an oversized Gucci bag by her adopted father in a Poughkeepsie train station. Now in her senior year of high school, Jane is questioning whether she wants to look for her bio family due to a loving, but deeply misguided push from her best friend Algie, while also navigating an all-consuming crush on his cousin, the beautiful, way-out-of-her-league Gwen Fairfax.
And while Janey’s never thought of herself as the earnest type, she needs to be honest with her parents, Algie, Gwen, but mostly herself if she wants to make her life truly epic. With a wink toward Oscar Wilde’s beloved play, Epically Earnest explores the complexity of identity, the many forms family can take, and the importance of being . . . yourself."
Read Date - July 2024
Length - 195 pages
Genre - Romance, LGBTQ+, Contemporary
Rating - 6/10
Stars - ★★★☆☆
Notes - This is a retelling of a play by Oliver Wilde called “the importance of being earnest” and though i haven’t seen it, i can clearly see the inspirations from what i’ve read. I like how everything starts out with the main character Jane and her friend Algie trying to find her birth parents, and THEN it leads into the back story. it’s so different from other books i’ve read, and i love it. I think the plot line of her being a “famous” baby because it gives more dynamic to her story. The living obit parts are really cute as well, and i like how they have multiple in the book for different people. I also like the text messages being included. it really zazzes the book up and makes it feel more unique. For me, the pining in the relationship is cute and isn’t overplayed. It’s not a slow burn and it doesnt play out like one. I like the way that Jane and Gwen have two very different lifestyles and come from different backgrounds. i think the relationships between both Jane and Gwen, and Cecil and Algie are REALLY cute. Like, so slice of life and adorable and sugary sweet that you just have to keep reading to see it all play out. It’s so amazing to me. The parts with reconnecting with her biological family is so interesting to me because it starts out as written as a side plot line, and it’s cool to see the relationship aspect play out with the drama stewing in the background before it slowly becomes apart of the main plot. The prom scenes are adorable, and i think this is a very good retelling

The Luckiest Girl in the World (chapter 18)
Summary: Molly gifts Rosie something the teen never thought she'd get her hands on.
Eighteen Years Old
Molly got me concert tickets to Niall Horan on my eighteenth birthday. I was over the moon. Since I was ten, I’d considered myself a Directioner, and the year I turned thirteen, I had my first celebrity crush. Harry Styles, one of the One Direction members, was destined to be my boyfriend someday in the future, no questions asked.
I got over it. Eventually. When Molly accompanied me to one of their last concerts before they split up, it was more important to sing along and enjoy the music than to pine for the darkhaired young Brit.
Niall, who was a previous member of One Direction, had sold out all his concerts in the UK, and I and my two friends, Leyla and Clare, had tried but failed to get tickets. And now, I suddenly had three of them in my hands.
“Molly! I don’t know how to thank you enough,” I exclaimed and hugged her hard and long. “How did you…”
“Shush now. I have my…sources,” Molly said and winked at me. “Give the girls a call and tell them the good news.”
***
Papa tried to insist that one of uncle Myc’s chauffeurs could drive us to the O2, where the concert was to be held, but Dad and I managed to make him see sense.
“I ride the tube almost every day, Papa. The Jubilee Line will take us straight to North Greenwich station, and then we’re practically there. We can’t always make use of uncle’s privileges, you know. It would be embarrassing and attract too much attention as well if three ordinary girls turned up in a…”
“Nothing ordinary about…” Papa interrupted me, while Dad interrupted Papa with a stern voice calling his name, and that was the end of it.
***
Molly had procured us with great Inner Circle tickets and early entry. It must’ve cost her a fortune, and I kept wondering who this source of hers was. (Not that I didn’t have my suspicions.)
With money my grandparents had gifted me, I bought merch. A t-shirt, a few bracelets and a key lanyard.
The concert was brilliant, and luckily, we were already on our way out of the venue when a group of girls started to fight amongst each other over a signed poster of Niall. It got ugly quite quickly. A nail file was put to good use, blood flooded, and hysterical teenagers were running to the tube station.
My phone vibrated in the back pocket of my jeans. A text.
Walk to the parking lot by the Aurora Tower. I will have a car waiting for the three of you. UM.
Clare had started to get a bit freaked out by the crowd pushing on us, and she sighed relieved when I told her and Leyla that we should walk in the opposite direction to be picked up by my uncle, Anthea or just a driver.
“Your uncle is just brilliant, Ro,” Leyla stated. “How did he know? This just happened minutes ago. I’m sure it hasn’t reached the news yet.”
“Not the ordinary news,” I agreed without elaborating further.
When I spotted the car, another text arrived.
Ferguson will be driving you. He already knows Ms. Aldershot and Ms. Carson’s addresses. I hope you had a good time. UM.
Thanks, uncle Myc. You’re a star! Or brilliant as L & C called you. Pick a choice. xx

BEHIND THE CAMPAIGN: LOUIS TOMLINSON
MUSICALLY | 19 Apr 2023
3. The radio conundrum
We have seen historically that it has been tricky to get radio for him – but not because of any artist proposition issue. It’s just sonically that he wants to do something different to what radio wants to play.
It’s tricky because it falls through the gaps a little bit with what he wants to do. We’ve always looked at it as: let’s just assume there are zero promo opportunities at radio, TV and press. Let’s just take out promo entirely.
What you have got is a global, engaged, fanatical fanbase. You can do more with that than you can with those other things if you don’t have fans.
I would much rather have an artist who’s got an absolutely berserk global fanbase and that gets absolutely no support from traditional media – because you can work with that – than have an artist that’s not really got a particularly big fanbase but radio loves them and TV loves them. What does that matter if you’ve not got the fans?
We did always want to get promo because we would love to be able to expand Louis’ fanbase. But you’ve got to compete against Harry [Styles] and Niall [Horan]. They’re the first people you’ve got to compete against because, to play three One Direction members on the radio, I don’t know if radio stations would. Then you’ve got the sonic battle as well where he wants to keep it pretty raw.
The first single was ‘Bigger Than Me’, which is a big song to sing. It was a good bridge between the last album and this album. It gave the fans what they wanted.
youtube
We had really good feedback from radio. They played it to Clara [Amfo, Radio 1] without telling her who it was. She loved it and she did actually play it as one of the hottest tracks of the week. Greg James’s producers said it was brilliant. They absolutely adored it. Matt Edmondson and Mollie King’s team loved it. They thought it was great. But it got blocked at playlist conversations. It was like, Come on!
That was really disappointing because, pre-release, we were getting incredible feedback from producers, but we just couldn’t get it through the playlisting. We’d always planned for it not to go on radio, but if it got on radio that’d be just a brilliant bonus. So it didn’t harm our campaign strategy at all.
He’s too pop for indie stations and he’s too indie for the BBC [Radio 1]. It’s frustrating, but he’s making the music he wants to make and the fans love it. So what do you do?
‘Silver Tongues’ came out just before the album dropped, which was the official second single. That bridged the gap between those two singles. It was much more guitar based. It was up-tempo but it wasn’t too indie.
On the day that the album was released, fans bombarded Greg’s show on the 10 Minute Takeover [on the Radio 1 breakfast show]. And he played it! It was lovely but you could tell it was done like, “OK, I’ve done it now. Go away.” Which is just so sad because his demographic is right in that lane. It’s 18-25.

Berger saves the shoot-out’s final penalty to send Chelsea through to the Champions League semi-finals.
‘The celebration came out of nowhere – why the hell did I do that?’
Ann-Katrin Berger and Jess Carter, the Chelsea team-mates and partners, talk to Molly Hudson about their dramatic win over Lyon and the test that awaits them against Barcelona
Something strange happened to Ann-Katrin Berger in the seconds after she dived to her right and forced Lindsey Horan’s penalty away from goal to seal Chelsea’s progression to the semi-finals of the Champions League.
“It was weird. I didn’t know how to celebrate,” Berger, who had also saved Wendie Renard’s penalty, says. She ran out from her goal, shimmied her shoulders and then did a knee slide in front of the jubilant Chelsea fans, before being engulfed by her team-mates.
“My brain just switched off,” she adds, covering her face in embarrassment as she relived her celebration. “I have no idea why that came out of me, it just happened and afterwards I was like, ‘What the hell did I just do?’ The girls were laughing about it.”
While Berger’s penalty heroics may have come as a surprise to some, it did not to her Chelsea team-mates. The 32-year-old is a specialist at spot kicks. “I’m sure she’s already told you, she loves penalties, it’s where she likes to shine,” says Jess Carter, her Chelsea team-mate and partner.
Chelsea were seconds from elimination against the holders Lyon, before Maren Mjelde’s 128th-minute penalty kick took the tie to a shoot-out. While Emma Hayes, the Chelsea manager, couldn’t bear to watch, Berger was ready for her moment in the spotlight.
“It’s my job to be calm,” Berger says. “If you have a clown in the back [of defence], that probably won’t help the team. I didn’t prepare. I was confident enough in my team that they would score their penalties, especially after Maren took the penalty. I already knew it was going in because I know her abilities.
“I don’t have the pressure. I love penalty shoot-outs because as a goalkeeper you never have pressure on it, because everyone expects people to score from 12 yards out. That’s why I think I was as calm as I was because there was no pressure at all. They [gestures to Carter] had more pressure.”

Carter showed her cool to score the fifth penalty in the shoot-out.
Against Lyon, Berger and Carter — who blasted the fifth spot kick into the top corner — looked unflappable, but that was no act, as the couple are as laid-back away from the pitch as they are on it.
They have enjoyed most of their careers away from the spotlight, meeting during their time at Birmingham City in May 2016. By February 2017 they had moved in together as friends, before later realising they had developed romantic feelings.
In June 2018, Carter moved to London to play for Chelsea. Berger joined the club in early 2019, and the pair live together in London. Now they are adapting to the increased attention after the Lionesses’ European Championship victory last summer took women’s football to new heights.

Carter, No 3, was part of the England squad who won the European Championship last summer.
That day, the couple were in opposing dugouts as unused substitutes for their respective nations, but the impact of England’s victory on club football continues. The pair have just finished an event with the Chelsea FC Foundation where they surprised local schoolgirls and gave them tickets to tomorrow’s Champions League semi-final against Barcelona.
Both are genuinely touched by the reactions of the girls, who squealed in disbelief before looking up at their heroes with starstruck faces. It is a reaction neither is particularly used to.
“I was really surprised they even recognised me, I’m not going to lie,” says Berger, while Carter says that their reaction made her day. It was a moment of joy in a high-pressure week that culminates with the biggest game of Chelsea’s season so far.
The mere mention of Barcelona is enough to remind most fans of an evening in May 2021 that began as a dream for Hayes and Chelsea, but quickly turned into a nightmare. Berger and Carter both started that Champions League final, in which they conceded an own goal after 33 seconds, and three more goals in the opening 36 minutes. Barcelona went on to win 4-0.
Tumblr media
Barcelona claimed the Champions League trophy in 2021 after thrashing Chelsea 4-0 in the final.
“I don’t think about it any more,” Berger says. “I can’t change it. We learn from our mistakes, hopefully, we have analysed it over the two years. They’ve changed, we’ve changed. It will be a completely different game. That’s why there’s no time to think about it. It happened and it made us stronger as well.”
Tomorrow’s game, in front of more than 25,000 fans, will be the true test of a squad that Hayes describes as “mentality monsters”. Barcelona are widely considered the favourites to win this competition and have a flawless domestic record, winning all 25 of their games so far, scoring 105 goals and conceding only five.
This is the only trophy missing in Hayes’s collection, but Carter believes their mental strength will help them to live up to the occasion.
“It’s something that obviously Emma has spoken about,” she says. “That mentality, some people are just given it, you’re born with it and some people have got to work hard to get that. To me, having a strong mentality in football is what’s going to get you to the top and you’re going to have so many setbacks. We’re trying to figure out how you can overcome those setbacks and turn them into positives.”
