#OTD in 1868 – Michael Barrett from Kesh, Co Fermanagh is executed for his part in the explosion at Clerkenwell Gaol.
The last man to be publicly hanged in England, Irishman Michael Barrett was executed for his part in the 1867 bombing of Clerkenwell Prison, an attack carried out by The Fenians as they tried to help a prisoner escape. The bombing — which killed 12 bystanders, seriously injured dozens more and destroyed a row of tenement buildings opposite the jail — sparked British hostility against the Irish…

Glazers Plan to Buy FC United of Manchester
Tumblr media
Following their decision to sell their controlling stake in Manchester United soccer club, American owners Avram and Joel Glazer are said to be considering to now purchase neighbouring team FC United of Manchester.
The club, based in the suburb of Moston who play in the English seventh-tier, was founded in 2005 by locals dissatisfied with the new ownership of teams in the area. More to follow as the story develops.

Hi Pia! I was wondering if you’d ever thought about/ planned maybe making side stories for the vench and the various relationships we can see while Augus and Gwyn are with them? Like how Temsen is with all the Ohlo Ohlo, and Enris with Bracken and Wirth? Or just little excerpts for random daily interactions?
Hi anon!
I never planned to write any side stories re: the vench, tbh. I sometimes thought about writing a Temsen/Gwyn AU, but the fact that I'm on like a writing hiatus right now for feeling overwhelmed, and cutting down my schedule when I come back so it's more manageable, the thought of adding more stories onto my plate makes me want to scream a little salkfjsda
I'm totally into other people writing fics of this though! Like, it'd be great to see what people would imagine and what they'd enjoy seeing in that way :D

Some albums that get released after a very long time surprise us thanks to their contexts. For instance, The Next Day by David Bowie was a huge shock, since many assumed he retired. Still, we must admit the LP could be braver, though one needs to understand Bowie merely wished to see back then – this is my personal theory –, if he still commands our attention. Thus, the disc finds him doing his greatest hits in the version of a platter of an original material, which seemed like an appropriate thing to do for someone of his stature. For instance, the tune on the link reminds us of his previous tributes to Scott Walker, yet this one seemed different thanks to him pointing there towards his final destination in the form of a disc.

Jamie Tartt Accent Analysis
Um so yeah, after an anon ask to @withbadhair talking about how Phil is posh and Jamie is Manc, I relistened to Phil Dunster's episode on No Such Thing As A Fish again today and got sucked back into how much I love thinking about the intricacies of regional accents and how much I love thinking about Phil's accent work and how it is great!
So here you go -
A Yorkshire Lass' with an obsession with regional UK accents' take on Jamie Tartt's accent
Phil's Intentions with the accent
Phil has said that it was really his choice what sort of Manchester accent they went for (as Jamie wasn't written specifically to be Mancunian) but he was aiming for New Moston sort of area which is north eastern Manchester suburb (see yellow highlighted area on the image)
Tumblr media
But he started by mimicking his agent who is apparently sassy and from Manchester but then listened to people like Aitch (who is from Moston which is probably where the idea for Jamie being from Moston/New Moston came from), Marcus Rashford (who is from Wythenshawe which is south Manchester out of the Outer Ring Road), Jesse Lingard (who is from Warrington which is a town between Manchester and Liverpool to the west) the Gallaghers (who are from Burnage which is south eastern - near Highfield Country Park on the map) which was more season 1 Jamie.
It was mentioned that Aitch was a bit inspiration with the attitude and the sort of swagger as well as the accent itself.
Features of a Mancunian Accent (some things to listen out for)
Research says that the Manchester accent can be characterised by a few distinct features:
The LettER vowel: if there is an ER at the end of a word it is pronounced more like UH. So for example "letter" becomes "let-uh"
The HappY vowel: what Jamie is known for. If there is a Y at the end of a word it is pronounced more like EH. For example "poopy" being "poopeh" or "city" being "cit-eh
H-dropping: this is typically northern but prevalent in Manchester. It is not pronouncing the H at the start of a word so instead of saying "head" pronouncing it "ed".
T-glotallisation: if there is a T in the middle of a word it is sort of dragged over. Like in "better" it can be "beh-uh".
-NG: typically if a word ends in -NG you do not say the G. For example "waiting" is "waitin"
All of these features are more easily noticed in words where more than one of them happens like "happy" becomes "appeh" with both H-dropping and the Y at the end
Analysis of Jamie Tartt's accent from a professional (not me)
Manchester Met have done a study of the different dialects within Greater Manchester and have split it into four categories. Lancashire, Mancs, Wigan, Posh. If Phil was aiming for Moston that would be more Manc but some Lancashire.
Dr Rob Drummond who was the lead on this research was sent clips of Jamie Tartt (edit - as a few people commented on this but he is a friend of No Such Thing As A Fish so was sent it in preparation for Phil being on the podcast but was apparently very complimentary so definitely a Phil Dunster win!) and managed to locate very precisely to just north of central Manchester in the Smedley sort of area which is the blue area on the map. If you compare that with Phil's aim of the red area ... that's damn impressive
Tumblr media
So if you are looking for areas of Manchester to set your fics around or ways to make your dialogue feel more Tartt. Then we are looking for the Mancs accent and living somewhere in just north/north west of central Manchester based on his accent.
So yeah thanks for reading my thesis. I was going to go into words and sayings here too but it's after midnight and I have been talking to myself for the last hour just repeating the same words in Queens English, Leeds, and Manc 😂
Disclaimer - this is more based on S3 Jamie as S1 Jamie had a lot more subdued characteristics as Phil was finding his feet with the accent.
Side Plug as I have preordered it - Dr Rob Drummond's book called You're All Talk is coming out soon and it is all about this stuff and also social perceptions of linguistic diversity (which as someone who's accent massively chances based on the situation I am in I am super interested in)

Most Coregean-speaking historians when referring to the elder son of Odren VII use the Coregean form of his name, Josiah. Coregean schoolchildren learn of him by that name, historical drama films (yes, those are a thing in present-day Corege!) featuring him use that name, even the plaque at Hollingham College commemorating his time at the school refers to him that way.
When in fact, relatively few people in his lifetime called him Josiah. His Coregean schoolmates, friends, and family, yes. But the people closest to him--his parents, his siblings, his wife, his Liennese friends--all called him Josia, his Liennese name. He clearly thought of himself as Josia and signed himself that way most often. His signatures in letters written in Coregean notably exhibit evidence of a slight hesitation before adding the h to the end of his name, as if he had to think about it.
Even decades after his death, he's being remembered and characterized as an identity that was a role he took on rather than who he was personally. So it was particularly groundbreaking for Coregean historian J. M. Moston to exclusively refer to him as Josia in the definitive biography Josia I: A Life (2019), which has revolutionized the tone of scholarship on this historical figure. (I had to return this one before I could finish it, but what I did read was riveting.)
Nonetheless, which name to use for him (do we prioritize familiarity and readability? or strict authenticity?) remains a difficult choice for writers.

Ghost Train Orchestra & Kronos Quartet - Songs and Symphoniques: The Music of Moondog
On "Songs and Symphoniques: The Music of Moondog," Ghost Train Orchestra teams up with the trailblazing Kronos Quartet to celebrate and reimagine the music of Louis Hardin, aka Moondog, the ground-breaking composer and poet who lived on the streets of New York City in the 50s and 60s, and influenced the minimalists Philip Glass, Steve Reich and Terry Riley. A blind composer who moved from Kansas to New York City and built his own instruments and mythology, Moondog's story and music continue to be an inspiration to many. Along with guests Sam Amidon, Jarvis Cocker, Petra Haden, Karen Mantler, Marissa Nadler, Aoife O'Donovan, Rufus Wainwright and Joan Wasser, the two groups explore Moondog's sense of whimsy, wonder and adventure through a cross-section of songs and instrumentals for large ensemble, string ensemble, percussion and voice. The vinyl and CD packages include an essay by biographer Robert Scotto, Moondog's song lyrics, extensive in-studio photographs by Dan Efram, and an interview with Kronos Quartet founder David Harrington and Ghost Train Orchestra founder Brian Carpenter, mediated by music historian Irwin Chusid. Kronos Quartet David Harrington - violin John Sherba - violin Hank Dutt - viola Sunny Yang - cello Ghost Train Orchestra Brian Carpenter, trumpet, harmonica, vocals Andy Laster, alto saxophone, flute Dennis Lichtman, clarinet Matt Bauder, bass clarinet, tenor, baritone saxophones Sara Schoenbeck, bassoon Curtis Hasselbring, trombone, guitar Ron Caswell, tuba Brandon Seabrook, guitar Chris Lightcap, bass Rob Garcia, drums David Cossin, marimba, percussion Maxim Moston, violin Colin Stetson, bass saxophone Guests: Sam Amidon, Jarvis Cocker, Petra Haden, Karen Mantler, Marissa Nadler, Aoife O'Donovan, Rufus Wainwright, and Joan Wasser All new arrangements by Ghost Train Orchestra Dedicated to the memory of Hal Willner

The Horrific Murder of Suzanne Capper
Capper, described as "a gentle and easily influenced girl," had been babysat by Jean Powell since she was ten years old. Capper began to truant from Moston Brook High School, and her attendance during the final two years of schooling was described as "erratic." Capper increasingly spent her time at Powell's house. Powell lived at 97 Langworthy Road, Moston, a small Victorian terraced house, where she also dealt drugs and was involved with the handling of stolen motor vehicles. Michelle Capper (Suzanne’s older sister) had briefly lived with Powell, but moved out in August 1992 because she did not like the "evil new friends" Powell was associating with, particularly Bernadette McNeilly, who had recently moved in three doors away at number 91. McNeilly, who had three children, subsequently moved in with Powell and her three children, where the two shared a bed in the downstairs dining room because the bedrooms were "full of children." Capper continued to stay regularly even though Powell and McNeilly frequently bullied her. Her sister said: "It was not that she was scared of them, it's just that she would do anything for them. She pampered their every whim."  Powell was separated from her husband Glyn, although the two remained friendly and he would visit regularly from his nearby home. McNeilly's boyfriend was 16-year-old Anthony Dudson, who was also having sexual intercourse with Powell. Powell was sexually involved with Jeffrey Leigh, a regular visitor to the house as a purchaser of amphetamines. Another frequent visitor to the house was Powell's younger brother, Clifford Pook.
On 7 December 1992, Capper was lured to Jean Powell's home, where Glyn Powell and Dudson were already waiting. She was grabbed as soon as she arrived and held down while Glyn Powell shaved her head and her eyebrows and then made her clean up the hair and place it in a bin. Then he placed a plastic bag over her head and walked around her while hitting her on the head. She was then kicked by Jean Powell and McNeilly as she lay curled up on the floor and both women took turns beating her with a three-foot-long (1 m) wooden instrument and a belt. She was then taken to the bathroom and forced to shave off her own pubic hair. Afterwards Jean Powell locked her in a cupboard overnight. The following morning Capper was taken upstairs and locked in another cupboard. On 8 December she was transferred to McNeilly's house because of concern that Powell and McNeilly's six children were disturbed by Capper's crying. There she was tied spreadeagled to an upturned bed with electrical flex in a downstairs back room.
Over the next five days Capper was subjected to a series of violent acts, "increasing in severity and brutality as the time passed." She was regularly beaten and injected with amphetamines, burned with cigarettes, and had rave music—in particular "Hi, I'm Chucky (Wanna Play?)" by 150 Volts —played at maximum volume through headphones. McNeilly would commence each torture session with the phrase "Chucky's coming to play." At some point during the week, Pook and Leigh called at the house and saw Capper, blindfolded and gagged, tied to the bed. By this time, Capper had been lying in her own urine and feces for several days and was placed in a bath containing concentrated disinfectant and scrubbed with a stiff brush with sufficient force to remove skin.  Pook then used pliers to extract two of her teeth, which police later found at his house "like some kind of macabre trophy." Dudson said: "I was stood at the doorway with Jeanie [Powell] and Bernie [McNeilly]. Cliff [Pook] took her gag off. He told her to open her mouth. He said: 'Right, I'm going to rip your teeth out'. He started hitting her teeth with the pliers. He got the pliers on and started pulling it out. But it just snapped and chipped. Then he hit them a few more times. He put the pliers on again and really, really pulled. He pulled Suzanne's head forward until there was a snap and he had the tooth in the pliers. He did the same again and he was laughing."
David Hill, 18, was asked to "sit in" at the house, and while there heard Dudson shouting in the back room. When he asked what was going on, Leigh had shown him Capper. Hill could clearly see evidence of torture and was later left alone with Capper, but did not free her. He said: "She asked me if I could help, but I told her I couldn't. I asked her who she was. She said her name was Suzanne. She asked me if I could untie her. I said I couldn't do anything." Hill later claimed that he was too afraid of Leigh to intervene, saying: "I thought they would batter me. If I'd said [anything] they'd all have got me, wouldn't they? I didn't know what to do. I was too shocked to do anything." Leigh and Dudson also helped Capper's sister's fiancé, Paul Barlow, repair his car while knowing she was being held and tortured in the house. Barlow said: "They could have told me there and then. The door would have been kicked down and I would have got Suzanne out. I did not think they were capable of such savagery. Now all I want is ten minutes with them in a back room."
The six primary attackers heard that Capper's family was going to report her as a missing person, and so agreed that Capper had to be removed from the house. In the early hours of 14 December 1992, Capper was forced into the boot of a stolen white Fiat Panda car and driven 15 miles (25 km) to a narrow lane at Werneth Low, near Romiley, on the outskirts of Stockport. In the car were McNeilly, the Powells and Dudson. McNeilly "giggled" as they made the journey. Powell later said that Capper was pushed down an embankment, into a patch of brambles, where McNeilly poured petrol over her. When McNeilly had difficulty getting the petrol to ignite, Glyn Powell and Dudson made multiple attempts before lighting the girl's body on fire. McNeilly began to sing "Burn baby burn! Burn baby burn!" from The Trammps song "Disco Inferno." Believing Capper to be dead, the four returned to Jean Powell's house, stopping to buy canned drinks on the way.
After her attackers left, Capper managed to scramble back up the embankment and stagger along the lane for approximately a quarter of a mile (400 metres) to Compstall Road, despite extensive burns. She was found at 06:10 by Barry Sutcliffe and two of his colleagues on their way to work. They immediately took her to a nearby house and roused the residents, Michael and Margaret Coop, to call for an ambulance.  Michael Coop said: "Both her hands appeared like ash. Her legs were just like raw meat and her feet appeared to be badly charred. I was struck by how polite the victim was. She was constantly thanking my wife for her assistance." Margaret Coop said: "I instinctively went to put my arms around her but she pulled away because she could not bear to be touched. Her head was shaved and there were recent, not new, cuts to her head. Her face was almost featureless. Her hands were red raw and black at the fingertips. Her legs were red from top to bottom. She couldn't bear anything near her legs." Capper drank six glasses of water, but was unable to hold the glass herself because of the injuries to her hands. Capper was rushed to the hospital and was able to give the names of her six assailants, as well as Powell's address, before falling into a coma. The extent of her burns was such that her mother and stepfather were unable to recognize her, and she was positively identified by a partial fingerprint from her thumb, the only part of her hands not severely burned. She died on 18 December 1992, without regaining consciousness.
