Gather, comrades. We need to talk about boning. Actually, we don’t; a lot of other people are already deep in discussion on this topic, but if we don’t there could be a lot less sexuality in film and television and, frankly, that’s unfortunate.

First, let’s take it back to Penn Badgley. Earlier this week, comments the actor made about no longer wanting to do sex scenes on his Netflix show You took over the internet. On the surface, Badgley’s request was reasonable enough. Every actor should be able to decide what they do and don’t want to do in a role. But what he said also reignited a long-festering online debate about the necessity of nudity and sex scenes in movies and TV—and the comfort of those who watch them. “Think about every male lead you’ve loved. Are they kissing someone? Are they doing a lot more than that?” Badgley said on the podcast Podcrushed. “It’s really not my desire to.” 

This would likely not fly on House of the Dragon. But at the same time, Dragon’s copious sex scenes still don’t seem as intense as those on Game of Thrones, which Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen) later described as terrifying to film. There has been a movement in recent years, post-Me Too, for every set to have “intimacy coordinators”—people whose job it is to make sure everyone is comfortable with what’s being filmed and how it’s being acted out. The presence of these coordinators has made productions safer places to film sex scenes (House of the Dragon has one), but at the same time the prevalence of these scenes has led to discussions about whether such sex scenes are necessary. 

The short answer is: They are. Sometimes. The long answer is that they have a history so fraught, it would take 10 more columns (at least) to get into all of them. But the short (please understand these are very broad strokes) version is that at one time, starting in the 1930s and stretching into the ’60s, Hollywood—in an attempt to rehabilitate its image and be permitted to show its wares all over the US—censored itself. The Hays Code, named after Will Hays, the former postmaster general who developed it, listed 36 “Don’ts and Be Carefuls”—guidelines that, while they extended beyond sex and sexuality, had a stifling effect on what intimacy filmmakers could put on screen. No nudity, no “perversion” (generally understood to mean no queer stuff), no “first-night” scenes (you know, like in Romeo and Juliet). The idea was that if movie productions followed these rules, the government wouldn’t get involved.    

As adherence to the Hays Code dissolved, largely because the film industry was facing stiff competition from the emergent medium of television, the Motion Picture Association of America began instituting the kind of ratings systems we know today, and more explicit content found its way into mainstream movies. While this gave filmmakers more leeway to show honest depictions of sex and sexuality, it also led to questionable situations for actors, who found themselves in potentially compromising situations (see: Last Tango in Paris).

By the time the ’90s came around, so had the idea of the erotic thriller: Body of Evidence, Basic Instinct, Disclosure. Without making a qualitative judgment on these films (OK, many are bad, but some are also bad in a fun way; watch artist Leo Herrera’s series on the subgenre on Instagram to learn more), many of them reinforced the idea that sex in movies was mostly about titillation. Butts on screen will get butts into seats. It might make you uncomfortable if it comes on while you’re watching with your parents, but you’re still definitely going to rent it at the video store. 

It is this kind of sex scene, if not this kind of movie, that seems to be the focus of the current debate. The people who are voicing upset at nudity and sexuality in movies and TV now seem to be doing it under the presumption that it’s gratuitous. Anyone can dislike any kind of scene, of course, but saying sex scenes have little to no place onscreen gets dangerously close to saying sex is not a necessary part of the human experience, and that’s just not true. 

To that end, it’s not that nudity and sex scenes should be censored or considered unnecessary, it’s that they need to be thoughtful and intentional—to tell stories of intimacy, heartbreak, healing, joy. They would do well to be collaborations between filmmakers and actors (with intimacy coordinators!) that show how sex intersects with the emotional and physical lives of actual people. They have the power to, in queer cinema especially, be images of representation and rebellion. They can even demonstrate thoughtful moments of people deciding not to have sex. Most already do these things, and focusing the discussion around those scenes on the comfort levels of every viewer misses the point. Film and TV need more authentic representations of sexuality, not less. Look no further than The Last of Us for proof. 

For whatever reason, this recent debate reminded me of a Saturday Night Live bit from 2021: “Lesbian Period Drama.” The joke was that too often films in the genre follow a similar playbook of slow-mounting tension that builds up to “a sex scene so graphic, you’ll think, ‘Oh right, a man directed this.’” It was a keen observation. There have been several lesbian romance films in recent years—period dramas or otherwise—that have fallen into these traps (think: Ammonite, Disobedience). But many of these films, particularly the ones not directed by men, like Céline Sciamma’s Portrait of a Lady on Fire, were deepened by the intimacy onscreen. This intimacy may be uncomfortable for some viewers, but it’s liberating for others. And it should be.

Why I Won’t Be Watching ‘Blonde’

...and if you care about Marilyn Monroe, you won’t either.

Let’s talk about the rape scene and the NC-17 rating. Director Andrew Dominik states, “It’s an NC-17 movie about Marilyn Monroe, it’s kind of what you want, right? I want to go and see the NC-17 version of the Marilyn Monroe story.”

What is an NC-17 rating? It is “the highest rating in Motion Picture Association film rating system assigned to films with content the MPA finds to be only suitable for ages 18 and older.” This rating is mainly reserved for incredibly explicit and graphic content. It was confirmed that there will be an explicit rape in the film. Although Monroe was sexually assaulted as a child, she was not in her adult years—there is no documentation or words from Marilyn herself.

Dominik even had to negotiate with Netflix how far the scene could go. He admits that the film is controversial, but says if the audience doesn’t like it, that’s their “fucking problem.”

Wanting to see an “NC-17 version” of Monroe’s life implies a threatening viewpoint, as if rape is entertaining. But as Dominik says himself, that’s the audience’s problem.

In an interview with Screen Daily Andrew Dominik said the film “wouldn’t have got done” without the MeToo movement. This is obviously ironic considering the rape scene—a rape that never actually happened in Monroe’s adult years.

The real issue with this rape scene is that Marilyn isn’t even able to give her consent. It’s violating, tasteless, and disrespectful. I don’t care that it’s from a fictional novel. The novel is based off a real human being, not an object.

Dominik doesn’t seem to care about the audience, and thinks the film is “one of the 10 best movies ever made.” This is sending signals that he only cares about the awards and attention.

Brad Pitt’s production company “Plan B” will be producing it. If you are not already aware, Pitt turned a blind eye to Harvey Weinstein’s crimes despite his previous partner, Angelina Jolie, being sexually harassed by him. However, you can try to separate the art from the artist.

There seems to be some involvement with JFK in the film and his poor treatment of Monroe. However, she was not mistreated by him, nor did she have sexual relations with him. (Monroe and JFK met on four occasions, three of them public events. The only time they supposedly slept together was on 24 March 1962, when they both stayed at Bing Crosby’s home in Palm Springs.)

If a filmmaker actually cared about Monroe’s legacy, they wouldn’t base their film off a fictional novel, period. To end, Andrew Dominik added about the film: “There’s something in it to offend everyone.”

Justice for Queer Individuals in the Entertainment Industry: Behind the Glamour

It may often appear, that the entertainment industry, with all its glitz, glamour and bourgeoisie ideologies, is a beacon of acceptance and progressiveness. The short contradiction to that would be, “Don’t judge a book by its cover”. The long contradiction will be discussed in this essay that attempts to highlight the grave injustice meted out by various individuals, who take advantage of the hierarchies present in this industry, to members of minorities, specifically the queer community, who need just as much space, representation and respect in all forums as white cis-gendered heterosexual people do. Beneath the facade of the pretty people with all the money in the world, in a near dystopian illusion (referencing the Capitol from The Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins, 2008), is the harsh reality of controlling charlatans who, through the means of contracts, lies and multiple inhuman methods, wield authority over the “idols” of today, owing to their avarice and desire to constantly gain, bearing no thought or sympathy to the people we see and falsely believe to be the luckiest in the world. Scratching just the shell of the history, the truth behind this surprisingly shallow image of glitter and allure is frankly terrifying and continues to shock all who research through the hidden depth of this industry, that such backward mindsets could be possible in spaces that are often seen as TOO liberal at times. In this essay, I will attempt to delve into the challenges faced by the people trapped in this industry and advocate for justice and reform to ensure they receive access to basic human rights and dignity.

A Brief History and the Struggle Against Power Dynamics in the Industry

A History of the Struggle for Justice for Queer Rights in the Industry. This struggle for LGBTQIA+ rights in the entertainment industry is not a recent phenomenon. This relatively new field has seen activists rising in rebellion ever since the introduction of the Hollywood Production Code (also known as the Hays Code) in 1930. This set of industry censorship guidelines, enforced by the Motion Picture Production Code, aimed to regulate the content of films to ensure they were ‘morally wholesome’ and acceptable to a broader audience. Homosexuality was explicitly prohibited and any portrayal would have led to censorship and blacklisting, forcing queer characters and stories underground, relegating them to subtext or coded language. If queer characters did appear, they were often depicted in a stereotypical and/or derogatory manner, portraying them as villains, sexual predators or as objects of ridicule. The silencing and erasure of queer voices and experiences from the most observed and followed enterprise reinforced societal stigma and discrimination against queer individuals, hindering significant progress towards acceptance and equality. Despite, or perhaps because of, its restrictive nature, the Hays Code spurred resistance within the industry which continues even today. Although the HPC has now been replaced by the film rating system, the continued struggle to represent the LGBTQIA+ community well and as fairly as heteronormativity, persists in trying to make the industry a safer place for queer-identifying artists.

Power Dynamics and Its Role in Injustice Towards Queer Artists. The entertainment industry is notorious for its power dynamics, where a few in power wield an immense influence over the careers of the professionals of today. Closeted queer individuals are often held at the mercy of their agents, managers and/or executives, a result of a glaring imbalance of power, who pressure them to preserve their ‘straight image’ to maintain their marketability (and hence keep their pockets full), especially male pop artists whose target audience generally consists of young teenage girls. Signed contracts are often the bane of these artists who could have anything from legal action taken against them to being blacklisted in a way that could lead to them being cut off from further roles, working with other individuals, or being able to continue in the industry in any setting, as a consequence for breaking even a clause on said contract. 

The entertainment industry is interconnected in a way that all the biggest powers work in a coalition and cooperation, so standing in defiance to one would mean defiance to all, which would not be brushed away easily. Agents or managers are the ones who provide opportunities within the entertainment industry, controlling access to roles, projects, and promotions, resulting in their authority over the works of musicians, actors and other professionals, forcing these artists to conform to heteronormative standards, leading to them concealing their sexuality and/ or gender identities to prevent putting their success at risk. A perceived commercial appeal takes the forefront as opposed to genuineness or authenticity. To further their interests, powers in the industry encourage and/ or coerce queer artists into maintaining a more mainstream image to attract fans. Discrimination is still an unfortunate reality, and facing backlash from others, industry insiders or the general public, resulting in career stagnation, is still a fear for many. Threats of reputational damage, career disruption or exposure are some of the forms of abusive manipulation used to force professionals in the industry to comply with the will and authority of those in power. 

The Mental Impact of Being Closeted in the Industry

There is no doubt that being forcibly closeted would result in profoundly negative effects on one’s mental health, as individuals grapple with the emotional toll of having to conceal their authentic selves in an unforgiving environment with literally everything that they have worked towards at stake. The pressure to maintain heteronormative standards is not an easy task, considering that one has to suppress one of the most integral parts of one’s identity. Naturally, anxiety and stress turn up in undercurrents as the artist navigates the delicate balance of authenticity and survival. Living in a constant fear of being exposed, ostracized or discriminated against will lead to the development of stress. Isolating oneself would also result from a fear of putting careers at risk from being too loud, which could exacerbate feelings of worthlessness and hopelessness which could, in turn, escalate into depression. For many closeted individuals, the act of having to conceal their sexuality or gender identity can create a profound sense of internal conflict, identity confusion and impostor syndrome. Questioning one’s worth, leading through a spiral of self-doubt and uncertainty about their identity or future is an unfortunately common happening. This internal turmoil could lead to them seeking solace in unhealthy coping mechanisms through self-harm (substance abuse or physically hurting oneself), providing a temporary escape or a means to exert control over one’s emotions or as a ‘punishment’ for their ‘shortcomings’ from the pain of having to hide and pretend to be someone that they are not. In some extreme cases, the psychological strain could even lead to suicidal ideation and behaviour. The feeling of being trapped and hopeless can become overwhelming, making suicide the only perceivably plausible method of escape.

Case Studies of Experiences of Queer Individuals in the Industry

Elton John

An example of someone who was forced to maintain an image of heteronormativity but then later came out and expressed his story of being a closeted gay man in the music industry due to societal pressures to conform is Sir Elton John. Throughout his early career, Elton John struggled with his sexual orientation, grappling with feelings of shame and self-doubt in a world that rejected and marginalized queer individuals. As part of his closeting, John was forced to marry Renate Blauel, amid widespread speculation about his sexuality. Blauel was his beard, the marriage, a façade, as John continued to explore his attraction to men behind closed doors. In 1976, in a now extremely famous Rolling Stones interview, Elton John publicly embraced his sexuality, then becoming a trailblazer for queer visibility and acceptance. Elton John has spoken on multiple occasions about the struggles of having to suppress his true self due to pressures from the industry and society at that time and thus continues to inspire generations of queer individuals to embrace their identities and stand proud of who they are.

In many cases, an individual’s queerness is made their entire personality, leading to their image being seen as nothing more than their sexuality or gender identity, relegating them into niches, resulting in them being viewed in a stereotypical light and pigeonholed into ‘being queer’ with no other facet to their character. Many fear their queerness being seen as a liability and then again, on the opposite end of the spectrum, fear being accused of ‘queerbaiting’, two evils, one no lesser than the other, one pressurizing queer artists to remain closeted, the other forcibly outing them, in most cases when they are not comfortable enough to expose their identity to the world. Kit Connor, a young, up-and-coming actor known for his roles in various film and television projects, was forced out by individuals who accused him of queerbaiting due to his major role in the series Heartstopper, a gay teen high school Netflix show, as a queer Year 11 student, despite his efforts to keep his personal life private, becoming the subject of rumours and speculations regarding his sexuality which intensified when confidential information about his private life was leaked to the media without his consent. Forcible outing perpetuates a culture of fear and discrimination, where individuals feel compelled to conceal their true selves to avoid reprisal, severely undermining efforts towards LGBTQIA+ visibility and acceptance, reinforcing stigmas and prejudice against many in the community that continue to face backlash. In response to his ordeal, Kit Connor has spoken out against this practice, advocating for greater respect for individuals’ autonomy, serving as a rallying cry for the call to a change within the entertainment industry, urging the insiders and the public alike to recognise and respect the rights of queer individuals to live authentically and on their terms without having to fear persecution.

Arguably the biggest boyband in the world, One Direction, had and continues to have its fair share of forced closeting. Louis Tomlinson and Harry Styles, two members of the group currently on hiatus, are widely accepted to have been in a relationship since 2011. From being saddled with a womanizing image to a fake pregnancy, the media portrayed images of the two men are far from being the truth. So, while Louis was imposed with the image of being in a long-term straight relationship, Harry was portrayed as a serial dater with a preference for older women. His first stunt was at the age of 17 when he ‘dated’ the then 32-year-old Caroline Flack, a relationship that was wrong on so many levels, a fact recognized by even those who did not believe in Harry’s closeting. Louis and Harry then took to expressing their love through complementary tattoos, obvious sarcasm and their lyrical prowess. Once the band went on their break, the two have never been seen together in public (discounting Styles’ presence at Tomlinson’s performance of his newly released single ‘Just Hold On’ on the X Factor in December 2016), and the portrayal of their relationship turned to ‘mortal enemies who mutually respect each other’ as opposed to the ‘bro dude-bro pal’ image that was being sold in One Direction. Besides the obvious stunting in terms of dating, Louis also ‘had a son’, another popular method by the industry to annul the possibility of questions concerning an artist’s sexuality arising. Odd coincidences that don’t seem to add up to the story of ‘his’ child have never been explained, leading one to naturally conclude that Louis is not a father, unlike the media’s propagation of the subject. Harry, in a surprisingly candid manner, once opened up in a Rolling Stones interview (circa August 2022), saying, “Sometimes people say, ‘You’ve only publicly been with women,’ and I don’t think I’ve publicly been with anyone.”                       

Speaking about lyrics, both artists have been rather explicitly pointing to each other through their songs in their current solo released albums. For example, in his 2020 debut album, ‘Walls’, Tomlinson sings “Come so far from Princess Park”, on the 7th track, ‘Habit’, which is in direct reference to the area where Styles and he first moved in together. Styles sings “I remember back at Jonny’s place”, a reference to Tomlinson’s good friend who became a mutual one through the years of their relationship, in his 2022 album, ‘Harry’s House’s’ 13th track ‘Love of My Life’. Louis, who is on his second world tour, consistently sings “I love HIM” during his song ‘Back To You’, despite the original lyric being “I love IT”.

Multiple incidents, that would make a thesis by itself, occur and have occurred in a way that does not leave room for doubt that Louis Tomlinson and Harry Styles were and are in a relationship, but the injustice and aversion of the industry towards queer artists and queer-friendly spaces within the professional fields affiliated with their work leads to these two artists to have remained closeted for the past 13 years and counting.

Conclusion

At the heart of this journey towards justice for queer individuals in this industry, lies the need for a collective awakening, transcending the confines of conformity and tradition. Policymakers and other leaders in this industry wield the tools of legislation and could be architects of change for the better, crafting a framework that safeguards the rights and dignity of all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Yet, true transformation requires more than mere rhetoric or legislative force, demanding a radical shift in the consciousness of the general public as well. Embracing diversity and championing inclusivity must be the pillars of our collective identity and unity. Confronting the entrenched power dynamics that continue to perpetuate the closet despite the constant progress through the years, a culture of empathy and understanding, as opposed to judgment and hate, must be cultivated, recognizing that each individual, regardless of station or circumstance, possesses an inherent worth deserving of recognition and respect. Amplify the voices of those who have been silenced. Sow the seeds of empathy and compassion. Nurture authenticity and truth. This will become a reality, as a spotlight is shone on injustice and change is demanded once passive observation turns into a fight for justice in all sectors, active participation to aid in an unfolding story of human liberation and equality.

Fanfiction terms for aces

I got tired of being intimidated of fanfiction and read several glossaries so you don't have to! Here are some terms I think may be helpful: (feel free to reblog an add more!)

From

Curtain-fic -- refers to stories in which characters who are deeply established in their relationship engage in casual domestic activities such as cooking, laundry, shopping, or the trope for which it is named, picking out curtains together. See also: Fluff

Gen -- refers to a category of stories in which there is no romance or sex. Although it may include background or implied pairings, any relationships are incidental to the story itself. May, however, contain mild to extreme violence and/or foul language, so could still have high ratings.

Pre-slash -- refers to stories in which a homosexual romantic relationship does not yet exist, but there is the potential likelihood for one to occur as there is noticeable attraction or clear feelings between same sex characters. Such stories are still technically Gen and rarely exceed a PG-13 rating, but due to the non-heteronormative insinuations are often marked just in case. Alas, there is no opposite "pre-het" version, as heterosexual inclinations are generally considered expected and unworthy of separate mention in our current culture, much to some people's (ahem!) dissatisfaction. Rating -- refers to a classifcation system in which a story is marked for suitablity by age or content. Rating levels indicate what amount of graphic language, violence, or sexual content a reader might anticipate within the story. Most fanfiction ratings still follow the USA Motion Picture Ratings established for television and movies, whereby G=General Audiences, PG=Parental Guidance, PG-13=Parental Guidance for Anyone Under 13, R=Restricted to Mature Audiences Only, and NC-17=No Children Under 17 Permitted. However there are a growing number of sites now using the non-copyrighted Fan Rated Rating System with its equivalent values, and some other sites that use their own personal systems. Schmoop -- refers to stories which contain scenes of especially loving, sappy romantic fluff such as PDAs (Public Displays of Affection). See also: Fluff

Slow Burn -- refers to stories featuring characters who gradually and naturally fall in love or lust before beginning a romantic or sexual relationship. As the emphasis is on the slow evolution of the relationship rather than a quick conflagration into sudden resolution, such stories may contain a lot of UST and pining until the smoldering passion eventually catches fire. WAFF (-iness) = Warm And Fuzzy Feelings -- refers to stories with no angst but lots of sappiness, which inspire the aforementioned warm and fuzzy feelings in the reader. See also: Fluff

Lime -- refers to the presence of light or mild sexual content, either heterosexual or homosexual in nature. Originated in and most common to anime fandoms only, but has popped up occasionally in other fandoms. Usually rated PG13, as there is no actual "on-screen" action. See also: Hentai and/or Lemon

Smarm -- refers to physical or emotional displays of affection between characters, usually of the same gender but not necessarily, that are considered completely non-sexual in nature. Often represented as the affection of family or deep friendships. (Smarm is NOT slash!) Starsky and Hutch and The Sentinel

K - Stands for "Kid-Safe". This means that the story is safe for anyone and everyone. Intended for general audience 5 years and older. Content should be free of any coarse language, violence, and adult themes.

K - Stands for "Kids plus a parent" on this site. Suitable for more mature childen, 9 years and older, with minor action violence without serious injury. May contain mild coarse language. Should not contain any adult themes.

Bed Sharing or Gen Bed Sharing, Poly Bed Sharing: term used in fanworks to indicate that two characters share the same bed to sleep and/or talk and finally confess their feelings for each other. In the Poly Bed Sharing the characters are more than two and share the same bed.

Bromance or Brotp and Womance or Sisotp:

Bromance/Brotp is a tag used to indicate a strong friendship between two male characters (even if sometimes is also used for friendship between a male and a female character) and Womance/Sisotp is a tag for friendship between two female characters.

Lime: fanfiction that presents erotic moments that aren't described in detail and that never reach the sexual act.

For everyone (or G or K): story suitable for all ages that doesn't contain strong contents, swearing or sexual acts. The author can talk of death or suffering but only in a light way.

Rating 14+ (Pg13, Pg15 or T): fanfiction for those over 14 years of age because inside the story the author talks about sexual topics or violence in a light way;

Pg13 or Pg15 are similar to 14+, 13 and 15 years old people can read the story;

T, Teen, indicates the story is suitable for teens.

Rating 16+ (Nc17): story for readers over 16 years old, sexual scenes or violence scenes are inserted in the chapters but are not described in details.

I can understand the Motion Picture Association of America.  Some parents only want their children exposed to certain thinks and the MPAA allows them to keep some control with the R and NC-17 ratings.  While I think it’s a hard and annoying battle to fight, I get it.

That’s really all the MPAA is for.  It’s not even a rating system that considers the tastes of people as a whole.  For that, people can just read up on it.  No, the MPAA is just a parental control.

An NC-17 should say “a movie with content too mature for those under 17” but most people read it as “a movie too offensive to watch.”  It’s worth reading up on an NC-17 movie, just like you would any other movie, to see if it’s something you would enjoy or not.  But people make assumptions about that rating and assume it has hardcore pornography and whatnot.

Does it?  It absolutely varies.  The MPAA, while useful, has an incredibly impractical system for rating movies.  As in, they don’t have guidelines.  A group of eight people watch the movie and use their heart to decide what to rate it.  This can result in a pretty inconsistent string of NC-17 ratings for questionable reasons.

Filmmakers who are ostensibly making an NC-17 movie, such as von Triet’s Antichrist, don’t mind much.  But many filmmakers are very livid about their NC-17 rating, and always because they don’t feel the reasons for the rating are adequate.  This rating also means less distribution since many people make assumptions that these movies should be avoided.

Astronomers will hunt through all this data for a special kind of exploding star called type Ia supernovae. Astronomers have also found evidence supporting another scenario, involving two white dwarfs that spiral toward each other until they merge. If their combined mass is high enough, they, too, may produce a type Ia supernova.

Since these explosions each peak at a similar, known intrinsic brightness, astronomers can use them to determine how far away they are by simply measuring how bright they appear. Astronomers will use Roman to study the spectrum of light from these supernovae to find out how rapidly they appear to be moving away from us due to the expansion of space.

Scientists will trace cosmic expansion over time by comparing how fast type Ia supernovae at different distances are receding. This will help us understand whether and how dark energy – the unexplained pressure thought to be speeding up the universe’s expansion – has changed throughout time. Using these and other Roman measurements should also help clear up mismatched measurements of the Hubble constant, which is the universe’s current expansion rate.

“Roman will paint a more vivid picture of our universe’s past and present, giving us new clues about its possible fate,” said Rebekah Hounsell, a research scientist at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County and Goddard, who is exploring ways to optimize Roman’s High Latitude Time-Domain Survey. “Its findings could reshape our understanding of the cosmos.”

Fleeting Cosmic Wonders

And by finding hundreds of faint, faraway quasars, Roman will also allow scientists to probe the period of reionization. During this cosmic epoch, scientists think intense ultraviolet light from quasars stripped electrons from atoms and turned them into ions. This transition ushered in “cosmic dawn,” as the universe went from being mostly opaque to transparent, allowing visible and ultraviolet light to travel freely.

“This Roman survey will provide a treasure trove of data for astronomers to comb through, enabling more open-ended cosmic exploration than is typically possible,” McEnery said. “We may serendipitously discover entirely new things we don’t yet know to look for.”

Jack J. Valenti: The Man, The Myth, The Legend.

Any communication student at the University of Houston is familiar with the name Jack J. Valenti, but who is this figure that has represented UH’s school of communication since 2008? This week we dive into the history of Valenti and how he became the one named after the school of communication here at the university. 

Jack Joseph Valenti was born on September 5, 1921 to a set of Italian immigrants. During his lifetime, he played significant roles for the United States Army Air Force, the Lyndon B. Johnson administration, and the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA). 

At the age of 16, Valenti attended night classes here at the University of Houston. As a student, Valenti became the president of the student association. Valenti was also a writer for the campus newspaper called, “The Daily Cougar.” During his time in college, Valenti was enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force as a pilot and flew 51 combats during World War II. During Valenti’s years of service he received multiple rewards such as the Distinguished Flying Cross and an Air Medal. After serving three years, Valenti graduated from UH in the spring of 1946. 

Valenti went on to study at Harvard and received an MBA from Havard, making Valenti the first UH graduate to receive an MBA. Valenti worked in advertising for Humble Oil (ExxonMobil) and gained the experience to establish an advertising firm with his partner Weldon Weekley. The firm was named, “Weekley and Valenti” and it had the Conoco Oil Company as its first client. 

Valenti also worked in political advertising and he became a news liaison for the Kennedy-Johnson administration. Following the assassination of Kennedy, Johnson stepped up to president and hired Valenti as the president of the MPAA. 

While serving as the president of the MPAA, Valenti developed the MPAA movie rating system in 1968. This is the rating that movies put in the beginning to highlight what audience age group is suitable to watch the film based on its content. 

Through all of Valenti’s success, the University of Houston honored him with an honorary doctorate in 2002. This is the highest honor that a university is able to give to its students.

In Valenti’s personal life, he married Mary Margaret Wiley in 1962. Wiley also worked for the Johnson administration. Together they had three children: John, Alexandra, and Courtenay Valenti. 

In 2007 just before his 45th wedding anniversary, Valenti passed away at the age of 85 after suffering complications from a stroke. 

Following Valenti’s death, the University of Houston decided to rename the school of communications in his honor. In 2008, the Jack J. Valenti School of Communication was officially recognized by the university. 

Valenti played many successful roles in his lifetime. From serving the country through its military and politics to establishing his own advertising firm and working with large oil companies. Valenti quotes the phrase, “There isn’t anything in the world that can’t be made better.” Valenti is an honorable figure and the University of Houston is proud to be a part of his legacy.
